- 0:48Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast Braun.
- 0:55This is a waste of night. Yes it is sir.
- 0:58Yes it is man. Along with Brian Sigler Curtis
- 1:02welcome here, y'all. Oh, y'all about to get some
- 1:07venting. We got beverages.
- 1:11It's been approximately going on for hours since the Hokies fall
- 1:16through the Demon Deacons 23:16. And as I just stated in a wasted
- 1:23day now, wasting game. Absolutely dude.
- 1:30Really a frustrating game to watch?
- 1:33This wasn't? I mean, we're not going to do a
- 1:35whole lot of x's and o's because watching the game, it wasn't a
- 1:38whole lot of x's. And o's, that beat us, we were
- 1:41out there. Consistently beating ourselves,
- 1:44especially on the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:47Yeah, absolutely. So many things today, so many
- 1:51wasted opportunities. So many a pending grossly picks
- 1:57today, arguably probably the worst game of his career as a
- 2:04Hopi. Yeah, I don't think there's
- 2:06really a question. I mean, the UVA game was the
- 2:09only other game that's even in this realm, in my opinion, in
- 2:11terms of how he how he played, and he was significantly worse.
- 2:17In this game that I think he was a TV.
- 2:19A against UVA, there were more periods of of inconsistency.
- 2:25Whereas I felt like you know, he did really well middle of the
- 2:29field and like as soon as we got close to scoring range and just
- 2:32seem like, you know, the light bulb went off a lot of times and
- 2:36play guide inconsistent and you know, he wasn't helped a whole
- 2:40lot by some of the calls we got in that area either.
- 2:42So it was kind of just one kept feeding the other tonight man.
- 2:46Well Play calls. Can I can I get into a place to
- 2:50play call that? If I had not been with my
- 2:53neighbors and they're giving our kids out in his yard, we pull
- 2:57the TV up or watching it, they're both hokey grad.
- 2:59Shout out to Ben and Michelle for having us in the kids over
- 3:02to watch the game. He's pretty calm watching game.
- 3:05Been tip your hat to you when you not once not one time, but
- 3:13who comes inside the 10-yard line.
- 3:18You run a Jet Sweep, through the fucking short side of the field.
- 3:21What the fuck are you thinking? I like it.
- 3:26I like the fire because that's what we're going to need to get
- 3:28back from this man because this was you know, everybody talks
- 3:32about it. I mean whether your Twitter
- 3:34timeline, your friends. I mean we all know the Hokies
- 3:37are going to have that one game. Where they go out, played down
- 3:41to their competition. Make some freaking
- 3:44head-scratching calls. Can't get out of their own damn
- 3:49way. And then, you know, a lot of
- 3:52times that ends up as a loss. And that's what we had tonight,
- 3:54man. It was, it was sad because there
- 3:58were so many opportunities to get back in that game.
- 4:01And none of, I mean, wake wasn't out there videos.
- 4:04I mean, they play the solid game, and they played a pretty
- 4:07mistake-free game, and that's why they beat us.
- 4:10But we can get out of our own way, whether it was all of the
- 4:14miscues on offense, and whether it was on defense, He's just
- 4:17undisciplined. And I don't I'm not talking
- 4:20about just scheme was that was more the early part of the game,
- 4:24but in the second half just being undisciplined and giving
- 4:27them free first downs. I'm making some bonehead
- 4:29decisions. Absolutely,
- 4:44you saw that, right? And it's just I mean at least
- 4:55the defense, you know, they had their good in their bed.
- 5:00Yeah. Which we expecting this year,
- 5:03with the scheme change they only gave up 23 points.
- 5:06You told me and you won't Friday or Thursday night.
- 5:12Thanksgiving 23. As we were sitting here, talking
- 5:47Thursday night, we met Taylor Robinson, our number three guy,
- 5:50right? Let me pay.
- 5:51Or number three guy, we met tendon number two.
- 5:55And you talked about, they like to stay in their shells.
- 5:58They're very disciplined. You're going to have to attack
- 6:00them underneath little short throws.
- 6:03They're going to direct the tackling team so you can get 56
- 6:06yards. You stir stick, movers movers,
- 6:09we averaged 14, 13 Completion. That doesn't sound like a stick
- 6:13moving kind of data. Me know like out the gate our
- 6:17offensive game plan was apparently run outside to a team
- 6:21that sets a really good Edge and throw deep down the sideline to
- 6:26a team that allows a lot of underneath stuff in coverage.
- 6:30So yeah, we definitely were essentially saying, We think
- 6:36we're good enough to attack your strength all day and not take
- 6:39advantage of your weakness. Meanwhile not executing the
- 6:44plays that are that are even being sent in half the time so
- 6:48you know you can bind those things and you know it just
- 6:51feels like you know it's kind of the trifecta man.
- 6:54We talked about it before but it's like it didn't feel like we
- 6:58were properly prepared to play this team especially on offense.
- 7:02It didn't feel like we were properly executed.
- 7:05Eating. And at times, it just looked
- 7:08like we were lost like we like we didn't know like once we move
- 7:11the ball into a scoring area, we just forgot what we were doing.
- 7:17And I've never, I haven't seen that from this team.
- 7:19This year, we've done very good at finishing drives, even even
- 7:23when we kick three, sometimes we did a good job of closing
- 7:27drives. Making some big plays out of
- 7:28nothing and it just seemed like we let little things bother us
- 7:33too much like one little thing goes wrong.
- 7:35Wrong. And all of a sudden, you know,
- 7:37we've got three straight plays that are either negative or
- 7:41don't get us the yards. We need to keep moving.
- 7:44Absolutely, right. I said one skiing thing off.
- 7:46Instantly, let me ask you this. Let's do one said Thursday night
- 7:51that do really well. They set the edge.
- 7:55Well, ma'am. And what did you say?
- 7:56We should attack the middle of the defense.
- 8:01What a good, what to do on offense?
- 8:05We decided to attack the perimeter of the defense, all
- 8:09night, both in the jet Suite game and outside Zone.
- 8:13We decided for whatever reason that, you know, once once we
- 8:17realize that they were setting a very strong edge with the
- 8:20outside Zone that we just kept running it, instead of maybe
- 8:24pivoting two more inside Zone where we could really attack
- 8:26between the tackles neutralized, bash them, a little bit,
- 8:29neutralize those outside linebackers.
- 8:31I mean there every time for like the first few drives, every time
- 8:37it was a obvious Rush down. They were just run blitzing to
- 8:42the side opposite of where Herbert was lining up knowing
- 8:45that he was going to run outside Zone that direction.
- 8:48So if he was to the left of hooker, they were running some
- 8:50sort of run blitz to the right of hooker and just pressing that
- 8:53area. And it took too long for us to
- 8:56adjust and say, alright well maybe we should start making
- 9:00that a true read instead of a just the outside Zone call.
- 9:05And once he did that, that's when hooker got some of those
- 9:07those rushing yards late in the second quarter into the third
- 9:11quarter, but we didn't do it quick enough.
- 9:14And then once we found that, that's what they were doing, we
- 9:16didn't stay with it. Well enough to really do
- 9:19anything there but it was like once the outside Zone wasn't
- 9:23working and you know we threw a couple screens to him but we
- 9:26didn't do anything else to get Herbert involved in the running
- 9:30game at that point like it was like, oh well outside zones not
- 9:33working. So I guess we're going to lean
- 9:34on Booker now like no manufacture this guy, some
- 9:38touches but just stop running into them, strength of the
- 9:40defense, got running to strengthen defense, and let's
- 9:45make the number 8. You didn't get his name and we
- 9:47still don't have his name. You mentioned number eight, the
- 9:49linebacker on Thursday about get to him, guess what you do.
- 9:54He cannot shed block, while you were so focused on the inside
- 9:58the phone and putting Brockett. Number one, if we ended up, we
- 10:03need up running away from him, most of the night.
- 10:04Right? So, he was unblocked and
- 10:06trailing the play, which for an athletic guy.
- 10:08Is exactly what plays into what he does.
- 10:11The best. What he doesn't do well is shed
- 10:14blocks, run at him, make him shed a block.
- 10:18Making sure to bought. No, no.
- 10:20We just gonna let him run run free on the backside and make
- 10:23plays while we set the edge on the opposite side.
- 10:25I mean we knew what we were getting with Boogie bash on but
- 10:28we can't let somebody that could be neutralized, make plays
- 10:32absolutely. So you run to one of the four
- 10:36points in one of the first times in it.
- 10:39It's when I started getting that hit that ugly feeling in my
- 10:42stomach. We get near Midfield at first
- 10:45third down and its third like one or two.
- 10:48So it shortened well I'm like guess good.
- 10:50We're going to we're going to get two or three yards, they run
- 10:54the ball and somehow James Mitchell, love them to death.
- 10:58Great player potential future probe into all-acc selection,
- 11:02right? Trying to block Boogie bash.
- 11:06Mm, and I'm sitting here saying every now and then I said it's
- 11:14okay. and you did that and it was
- 11:28again, it was another outside Zone and I mean he He kind of
- 11:34did a little little hump move with with Mitchell, guided got
- 11:37inside. And I mean, blue, the play up
- 11:39before really got a chance to get going.
- 11:41And I mean, that was kind of the story of the night.
- 11:44I mean, I think Basham had a good game but like we didn't
- 11:48scheme to really take him out of the game.
- 11:52And we kind of schemed in a way that gave some of their other
- 11:56players, an easier night than they should have had what we
- 12:02should have been. We should have been Forcing
- 12:03their linebackers in safeties with some underneath and some
- 12:07easy throat to make tackles against re-tape.
- 12:10Ian Mitchell against herbivory and Flash, but we didn't do
- 12:13that. We have to do that.
- 12:15The only player that was consistently getting to the
- 12:18second level in the running game was hidden hooker.
- 12:21We weren't doing anything to get Herbert to the second level.
- 12:25There was only I mean we had one good run by by Herbert that
- 12:29callback on a hold which was all the bogus and what we will get.
- 12:33The referee situation later that was a problem tonight, but
- 12:37that's not what losses, this game.
- 12:38No. So we'll go ahead and get that
- 12:40out of the way. I know, I know there are some
- 12:42folks that are complaining about the referee situation to their
- 12:46point. They are, right?
- 12:48But that didn't cost us the game.
- 12:49We shot ourselves in the foot and then there was no way.
- 12:53It should have. We should have let the referees
- 12:55impact that game and ultimately we did.
- 12:56And that's why we lost. So we were moving the All, yes,
- 13:04that's that's the frustrating thing is that, you know, we're
- 13:07only, you know, 40 or 50 yards behind our, our season average
- 13:12in the game. But we're 20 plus points behind
- 13:18our season average in scoring. That's, that's significant guys.
- 13:23You're talking about, you're talking about less than one
- 13:25decent Drive in total yards behind our season average.
- 13:30But significantly lower, Our in terms of the points that we put
- 13:35on the board that tells me a lot of things, I mean, we've already
- 13:38said it once, but holy shit, the amount of points that were left
- 13:44on this football field by this offense.
- 13:47And that's, that's, I mean, we'll talk about the two missed
- 13:50field goals. One probably should have been a
- 13:53make that wasn't the other was going to be a difficult make
- 13:57anyway. So I mean that, that is what it
- 13:59is. You're not, you're not going to
- 14:01make all those 50 plus yarders. So, I'll let the one slide.
- 14:06The other one probably should have been a make.
- 14:08So that's that's at least three there.
- 14:11Two times getting inside the Red Zone.
- 14:13And not, not just punching it in is, is so sorry. 3 times, 3
- 14:17times getting so two times settling for a short three and
- 14:23then one time throwing a pic, which I mean, was partially on
- 14:27hooker and partially, on the receiver.
- 14:28There, we, it was a little high. But we gotta, we gotta talk to
- 14:33Hooker a little bit here because all day when he was throwing
- 14:36over the middle, he was missing high and you can't miss high
- 14:38over the middle. That's that's the cardinal sin
- 14:40of quarterbacking. Well, hold on.
- 14:44Was it too? Was it three or was it for Hold
- 14:48on. Was it for another one?
- 14:50Well, there was two picks in the end zone, right?
- 14:53No, no, just one. There was just the one, pick the
- 14:56little yoga through the seam on the other theme on one, but that
- 14:59was that word in the end zone though.
- 15:02The other, but we weren't in the scoring area where the other
- 15:08thing that I'll say and this again, this makes me mad at
- 15:13happen in the UNC game and it's happening again here tonight.
- 15:16So once again, I put this on the person calling the place and
- 15:20then he's going to get bust a lot and I bust him a lot and I
- 15:24probably busted Stein spring way too much back in the day.
- 15:27This is a 10-point game and we get the ball and it's like I
- 15:31think it's six minutes left. I'd have to go back and look.
- 15:35But there was no urgency. We got this, we got this.
- 15:40Do we end up to and we're downtown?
- 15:42Where is the urgency to get going?
- 15:45And I'm sitting here that's on the coaches.
- 15:47That's not only on the play caller, that's on the head coach
- 15:50because if the head coach is not seen the urgency, you need to be
- 15:53streaming like get on your asses and go have enough time to get
- 15:59this ball three times. We have two possessions left.
- 16:02Now, I want to say we it was it was like 8:30 left and then we
- 16:06just need a few texts. I thought you texted me and
- 16:09said, we need to score within two minutes and it just wasn't
- 16:12happening. Hold on.
- 16:13I'm gonna get you on here because I, this is the one
- 16:16that's the one, that drove me, crazy.
- 16:18And I do have all scoring please up because we kicked a field
- 16:21goal. Tom nails like a 50-yarder.
- 16:24He was already redeemed of the previous drive.
- 16:29He missed, he missed. He came back and made the one
- 16:32that Drive. Exactly.
- 16:34So here we go. And I might be talking about the
- 16:40previous drive when I was referencing the there's five
- 16:44minutes left on the positive. There's five minutes left on the
- 16:48clock. It literally took us two and a
- 16:51half minutes. You could gay to kick a field
- 16:54goal to a half minutes to go. What is that?
- 16:5954-yard field goal will be what 35-yard line ruff.
- 17:02Flee. Yep, it literally took us.
- 17:07Let's see 22 to go 35 yard. It took us two and a half
- 17:13minutes. That's all that's still go to 1.
- 17:18This is on you because if you're not lying to fire under the play
- 17:21collars s and under that offense is asked to get going, it's on
- 17:25you. At some point, you got to say,
- 17:30guys, what are you doing? Get this right, get going, get
- 17:35down the field. I mean you know not everything
- 17:39can be put on the players at some point.
- 17:42The coach has to be cognizant of the situation and understand
- 17:46that, you know, There's no, there's no there isn't a way of
- 17:52doing this faster than it should be done.
- 17:54You got to get up there and do it and consistently on that
- 17:59drive. I will say, yeah, you're right.
- 18:00They they were they didn't they weren't they didn't seem like
- 18:05they appreciated the lack of time remaining in the game and I
- 18:10don't know if that is Corn overthinking and not getting the
- 18:15plays out there fast enough or what.
- 18:16But it just you know, it's frustrating that we're having
- 18:20these conversations because this is probably one of the better
- 18:22offenses we've ever had. In terms of yeah talent and
- 18:26ability and there's no way that that that often should be held
- 18:31to under 20 points. Yeah, it's not with the
- 18:35playmakers that you have players all over the line.
- 18:42It's essentially like it's essentially like maybe they're
- 18:49trying to be corporate guys. We're going to put these teams
- 18:51in the toughest position possible to see how they do.
- 18:54When you're like, your job is to win a football game.
- 18:57Not put people in really hard position to overcome the golden
- 19:02score will whether it be well, they're giving us the TV that
- 19:05you take it. Yeah.
- 19:07And I mean I know these things kind of happen, man because I
- 19:10mean one of the offenses I was in college, man.
- 19:13Was what was the highest scoring offense across all divisions
- 19:19that year? But we have one game against a
- 19:22team that was like at the time like four and four.
- 19:27So I mean we should have been able to score against them if we
- 19:29didn't do anything else and we go out there and we put up think
- 19:33we put up 18 when it went in like 18 to 12 and it was like
- 19:36one of those ugly. Games in early November.
- 19:39And I just remember thinking like, Like looking at, we are
- 19:44way too talented to not be putting up at least a 30 burger
- 19:48against this team and I feel like that's what I was looking
- 19:50at them. Like this team is just they're
- 19:53not executing and the calls are not flowing.
- 19:57And again, like you said, there's no sense of urgency.
- 20:00So we had kind of that. Trifecta, that really was, was
- 20:03shooting Us in the foot on offense, man.
- 20:05So very disappointed across the board.
- 20:08I will go ahead and make a note here.
- 20:12We had put Brock In as our number one and I had kind of
- 20:16thrown in Luke 2, Nu du as as one.
- 20:18Be. Luke did not have a good game.
- 20:20No, he didn't know he'll float, he looks slow.
- 20:24Basham. Got got him a couple times.
- 20:26The other defensive end I can't think of his name right now.
- 20:30He got him once. Yeah, I know, I know hooker held
- 20:33the ball longer than he should have a couple times, but yeah,
- 20:39didn't do a very good job on the edge.
- 20:41I know this team is good at setting, the Edge.
- 20:43But you're supposed to be pretty damn good yourself.
- 20:46So sometimes you just got to nut up and he had to take the L when
- 20:50it comes and this is going to be an elf or look tenuta, help
- 20:52remove tenuta. But again, maybe it's something
- 20:55we're seeing with covid more and more.
- 20:57As guy says, come back about the linebacking corps.
- 21:02Think about the safeties. Maybe this is something you
- 21:05can't just throw guys, if they have it thrown right back into
- 21:08what they were doing, even with a full week of practice.
- 21:10Yeah. And I mean I'd say across the
- 21:13board the offensive line did not have a great game, they were
- 21:16getting they were getting fitted up but they were not dominating
- 21:19the way. We've seen them dominate the
- 21:21last few games in terms of just taking over those blocks, even
- 21:24even Christian Daris, all had a couple where he either whiffed
- 21:28on a pull or something like that.
- 21:29Like I think there was one where I want to say it was one where
- 21:34hooker kept it, and he whiffed on the pool and, you know,
- 21:36hooker was able to fall forward for like 45 yards, but I could
- 21:39have been like a 20, 30 yard gain if he just gets a decent,
- 21:43block on the pool. So, I mean, there's is a whole
- 21:46lot of little things out there that really just kind of Put the
- 21:51brakes on the offense and it put the brakes on the offense at the
- 21:55worst possible time. Like it wasn't like we had a
- 21:57bunch of three announce. We were consistently moving the
- 21:59football against this defense and then we would just have
- 22:03brain farts. Absolute brain fart.
- 22:07All right, the clock back there. Chimes.
- 22:10So I think we should move. Let's do talk a little more
- 22:13about the defense. We've done a lot of the offense,
- 22:15we said I'm gonna apologize in advance for my parents house and
- 22:18the only place that I won't wait.
- 22:20People up is in a place with a grandfather clock.
- 22:22So y'all going to be hearing some chiming?
- 22:24No, but it'll also be to me and UK, maybe we should move to the
- 22:27next subject. Let's talk about the defense, my
- 22:30opinion, Brian. I think they had they're good,
- 22:32they're bad moment, I mentioned that earlier.
- 22:34They only gave up 23 points, they held a team that had been
- 22:36scoring 30 in ACC play Too Well to a whole touchdown under their
- 22:40average. But what what what happened and
- 22:44you talked about some of the stuff we talked about not
- 22:46filling the gap. they were missing tackles when we needed
- 22:51to take down, but the drive just before
- 23:16half-time Oh God, where we could not get off the field on fourth
- 23:20down. That just bugged the shit out of
- 23:25me because a couple times we were in place to stop them and
- 23:30did not. And that's unacceptable mean
- 23:32it's one thing. If, you know, they block you or,
- 23:36you know, even if you go out and full speed, miss a tackle,
- 23:40that's fine. But when you're essentially
- 23:42giving the ground, you're there, you're there to make the play.
- 23:45You either are too hesitant with the tackle or you end up, you
- 23:50know, letting the running back. Just run you over for the first
- 23:53down like no, make the plug. All right Brian, hold on.
- 23:59Just so, first of all, that was a lie.
- 24:01That was a clock killer 217 plays 75 yards for the touchdown
- 24:06to go up. 1710 we never LED in this game.
- 24:10You title as the only time we were tied with them.
- 24:13So I go scroll through the drive and let's start counting third
- 24:16and three. Let me work pass.
- 24:19That's 1/3 sticks, they get five but they go for it fourth and
- 24:24one again, the 11 yard run, that's to morph into again.
- 24:29They get a seven year old paths, that's three fourth and one
- 24:34again, 13, they get a five yard, a three yard run plus a 5 yard
- 24:40facemask vests for so two or three of those were fourth
- 24:44bounds. Yep.
- 24:46So they can they got yards on Third and then got enough yours
- 24:49to feel comfortable going for it on 4th that, that was such a
- 24:54killer because we just had an, it's like, I'm sitting there
- 24:57with my neighbor and I'm Saying, we just stop right here.
- 25:00We're feeling it. Can get back, get the lead.
- 25:02That was the, that was the time that the offense was humming,
- 25:06the best. Yep.
- 25:07You know, the drive just before that, where we got to 10 and
- 25:11then the drive just before the interception that close out the
- 25:15half, like those two drives, we looked like a competent offense.
- 25:19Pretty much every play. Yep.
- 25:22And you having that long drive, where the offense is sitting for
- 25:26so long and then they get the end up getting You have seven
- 25:29points. I was I was hoping it was like
- 25:32I'll just hold them to three here.
- 25:34You know, they've had a long drive but despite you know, them
- 25:38converting a fourth down before we could get the ball back, when
- 25:41they weren't in scoring range, there in scoring range of just
- 25:44get off the field, just get off the field, just get off, and he
- 25:47just never it never happened, man.
- 25:49It that was, that was so frustrated.
- 25:51That was the most frustrating defensive driving the game.
- 25:54I will say, other than lack of discipline in The second half in
- 26:00terms of, I'll see how they handle themselves from a penalty
- 26:04standpoint. We put, I thought they played a
- 26:06pretty good second half. Well, yeah, man, I mean, the
- 26:09beacon settle down and they adjusted, I mean, we gave up
- 26:12over, give up about, 250 yards on the ground again, but but I
- 26:20expect that against this team, okay?
- 26:23But 161 was in the first half, the adjustments were made, they
- 26:26got less than 189 yards in the second half.
- 26:31So the adjustments were made for the defense, they got 217.
- 26:36Wake Forest kick two field goals in the second half.
- 26:49They got gassed early. Essentially we got it fixed at
- 26:52one thing. I'm learning about ham.
- 26:54Pretty quick is just because his initial game plan isn't
- 26:58brilliant. He is going to make an
- 27:00adjustment. He is good at getting putting
- 27:03guys in the right spots on what the other teams doing.
- 27:08He's diagnosing and making the right change.
- 27:10It was so it's one thing to say, okay, I know what we're doing
- 27:13wrong, but the fact that he's actually making changes that are
- 27:16having a marked impact on the game that that showing both
- 27:20growth in hit from his first game to now and also that, I
- 27:25think some of the guys are starting to get a little more
- 27:27accustomed to what he what? Does and how what their role is
- 27:32within that. Because, I mean, again, like I
- 27:35said, other than some of those mental lapses, the defense
- 27:38played pretty damn good in the second half.
- 27:41You know, they weren't lights out but that's a good enough
- 27:44offense, where if you hold them to less than 10 points in a
- 27:49half, you're doing something pretty good.
- 27:51Exactly. And so, you know, that that sort
- 27:55of big ones, you know, they did move from Leverage at times.
- 27:59One piece about using the leverage.
- 28:03We mentioned earlier wrong gaps. Early cost us some really big
- 28:06plays and you know, at least one defense and we just said it, at
- 28:15least with defense. We see things that they're doing
- 28:18like, we my untrained eyes can literally see.
- 28:22Okay, we're playing better. We're doing some things
- 28:24different. We're getting to our spots
- 28:25quicker. We're doing different on the
- 28:28line we're making it. Tougher for them to move the
- 28:31ball. Yep.
- 28:33And I can respect that and I like that.
- 28:37Now, will it? Hams got to figure out and is a
- 28:42figure out what to do to start the game hot?
- 28:46Yeah, every you haven't read it, even be better because we ended
- 28:52up Having a good not great first drive, and then they end up
- 28:57scoring first. So We've got to be able to win
- 29:03if we don't come out hot on offense, to be able to get a
- 29:05stop and still keep that opening kickoff momentum.
- 29:08Because when we haven't scored first, it's been kind of a slog
- 29:15when we've been able to get out there and kind of put pressure
- 29:19on the other team to score points.
- 29:20I mean, that's kind of plays into what we do because not only
- 29:24can we be more Reliant upon the running game but also the
- 29:28defense You know, teams playing behind 10 to take a little bit
- 29:35more risk as they're trying to play catch up there.
- 29:37And I think our defense takes better advantage of those
- 29:39situations. So we get started flat on
- 29:46offense, we've lost both. Oh, yeah, and I'm gonna go ahead
- 29:51and point it out, man. All three Road games we have not
- 29:55started. Well, the first quarter has been
- 29:57bad in all three Road games. It's true.
- 30:05Do you game though? With the exception of the
- 30:06fumble? We sort of control the first
- 30:09half carry more than we did. 110,000.
- 31:03He was very efficient, but they weren't getting big plays,
- 31:06they're making some stick movers and defensive tackles were, you
- 31:11know that. That's the that's what drives
- 31:13you sort of crazy about the defense is the guys, we
- 31:16highlighted all played. They did not play.
- 31:20Let's go on a scale of one to 10.
- 31:22Do they play 10? Did they play 0 or 1?
- 31:27No, did they play five notes? They were somewhere in that
- 31:29like, six and a half to eight. Strange.
- 31:32Yeah. Right.
- 31:33That's where I put them. Maybe I'm putting them on for
- 31:36those who say the secondary played an above-average game and
- 31:39I say the linebackers and defensive tackles played a good
- 31:43game, not a great game. Yes, that's again.
- 31:47So they didn't, you know, I would probably be be - for the,
- 31:54for the corners. I'd say going to go Masala be
- 31:56and probably see the C plus for the The other guy said, I mean,
- 32:01they didn't nothing nothing they did was bad and like I said, the
- 32:08biggest - that I have for those groups is that, you know, you
- 32:12had humid and Pollard that really just had some boneheaded
- 32:17discipline plays that that hurts at Key moments, man.
- 32:21Well, you would just the targeting and we were watching
- 32:26it with our other neighbor, the coach and he said it doing coach
- 32:29lat. Ton of believe, what?
- 32:31He's like, that's a targeting. He's like, he's like, you know,
- 32:35and they're saying, they route because a, they didn't throw the
- 32:37flag. They reviewed it after the fact.
- 32:39Yeah, hold on. Let's let me pull back on that
- 32:42because we're going to get into these rest in a few minutes.
- 32:47But yeah, they were playing hot in Hewitt.
- 32:49Will talk about pain in the wild but him.
- 32:52Yes, he was visibly upset. Now if you remember, if you've
- 32:56not heard during the game or any game this year player, Joe,
- 32:59Ejected helping stay on the sidelines.
- 33:02They had to take you to the back because you, it was livid Hue
- 33:05without mine. We he got a sack on that play
- 33:10Saget's essentially. Nullified with the targeting 15,
- 33:14which would have moved them like to the 34, maybe 40, he gets the
- 33:19other half of that which gives moves them.
- 33:23Well, the field position it took it was a went from a major
- 33:28positive plate. A to like a back-breaking -
- 33:31play. Yep.
- 33:34In just a couple seconds man between And like, you know, like
- 33:39I said, we're going to talk about the rest man, but you
- 33:42know, Hewitt in that situation, I get his frustration but you
- 33:45can't make something that you got bad words, like, you know,
- 33:51don't don't let that beat. You can't let something that you
- 33:53can't control beat you and he did in this case he did in that
- 33:57case. Yeah.
- 33:58And you know, all day and only wise and we'll get into the rest
- 34:01but all day. I mean, 10 112 yards, I do math.
- 34:06112 yards is Enough. It's into an end zone and when
- 34:09you lose by a touchdown, along with three turnovers while,
- 34:13countless errors, if it ends up the way, it ends up on the drive
- 34:20where we took over with like, just under 10 minutes left in
- 34:24that, run were Herbert breaks a big one and it gets called back.
- 34:31Doug, number two. I think her it was like a 30
- 34:33yard or and again, it comes back.
- 34:35And I'm like this, this is the The epitome of the day we were
- 34:39having, man. It's just It was completely
- 34:43indicative of the day we were having.
- 34:45And just man these frustrate me more than ones like you and see
- 34:52where you felt like for one reason or another, they just had
- 34:56our number like it didn't, this didn't feel like the better team
- 35:00won and that's what's really frustrating.
- 35:04That's why we're drinking at 11. Not sitting well, I think we'd
- 35:10still be having a celebration here in this game but it's like,
- 35:13yeah, drinking to be like, what the fuck?
- 35:16Hmm, alright so we got to we got to more main topics, we're going
- 35:19to touch here. We're so we're going to talk a
- 35:21little bit more about the refs here in a second and then we're
- 35:23going to take a little bit of a dive into the coaching staff and
- 35:27what they need to do going forward.
- 35:32Let's go for it. I think the other one I might
- 35:36drop more f-bombs and Anybody that is with their children at
- 35:41the beginning of this because you know, when I uh, ponds are
- 35:43coming, maybe I am. Sorry, I have dropped a lot
- 35:46tonight. This is definitely like a listen
- 35:49to in the car, on the way to work, not a taking your kids to
- 35:53school situation, for those that are actually taking their kids
- 35:56to school in this situation. Exactly.
- 36:00So okay, first of all the refs, yeah, one of these particular
- 36:07calls That stand out to you how their kids catch interference on
- 36:11an onside kick and hits the ground.
- 36:14You know whether or not it, hit the ground.
- 36:16You've got to take a fucking look at that, right?
- 36:19You've got to at least look at it.
- 36:21No way that Repsol in real-time is that ball did not hit the
- 36:24ground. First of all y'all, this got big
- 36:28man, upset. His eyes got about is big as a
- 36:32damn cue ball. Like, I beg you, if you are near
- 36:36the head official at there, you would have probably smacked him
- 36:38like no. But I used to coach, I would
- 36:42talk so much trash to officials. Man, you they would have had to
- 36:46kick me out of the game after that one, because after
- 36:49everything we had been through, we finally get a three.
- 36:51And, you know, there's time. It's like, and that's the
- 36:56double. What?
- 36:56Like? Why not?
- 36:57Just do flag it. They ended up getting the ball.
- 36:59Just a flag it. What's up?
- 37:05Because you can't, you can't be up here.
- 37:15They showed it and I'm looking like, well, he didn't fair catch
- 37:17it. He's like, sitting here, trying
- 37:18to catch the ball in there, like, fair catch it to me that
- 37:21look like he the kicker. Hit the top of the nose and the
- 37:27one where, you know, you slam it into the ground and then it gets
- 37:30the high bounce. And that's what it did look like
- 37:34in real time. So how they saw that he under
- 37:37towed it and it never touched the ground.
- 37:39We couldn't there's no way they saw that in real time.
- 37:43I mean and like I said, I don't have a problem.
- 37:46I have a problem with the flag in general, but if you're going
- 37:48to throw the flag at least look at it because there's no way you
- 37:52saw it in real time and you were 100% sure that it didn't hit the
- 37:56ground on sidekick anyway. Because a to your point is you,
- 38:04you can't say what happened. Because if I mean, is there
- 38:08Brian has their penalty where if you attempt to on or you you
- 38:11attempt to fair catch a onside kick that hits the ground, you
- 38:15know, the heck that may be the easiest way to never lose it on
- 38:19so I can just throw your hands in the air.
- 38:21Just throw them up. Haircuts.
- 38:22It's a my knowledge ever since they put in the the kick.
- 38:25Catch interference rule. No one has kicked the ball in a
- 38:29way that you know people used to be Papa.
- 38:32Yep. And to my knowledge, that's not
- 38:35taught anymore. It's either you know, you top
- 38:39knows it, where it Dives and bounces real quick.
- 38:42You do the circle move where it kind of brought him down and he
- 38:50got to it. Yes, you can do that or you do
- 38:53the little nudge where you just kind of push it forward in the
- 38:57middle of the kicking unit and usually try to let the The
- 39:01kicker recover, it lets get away from that one.
- 39:05Let's go to one with probably near and dear to your heart.
- 39:08The huge 30-yard run by juice where they show the play.
- 39:14Doug. Nestor was just blocking his
- 39:15guy. Yeah and that was a momentum
- 39:21breaking play because we get that place like up.
- 39:23Here we go. It was about to happen.
- 39:26We're about to go pop on in. It's another where you know it
- 39:30was away from the bowl I didn't see clearly that, you know,
- 39:37we're there was the hands outside of the shoulder pads or
- 39:41anything like, like everything was the guy was on the ground
- 39:44when the flap was flying. Yeah.
- 39:46Like ground already. I mean it's frustrating because
- 39:52like, At that point in time an offensive lineman.
- 39:59So I know I'm going to be biased here, but if your hands aren't
- 40:04outside or you're not pretty much pulling a guy to the
- 40:07ground. You should swallow the flag
- 40:10every time. Number two.
- 40:11You should definitely swallow the flag in that situation,
- 40:16where the, it's running away from where the block is taking
- 40:20place. And there's not some sort of
- 40:23egregious Showing their it's almost like someone said, hey
- 40:29these guys are rushing for too many yards reps.
- 40:31Take a look at it and they like overcorrected.
- 40:36Oh my gosh. Okay.
- 40:39All right, well let's get to the the one that That really hurt
- 40:45was the huge flag again. I'm out.
- 40:49It's we're outside. So the volume we've got it up
- 40:52but it's still tough to see just where we at.
- 40:55And I don't see a flag where there with Coach who lives
- 40:59across the street and eat and he says that's targeting.
- 41:03I'm like, well yeah but they didn't floor flag.
- 41:04Do you can't review and he's like I think they're reviewing
- 41:06it when can you just review a targeting call?
- 41:10That's not called on the feet. Is that fun for the game?
- 41:13This year, I don't know if that change if it did, I'm not aware
- 41:16of it. I think that that's something.
- 41:19We be aware of the right that we would have been a big story
- 41:23where if you're targeting a guy, they can look at it even if
- 41:25there's no flag on the play. I don't know man.
- 41:30I'm going to actually look it up real quick.
- 41:33Let's go for ten here, efforting, but either way, I
- 41:36mean that play goes from a sack where I believe it would have
- 41:43Ben. No, Thursday's this is not off
- 41:47to use. Apparently this is an old Rule
- 41:50and then really, it's just so not off to use door, but
- 41:56apparently it was added in 2016. Allows replay officials to call
- 42:02targeting from upstairs, okay? Well, let's see if they, if
- 42:07Clemson or North Carolina or Miami will get that thrown on
- 42:11them at any time this year. Year.
- 42:14I'm going to make a bet. Yes I'm gonna have yeah it's not
- 42:17going to happen to them but that happens.
- 42:21It's looks like a big sack of way behind change the one of
- 42:27those momentum building plays and then everything happened
- 42:31Hewitt lost his mind you know, in and I think it is because
- 42:37it's a guy. That plays hard who's undersized
- 42:43to gives everything leaves it on the field that if you look at
- 42:46the play did it look dirty. We can't see the launch angle
- 42:54from where he would came from. Yeah.
- 42:58You know, I mean it was I thought it was more questionable
- 43:02than it being like Oh, that's blatant.
- 43:06Again, we're however many years into this thing and I still
- 43:09don't know what a targeting looks like.
- 43:10If you showed me one domain, I don't know where the line is.
- 43:20And that's the problem with these things that you don't
- 43:23really know where the line is. Because sometimes, you know, you
- 43:27think it's definitely an Action and they stay.
- 43:29And then sometimes you think, oh, that's not even close and
- 43:32then they get kicked. So, you know, I still don't know
- 43:35where the line is. Like I said, I know a bad one
- 43:39when I see it, but that's about all.
- 43:41I know at this point, man. Well, I think it's the piece of
- 43:45He's targeting A good rule. Yes absolutely I think they very
- 43:49good rule to have it. You're trying to teach better on
- 43:53the middle of the game, put in some cases it's well a wasn't
- 43:58malicious be did anybody change angles on the was he essentially
- 44:04was going for his head as soon as he left or is it one of these
- 44:08things? Where the way he left he was
- 44:11going for his chest? And his angle came up and just
- 44:17got him in the head. Yeah, I mean, I feel like it's
- 44:21this way like they tried to make it objective in terms of ruling
- 44:27out intent. But then they've now they've
- 44:29made it objective. In terms of what is and is not
- 44:33this type of contact because you know I get you don't want to you
- 44:39know. You don't want to assume intent
- 44:44either for or against whether the player was going, you know,
- 44:48attempting to hit the player in that ring, that range, or or
- 44:51region. But at the same time by removing
- 44:56intent, you're essentially taking away part of the way you
- 45:01objectively. Look at the hit all together
- 45:04because I mean, if I'm a guy that's aiming at a chest and all
- 45:07of a sudden, my aiming point is now ahead.
- 45:12That's a problem. And that's not on the defender
- 45:15mean the defender can only do so much to avoid that.
- 45:19So I feel like like I said taking away, some of the
- 45:22subjectivity is caused only more subjectivity because your end up
- 45:26looking at something else different now.
- 45:27And it's almost objective to the point of well, this is the rule
- 45:34regardless of any circumstances that take place on the field and
- 45:38there's very few situations where that That should be the
- 45:43case but I don't know. What do I know I'm an offensive
- 45:46lineman? Yeah, we gotta say, you know, in
- 45:51some of the interviews, you know, they need to be more
- 45:53disciplined and stuff. And, you know, but in a game
- 46:00like today, there was an unspecified personal foul
- 46:02because they call it and they didn't show anything.
- 46:05And I hate those. I hate those so much as like
- 46:07what happened. If there's a personal but you
- 46:10need to show it. You need to get, make sure you
- 46:13get the number and then you show the replay.
- 46:15So can you tell me why? Hey homes like why it and show
- 46:26it? Like I don't know whether it was
- 46:28just the camera crew couldn't find what was called or or what,
- 46:32at that point. So, you know, let's there's
- 46:35plenty of things we can bag on the rest for.
- 46:37But as we said at the beginning of this, we should, we shouldn't
- 46:41have let The refs be able to determine this outcome.
- 46:44This should have been a two score game, going into some of
- 46:48the key moments towards the end. You know, whether we ended up
- 46:52covering or not, it is, you know, it relevant.
- 46:57At this point we should have had, it should have been a two
- 46:59score game going into the fourth quarter and we should have let
- 47:02the rest even be able to have any sort of say in the outcome
- 47:05here. So this is one hundred percent
- 47:07on Virginia Tech. But that doesn't mean the rest
- 47:09and make some some pretty had a pretty rough day.
- 47:13Absolutely release. All right.
- 47:16So let's let y'all I think we just the way we've mentioned it
- 47:21here. The players, the game plans that
- 47:25were out there or not executed significantly.
- 47:30Well we've already mentioned that with Hamilton the early,
- 47:34the adjustments. He made it, sort of fixed it,
- 47:38but again, his issue is multiple times now.
- 47:42Teams have, you know, essentially gotten out even in
- 47:45the BC game, we don't force a turnover, they're moving the
- 47:48ball. He's got his initial game plans
- 47:52to your point. What you said earlier on where
- 47:54it when we're not humming early on offense or we're trying to
- 47:56find our groove, we're not just getting gassed and giving up
- 48:00points. Yeah, you're right man, we need
- 48:03to just be better out the gate, both on offense and defense and
- 48:09that this applies to all these Road games, man.
- 48:13All of these Road games, we have not looked great out the jump
- 48:16against BC, even though we made some adjustments there out the
- 48:21jump, we were not playing. Well, we've got to be better in
- 48:25the first quarter on both sides of the ball, but especially on
- 48:29defense. Because that's when we really
- 48:30struggled to get some stops, we've let big gash plays happen
- 48:35in the first quarter in pretty much every game at this point
- 48:40except for NC State. What, and fortunately for Duke,
- 48:44we were able to hold them to just three points on that one.
- 48:49And then obviously some of the other games, it's been, you
- 48:54know, a lot worse with with what happened today and then what
- 48:58happened against NC against you and see, just got to be better
- 49:02out the gate. I don't know if it's a game plan
- 49:05issue or an execution issue or just not Not playing well.
- 49:19We see plain significantly better.
- 49:24That's why I don't think it's as much as in there to Mexico, it's
- 49:27an execution of the initial game plan, but the adjustments, it
- 49:32better? Why we're playing better.
- 49:34The visor point I need to I'll say this, I think what we're not
- 49:38doing is We're not dictating terms out the gate.
- 49:41We're kind of letting them dictate the terms and reacting
- 49:45and then once we figure out, you know, how they're trying to play
- 49:49the game, we're adjusting to that and then we're figuring
- 49:51out, okay well they're doing this so we can attack here but
- 49:54we're not doing a good job of game-planning where we can
- 49:57dictate the terms early on in the game.
- 50:01And I think that that's what's hurting us right now is that
- 50:03we're not asserting ourselves on defense and kind of going out
- 50:07there and just You know, taking their will early, it's more of a
- 50:13we're going to feel you out. Okay, this is what you're doing
- 50:15now. We're going to attack and take
- 50:17away some of those weapons but we're not doing that at the gate
- 50:20so that's got to get better. I don't know if that's a, you
- 50:24know, a game plan issue or just not breaking down the tape the
- 50:29way we need to. So we know what they're going to
- 50:31try to do. I will say that they had a
- 50:33different game plan in the running game than I thought they
- 50:35were out the gate, they definitely went more.
- 50:38The Bill Smith, one cut kind of quick hitters then the in the
- 50:42slow mesh RPO, there were still, I mean they still had the slow
- 50:44mesh but it was they went more with Bill Smith on those early
- 50:47carries. And yeah, and he said that that
- 50:50one cut kind of got us, man. And I think probably what it was
- 50:54with the one cut was us where we saw in the UNC game.
- 50:58We were times really early in that game.
- 51:01We were making in decisions, link to the Fitz late to the
- 51:04fits and he was able to get to the second level and Like I said
- 51:08he was, he's the guy that early in the down.
- 51:11If he got to the second level, he was dangerous.
- 51:13And then you know we ended up letting him take advantage of
- 51:18that on the edge, man. Well since when they were saying
- 51:21we're not we're you have to make a choice.
- 51:22Versus the patient guy will deal with him, will let him run a
- 51:26little later. Well, let him later when it's
- 51:29and he had some success but we also threw him through several
- 51:31negative plays in the second half as well.
- 51:33So we'll give them credit for understanding what we're doing.
- 51:38What we were doing bad on me. Now, we're filling and
- 51:43everything. Yeah, well, let's get begin.
- 51:47Because we're going to be, we can lash it to defense as
- 51:51bronto's over there, and we got it, right.
- 52:02You will get 12 of them man. Just wait about
- 52:15midnight man. Let's do it.
- 52:17The bell of told that night our head coach I told you earlier is
- 52:21the first time I'm going to put it this way my confidence and is
- 52:26our head coach went down at times today, okay.
- 52:30And In what it is. Is I'm going to just, I'll say
- 52:38it bluntly, the person he's allowing to run this offense.
- 52:43Does not know how to fully run this offense that and I'm gonna
- 52:48put it on this analogy or we grew up in a town where there
- 52:51are people who essentially have Camaros Mustangs if they go down
- 52:59to some of the drag strips and they race them right?
- 53:02Yep. I'll work that we worked with
- 53:06the guy. Yeah, 68.
- 53:07Nova would drag racer. And Big Dave, you have to get
- 53:16his car set up and you have to race it.
- 53:20Where we go up there. We got.
- 53:21You have to really get a car set up, but then you hear about them
- 53:25going and they did not have a good thing at the direction
- 53:27because they did not know how to drive the car.
- 53:29Yep, that's what we have on offense.
- 53:32I think, I think the person who is creating, he knows how to
- 53:38tune up the part that Big Stone Gap play, Man.
- 53:41Jesus, that was a thing of you. There was nobody within him that
- 53:43was a beautiful play design, some of the jet sweeps today.
- 53:47Beautiful play design. He does not know how to get into
- 53:51the car though and drive it. It how you need to drive it on
- 53:58every game or on every Drive, make sense.
- 54:04It does, man, it does. And I mean, watching it, I kind
- 54:09of, I mean, I see some of the same type things that you're
- 54:11talking about when we look at, The offensive play calling and
- 54:18I'm going to specifically say the play calling because as you
- 54:21said, I think the design of the offense is very good.
- 54:25Damn boy. But I think that the combination
- 54:29of calling and execution leaves something to be desired and You
- 54:37know, it there's moments that it looks good.
- 54:40And then there's moments that I'm like, I just I scratch my
- 54:43head. I'm like, what what are you
- 54:46trying to even in do their fourth?
- 54:50I get two weeks short sides and you know, I mean a couple times
- 55:00we had Jets, we've calls and I don't know if it was a If it's
- 55:07sometimes hard to tell, whether hooker is truly reading on the
- 55:12Jet Sweep or whether it's a we're giving we're giving it
- 55:15regardless. But there were a couple times
- 55:18where if he was truly reading and not just carrying out of
- 55:23fake that he would have walked in for a touchdown that second
- 55:27one. He would have.
- 55:28Yeah, nobody on the right side of that field, they all float.
- 55:32If he pulls it, he walks and it's an extra four points.
- 55:36So again, I can't speak to whether that's a design or
- 55:39whether that was just a bad read, but if it was designed, I
- 55:47would prefer pretty much. Unless it's like a short yardage
- 55:52like a like a third one, where we just want the ball in,
- 55:57Herbert's hands. Yeah, I want everything to be a
- 56:01read. I want, I want hooker to have
- 56:04the option to pull it and go and he.
- 56:10Yeah. So like I said, I don't know if
- 56:12that's the case. I'm putting my feelings out
- 56:16there, situation so well, To one other thing and my opened.
- 56:23For those who ask about the analogy I made from about Brad
- 56:28cornelison. We don't understand it.
- 56:30Please message the B C or D and the BC, or message me directly
- 56:36on its, on our, it's on our page.
- 56:37And yeah, well, what I mean? But Ron, I messaged you earlier
- 56:44in about three, four months ago, they showed the Rose Bowl PC.
- 56:50Versus Wisconsin. And if you don't recall when
- 56:54that game was on, I legitimately sent you every single freaking
- 56:57play. That was called because that was
- 56:58full and thick, all in the place and mean kind of share with
- 57:03other people. And everybody's like, it's
- 57:06brilliant. There's times where he's going
- 57:08back to the same thing, same thing.
- 57:10And then he sees a slight adjustment and he goes something
- 57:13completely that it exposes where they adjusted.
- 57:16Yep. It looks like it looks like
- 57:20something that was planned, you know, who you thought?
- 57:25It's like, I think we're, I'm saying I'm losing the confidence
- 57:28in him. Is you got this guy knows how to
- 57:30create a good game plan, you know, you know how to call good
- 57:33place. That is why you be, that's why
- 57:35you got hired to be a head. Coach.
- 57:37What you did at TCU is why you got hired at Memphis.
- 57:43I believe he's a good head coach but I believe he's also known
- 57:46this guy for the last 17 years of his life and I believe he's
- 57:52hate to say this. It's there a few times and I
- 57:56want with the same program where there's one thing preventing you
- 58:02from getting over the hump. And it's your loyalty.
- 58:07Yeah, if I'm just in for Wednesday, warrants a design,
- 58:13the game plan on calling the next week.
- 58:16Because I need to see it work. You're doing is what I'm doing
- 58:20and if it's, if I go out there next week and I put 63 points on
- 58:23the board that I've already. I've already answered it.
- 58:26Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to piggyback off your your analogy
- 58:30there. All right, we're gonna go old
- 58:32school here guys. So when I say The Fast and
- 58:35Furious, I'm not talking about the 2009 movie.
- 58:39I'm talking about the original 2001 movie.
- 58:43I fondly, yay! As did I Together, possibly 20
- 58:49years ago, quite possibly man. Okay, so remember Jesse kind of
- 58:56the guy that would set up a lot of the the NOS systems in the in
- 59:01the cars but he took his car to the the track and he couldn't do
- 59:07it. You don't want Jesse behind the
- 59:09car you want? Dom Toretto.
- 59:13Yes, Brad corny open is Jessie except we don't have anyone to
- 59:19kill him. That is the complete joke.
- 59:24I've seen this all the friggin bleep joke, don't worry, buddy
- 59:29going to kill all the Jews of corner because I think he can
- 59:31design damn good plays. I think that should be this job.
- 59:39So I mean, I think I'm going to edit this out now, we're really
- 59:43going to keep it in, man, we're going to keep that in.
- 59:47There are some guys we can do that.
- 59:49I'm a 49ers fan run and actually, your coats are a good
- 59:53way to put this to with, um, Frank Wright.
- 59:58Those guys know how to designing call?
- 1:00:00Yeah, they do. They also know how to be.
- 1:00:04Well, Kyle made a few screw-ups here and there, but overall, All
- 1:00:08he's been a big boat. Been good head coaches.
- 1:00:12It's just not in his DNA to call, he's not in his DNA like
- 1:00:16today. I feel like if Wednesday have
- 1:00:18been on that call after those first few outside edge runs, I
- 1:00:22think he would have ran re-up on inside Zone and then just said,
- 1:00:26you want to play that hard Edge. You can go on it.
- 1:00:28I'm going to keep going right here.
- 1:00:30I think after the first few times, when we took a shot, I
- 1:00:33think you said, okay, I'm gonna start peppering you again.
- 1:00:36I go back to the game that Rose Bowl game and all that.
- 1:00:41Yeah, follow page and gears. You saw him in waiting for us,
- 1:00:47we Pine for it because In menu. Close to being out 25-year fans.
- 1:00:57We've never had a play caller. The just yeah we've had great
- 1:01:06players. We have now we've had great
- 1:01:12players. We've had great systems but we
- 1:01:14haven't had a great play. Caller at any point that I can
- 1:01:17recall, not Ricky bustle had the system.
- 1:01:21They had with Mike Vick was just perfect.
- 1:01:23Also wouldn't a great play call or he had an ungodly town.
- 1:01:27I'm sad because I see this system.
- 1:01:30And I think this system, 10 years ago, 15 years ago with
- 1:01:34some of the dynamic play. This system would have murder
- 1:01:37people. Even evil.
- 1:01:39According to Nielsen calling plays, this is the would have
- 1:01:43murdered people in the car odd years.
- 1:01:46I mean like, like, like I'm on my thinking, average is probably
- 1:01:5243, 44 points, a game without blinking.
- 1:01:57It could have worked with him. It could have worked in 2004
- 1:02:00with your. Yeah I mean there's definitely
- 1:02:05could have been a so system. This is what we make it a poll
- 1:02:11question. Does Hokie Nation won't get what
- 1:02:14they call plays? I think we could probably put
- 1:02:19that out there. I'm going to ask you another
- 1:02:21question while we're, since we're kind of venting.
- 1:02:24I mean this is probably more of a big picture than it is a right
- 1:02:29now question. But you know, do is there
- 1:02:32anything other than potentially changing the play?
- 1:02:34Call duties that we need to look at To get through the rest of
- 1:02:38the season. No, I don't think so.
- 1:02:43I mean, you know defensively you got a whole new staff.
- 1:02:48They're trying to implement some different things.
- 1:02:50They didn't get spring Thee. I can't look.
- 1:03:12Yeah, I agree. I guess the question is that Has
- 1:03:18this staff as a whole? Did they Peak year one?
- 1:03:21Or are we going to see them? Get back to the consistency that
- 1:03:25we saw in that first year? Because even even at its worst
- 1:03:31Syracuse. Yeah.
- 1:03:35That's season. Felt different like that.
- 1:03:39Other than I think the only other game that had me sweat,
- 1:03:42and towards the end that year was other than the Clemson
- 1:03:46matchup was, Was the Duke game which I was at that year and
- 1:03:50then we just close the door late.
- 1:03:52So, I don't think I'm quite there with this unit yet, just
- 1:03:59because of what I saw today. I thought we were past the
- 1:04:04things where we push through the adversity and end up closing out
- 1:04:09games the way we should. Because even in the UNC game I
- 1:04:14felt like we push through adversity and close pretty well,
- 1:04:17especially on the offensive side of the football.
- 1:04:20And, you know, this was a big step back for me and you know
- 1:04:25I'm not Not, I'm not I'm not knee jerking or you know, one
- 1:04:30game I'm pivoting from best offense.
- 1:04:33We've had in a while to, you know, we got to completely gut
- 1:04:39this thing. But at the same time, what
- 1:04:43happened? Today, shouldn't happen.
- 1:04:44And that's got to start and end with the with the coaching staff
- 1:04:48and with the head coach. So we got it.
- 1:04:49We got to hold that accountable and and try to make some changes
- 1:04:52and I know, you know, Fuente took responsibility for this.
- 1:04:55One at the podium. But, you know, we still, we it's
- 1:05:00one thing to take responsibility.
- 1:05:01Another thing to, you know, let's turn it around.
- 1:05:03And, you know, we got Louisville coming in at 78 going down
- 1:05:08there. So cannot get us a some round
- 1:05:10about what you said though. Yeah, when he was tired and he
- 1:05:14came in here, he didn't essentially everything.
- 1:05:18I mean, yes, he hired. But Foster's that staff.
- 1:05:23Yeah. But his fans knew how long can
- 1:05:29but do it. How long does bud want to do it?
- 1:05:31Obviously, but had heart issues. So you won coach was just what
- 1:05:39they had Coke bread corn. Nielsen offensive coordinator
- 1:05:43quarterback, coach Zone, burden running backs coach Holloman
- 1:05:46Wiggins wide receiver coach Shabbos, tight ends.
- 1:05:50Vice offensive line right? Yep other Style.
- 1:05:55The ball was Bud. Charlie Tigre for a while.
- 1:06:00Be mixed for a while. Kalin Scott.
- 1:06:06Who's left on the staff as of right now?
- 1:06:09Nobody defensive side is nobody in.
- 1:06:18I would say running back. Something better like a bird
- 1:06:23takes over running backs. Looking better.
- 1:06:25I'm wrong about my hair. OK, Google search.
- 1:07:08One of the offensive line coach the offensive coordinator and if
- 1:07:12we're talking about what's happening this season it's
- 1:07:16pretty easy to. I think the spot the weakest
- 1:07:18link of those three. There you go.
- 1:07:22And even of the interview if you can separate and say these are
- 1:07:25the new coaches, we cannot grade them.
- 1:07:27Not this year. It'll probably be the end of
- 1:07:29next year before we grade them. We great on.
- 1:07:32Who's here? God?
- 1:07:34That's good were good. Special teams coach to the fake
- 1:07:37punt. Brilliant.
- 1:07:38Today you have an athletic guy back there.
- 1:07:40You take the risk. Brilliant call.
- 1:07:42If so, it consistently goes back to the weakest link.
- 1:07:49And I think anybody takes some people felt like Ben's face was
- 1:07:52the weakest link. Well, he's proven that wrong
- 1:07:55this year, we still ran for over 200 today.
- 1:07:57Yep, we gave up two sacks, all right?
- 1:08:03If that's your worst game than most people, most teams will
- 1:08:06take that damn lie. So that we went, we went spells
- 1:08:13in the bearing, the latter days of the Beamer era in the early.
- 1:08:18Days of the Flint area where we didn't go.
- 1:08:22We go stretches of not getting 200 rushing yards in the game.
- 1:08:25So the fact that we're still getting that on a bad day, way
- 1:08:28that tells you the steps we've taken this year, Matt taken and
- 1:08:35you had to bury the guy but it's like after you had Jerrod the
- 1:08:39first year, you had NFL wide receiver and Bucky you had cam.
- 1:08:44You had You had has a afford what happens when you've been
- 1:08:51drinking and then you lose a game but you had and you had
- 1:08:55Gerard you had an okay offensive line, not great.
- 1:08:58Not this greater I'd love to see that line with that team.
- 1:09:02This line with that team but you didn't have the good a running
- 1:09:07back like we do now. But what I've seen is even with
- 1:09:12that. We weren't a leak.
- 1:09:16We were good. Above average but not great
- 1:09:21Elite. So it's like
- 1:10:14I feel like oftentimes those calls don't put the players.
- 1:10:18Place to have success. Nope, the two calls inside the
- 1:10:22Tent today are the ones I pointed, because if you just sit
- 1:10:25there and say, yep, you've had some success with Blackshear on
- 1:10:29the jet sweeps but you've also had spacing guys spaced out
- 1:10:31there. Bunch now I'm sitting here in
- 1:10:34just the first one that happened.
- 1:10:36I just said to him said to myself just just run the ball.
- 1:10:39Just run the ball with Herbert and some ways on get positive
- 1:10:42yards. It closer so jump balls are in
- 1:10:46effect or You know, Zone read quarterback counters,
- 1:10:51quarterback sweets, all on the table, you ran it.
- 1:10:56Goes back to the Kentucky game with a freaking back, sweep
- 1:11:00short side. When we needed a good.
- 1:11:05Yep, it was the worst at the work.
- 1:11:09I think me. And you discussed afterwards.
- 1:11:13That was that was the change of the game.
- 1:11:16You do you call any other play in that game?
- 1:11:19You probably becomes Ball but we didn't worst play at the worst
- 1:11:25time that set us apart of the game here.
- 1:11:33It was the field goal. We missed the 53 order, the way
- 1:11:38out there. Yeah the one where if it was me
- 1:11:42on Third down, instead of dropping handing back into a
- 1:11:46five-step drop. I'm handing the ball off to my
- 1:11:50running back and letting us either have a chain of choice to
- 1:11:56go for it on fourth or kick a field goal, but instead of
- 1:12:00getting a potential at least probably two or three yard gain
- 1:12:02on that play, you drop yourself six yards back and take a, make
- 1:12:07a 47-yard field goal, a 53-yard field goal.
- 1:12:11I mean, and yeah, Yeah, and I mean, so that's execution. 2
- 1:12:15news has got to do better Block in the defensive end on that
- 1:12:17play as well, but run the ball. If you get 78 yards, you get a
- 1:12:22choice to either. Go for it on fourth or kick the
- 1:12:24field goal, and worse case scenario, you make that field
- 1:12:27goal. Shorter will stand for, it's not
- 1:12:31even where it's third and six or seven.
- 1:12:33It was Stern for on that play. Yeah.
- 1:12:36Before it would have been a 40-second Warner.
- 1:12:39It's three and you still don't feel comfortable going for it
- 1:12:41leads to 44. 45 yarder where you feel where you know holy crap,
- 1:12:47Tampa Bay just walked off. We had a to Two World Series,
- 1:12:51all right? But back to this so he would
- 1:13:05have had it would have been Get the ball out, the space
- 1:13:33underneath the coverage. You know what?
- 1:13:36I'll go back even further when we were struggling to move the
- 1:13:39ball, that one play where we motion Mitchell out and then got
- 1:13:42him out in space. It ended up not being a great
- 1:13:45big game because he almost misread the block, but it was a
- 1:13:48great design and it got the job done which was get us.
- 1:13:51I think we needed three yards on that play.
- 1:13:53Wind up, getting like six or seven.
- 1:13:55Yeah, like I love that play call like something like that.
- 1:13:59Where we're getting the ball out of hookers hands fast.
- 1:14:03I mean even what was the other Play where we ran.
- 1:14:09Who was it? I think was TV on.
- 1:14:10We ran him right? Like, underneath the coverage.
- 1:14:13All the way across the formation.
- 1:14:17Yes. Oh yeah, we reran the dragged
- 1:14:19across the formation and he had room to make a guy missing.
- 1:14:21The almost got the first down the end up like three yard
- 1:14:23short, like something like that on, on that play would have been
- 1:14:27way better than what we ended up going with.
- 1:14:29Like you're playing into their strengths too much.
- 1:14:34And I mean, I know at some point you're like, well, I'm going to
- 1:14:37call this play in the players, have to execute but But okay but
- 1:14:41that's that doesn't always work man.
- 1:14:43Again sometimes you need to put the players in a position to
- 1:14:47have success and not just well this is the play.
- 1:14:51You need to execute it. It's one of those weird things
- 1:14:55where it's almost like, like like through more stuff like
- 1:15:04that maybe on the football team or fraternities where it's like,
- 1:15:09We're going to give you an almost impossible mission.
- 1:15:13You might complete, but it's almost impossible to complete
- 1:15:18versus. That's what he's doing.
- 1:15:20Here's the impossible that you probably can complete it coach.
- 1:15:24Why don't we do that? That's really easy.
- 1:15:26And we're going to get eight yards.
- 1:15:28No, no, this is what you gonna do.
- 1:15:33Are you saying that for Nelson Lakes to Kobayashi Maru the
- 1:15:38often sometimes? Yes.
- 1:15:42But I have a question. You see the looks on the faces?
- 1:15:45You see the energy level of the guys?
- 1:15:47Yeah. You know, for real, like, do you
- 1:15:51feel like they're sitting here? Like, like all those guys going?
- 1:15:55Oh man. This is when we can run like
- 1:15:58tendons are waiting for the play called man.
- 1:16:00This would be a good time for QB.
- 1:16:01Counter wouldn't be great at Sweet short side.
- 1:16:05What what are we? What are we Maybe when we get
- 1:16:10into it, maybe there's set up, something weird and you want to
- 1:16:13bail out of it. All right, we look to the side
- 1:16:16lat. Okay, we're not bailing out of
- 1:16:19their check with me. He we're going with us.
- 1:16:23I did what I did. And if you think about it,
- 1:16:27eventually, the play calls become like that.
- 1:16:30Do they give some leverage? Just for one day, give leverage
- 1:16:33to him to say if you feel like it's a bad looking bad, play
- 1:16:35check out. Yeah.
- 1:16:38There's that. If you check out more than this,
- 1:17:15The stew for lunch and then have that for dinner.
- 1:17:17Oh man, did we ate late? And I ended up, I went all
- 1:17:23crazy. Staking State G note, sub-folder
- 1:17:27myself, beautiful fat kid, huh? Yeah then I got myself my
- 1:17:34sticks, we got salad, but their ranch dressing, some of the best
- 1:17:40ranch dressing never. So I just don't hold.
- 1:17:43Dude, I think dressing is always baller as well.
- 1:17:51I don't know. I think those places like that
- 1:17:53they make their home, they might like if it's store-bought it's
- 1:18:06somewhere that We didn't really have a run-down
- 1:18:35ladies and gentle. We just kind of said, this is
- 1:18:37what we want to talk about and kind of went so.
- 1:18:40If it's a little little off the normal beaten path, you know,
- 1:18:44let us know. But we just kind of felt with
- 1:18:46the way the game was played. Both sloppy and very beat
- 1:18:51yourself. We figured, we're just going to
- 1:18:54run this podcast, kind of the same way and just let y'all know
- 1:18:56how we feel and let it ride. So, that's what you got.
