- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Welcome back to.
- 0:26Speaker 1: The Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 792.1 FM, proud part of
- 0:29Speaker 1: Utah's ESPN radio network. Welcome in Jeff Schwartz, NFL and
- 0:36Speaker 1: college football insider, friend of the program.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hey, Jeff. How are we doing?
- 0:41Speaker 4: I haven't checked Twitter. Did Sean Payton tweet last night
- 0:45Speaker 4: about the game yet?
- 0:47Speaker 3: No, there was no. I didn't see anything.
- 0:49Speaker 4: I was curious. He was very big into Twitter like
- 0:52Speaker 4: three weeks ago, so I was curious if he's back
- 0:54Speaker 4: on the app.
- 0:54Speaker 5: He just wanted to respond to you criticizing Bo Nix,
- 0:57Speaker 5: who played great last night.
- 0:58Speaker 3: It was incredible.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, so I guess he didn't come back to, like, say,
- 1:03Speaker 4: I told you so or something? No.
- 1:06Speaker 3: No, didn't go for that.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I was curious. I've been on Twitter all day. I
- 1:11Speaker 4: didn't see that.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So is the Chiefs still the Chiefs?
- 1:17Speaker 4: That was pretty impressive last night, right? Yeah. Considering they
- 1:21Speaker 4: lost their best defensive back at the first drive interception
- 1:25Speaker 4: and Delane gets hurt, you know, re-injures his shoulder or scapula,
- 1:30Speaker 4: whatever body part it ended up being. Man, what an
- 1:33Speaker 4: impressive performance against Kansas City last night. You know, a
- 1:35Speaker 4: lot of people doubted Andy Reid's ability to adjust, right?
- 1:38Speaker 4: They said there's no way that this old dog is
- 1:40Speaker 4: going to learn new tricks, and the new trick was
- 1:41Speaker 4: Kenneth Walker. They used him like they should, right? They
- 1:43Speaker 4: went in and said, look, we pay all this money
- 1:45Speaker 4: for this guy. We have a quarterback coming off an injury.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Let's use our offensive line. Let's use our resource, and let's,
- 1:51Speaker 4: you know, let Kenneth Walker do a majority of the
- 1:54Speaker 4: work for our offense. They will obviously sprinkle in some
- 1:56Speaker 4: Mahomes magic whenever we can. And I thought it was
- 1:59Speaker 4: great to performance defensively. Man was the rush to pass her. Well,
- 2:02Speaker 4: they blitzed. Well, they covered. Well, it was about as
- 2:05Speaker 4: good as you could probably get in week one for
- 2:08Speaker 4: a team with some, with some question marks.
- 2:12Speaker 5: So when we think about this, this NFL season and
- 2:18Speaker 5: a tiny little sample size, a week one sample size.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Has anyone who was not kind of in the Super
- 2:26Speaker 5: Bowl conversation or in the, oh, this team has high
- 2:29Speaker 5: expectations this year. Did they play above expectation for you?
- 2:32Speaker 5: And on the flip side of that, is there anyone
- 2:35Speaker 5: besides the Rams that really underperformed?
- 2:38Speaker 4: It might actually be in the same game. The Cowboys
- 2:40Speaker 4: defense was atrocious again, right? We were told it was fixed.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I thought it was fixed. All the guys on defense
- 2:46Speaker 4: they brought in, same old Cowboys defense. I think on
- 2:48Speaker 4: the Giants offense, I think the Giants looked really, really good.
- 2:51Speaker 4: They were very physical up front, which was good to see.
- 2:53Speaker 4: They haven't had a physical offense like that in quite
- 2:55Speaker 4: a few years. I thought the offensive game plan was really,
- 2:58Speaker 4: really good. Matt Necke, their OC, has not been a
- 3:02Speaker 4: good OC outside of Andy Reid, but I thought that
- 3:06Speaker 4: Greg Roman, who's also on the staff there, was a
- 3:08Speaker 4: really good influence to this game plan with the fullback
- 3:11Speaker 4: runs and just being very physical. I thought Jackson Dart
- 3:14Speaker 4: played well. So it might be the same game. I
- 3:18Speaker 4: thought the Cowboys would be good this year. I bought
- 3:20Speaker 4: the Kool-Aid, and after week one, man, just not great OC,
- 3:26Speaker 4: not good.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Who impressed you so far? I mean, like I said,
- 3:32Speaker 5: we're only a week in, but who impressed you most?
- 3:35Speaker 4: I mean, the team in the NFL scored 49 points.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I think they impressed me. I mean, the.
- 3:43Speaker 4: That the Bears scored 59 points NFL game. That's like
- 3:47Speaker 4: that's super impressive. Like that's like feels impossible to do
- 3:50Speaker 4: in the NFL. And it was with ease. They didn't
- 3:53Speaker 4: feel hard for them. And and I do that. So impressive.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Right.
- 3:57Speaker 4: The Bears have talked about being the best offense in
- 3:59Speaker 4: the NFL. And they showed a week one just a super,
- 4:03Speaker 4: super impressive performance by them.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I'm still asking NFL questions because I want to dance
- 4:11Speaker 5: around what we're eventually going to get to in college football.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Why? You know my answer already?
- 4:16Speaker 3: No. No. We're going to save it.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:19Speaker 3: We're going to save it.
- 4:21Speaker 5: The conversation that everyone had with the Rams and the
- 4:26Speaker 5: travel and the body clock and all that kind of stuff,
- 4:32Speaker 5: I don't like it because it takes away credit from
- 4:34Speaker 5: the San Francisco 49ers.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Maybe they're just.
- 4:36Speaker 5: On that given day, maybe they're just a better team,
- 4:39Speaker 5: at least a good enough team to beat the presumptive
- 4:41Speaker 5: Super Bowl favorites. But a big part of that conversation
- 4:47Speaker 5: before the game and then especially after the game was
- 4:50Speaker 5: that travel schedule. You think that that is the last
- 4:52Speaker 5: time a team will try to do it that way?
- 4:55Speaker 4: So where's the furthest you've traveled for PFL?
- 5:00Speaker 5: I mean, it would be the Middle East. It would
- 5:02Speaker 5: be probably Dubai, I think, is the farthest I've gone.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Direct flight?
- 5:06Speaker 3: No, there's no direct flight from Salt Lake City to Dubai.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Delta, one of the heaviest, just shows up and takes
- 5:13Speaker 4: everyone to Dubai from Salt Lake City.
- 5:16Speaker 5: We're lucky because we're a Delta hub. You can fly
- 5:20Speaker 5: direct to Europe. You can fly direct to South Korea now.
- 5:24Speaker 5: There's a Japan flight, if I'm not mistaken, from the
- 5:27Speaker 5: Salt Lake International Airport. Here to Amsterdam, that's a long flight.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Here to London, that's a long flight, but Yeah. The
- 5:37Speaker 5: longest flight I've ever been on ever was Abu Dhabi
- 5:41Speaker 5: to Chicago, which is like 17 hours.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That's a long flight, which.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Is your point. One of those in those suites.
- 5:47Speaker 3: This was, this was, uh, this was the early days.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I was, how was that?
- 5:51Speaker 3: I was in the back, the back, the back, the
- 5:54Speaker 3: back in those days. Um, now I'm lucky.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Now I can, I can at least make the European
- 5:59Speaker 5: flights and, and Jeff Schwartz class, but not.
- 6:02Speaker 3: In those days.
- 6:03Speaker 4: No. Yeah. First class for life. Um, That's Norman and
- 6:07Speaker 4: Olivia about that. They know that life. So, look, the
- 6:12Speaker 4: Rams have said they did this to be better prepared
- 6:16Speaker 4: when they come back, right? That was the purpose of this.
- 6:19Speaker 4: So let's see how they play when they come back, right?
- 6:22Speaker 4: They play Monday night against the Giants. That was the
- 6:24Speaker 4: purpose of this was, okay, well, we're doing this because
- 6:27Speaker 4: this gets us the most ready to play the rest
- 6:29Speaker 4: of the season. Well, the Niners, the way they did it,
- 6:33Speaker 4: shouldn't be as prepared to play in week two and
- 6:35Speaker 4: maybe week three, just mentally body clock and all that stuff.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Like that's where they did it. So let's see, let's
- 6:41Speaker 4: see you play better against the giants. I think, I
- 6:44Speaker 4: think they outsmart themselves, Sean. I think they did. Uh,
- 6:47Speaker 4: I think that they thought they would be clever and
- 6:50Speaker 4: this would work out. And I think they looked lethargic
- 6:53Speaker 4: and I was looked fresh. They looked more prepared. They
- 6:55Speaker 4: looked more ready. Uh, do you think that they outsmart themselves? Yes. Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 4: I think so too.
- 7:01Speaker 5: And I, I also, I know that, you know, if
- 7:04Speaker 5: you're a team competing for what you think is like
- 7:06Speaker 5: a Super Bowl ready year, you don't want to have
- 7:09Speaker 5: to do the extra credit and the league is asking
- 7:12Speaker 5: you to, right? I do think that there is something
- 7:15Speaker 5: to the fact that the Niners decided to enjoy this,
- 7:18Speaker 5: embrace the experience, go experience Australia a little bit, do
- 7:22Speaker 5: some of the like fan development outreach that is really
- 7:27Speaker 5: the point behind these games and I think that there's
- 7:29Speaker 5: something to that, you know, and you need time to
- 7:32Speaker 5: do that. And of course the, the side effect, the
- 7:35Speaker 5: pleasant side effect there is that you get more time
- 7:38Speaker 5: in country and your body can adjust. And yet now
- 7:41Speaker 5: maybe the Niners feel like crap this week and the
- 7:44Speaker 5: Rams feel better this week, but who knows?
- 7:46Speaker 3: That was a divisional game.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Yeah. I just think that, you know, there's, there's this idea.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I think that like the Rams threw it away on purpose.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I don't think so. Um, I mean, they thought they
- 7:56Speaker 4: were doing the right thing, but they tried to outsmart themselves.
- 7:59Speaker 4: The Niners played great. It was a masterful college hand-in-hand
- 8:02Speaker 4: game plan. I thought he was called a great game.
- 8:06Speaker 4: They were very prepared. They were ready to play. I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 4: it just was a really good job by him.
- 8:12Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Moving on to the college football world. We'll get to
- 8:16Speaker 5: the Oregon Ducks here in just a second.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Why?
- 8:18Speaker 5: Because I want to. Because it was the biggest upset
- 8:22Speaker 5: of the season so far.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Only because michigan got an extra second on the clock
- 8:29Speaker 5: otherwise they would carry that distinction uh.
- 8:31Speaker 3: but then of course they turn.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Around against oklahoma and even though ranking shouldn't exist before
- 8:37Speaker 5: probably week four or five michigan falls out of the
- 8:41Speaker 5: rankings oklahoma was what eleven and and they go and
- 8:45Speaker 5: they they they beat oklahoma after looking terrible in week
- 8:49Speaker 5: one they look a lot better underwood settles in nicely
- 8:52Speaker 5: the defense performed incredibly well uh... and Michigan gets a
- 8:57Speaker 5: big victory over a ranked Oklahoma team. And I kind
- 9:00Speaker 5: of like silences, at least for now, some of the
- 9:03Speaker 5: doubt and flips the script a little bit on that
- 9:06Speaker 5: disastrous narrative that week one set up.
- 9:08Speaker 3: What were your thoughts on the Michigan Oklahoma game?
- 9:11Speaker 4: I thought it was like classic, like Kyle Whittingham game, right?
- 9:15Speaker 4: Underdog back against the wall, just out physical or opponents, right?
- 9:18Speaker 4: And make their life heck, like just make it really tough.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And look, I said this, I think last week too,
- 9:24Speaker 4: you're never your finished product in week one, right? So,
- 9:27Speaker 4: you know, to expect Michigan to never get better and
- 9:30Speaker 4: not improve from week one, I thought was really silly.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And look, Bryce Underwood's not a perfect quarterback. There's a
- 9:35Speaker 4: lot of things he's got to get better at. But
- 9:38Speaker 4: they leaned into his, really, 18 rush attempts, I think.
- 9:40Speaker 4: They leaned into him as a rusher, which I think
- 9:42Speaker 4: they had to do in this game. And I think
- 9:45Speaker 4: you have to be pretty impressed with the resolve to
- 9:48Speaker 4: come back from that, right? And again, they won the
- 9:50Speaker 4: game against Western Michigan. But still, the talk and just
- 9:53Speaker 4: the entire week and whatnot and the Underwood comments and
- 9:58Speaker 4: I know Coach, I don't know what I was saying.
- 10:01Speaker 4: I didn't mean to say that. Yes, you did. The
- 10:04Speaker 4: whole song and dance there, but it was impressive, Sean.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I was pretty impressed by it.
- 10:09Speaker 5: How impressed were you by Texas' comeback victory?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Shocking. If you had told me you know, that basically
- 10:21Speaker 4: Ohio State was up 20 or, you know, or Texas
- 10:25Speaker 4: was down 10 the fourth quarter. I thought there's no
- 10:28Speaker 4: way Texas would, would outplay Ohio State in that situation.
- 10:31Speaker 4: None whatsoever. I trusted Ohio State way more than I
- 10:34Speaker 4: trusted Texas. And Texas proved something right. Good for Sark,
- 10:38Speaker 4: good for Arch. You know, the way things work, I
- 10:41Speaker 4: would still probably take Ohio State next time they play,
- 10:45Speaker 4: but I, I was super impressed. I didn't think Texas
- 10:48Speaker 4: had this in them to come back. I mean, Ohio
- 10:50Speaker 4: State was pretty much dominating this game. It was trenches.
- 10:54Speaker 4: They were doing a great job. And then all of
- 10:56Speaker 4: a sudden, they weren't. And Texas made enough plays at
- 10:58Speaker 4: the end to win the game. It was very impressive, dude.
- 11:01Speaker 4: I was quite surprised.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Speaking of Texas, the Holly Rose, Steve Sarkeesian, nothing burger
- 11:13Speaker 5: has turned into a something burger now. And, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 5: Arch is being dragged because he laughed at a joke
- 11:19Speaker 5: he shouldn't have laughed at and an A.I. video that
- 11:22Speaker 5: he shouldn't have laughed at. And I don't I don't
- 11:25Speaker 5: even know where to sit on this because, like, you know,
- 11:29Speaker 5: the guy is he's a Manning. So everything he does
- 11:32Speaker 5: is going to be looked at through a microscope. And
- 11:34Speaker 5: he's at Texas. So that's going to make it even worse.
- 11:36Speaker 5: And it was already something that people were talking about
- 11:39Speaker 5: because Sark cold shouldered Holly Rowe and.
- 11:43Speaker 3: And now, you know, it's.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Like a potential distraction and it's going to be used
- 11:46Speaker 5: for a narrative one way or another. And I don't,
- 11:49Speaker 5: I don't really know how to feel about that because,
- 11:53Speaker 5: you know, he's a dumb college kid.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Yeah. Can you just have no opinion on it?
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you can.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Like I, I just, yeah, he should have, he should
- 12:04Speaker 4: have probably been excited to watch a man hit a woman.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Like we, we agree on that. Like, well, I think
- 12:08Speaker 4: we're all understanding of that. Like, yeah, probably not great that,
- 12:11Speaker 4: He liked the video of a man hitting a woman.
- 12:13Speaker 4: He probably didn't think that deeply about it, honestly. Like, probably,
- 12:17Speaker 4: Sean didn't cross his mind that it was a bad
- 12:19Speaker 4: look to like the video. And, you know, I just,
- 12:23Speaker 4: I don't have time for all these controversies that are
- 12:25Speaker 4: sort of made up. I just, I don't really. I don't,
- 12:30Speaker 4: I wish I did. Like, this is not, yeah, again,
- 12:32Speaker 4: I'm anti-hitting women. I think we all are, right? Like,
- 12:36Speaker 4: that shouldn't be something we laugh at. But I don't
- 12:38Speaker 4: think he thought of it that way. I don't think
- 12:40Speaker 4: he thought of it as, like, is I like this video,
- 12:43Speaker 4: you know, that means I'm condoning this or I'm for that.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Not everything has to be that deep. And, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 4: have you seen this trend now where, you know, Sydney
- 12:53Speaker 4: Sweeney did that ad for Novig, right? I think it was.
- 12:55Speaker 4: And now there's like this whole thing where women are like,
- 12:58Speaker 4: this is what a real woman in sports is. Like
- 13:00Speaker 4: when Sydney Sweeney is doing an ad for gambling, what
- 13:03Speaker 4: are we talking about? This is a thing? Like we're
- 13:06Speaker 4: going to be upset that she talked about like, sports
- 13:09Speaker 4: and a gambling ad? I don't get these made-up controversies
- 13:14Speaker 4: that we make in society now. I don't get it, man. Yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Holly Road just, by the way, posted a thing. She
- 13:22Speaker 5: talked to Arch. They had a conversation.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I'm sure that Arch regrets laughing at that. I'm sure
- 13:29Speaker 4: he doesn't think that it's actually funny to laugh at that.
- 13:33Speaker 4: He's in a press conference. I don't know, man. I just...
- 13:40Speaker 4: Do I have to care about it?
- 13:41Speaker 3: You don't. You don't.
- 13:42Speaker 4: You don't.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 13:44Speaker 5: I asked you to grab some time and watch Utah's
- 13:47Speaker 5: offense from this last weekend against Arkansas, even if it
- 13:51Speaker 5: wasn't like your top priority. Kevin McGibbon is doing some
- 13:56Speaker 5: unorthodox things. He's got some crazy plays in the playbook.
- 13:59Speaker 5: He's using a two quarterback system. They're running a speed
- 14:03Speaker 5: option together. with one man as the handoff, one man
- 14:07Speaker 5: as the pitch man. I mean, it's fantastic playground stuff.
- 14:13Speaker 5: What do you think of it? Do you like it?
- 14:15Speaker 5: Is it something that they can use once you get
- 14:17Speaker 5: into conference play? Arkansas was probably worse than Idaho, so
- 14:23Speaker 5: we were surprised in that regard. But how sustainable is
- 14:26Speaker 5: this level of creativity in the offense?
- 14:29Speaker 4: I'm going to make you guess my answer, if you
- 14:30Speaker 4: know my answer. It's fun for now. It's not. a
- 14:35Speaker 4: serious offense for the regular season. Like for a big
- 14:38Speaker 4: 12 champion type team, that's just not going to happen.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Look at what wins, man. Like passing the ball in
- 14:48Speaker 4: third down, right? Now, if you're not in third down,
- 14:50Speaker 4: that certainly helps. But the gadget stuff, the better teams
- 14:54Speaker 4: eat it up, man. They do. It's very fun. It
- 14:56Speaker 4: works against Arkansas and Idaho. It's going to work against
- 14:59Speaker 4: the lower teams. of the big 12 teams, but you
- 15:01Speaker 4: want to be Texas tech, which actually looked pretty vulnerable
- 15:04Speaker 4: against Oregon state. I will say, um, you want to
- 15:06Speaker 4: be Houston BYU. It a couple of times a game, maybe,
- 15:13Speaker 4: but those teams are gonna have it sussed out, man.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Cause here's the thing. There's only so many plays you
- 15:18Speaker 4: can run from those formations. It just is. You just,
- 15:22Speaker 4: you just, there's just, you can't do a ton of
- 15:24Speaker 4: stuff from those. And so defenses are going to start
- 15:28Speaker 4: seeing the film. They're going to start understanding what the
- 15:31Speaker 4: plan is here, and they're very fun. Look, I love
- 15:33Speaker 4: watching them. Option to a pass, to a run, to
- 15:36Speaker 4: this and that. It's great, but it's just not sustainable
- 15:39Speaker 4: for a season. So I'm curious to see if there's
- 15:42Speaker 4: a pivot at some point to more traditional offense.
- 15:48Speaker 5: The offensive line has continued to be a topic of conversation.
- 15:51Speaker 5: They've performed well in a two-game sample size now. I
- 15:56Speaker 5: was a lot more curious about Arkansas film on that
- 15:58Speaker 5: front because Arkansas has got one, maybe two guys that
- 16:02Speaker 5: are potentially Sunday guys on their defensive front.
- 16:04Speaker 3: I don't know if Idaho's got anyone. Those guys were limited.
- 16:07Speaker 3: They didn't do anything.
- 16:08Speaker 5: They didn't make any plays against the University of Utah
- 16:11Speaker 5: this past weekend. To me, that's success for an offensive
- 16:15Speaker 5: line when you're when you're stymieing that level of talent
- 16:18Speaker 5: opposite you, and.
- 16:18Speaker 3: When you're getting some push and you're getting, you.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Know, the, when they're actually trying to run out of
- 16:22Speaker 5: an orthodox sort of system, they're still getting really good push. Again,
- 16:27Speaker 5: there will be tougher tests along the road, but Jordan gross,
- 16:31Speaker 5: your former teammate is in my opinion, he's done an
- 16:34Speaker 5: awesome job developing this group with all new starters and
- 16:38Speaker 5: not even just all, it's not even five new starters.
- 16:40Speaker 5: They're really using like seven starters right now. And they
- 16:43Speaker 5: all seem to be playing.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Okay. It's great. It's a great start for Jordan. I
- 16:48Speaker 4: say this quite often, and I think it's really the
- 16:50Speaker 4: case here that my kids are home, sorry, that, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 4: you're supposed to check the box, right, in these games.
- 16:58Speaker 4: And so if you want to be the team that
- 17:00Speaker 4: you think you can be offensively, your offensive line has
- 17:02Speaker 4: got to be good, right? And so you should play
- 17:03Speaker 4: well against opponents that are not as good as you.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And so I think so far you've just sort of,
- 17:08Speaker 4: you love the start so far, right? You have a
- 17:10Speaker 4: brand new Division I offensive line coach who was a
- 17:13Speaker 4: very successful pro. And you see the improvements from week
- 17:16Speaker 4: one to week two. And then, you know, you'll get
- 17:18Speaker 4: tested when you go to Iowa State in a couple
- 17:20Speaker 4: of weeks and see what they're like. You know, they
- 17:22Speaker 4: just gave Iowa a run for their money last week.
- 17:24Speaker 4: And so every sort of opportunity. Now, that's going to
- 17:27Speaker 4: be the biggest test. So Oregon played Boise State, right?
- 17:31Speaker 4: They go on the road to Oklahoma State. And Oregon
- 17:33Speaker 4: started essentially three new starters on the offensive line and
- 17:36Speaker 4: two tackles making their first ever road start. One was
- 17:41Speaker 4: on start two in his career. One was on start three.
- 17:43Speaker 4: And they struggled predictably on the road a little bit, right,
- 17:45Speaker 4: getting off on the snap and sustaining blocks. And so that,
- 17:48Speaker 4: I think, is the question for you guys. When you
- 17:50Speaker 4: go on the road for the first time, how does
- 17:52Speaker 4: that environment, how does that game play out with guys
- 17:55Speaker 4: making their first road starts? So it's a very good start, Sean.
- 17:59Speaker 4: You should be very, very encouraged. And there's just going
- 18:03Speaker 4: to be more obstacles for them along the way, and
- 18:05Speaker 4: they have to just master them and learn along the way.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Who is the Oregon equivalent of Utah State?
- 18:13Speaker 3: For Utah.
- 18:15Speaker 4: I don't know what that means.
- 18:16Speaker 5: So, like, BYU is your rival. BYU is on your
- 18:20Speaker 5: same footing. Oregon had Oregon State.
- 18:25Speaker 3: They're not. Oregon State is now in the same conference
- 18:28Speaker 3: as Utah State. So, I guess maybe.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Yeah, probably them, I would imagine. I mean, as I said,
- 18:34Speaker 4: we played Portland State this weekend. But they're. Jeez. Jeez, buddy.
- 18:38Speaker 3: It's fine. We're pro-dog here on the program.
- 18:40Speaker 4: They're. I mean, foe, dude. But Utah State's much better
- 18:47Speaker 4: than Portland State. So I don't really– it probably is
- 18:51Speaker 4: Oregon State, honestly, to be honest with you. That's probably
- 18:53Speaker 4: what it is.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Okay. When you were there, I guess that was a
- 18:56Speaker 3: little bit different.
- 18:56Speaker 5: So maybe Portland State was closer to that equivalency back then,
- 19:00Speaker 5: although maybe not a direct analogy. But for a Utah
- 19:04Speaker 5: team that's now got Utah State, who's got a coach
- 19:06Speaker 5: who's very familiar with them, You know, the talent level
- 19:10Speaker 5: should not be similar. I think Utah State's got a
- 19:13Speaker 5: quarterbacking problem right now. You took the offensive coordinator from
- 19:17Speaker 5: Utah State last year. You took their best wide receiver.
- 19:20Speaker 5: You took their best defensive end from a couple years ago.
- 19:22Speaker 5: These guys are all on Utah's roster right now. So
- 19:26Speaker 5: big chip on the shoulder for the Aggies. What's the
- 19:29Speaker 5: right mental approach as a player going into a game
- 19:33Speaker 5: like this one where It's their Super Bowl, and no
- 19:36Speaker 5: matter how much you try to get yourself up, you
- 19:38Speaker 5: don't feel that way about the game.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Well, I also think it's worth pointing out, too. Utah
- 19:42Speaker 4: State just almost upset Washington. So are they going to
- 19:45Speaker 4: be too on a high from that game or a
- 19:48Speaker 4: downer from that game? What do you think? State sort
- 19:50Speaker 4: of mental? They had a chance to win that game, Sean,
- 19:54Speaker 4: and just didn't get it done. So, I think, look,
- 19:57Speaker 4: every game, every opponent, you know, you have to have
- 20:00Speaker 4: a healthy respect for them. Rivalry games. Is this a
- 20:02Speaker 4: rivalry game for you guys? You consider this like a
- 20:04Speaker 4: rivalry game?
- 20:04Speaker 5: It's the Battle of the Brothers. So it's a rivalry game.
- 20:08Speaker 5: I guess that's, you know, a better way to ask.
- 20:10Speaker 5: It's a rivalry game for Utah State much more than it.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Is for Utah.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that's like what Oregon and Oregon State play now.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Yeah, okay. So, look, I mean, look, the thing about,
- 20:22Speaker 4: you have a new coach, right, and a new culture
- 20:24Speaker 4: to be set. And so I think it's like too
- 20:28Speaker 4: early to even have like a, well, maybe we won't
- 20:32Speaker 4: play as hard in this game. You don't have that.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Every game right now is another opportunity to establish the
- 20:39Speaker 4: culture of Utah. And so I don't think this will
- 20:42Speaker 4: be anything. You guys are, I think, four touchdown favorites.
- 20:43Speaker 4: I don't think this will be anything for you guys.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I think you're going to be just fine and play
- 20:47Speaker 4: this the best you can. And maybe get a couple
- 20:49Speaker 4: out early if you can to get ready to play
- 20:53Speaker 4: next week and start your conference play. But I would
- 20:54Speaker 4: expect Utah to have full attention for this one.
- 21:02Speaker 3: All right. Texas Tech has not looked overly impressive, although
- 21:06Speaker 3: they're 2-0.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Yeah, they should have lost. Those are beavers.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Oregon State might be the best 0-2 team in the country.
- 21:12Speaker 5: They had Houston and Texas Tech, and they pushed both
- 21:15Speaker 5: of them pretty far.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Look, I will just say this, though. I bet on
- 21:19Speaker 4: Oregon State as my favorite wager last week. It was
- 21:22Speaker 4: a very tough spot for Texas Tech, right? Because it's
- 21:25Speaker 4: your first road game. You're playing Houston on Friday. That's
- 21:29Speaker 4: a huge conference game on Friday. It dude was pissing
- 21:32Speaker 4: rain for like half that game of Corvallis. Um, it
- 21:36Speaker 4: was just a, let's win a go home game for
- 21:39Speaker 4: Texas tech. Like I, I don't know how much I
- 21:42Speaker 4: make of having too much to say for either team
- 21:46Speaker 4: off of that one. Um, but the Beavers, you know, they're,
- 21:49Speaker 4: they're playing, uh, very well in a shepherd.
- 21:55Speaker 3: When you look at, um, Oklahoma state.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Pulled off the upset against your ducks.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Not great.
- 22:02Speaker 5: There were a lot of people who were like, they're
- 22:04Speaker 5: the breakout team this year. We love everything about that quarterback.
- 22:08Speaker 5: We love everything about that coach. And then they lost
- 22:11Speaker 5: in week one to Tulsa. But then they come back
- 22:14Speaker 5: the following week with the biggest win of the conference
- 22:17Speaker 5: season so far and upset your Ducks. So how good
- 22:20Speaker 5: are Oklahoma State?
- 22:21Speaker 4: I don't know, man. We just got out of hustle,
- 22:26Speaker 4: physical effort, schemed. you know, if, if they're going to
- 22:32Speaker 4: be able to hit home runs like that on us. Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I mean, absolutely. They're, they're legit. I just don't know how,
- 22:37Speaker 4: how talented Oklahoma state is. That mess to make her
- 22:39Speaker 4: played incredible against us, but we, you know, we just,
- 22:41Speaker 4: guys are open everywhere.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:43Speaker 4: I mean, he didn't, he didn't make like a ton
- 22:44Speaker 4: of like tough throws. He made a, he just, guys
- 22:48Speaker 4: were open. It's like our defense played terrible. And so
- 22:52Speaker 4: I don't, I don't know if Oklahoma state is a,
- 22:55Speaker 4: a threat to win the conference or even a threat
- 22:57Speaker 4: to be like a six win team. I don't know
- 23:00Speaker 4: if that was, you know, if, if I take that
- 23:02Speaker 4: away from that game.
- 23:06Speaker 3: So your level of concern for the ducks one to
- 23:08Speaker 3: 10 is what?
- 23:09Speaker 4: Oh, 10.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:11Speaker 4: That's not good. Um, it's not good because it's an
- 23:15Speaker 4: effort thing. Like defensively, it's an effort thing. And, um, I,
- 23:22Speaker 4: it just, It's alarming, man. Dante Moore doesn't look any better.
- 23:27Speaker 4: It looks worse. You know, the team looked like they
- 23:30Speaker 4: were shell-shocked on Saturday on the sideline. You know, we panicked.
- 23:35Speaker 4: It went four and a fourth down. We probably shouldn't have,
- 23:36Speaker 4: which coaches admitted shouldn't have done. I just, you know,
- 23:41Speaker 4: we got Portland State Friday night. We got USC. So, like,
- 23:44Speaker 4: we better figure it out, man. You know, the switch
- 23:46Speaker 4: can be foot. Like, we're still one of the best,
- 23:49Speaker 4: you know, most talent teams in the country. Like, that
- 23:51Speaker 4: has not changed. The question is, are we going to
- 23:54Speaker 4: play like it? Are we going to continue to play
- 23:57Speaker 4: whatever BS we're doing now? That's the question. It's not
- 24:01Speaker 4: whether or not we're good enough. We're plenty good enough.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Are you going to play like you should? And they
- 24:06Speaker 4: had the dreaded players only meeting, Sean. And they said
- 24:11Speaker 4: that they worked it out and they figured out they're
- 24:14Speaker 4: going to play better, whatever that means.
- 24:17Speaker 3: All right. Well, good luck to everyone involved.
- 24:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I hate players owning meetings. I think they're stupid.
- 24:23Speaker 3: It worked for Michigan.
- 24:25Speaker 4: It did work for Michigan. So maybe it'll work for
- 24:30Speaker 4: my Ducks here. And, yeah, good start for the Utes.
- 24:35Speaker 4: Good start for your Niners. Week one, nice win. Nice
- 24:38Speaker 4: win for them. Yeah, I'm just glad football's back. I
- 24:41Speaker 4: feel bad there's no football today.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Well, Tuesdays, it's hard. It is.
- 24:46Speaker 4: It's hard. We've got the Thunderbats on the field tonight.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Go look for 3-0, baby.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Let's go. Let's go, Thunderbats.
- 24:53Speaker 4: I'm good. I'm a good coach. All right.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Don't throw your shoulder out patting yourself on the back there.
- 25:01Speaker 4: There's a couple 2-0 teams so far. We've thrown seven
- 25:05Speaker 4: different pitchers. Every other team's thrown only three. They just
- 25:08Speaker 4: throw their two best every game. We've thrown seven in
- 25:11Speaker 4: two games so far. Congratulations.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Congratulations.
- 25:14Speaker 4: We just roll them through. Roll them through. Abby's not
- 25:17Speaker 4: going to tell him yet. She's going to probably hear me.
- 25:19Speaker 4: She's not going to pitch tonight. She's going to be
- 25:20Speaker 4: super pissed.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Don't tell her. Well, I'll let you handle that.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us, bud.
- 25:25Speaker 4: All right, buddy. Talk to you next week. Bye, guys.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Jeff Schwartz, former Duck, former New York Giant, Carolina Panther,
- 25:32Speaker 5: et cetera, et cetera. Teammate with Jordan Gross.
