- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my co-host.
- 0:51Brian Siegel I am Curtis Wilson. Brian it is after midnight
- 0:57Sunday morning. How you doing today?
- 1:01I am great. I'm having a lovely morning so
- 1:05far, me too. Sir celebration beer, please
- 1:10Keys, clinking. Oh my gosh, what an evening to
- 1:16watch some football? What a day to watch some
- 1:18football action all around good games, all around, nail-biters.
- 1:23Unbelievable performances. But Brian, let's just jump into
- 1:27it, man. Let's just jump.
- 1:29Right into the game. Brian.
- 1:31We start here before the game, even starts.
- 1:36We're following lightning Zola any better.
- 1:38They're talking who they're seeing they're seeing and a
- 1:40hooker. They're seeing a lot of starters
- 1:43about an hour. Before the game, any better
- 1:45tweets out that we have, 23 players that are not dressed for
- 1:51whatever reason or not. And of course, you know, we're
- 1:55looking through this. We see hinden, we'd heard rumors
- 1:58that he wouldn't go. To be there.
- 2:00It's not a shock for us. We see Keshawn king that's a
- 2:04little bit of a shot, little bit of a poo.
- 2:06Keshawn is a good change of pace, back hurts, not having,
- 2:10and we see Jermaine Waller, which have been discussed more,
- 2:14you know, the foot injury and I think people feel like you can
- 2:17have it in a cup, but of all the players, it wasn't.
- 2:21It was some guys who are probably going to contribute,
- 2:23but the two big names on this, we did not see coming.
- 2:28We got two coaches, not only Coke is not just coaches, I just
- 2:34coaches defensive coordinator, Justin, Hamilton and linebackers
- 2:39coach and former defensive coordinator Tracy claeys out for
- 2:43the game. So that's your probably number
- 2:46one, and number two, potential defensive play callers.
- 2:51Not ready for this game. Not not in attendance.
- 2:54So right away, I went Feeling pretty good when I saw the
- 3:00players that were out to feeling holy shit.
- 3:02This might be bad. Once I saw the coaches that were
- 3:04out. What about you, man?
- 3:06I was the same way. I was like, oh God, this isn't,
- 3:09this isn't good at all, you know, J, Hamm who as many people
- 3:13have talked about his mind and how he likes to draw up.
- 3:16Things is very respected and then Tracy who you feel if
- 3:20something happened to him, Tracy, be the guy, he designed
- 3:22the game playing calling please, and they're both out.
- 3:25And it's like, holy crap. Look at then it's like who's
- 3:27calling plays. Whoo.
- 3:28My kind of commonplace it's the guy who's eight years younger
- 3:33than me even and it some people kind of talking and
- 3:40chit-chatting you know things were involved with like one on a
- 3:43tear look Walnut on a tap you know they have all this
- 3:46experience abroad and you made the point.
- 3:47Watch Ryan Smith, probably not them.
- 3:50Yeah, so in terms of coverage and things like that that's
- 3:56that's going to be touched by a lot a lot.
- 3:58Hands on the defense you're talking about your linebackers
- 4:00going to be involved with boundary safety obviously your
- 4:04Corners. So a guy that really understands
- 4:07the coverage at a great level is going to be the guy that you're
- 4:11probably going to lean on in this instance.
- 4:13Despite the experience that a guy like to link has being a
- 4:18more veteran in terms of a coach at this point.
- 4:20So and I mean, as we will get to in a second, I think that that
- 4:26played in our favor a little bit It definitely a lot more than
- 4:30what we were. We were anticipating.
- 4:32I think you know the expectations were well above
- 4:35what. We were probably expecting.
- 4:37And I do mean you mentioned, you mentioned like having tier
- 4:40liquid. Probably the changes that are
- 4:41going to happen through the line throughout the rotations players
- 4:44who are going to be in and out things he wants to do.
- 4:46He's probably focused on that and then we take them Darryl
- 4:48Tapp, Got 5 of 12 years in the NFL so much experience.
- 4:52Hugh's, probably going to meet. I think probably you had tapped
- 4:55as the guy who probably was going to be poking through.
- 4:58The two linebackers. Luckily, we have a very
- 5:00experienced core linebackers with, you know, a chart Ashby
- 5:03Dax hollifield Tisdale and even ours because are displayed some
- 5:08probably more gimmick feel what those guys are seeing relaying
- 5:11the information. Because Darryl Tapp is that
- 5:13smart of a player where he probably could take the
- 5:16linebackers info, feed it into run Smith know if coach and
- 5:20Coach plays were on a FaceTime, call the NFL, but either way,
- 5:25it's not. But if we don't, we don't know
- 5:27to what degree Three. They were tapped into the
- 5:30sidelines but whatever they did, it it turned out pretty damn
- 5:36good, guys. It turns over what I mean,
- 5:39Hokies all over NC State 4524. It was not that close.
- 5:46Hey, Brian, should they have ever moved that line now?
- 5:51They should not have move that line that line was low levels
- 5:55low, they should have been raising that up.
- 5:57So We easily couple doing some have our predictions.
- 6:02You know I give you the victory because you did essentially get
- 6:07the bigger margin. Even those important Point.
- 6:10Hey I got closer to the amount of points.
- 6:12We actually scored though. There you go I almost hit what
- 6:16they support. I'm trying to get a win here.
- 6:18But yeah, The Impressions you know. 23 three starters who you
- 6:25guys you feel. We feel really good about it.
- 6:28I mean Brian, I mean, I'm gonna get some stats here in a second,
- 6:32but what's your overall impression?
- 6:33Just in general, if you guys really wanted to play some
- 6:37football? Damn, like they, they came out,
- 6:42like, they were shot out of a cannon that they were shot out
- 6:45of Skipper and adrenaline worn off.
- 6:49There was a little bit of a lull, but then settled in, we're
- 6:53consistent the rest of the way out.
- 6:57Definitely, let me just talk about top level.
- 7:00When I look at what the offensive game plan was coming
- 7:02into this thing, it was to run the ball down there.
- 7:04Damn throats. And that's what we did.
- 7:06It was man and I tell you what, 474 total yards, offensive yards
- 7:13over 500. Total from scrimmage.
- 7:16We had a couple good punt returns.
- 7:17Couple good kick returns 314 on the ground.
- 7:21Also carries 314 on 40 is 7.9 of carry.
- 7:27That's insane. Front will always talk about
- 7:31though, let's take out the big runs.
- 7:32I took out a big, the three biggest runs by each player, we
- 7:38still a divorced over five and a half, a carry large, one of the
- 7:43largest or D largest opening rushing total.
- 7:47Since 2000. We went for 335 there was this
- 7:50guy named Vic on that team. Got him slowed heard of him.
- 7:55I've heard of him to everybody. Yeah so yeah.
- 7:58Unbelievable 160 Listen didn't need much of.
- 8:01It came up big though Braxton Burmeister start 74. 16 1069 on
- 8:07the ground. Nine carries on the ground for
- 8:1046 yards. Obviously, we'll discuss later
- 8:13Braxton has the hand cramp. When she comes in relief for 46.
- 8:1775 yards, two touchdown passes, 10 447 on the ground at the
- 8:22touchdown there. One of our transfers, Khalil
- 8:26Herbert hundred fifty yards from scrimmage Bryant And a
- 8:30touchdown, your man Raheem Blackshear adds a touchdown as
- 8:34well on the ground even though there wasn't much for the
- 8:40receivers a couple guys still Feast it pretty good Big Stone
- 8:44Gap, three reception, 68 yards in a touch tadion Robinson 4440
- 8:49and a touch Trey. Turner only got one reception
- 8:52but still that 69 total yards including that big Jet Sweep so
- 8:59you know, we Good. They're not defensively behind
- 9:03me and you kind of about last hour before we started this up.
- 9:07Will you just kind of chatting looking to Stats?
- 9:09Like what we will talk about and I gave you this so we gave up
- 9:12336 and you're like solid number Braun and I said hey Brian 200
- 9:18of those 336 were on their garbage time.
- 9:21Touchdown drives they had three of them and you just kind of
- 9:23went six packs two interceptions.
- 9:30This team that had went significantly High last week on
- 9:34the rushing stats. You know, averaging what over
- 9:38six, a carry about five-and-a-half a carry 42, you
- 9:42carries 139 yards, 3.3 per carry the longest run.
- 9:47They had all those 14 yards, they weren't breaking anything.
- 9:50We were tackling, well, we'll get into that with some of the
- 9:53key plays throughout the game. Brian, if I told you who the
- 9:58leading tackler, was it be If you guess who the good?
- 10:01Lean tackle would be at the beginning.
- 10:02This game. Who Would You Against The
- 10:04probably said, Rook? Yeah.
- 10:06Me too. It was not real killers.
- 10:08Key on to Jenkins hate total, tackles Raschi, The Freshman
- 10:12going in there. Stepping up big just screed to
- 10:21Sag Manchild looking to sell. Tax set up a couple other you
- 10:31know sacks as well with some of the stuff he was doing.
- 10:36Yeah man you know Brian Murray with a pic Devon Diablo with the
- 10:41pick Marie. I almost tried to get another
- 10:44one so pretty crazy. So I just listened to those
- 10:47stats has that make you feel overall.
- 10:49Now as potentially, as we go as a team players are missing the
- 10:52players that are there. So I think the big thing you're
- 10:56down three key starters down, another handful of guys that
- 11:01were going to see significant snaps and with Belcher to of
- 11:06your your defensive coaches and we go out there and handle our
- 11:10business about the way we expected to handle our business
- 11:13before all of this shake-up. I feel pretty damn good.
- 11:18I feel pretty, damn good. I feel like this is the best
- 11:21possible outcome. I could have imagined from This
- 11:25game and that was, you know, not not take into account that we
- 11:30didn't have any defensive play caller, as of the start of the
- 11:34game. So I'm kind of Blown Away.
- 11:37I mean, my expectations, I think we're we're mid to low relative
- 11:44to probably where they would normally be in a game 1 against
- 11:49an opponent that I think were significantly better than.
- 11:52And, you know, they do Keys came.
- 11:54Outplayed, well and handled adversity.
- 11:57When it came and then took care of business.
- 12:00Absolutely, we did. Alright, we're going to get into
- 12:01a quick game Flow here through the corners things.
- 12:04We saw bronze going to lead this and the reason Brian was going
- 12:07to lead a prawn you played we played collegiately you go to
- 12:13the high school level. There's things you see during
- 12:15the game that I don't, that I make no Jess but there are
- 12:20certain things. I know.
- 12:21I'm probably missing some Brian. Let's start it up.
- 12:23Let's Crank It Up in the first Order.
- 12:25What do you feeling? Alright, so first quarter right
- 12:29out. The gate offense, looks smooth,
- 12:33offensive line, is what really jumped off at me, right out the
- 12:37gate, having Brock in there, it just it, hums different it.
- 12:43Just get it hums different. And I was seeing him all and
- 12:47guys all game. But right out the gate, like I
- 12:50could just see the impact he was having on the offensive line and
- 12:52just how much better It looked at some of those own exchanges
- 12:59and not not having those - plays because of some of those that
- 13:03we've seen in the past. So that mean right at the gate
- 13:04that was big and Herbert took advantage of that early on.
- 13:09I mean, we had a couple big runs on that first drive, even though
- 13:12we settled for three and, you know, after the, the turnover
- 13:17came back and he was You know, hot again on that second Drive.
- 13:22I mean, I'm going to say some words that we haven't really
- 13:26said in a while ban Herbert has lead back potential, he does
- 13:31man, he absolutely does. He runs a he's got speed and
- 13:36power, he gets caught his Visions really good.
- 13:39There's a couple times night, he waited set it up, moved it in.
- 13:43Also like we kept it. Very simple that those first
- 13:46couple drives. It we weren't trying to do crazy
- 13:49things. They just don't feel just like
- 13:51this is we're going to execute our game plan.
- 13:52We're going to do this mention the Divine pick, man.
- 13:57Something I noticed early and I made a quick on this and this
- 14:00was kind of all night. We were just gang, tackling
- 14:03everywhere. We're getting pressure, we were
- 14:05gang tally. It was when they got hit by one
- 14:09within about a tenth of a second or two more there and they were
- 14:13down. Yep.
- 14:14The 14-yard that soft about like that was a pretty big deal and
- 14:19then Brian, what do you think? You see from the D line?
- 14:23On this Saudi line read is a monster.
- 14:28He's great at setting the edge and he's great at the bulrush.
- 14:33He's pushing the tackle into the quarterbacks lap and that's
- 14:36opening up pass rush lanes for other guys, too.
- 14:39So, I mean, I love what I'm seeing there.
- 14:42I like what I'm seeing from The Zone adjustments that have come
- 14:46with with this defense? Yeah.
- 14:50We've seen, you know, variations of man or like some cover three
- 14:56man under and things like that, but having some of those
- 14:59linebackers and the safety and whip in more Zone coverage is
- 15:06really giving them an opportunity to do some some
- 15:08things that play to their strengths which is some of that
- 15:11read react a little bit more baiting of quarterbacks into
- 15:15making some bad throws. So the only time that, you know,
- 15:19the core Go back. I saw was having some success
- 15:21was when he was able to throw on time up field between the Zone
- 15:25but any time where our guys are where they need to be became
- 15:30problem, then you know, we talked about the Diablo pick and
- 15:34that constant pressure in the backfield was something that
- 15:37kind of set up a lot of negative plays for them whether it was a
- 15:40couple interceptions or whether it was a couple of big sacks
- 15:44that we had in that first quarter, that really just got
- 15:47them off their game plan early. That's The one thing I noticed
- 15:51in mean, you talked about it and we actually I think I sent you a
- 15:54text or to was never seen this before with Bud.
- 15:58We blitzed backs. We've LED astray Sharlee but
- 16:01Tisdale they were delayed blitzes, though.
- 16:04They were not significant delays, but that's different.
- 16:08That's something we have never seen from our defense in all the
- 16:13years. We've offered to take football
- 16:15if we're Blitz and usually snap they're going and it's that
- 16:19delay. Laid and I know you mentioned to
- 16:21me when I talk to you about a while ago, here about what that
- 16:24can do, especially with the guard.
- 16:25And one of them was like the Justice Reed and whoop delayed
- 16:29and he just went straight past the guard.
- 16:34But so like a pink real quick with the delay Blitz.
- 16:36Now, when that looks like it's part of our scheme.
- 16:38Now what it does to especially the interior lineman.
- 16:43So the big thing especially for so with a four-man front there's
- 16:45going to be one guard that usually doesn't have a In front
- 16:50of them that they're blocking. Usually, you know, whatever side
- 16:54that the the one technique is for our defense, that guard is
- 16:59probably going to have some sort of some to read to three, read
- 17:04situation for linebackers coming in.
- 17:07And if they don't see anyone right off the bat and they see
- 17:09somebody else next to them, that's struggling with their
- 17:12man. They might try to pinch and help
- 17:14and pinch and help. And at least at least throw hand
- 17:17out there. If not go in there and try to
- 17:19try to clean up, Up that situation and you know with a
- 17:23guy like read getting in there and that guard trying to help
- 17:27out, help out all of a sudden you got to delay.
- 17:28Brits, let's Rooker Delay from from d'accord, tis?
- 17:32And now they're in the backfield making a big play, Man.
- 17:36Exactly, this, huge sort of, hit a wall down, swing on the
- 17:40offense in the beginning of the first quarter.
- 17:43But at the end of the first quarter were up 17, nothing.
- 17:46I don't think any hokey fan would complain about that.
- 17:49Start with Three times. We scored three times.
- 17:53We stop them. Basically, they were
- 17:55non-existent on their offense, but we go into this second
- 17:58quarter and, you know, just a couple, you know, kind of two
- 18:01big moments in the game Brian. Yeah.
- 18:05So I mean, we kind of started the second quarter, the first
- 18:07drive in the 2nd quarter, had a couple - plays, and
- 18:10unfortunately, at the end of one of those - plays Burmeister goes
- 18:14down on, it takes a sack and comes down weird on his throwing
- 18:18hand and comes off the field. We think it might be dislocation
- 18:23or something like that, you know, turns out later we find
- 18:26out it was you was having some sort of some hand cramps,
- 18:30couldn't couldn't close as close as grip there, so that that was
- 18:34an interesting that even they noted on the broadcast a very
- 18:37interesting injury. Well, you know, is I've never
- 18:40heard of that particularly so, you know, that's that was
- 18:43something interesting to deal with, but we talked about on the
- 18:47podcast several time and that's quarterback.
- 18:50Room in the country in the country string quarterback
- 18:54Quincy. Patterson comes off the bench
- 18:57yep to the can get hits a couple.
- 19:00Good runs it is it's a couple Fades and all of a sudden we're
- 19:05in the end zone we are in the end zone and there was no yellow
- 19:09flag on the Tavian Robinson touchdown where they get mall.
- 19:13He was getting bald at the 5-yard line and he caught the
- 19:16ball. Six yards Deep In The End Zone.
- 19:19Yeah. He had to literally push his man
- 19:22into the end zone and then came back and made the play no flag.
- 19:25You know, it reminded me a lot of like, some of those those
- 19:30jump balls and Evans was throwing.
- 19:31When we played pit back in 2016, where we were just getting
- 19:35mauled, we kept still bringing them in and getting the
- 19:37touchdowns one possible flag that night and driving rdz
- 19:41crazy. It was, yeah, we missed and I
- 19:44know you love to see it early. First was that seam route to
- 19:47Mitchell and you're on the outside, please?
- 19:50And those safeties kind of started moving away.
- 19:52We pop that seem he gets us down and we score at one of our
- 19:56scoring plays which you always loved the scene and to and it so
- 20:01much that I think we should run a lot more scenes is that I feel
- 20:05like we never run them when I think we should exactly like a
- 20:11lot of times you know you get some of those third down calls
- 20:14and I think sometimes the same can just loosen things up a
- 20:17little bit so it was good to see that.
- 20:19Get hit that That was a big play for us that set up.
- 20:23Well that's set up the the first touchdown correct.
- 20:25That's how the first touchdown. Correct.
- 20:27And the other thing we missed before the TV on fade was at
- 20:30hell of a catch by Caleb Smith going back, keeping it off the
- 20:35ground and then securing it a couple plays later was the
- 20:38tadion touchdown honey that was a damn good catching up.
- 20:42You know Caleb have a couple of catches tonight you know, later
- 20:45on two-point conversion so it was awesome to see that.
- 20:48Yeah, we got a lot of guys. Involved.
- 20:50Even though there wasn't any big stat line for the receivers
- 20:53other than trays big run. I mean, I was were involved the
- 20:56whole night so it wasn't like they were just, you know, out
- 20:58there throwing blocks for her were they were doing some
- 21:01business. You just did not a lot of it
- 21:03showed up in the, in the stat line but you know, big nights
- 21:07for those guys and oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 21:11Yeah. And like, then we see the
- 21:14defense go three and out there. Continuously holding, we kind of
- 21:18stall, a little Little bit and say, install because we scored
- 21:24the touchdown and we kind of have a couple's, you know, ponds
- 21:29we move the ball a little bit. But then, as we're going in
- 21:32here, it 17-7, they score on us finally.
- 21:37And we come out and we go on a nice long drive, 75 yards, we
- 21:45score touchdown. And this is to me where the game
- 21:48flip because they're still Down 17.
- 21:50They just answered. We answer and you're feeling
- 21:52okay. If even they kick a field goal,
- 21:55they have to feel good about themselves.
- 21:57Defense goes out three down or three and out, eight yards punt.
- 22:04Give it a little bit of a good field position.
- 22:06Thanks to that punt. It was going to be deep.
- 22:09They brought it up a little bit for us.
- 22:11Yep. And then couple plays, later big
- 22:15play makes the big play. It was our favorite play of the
- 22:22the favorite play of the podcast, the jet sweet man, they
- 22:27Jet Sweep to Trey. He gets outside, you know does a
- 22:31good job of making the cut when he reads the safety coming up to
- 22:35fill kind of shoulders off one tackle and next thing you know
- 22:39he's Off to the Races and took a corner in the the backside
- 22:44safety to finally walk him down. So that was a huge each play in.
- 22:49It was a play that I think we needed to kind of get some of
- 22:52that that that good feeling about what we were doing back.
- 22:55So you know, we had had a sustained drive after you know
- 23:00Braxton's injury and after giving up the touchdown, you
- 23:04know, Quincy went out there, let a pretty good drive.
- 23:06We got a good touchdown and then but having being able to hit
- 23:09that big play again, really kind of got that momentum back in our
- 23:12favor and felt like we were taking the control of the game
- 23:15over again. You know what it felt like it's
- 23:18it's the python Theory. It felt like we loosen it up for
- 23:21a second and then when traded that big play, it was like,
- 23:24we're getting points here and it just tightened up and dip in Big
- 23:28Stone Gap. With the fade catches it, and he
- 23:33just felt like it's 31-7. It's just like, we can restrict
- 23:37them, the rest of this game. They cannot move the ball.
- 23:43Sustained and it enough. Yeah, I mean even when they were
- 23:46sustained and drives they weren't getting chunk plays fast
- 23:49like even though they're a Tempo offense because of how much they
- 23:53rely on the Run game? You know they're still slower
- 23:59drives then like a team that's running air raid or something
- 24:04like that where they can get a couple big plays in the open
- 24:07field, all of a sudden you have a 45 seconds.
- 24:10Drive on five plays or something like that.
- 24:13Now, it's even when they're running the way they want to,
- 24:16it's still taking some time off the clock.
- 24:20Absolutely. And, you know, they were able to
- 24:22get a couple good plays on their subsequent drive, and we're able
- 24:26to kick a field goal before half, but that still didn't
- 24:29really feel like it did a whole lot for them.
- 24:30Like I'm still calling this out some of the Saturday Pat, Finn,
- 24:35you cursed Us by putting up. We're going to be up 31-7 on NC
- 24:39State. 53-yard field. Also Pat, you don't hit tweet
- 24:49till till the clocks we 80. Like when, you know what I said
- 24:53is, I thought I'd go out and I went into the Twitter and I'm
- 24:56just like, I got the fry, the eye thing from fry from Futurama
- 25:01and I just day when that went through, I pressed it, like, you
- 25:04deserve this because of that. So we come out in the third
- 25:08quarter Briny sea state gets the ball, And they kind of went, I
- 25:12don't know if you would call it Tempo, but they kind of went
- 25:15with some just some quick passes down the middle and the next
- 25:19thing you know, you know, they're driving down the field
- 25:22three-step drops, they hit a couple, good passes and then
- 25:26something you mentioned in the Podcast, Thursday about Hoffman.
- 25:32Yes. So he was late throwing him out
- 25:36against Wake Forest. They got took to the house by
- 25:38the safety. Little different scenario but
- 25:42same, same route and same instance of Hockman.
- 25:46Throwing the ball late. They ran another out route.
- 25:50In this case, instead of having man with a safety shell, we had
- 25:55Marie out there kind of playing a little off Zone and he baited
- 26:01Hockman in the throwing the out. He kind of set their few yards
- 26:06off. I think it looked like Hockman
- 26:08may have had a re that he wanted to go to where else first and
- 26:11then he was he was going to the out.
- 26:14He saw he had a little bit of cushion out there and he thought
- 26:16I got the arm to get it in there and as soon as Marie saw those
- 26:20eyes go over there. He broke on, it picked it off,
- 26:23almost took it to the house. It was after the way we like
- 26:28just kick their dick in the dirt in the first half like there was
- 26:32no better way to come out in the second half and just start
- 26:35things off man. And unfortunately only had to
- 26:38settle for a field goal on that as Result of that.
- 26:41But I think it just at that moment I was like, all right
- 26:45there will a starting to break a little bit here.
- 26:47Oh yeah, they knew with that pick right there.
- 26:52Like this is over. And I think what we did is we
- 26:54went super conservative. We were like for power play.
- 26:56A three power plays and we just kick a field goal to make it
- 27:003410 Europe, 24 points. It's, you know, your five
- 27:04minutes off. In the third quarter is, how
- 27:06long are you going to be a task or 25 points?
- 27:08You you, you're probably not going to be asked for 25.
- 27:10Points in that time, you know they kept Hockman in though,
- 27:16counted Jenkins causes a bad throat, we already mentioned it,
- 27:18justice because justice re was a beast all night.
- 27:21We stop them again on another drive and then Brian, we kind of
- 27:26low and behold after we stop them somebody shows back up.
- 27:31Hey Braxton Burmeister back in the game.
- 27:35Alliteration aside. Yeah it looks like the he was
- 27:38able to shake off. Whatever is going on with this.
- 27:40And I don't know if it was few, got some fluids or ate some sort
- 27:44of special food in the locker room at halftime.
- 27:47The rumor is out there. He ate mustard because it felt
- 27:50like he needed some salt in his body, okay?
- 27:54Maybe the awkward hit Braxton has not played in over two years
- 27:58or close to two years, maybe just all that kind of happening
- 28:01all at once but he comes back out and Down the field.
- 28:07We go for 46 yards. Yeah pick them up, pick up
- 28:12another field goal there. Yep income another field, gold
- 28:16her, it has another good run Braxton.
- 28:18Has a good run, then with the pass interference penalty, where
- 28:23if that guy doesn't trip Caleb Smith, he's walked because it
- 28:28was April. If you looking at the replay me
- 28:31and you, we hit real quickly, hit each other in this life.
- 28:34I'm tripping. Caleb Smith walks on Earth, That
- 28:36ball and he's a touchdown. Oh yeah they save themselves
- 28:39there. Yep because Caleb had a step he
- 28:43was in good position for the ball.
- 28:45Ball was thrown looked like on time based on where you know
- 28:49with Caleb getting tripped up ended up only about like six
- 28:52yards short of where the ball into Blanding.
- 28:54So I mean he will ran right under that and like I said, I
- 28:58don't think that the corner would have been in a position to
- 29:00make any sort of play on it. So yeah.
- 29:03But that's so the setup of that drive though.
- 29:06Was the heart attack moment of the night with Tavian at that
- 29:09weird ass angle, trying to get a feel that punt.
- 29:13Yes. So he was in the he was what
- 29:16right in the middle of the field and he was going for it and you
- 29:20got to text me it's like you got to just let that go.
- 29:23It's a weird angle. You're coming up with manga like
- 29:25just let it go like running full speed and you've got guys coming
- 29:30at you that are close enough. Just Just Let It Go.
- 29:33Yep. We don't we don't want you to
- 29:35get Take any unnecessary hits like that.
- 29:38We don't want you to end up putting the ball on the turf and
- 29:41give them a cheap and easy touch down there, to give them some
- 29:44sort of Life at this point. So, you know, learning
- 29:48experience, but, I mean, at the same time, you know, he still
- 29:53did a really good job in terms of pump returning tonight.
- 29:55Other than that one little little situation.
- 29:58And again, the level of difficulty of doing that was
- 30:04high, you just got to be smart enough.
- 30:06To say I'm I don't need to take that risk.
- 30:09No, not not that. At that point in the game when
- 30:11you're up 34 we don't need a big play right now.
- 30:15We need to protect the ball and you know, fortunately for us we
- 30:19have fallen on it. And next thing, you know, we're
- 30:24back in business here. Now the field kicking a field
- 30:26goal. Finally they pull Bailey hot and
- 30:29then they put in Leary the sophomore, he comes in, he he
- 30:33does lead them down for a touchdown Drive.
- 30:37Really on that one. They were against the the second
- 30:40or second Timur defensive line who over overall the second team
- 30:44defensive line played really good with them or a bar no Eli
- 30:47Adams at times. Zion was at times with Kendricks
- 30:52Philpott and fuga in the middle. But this one they kind of came
- 30:56out with Leary hitting outside Zone.
- 30:59He made some good throws. Kendricks did get a good sack on
- 31:02that. Play on the interior and they
- 31:04had to convert a fourth down to get there.
- 31:06So clearly when you're having to go for like 48 the games Out Of
- 31:12Reach and, but they get Again, part of their 200 yards of their
- 31:16136 336, yards of total offense. Yep, right there.
- 31:23You know? Now the best part I really liked
- 31:25this because he had missed the time earlier.
- 31:29You know, we cheat we keep Braxton in the game and that's
- 31:36Kind of when he has a good run, then Jalen Holston has a good
- 31:42run and then on the jail and Holster on at the end, very
- 31:45scary moment. Co-lead Martin, safety number 21
- 31:49for NC State. Just take.
- 31:50It was, it was a just, it's football, his neck, my back, he
- 31:55was on the field, both teams on their knees at.
- 31:59I felt like you saw through one on his knees but you kind of saw
- 32:01him. I don't know if you saw that
- 32:02moment, they kind of showed him and he was just kind of, he's
- 32:05kind of said, And he just had his head down, very scary
- 32:10moment. They take him out, luckily, just
- 32:12a couple minutes away from the hospital, hopefully, hear good
- 32:14things about that, young man over the next few days.
- 32:18Prayers up for him Brian. And absolutely, definitely a
- 32:24scary moment and having been on the field for for a moment, like
- 32:28that in the past it's definitely something where, you know, your
- 32:32thoughts are going out to the other team because you don't
- 32:35want that. That to happen to your team and,
- 32:38you know, everybody's out there grinding, trying to win, just
- 32:41hope the best for me. Didn't you hate to see it
- 32:43injury? Like that happened on the
- 32:45football field especially to start the season so prayers and
- 32:51thoughts out to him. Hopefully he has a swift
- 32:53recovery and you know, nothing too serious there.
- 32:58So we'll pick back up here but we after that to happen we had a
- 33:03couple movies like we plummet with Pin him deep.
- 33:07So then they a, they take a long drive, they get what 45 yards on
- 33:11the drive and then go for it on Fourth and we have to stop them
- 33:14there. And and that's where we kind of
- 33:16put. Put the foot on the throat here.
- 33:19Put the foot on the throat. Yep.
- 33:22You're coming later, right back out.
- 33:23We got a first play from scrimmage on that drive.
- 33:27Braxton Burmeister, is in their throwback screen.
- 33:32To Khalil Herbert for 46 yards, that's there.
- 33:36That did set up a short yardage situation inside the five who
- 33:41comes in Curtis frequency and for a pretty short yardage
- 33:44situation. Thank you, Quincy.
- 33:46Patterson comes back into the game for short.
- 33:49Yardage gets the touchdown there and then the surprise of this
- 33:53little exchange is that we brought Braxton back in for the
- 33:57two-point conversion. I think we I guess food, just
- 34:00really wanted 45 points. Happy is on the TV right now.
- 34:05I'm assuming Assuming that's what he wanted, but also a good
- 34:08chance in that situation, you know, we're up 43 and they can,
- 34:12you know, people like well, that's just adding on and it's
- 34:15like, well, no, he missed a significant amount of time was
- 34:17actually a nice little plate, is a little roll out, right?
- 34:20And he actually, I think Caleb Smith was his second option and
- 34:24they covered. I think James Mitchell and then
- 34:26there's Caleb kind of drifting back underneath.
- 34:28Pops, it in two point conversion, kind of did a little
- 34:30of that, that Montana trick. He was, you know, was rolling
- 34:34out but they had some Penetration up feeling he had to
- 34:37give some more ground and then kind of throw off his off his
- 34:40back foot. But he found his second target
- 34:43Smith right there in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown
- 34:47and that that really kind of kind of close it out there.
- 34:51There was a long drive by NC State in garbage.
- 34:54Time probably took up more clock than they wanted, throw Port
- 34:59will, but I don't know, we gotta go back to the Quincy Patterson
- 35:02running, what doug Nestor did. Yes we do.
- 35:05I'm glad you reminded me of that.
- 35:08I was watching the replays and they were talking about it on
- 35:12the SEC network. Nestor was in their guard and he
- 35:17pulled and led the way for Quincy on that on that touchdown
- 35:21short yardage and he completely blew the shit out of the
- 35:27linebacker like the linebacker came in the hole to fill and
- 35:30like you know he put him on his back again.
- 35:34And pancakes. I hope he gave him syrup to
- 35:37play. They just replay.
- 35:39He placed the guy back like eight yards.
- 35:43He's too like the the letter the cross on the H is where the bow
- 35:48our hands from the goal line, it's six yard.
- 35:54Again, that's what we call a pancake.
- 35:56I hope he gave him some syrup. Damn, right?
- 36:00And it's as fun doing this late night, Ron goes me and you've
- 36:03had a few beers. I've been up since 6:00 this
- 36:06morning. I'm a little delirious probably.
- 36:09Um, basically they did they go out and score another touchdown.
- 36:13Down. I'm on that drive though.
- 36:16You know, he'll Adams gets a set good for him.
- 36:21Marie tries to pick another one. He tried to undercut and he damn
- 36:24near got it. And Amazon it, he had his hands
- 36:28on him and then there was another play on that same long
- 36:31drive to hit, kind of their last drive that they score on guy
- 36:35gets up merged her Murray, Brian worries and he's a fucking ball.
- 36:39He wants that ball. Yeah.
- 36:41And He played well tonight. Armani Chapman.
- 36:47Are my Chapman tackle. Well, tonight, there was a
- 36:49couple times where he would get bigger guys on the sideline, and
- 36:52he essentially just made a very solid fundamental tackle got the
- 36:55guy down. Yeah, but he had the
- 36:57responsibility of having to take a guy out, you know, open field
- 37:01tackle, just him. And in space there, he did
- 37:04really well. He covered really well.
- 37:07If he did, they didn't go to his go his way A Lot, which says, a
- 37:10lot about what he was doing in coverage.
- 37:13He exactly. So again, all sorts of good
- 37:16things so they score it. We essentially get the ball
- 37:19back. We tried down, we could have had
- 37:22a 50 burger. Oh, yeah, yeah, Holston.
- 37:24Broke off a big run. The guide us inside the 10.
- 37:28Had a couple runs. It got us down to the to so
- 37:32coach Fuente with what? Just over a minute left decides.
- 37:36He's going to go ahead and we'll take a knee on it, call it a
- 37:40game. Yeah.
- 37:41And, and, and, you know, No. It's one of those things where
- 37:46we just kind of at the end of the game that was just kind of
- 37:50like if you told me and you Thursday night like this by the
- 37:57middle of the third quarter, you're going to be able to hop
- 38:00on Skype and chitchat out each other bullshit around for the
- 38:03game ends. We would have been like nah.
- 38:06There's too many potential guys out.
- 38:07There's there's too many things. Yeah, I didn't I thought we
- 38:12would probably still pull the win but I thought my anxiety
- 38:16would have been a whole lot higher, the whole game than it
- 38:18was so I thought I'd have been a little more high-strung and kind
- 38:20of just ready to bang it out. But now we were relaxed and
- 38:25chatting it up and just trying to trying to build this thing
- 38:28together before we before we press record and I will ask you
- 38:32this buddy who stood out to you in this game.
- 38:35Like, give me give me three guys that really showed up for you,
- 38:39that either you And expect, or even if we figure, if it's a
- 38:43guy, you thought needed to show up and they did just a really
- 38:45good job of fulfilling those expectations.
- 38:49Well, I'm fixing him already couple times.
- 38:50Brian Murray, Brian Murray showed up and even with Jermaine
- 38:58Nick right now, it makes me feel really good because in a people
- 39:03bagged on our money last year, more money as a freshmen played
- 39:06damn good. He was a top ten freshmen in the
- 39:08nation. So I knew he Play over Brian
- 39:11with very little experience, the way he played tonight, it makes
- 39:16me feel good even though he's not my top three Singletary.
- 39:20Came in a couple, good hits. I feel like he'll probably get
- 39:23there to make that room more depth wise Kiante Jenkins.
- 39:30I'm young unbelievable. And you know the third can I
- 39:37just say the whole freaking offensive I'll allow it.
- 39:41I'll allow it. It wasn't just one.
- 39:44You saw guys getting up field, you so good, pass Pros, you
- 39:50know, even the sack like the Braxton's a query kind of hurt
- 39:53his arm that wasn't that was on him going backwards.
- 39:56That was not only offensive line and they weren't getting to our
- 39:59quarterbacks unless they were bringing pressure.
- 40:02Yes. Absolutely.
- 40:04You talk about Brock in the communication and that's when
- 40:07you have a guy like Chris and aerosol who's a potential Belen
- 40:11FL. Tackle, and you have the two
- 40:15guys on the interior HUD, Nestor Medicus who are good guards, and
- 40:20Luke kanuda has grown into his own right tackle and you got 500
- 40:24feels like he's making the right calls.
- 40:26That's my what about your three? I'm right there with you on
- 40:31Kiante Jenkins. Okay, not just the tackle
- 40:36numbers, I saw him doing a really good job with with the
- 40:41Run fills. And I think the thing that
- 40:43impressed me most is that I didn't see him really out of
- 40:47position. Any like he was, he was where he
- 40:50needed to be, even if he wasn't the guy that was making the
- 40:52play, or if he may be missed a tackle, he was there.
- 40:56He was where he needed to be in that.
- 40:58That is saying something for a true freshman.
- 41:00Making their first start against a, I'd say a quality ACC
- 41:04opponent, I don't think NC State's top half of the league,
- 41:08but they're they're a team that, you know, especially in the Run
- 41:11game can I can hurt you if they execute well and, you know, he
- 41:16went out there and bawled out man, number two, for me.
- 41:23Brock Hoffman living up to all of the hype for that.
- 41:29We had for him both last year and coming into this year, man.
- 41:33I mean, we talked, we've talked him up, you know, feels like
- 41:35because He didn't have last year when we thought he would like it
- 41:40feels like we've had a lot of pent-up hype for Brock and to go
- 41:44out and have that type of performance.
- 41:46I mean, making all the right calls.
- 41:49Clean snaps song, completely mauling guys on the interior,
- 41:54really understands the Zone Concepts and having a center
- 41:58that does that that kind of trickles down to the guards.
- 42:02So that that's really going to help their game as well.
- 42:06So, I really love that. And if I had to put a last not
- 42:10there, I'm going to put Khalil Herbert.
- 42:12Okay, Herbert. I mean, watching him what he was
- 42:16doing in the open field with his one cut?
- 42:18I mean, he was one cut and he was Finding finding where those
- 42:22were those lanes were and just making that NC State Defense,
- 42:26pay all night. I'm going to ask you this
- 42:29question about the Leo because the other two guys were kind of
- 42:31on. I'm on the whole offensive line
- 42:33because I think that group is absolutely Beast.
- 42:36Buddy of mine from the West Coast text me.
- 42:39I haven't seen a running back. Running back like that in the
- 42:42backfield in the last in 10 years.
- 42:46I'm not say yeah. Say yeah, David in terms of, if
- 42:51he's able to put stack some of these games back to back like
- 42:53this? Yeah, definitely.
- 42:54I could say that. I mean, we've seen guys have a
- 42:57couple big games like this, so if he shows me this consistency.
- 43:03Yeah. I'll go ahead and throw that on
- 43:04him. But I mean just seeing what he
- 43:05did tonight, right out the gate. I mean, that was impressive.
- 43:10That was impressive. I like I said lead back,
- 43:12potential is is where I'm at right now.
- 43:14I'm not going to call him the lead back.
- 43:16But he's got lead back potential and I haven't said that since
- 43:22David Wilson was in our backfield.
- 43:26He was special and you see the way we talked about Khalil man,
- 43:31power speed vision there a couple times you.
- 43:35And I asked him like there's a couple times he set up his runs
- 43:37and you're like, yeah, yeah he did.
- 43:39He'd let it develop and then he hit and he's got more burst than
- 43:43I thought I saw on his tape from from Kansas and let's just go
- 43:48ahead and give a quick shout out to Justin Fuente and his
- 43:52coaches. Oh my God, for pulling guys from
- 43:54the transfer portal and have They're make impacts right away,
- 43:58between read and Herbert's big night.
- 44:02And what Blackshear was able to do with xero practice this week
- 44:05and probably not even part of the game plan, in terms of how
- 44:09they were planning to attack. NC State's defense, I mean, that
- 44:14they did wonderful and I'll tell you another guy that did really
- 44:17show up on the stat sheet, but did some good things in the in
- 44:21the Run game. Fairs was out there getting some
- 44:24Big Blocks on the edge. To open up some of those long
- 44:28runs we had both from Burmeister and also from from Khalil
- 44:32Herbert. All right?
- 44:34Brian. I'ma send it to you and I'll say
- 44:38it to the listen to the podcast. We ain't seeing everything from
- 44:42this team yet and that's scary. Yeah you talk about a block and
- 44:49very soon. Get used too much time pass.
- 44:50Kang Chang a hodge Blackshear in full mode.
- 44:54Getting each on King back. It's not to mention the fact
- 45:00that we were using our number two and number three,
- 45:02quarterbacks in volume. One of the Season we took you be
- 45:07one gets out there and gets out there.
- 45:11All right. Brian, I'm looking up here, I am
- 45:13not staying up much past 1:00 because it appears that BYU has
- 45:18absolutely blown. The Doyles off Troy your Lakers
- 45:21have advanced to the finals. Congratulate have.
- 45:23Yes they have we'll definitely when We get back later this
- 45:28week. We will definitely hit on some
- 45:29of the stuff we saw not only in the ACC, probably some, just
- 45:33some things we saw in general today, it was a great day of
- 45:36college football. I know you did some family
- 45:38activities, I watch football had to leave the house for a little
- 45:42while. Wife got a little headache.
- 45:43So I took the boys, over to the In-laws, still have to watch
- 45:46some games, but, you know, yelling the garage over there,
