- 0:51Speaker 1: before we do get started, I do want to let
- 0:53Speaker 1: you know that the program is brought to you by
- 0:56Speaker 1: the financial support of our listeners, and you can support

- 1:06Speaker 1: Patreon dot Great Detectives dot net. Well, now we embark
- 1:11Speaker 1: on the first of three different radio series featuring the
- 1:16Speaker 1: character of Michael Sheane. This is a character whose portrayal
- 1:20Speaker 1: varies radically from the books, to the movies, to the
- 1:25Speaker 1: radio series and the television Michael Shane made his first
- 1:29Speaker 1: appearance in print in nineteen thirty nine in Dividend on Death.
- 1:36Speaker 1: The book was written by Davis Dresser under the pseudonym Bradaladay.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Dresser had inspiration for Michael Sane when he was in
- 1:47Speaker 1: a bar in Mexico. In the bar, a fight broke
- 1:50Speaker 1: out a fearsome morale, people throwing punches and breaking things.
- 1:56Speaker 1: This guy, a red haired guy, just sat at his
- 1:59Speaker 1: table quietly drinking his cognac, and the fight carried on
- 2:05Speaker 1: for a little while, and then he got up and
- 2:07Speaker 1: just started knocking people out with one punch. And then
- 2:11Speaker 1: he stumbled into the guy in another bar, wanted to
- 2:14Speaker 1: talk with him, get to know him a bit, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: then two men came in and escorted the gentleman away,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and he had a very nervous look about him. And
- 2:24Speaker 1: that character that gentlemen really gave Davis Dresser some ideas,
- 2:30Speaker 1: so he created Michael Shane in this very hard boiled
- 2:34Speaker 1: mode and the books were popular, so Hollywood came calling. However,
- 2:39Speaker 1: what Hollywood often did with successful books is they would
- 2:43Speaker 1: take the detective's name, maybe a couple details, and they
- 2:47Speaker 1: would change whatever suited them in order to fit the
- 2:51Speaker 1: actor playing the role, in this case Lloyd Nolan, who
- 2:57Speaker 1: was just not that sort of character. And particularly this
- 3:01Speaker 1: was in the wake of the Thin Man movies and
- 3:04Speaker 1: other detective comedy stories. The movies had a much lighter
- 3:09Speaker 1: touch about them, and this first radio show really does
- 3:13Speaker 1: follow that general tendency, and there are other changes as well.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The Michael Shane books are set in Miami, that's his hometown. However,
- 3:24Speaker 1: a city that radio writers knew well and was the
- 3:27Speaker 1: subject of other popular detective series was San Francisco, and
- 3:32Speaker 1: so these stories are set in San Francisco. They starred
- 3:36Speaker 1: Wally Mayer, who some listeners may remember as Sergeant Grebb
- 3:41Speaker 1: from the Lineup, and those who have been with us
- 3:43Speaker 1: a bit longer will remember from Lieutenant Riley from Let
- 3:47Speaker 1: George Do It Well. We won't go into too much
- 3:49Speaker 1: more about our star since he's not actually in this episode. Yes,
- 3:53Speaker 1: the earliest episode we have of Michael Shane has Wally
- 3:58Speaker 1: Mayer in the hospital, Edmund McDonald playing the lead role.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So here from April nineteen forty five is the Newton
- 4:07Speaker 1: Murder Case.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Due to the illness of Wallymare, the part of Mike
- 4:11Speaker 2: Shane will be played tonight by Edmund McDonald In the
- 4:14Speaker 2: Adventures of Michael Shane Private Detector.
- 4:24Speaker 3: The people who.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Make seventy six Gasoline and Triton Motor Oil Union Oil
- 4:29Speaker 2: Company present The Adventures of Michael Shane Private Detective, starring
- 4:37Speaker 2: Wallymare and Kathy Lewins. It's the Brighton sunny San Francisco afternoon,
- 4:54Speaker 2: the sort of day you want to close up your office,
- 4:56Speaker 2: say to heck with work and go over the hill.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Right now, Ike, Shane and Phillips Knight and closed their
- 5:01Speaker 2: office and gone over the bay. But they can't say
- 5:04Speaker 2: the heck with work. In fact, work is calling them
- 5:07Speaker 2: to the Oakland Railroad terminal. As the end of the depot,
- 5:10Speaker 2: Phyllis looks at her wristwatch.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Twenty past three. Mike, do you realize that train is
- 5:16Speaker 4: five whole hours late?
- 5:17Speaker 5: I order? This makes our third trip across the vade.

- 15:02Speaker 4: It was a woman's voice, Missus Newton. She tried to
- 15:05Speaker 4: get the package before.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Maybe I talked to mister Tutoran on the lobby phone here.
- 15:10Speaker 5: He said he'd be down a minute.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Did he tell you what this hide and seek is
- 15:12Speaker 4: all about?
- 15:14Speaker 5: He was holding a conference's room. One of the men.
- 15:16Speaker 5: We saw him with him at the deepot got out

- 15:33Speaker 5: Yes, and so is Missus Newton. He just stepped out
- 15:35Speaker 5: of one.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Oh, let's not tangle with her again.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Amen, she's going through that arcade. All right, kids, let's
- 15:43Speaker 5: make an end run for it.
- 15:57Speaker 7: Here. It is Mike number nine eleven.
- 16:01Speaker 5: The key is on the outside of the door.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I will be so glad when we get rid of
- 16:05Speaker 4: this package. It's hext.
- 16:09Speaker 5: No answer suppose we might stick our heads inside.
- 16:12Speaker 7: Go ahead, I've got the authority.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Mister Newton. Uh, mister Newton, it's Mike Shane.
- 16:21Speaker 4: He must have gone downstairs.
- 16:23Speaker 7: Hey, what's that noise?
- 16:24Speaker 5: Come on, let's find out. I don't see anybody or
- 16:29Speaker 5: the sofa, Mike, Is that easy? Here's this question. Don't
- 16:36Speaker 5: you think pillow over his face or it used to
- 16:38Speaker 5: be a pillow. It's blown inside out.
- 16:40Speaker 7: He stuck the gun into the pillar and used it
- 16:42Speaker 7: as a silencer. Is that your man Newton.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Must be Yeah, yeah, I can still recognize him.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Yeah, but this man's dead and we heard sounds.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Here.
- 16:55Speaker 4: He is tied up with bed sheets and gags.
- 16:58Speaker 7: Slugged a couple of times. Yeah, give me a hand, Mike.
- 17:01Speaker 5: You bet Hey, Hey, I know him. This is one
- 17:06Speaker 5: of the guys who came out of the depot with Newton.
- 17:08Speaker 7: Yeah, he's not tired, very tight. Let's get that gag
- 17:11Speaker 7: out of his mind. Oh, thank heavens, I was choking you.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Stand up.
- 17:19Speaker 12: I think so o dizzy?
- 17:23Speaker 5: Hit me so hard?
- 17:24Speaker 12: Who are you Carr Stanton, Frank's business partner.
- 17:28Speaker 5: You were missus Stanton, and he.
- 17:33Speaker 7: Did it very thoroughly. You know who did it.
- 17:37Speaker 12: There were two of them, man and a woman. She
- 17:40Speaker 12: called him George.
- 17:40Speaker 4: That's it, Mike. The other two who were with Newton
- 17:42Speaker 4: at the depot, yes.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Frank to meet him there.
- 17:46Speaker 12: They were with him, had guns and said they'd kill
- 17:49Speaker 12: us if we called for help.
- 17:50Speaker 5: That explains why Newton gave us the brush off of
- 17:52Speaker 5: the station.
- 17:52Speaker 12: We didn't dare make a sign. They forced Frank to
- 17:56Speaker 12: come to the hotel and get this room. They made
- 17:58Speaker 12: him pant a detective. I guess it was you, sir,
- 18:01Speaker 12: bring the necklace here.
- 18:02Speaker 4: You mean that there's jewelry inside his package.
- 18:05Speaker 12: A diamond necklace, of course. Frank forty two thousand dollars.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Ooh, and he sent it to me because he knew
- 18:11Speaker 5: these tools after it.
- 18:12Speaker 7: Oh, confounded. They've caught the phone wires. I have to
- 18:15Speaker 7: go downstairs to call head.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Just a minute, Faraday. Let's get a description of the
- 18:18Speaker 5: tool so you can broadcast the line.
- 18:19Speaker 7: Don't worry, I Intendo, now look, give us the whole
- 18:22Speaker 7: story while you're about it, mister Stanton.
- 18:23Speaker 12: Well, Frank bought the necklace in Chicago for his wife.
- 18:27Speaker 12: These people got on the train there, he said, it
- 18:29Speaker 12: became so friendly, got suspicious. He sneaked off the train
- 18:32Speaker 12: at Reno and shipped the necklace to mister Shane.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Well, somehow they must have figured out the trick.
- 18:36Speaker 12: They found the air Express receipt in Frank's wallet, so
- 18:39Speaker 12: they made him come to the hotel and then phoned
- 18:41Speaker 12: the detective. The redheaded girl said she was going downstairs
- 18:44Speaker 12: to the drug store, but she didn't come back, and
- 18:47Speaker 12: the other one got awfully excited. He said she was
- 18:49Speaker 12: double crossing him.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Well, she made that phony call, she went to our building,
- 18:53Speaker 4: watched for the express truck and then tricked his Huh.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Probably go on, Missus Stanton.
- 18:57Speaker 12: Well, this fellow lost his head, said he blow our
- 19:00Speaker 12: brains out if we didn't give him money. We were
- 19:02Speaker 12: to call a messenger here to the room with all
- 19:04Speaker 12: our company cash. I tried to sneak the gun away
- 19:07Speaker 12: from him. Well that's the last I knew.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Uh huh. He slugged you, tied you up, then killed Newton.
- 19:13Speaker 7: He really went haywire.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I'll get it.
- 19:15Speaker 12: I'll answer, is missus Newton in?
- 19:19Speaker 9: Well, come on in, Well, lie, I didn't expect to
- 19:23Speaker 9: find so many, good.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Lord Frank, Yeah, murdered a couple of jewel peeves.
- 19:29Speaker 9: What a jew want why I I was to meet
- 19:32Speaker 9: Missus Newton here? What for I I'm her attorney? What on, Wilson,
- 19:38Speaker 9: We're going to discuss Edna's divorce and property settlement with
- 19:42Speaker 9: him looking out for interests very carefully, aren't you, Wilson.
- 19:45Speaker 9: Somebody has to the way you're milking the company.
- 19:48Speaker 8: That's a lie.
- 19:49Speaker 7: If anybody was milking it.
- 19:50Speaker 12: It was Frank forty two thousand dollars for a string
- 19:53Speaker 12: of dimes.
- 19:54Speaker 5: You mean the company bought the necklace.
- 19:56Speaker 7: It did.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Frank phoned me from Chicago for the money.
- 19:59Speaker 7: I told him it going on cash we had in
- 20:01Speaker 7: the bank. Yes, a minute, mister Wilson, since the first
- 20:04Speaker 7: time you've been to this room. Certainly we found a
- 20:07Speaker 7: key on the outside of the door. Why anybody could
- 20:10Speaker 7: unlock it and come in?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Right?
- 20:12Speaker 5: What about Missus Newton? We saw her come out of
- 20:14Speaker 5: the elevator.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Yeah, but Mike, mister Stanton didn't mention her. Of course
- 20:17Speaker 4: he was unconscious.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Wouldn't know, Phil, You looked up Newton's house phone. You
- 20:21Speaker 5: remember the street number?
- 20:22Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Yeah, let's get going. I want to swap one time
- 20:24Speaker 5: a necklace for one piece of information.
- 20:26Speaker 7: And a cop up to the room. Will you, Mike,
- 20:27Speaker 7: I'm going down a headquarters and broadcast to pick up
- 20:29Speaker 7: for the Chicago Bank.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Okay, but don't talk the newspapers, Yeadow, You'll be sorry.
- 20:45Speaker 6: What do you wish to see me about? Mister Shane?
- 20:48Speaker 5: The Air Express packers just came, Missus Newton. Will he
- 20:51Speaker 5: understand it's for you?
- 20:52Speaker 6: I have it?
- 20:52Speaker 5: Please?
- 20:53Speaker 4: Certainly? Here you are, thank you? Your your eyes are red,
- 20:57Speaker 4: Missus Newton. Is there something wrong?
- 21:00Speaker 5: Why?
- 21:01Speaker 6: No, I'm just upset. I'm getting a divorce.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Warren Wilson is your attorney.
- 21:06Speaker 6: I believe, Oh, I suppose Frank has set you on
- 21:09Speaker 6: his trail.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Gentlemen, seems very interested in protecting your financial interests.
- 21:13Speaker 6: I don't believe that concerns you.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Excuse me by the way I saw you in the
- 21:17Speaker 5: lobby of the Fairfax Hotel a while ago. Did you
- 21:21Speaker 5: talk over the divorce with your husband?
- 21:23Speaker 7: Yes?
- 21:25Speaker 5: How did you take it?
- 21:26Speaker 6: Mister Shane? If you came here to pry into my
- 21:28Speaker 6: private effect, I.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Came here, Missus Newton, tell you that your husband is dead.
- 21:35Speaker 4: He's dead?
- 21:37Speaker 5: Who did it? I didn't say he was murdered?
- 21:40Speaker 6: Oh no, no, of course not. I just assumed from
- 21:43Speaker 6: the way you spoke.
- 21:44Speaker 5: As a matter of fact, he was shot at.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Yes, they're looking for the killers right now. Two jewel
- 21:50Speaker 4: thieves followed mister Newton from Chicago.
- 21:53Speaker 6: Well then it was for this. This it's my anniversary present.
- 21:57Speaker 4: That's a pretty costly one from a man who was
- 22:00Speaker 4: going to leave you.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Well, if i'd only known. We were in Chicago and
- 22:03Speaker 6: I told Frank I want some diamonds for our fifteenth anniversary.
- 22:07Speaker 6: He said no, I came home without him.
- 22:12Speaker 5: This attorney, Warren Wilson, he wanted you to get a divorce,
- 22:16Speaker 5: didn't he?
- 22:16Speaker 6: He said it was my only protection that Frank and
- 22:19Speaker 6: Carl Stanton were robbing the company, and Warren was worried
- 22:23Speaker 6: about my property.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Which of course he would be glad to protect if
- 22:26Speaker 5: he married you.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Oh never, I told him so. I respect him as
- 22:31Speaker 6: an attorney, but as a man a husband.
- 22:34Speaker 5: No, he's probably heard that women change their minds. That
- 22:38Speaker 5: would pay off, even as executive of your husband's estate.
- 22:41Speaker 6: You mean Warren might have Oh no, he couldn't be
- 22:45Speaker 6: smart enough to use a pillow, Mike.
- 22:49Speaker 5: No, I guess he wouldn't missus Newton. In fact, it's
- 22:54Speaker 5: pretty ingenious for a woman I.
- 22:56Speaker 6: Didn't do it. I swear I didn't. I opened the door.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Frank was a conch. I just turned and run. I
- 23:03Speaker 6: didn't know what to do. I was afraid to do anybody.
- 23:06Speaker 6: What would the police say?
- 23:07Speaker 5: That's easy to find out. Missus Newton. Put on your
- 23:11Speaker 5: hat and coat and we'll go down to headquarters.
- 23:26Speaker 13: Age twenty six, twenty eight, five ft three, Wait one
- 23:31Speaker 13: o five red hair, bottle field turn repeating pick up
- 23:35Speaker 13: man and woman George Hyland alias Slip Doyle, age thirty

- 23:46Speaker 10: alias Clara Bloomberg, age twenty six twenty eight, five five

- 23:55Speaker 11: They are killers.
- 23:56Speaker 7: They are killers?
- 23:58Speaker 4: Wow, Faraday, a real description of the two.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Stanton must have identified them from police photographs.
- 24:04Speaker 6: Well then, what's the sense of dragging me in? They're
- 24:06Speaker 6: the ones that they killed Frank?
- 24:08Speaker 5: Now did they Missus Newton? I wouldn't be known, Mike
- 24:12Speaker 5: that coupe behind us.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I saw a park across the street when we rang
- 24:15Speaker 4: Missus Newton's doorbell. Sure that I'm positive?
- 24:18Speaker 5: Okay, I'll turn out this car and see what happens.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's still behind us. Mike, weren't so dark, I
- 24:28Speaker 4: could see who's driving. Wait a minute, the street lamp.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Then yeah, I caught it in the rear vision. It's
- 24:34Speaker 5: Paddle Georgie alias slipped Ja the Killer.
- 24:37Speaker 4: He's alone. He's alone in the car.
- 24:39Speaker 6: Oh oh, he's after my neck is after.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Me, he's after all three of us. Mike head for
- 24:43Speaker 4: a police stations.
- 24:44Speaker 5: Heve on Nex and lews Uh. We're heading for the
- 24:46Speaker 5: office of Shane Detectivations.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Mike, you're playing crazy, Aley.
- 24:49Speaker 5: We'll decide that after the trap is set.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Oh fine, if we're still alive to decide.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Anything, we'll return to mic and Phyllis in just a moment.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, the entire weight of your automobile rides
- 25:17Speaker 2: directly on the wheel bearings. Now, wheel bearings are round,
- 25:21Speaker 2: must revolve rapidly and yet support the heavy weight of
- 25:24Speaker 2: the car. Because of this concentrated pressure, and because they
- 25:28Speaker 2: are also liable to damage from break, dust, griff, and water,
- 25:32Speaker 2: the front wheel bearings need the best possible lubrication. Failure
- 25:36Speaker 2: to keep these bearings properly lubricated may result in expensive repairs,
- 25:40Speaker 2: requiring parts now hard to get your neighborhood. Union Oil
- 25:44Speaker 2: minuteman knows this. That's why he takes such pains to
- 25:47Speaker 2: do a thorough job of lubricating the front wheel bearings.
- 25:51Speaker 2: First he washes out all the old grease and dirt
- 25:54Speaker 2: with solvents. Then the bearings and races are individually cleaned
- 25:58Speaker 2: until they are dry and shining. Finally, the clean, polished
- 26:02Speaker 2: bearings are replaced in the races and greased with special
- 26:06Speaker 2: equipment to make certain that every surface is snugly sealed
- 26:10Speaker 2: in a thick coating of Union Oil wheel bearing grease.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Then your front wheels are all set for months of
- 26:16Speaker 2: well lubricated easy rolling. The cost for the entire service
- 26:20Speaker 2: of your front wheel bearing assembly is nominal, So for safer,
- 26:24Speaker 2: easier driving, just stop in wherever you see the sign
- 26:27Speaker 2: of the big orange and blue seventy six and take
- 26:31Speaker 2: advantage of Union Oil's front wheel bearing service.
- 26:35Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Mike thinks he has a plan to capture the murderer
- 26:44Speaker 2: who is trailing it with Phyllis and Missus Newton.
- 26:47Speaker 9: He is just entering his office Johnsville.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Here, Mike, this room, it's been ransacked.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Sure, said do us with her gelfriend fake phone coy
- 27:00Speaker 5: you got. Remember, well, you.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Be here any second, mister Shane. By the next.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Elevator, will he be into your office. Do exactly as
- 27:05Speaker 5: I told you.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Okay, all right, but this better.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Work good and lock your door from the other side.
- 27:11Speaker 6: Mister Shane, the man's desperate. He'll kill us.
- 27:13Speaker 5: I know, I don't think so, he says. I'm a mom.
- 27:17Speaker 6: I'm not so with my husband.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Good evening. You will always at it with your hat
- 27:34Speaker 5: on and the gun on your hand.
- 27:36Speaker 8: I saw three of you get out of the car.
- 27:38Speaker 5: Where's the girl, phil Oh if she went down the hall,
- 27:42Speaker 5: little she went down the hall. Maybe she's in the
- 27:46Speaker 5: next room. You had the necklace.
- 27:55Speaker 6: I haven't got it, really, I haven't, mister Shane.
- 28:00Speaker 5: All right, Shane, Sorry, I'm fresh out of diamonds too.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Wasting your time, pal, No diamonds in that desk, Your
- 28:11Speaker 5: redheaded Valentine gave this place to frisk hours ago.
- 28:14Speaker 11: A dile crosser. You've got the necklace here somewhere. I
- 28:19Speaker 11: saw you go into that house with the package and
- 28:21Speaker 11: come out again with it.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Crampba what big eyes shook.
- 28:25Speaker 11: I'll give you ten seconds. I'd hate to spoil your
- 28:29Speaker 11: nice carpet. With a lot of blood.
- 28:32Speaker 5: I can have the carpet, queen, and I'll have to
- 28:35Speaker 5: unless you hand me your gun right now.
- 28:38Speaker 8: What are you giving me.
- 28:39Speaker 5: You've got a good pair of eyes, chump, but you
- 28:41Speaker 5: don't raise them high enough. Next time you test a
- 28:43Speaker 5: locked door, look up at the transom. Huh, it's open
- 28:47Speaker 5: and our guns sticking right through it, and it's.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Aimed right at your heart.
- 28:51Speaker 7: Mister, your kids. I just talked with ballistics. What do
- 29:05Speaker 7: they say, slip Doyle's gun hasn't been fired for some time.
- 29:08Speaker 8: What did I tell you? I didn't do it.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Well, maybe he used the girl's gun.
- 29:11Speaker 7: I have to wait on that. They just picked her
- 29:12Speaker 7: up over in Oakrien.
- 29:13Speaker 5: He might have used another gun. We know he threatened
- 29:16Speaker 5: to kill Newton.
- 29:17Speaker 8: I was just bluffing. He and that other guy knew it.
- 29:20Speaker 8: He said I'd be scared of the noise.
- 29:21Speaker 11: I told him there wouldn't be any he'd stop a
- 29:23Speaker 11: pillow in his face and shove the gun into it.
- 29:25Speaker 8: But I didn't kill it.
- 29:25Speaker 7: No, you just got bored with the whole thing. You
- 29:28Speaker 7: walked out, leaving two guys that turn in the alarm.
- 29:30Speaker 8: Oh, I locked them in.
- 29:31Speaker 5: That's the catch. The Kate was in the outside of
- 29:34Speaker 5: the door. Anybody could walk in and do the Joe.
- 29:35Speaker 7: Okay, then I'd pick Newton's wife.
- 29:37Speaker 5: She's in the next room with stating at that attorney, isn't.
- 29:39Speaker 7: She Yeah, let's have a talk with him, and you're
- 29:41Speaker 7: coming to slip.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Well, all cleared up? Can we go now?
- 29:47Speaker 7: Not yet? We're not dead. Sure this is the killer?
- 29:49Speaker 6: What but you all said it was.
- 29:51Speaker 5: You might have that on him. Missus Newton. You tried
- 29:54Speaker 5: to cover up the fact that you were in that
- 29:55Speaker 5: hotel room, but I.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Explained that maybe you sure had blood in your eye
- 29:59Speaker 4: when our officer this afternoon.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Preposterous.
- 30:02Speaker 5: It's this jewel thief, undoubtedly.
- 30:04Speaker 7: Perhaps an attorney who tried to get Missus Newton away
- 30:06Speaker 7: from her husband.
- 30:07Speaker 5: I was protecting her from Frank and Carl. It was
- 30:10Speaker 5: stripping the business.
- 30:11Speaker 12: How very noble of you, mister Woodson.
- 30:12Speaker 7: However, I agree it must have been this thief to
- 30:15Speaker 7: frame No, wait a minute, nobody's trying to frame you.
- 30:18Speaker 7: You said your threaten to kill Newton. Now he's dead.
- 30:21Speaker 7: He said you were going to fire your gun through
- 30:22Speaker 7: that pillar. That's how we found it. The exact way.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Say that again, Faraday. Huh, never mind, have we been slow?
- 30:29Speaker 5: Remember when you and Phil found me in the lobby,
- 30:31Speaker 5: I said, I saw the Chicago guy going out of
- 30:32Speaker 5: the lobby. Yeah, sure, that was before I talked to
- 30:34Speaker 5: Frank Newton the ESK phone.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Well then, then Newton was still alive when slip Doyle
- 30:39Speaker 4: left the hotel.
- 30:39Speaker 8: I told you so.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Slip Doyle made the threats. He told exactly how he
- 30:43Speaker 5: killed Newton, but he didn't follow through. It was one
- 30:45Speaker 5: other person, the only other one in the room to
- 30:47Speaker 5: hear the threaten to carry it out in detail. Carl
- 30:50Speaker 5: stant right like a cinch. The jewel thief was a
- 30:53Speaker 5: perfect fall guy.
- 30:54Speaker 7: Oh no, you're wrong.
- 30:55Speaker 5: I told you Carl was stealing from the company. The
- 30:58Speaker 5: Newton out of the way, he could lay all the
- 31:00Speaker 5: blame on his party. So the two crooks that are
- 31:03Speaker 5: falling out, that's why Stanton was tied up so sloppy.
- 31:06Speaker 7: He did it himself. Okay, I'll send a man to
- 31:08Speaker 7: the hotel to find his gun. That will since you since.
- 31:11Speaker 5: Right now, we've got the motive, We've got Doyle's testimony,
- 31:14Speaker 5: We've got our own.
- 31:14Speaker 8: Never convict me, I myself.
- 31:16Speaker 5: I don't think you will mister Stanton. They tell me
- 31:19Speaker 5: that suicide rate in the county jail is very low.
- 31:35Speaker 4: You you don't have to see me to my door, Mike,
- 31:38Speaker 4: I'm not afraid of the dark anymore.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Please Angel, allow me one little touch of Irish gallantry.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Oh all right, here we are, if I can just
- 31:49Speaker 4: find my keys.
- 31:50Speaker 5: Phil Faraday told me how busted up you were when
- 31:54Speaker 5: you thought I was injured. The best boss, the best
- 31:58Speaker 5: guy who ever lived.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Oh Faraday's an old gossip. You know better than to
- 32:04Speaker 4: believe his stories. Oh, jeeerse these keys are here somewhere.
- 32:09Speaker 5: If I had been injured, What would you have done?
- 32:12Speaker 4: Oh? I'd come down to the hospital and kiss you?
- 32:15Speaker 4: Make you?
- 32:16Speaker 3: Will you.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Kiss me?
- 32:20Speaker 4: Oh? Here are my keys? Well then, Mike, Oh what
- 32:25Speaker 4: what's the matter? What's wrong?
- 32:26Speaker 5: I've heard I just bit my lip?
