Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Former Prince Andrew arrested following scrutiny over Epstein relationship
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A stunning development in Great Britain, former Prince Andrew arrested
- 0:05Speaker 1: arrested in connection with his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. It
- 0:09Speaker 1: follows weeks of new revelations about their friendship following the
- 0:13Speaker 1: US Justice Department's release of millions of files from the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Epstein case. NBC's Raft Sanchez is in London. Force Raft,
- 0:21Speaker 1: good morning to you. First of all, what have you
- 0:23Speaker 1: been able to learn so far?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Craig, Good morning. This is a fast moving situation. But
- 0:28Speaker 2: here's what we know so far. British police took former
- 0:31Speaker 2: Prince Andrew into custody early this morning local time in Norfolk,
- 0:36Speaker 2: that is in the east of England. It's where he's
- 0:38Speaker 2: been living since he was forced out of his royal
- 0:41Speaker 2: home in Windsor earlier this month. Now police are not
- 0:46Speaker 2: officially naming him. They are saying at this point that
- 0:50Speaker 2: they have taken a man in his sixties into custody
- 0:54Speaker 2: and the allegation Craig is misconduct in public office. This
- 0:58Speaker 2: is effectively an alligation of corruption. Now this is important
- 1:02Speaker 2: because Andrew, of course has faced repeated allegations that he
- 1:07Speaker 2: sexually abused some of Epstein's trafficking victims. British Police are
- 1:11Speaker 2: saying that at this point they are looking into allegations
- 1:15Speaker 2: he misused his public office. Now they are not giving
- 1:19Speaker 2: further details at this point, but what we do know
- 1:22Speaker 2: is in that massive release of Department of Justice emails
- 1:26Speaker 2: from the convicted sex offenders accounts, there were emails from
- 1:31Speaker 2: Prince Andrew, who was a prince back then, back in
- 1:34Speaker 2: two thousand and ten, to Jeffrey Epstein. He was serving
- 1:38Speaker 2: at that point as a trade envoy for the British government.
- 1:42Speaker 2: He had access to sensitive trade information and he sent
- 1:46Speaker 2: some of that trade data to Epstein. Again, this is
- 1:50Speaker 2: back in twenty ten. This is after Epstein was convicted
- 1:55Speaker 2: in Florida in two thousand and eight, when the Prince
- 1:59Speaker 2: was sending him these emails. Now, this is a serious
- 2:03Speaker 2: offense if he is charged. It's worth saying at this
- 2:06Speaker 2: point he has been arrested, he has not been charged.
- 2:09Speaker 2: This is an offense that can carry prison time and
- 2:12Speaker 2: it underscores Craig just the stunning fall from grace. We
- 2:17Speaker 2: have been discussing with Royal historians here in London this
- 2:20Speaker 2: morning trying to find any precedent for this. No one
- 2:24Speaker 2: can think of a situation in the modern era where
- 2:28Speaker 2: the king's younger sibling has been arrested on suspicion of
- 2:33Speaker 2: public corruption and is potentially facing charges. In terms of
- 2:38Speaker 2: what would happen next year, first steps would be some
- 2:41Speaker 2: kind of decision about bail and then it would be
- 2:44Speaker 2: in the hands of prosecutors for whether to formally bring charges.
- 2:48Speaker 1: All right, Rev. Since just forced there in London, refs standby,
- 2:52Speaker 1: let us bring an NBC's chief international correspondent, Kiir Simmons,
- 2:55Speaker 1: who has covered the royal family for decades, and again
- 2:59Speaker 1: a former Prince Andrew A, you've be noted here arrested
- 3:02Speaker 1: on his sixty sixth birthday. Good morning to you. Tell
- 3:06Speaker 1: us a little bit more about what you've been able
- 3:08Speaker 1: to glean from the situation so far.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Well, as Raff said, a fall from grace and to
- 3:15Speaker 3: be arrested on your sixty sixth birthday, on your birthday
- 3:18Speaker 3: in the early hours of the morning, well that is
- 3:20Speaker 3: quite something. I mean, Craig, Look, this is a royal
- 3:24Speaker 3: scandal alongside scandals that we've seen through the decades. But
- 3:30Speaker 3: the royal family have been trying to distance themselves. We've
- 3:34Speaker 3: seen that in the fact that we now call him
- 3:37Speaker 3: Andrew Mountbatten Windsor not Prince Andrew. His title was taken away,
- 3:42Speaker 3: his heirs and graces, if you like, were taken away.
- 3:45Speaker 3: We've seen that in the messaging from King Charles, who
- 3:49Speaker 3: frankly has had for a long time a fairly distant
- 3:53Speaker 3: relationship with his brother, but also even with Prince William.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You'll remember, Craig. Just in the past few weeks, on
- 4:00Speaker 3: a trip to Saudi Arabia, Prince William and the Princess
- 4:04Speaker 3: of Wales Catherine, put out a statement about the Epstein scandal,
- 4:09Speaker 3: talking about their feelings for the victims of that scandal.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And clearly it was heartfelt and it was a personal message,
- 4:17Speaker 3: but I think it was also part of this process
- 4:20Speaker 3: of moving Andrew away from the royal family. One of
- 4:24Speaker 3: the questions, of course, Craig is going to be whether
- 4:27Speaker 3: that's really possible, because, for example, the royal watchers are
- 4:32Speaker 3: talking now about the question of whether there are emails
- 4:36Speaker 3: that Andrew Manbattan Windsor Will have used, would have sent
- 4:40Speaker 3: while he was a trade envoy, while he was a
- 4:43Speaker 3: working member of the royal family. Does Buckingham Palace have
- 4:47Speaker 3: records of those emails? Will they expected will it be expected,
- 4:51Speaker 3: Will bucking In Palace be expected to hand over that
- 4:54Speaker 3: kind of evidence. So the possibility that the Royal family
- 4:58Speaker 3: get pulled into this is very real, despite their efforts
- 5:03Speaker 3: to kind of protect the brand.
- 5:04Speaker 1: If you like, our chief international correspondent Kiir Simmons care
- 5:08Speaker 1: thank you. We should note we've received a statement as
- 5:11Speaker 1: well from the family of Virginia Roberts Jewfrey. That statement reads,
- 5:16Speaker 1: in part, today our hearts are broken. Our broken hearts
- 5:20Speaker 1: have been lifted at the news that no one is
- 5:22Speaker 1: above the law, and not even royalty. On behalf of
- 5:24Speaker 1: our sister, Virginia Roberts jew Frey, weekstend our gratitude to
- 5:28Speaker 1: the police for the investigation and arrest of Andrew mount
- 5:31Speaker 1: Batton Windsor again that coming from the family of Virginia
- 5:36Speaker 1: Roberts Geffrey of course, Virginia Roberts jew Frey, one of
- 5:39Speaker 1: the most prominent accusers in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, who
- 5:43Speaker 1: died by suicide last year. Kere, thank you, Raf, thank you,
- 5:47Speaker 1: We
- 5:47Speaker 2: Thank you for watching and remember stay updated on breaking
- 5:50Speaker 2: news and top stories on the NBC News app, or
