- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here and it's a
- 0:15Thursday, which means we are in the back half of the week and
- 0:19you're doing great. It is so good to have your
- 0:22company and we are definitely in the back half of the book of
- 0:26Joshua. We are mopping up the loose ends
- 0:29and today is a bit of an epic day.
- 0:32We have had Moses, who led his people out of Egypt, out of
- 0:37slavery, through the Promised land.
- 0:39And as Moses reached the end of his life, he hands the reins of
- 0:44control of God's people to Joshua.
- 0:48And today is the day that Joshua, having finished the work
- 0:51of getting these people to their new homes, settling them in,
- 0:57this is now the end of his life. And so it is the end of an era
- 1:02of this great patriarch of Israel who comes to the end of
- 1:05his time. So as we continue to read this
- 1:10story, we just ask, Holy Spirit, as we hear your words today, may
- 1:15they teach us more about you, who you are, and then who we are
- 1:22in you. All right, friends, let's do it.
- 1:26Let's read together Joshua chapter 23.
- 1:39The years passed and the Lord had given the people of Israel
- 1:42rest from all their enemies. Joshua, who was very old, now
- 1:48called together all the elders, leaders, judges and officers of
- 1:51Israel. He said to them, I am now a very
- 1:56old man. You have seen everything the
- 2:00Lord your God has done for you during my lifetime.
- 2:04The Lord your God has fought for you against your enemies.
- 2:09I have allotted to you as your homeland all the land of the
- 2:13nations yet unconquered, as well as the land of those we have
- 2:18already conquered. From the Jordan River to the
- 2:21Mediterranean Sea in the West. This land will be yours, for the
- 2:27Lord your God will himself drive out all the people living there
- 2:31now. You will take possession of
- 2:34their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.
- 2:39So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the
- 2:43Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning
- 2:48either to the left or to the right.
- 2:51Make sure you do not associate with the other people still
- 2:55remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of
- 2:59their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship
- 3:03them. Rather, cling tightly to the
- 3:07Lord your God, as you have done until now, for the Lord has
- 3:13driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has
- 3:18yet been able to defeat you. Each one of you will put to
- 3:22flight 1000 of the enemy, for the Lord your God fights for
- 3:27you, just as he has promised. So be very careful to love the
- 3:32Lord your God. But if you turn away from Him
- 3:37and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations
- 3:41remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them, then know
- 3:46for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive them
- 3:49out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare
- 3:53and a trap for you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles
- 3:58in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the
- 4:02Lord your God has given you. Soon I will die, going the way
- 4:08of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know
- 4:12that every promise of the Lord your God has come true.
- 4:16Not a single one has failed, but as surely as the Lord your God
- 4:21has given you the good things He promised, He will also bring
- 4:25disaster on you. If you disobey Him, He will
- 4:29completely destroy you from the good land He has given you.
- 4:34If you break the covenant of the Lord your God by worshipping and
- 4:38serving other gods, His anger will burn against you and you
- 4:43will quickly vanish from the good land He has given you.
- 4:57Well, Lord, you could not be more clear.
- 5:00Your blessing is abundant when we choose to live as your
- 5:04people. And we know your blessing and we
- 5:09know the incredible gifts that you have for us.
- 5:13And we know what you have lavished on us in your love and
- 5:17your forgiveness and your provision and of course, the
- 5:20gift of Jesus. But Lord, we also know that we
- 5:25are a broken people and just like the Israelites, as history
- 5:28would show us, continued to mess up and put other things before
- 5:32you. We are no better.
- 5:36But we know that we do not face destruction because we live
- 5:41under a new covenant, a new agreement where You have done
- 5:46all the work in saving us through Jesus.
- 5:51Thank you Lord, for making a deal that we could not possibly
- 5:54mess up because you have done everything.
- 5:57We just come to you with our arms open wide in gratitude to
- 6:02receive your love, membership in your family, joy beyond measure,
- 6:11and home with you forever. Ah, thank you for your goodness
- 6:15to us that never ends. We pray all of this in your
- 6:21wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
