- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And I've really, really been enjoying this product.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And you know, me being somebody who does not like this category of usually formulations.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's a huge game changer for me.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: So I think a lot of you will love it if you haven't tried it already.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founder of Bonjour, Natasha Bonjour.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Natasha.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to host you.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I'm also very excited to be here today.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, I'm very excited to speak to you and to learn from you because I love your product.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I really love it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's it's lovely.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: For everyone listening, uh, Natasha and I were talking before the show.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And with with French beauty, I'm always so intrigued with the way that it's applied.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So, Natasha, I think you've just you've done such a beautiful job with your brand, and I really love it.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And so I want to I want to start with you and your background, and just if you could tell us a little bit about where you began with the beauty industry.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yes, so as you can hear, I'm French, I'm a pharmacist, so I'm a French pharmacist, which is a little bit different than the pharmacists you have here, because we are really trained in health, but also in cosmetic science.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so I have a farm degree in the science behind a radiant skin.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So I went even uh further in my in my degree to really understand what is a radiant skin and to talk more about the inner power of your skin.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And so I've lived in New York for the past 13 years, but I grew up in the south of France, and I spent a decade working in the beauty industry, mainly in skincare formulation, in research and development, and also a little bit in the color cosmetic.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: That's very interesting.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So you've seen a lot of different angles in the industry, that's very cool.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Exactly, definitely.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And but my patient has really started 15 years ago with this thesis on uh the science behind the radiant skin.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And so since then I worked on hundreds of cosmetic formulations and I screened many active ingredients to really find the best combination possible to illuminate any uh skin's complexion.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and because you know it makes sense because I I love your product for so many reasons.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I think it's one thing to create a bomb, but it's another thing to create something that can be used in such a versatile way.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And when I say that, it's we you had mentioned makeup industry, right?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Like the makeup sector.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And with makeup, as we age, we keep having issues because there's so much that you need to think about.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, I never used to use primer, right?
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I never used it in my 20s and my you know, late or my early 30s.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I never used it, but now I'm thinking why?
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Because you have fine lines, you have things going on, you wouldn't want your makeup to seep into that.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And you know, when I use the Bonjour the Balm, I love it as a primer, like especially around you know, yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: We had so many makeup artists who love the product as well, even if for me it's not a makeup, it's 100% uh an active uh skincare.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: But I love the way that people use it as a primer.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Some people even use it for their cuticles, which surprise me, but it works so well.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So I I really had this desire to create a skincare staple, something that really simplifies beauty routine and suits every single skin, even the most sensitive.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And I think this is very front, you know, to very streamline your beauty routine, have this approach of the less is more.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And as a pharmacist, for me, the efficacy was at the heart of the formula, and it and it took me so many years to create this formula just to formulate it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Um, and so it's it's not easy.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: It was not easy to find a name for this this formula.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: We call it Le Bone because it looks like a bone, but it's not the heavy feeling that you have, it's very silky, it's very easy to apply on any kind of skin, and it suits even the acne prone skin or the very dry skin.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: So that has been a huge challenge for me as a formulator to get something that can be universal and that can be used for under eyes, which is a very sensitive part of any skin.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: So it has been very difficult, and uh, I'm so happy we we got it uh live now.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And it's it's right now it's available in the US and in Canada, not yet in in France, and I hope in Europe.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is the answer to anybody who has any like cruppiness under the eyes, any dryness, any kind of fine lines around the lips, around.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, there are so many uses to this formula and to this bomb because you know, Natasha, for me, when I felt it, because I I really do not like bomb products, like I personally as good as a consumer, I don't like them, you know, because they're sticky and they feel weird and they're like almost like they're clogging, even something like a Vaseline texture.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I hate it because it's like, no, no, no, you know, I feel like I'm clogging my pores.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And so when I felt the formula of you, the the the bomb, I when I felt the formula, it felt like a serum that was condensed down or something, you know, like it doesn't go on as thick or like sticky or thick or anything.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: It goes on, it glides on velvety smooth, you know what I mean?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Like very nice, like it's almost like blurring uh wherever you're applying it, but it's very nourishing.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So, what took like how long did it take you for this formula to like really come up with like the final rendition of this?
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, so first it took me a long time to find the lab, was able to formulate exactly what I wanted.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: I'm very perfectionist too.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So I worked with 12, I think 13 labs, 13 different labs around the world.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Because what was very hard is usually when you go to see a lab, you have to give them a benchmark, you have to give them an idea about the texture you want.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And I had nothing on the market.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: So I had to explain and I have to, you know, explain with words what I was looking for and with the level of actives I wanted.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: They told me it's impossible to get all this active in an early phase and to not clog your poles and to get the right balance to have it for any kind of skin.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So it took me a long, long time, and it's made in France.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: So everything is made in France, but the RD um who helped me to tweak it is Japanese, and I feel you know they are so in advance on skincare, they really understood what I wanted.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: So we went through 125 iterations.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: So they've been so patient with me.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: You can't imagine the first version I got was so far from this texture, and so it was not stable, and so the level of active I wanted was not possible.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: So it has been a very, very long way, and so it took me five years in total.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's just yeah, it's I mean, it shows though, you know, the formula is brilliant, it's beautiful, and I'm just so glad that you made it with so much, you know, such a meticulous way.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And I think your your background helps with that.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: I think um, you know, with this when people have a scientific background, I think it's in the nature, you know, of the person to be a little bit of a perfectionist.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: So I understand.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I, you know, but um I want to learn a little bit more about um if you could talk to us a little bit about French beauty, because I think, you know, in the industry we have so many representations of beauty.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I know there are a lot of brands coming from different, you know, cultures and people's routines.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And so what when you think about French beauty, like what is truly French skincare?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: You know, if you could help us understand that.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Like, what did you grow up seeing and you know, everything anything?
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: So for me, French beauty is very minimal, but yet effective, it has to be very efficient.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: We are, you know, when you go to a French pharmacy, when you open the door, you you see all these pharmaceutical brands that have been clinically tested, that are good for sensitive skins.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: So each of my products is going to be the same.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: It's always clinically tested.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So it has to show the efficiency with studies and with research.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Also, what I love about French Beauty, it's all based on skincare with a touch of makeup.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: We never cover uh with high coverage foundation.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: It's all about the minimal in makeup just to enhance your own skin, but we really focus on skincare.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Um, French Beauty is also very holistic.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: It's a very holistic approach.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Uh still when you see French pharmacy, you have supplements, you have uh skincare, you have everything in one.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: It's really take care of everything in one, like very holistic.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: I think the one product, like five in one as a product, like that kind of thing.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Exactly, yes, multi-purpose formula for sure.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And the pleasure also is very part of our routine.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: There is no, you know, no pain, no gain.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I would say no way.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to hurt at all.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: And we you need to be patient and to really let you on skin.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: We really believe in the the power of the skin, and so we we believe in skincare first.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I love that, and I love when you said that because I really don't.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, I love the aesthetic community, you know, that we have that it's brilliant science, and there's a lot of really a lot of technology, but there's something to be said about using a product, letting it work, you know, and trying it for a year, you know.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Even people now are saying use it for 30 days, you know, use it for your skin can renew in 21 days, so you can't go faster than that.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: So you have to wait at least 21 days.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: When I see claim in 24 hours, I'm afraid that you might damage your skin barrier or something because it can be fast.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: You have you really have to be patient.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: So if we think about hydration, if we think about instant glow, that's okay if it's instantly, but if you think about wrinkles, if you think about something that means that's coming from the inside that you need to fix inside, it has to, it takes time for sure.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And also, um, I've been very focused on the native cells.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you've heard about them, but they are the um the most healing parts of a plant, and they are so efficient when you think about extracts.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Extracts are just like portion of uh of an active, and when you think about native cells, it's a whole part.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So you get everything from the cells, and you have all actives that the cell can produce.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So in the first formula, in the bone, you have the prickly pair and you have also the hibiscus.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And what I love also about these native cells is that they mimic the structure of your skin because the the cell's membrane is a bilipidic membrane, like your skin, and it's really help formula to go deeper into the skin.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And so for me, it was very important to get biocompatible formula, very concentrated, so there is no water on the bone.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: When you think about serums, they contain at least 70% of distilled water.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: So I decided to have something very, very concentrated.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: So I had to gain all this space and to get you know 70% more actives than a regular serum.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's amazing.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: But that's so it makes sense.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: It makes a lot of sense.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I think that, you know, and you know, one thing I really, really love, and this translates when I look at the bomb, like I see that because it is a concentrated formula, it's not huge with packaging, so you're not wasting plastic or anything like that.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: You're not, you know, it's like sustainability is built into the more we follow science, I feel like, with our formulas, sustainability comes with that.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: To produce them, it's by biotechnology, and so it's multiply in the lab.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: So you get just a portion of the plant, you do not kill it, and you multiply in lab.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: When you think about extracts, you have to kill plants.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: If you want more actives, you you get more plants to get killed.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So it was very important for for me also in the way I source my active that it doesn't impact sustainability and really to protect the nature.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: In south of France, so on the Riviera.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: So I can't imagine to you know remove all the hibiscus and the such a rich area.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a very rich area.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: South of France is so rich in nutrients and stuff, and the plant life is so beautiful.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So that's that's lovely.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yes.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So I want to ask you then, you know, from because you have from the scientific side, from the pharmacist approach, right?
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Um what is your take on skincare?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, you see all the products, right?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: We all do on social media, and everyone's making something right now.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Like from a pharmacy perspective, I mean, what do you think about that in terms of like interactions and stuff?
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Because I worry about that, honestly, Natasha.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of these brands, I mean, there's like 50 products, you know, in some of these brands.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious, as a pharmacist, what do you think about that?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: On my side, I would conceive my formula, like I would conceive a medicine.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: So for me, it really begins with efficacy, choosing only the active ingredients that function in the skin in the most efficient way.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And when I see, you know, like everybody's watching TikTok and uh like Instagram, you have so many videos, and you you are kind of lost because there are so many trends.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: One day we tell you to do something, slugging, the day after, it's a different technique.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: And so your skin is not a bag, you know, you don't change every single day.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: It's not a trend.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So for me, I just focus on what I learned and what I saw via you know clinical in vivo, in vitro test, and so I just uh rely on on my background and just to think about the texture, think about of the skin and how it can go deeper into the skin, what the skin needs.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: So I really try to you know speak the language of your skin with my formula.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: It's it's really linked to my background, and um I try to not listen to the trends and to just be focused on uh the results.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: That makes a lot of sense.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, result-oriented with uh with science.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: I think result-oriented is the way to go.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: That makes sense, and I think uh I'm very similar to you in that way.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: I think I do look at everything.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: But thinking about you know the trends of uh uh having so many products, and the issue is there are bad interactions between if you take one serum from one brand, uh uh daily cream for from another brand, they are active that doesn't work together, and the consumer does not know it.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think it's important to either keep the same brand or just simplify your skincare routine because nobody knows that vitamin C and niacinamide should never be together.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Same thing with vitamin C and retinol, for example, you should never mix any cream which contains these two actives.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: So there are interactions like that that should not be together because it might be irritating for your skin or it might not work at all.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: I want to ask in France do they layer products?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Like, is it it's not normal to do that?
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, usually it's like like one serum, so one cleansing.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So they really believe in the power of cleansing.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Usually you have a double cleansing by night, and you have one or two or three products maximum, or like four products, it has to be very fast, very efficient.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: That's you know, that's very interesting to me, yeah, for my culture, because French women have the best skin, literally.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: They have um you guys have amazing skin.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I've always noticed that, and it's something that we're always I think as an industry, also, we're always talking about French beauty, you know, we're always talking about what are French women doing that we are not doing, you know, in the West.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: So it's like uh I I find that to be very interesting that there is not many products, you know, in the routine, and that makes sense because then you're able to stick to the products for a long time.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: So I think that's another thing, is um that I noticed, you know, in the US, when I talk to, for example, brands, there's a lot of disconnect between formulation side and then what a brand person, like what a brand knows, you know, and I find that to be a little disheartening.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not gonna lie, you know, there's some times where I look at it and I think, you know, did they just go and let any chemist make this because some of the ingredients that are mixed together or there's not enough claims around it, or there's not enough research.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Like that's always on my mind.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And especially when it comes to manufacturing also, some of these rules are not being applied to manufacturing level, you know.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: So we don't know what's being sourced.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: We don't know if, you know, if you're saying that, for example, there's some random brand that's claiming your niacinamide, or where did you get your niacinamide?
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: You know, there's no way to track this stuff.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: And that's why I also get confused as a consumer because I'm like, why aren't we talking about this more?
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Why isn't there transparency?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And I actually that's why I like your brand because I feel like there's nothing but transparency here.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, it's the the product works, it you know what's in it, you know what I mean?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Like it's really clear.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: So and it's funny that you talk about manufacturing, but for example, I always go on site.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: So in two two weeks, I would be in France because we're gonna do another batch of Le Bonne.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: We are almost sold out of the first one, and so I want to be there, I want to check every single step.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I want to see if everybody and it and you know it's France, so it's very high level of quality.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I want to follow every single step.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: It's my baby, and I want to be sure everything is perfect and it's filled perfectly, and it's good to know where each of the ingredients are coming from, where there are sources.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: So I spoke with uh the active suppliers so many times.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: I do so many calls with them.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm so involved in the process of formulation of Le Bon.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So I I want to control everything.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad that you do.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: I'm glad that you're involved.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's really refreshing to hear that from a founder because I I think you know, that's where we turn to as consumers for answers, you know, as founders.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And so, and I think right now what's interesting to me about Bonjour is that it is falling into many categories.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: So if you're somebody out there who's looking for this is vegan, right?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, so yeah, so uh exactly.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: So if you're vegan, you can you can use the brand.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: If you're you know into natural beauty, clean beauty, green beauty, it doesn't matter, you know, it's all checking off all the boxes, and that's an amazing thing.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's true.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Like dermatologists tested, it's hypoallergenic, it's good for acneprined skin, it's good for very sensitive skin.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: So I try to test every single thing, and especially because it's a very unusual texture, so I want people to be confident that they can use it, that it has been tested, it's ultra clean, and so to not be afraid to apply it, just apply it and try it.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And so we we we're gonna start also a sampling program where people can order samples before buying, and I can't wait to have that because so far we are only sold online, so I can't wait for people to try it before buying it.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I was also gonna suggest, you know, because I love the size of the the product that I have.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: It's perfect because it's like bigger than a mini, you know what I mean?
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: And it's it's not big enough to where you're going to be cluttering your bag.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say you can even make smaller ones because little teenagers are shopping now, you know what I mean?
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And then they can put it in their little bag or their backpack or whatever, and it's a really, really cool product.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to see what you guys do in the future.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Very yes, I can't wait to show you more.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And so it's also refillable, so which is great.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, it's really refillable.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't know, yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: You can't really guess, but it is, and and the outside is aluminum, it's not plastic, so we try to reduce the consumption of plastic at the maximum, and the refill is 100% recyclable.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Wow, I love the brand.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: So, Natasha, I want to thank you so much.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: This has been so fun, and I really love Bonjour.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: If you have not tried the Libom and you guys are curious for another product, you're looking for something that is usable every day, it's something you can carry with you.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, literally, you can take the product anywhere.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: And I use it as a lip balm, as an eye cream, as a facial serum.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: I I literally use it for like, you know, my cuticles.
