Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Paul Marcus walks into Los Angeles Homicide and says he
- 0:03Speaker 1: has killed a young woman named Lorraine. Sergeant Joe Friday
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Frank Smith take his formal statement, then check it
- 0:12Speaker 1: against missing person reports, witnesses, and information from San Francisco.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The question before them is whether a crime has actually occurred.
- 0:24Speaker 1: In the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide detail, each reported
- 0:28Speaker 1: fact must be weighed against records and the people who
- 0:32Speaker 1: may confirm it. From NBC, this is Dragnet, episode 241,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Big Confession, first broadcast March 30th, 1954. Jack Webb stars
- 0:45Speaker 1: as Friday and produced the series. John Robinson wrote the script.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 1:04Speaker 2: is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Drag men.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned the homicide detail. A
- 1:22Speaker 2: young man walks into your office and tells you he
- 1:24Speaker 2: has a problem. From the way he talks, you.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Know it's serious. Your job, listen.
- 1:34Speaker 5: It was Wednesday, September 8th. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 1:36Speaker 5: We were working the day watch out of homicide detail.
- 1:39Speaker 5: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Warman. My
- 1:41Speaker 5: name's Friday. I was on my way back to the
- 1:43Speaker 5: office from R9. It was 10.14 a.m. when I got
- 1:46Speaker 5: to room 42. Homicide.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Pardon me, sir.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Are you a policeman?
- 1:51Speaker 5: Yes, sir. That's right. What can I do for you?
- 1:53Speaker 4: I want to talk to somebody. I'm not sure who, though.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Well, if you tell me what it's all about, I
- 1:57Speaker 5: might be able to help you.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Well, I got to be sure it's the right person.
- 2:00Speaker 4: You can understand that, can't you?
- 2:01Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 2:02Speaker 4: My name's Paul Marcus. All right, Mr.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Marcus, what is it you want to talk about?
- 2:06Speaker 4: Do you work in there in the homicide department?
- 2:07Speaker 5: That's right.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You know all about murders, then, huh?
- 2:11Speaker 5: You want to come into the office and talk?
- 2:12Speaker 4: No, no, I don't want to go in there.
- 2:13Speaker 6: Is there someplace else we can go? I'd like to
- 2:16Speaker 6: talk to you alone. This is kind of a personal thing.
- 2:18Speaker 4: All right, sir.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Come on down the hall, the interrogation room.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Nobody else there?
- 2:21Speaker 6: No.
- 2:22Speaker 4: That's good, because like I told you, this is a
- 2:24Speaker 4: personal matter. I need your advice. All right, sir, this way.
- 2:28Speaker 6: This is the first time I've ever been in the
- 2:29Speaker 6: police department. I feel kind of funny just walking in
- 2:32Speaker 6: and talking personal things.
- 2:33Speaker 4: To a stranger.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Yes, sir, I can understand. Go ahead. Want to sit
- 2:41Speaker 5: down right there?
- 2:42Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:44Speaker 5: All right, you want to tell me about it?
- 2:47Speaker 4: Do you mind closing the door?
- 2:48Speaker 5: All right. All right, now, what's your problem, Mr.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Marcus? I told you it was personal.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Yes, I know.
- 2:58Speaker 6: I want to be sure I handled it right. I
- 3:00Speaker 6: could get in a lot of trouble if I didn't.
- 3:01Speaker 6: I've been trying to figure out what to do about
- 3:04Speaker 6: it for a week now and couldn't find the right answer.
- 3:05Speaker 4: That's why I came here. You guys should know.
- 3:07Speaker 5: All right. Now, if you'll just tell me what's bothering you,
- 3:09Speaker 5: we might be able to do something for you.
- 3:12Speaker 4: A whole week and no... I sure hope you got
- 3:14Speaker 4: it for me.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Mr. Marcus, but if you don't tell me
- 3:17Speaker 5: what this is all about, there's nothing we can do.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Well, it's nothing big, just a personal problem. I just
- 3:21Speaker 4: want to know how to handle it.
- 3:22Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 3:23Speaker 4: I killed a woman.
- 3:31Speaker 5: We got the name of the woman Paul Marcus said
- 3:32Speaker 5: that he'd murdered. We also obtained a description of the victim,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and Frank went down the hall to missing persons to
- 3:37Speaker 5: see if a report had been filed on her.
- 3:39Speaker 6: I waited with the suspect. It's a personal problem. You
- 3:41Speaker 6: know how to handle it.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I wasn't sure. That's why I came to you.
- 3:44Speaker 5: All right, where did you meet this Lorraine Farrell?
- 3:46Speaker 4: San Francisco.
- 3:47Speaker 5: How long ago?
- 3:47Speaker 4: A couple of weeks. I just knew her a little
- 3:50Speaker 4: while before it happened. Just a couple of weeks. Fisherman's Wharf.
- 3:53Speaker 4: What's that? Fisherman's Wharf. That's where I met her in
- 3:55Speaker 4: San Francisco. I was on a vacation. Two weeks with pay,
- 3:58Speaker 4: and I went to San Francisco, Fisherman's Wharf. That's where
- 4:00Speaker 4: I met Lorraine.
- 4:00Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Well, I was down there sitting on the dock looking
- 4:04Speaker 6: at the boats, just sitting there eating prawns. You know
- 4:06Speaker 6: how they cook them in those great big pots?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Well, I was just sitting there eating prawns, and I
- 4:10Speaker 4: met her.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Well, where'd you kill her?
- 4:12Speaker 6: Look, you've got to let me tell this in my
- 4:14Speaker 6: own way, or I'm not going to tell you at all.
- 4:15Speaker 6: It's got to be right so you'll understand. Now, if
- 4:17Speaker 6: you don't get it right, the whole thing's gone wrong.
- 4:19Speaker 6: You see, it's a real personal thing.
- 4:21Speaker 5: All right, sir, go ahead.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Well, I was just sitting there eating prawns, eating them
- 4:25Speaker 6: and throwing the little tail pieces down the water.
- 4:27Speaker 4: You know how you do.
- 4:29Speaker 6: Watching them kind of float around. Kind of all of
- 4:32Speaker 6: a sudden, she was right there sitting just alongside of me.
- 4:35Speaker 5: You ever see her before?
- 4:36Speaker 4: I never laid eyes on her till then.
- 4:38Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 4:39Speaker 6: We both sat there for a minute and then we talked.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Just little things like nice weather and how long you've
- 4:44Speaker 6: been in San Francisco.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Things like that. You know how you do.
- 4:46Speaker 5: How old did you say the feral woman was?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Nineteen. Turned nineteen the fifth of August.
- 4:51Speaker 6: She was born there, you know, in San Francisco She
- 4:53Speaker 6: told me about it when we were talking How she
- 4:55Speaker 6: was born there and grew up there Yeah Told me
- 4:57Speaker 6: all about the schools she went to How she used
- 4:59Speaker 6: to play on Strawberry Island and Stow Lake You ever
- 5:01Speaker 6: been there? Yes, sir It's kind of a beautiful place,
- 5:04Speaker 6: you know They got those rowboats and you paddle around
- 5:06Speaker 6: the lake And right in the middle is this island,
- 5:08Speaker 6: Strawberry Island There's all those swans that swim around and
- 5:10Speaker 6: you can feed them Real beautiful.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Strawberry.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Tell me something, Marcus, you ever been in the hospital?
- 5:17Speaker 6: Huh?
- 5:17Speaker 5: You ever had any mental care?
- 5:18Speaker 4: Been under the.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Supervision of a psychiatrist, maybe?
- 5:21Speaker 4: You think I'm crazy, don't you?
- 5:22Speaker 5: I want to just ask you a question.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Well, I'm not. I've never been to a doctor. I'm
- 5:25Speaker 4: telling you the truth. You'll see.
- 5:26Speaker 5: All right. Do you want to go ahead?
- 5:28Speaker 6: I guess you get a lot of crackpots in here
- 5:30Speaker 6: telling you all kinds of phony stories, huh?
- 5:32Speaker 5: The doors are wide open all night.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I guess you get a lot of them. But I'm
- 5:35Speaker 4: not a crackpot. I'm telling you the truth.
- 5:36Speaker 6: I did kill her. But it's important you know why
- 5:39Speaker 6: I did it. I got to tell you the right way.
- 5:40Speaker 6: If I don't, none of it's going to be any good.
- 5:42Speaker 5: When did you kill her?
- 5:43Speaker 4: September 1st. That's the day we left. September 1st.
- 5:46Speaker 5: That'd be a week ago today, huh?
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah, September 1st. Joe? Yeah?
- 5:48Speaker 5: See you in a minute. All right. Just a minute, Marcus. Mm-hmm.
- 5:55Speaker 5: All right, what do you got? Well, I checked missing persons. Yeah?
- 5:57Speaker 4: I got a report on the girl.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Same name, description matches. When did she disappear? September 1st. Well,
- 6:02Speaker 5: that fits in with what he told us.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yeah, but there's something that doesn't.
- 6:04Speaker 5: What's that? She's 16 years old. Each year, there are
- 6:13Speaker 5: hundreds of citizens who walk into the nearest police station
- 6:15Speaker 5: and confess to some sort of crime. Some have actually happened.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Others have occurred only in the mind of the person confessing.
- 6:23Speaker 5: No matter how wild the confession, how implausible the details
- 6:26Speaker 5: of the crime, each report has to be checked out.
- 6:29Speaker 5: To doctors, cases are clinical. But to the working detectives,
- 6:33Speaker 5: they're the cause of a lot of legwork and a
- 6:35Speaker 5: great deal of checking. They cost the taxpayer untold man
- 6:39Speaker 5: hours in investigating time and many times result in nothing.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Because of his attitude and his reluctance to give us
- 6:45Speaker 5: the complete story all at once, it appeared that Paul
- 6:47Speaker 5: Marcus might be one of these people. The fact that
- 6:50Speaker 5: he named a girl who was missing meant little, since
- 6:52Speaker 5: it was possible for him to have read the story
- 6:53Speaker 5: in a newspaper. The only way we had of being
- 6:56Speaker 5: sure was to continue the interrogation. 10.34 a.m.
- 7:00Speaker 6: She told me she wanted to get away from home.
- 7:02Speaker 6: That's what she told me, how it was rough for
- 7:03Speaker 6: her there, and she wanted to get away. Mm-hmm.
- 7:05Speaker 5: That's when you said you'd bring her down here, is
- 7:07Speaker 5: that right?
- 7:07Speaker 4: Oh, no, I didn't even suggest it. The whole thing
- 7:09Speaker 4: was her idea. She brought her down?
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:11Speaker 6: You see, after that first day on Fisherman's Wharf, I
- 7:13Speaker 6: saw her several times. Almost every day, we'd meet someplace
- 7:16Speaker 6: and talk. Where would you meet her? Well, sometimes in
- 7:18Speaker 6: one of the hotel bars once we met out at
- 7:20Speaker 6: the Steinhardt Aquarium. We met on the rotunda there. You
- 7:22Speaker 6: know where they have the big pool and all the
- 7:24Speaker 6: alligators swimming around?
- 7:25Speaker 4: You know where? Well, we met there once.
- 7:28Speaker 6: And we walked over to the place where they have
- 7:29Speaker 6: the band concerts right across the way where the band plays.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Only they weren't there that day. Wasn't anybody there, just
- 7:34Speaker 6: Lorraine and me. We sat on the benches and talked.
- 7:37Speaker 6: That's when she said she wanted.
- 7:37Speaker 4: To go with me. To Los Angeles, huh?
- 7:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 4: That's where I was going. She wanted me to take her.
- 7:43Speaker 5: She came right out and asked you? Sure.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Told me how it was hard for her at home
- 7:46Speaker 6: and she wanted to get away. She told me she
- 7:48Speaker 6: had friends here. Said she could stay with them until
- 7:50Speaker 6: she got things straightened out. You know, get a job
- 7:52Speaker 6: in a place of her own. Well, she was going
- 7:54Speaker 6: to do that. Get a place of her own and
- 7:55Speaker 6: a job.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Then she'd be all right.
- 7:58Speaker 5: You ever meet her parents?
- 7:59Speaker 6: No, I never went to the house. She told me
- 8:00Speaker 6: where it was, though. Someplace out by the Twin Peaks Tunnel.
- 8:03Speaker 6: I didn't know where exactly. She didn't want me to
- 8:05Speaker 6: go out there. Said it would only cause her more trouble.
- 8:07Speaker 6: That's why I'd meet her in town.
- 8:09Speaker 5: You ever meet any of her friends up in San Francisco?
- 8:12Speaker 6: Yeah, just once we were in a drugstore on Market
- 8:14Speaker 6: Street having a sandwich. We were just sitting there, and
- 8:15Speaker 6: she was telling me how it was bad for her
- 8:17Speaker 6: at home, and a girl came in.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Looked like she was a schoolgirl. You know how I mean, young?
- 8:21Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 8:22Speaker 6: She came in and talked to Lorraine, then they went
- 8:23Speaker 6: over to the phone.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Booths and talked.
- 8:25Speaker 5: You didn't actually meet the girl?
- 8:27Speaker 6: No. No, Lorraine said if I did, the girl might
- 8:29Speaker 6: say something to Lorraine's parents, and that.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Would cause trouble.
- 8:31Speaker 5: You know this girl's name?
- 8:33Speaker 4: I think it was Grace. I'm not sure, but I
- 8:35Speaker 4: think it was Grace.
- 8:37Speaker 5: When did you leave San Francisco?
- 8:38Speaker 6: Wednesday morning, September 1st. I wanted to get back in
- 8:41Speaker 6: time to get some rest before I had to go
- 8:42Speaker 6: to work. You know, my vacation was up and I
- 8:44Speaker 6: had to go back to work. Where'd you pick up
- 8:46Speaker 6: the girl? Wasn't a pickup. I was sitting on Fisherman's
- 8:49Speaker 6: Wharf eating prawns and looking at the boats and we
- 8:51Speaker 6: started to talk.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Wasn't a pickup. We just got friendly.
- 8:55Speaker 5: No, Marcus. He means where'd you pick up the girl
- 8:57Speaker 5: when you left for Los Angeles?
- 8:59Speaker 4: Oh, I thought you met when I met her the
- 9:00Speaker 4: first time.
- 9:01Speaker 6: That's what I thought. I met her out at the tunnel.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Where's that?
- 9:05Speaker 6: Well, you know where Castro Street runs in the market,
- 9:07Speaker 6: where the L car comes in from the beach? That's
- 9:08Speaker 6: where I met her. She came from home, had her
- 9:10Speaker 6: suitcase and all, and she came out on the L car.
- 9:13Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Well, she got off the streetcar, got into my car,
- 9:16Speaker 4: and we left for Los Angeles.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Where'd you kill her?
- 9:19Speaker 4: I told you before, if I don't tell it my way,
- 9:21Speaker 4: it isn't going to work. You're not going to understand.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It's got to be my way.
- 9:24Speaker 5: All right, go ahead, Mark.
- 9:26Speaker 6: Well, it was a beautiful day, just the kind of
- 9:28Speaker 6: a day you want when you're going on a drive.
- 9:30Speaker 4: You know how I mean, clear and the sun shining?
- 9:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Well, that's what kind of a day it was. Uh-huh.
- 9:35Speaker 6: You could see all across the bay over to Berkeley
- 9:37Speaker 6: and way up north.
- 9:37Speaker 4: It was real clear. You want to go ahead with
- 9:40Speaker 4: your story? Mr.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Friday?
- 9:42Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. My way?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Yes, all right. Go ahead.
- 9:46Speaker 4: All right.
- 9:49Speaker 6: We drove all day, stopped for lunch at a place
- 9:51Speaker 6: near San Luis Obispo, a little lunch stand there.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Had a French dip sandwich. It was one of the
- 9:55Speaker 4: best I ever had.
- 9:56Speaker 6: The meat was real lean, and they didn't sop up
- 9:58Speaker 6: the bun with the gravy. Just the right amount. One
- 10:00Speaker 6: of the best I ever ate. Lorraine liked them, too.
- 10:02Speaker 6: She didn't like the bread all sopped up with gravy.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Go ahead. What happened after you had lunch?
- 10:08Speaker 6: We left there and drove on. We got down to
- 10:10Speaker 6: around Malibu. I guess it was really before that where
- 10:13Speaker 6: the divided highway is, up the coast.
- 10:15Speaker 4: You know where the cliffs are? Yeah, we know.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Well, we stopped. She was such a beautiful night. I
- 10:19Speaker 6: just wanted to sit there and look at the ocean.
- 10:22Speaker 6: People don't take time anymore.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And what happened then?
- 10:24Speaker 4: We just sat there, had a cigarette and talked. That's
- 10:28Speaker 4: when I told her. First time I ever said it.
- 10:30Speaker 5: What was that?
- 10:31Speaker 4: It's funny.
- 10:32Speaker 6: I guess most fellas say it a lot. You know
- 10:34Speaker 6: how I mean to a bunch of girls and never
- 10:35Speaker 6: mean it?
- 10:36Speaker 4: Go ahead. I told her.
- 10:38Speaker 6: First time I said I loved her. And I told
- 10:40Speaker 6: her that she didn't have to get a job. That
- 10:41Speaker 6: I wanted to marry her and get her a house
- 10:43Speaker 6: and all. And she wouldn't have no more trouble at home.
- 10:45Speaker 6: How she'd have her own home and.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Everything would be all right. I told her all that.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Yeah And that's when I knew, right then You could
- 10:51Speaker 6: divide the second in a million parts And in one
- 10:53Speaker 6: of them One of the parts, I knew I had
- 10:55Speaker 6: to do it Kill her? Yeah You see, she didn't
- 10:59Speaker 6: tell me the real reason She lied to me, I
- 11:01Speaker 6: knew I had to do it So she wouldn't lie
- 11:03Speaker 6: to anyone else You can understand that You can see.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Why I had to do it Well, maybe you better
- 11:08Speaker 4: tell us Well, it was.
- 11:09Speaker 6: All a lie All about the family being mean to
- 11:11Speaker 6: her All that was a lie She just wanted to
- 11:13Speaker 6: get to Los Angeles Because she wanted to meet some
- 11:15Speaker 6: other fella here That's why She lied about the family,
- 11:18Speaker 6: and that's why she did it.
- 11:19Speaker 4: So you see, I had to kill her. I had to.
- 11:22Speaker 5: How'd you kill her?
- 11:23Speaker 4: Huh?
- 11:24Speaker 5: I say, how did you kill her?
- 11:26Speaker 6: We got out of the car and walked over to
- 11:27Speaker 6: the cliffs. We could see right down to the ocean.
- 11:30Speaker 4: We just stood there. I just hit her. She fell down.
- 11:33Speaker 4: It was quiet. So I pushed her over into the water. Mm-hmm.
- 11:38Speaker 5: What'd you do then, Marcus?
- 11:40Speaker 4: I got in the car and drove home.
- 11:42Speaker 5: You just left her there, huh?
- 11:43Speaker 4: Certainly. There wasn't anything I could do for her.
- 11:46Speaker 5: You point out the place where all this happened? Well, sure.
- 11:49Speaker 6: It's up the coast where the highway's divided, north of Malibu.
- 11:52Speaker 4: It's real easy to find. Anybody else around? You mean
- 11:54Speaker 4: when I hit her?
- 11:55Speaker 5: That's right.
- 11:56Speaker 4: No, we were all alone. I didn't see anybody, just
- 11:58Speaker 4: the two of us.
- 12:00Speaker 5: All right, Marcus, you willing to give us a statement
- 12:02Speaker 5: on all this?
- 12:03Speaker 4: You mean what I just told you?
- 12:04Speaker 5: Well, sure.
- 12:05Speaker 4: You want me to tell all about it again?
- 12:07Speaker 5: We'll call in a stenographer.
- 12:08Speaker 4: So you can write it down, huh?
- 12:09Speaker 5: That's the idea.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Well, sure, I'll tell her.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Tell me something, Marcus. When did you get out of
- 12:15Speaker 5: the hospital?
- 12:17Speaker 4: I told you before, I was never in one. You
- 12:19Speaker 4: guys sure make it tough, don't you?
- 12:21Speaker 5: What's that?
- 12:21Speaker 6: I came in here because I wanted to tell you
- 12:23Speaker 6: about Lorraine. I wanted you to know so you wouldn't
- 12:25Speaker 6: think it was my fault, that's all. So you wouldn't
- 12:27Speaker 6: think it was my fault, and now you don't believe me.
- 12:29Speaker 6: You think I'm just another crackpot trying to sell a
- 12:31Speaker 6: phony story. You guys sure make it tough.
- 12:34Speaker 5: We gotta be sure.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Well, I'm telling you the truth. I want you to
- 12:37Speaker 4: believe me.
- 12:38Speaker 6: I want you to believe me.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Man, we're beginning to. A statement was taken from the
- 12:48Speaker 5: suspect and he was booked in at the main jail
- 12:50Speaker 5: on a charge of suspicion of violation of Section 187 PC, murder.
- 12:54Speaker 5: We sent a teletype to San Francisco and we contacted
- 12:57Speaker 5: Inspectors Ed Van Der Voort and John O'Hare of Homicide Detail.
- 13:00Speaker 5: We filled them in and asked that they check out
- 13:02Speaker 5: the suspect's story on their end. We also asked that
- 13:05Speaker 5: they send us all available information on the missing girl
- 13:08Speaker 5: and that they check with her family and try to
- 13:09Speaker 5: get a list of any known associates that she might
- 13:11Speaker 5: have had in the Los Angeles area. Frank and I
- 13:14Speaker 5: checked out of the office at 7.48 p.m. and we
- 13:16Speaker 5: went home for the night. The following morning at 9.23 a.m.,
- 13:20Speaker 5: Inspector Vandervoort from San Francisco called back.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Yeah. When was that, Ed? Wait a minute. All right, yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 5: I got it. How about friends down here? I said,
- 13:33Speaker 5: how about friends down here? Mm-hmm. Well, it should be
- 13:38Speaker 5: here this afternoon, then.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll check them out. No, no, that's on the way.
- 13:45Speaker 5: We put it in the mail for you last... Well,
- 13:48Speaker 5: you should have it by now, then. Okay, right. Right, Ed,
- 13:52Speaker 5: thanks very much. We'll be checking with you.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Bye. How about it? Well, they checked the family and
- 14:00Speaker 5: the friends, the place where Marcus said he stayed up there.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Marcus' story checks out all the way. Yeah. In the
- 14:12Speaker 5: phone conversation, we learned that all of Lorraine Farrell's friends
- 14:15Speaker 5: and relatives had been interviewed and their stories checked with
- 14:17Speaker 5: the one given us by the suspect, Marcus. The girl
- 14:20Speaker 5: and Paul Marcus had been seen together in the Bay City.
- 14:24Speaker 5: The desk clerk at the hotel where the suspect had
- 14:26Speaker 5: stayed verified the date that he'd checked out. It was
- 14:28Speaker 5: the same day Lorraine Farrell disappeared. The officers in San
- 14:32Speaker 5: Francisco were able to contact the girl the suspect had
- 14:34Speaker 5: referred to as Grace. She recalled seeing a man answering
- 14:37Speaker 5: Marcus' description with a missing Farrell girl. Frank and I
- 14:41Speaker 5: spent the rest of the day checking on the suspect.
- 14:43Speaker 4: We talked to the people he worked with.
- 14:45Speaker 5: They described Marcus as being moody and withdrawn. We talked
- 14:48Speaker 5: with his landlady. Her description of the suspect's attitude was
- 14:51Speaker 5: the same that we'd gotten before. We thoroughly searched Marcus' apartment,
- 14:56Speaker 5: and in a desk drawer we found a loose-leaf notebook
- 14:58Speaker 5: with several pages of penciled notes describing the trip that
- 15:01Speaker 5: he'd taken up to San Francisco. On one of the pages,
- 15:05Speaker 5: at the back of the book, we found a lengthy
- 15:07Speaker 5: letter to a Lorraine, in which Marcus apologized to the
- 15:10Speaker 5: girl for killing her, but he went on to explain
- 15:12Speaker 5: that he had no choice. We booked this evidence. The
- 15:16Speaker 5: following morning, Friday, September 10th, Frank and I drove down
- 15:19Speaker 5: to the beach and we talked to the people in
- 15:20Speaker 5: the vicinity where the suspect said the murder had occurred.
- 15:23Speaker 5: We found an elderly couple who lived in a trailer
- 15:25Speaker 5: on the beach. They recalled having seen two people answering
- 15:28Speaker 5: the description of the suspect and the missing girl on
- 15:31Speaker 5: the night that the murder occurred. We drove back to
- 15:33Speaker 5: the main jail and we signed out, Marcus. We took
- 15:36Speaker 5: him down to the car and we drove him out
- 15:37Speaker 5: to the beach. We turned up the highway and told
- 15:39Speaker 5: him to let us know when we came to the
- 15:40Speaker 5: place where he killed the feral girl.
- 15:42Speaker 6: You sure you know where the place is, Marcus? Yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 6: I remember. It's just up the road a little bit.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Just keep right on going.
- 15:47Speaker 6: You'll find it. You'll see it now. There's kind of
- 15:53Speaker 6: a parking place and a couple of trees. Eucalyptus, I think.
- 15:56Speaker 6: There's two of them on the side of the parking place.
- 15:57Speaker 4: You can't miss them.
- 15:58Speaker 6: It's right ahead there on the left.
- 16:00Speaker 4: There, you see? Yeah.
- 16:01Speaker 5: I'm going to pull in, Frank. Okay.
- 16:07Speaker 6: Just look at all those cars. Everybody's in such a hurry,
- 16:09Speaker 6: they never see anything. Just like they had blinders on.
- 16:12Speaker 6: You sure this is the place? I told you, didn't I?
- 16:14Speaker 6: No reason to say a thing like that. If it
- 16:16Speaker 6: wasn't true, just pull right in there. That's it, right
- 16:19Speaker 6: over there. Right here is where I parked when it happened.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Maybe over there a little bit more, but.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Oh, right about here.
- 16:27Speaker 5: And the two of you just sat here for a
- 16:29Speaker 5: few minutes, is that it?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 6: We just sat here and had a cigarette, and then
- 16:32Speaker 6: we got out of the car and walked over to
- 16:33Speaker 6: the edge of the cliff.
- 16:35Speaker 5: All right, come on.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Show us.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Sure. So you'll believe me, I'll show you. Now, we
- 16:45Speaker 6: stood right over there.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Right there, and I told her I was in love
- 16:48Speaker 4: with her and wanted to marry her.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Now, you stay here. Just point out where you were.
- 16:52Speaker 4: You think I might try to jump off, don't you?
- 16:55Speaker 4: That's what you think, isn't it?
- 16:56Speaker 5: You just show us, huh?
- 16:57Speaker 6: I wouldn't do that. There's no reason to. I don't
- 16:59Speaker 6: know why you wouldn't agree that I had to do it.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I didn't have any other way to do it.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Where were you when you hit her? Right there, near
- 17:06Speaker 4: that clump of grass.
- 17:07Speaker 6: We stood there and looked down at the ocean, and
- 17:09Speaker 6: she told me about this other guy.
- 17:11Speaker 4: That's when I hit her. She fell down right about, well,
- 17:13Speaker 4: right about there. Uh-huh. And where'd you push her off
- 17:16Speaker 4: the cliff? There, right where I hit her. She was
- 17:19Speaker 4: just lying there.
- 17:20Speaker 6: I guess she hit her head on something, and she
- 17:21Speaker 6: was real quiet.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I just rolled her over the edge.
- 17:24Speaker 5: It was right there.
- 17:25Speaker 4: There, you see where the rocks are kind of worn?
- 17:27Speaker 5: Go and take a look. Yeah. No, you wait here.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Gee, if I'd have known it was going to be
- 17:33Speaker 6: this hard to get it straightened out, I don't think
- 17:35Speaker 6: I'd have started the thing. When am I going to
- 17:36Speaker 6: get out of jail?
- 17:37Speaker 5: That isn't up to us.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Well, then I want to talk to the people who
- 17:40Speaker 6: it's up to. I got to tell them about Lorraine,
- 17:42Speaker 6: how she lied to me and why I had to
- 17:43Speaker 6: kill her. As soon as they hear the story, they'll understand.
- 17:46Speaker 6: They got to realize that there wasn't any other way.
- 17:49Speaker 5: How's it look? Well, I found this caught in a
- 17:51Speaker 5: branch just over the edge.
- 17:52Speaker 4: No.
- 17:52Speaker 5: It's a girl's handkerchief. Read the name on it. No. Friday,
- 18:02Speaker 5: September 10th, 3.46 p.m. We contacted the crime lab and
- 18:05Speaker 5: asked them to come out and go over the scene.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Officers stood by so that any physical evidence would not
- 18:10Speaker 5: be disturbed until Lieutenant Lee Jones and his men had
- 18:12Speaker 5: an opportunity to go over it. Frank and I, along
- 18:15Speaker 5: with the suspect, drove back to town where we made
- 18:16Speaker 5: arrangements with the city lifeguard service to search for the body.
- 18:20Speaker 5: The following morning, a boat equipped with diving gear left
- 18:22Speaker 5: Santa Monica Harbor and took a course north. Experienced deep-sea
- 18:26Speaker 5: divers searched the crevices in the rocks beneath the cliffs.
- 18:30Speaker 5: All of the sea bordering the vicinity was gone over.
- 18:33Speaker 5: There was no trace of a body. The shoreline on
- 18:35Speaker 5: either side of the murder spot was checked. Still no
- 18:38Speaker 5: trace of the missing girl. In the meantime, two additional
- 18:41Speaker 5: teams of men were assigned to check out the friends
- 18:43Speaker 5: of Lorraine Farrell. They carried pictures of Paul Marcus and
- 18:46Speaker 5: attempted to dig out any information on the suspect and
- 18:49Speaker 5: the missing girl. 6.42 p.m., Sunday. We called the main
- 18:54Speaker 5: jail and asked that the suspect be brought to the
- 18:56Speaker 5: city hall for additional questioning.
- 18:57Speaker 6: I had a reason to do what I did, a
- 18:59Speaker 6: good reason. Now, you let me talk to the responsible
- 19:01Speaker 6: people around here, and I'll have them tell you. I'm
- 19:03Speaker 6: getting a little tired of being shoved around. You just
- 19:05Speaker 6: bring in the boss and let me talk to him.
- 19:09Speaker 5: What day did you say that you left San Francisco?
- 19:11Speaker 4: September 1st.
- 19:12Speaker 5: I thought it was the 2nd. The 1st. You said
- 19:15Speaker 5: you left in the afternoon. Is that right?
- 19:16Speaker 6: In the morning, and you'll remember it. I don't know
- 19:18Speaker 6: what all these questions are for. I told you I
- 19:20Speaker 6: killed Lorraine. I walked in here and told you there's
- 19:22Speaker 6: no reason for all this, McGillis.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Just no reason.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Where'd you hide the body?
- 19:26Speaker 4: I didn't hide it.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Well, and where is it?
- 19:29Speaker 6: I told you, I put her in the ocean.
- 19:30Speaker 5: We haven't been able to find her.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Well, then you're not looking good. I told you the
- 19:33Speaker 6: truth all along the line. I've told you the truth.
- 19:34Speaker 5: You sure you didn't make a mistake about where all
- 19:36Speaker 5: this happened?
- 19:36Speaker 6: Not a chance in the world. Right there by the
- 19:38Speaker 6: parking place where the two trees are.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Well, maybe you just thought you left her there.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I know it. Had you been drinking when you killed her?
- 19:44Speaker 1: No.
- 19:44Speaker 6: We stopped and had a couple of beers on the way.
- 19:46Speaker 6: Just a couple, not enough to get drunk.
- 19:48Speaker 5: But you did have something to drink. Well, sure.
- 19:50Speaker 6: But not enough to get drunk on.
- 19:51Speaker 5: How many beers you have?
- 19:53Speaker 6: Two, maybe three.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Why, which was it? Two or three.
- 19:56Speaker 6: Well, what difference does it make?
- 19:57Speaker 5: Were you drunk?
- 19:57Speaker 4: No.
- 19:58Speaker 5: How about the girl? Was she drunk?
- 19:59Speaker 4: No.
- 19:59Speaker 5: You sure about that?
- 20:00Speaker 6: Yes, yes, I'm sure. What are you trying to do?
- 20:03Speaker 6: What difference does it make? Maybe we did have more
- 20:05Speaker 6: than a couple, but what difference does it make?
- 20:06Speaker 5: Just trying to get things straight. We want to be
- 20:08Speaker 5: sure we got the right story.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Well, you have.
- 20:10Speaker 5: All right. How about a cigarette?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks. Frank?
- 20:17Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks. Here, I got a match.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Hey, wait a minute.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Don't light his, too. That's bad.
- 20:26Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 20:27Speaker 6: Three on a match. It's bad.
- 20:29Speaker 5: It is, huh?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Well, sure. You never do that.
- 20:33Speaker 5: Here. Here.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Thanks. You got right home after you killed the Farrell girl, huh?
- 20:38Speaker 4: Yeah. I drove right down the highway and went home.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Traffic was kind of heavy.
- 20:43Speaker 5: I thought about it.
- 20:44Speaker 4: All those people all hurrying around, not taking any time.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Anybody see you when you came home?
- 20:48Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 20:49Speaker 5: Well, anybody see you park the car, go into your apartment?
- 20:51Speaker 4: Well, no. There wasn't anybody around.
- 20:53Speaker 5: You said when you met the girl up in San
- 20:55Speaker 5: Francisco that she had a suitcase with her.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Is that right? Yeah, she did. Artificial leather with real
- 21:00Speaker 4: leather binding.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Where is it now?
- 21:01Speaker 4: Huh? What did you do with her suitcase?
- 21:03Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Well, I don't know. I don't remember it.
- 21:05Speaker 5: We couldn't find it in your room.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Well, you didn't have no right to go through my room.
- 21:08Speaker 4: No right at all. We didn't find a suitcase.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Where is it?
- 21:11Speaker 4: Well, I don't know.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Did you put it with a body?
- 21:12Speaker 6: Well, I might have.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Where?
- 21:14Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't remember. I hit her. She
- 21:16Speaker 6: lied to me and I hit her. And I pushed
- 21:17Speaker 6: her into the ocean. That's all I know. And that's
- 21:19Speaker 6: all I'm going to tell you.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Joe, see you in a minute.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Yeah, sure. What do you got, Al?
- 21:30Speaker 4: We found the girl.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Where?
- 21:32Speaker 4: She's sitting in the squad room.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Frank stayed with the suspect in the interrogation room and
- 21:42Speaker 5: I went with Sergeant Al to leave us up to
- 21:43Speaker 5: the office. Sitting at one of the tables was a
- 21:47Speaker 5: small girl with jet black hair. As we came into
- 21:50Speaker 5: the room, she was putting on lipstick. She glanced over
- 21:53Speaker 5: at us and then she went back to what she
- 21:54Speaker 5: was doing. There wasn't any doubt about it. The girl
- 21:58Speaker 5: in the squad room was Lorraine Farrell. She dyed her
- 22:01Speaker 5: hair and she had on a lot of makeup. but
- 22:03Speaker 5: it was the missing girl. Joe, this is Miss Farrell,
- 22:06Speaker 5: Joe Friday. How do you do?
- 22:08Speaker 1: Hi.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Where'd you find her, Al?
- 22:09Speaker 4: Friend up in Eagle Rock. Says she's been there for
- 22:11Speaker 4: a week.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Thanks, Al.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:15Speaker 5: You seen the papers lately, Miss Farrell?
- 22:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I read the frontings.
- 22:19Speaker 5: You ought to read the front page. You've been on them.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Am I right?
- 22:22Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. We've got a lot of policemen out looking for you.
- 22:25Speaker 5: They probably needed the exercise anyway. There's a man down
- 22:28Speaker 5: the hall who thinks that he killed you. That creep, Paul? Yeah,
- 22:32Speaker 5: Paul Marcus. That's his name.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Real creep.
- 22:34Speaker 6: I was glad to get away from him. Oh, gosh,
- 22:37Speaker 6: he tried to give me a bite on home. What
- 22:39Speaker 6: a baloney.
- 22:39Speaker 4: He's a real creep.
- 22:41Speaker 6: You ought to keep an eye on him. He's going
- 22:42Speaker 6: to wake one of these days.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Is that so?
- 22:44Speaker 5: Yeah. He drove me down here, and when I told
- 22:46Speaker 5: him I didn't want to have anything.
- 22:47Speaker 6: To do with him, he got real sore, started yelling. Creep.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Where'd all this happen, miss?
- 22:53Speaker 4: Oh, out by Malibu.
- 22:54Speaker 6: Road out there.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Stopped the car and gave me all the stuff about
- 22:57Speaker 4: wanting to marry me.
- 22:58Speaker 6: I was in love with me.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Big deal.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Said I was the first girl he ever said that to.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Big deal. What happened then?
- 23:04Speaker 6: I told him I didn't want no part of him.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Told him to get lost. Thanked him for the ride
- 23:08Speaker 6: and told him to get lost. He flipped. Bad, he flipped.
- 23:11Speaker 6: I took off, got a ride, came into town. I
- 23:14Speaker 6: got this girlfriend, Eagle Rock.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I've been out there.
- 23:16Speaker 6: You ought to watch that guy, though.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. How old did you tell him that you were?
- 23:20Speaker 1: I don't know. Forget.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I think 19, something like that.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I forget.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 23:24Speaker 6: He confessed to killing me, huh?
- 23:26Speaker 5: That's right.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Look at that piece of wig.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Let's take a walk, huh? Where? Come on.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Sure.
- 23:31Speaker 6: I've got nothing to lose. Can you guys drive me
- 23:34Speaker 6: back to Eagle Rock tonight?
- 23:35Speaker 4: I've got a date. I've got to be back pretty quick.
- 23:37Speaker 5: You're not going to go back to Eagle Rock.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Who says so?
- 23:40Speaker 5: We're going to have to hold you. For what?
- 23:42Speaker 6: I haven't done anything.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Well, you're a minor. We've got a missing report filed
- 23:45Speaker 5: on you. Your folks are pretty worried.
- 23:47Speaker 4: They're always worrying about something.
- 23:48Speaker 6: If there ain't nothing for them to worry about, then they.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Worry about that.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Well, it doesn't make any difference. We're going to have
- 23:52Speaker 5: to hold you.
- 23:53Speaker 4: You just try it, cop.
- 23:55Speaker 6: You just try it. You'll find out you got more
- 23:56Speaker 6: trouble than you came in one lump.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Uh-huh. In here. This is Lorraine Farrell, Officer Smith.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Hello.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Lorraine.
- 24:09Speaker 6: Hi, creep.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I didn't mean to do it. You know that.
- 24:12Speaker 6: I didn't really mean to do it, but there wasn't
- 24:14Speaker 6: any other way. What's the plan? You know what he's
- 24:16Speaker 6: talking about?
- 24:17Speaker 5: He thinks he killed you.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Wait.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I didn't think I'd ever see you again. I didn't
- 24:21Speaker 4: think I would. But I want you to know one thing, Lorraine.
- 24:24Speaker 5: What's that?
- 24:25Speaker 4: I forgive you for lying.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I told you it hadn't. Yeah, come on.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Where to?
- 24:30Speaker 5: We'll take you to the office and call a policewoman.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Then to the can, huh?
- 24:34Speaker 5: The juvenile hall. Come on, let's go. I'll take her, Joe.
- 24:36Speaker 5: All right.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Bye, Paul.
- 24:38Speaker 6: Bye, Lorraine.
- 24:39Speaker 4: I'm not mad at you anymore.
- 24:40Speaker 6: You know, I was worried.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Sergeant?
- 24:49Speaker 4: Yeah? I want you to know how I appreciate it.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Yeah, what's that?
- 24:53Speaker 4: What you tried to do. I think it was real fine, thanks.
- 24:55Speaker 5: I don't know what you mean.
- 24:57Speaker 4: You didn't fool me a bit.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Huh?
- 24:59Speaker 4: I know I killed her.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Paul Nelson Marcus was held to answer a charge of
