- 0:23Music. I'm alive.
- 0:35Welcome to the All Balls No Filler podcast.
- 0:37Live from the cabin Kitchen. I'm Zach.
- 0:40He's Brad. Hello there and.
- 0:43Behind the scenes, we have a man who always cheques the terms and
- 0:46conditions before he actually accepts him.
- 0:48He's researcher Cal. He's researcher, Cal.
- 0:51He absolutely reads every word, doesn't he?
- 0:55That's probably not a lie. That's probably not far fetched
- 0:57to be fair. How are you doing mate?
- 0:58You're right. What?
- 0:59Do you mean it's not a lie? Nothing is a lie about
- 1:02researcher Cal. Sorry, sorry.
- 1:04They're all facts, I promise you now.
- 1:07They're all facts that we state about Mr Research Cal.
- 1:14Oh God, I just love the guy. Like I literally love the fact
- 1:18that he like climbs the tallest towers in the world just for
- 1:21fun. But it's just, that's it.
- 1:23It's just the guy he is, isn't it?
- 1:26That's it. How are you doing today, mate?
- 1:28How? How are you?
- 1:29How are you feeling? Yeah, I'm all right.
- 1:31I'm all right. I think I've recovered from the
- 1:34Super Bowl. I've, I say recovered.
- 1:36I was a bit of a 1/2, a halfway man actually this year, which
- 1:40we'll get to. But yeah, I'm all right.
- 1:41I felt it a little bit yesterday for various reasons, but yeah,
- 1:46I'm good. Generally good.
- 1:48How are you? I mean about weekends I suppose.
- 1:53But other than that, emotionally I'm I've overcome it.
- 1:56I'm not as tired. I was absolutely shattered
- 1:58yesterday and I was definitely, definitely far too hungover
- 2:03yesterday as well. We had a did.
- 2:05I see a picture of you. I'm interrupting.
- 2:08Did I see a picture of you asleep?
- 2:10No, so this has been taken so far out of context right because
- 2:16he can't speak. I'm sure Kyle to our picture.
- 2:18So what happened What one of the one of the many new we'll get
- 2:22into this, but one of the many New England Patriots mistakes I
- 2:24happened at the weekend. I knocked my heart down, put my
- 2:27head against the wall and I was sighing and then he took the
- 2:30picture and it looks like I've fallen asleep.
- 2:32No, I was really drunk, but I was definitely not asleep on
- 2:35that and I was wondering if you ever see that I've got social
- 2:38like going across the socials. I definitely we were asleep on
- 2:41that, but we so we had a very, very good Super Bowl party over
- 2:46the game, but we had a very, very good Super Bowl party for
- 2:48the listens. I don't know mean by the part of
- 2:50the American football, British American football team called
- 2:52Wakefield District Raiders. And we held our Super Bowl party
- 2:56at one of our sponsor pubs, which was an absolute amazing
- 3:00night. And just before we get into the
- 3:02show as such, we raised like over £200 from Macmillan
- 3:05charity, which is phenomenal and credit to everyone that turned
- 3:10up. So I just want to say thank you
- 3:11if you were down, by the way, for that.
- 3:13Yeah, very hungover and I think I needed it.
- 3:19You definitely did, mate. It's absolute.
- 3:22Well, it's a great night, but a shambles of a night for a
- 3:25Patriots fan. But you know, yeah, it was a
- 3:29really good night. Obviously I wasn't there for the
- 3:31duration for various reasons we won't get into, but the event
- 3:36itself's a cracker. So like, thanks to everyone who
- 3:39came down, thanks to our hosts, who've been our host for a
- 3:43number of years now, and thanks to the guys and girls that put
- 3:47their hands in the pockets for supporting our sponsors with
- 3:51their ongoing Macmillan fundraising efforts.
- 3:55That's just another another one of the many things they do and
- 3:58another one of the many things that lads support them with.
- 4:01So yeah, thanks to everyone for that little pluck, I guess
- 4:04there. But an interesting night
- 4:07generally. Interesting.
- 4:10He's a very loose word you could say.
- 4:13But before we get into Brad, what have we got in store on
- 4:16today's show? Do you wanna let us know?
- 4:18Yeah, I mean, surprise, surprise, we'll be getting into
- 4:24the biggest game of the NFL season, the Super Bowl.
- 4:26Obviously that'll be the main focus of tonight reviewing
- 4:29Sunday night, but we'll also touch on the latest news from
- 4:33the past week and of course, a return of all other balls for
- 4:40other major stories in the world of sport.
- 4:42And of course, the weekly staple now, Carl's Conundrum.
- 4:49So yeah, like a condensed episode in terms of features
- 4:53this week, but we've got quite a lot to chat about and discuss.
- 4:56So should we, should we just get straight into it?
- 5:00If, if we have to, I mean, we can, we can miss out the Super
- 5:03Bowl if you want to. We can get straight to the
- 5:05Carl's conundrum, which call it a day.
- 5:06I'm more than more than happy to do so.
- 5:09I'm not sure why you think, well, you'd want that, really.
- 5:12It surely can't be anything to do with the 29th 13 victory to
- 5:15the Seahawks, could it? Right, Super Bowl 60.
- 5:20Let's just let's just address this, shall we?
- 5:23All right, Weren't the most entertaining Super Bowl for the
- 5:261st 3/4 of it. I must admit that from a from a
- 5:29from a layman's point of view, I'm going to touch into this in
- 5:31a little bit for layman's point of view, and I want to put a
- 5:33disclaimer out there before we get started and before I give
- 5:36some definite Patriots views on this.
- 5:39The better team 110% won. They were better all around the
- 5:42field. They they deserved that way.
- 5:46If we'd have won that game, I'd have 110% felt cheated out of
- 5:50this. Like in that like they were
- 5:54phenomenal on not every aspect of the ball, but most of the
- 6:00most aspects of the ball. And then they just became
- 6:02perfect towards the end of the game.
- 6:04And what I mean by that is I don't think I've ever seen a a
- 6:11defence as good in the time that I've watched football from play
- 6:17one of the first quarter to the last play of the fourth quarter.
- 6:21They were on real the Patriots could not stop them that they
- 6:26they made the offensive line look like high school.
- 6:29And it it was concerning to see because we've come up against
- 6:33some good defences this year. And I and I, I will back that we
- 6:36we have an easy schedule. And I don't don't actually the
- 6:39be the easy schedule thing will really bite us at this moment in
- 6:42time because I think any team in the NFL could have played that
- 6:44game. And how come we're going to be
- 6:46very similar regardless to who played because of how good that
- 6:50defence genuinely, genuinely was.
- 6:52They scored us across all areas of that field.
- 6:56But yeah, it was tough, mate. It really was as a Patriots fan
- 7:00going into it, I, I, I said to you before and I said like,
- 7:03look, I'm really not looking forward to Super Bowl.
- 7:05You know, as a, as a Patriots fan, you kind of go in there
- 7:07expecting Super Bowls to, to go kind of your way.
- 7:10And I saw that bad feeling. But talking their defence to
- 7:15begin with, what, what were your initial views and that first
- 7:19half in particular, Like what were your initial views of how
- 7:21they came out as that defence? I thought they were just
- 7:25absolutely dominant. And I think they had a real
- 7:28clear plan to just make Drake May's night a misery.
- 7:35And I know that's obvious, isn't it?
- 7:36Like most people go, all right, let's go get the quarterback,
- 7:38let's make him a misery. But it was really obvious from
- 7:41the get go that they were just absolutely clinical in
- 7:47everything they did. They knew their roles, they knew
- 7:50their responsibilities. I thought they were very, very
- 7:55good and and quite effective at sort of not disguising coverage
- 8:00as such, although they did do that, you know, but just showing
- 8:07enough differences throughout the game that Drake may and and
- 8:13this isn't this is not a like a it's not a dig at the guy.
- 8:15He's, you know, it's his second year.
- 8:17I think I'm almost certain he would have been the youngest
- 8:22quarterback to win. I don't know if he's the
- 8:24youngest quarterback to be in a Super Bowl.
- 8:26I'm almost certain he was the youngest one to win it.
- 8:28The second one, it think he was second behind Dan Marino on
- 8:32that. Yeah, I believe so research
- 8:34college should double check on this.
- 8:35But I've I've got I've got something to do with Dan Marino
- 8:37in there and youngest and all along the lines of but I yeah,
- 8:41go on. Sorry.
- 8:42I mean, I should, I should know that one, shouldn't I really?
- 8:44But like, I just feel that they they were just absolutely
- 8:50clinical in everything they did. And I don't think they let up
- 8:53until the fourth quarter really. Like, you know, Patriots were
- 8:56scoreless until the 4th. And like, if we're honest, and I
- 9:02think you'd probably agree, I think the scoreline probably
- 9:05flattered the Patriots a little bit.
- 9:07Like they did have the moments like, you know, and Drake may
- 9:10have some great plays and, you know, he had a couple of really
- 9:13good scrambles under pressure and a few really nice passes
- 9:18that he completed. But he did also meltdown at
- 9:21times as well. And I think it's it's kind of it
- 9:27showed his it showed his position in terms of his career.
- 9:33It was his second year in the league.
- 9:36I think the Patriots arguably have just outperformed this
- 9:39year. Their expectations.
- 9:40They've almost, they've almost been ahead of the curve, like no
- 9:43one expected them really to be in the Super Bowl this year.
- 9:48I think the Ray Ball hire, they've recruited well.
- 9:52They've made some good signings that you can see it there, like
- 9:55you can see the promise for Patriots.
- 9:57But the Seahawks were just absolutely ruthless.
- 10:02They suffocated him, absolutely suffocated him.
- 10:05There's one play, I made a note of it that's really stood out to
- 10:09me about not above all, but there was, I think his name's
- 10:14Mills. He's on the on the Hawks D line,
- 10:15isn't he? And he, I can't remember who it
- 10:18was. It was the tackle or the guard.
- 10:21And I can't remember off the top of my head who it was for the
- 10:23Patriots, but he sacked Drake May whilst the offensive line
- 10:30player was actually in between the two of them.
- 10:33It just absolutely bullied him that yes, it was, Oh no, it
- 10:38might not have been, you know it, it might not have been.
- 10:42It was Campbell or it was Wilson.
- 10:45Research Carl's there. Thank you.
- 10:47Yeah, it was. It was absolutely Wilson.
- 10:51We'll come to Campbell in in a moment.
- 10:52But he just absolutely bullied him right into Drake May.
- 10:56And he literally just wrapped both of them up and sacked me.
- 10:59It was. And that play was just like the
- 11:01definition. I mean Research Carl's popped in
- 11:04a stat here that apparently they only blitzed 15% of the time,
- 11:08which is is absolutely nuts because of the absolute hammer
- 11:12Drake May took. Yeah, I, I, I predicted in the
- 11:17Super Bowl preview pod that we did last week.
- 11:20And if you haven't listened to that guys, go check it out.
- 11:21It's on his on his YouTube and all the Spotify and things.
- 11:24But we, I printed on that one that I think, I think the
- 11:29Seahawks will bottle it under the pressure and the Patriots
- 11:34organisation. I know they've got youngest by
- 11:36not younger squad, but they know they've got newer faces coming
- 11:38into this. They will have they have that
- 11:40experience as an organisation going anywhere.
- 11:42In hindsight, it was the complete opposite way around.
- 11:44Like again, I will go back to the scheduling thing that we've
- 11:48had throughout the year, but at the same time on the on the
- 11:51bounce that we've played them tough defences.
- 11:53So as offensive line have come up against some tough defences.
- 11:56You know, Drake may have come up against some tough pressures and
- 11:58some tough defences to read into the coverage.
- 12:00But I genuinely think from the moment they went out on that
- 12:02field, it it was like they'd never played with each other
- 12:06before, no pun intended, but it was like like they'd never done
- 12:10anything on that field in terms of in in terms of anything.
- 12:14It just looked lacklustre. Like, you know, I've seen
- 12:17reports and people making ex not an excuse and such, but for Will
- 12:21Campbell are ATAR his ACL, his MCL at some point throughout the
- 12:24year was come back. He's doing well.
- 12:26If you were 100% down put on the field, I understand it.
- 12:29I understand it's been great, but they capitalised on a weak
- 12:33part of the on a, on a weak area of that line.
- 12:35And from halfway through the first quarter, they didn't let
- 12:38up. They just hammered that left
- 12:39side of our offensive line and it got and it worked and it got
- 12:42through to Drake May. It got into Drake May's head.
- 12:45He he every time the ball was stopped and it looked like it
- 12:50was going to be a pass. He just felt like he couldn't
- 12:52stay in that pocket. It was it's a neutral fan.
- 12:57If you're, if it's your first time ever watching a Super Bowl,
- 12:59that was the most boring 3/4 of a Super Bowl from a football
- 13:01point of view, from a skill set point of view, that defence was
- 13:06just textbook. Like we're sat in the pub, bro,
- 13:09and I'm and I'm and me. This is like like me and Johno,
- 13:12our friend Johno was a Patriots fan against the entire pub,
- 13:16right? And it gets to like the third,
- 13:17like the second quarter and me and every play, we just glancing
- 13:22at each other like it's going to be a long night.
- 13:23This it's going to be a long, long, long night.
- 13:27Now, look, I agree what you're saying.
- 13:30We're ahead of schedule, right? I'm not going to kind of scream
- 13:32about how I I'd have been happy if we'd have gone out the, you
- 13:38know, the game before DFC championship.
- 13:41Like, is SA happy? I'd have been proud because of
- 13:44how far we've come compared to the season before.
- 13:46Getting to the Super Bowl is fantastic.
- 13:48Do we set as expectations that high next year?
- 13:50I still don't think we do. I still think we look at all
- 13:52depends on how free agency goes and how we recruit in that free
- 13:55agency because, you know, coming up against a team like Seattle
- 13:59who did come out all all good blazing.
- 14:01And I stand by the fact that I put any team in front of them in
- 14:05that Super Bowl and the same result happens with that defence
- 14:08anyway. I just think like we, we, we've
- 14:12got to try and compete with the best we've got.
- 14:14We've got a reactive free agency.
- 14:16Now. I'm going to flip it round here
- 14:18and look, the Patriots D played well.
- 14:23I think both defences play phenomenal.
- 14:27The the the Seattle one was far better because they stopped us
- 14:29getting within any sort of field goal range where the Patriots D
- 14:32didn't. We were doing no scars for what
- 14:34were the first 3/4. I believe it was 2 1/2 three put
- 14:38up tight and although scissor route through but like.
- 14:42I think it was 0 until the fourth quarter, wasn't it?
- 14:44I think. Yeah, and I, but I don't think
- 14:48I, I think the Patriots D shut down the offence, the Seattle's
- 14:52offence better than I expected to do.
- 14:55Christian Gonzalez saved 2 touchdowns.
- 14:58They, they, they should have been, there should be two
- 15:00touchdowns up. He is.
- 15:03And there's a still shot of him diving and like stopping the
- 15:07ball, right. And it is absolutely.
- 15:12Did you know if you're, if you're DBR, if you're, if you're
- 15:14playing gonna play cornerback, that's the kind of play you want
- 15:17to make in the biggest, biggest stage when everything's going
- 15:20against you and you're still making plays like that.
- 15:22I do think the D did well. Yeah, it was like, I mean, I
- 15:27made a note of a Gonzalez, those two stops, like the first one
- 15:31was against JSM, wasn't it, on a deep ball?
- 15:34And if he did, he literally like leaped and managed to just back
- 15:38that down. It was absolutely, I'm, I'm not
- 15:41saying it's textbook because it wasn't textbook.
- 15:43It that was like an unreal play. And then he did it again right
- 15:47in the end zone at the end of the second.
- 15:49I think it was just before half time.
- 15:50I can't remember who it was, who the target was, but he just got
- 15:53in in there where it looks like for sure a touchdown and he had
- 15:58he did have a great game. And I agree with you, like I
- 16:00think Patriots D did have a good game.
- 16:02Like if you look at the games of the Rams, it a lot of them have
- 16:07been not shoot outs as such, but high scoring.
- 16:09Like I mean the Rams, sorry, I said Rams didn't have the the
- 16:12games of the Seahawks. I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 16:16The Seahawks games, a lot of them are really high scoring
- 16:18from their offence. And then the game against the
- 16:20Rams, hence the mistake there. That was a bit of a shoot out
- 16:23between the two. Whereas, you know, I mean, I'm
- 16:28sure we'll touch on it more with the special teams, but they held
- 16:31the Seahawks back a fair, a fair while.
- 16:35I think the difference, I think the real difference between the
- 16:38two, it was that your defence, you can't win a game just with
- 16:45defence, can you? It's got to be a complete
- 16:48package. And I think that's what the
- 16:50Seahawks had. And although no, they didn't
- 16:53score touchdown after touchdown after touchdown, they had
- 16:56players, Donald included. He had some real clutch plays,
- 17:01which were almost like a like for like replica of what Drake
- 17:03May was facing and May was getting sacked or he was
- 17:07throwing incomplete passes or trying to get out and just was
- 17:11nowhere near where's Donald. Like there's a few players where
- 17:16he just stood there and he delivered a ball and then got
- 17:19hit by two or three players or he just made a little step and
- 17:23stepped then up into the pocket and delivered a rifle to
- 17:26somebody. There was a good few of them are
- 17:28Donald and it's it's almost like that role reverse.
- 17:31He's got that famous thing as in a Donald of that game against
- 17:33patriots of seeing ghosts. And it was almost like it was it
- 17:37was Drake May's turn to see ghosts and Donald's kind of
- 17:40there just like like I've been there.
- 17:43And but I think generally I think Pats Dee did play well.
- 17:49Gonzalez was a stand out for the Pats.
- 17:51Definitely. If you could have like a I mean,
- 17:55there's no rule is there that it's the winner or the loser
- 17:57that gets the MVP. But if you could have a losing
- 17:59team, MVPI would probably give it to Gonzalez.
- 18:05But. Yeah, it's.
- 18:06Just it was just a really weird game.
- 18:08I think I think I agree with you the most of that.
- 18:11I don't believe they were the full package in the first half.
- 18:14I think special teams and defensive wise in that first
- 18:16half they were. But the full package started,
- 18:19you know, started the third quarter midway through.
- 18:21Now I'm talking this next bit here.
- 18:22I'm talking kind of taking stats away from it from a fan watching
- 18:27the game, as a Patriots fan watching the game in particular,
- 18:31it's probably one of the worst games I've seen Drake may play
- 18:34in terms of just, it seemed that every single decision he made
- 18:41was the wrong one. And then it got to a point and
- 18:44again, taking stats completely out of this, it got to the point
- 18:47where it felt like he was trying too hard to overcome the
- 18:54mistakes. And then they're making more and
- 18:58it just didn't look like the like the Drake made that we were
- 19:01used to this year. You know, they're not a great
- 19:05pro season. They haven't it's been no, it's
- 19:07been no secret on that. And they've had some things
- 19:09against them on this on this pro season.
- 19:10But at the same time, they haven't the great the best pro
- 19:12season. I just think the pressures just
- 19:14got got, got, got got and it's finally hit more.
- 19:16Hopefully there's only one or two ways to the Patriots.
- 19:18It's going to be the biggest turning point where they're
- 19:20going to like mature over the offseason massively.
- 19:22They're going to walk out this and go right.
- 19:24We can't cup like this again, like we got there.
- 19:27We got embarrassed, we've got dominated, we got annihilated.
- 19:30We are, we are go to work right now.
- 19:32We recruit, we come back, we hit harder, we win or it gets to him
- 19:38and it eats him away. It eats him away.
- 19:40And then every game, every decision is the wrong decision.
- 19:44But games happen. One of the things that we say as
- 19:45coaches, when we when we're, when we've got our players and,
- 19:48and stuff don't go our way, one of our things we say is it's the
- 19:51last play, get on there, it's a fresh down.
- 19:53Go back out there, it's a fresh down.
- 19:55Now I understand there's a little bit of a difference
- 19:56between Division 2 football and and the NFL kind of get that.
- 20:00But at the same time, the principal's still there with he
- 20:05needs to now be man managed and coached by, by the offence and
- 20:08the by the Patriots and the organisation, him and the
- 20:11offensive line, especially that left side, that rookie side, to
- 20:14go back out and be like, look, shit's happened.
- 20:17We can't change that now. Now you got to make shit right.
- 20:24I think there was just, there was just times on there though,
- 20:26like where you'd see him on the sideline, Drake May, you'd see
- 20:32him on the sideline and he just looked, he just looked lost.
- 20:36He just, it was almost as though he could see the game was done.
- 20:42And I think I think most people, and I know you can never count
- 20:45it out, can you? It's like we've had some amazing
- 20:46comebacks in the NFL and that's why we love the sport.
- 20:48But you could see from the get go from the first few drives,
- 20:52even though the score didn't reflect it, I think the first
- 20:55345 drives, it was like, yeah, this game's going to go exactly
- 20:59as everyone predicted. Seahawks are going to destroy
- 21:01them. And and that's going to be that.
- 21:03And you then wonder how much of that as well as the coaching
- 21:07team have done. Like, you know, we've sat here
- 21:09and sang variables praises. Josh McDaniels obviously is, is
- 21:13done really well with Drake May and I think he's made some
- 21:16really, it's not the same offence that he ran with Tom
- 21:18Brady. It's a different offence.
- 21:20He's he's playing to Drake May's strengths.
- 21:22You know, he's he's letting him scramble because he's a good
- 21:24scrambler. I think I heard a stat today or
- 21:27saw a stat that he's in fact, it might have been one of the
- 21:30commentators actually who said he's technically statistically
- 21:34the best scrambler in the NFL this year.
- 21:38Stats only tell you half of the story.
- 21:40Don't the book like that. They are, they've made a scheme
- 21:44around the players they've got, but it just felt like today they
- 21:48just didn't, not today, sorry, the Super Bowl, they didn't make
- 21:52those adjustments. They didn't change what they
- 21:56needed to change. Whereas the Seahawks absolutely
- 22:00neutralised the passing game of the Pats and that's what they've
- 22:05had and they, they, they absolutely smashed the life out
- 22:08of them. Ain't New England almost dealt
- 22:12their cards off the get go. You know, the D were were trying
- 22:18to make the big plays from the offset, but it was almost
- 22:22showing the Seahawks how they were trying to make those big
- 22:26plays. And I think that was almost out
- 22:28of an acceptance. It felt it felt like the Pats
- 22:31were went out there knowing the Seahawks were the better team
- 22:34and knowing they were going to probably win.
- 22:38You know, if we've been real about it.
- 22:40And they tried making those big plays from the get go and it
- 22:46kind of almost dealt dealt the cards off play one if you like.
- 22:51Whereas with the Seahawks, she kind of saw that composure in
- 22:54the forward planning. Like I think the first touchdown
- 22:58for the Seahawks. I saw the highlights of it
- 23:01yesterday. I didn't notice it at the time,
- 23:04I won't lie, but the the first touchdown of the Seahawks was an
- 23:08exact replica of the very first play of the game.
- 23:11It was like a a stretch play, an outside zone play to Walker and
- 23:18they ran it a few times just either side.
- 23:20And then the touchdown was the same stretch play but play
- 23:24action. And then the tight end was just
- 23:26a free release into the corner and it was just beautiful.
- 23:29And it's like. Were they planning to?
- 23:31Play one, it was beautiful. Perfectly scissor route, like I
- 23:35said, like a post in the corner with Titan seaman at the middle
- 23:38of them and it it will over to see.
- 23:40But on on the back of the Seattle defence side of things
- 23:43there and and and where where the the Seattle from again, from
- 23:48a from a fan's point of view from this where they kind of
- 23:51stopped us more than anything else was.
- 23:54I don't think the the coverage wasn't there throughout the
- 23:56entire you look at the camera behind the back be like a Drake
- 23:59May. So they were received open a lot
- 24:03of the time, but they're just bull rushed.
- 24:05And even though they didn't send blitzes, they manhandled.
- 24:09And again, I know I keep referring back to a lot of
- 24:11division to like a lot of brick balls.
- 24:13Just saying the kind of similarity and the stuff that
- 24:16myself and Brad have got with with brick ball and such.
- 24:19But if you ever go down to training and, and one of the
- 24:21coaches says, oh, you'd be great on offence or defensive line, a
- 24:24lot of people take that as like what you just called me fat.
- 24:27It's the most important position on the field.
- 24:29And that game there shows because the strength on that D
- 24:34line to get through the offensive line every single
- 24:38play. The fourth quarter that Seattle
- 24:40D line looked as fresher than in the first quarter.
- 24:42And that's how they won the Super Bowl.
- 24:44It's only I just can't. It pains me that I'm boasting
- 24:50and big enough a team that that destroyed the team that I love
- 24:54so much. What it happened and?
- 24:58Full disclaimer, I'm not calling anyone on the offensive or
- 25:01defensive line fat. Those words come out as Zack's
- 25:03mouth. Just just clarifying that one.
- 25:05No, but a lot of a lot of you know what I'm saying, A lot of
- 25:09people when you come down, you tell you tell you'd be great an
- 25:12offensive line and they just, they just look at American
- 25:15football and offensive lineman as the stereotypical guys when
- 25:18they don't realise what how difficult a position that is.
- 25:23It's the trenches, isn't it? They're like, they are the
- 25:25unsung heroes. Absolutely.
- 25:27Like our offensive line, like we, we've seen it, aren't we?
- 25:32In training we've seen it. We're talking Division two.
- 25:36We've seen it in training, we've seen it on games.
- 25:38Like when you've got your offensive line ticking you, you
- 25:42open up so many avenues like you can't win a game just passing
- 25:46the ball. You can't because then the
- 25:48defence will just play to the pass and you can't win a game
- 25:51just running if you've got no O line like it's vital.
- 25:56So the counter to that obviously is the D line.
- 25:58And I think you you absolutely saw that from the Hawks, didn't
- 26:01you? Like there's yeah, there's a
- 26:02start I've had written down here, which is nuts.
- 26:05Like so will Campbell, left tackle.
- 26:09He had the NFL worst fought allowed.
- 26:12Sorry, the NFL worst 14 pressures in the Super Bowl 14.
- 26:16Ridiculous isn't? It that's found a weak spot,
- 26:19they found a wait spot on that they they attacked it.
- 26:21Now talking about the D again about CRD and another swerve
- 26:28ball to brick ball here the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff,
- 26:32right? Who coaches the defence?
- 26:34Where's he from? Who did he coach?
- 26:37I tell you, he used to coach the London Warriors and so this is
- 26:41now a staple of how the bridge is now being kind of built
- 26:45because there was play. There's a player pathway
- 26:47programme for for, you know, international kids from like
- 26:51that America basically to try and get into the NFL.
- 26:56We've never really seen the coaching staff getting there.
- 26:59Now a coat now now an ex Brit ball coach, a British guy has
- 27:04won the Super Bowl. Now, if that don't inspire
- 27:12people that you, you just because you're in this country,
- 27:14you can't agree that is phenomenal like.
- 27:18You know what, this this really annoyed me last week because
- 27:21like, I'll give researcher Cal his his credit when he deserves
- 27:25it. And he actually dropped this
- 27:29into our sort of pre show chats that we have.
- 27:32And he actually mentioned this last week.
- 27:34And I'll be honest, I was completely oblivious to it.
- 27:37And, and I know you'd not mentioned it, Zach, either,
- 27:39whether you're aware or not, but Callum dropped that in and at
- 27:41the time of filming and recording the pod, it just
- 27:46completely passed me by and completely forgot to bring it up
- 27:48at all. And then I've seen nothing but
- 27:51from like NFLUK and all the British sort of media outlets
- 27:55and stuff and the US, to be fair, it was all on the the
- 27:57Super Bowl coverage, wasn't it like bigging him up and and they
- 27:59shared his success and it's mint.
- 28:01I'm glad they have because like, he deserves it, doesn't he?
- 28:05Like a. 100%. Brick ball team and and London
- 28:08Warriors have been dominant over the years like absolutely
- 28:12dominant. Obviously we've had another few
- 28:14teams sort of rise to their sort of level over the last five plus
- 28:19years, but it's it's been London Warriors for a long time and
- 28:25like it was just all over and credit where it's due, Cal
- 28:28research Cal, you've done your research and your knowledge
- 28:31there. I was kicking myself after like
- 28:34we didn't speak about it, but to bring it to your point, like
- 28:37it's it's absolutely massive, isn't it?
- 28:39It's huge for the British game and and there's some phenomenal
- 28:41coaches over here and some phenomenal players over here as
- 28:44well. And and for the fact that
- 28:46they're they're getting that recognition is massive and I
- 28:49think it's great. What I was what I was thinking
- 28:51about after is could this could this guy, and it's a tough one
- 28:55because the position is in, but could he ever, do you think he'd
- 28:59ever get a head coaching like opportunity?
- 29:01Because his name's gone massive now, hasn't it?
- 29:04And but he's kind of under McDonald's shadow a little bit.
- 29:08It's kind of. Thank you.
- 29:12Sorry, research was just interjecting.
- 29:16So he had interviews at Cleveland, so I wasn't aware of
- 29:18that. So, you know, maybe he will and
- 29:20maybe he'll be the first British head coach.
- 29:23You say he's under shadow. Isn't he?
- 29:25But. You say he's under the shadow at
- 29:27the moment and I and I get what you're saying, but look at the
- 29:30Seahawks now ex offensive coordinator.
- 29:34He's you know, Mike McDonald's got the big the main news over
- 29:39over the season regarding how how well the Seahawks have done.
- 29:42But you've got Clint Kubrak, who's just now officially
- 29:46announced that he's he's he's moving to the he's going to the
- 29:51Las Vegas Raiders. So, you know, just which baffles
- 29:56me because he's now going from a Super Bowl winning team to the
- 29:59Raiders. I get is for the head coaching
- 30:02role, but it just shows you why like, you know, anybody that
- 30:08team's got Seattle's gone from being a nobody team to be what
- 30:11they are in the space of a year pretty much because of the the
- 30:14highest of the maid and the two coaches that were there.
- 30:18I I think that the spot, I think, I think he doesn't put
- 30:20you in the shadows anymore. I think he kind of puts the
- 30:22spotlight on him a little bit more for them defensive minded
- 30:24organisations that need a team for people like him.
- 30:27And yeah. Maybe I mean the the danger, the
- 30:30danger is that it's kind of like I think that the most famous in
- 30:34recent years situation that is probably in it's like the the
- 30:39enemy and Andy Reid sort of thing.
- 30:40Isn't it like you've got an OC who's solid is liked by the
- 30:45players. He obviously does a lot of good
- 30:46work behind the scenes. But you, I know it's Andy Reid's
- 30:49offence and that's kind of what you've got.
- 30:50The Seahawks. I think the Kubiak higher is
- 30:54it's almost a replica but with a bit more grandeur now, isn't it?
- 30:57Of the Ben Johnson higher. You've got like the latest hot
- 31:01name, the hot property going with what you're going to assume
- 31:05is going to be Mendoza. You know, the 1st overall pick
- 31:09of for the Raiders, Sorry, they have Raiders have the 1st
- 31:13overall pick. You would assume that's going to
- 31:15be Mendoza at quarterback. It's going to be.
- 31:18So you what you probably hope in there and I think we touched on
- 31:21this last week is that it's going to be the Ben Johnson
- 31:24Chicago Bears sort of year where actually another team that
- 31:28probably over not overachieved but achieved ahead of
- 31:32expectations. I think everyone saw that leap
- 31:34with Ben Johnson and and Caleb but probably got further than
- 31:39they expected and maybe Raiders are hoping for the same sort of
- 31:43sort of outcome. But a big job for Kubiak, and
- 31:46probably well deserved, really do.
- 31:48You not, do you not find it a bit strange that he sort of
- 31:52announced it like at the, you know, the post game?
- 31:57I don't know, I liked it because he was asked, wasn't he was
- 31:59asked. It wasn't like he was just like,
- 32:01hey, guess what? So I can't, I can't quote it
- 32:05exactly, but they basically asked, you know, like, are you
- 32:08happy about the win? Because you know, you know,
- 32:10rumours have got it that you you're potentially going
- 32:12somewhere else. And he's like, yeah, yeah, I can
- 32:14confirm it basically. And I think most what I hate
- 32:18about the NFL is all the sort of hidden Incognito coach speak
- 32:24when it's clear as day. It's like it's obvious.
- 32:28It's clear. There's so many leaks in the
- 32:30sport. There's so many sources.
- 32:35Huge. Yeah, I mean, yeah, like Colin's
- 32:37got about 65,000 people who don't speak to him and one's
- 32:42lost. But no, it's he's, no, it's,
- 32:47it's like these sources have have got the links that they
- 32:49speak to in the media and it's obvious it's going there.
- 32:51So actually I quite like it that he was like, you know what,
- 32:54Yeah, I am going and I love this team and I love what we've
- 32:58achieved together and I am going.
- 33:00But I also hope to see him in Super Bowl next year, you know,
- 33:03against the Raiders. Obviously I'm highly doubtful,
- 33:05but who knows? You know, I don't think it's
- 33:08weird. I quite like it.
- 33:10So well done to them. Obviously good luck to Clinton
- 33:15in his in his future. And bravo to the I can never
- 33:19remember the guy's name from the London Warriors, but bravo to
- 33:22bravo to him for bridging that gap from from brick ball to the
- 33:25NFL. Aiden Aiden, dude, yeah, my bad
- 33:30on that one. Thank you.
- 33:31I see on that. But move back to the game now.
- 33:33I want to talk MVP with you a little bit because I think
- 33:37somebody got robbed of the MVP from the Super Bowl.
- 33:41And this is genuine. I think Jason Meyer should have
- 33:45got the MVP because for the the majority of the game, he was the
- 33:50one that kept his composure. And like, I know you've got down
- 33:54there, you've you've you've got the stashes on, on the screen
- 33:56right now. The longest were 41 yards, but
- 33:59I'm pretty sure out of the five that he made, four of them were
- 34:0233 plus yards, 35 plus yards. And the composure to know with
- 34:10how that game's going, you sell it games with the first kicks,
- 34:12the hardest kicks, you've got to get the points to the board.
- 34:14But every single time you go on that field, you're now you've
- 34:17seen that your offence is not moving, their offence is not
- 34:19moving. You're the one that's keeping
- 34:21this, this, this in. And, and the commentator said
- 34:24throughout the game, like, if this field go goes over now, I
- 34:26think you ought to make it were it 12 or Yeah, I think if we
- 34:31make 12, is that the game's going to be over because the
- 34:34Patriots will not be able to kind of keep up with just this
- 34:37like chipping away, chipping away, chipping away, chipping
- 34:40away, going for it. And I know it's a bit of AI
- 34:45might like a kicker getting the MVP.
- 34:47But this is when we brought back to the MVP the NFLMVP.
- 34:51He was the Most Valuable Player on that team throughout the
- 34:56majority and for the longest part of that game in my opinion
- 35:00because you can't give it to the full defence.
- 35:02So like it was. What's your view on the MVP side
- 35:07of things for this though? I'm torn.
- 35:10I'm torn because I completely agree to excuse me to a point.
- 35:16You know, he kicks 5 out of five, two points converge, 2 XP,
- 35:23you know, point convergence after a touchdown and so 17
- 35:26points in total. But even without those two
- 35:29touchdowns, he'd have been on 15 points which outscored,
- 35:31outscored the Patriots. So that is still 1.
- 35:35You know, he alone outscored the Patriots.
- 35:37But I think it does come down to that complete game that I talked
- 35:42about earlier, like Kenneth Walker, he didn't have the
- 35:47headline stats in terms of the touchdowns and things like that.
- 35:50But he had a game mate. He did like he had some big runs
- 35:55and he's he's so composed behind the O line.
- 36:00He's so slow behind the line. Yeah, yeah, he is, isn't he?
- 36:08Like he's just steady, steady, steady.
- 36:11And then that explosion out of the gates when he sees that gap
- 36:14and it and it's what we it's what we try and coach ourselves,
- 36:17don't we? With the running backs is like,
- 36:19you know, slow, slow, slow. And then you see the gap and you
- 36:21hit it, you know, put it in simple terms.
- 36:23And you don't always see that because not everyone has the
- 36:27skill set to do that. They don't have that like
- 36:31explosion out of the gates, that one step and bang, you are gone.
- 36:34That acceleration. And he's just, so I said the
- 36:38word about a million Times Now, but he's so explosive as a
- 36:40player. You're right, I saw the video.
- 36:44Myers and he put them into that position.
- 36:46Yeah, yeah. And I don't, I'm not angry about
- 36:50the fact that he got it because he played Unreal.
- 36:52And I just, I think that game, like you say, he outscored, he
- 36:56outscored the Patriots alone. And that that for me is what
- 37:00kept him. But going back to Kenneth
- 37:02Walker, saw a video circle at an X and it was Leven Bell and
- 37:07Kenneth Walker doing the exact same run where they hold back,
- 37:10they hold back, they hold back, they wait for the gap to open
- 37:12and boom, they're straight through it.
- 37:13And it is, it's textbook slow to the hole and fast through it
- 37:17like it is, it is textbook running back.
- 37:19And we go back to what we talked about with the Seahawks.
- 37:23You say they've got the complete package.
- 37:25You know, in that fourth quarter, I agree with you fully
- 37:28and that's it. In the most third quarter I
- 37:29agree with fully, but they showed aspects of perfection
- 37:34everywhere on the field. RC just coming with another
- 37:36great start here. Speaking of like the
- 37:38international game and and bridging that gap over.
- 37:40It's a big old bridges this light, but the the punter
- 37:45Michael Dixon Australian guy punts inside the 10 punts inside
- 37:50the 10 yard line, 2 inside the five yard line.
- 37:52He's Australian coming in to do this as well.
- 37:54So he got the aspects of the game I'm going to beat, beat the
- 37:57special teams from once again that winning the games for him.
- 38:00The pinning the Patriots back to the the Patriots couldn't do
- 38:03anything if they were on the Seahawks 1 yard line, like never
- 38:06mind their own 1 yard line and the pinning them back to there
- 38:09and then moving up field, the scoring field goes the moving
- 38:12the running the ball well, the defence is unstoppable.
- 38:14Like JSM went out of the game for, I mean, he did go in the
- 38:18blue tent, but I can't really remember JSN making any sort of
- 38:23impact on the game when he were in the game and when he were out
- 38:25of the game, he was locked down. So then they they changed and
- 38:29they looked around and then they had they adapted, which where
- 38:32the Patriots didn't they adapted to.
- 38:34OK, well, if you're going to quadruple team JSN and make him
- 38:37make our number one target not available, which give the ball
- 38:4127 times Kenneth Walker for him to run and grind the yards,
- 38:44grind the yards. And then when we get within
- 38:46scoring range, our chip shot a field goal over because I know
- 38:49you're not going to score against it does.
- 38:51And it was that package. It was had complete and well
- 38:54deserved. Like what it was well deserved.
- 38:57Carl just coming there with it with the actual stats.
- 39:00One kick, 11 field goal out of them for was under 30 yards.
- 39:06So they're not tough. They're not easy kicks to make,
- 39:09especially with the pressure of what it I mean, I imagine they
- 39:11got easier and easier with the game got out.
- 39:13But like especially the first couple.
- 39:15But yeah, I mean, All in all, one of them games the better
- 39:20team won and we're right on now and see how our offseason goes,
- 39:25really. I think, I think for parts it's
- 39:29that like we said, they're a year ahead out there.
- 39:32Yeah. And I think for them next year
- 39:35and I'm not trying to bring up the schedule here as a as like a
- 39:39dig. I'm all looking ahead is that's
- 39:41the that's the thing that's been hanging over the head.
- 39:43I know I've hammered it, so I've intentionally not mentioned it
- 39:46today. I'll be honest.
- 39:47But I'm bringing it up now because I think for the Pats,
- 39:49it's what happens next year because they're in a position
- 39:52now where they reached the Super Bowl.
- 39:56They've got gaps, they have got holes on the team.
- 39:58They need to fill that. They need to recruit well.
- 40:00They need to draft well. You know, I think they've
- 40:03drafted well and recruited well this year, but they're a young
- 40:06team. And they need to continue that.
- 40:10So they've got an advantage there where people are probably
- 40:13more likely to sign with them because of the success they've
- 40:15had. But they've had, as we know, the
- 40:18easiest schedule this year, but next year they've got, well, we
- 40:22don't know what schedule they've got, but they've got a first
- 40:25place schedule, haven't they? Because of the way the
- 40:27scheduling works so far for those that aren't avid NFL fans
- 40:32and and the schedule is probably one of the more complex parts of
- 40:35the game. Because they finished first,
- 40:39they will now play first placed teams from the other divisions.
- 40:45So they play their own division twice and they'll play a
- 40:48division from the NFC, but then they'll also play the first
- 40:51place teams from other divisions.
- 40:52So that's kind of what makes up their schedule.
- 40:55But we know in the NFL teams change year on year.
- 40:57And I think one thing that might play in the Pats favour this
- 41:01year is that the the NFL was just all over the place this
- 41:04year. It's been a really good year
- 41:06actually for the NFL, like as a new, yeah, it's been really
- 41:10good. It's been, it's been, it's been
- 41:11a really good season. And it's a shame about the Super
- 41:14Bowl, you know, I'll be honest. But I think if you look at the
- 41:17last 5-10 years more probably how many Super Bowls are the
- 41:24best game of the season? It's very rare.
- 41:27Championship weekend and your divisional weekend are the
- 41:30better games, don't you? I joked about last week it was
- 41:33the Ramsey Hawks that was one of the better games this year.
- 41:38That was the Super Bowl. But I think for the Pats, it's
- 41:42recruit well and try and maintain this sort of a lot of
- 41:47cap space. Pro.
- 41:50Yeah, yeah, it'll it'll be interesting to see what they do
- 41:53with it for sure. And they've got a really
- 41:55winnable division. Dolphins and Jets are shambles
- 41:59constantly. Bills are obviously the team to
- 42:02be in the division with Josh Allen and but like, they've just
- 42:06done it. So go out and do it again, see
- 42:10how it's been interesting to see what happens next with with
- 42:12Donald and and the squad really, because he's shown he can do it
- 42:17now hasn't he? Yeah, let's go see if we get
- 42:19back-to-back, but we've got just just.
- 42:22Before we do sort of move on to anything, we've not really spoke
- 42:25about Donald, have we? Like I've just, I've just
- 42:28realised, like we haven't. I don't think Donald had the
- 42:31best game of his career. I thought, I thought I genuinely
- 42:35and I'm just, I think he played all right.
- 42:38I think he was. I think the rest of his team
- 42:40just played better, as daft as that sounds.
- 42:44I don't think it was his best game this year, but I think I
- 42:48did mention him earlier in terms of like he had moments where he
- 42:50was able to step and evade and he was just composed.
- 42:55But I mean, we can't do a Super Bowl review without
- 42:59acknowledging, and we've touched on it in previous pods, but we
- 43:01can't not acknowledge the fact that he's gone from The Jets
- 43:05scene ghosts. And then he's been on, what is
- 43:07it, 5 teams he's been on. And you know, last year he had
- 43:11the year he had with the Vikings where really, let's be honest,
- 43:14they should have kept him, but they didn't because of JJ Jesus
- 43:19and oh God, yeah. But like, he's gone to the
- 43:22Seahawks and he's had an absolutely fantastic year and
- 43:30you've just, you know, he's never going to listen to this.
- 43:33But like, fair play mate, well done.
- 43:35Yeah, well done. Unbelievable.
- 43:39If you, if you listen to this, by the way, guys are not
- 43:41watching it. You want to see some of the
- 43:42stats from the Super Bowl? We've got them on screen now go
- 43:44check out his YouTube channel or on Spotify.
- 43:46We have got a video available there.
- 43:48All of the pods that we record have got a video to go with them
- 43:52with all the stats on screen, so it's a bit easy to follow if we
- 43:54are talking a lot, a lot of numbers.
- 43:56That's just on YouTube. All balls No Philtre podcast and
- 43:59everywhere else is at ABNF pod. You can see all the stats there.
- 44:03You mentioned that this weren't a great Super Bowl in terms of
- 44:07excitement and just like Super Bowls normally aren't, I knew
- 44:10this were going to be one of these types of Super Bowls as
- 44:12soon as the half time show was announced.
- 44:16Let's talk Bad Bunny because quite honestly, I've never
- 44:22wanted to turn. I've never wanted to put
- 44:23EastEnders on as much in my life as when when our time show came
- 44:27on, I think it was I, I didn't, I didn't dig it.
- 44:33I didn't dig the half time show. I'm just going to put that out
- 44:37there. What we all view on the half
- 44:41time show. Did you, did you listen to it
- 44:43more than anything else, like? Yeah, I did.
- 44:46I did. And just because of my, my full
- 44:50time job, which we won't go into, I have rewatched it a
- 44:53couple of times and I'm so torn with it.
- 45:00Like it's I didn't like it. I didn't like it personally, I
- 45:06didn't. And I've not really loved loads
- 45:11of the last decade, particularly not the last five years I think.
- 45:16Yeah, Kendrick would all die last year.
- 45:18It would all die. It was all.
- 45:20Right, It was all right. I mean, Shakur and Jayla was
- 45:23absolutely the best recent one that I.
- 45:25Don't know why. Why would you say that, eh?
- 45:28I wonder. But I think, I think Jay-Z
- 45:31dropped a ball. I think he's I think he's trying
- 45:33to he's too hip hoppy. It was always going to be too
- 45:37hip when when they like when we Snoop Dogg and Eminem and all
- 45:39that that were a decent woman that were a few years, but now
- 45:41one. That was a good one.
- 45:43That was a good one. Better ones to be.
- 45:44Fair, that was nostalgia. And then now it's going down the
- 45:47line of, you know, the Kendrick one.
- 45:51Jay-Z has to realise that the Super Bowl is not just watched
- 45:54by 16 year old kids, you know, And when, when, when you have
- 46:00the bands on them like their Green Day opening right about
- 46:04doing the opening. For me, Green Heads are a far
- 46:06better half time show. But that's just personal
- 46:08preference and Music Choice. I don't want to see, I want to
- 46:11be able to. I want to be, I'm normally
- 46:13steaming by half time, right? Super Bowl is my World Cup, I'm
- 46:18normally steaming by half time. I want to be jiving away,
- 46:21singing along and dancing along to the songs that are getting
- 46:24played at half time and having a good old laugh and being like,
- 46:26wow, this is like when Michael Jackson did it back in day.
- 46:30It was it was a spectacle to watch and to be a part of like,
- 46:35wow, this is amazing. And I remember looking up at the
- 46:38screen and just seeing loads of bushes walking onto onto the
- 46:41field. I'm like, what am I watching
- 46:43here? You know the estimated 120 a 120
- 46:49million people watch this, right?
- 46:52Some people are actually going as far as 135 now.
- 46:56Look, I'm not, there's a lot of, there's a lot of grey area with
- 47:01this and a lot of people like, you know, people aren't liking
- 47:04it for certain reasons because of things that are going on
- 47:06within the USA at this moment in time.
- 47:08That's got nothing to do with me.
- 47:10I've got nothing to do with anything, any of my views.
- 47:13I just thought it was shit that that's that for me.
- 47:17Yeah, it it wasn't great. It wasn't great.
- 47:20I do think Gaga was mint. I thought she was brilliant in
- 47:23her little cameo. I mean, Gaga's phenomenal.
- 47:27She is an absolute artist whether you're into her or not.
- 47:30Like she's a songwriter and she can perform.
- 47:33She can absolutely wail a tune cart.
- 47:36She she's brilliant. But I think like what you're
- 47:40going on to in terms of like, you know, you want to be able to
- 47:43get into it. I completely agree.
- 47:44Like, I made a joke about Shakira and Jlo and like, for
- 47:48obvious reasons, Like I remember that we were at a Super Bowl
- 47:51party together and the the absolute whole venue went nuts
- 47:55when Shakira did a little tongue waggle to the mic.
- 47:58But but you're right though, those songs, both of their
- 48:00songs, they're like ones that you just like want to drive to
- 48:02and you like get behind and stuff.
- 48:05I even thought the I thought the weekend was good.
- 48:08Was he 20? I mean, what was he, 2020?
- 48:11One when he was. COVID wasn't it.
- 48:13It was the COVID. 1/20/21 Yeah. I thought the weekend was good
- 48:18and and like considering there's no like real option there for
- 48:23or, or limited options because of the situation.
- 48:26Bruno Mars was phenomenal back in the sort of early teens.
- 48:30There's just been some absolutely outstanding
- 48:33performance. But I just think I think you're
- 48:34right. I think since Jay-Z and Apple
- 48:37Music officially have have got involved, it's just been, it's
- 48:41been very with Jay-Z and you. Yeah.
- 48:47And yeah, and, and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 48:49And I think you've got to go with the mainstream.
- 48:52Like when you're talking about some of the big performance,
- 48:55like if we were to talk about the big half time performances,
- 48:58a lot of them are back when, well, music's evolved, doesn't
- 49:01it continues to evolve. But I think this one was just a
- 49:05bit, it wasn't great. I think it was probably too
- 49:08political. I think you know it was.
- 49:11Last two years ago that's. Been it wasn't entirely Spanish,
- 49:14was it that the the vast majority of was Spanish,
- 49:17Japanese, Puerto Rican, I believe so I and there's the
- 49:23whole thing with Trump, which we won't get into.
- 49:25Like I know enough about it, but I don't pretend to fully know
- 49:29the insurance and outs of it. But I know there was like almost
- 49:32an anti and there are year on year.
- 49:35To be fair, there's alternative half time shows on and I know
- 49:38Trump's quite publicly said, you know, he's not interested in the
- 49:42NFL at the Super Bowl this year because Bad Bun is performing.
- 49:45And I almost think the whole full Spanish set was almost a
- 49:49response to that personally. But I don't like that.
- 49:53But I, I think that as much as I like it, like I love languages,
- 50:00you know, I'm, I'm a duolingerer trying to develop my Spanish
- 50:04myself. But like I I almost feel like
- 50:07that alienated for a lot of people as well.
- 50:10Yeah, I feel like it's just. Me, I don't know.
- 50:13I'm not going to get into, no, I'm not sort of getting into the
- 50:15politics behind it, but it's, it's just one of those really.
- 50:19No, like speaking from the the the language point of view, I
- 50:22just want to kind of jump with it and jive with it and have
- 50:25some fun with it. And they said the political side
- 50:27of things to get not touched into this, but last year, the
- 50:29whole Kendrick Drake beef, that was the far front of the
- 50:31Kendrick Lamar performance. And I just feel like I feel
- 50:36like, again, for a personal choice, there's bigger and
- 50:39better artists out there. You could have put any of the
- 50:42top five country artists that that that which that music genre
- 50:45is all has always been bigger in America, obviously, but it's
- 50:47taken over the world. It's probably the most popular
- 50:50music genre at this moment in time.
- 50:53Would have done a better show than what's going on there now.
- 50:56Look, I understand that that's a biassed choice from someone like
- 51:00myself who likes that type of music.
- 51:02But at the same time, I like hip hop.
- 51:04I like rap music, but yeah, and I was one of the only people
- 51:08last year in the in the pub when I've been with our Super Bowl
- 51:10part that I actually really enjoyed Kendrick's because I
- 51:13enjoy Kendrick Lamar's music. But I don't think Kendrick Lamar
- 51:17is a Super Bowl half time performer.
- 51:21I just, I don't say it was like if you put A$AP Rocky in there,
- 51:24they're great to listen to, but they're just not, they're not,
- 51:27oh, let's sing along together. You want people to sing along
- 51:30with you. People aren't going to say a lot
- 51:33of the words that are involved in these songs.
- 51:34So yeah, look, not for me. There was there was one cool
- 51:40thing though, Zach, I don't, I don't know if you've, you've
- 51:42seen this. I I didn't realise at the time,
- 51:45obviously, as you wouldn't, but did you see the bit where there
- 51:47was the wedding happening in like scenes and stuff?
- 51:53So by all accounts, that was actually, and I don't know how
- 51:57real this is, how true this is, but by all accounts, it was
- 51:59actually a genuine real wedding basically taking place.
- 52:02So apparently, and I'm sure this might come out in the washed, I
- 52:05don't know, but apparently this is a real, genuine couple who,
- 52:09you know, you hear about couples inviting celebrities to their
- 52:11wedding and then suddenly they like turn up.
- 52:14Apparently they'd invited Bad Bunny to their wedding and they
- 52:17basically got back in touch and said, I'll do you one better.
- 52:19What about you get married at the Super Bowl?
- 52:21And it was like a genuine actual wedding within the production.
- 52:26Now, I don't know what the legalities around that are.
- 52:28I don't know, but I thought that was quite like, you know, the
- 52:31production. Side.
- 52:32Of it I do like I like the production of the Super Bowl
- 52:36half time shows whether I like the music or not.
- 52:39So I'm always quite intrigued by that.
- 52:40Like the dancing trees thing was weird, but like the production
- 52:45was quite cute and they had a lot of celebrities in there,
- 52:48which I'm not asked about, but it's quite interesting to see a
- 52:51few certain names in there. Ricky Martin being a great one
- 52:55for me. But they.
- 52:58Yeah, to have that little wedding appearing in there as
- 53:00well. It was kind of like once you
- 53:02know that I say no, once you hear about the suggested
- 53:07narrative behind it, it's quite cute.
- 53:08But yeah, I hope they go for a change next year.
- 53:11But that's just, I guess it's just our opinion our our
- 53:14preference, but it was a bit of. A weird.
- 53:15That's it, that's it. But that's that's a super
- 53:18halftime show coup and that's the Super Bowl itself.
- 53:20You got anything you want to say before we move on to other parts
- 53:23of the pod, mate regarding the Super Bowl?
- 53:29No, no, I think it's, it's not one that's going to go down in
- 53:34history in terms of or it's not going to stick in the memory, is
- 53:38it? But I they're always a nice
- 53:41spectacle, spectacle. But yeah, I think, but it is
- 53:45what it is and we've probably covered it.
- 53:47Yeah, that was super Super Bowl 60.
- 53:50And yeah, want to want to forget from a Patriots point of view,
- 53:54we're going to move on now and we're going to move on to a
- 53:56little bit of a NEWS UPDATE from this week.
- 53:59Not much major news that we haven't already covered.
- 54:01We've already covered the the Quebec moving to to to the Las
- 54:06Vegas Raiders story, but there is another story coming from the
- 54:10Atlanta Falcons. Falcons rookie James Pace junior
- 54:14has been arrested in Florida on February 7th after what police
- 54:18have described as a domestic dispute against the WNBA player
- 54:22Ricky Jackson. Now, when will, when will
- 54:27rookies, when will NFL players just learn like?
- 54:34It's it's so bizarre, like I don't it's not even just
- 54:38rookies. Is it like it's I mean, there
- 54:41must be something in terms of the money side of things or the
- 54:47fact that I mean, when The thing is we never know, like the full
- 54:51insurance and outs of the history in the background of
- 54:53these people that are playing the game.
- 54:55And it's I'm sure a lot of them come from actually really sort
- 55:00of to I mean, I'm not talking about James Pierce Junior.
- 55:03I know nothing about his background.
- 55:05I won't pretend to, you know, it's, it just feels like the NFL
- 55:10seems to have more people in the sport who are causing carnage,
- 55:18basically, whether it's. Get arrested.
- 55:20Driving incidents, murder charges, robbery charges, you
- 55:25name it and it. And it's not just a recent thing
- 55:28that's gone on for a long time, but it just seems like the NFL
- 55:31is prevalent with it and. Yeah.
- 55:34Get it? There's another one.
- 55:36Research Club. Why would you talk about this?
- 55:38There's another one, right? And do you know what?
- 55:39I don't know why I'm not going down.
- 55:41A player's been shot in the ankle today as well or, or, or
- 55:44yesterday shot in the ankle. And I can't lie for me who it
- 55:47was and one of the ones I saw while passing like, and they get
- 55:52into these into these positions and just ask if you just just
- 55:56find that out that find that story out for me, right quick
- 55:58glam. And I'm just throwing a I'm
- 56:01putting my tin foil hat on here and I'm throwing a big
- 56:04conspiracy theory out that I think in 10 to 15 years time,
- 56:07there's going to be 49ers. The defensive lineman Keon White
- 56:12shot in the ankle from a dispute that happened when we were out
- 56:14and about Wild. I think this were his fault.
- 56:17I think you are He weren't like we have anything to do with it
- 56:22in the crossfire. But I I think in 10 to 15 years
- 56:27time, there's going to be a story break.
- 56:31That was a bit of supplement that NFL players have been
- 56:34taking that's legal. Like as in I'm not talking a pet
- 56:39or anything, but like some sort of something that goes into
- 56:43protein shakes or whatever because there has to be
- 56:46something. What's the difference between
- 56:49NFL and other sports where you get in the sheer amount of
- 56:52people making daft? Like there's money in other
- 56:54sports as well. There's young lads with money in
- 56:56other sports as well. I understand upbringing is
- 56:58probably a major thing, but these coaches that have such a
- 57:04big impact on these kids lives from day one, you know, should
- 57:09we can try and stay in bed and yes money is money, but I.
- 57:13Think it's difficult, isn't it? Because like look at the size of
- 57:17the teams as well. So like there's 32 teams,
- 57:20there's 53 players on a squad at any one time, plus practise
- 57:24squad, plus people who've been caught and been waved and all
- 57:28this, that and the other. Like when you actually work out
- 57:30the math on that, that's a lot of players.
- 57:32You're talking about 1500 players plus.
- 57:35So is there any other sport that has that many players in the
- 57:39league? I mean, I don't know this for a
- 57:43fact, but I'd probably guess at not.
- 57:45Or if there is probably not as close or if there is not as many
- 57:49with the money that they will be getting.
- 57:52But it's just barmy. It's absolutely barmy.
- 57:57You know, just to sort of it is, and I mean, look to look at
- 58:01what's actually happened with James Pierce Junior.
- 58:03So apparently there's been some domestic situation and the
- 58:09rumours are then it's it's sort of resulted in a police chase.
- 58:13Pierce's vehicle's being crashed.
- 58:16I've seen rumours on X that he's actually like repeatedly smashed
- 58:19it into Ricky's Jackson's car. Whether that's true or not, I
- 58:23don't know. It's it's Twitter, it's X.
- 58:25You hear all sorts, don't you? But apparently he's charged now
- 58:30with, I'm just reading this now, aggravated battery with a deadly
- 58:34weapon, aggravated stalking, aggravated battery of a law
- 58:40enforcement officer, fleeing police and resisting arrest, and
- 58:47apparently protective orders then also issued requiring him
- 58:49to stay away from Jackson. And it's it's just not because
- 58:53he's had an absolutely stonking year with the Falcons and he
- 58:58finished third in defensive rookie of rookie of the year
- 59:01voting. So it's like he's got all the
- 59:04potential ahead of him. So what's happened other than
- 59:07conspiracies with Zach? What's happened to result in him
- 59:13doing this? I mean, I'm sure we won't know,
- 59:15but we just hear of it too often.
- 59:16And it's it's a bit of a sad part of the sport.
- 59:20Like she, it's. He can't.
- 59:22He can't even say drugs though. He can't even say drugs can get
- 59:24drug tested all the time like he used to have.
- 59:26Like remember like Josh Gordon, he's get drug tested all the
- 59:29time and fail him all the time and get suspended all the time.
- 59:31So they get drug tested quite a bit.
- 59:33So what happens and why does it happen like that?
- 59:35That James Pace junior just said bye, bye to his career, but he's
- 59:39just said bye to his career because look at what's happened
- 59:42in the past when people have done silly things in cars, you
- 59:45know, they end up in gaol and the organisations aren't going
- 59:48to stand for anymore because there's too many people that
- 59:50can, you know, they don't want that baggage.
- 59:54They don't want that baggage, right?
- 59:56It's a shame to see. It's it's sad to see.
- 59:58But you know what it's It's an interesting one.
- 1:00:00Though, because the NFL are are kind of, they're also a bit
- 1:00:04backwards with that though, aren't they?
- 1:00:05They don't want the baggage. But there's also a lot of teams
- 1:00:08out there that have been really open to defend players who are
- 1:00:12quite clearly guilty of things. And it's innocent before proven
- 1:00:16guilty. It's only when you get the
- 1:00:17evidence that comes out that they're then like, Oh yes, we
- 1:00:21probably shouldn't stand by this guy.
- 1:00:24I mean, let's not get too deep into it because we'll be here
- 1:00:26all night with the the dramas. And stuff.
- 1:00:28So I'm going to. Start, but yeah.
- 1:00:31Yeah, it's an ongoing story that we can that we can catch up on,
- 1:00:35we can catch up on and we'll keep and we'll keep you guys
- 1:00:37informed when we do get to it. But that's the news, the main
- 1:00:42news from the week over than what we've gone through.
- 1:00:44I don't think we've missed much of probably have done.
- 1:00:46If we have, let us know in the comments, call us out.
- 1:00:48What have we missed? Let us know in the comments
- 1:00:50whenever you listen to this or over on social medias at ABNF
- 1:00:54Pod. But Brad, it's now time for one
- 1:01:00of our favourite segments of the week.
- 1:01:02All other balls. Brad, tell us what it's about.
- 1:01:06Well, yeah. I absolutely will.
- 1:01:10So all of the balls is the segment where we touch on where
- 1:01:15we touch other balls. It's the segment where we we
- 1:01:19pick up on other elements of the world of sport.
- 1:01:21So the intention when we started this pod was to look at other
- 1:01:25ball sports. But realistically we've found
- 1:01:27out that most of the ball sports aren't that interesting.
- 1:01:29So we touch on all of the balls, all of the sports rather, and
- 1:01:34this week we'll be diving into the Winter Olympics, which have
- 1:01:39started recently this year in old Italy I believe, and we'll
- 1:01:45touch on the world of rugby league close to our hearts.
- 1:01:48Back there going back to the to the old rugby league and now got
- 1:01:53a few got a few honourable mentions afterwards as well.
- 1:01:55It's not just two this week. We've got a little honourable
- 1:01:56mention towards the back end of it, but we'll keep you a little
- 1:01:58tease there if I will keep you into it.
- 1:02:00Winter Olympics now I watch, I watch curling once every four
- 1:02:07years and I get invested in curling once every four years to
- 1:02:13the point where I that it's the only time I sweep my house once
- 1:02:17every four years when I'm practising for the next Winter
- 1:02:19Olympics. What a sport that is.
- 1:02:21By the way, you don't sweep your house now the the Winter
- 1:02:29Olympics of there's one major kind of storyline coming out of
- 1:02:32this moment in time. We'll touch on the on the on the
- 1:02:34the table soon and about how well Great Britain are doing.
- 1:02:40But there's one major, major story and that's really that's
- 1:02:45about a thought. Is it a 41 year old downhill
- 1:02:49skier skier skier? Yeah.
- 1:02:53Is it the slower that she does? I'm not.
- 1:02:55I'm not too clued up with with like the all.
- 1:02:59I just like curling and a few of the other bits and batsmen like
- 1:03:01the bobsleigh stuff. But like so go on leaders with
- 1:03:06this one, Brad. Yeah.
- 1:03:08So this it's Lindsey Vonn. So she is an American skier, I
- 1:03:14believe. And she, she retired in 2019 but
- 1:03:19came back, I nearly said last year then, but she sort of
- 1:03:22returned in 2024, yes. So she's 41, really, really well
- 1:03:28well known skier. She actually won gold in
- 1:03:33Vancouver in the 2010 Games and it's just been, it was really
- 1:03:38sad and horrible to see. So I'm not skiing myself, but I
- 1:03:41do snowboard to a point I guess. So I do get quite not invested.
- 1:03:48But I do enjoy a lot of the aspects of Winter Olympics,
- 1:03:52probably more than I do the Summer Olympics to be honest.
- 1:03:55But the bit that gets me. So if you've not seen the
- 1:03:58footage, if you've not heard about it, which I'd be surprised
- 1:04:00if you haven't, she, she had a big crash 13 seconds into her,
- 1:04:05her race, her, her stint, if you like, Obviously they go down one
- 1:04:08at a time, don't they? She, she hit a gate and she, she
- 1:04:12broke a leg and she was airlifted off the slope.
- 1:04:15It was quite sad to see. The the thing that got me.
- 1:04:19This is the weird thing that got me is that only 9 days before
- 1:04:25she'd actually apparently torn her ACL with in like a warm up
- 1:04:30race. Which I just I can't fathom in
- 1:04:33my head because like we know obviously this is mostly an NFL
- 1:04:38pod and we know how devastating Acls can be.
- 1:04:42We've witnessed it with friends ourselves with the Acls.
- 1:04:46I've had knee injuries in the past myself and to think of
- 1:04:49skiing or snowboarding like with an ACL tear, I can't actually
- 1:04:55fathom out how it's doable. So I'm a bit, I'm a bit torn
- 1:05:00with this because it's a bit like it's heartbreaking to see,
- 1:05:02but I'm almost like I have you got a death wish.
- 1:05:05Like what is it? Yeah, so I ski.
- 1:05:08I know you snowballed. I ski.
- 1:05:10I ski for a long time and I haven't been for a while but I
- 1:05:14know how impactful it can be on your knees if.
- 1:05:16You just use like the little blades, you know them really
- 1:05:18short ones. Why would a six foot five guy do
- 1:05:21that? Right?
- 1:05:23What what do you mean? Why would a six year?
- 1:05:26It's way too small for me. So I know how impactful it could
- 1:05:32be on your knees right. And I look not calling anybody
- 1:05:39for false information. I don't understand how she's got
- 1:05:42on. She's got on the ski and she's
- 1:05:43going doing downhill in nine days.
- 1:05:45That's tearing ratio. Don't get it, but I don't I
- 1:05:47don't buy it For the for one, it's sad to see what's happened.
- 1:05:50I really feel for it and I don't, I don't disagree that
- 1:05:53she's her knee, but an ACL tear 9 days later, she's downhill
- 1:05:57skiing. I don't know.
- 1:06:01I'm calling, calling a little bit on that one.
- 1:06:03If I were you, maybe maybe a bit of a media or just build up the
- 1:06:08anticipation, the viewership, you know, get some, get some
- 1:06:11traction on this and let this go.
- 1:06:13I could be wrong, but like 9 days we could bring any of our
- 1:06:17friends at that ACLS and go in nine days later.
- 1:06:19You're going downhill skiing for your country?
- 1:06:21I don't think so. Yeah, it's a messed up one.
- 1:06:24That isn't it. It's it's yeah.
- 1:06:25But I mean, you feel for her either way.
- 1:06:27Like she's had a success. It's her fifth games, I believe.
- 1:06:31You know, I don't think it's awful as we start to get older
- 1:06:36ourselves. Like you don't think as 41 has
- 1:06:38been mega old. But I guess for an athlete
- 1:06:40performing at the peak, it is really, isn't it like not old,
- 1:06:44but it's hard to maintain your peak at that age.
- 1:06:47We've seen it in the NFL. But you know, the odds are
- 1:06:50against you aren't there. So credit to her for giving it a
- 1:06:52good a goodwill, but it just didn't work out.
- 1:06:54But and there's two other stories that really sort of
- 1:06:58caught my eye. The first one so talking about
- 1:07:02skiing this, did you see this report those ski jumpers that
- 1:07:07were apparently injecting their penises before being fitted with
- 1:07:13their suits. So in essence, like if you think
- 1:07:16of like their little bulge, Polk it out or their ski suits
- 1:07:20because they're like super tight are they're injecting them.
- 1:07:24Yeah. But like apparently it sort of
- 1:07:26made them I guess swell a little bit.
- 1:07:29So it created like a smoother or a larger like just improved the
- 1:07:34surface area. So imagine like a little bulge
- 1:07:37and then if it flattens out a bit or.
- 1:07:39What certain? What's the?
- 1:07:41What's the injection called? Just asking for a friend.
- 1:07:47Research Carl will let you know that one is is well acquainted
- 1:07:50with those injections, but like apparently it was just like
- 1:07:54helping them gain extra distance on the jumpers, which just it
- 1:07:58really, really tickled me. That's wild.
- 1:08:00But I mean, yeah, but I mean on the topic of penises, I don't
- 1:08:04know if you saw this, but Jura Leyden won gold for Holland in
- 1:08:09the women's 1000 metre speed skating, which two reasons I
- 1:08:15mentioned penises, one I won't. I just want to say the other is
- 1:08:17where you going? Where you going this one?
- 1:08:20Two reasons, One I won't mention, but the other talk of
- 1:08:23penises is that she's actually the fiance of Jake Paul.
- 1:08:28So. Did you see that video?
- 1:08:31I did, yeah. I mean, yeah.
- 1:08:33It's like unreal athlete. Unreal athlete.
- 1:08:38Yeah, yeah, I've watched the, I've watched her a lot, numerous
- 1:08:43times just to for research purposes only to watch it
- 1:08:46numerous times. But but it pans to Jake Paul,
- 1:08:52and he's crying. And I say crying in quotation
- 1:08:55marks because that is the most Disney acting crying I think
- 1:08:59I've ever seen in my life. Not a single.
- 1:09:01Yeah. He's good at that, isn't he?
- 1:09:02Like he's, it's like his whole career is based on acting.
- 1:09:05Like he started on YouTube, he went to boxing.
- 1:09:09Acts out on Disney. Now he's on Disney Channel.
- 1:09:12Yeah, of course he was. Yeah.
- 1:09:14Yeah, the both were wild. Wild for me, but yeah, Jake
- 1:09:21Paul, guess where. What a can he?
- 1:09:25He gets where? What a can.
- 1:09:27But the Olympics tables so far, I believe that I'm open.
- 1:09:31This is updated correctly. Norway. 6 golds, 1 silver, 4
- 1:09:35bronze. Top of the total medal table at
- 1:09:38this moment in time with 11, so good for them.
- 1:09:41I can't see Team GB on this list, so they must have 12 and
- 1:09:45we must have missed them off right.
- 1:09:51Oh, we have a bit of a technical issue there.
- 1:09:57Has Brad left? Brad has been kicked off the the
- 1:10:02podcast. He'll be back.
- 1:10:03Injustice A we are is coming back.
- 1:10:08Hello. You've you've got the teams that
- 1:10:10are sort of leading the charge that you'd expect to on the
- 1:10:14Winter Olympics. You've got, you know, you
- 1:10:15Norways, Switzerland's up there, your Austrias, your your
- 1:10:19Germanys, Italy, those obvious ones that live where you ski and
- 1:10:24states are up there. But you know, GB not doing so
- 1:10:30well. They lost 53 to Italy in the
- 1:10:32bronze medal match in curling, which would have been the first
- 1:10:35medal. And they missed out narrowly on
- 1:10:37the women's snowboarding big air final.
- 1:10:40So Mia Brooks just missing out on the medals there.
- 1:10:44And then my my favourite events which have only been in I think
- 1:10:49maybe the last two Winter Olympics is the slopestyle.
- 1:10:54So the slopestyle is essentially what you really watch skiing and
- 1:10:58snowboarding for. It's the big jumps with the cool
- 1:11:01tricks. That's slopestyle, and they get
- 1:11:03points on that. And Christie Muir, I think you
- 1:11:06pronounce her name, she just missed out on a bronze as well
- 1:11:08by nought .41 points. Thank you for that research,
- 1:11:11Cal. But yeah, just shame.
- 1:11:14Close. Close, but no cigar.
- 1:11:16Yeah, apologies for that technical issue you had there as
- 1:11:18well, guys. It's a bit of a blip.
- 1:11:20You know, what would a perfect episode be here?
- 1:11:22It'd be a bit rubbish, wouldn't it?
- 1:11:23You know. But yeah, so Winter Olympics
- 1:11:26covered in a nutshell. I've got a feeling over the next
- 1:11:28couple of weeks we're going to, we're going to keep you informed
- 1:11:30with this, hopefully go Team GB, go from there.
- 1:11:34But yeah, moving on to our next balls or any other ball.
- 1:11:39Sorry, it's not balls. All of the balls.
- 1:11:42All the balls I will get the feature right, Okay is we're
- 1:11:47taking a trip back down. We've covered a couple of times
- 1:11:50and that is the rugby league and this week was the round three of
- 1:11:55the Challenge Cup. Now on screen, if you are
- 1:11:59watching, if not get to know, on screen is a list of the scores
- 1:12:03from the week just gone. Now I'm not going to read them
- 1:12:05all out, but there is a little bit of a running theme with some
- 1:12:09of these scores that we're going to touch on and a few
- 1:12:13whitewashers. So Alan's Workington 98 two to
- 1:12:17be precise, whole KR and Loch Lane 104 nil.
- 1:12:24Now, look, we we spoke about this briefing on Sunday, but
- 1:12:28when we're just when we're just chilling before the Super Bowl
- 1:12:30and a lot of these teams on here are local to us.
- 1:12:35And we know, we know people play on these teams, for instance,
- 1:12:38And a lot, a lot of these teams are amateur.
- 1:12:41They don't get paid to play. They just make their way
- 1:12:44through. But at what point is it not
- 1:12:47growing the game? 104 NIL is not growing the game.
- 1:12:53Yeah, like what do you reckon to this?
- 1:12:58I just think it's like it's one of those sports where there's so
- 1:13:03many clubs and I, I love the Challenge Cup because it's got
- 1:13:07that potential for the FA Cup fairy tale.
- 1:13:09But I think the the difference is when you're comparing like
- 1:13:14the FA Cup football when to the Challenge Cup.
- 1:13:17Rugby league is, I think on a sport like football, which yes,
- 1:13:22it's a contact sport, but it's not about complete physical
- 1:13:27dominance, is it Like, all right, yes, if you're faster,
- 1:13:29you're more skilful, all that sort of stuff.
- 1:13:31Absolutely. But on the flip side, with
- 1:13:34rugby, you've got people who are, it's kind of like American
- 1:13:38football in it. If you put an NFL team against a
- 1:13:41brick ball team, you're going to get absolutely annihilated
- 1:13:45because you've got the absolute physical dominance in every
- 1:13:48single aspect of the game. And that's not to discredit any
- 1:13:51of the lads who play rugby. I mean, God, I'd get my bones
- 1:13:54broken within an instant these days.
- 1:13:57You, you've got, you've got professionals playing plumbers
- 1:14:00is what you've got. Literally.
- 1:14:02Literally. Yeah.
- 1:14:03Like. And it's not nuts when you look
- 1:14:05at. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:14:12There's a little technical. You look at like the whole KR
- 1:14:16lot lane score, right? That's nuts.
- 1:14:18And that's a close to home 1 104 nil.
- 1:14:22That's the biggest score difference, I think of the of
- 1:14:25the weekend. So I mean, Lotley and I are a
- 1:14:29complete amateur team, like completely.
- 1:14:32So you expect to score like that and you kind of accept it.
- 1:14:37So is there the potential for the upset there?
- 1:14:39No, there isn't. You look then more at scores
- 1:14:44like Widnes and Leeds 2512, you look at Doncaster, Castleford,
- 1:14:5114 to nil to Tigers. They are more closely sort of
- 1:14:56fought teams if you like, in terms of the standings and
- 1:14:59things like that. But then you start looking at
- 1:15:04teams that are super leagues for the top tier and you look at
- 1:15:07part time teams. So you've got Huddersfield
- 1:15:09Giants who were at the like the down in the doldrums of Super
- 1:15:14League last year and Hunslet are in the Championship, I believe
- 1:15:1952, six. It's it's a complete whitewash.
- 1:15:22So there's been a big review in rugby league, hasn't there,
- 1:15:26about sort of suggestions to make the sport better, more
- 1:15:30exciting and therefore now more viable.
- 1:15:33And which we know is an issue in in rugby league, it's very much
- 1:15:38a generally a northern sport. And one of the suggestions was
- 1:15:44to bring Super League teams into the Challenge Cup at the round
- 1:15:48of 16, which if I'm not mistaken, is the next round on.
- 1:15:53And to almost have a bit of a like a Millennium, not
- 1:15:55Millennium magic, sorry, that's it's original name, a magic
- 1:15:59weekend sort of set up for the Challenge Cup, which I think is
- 1:16:04probably right. Because then what you've got
- 1:16:05instead of like whole KR Loch Lane 104 NIL and and then Hull
- 1:16:10FC and Salford RLFC, which think is the new rebirth of the
- 1:16:14Salford team, 60 nil or cast Tigers, Doncaster 14 NIL.
- 1:16:19Those teams are getting hammered.
- 1:16:21You're actually going to get much more closely fought teams
- 1:16:24and you might end up then with like an exciting team.
- 1:16:27And for those that do get through, there's probably a big
- 1:16:29paycheck for those teams as well because there's less of them.
- 1:16:33They're playing at a big stage and I think it's just got loads
- 1:16:35of potential. But there's there's just a big
- 1:16:39issue. And one of the one of the things
- 1:16:41I've seen quite a lot recently, because there's been loads to
- 1:16:44talk about Super League and rugby league this last six
- 1:16:47months to a year because of what's happened to Salford,
- 1:16:49because of what's happened to Oldham recently going into
- 1:16:51administration, because of what's happened to Feverstone
- 1:16:54going into administration. And I've recently had announced
- 1:16:56Halifax have now entered administration.
- 1:16:58It's it's really sad. And there's a lot of talks been
- 1:17:01talks about like the NRL model in the in Australia that so you
- 1:17:06just have 10 teams or 12 teams, whatever number you pick who are
- 1:17:10the Super League and they're franchised.
- 1:17:12So for NFL fans who aren't into rugby league, you know, you only
- 1:17:15have your NFL teams. There's no promotion relegation.
- 1:17:17That'd be, that's what they're talking about.
- 1:17:19When the same franchise, you basically get a licence to play
- 1:17:22in that league. And then what the NRL have under
- 1:17:26that are like feeder clubs in the Queensland Cup.
- 1:17:30So like Brisbane for example, as the Brisbane team in NRL and
- 1:17:34they have a Brisbane team in the Queensland Cup if I'm not
- 1:17:37mistaken and they feed into each other.
- 1:17:39It's almost like a it's like a promotion within the team for
- 1:17:42players as opposed to a promotion of a team.
- 1:17:46But like I I think. There's a lot of merit there.
- 1:17:49I agree, but could you imagine Fair being approached to feed a
- 1:17:53team for Cass well? Who is?
- 1:17:56I mean, who is? I know, but I know, but that's
- 1:17:59just no, it's just an example into the rivalries at the moment
- 1:18:03within Super League. But I it's a dying, it's a dying
- 1:18:05spot. It's a shame to see it's a dying
- 1:18:07spot. I wanted to touch with a
- 1:18:08positive sign from this though, the lock lane social media pages
- 1:18:12and stuff and some of that. One of the players on my
- 1:18:16Instagram and they shared a video the locker room after the
- 1:18:23104 NIL that they they got beat and the locker room's bouncing
- 1:18:29locker room the the singing, the banging on tables they didn't
- 1:18:32give they didn't care they didn't give two toss that they
- 1:18:33just lost 104 NIL. The experience of them being
- 1:18:36there that have come from their day jobs, then going to play at
- 1:18:39all KR against all KR that that's that's top flight to most
- 1:18:45of these guys who've got farmers who've play sport for a bit of a
- 1:18:48laugh on a weekend. And like you say, I agree with
- 1:18:52take the Super League teams out there.
- 1:18:53Let let the smaller clubs, quote unquote, play another round
- 1:18:58because that money for a team like Loch Lane and again going
- 1:19:01back to brick ball for always, for instance, with our team,
- 1:19:06that money is like it's life changing to clubs.
- 1:19:10Look at where we used to play when, when that Ruby went sort
- 1:19:16of professional, they would not. They were the division that they
- 1:19:18got promote with, went some professional, got loads of money
- 1:19:21pumped into it and it changed the way they could invest within
- 1:19:24the clubhouse and that money goes a long way.
- 1:19:28And I just think, I think like Wigan beat in Rochdale 83 now,
- 1:19:31it's not a good luck for them. Neither team wants to do it,
- 1:19:36neither team wants to do it. But yeah, but yeah, it's all
- 1:19:41about touching on growth for the game though.
- 1:19:45We've got the World Club Challenge coming up and that's
- 1:19:50Brisbane Broncos coming over to the UK this year, but at the MKM
- 1:19:54Stadium, and that's Hull FC and they play at the.
- 1:19:56But that's where the MKM Stadium is, where Hull FC play, Sorry,
- 1:20:00but they're playing Hull KR this year and that's on the 19th of
- 1:20:04February, which is, and I like this, I like because we take it
- 1:20:07in turn and going over and it never ends nicely for the
- 1:20:10British team, I must admit. But it's a nice way to kind of
- 1:20:12grow that game and to spread the.
- 1:20:17Spread the out of the bringing that exciting team over.
- 1:20:20You always sell the tickets when they want to see the Australian
- 1:20:22NRL teams. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:20:26Yeah. And I think, I think that's a
- 1:20:28testament to then the growth that you've seen
- 1:20:30internationally, isn't it because of the Vegas games?
- 1:20:33You know, you've got Leeds against Hulk AR in Vegas on the
- 1:20:3728th of Feb and then you've got 2 NRL, sorry, two NRL fixtures
- 1:20:43as well. So I think you've got Canterbury
- 1:20:47and Saint George against Newcastle and North Queensland,
- 1:20:51which I think that's up to this year.
- 1:20:52Was it just two games last year? It might have been three.
- 1:20:55I know it's gradually increased over the last few years, but
- 1:20:58that's been massive. Like I think that's huge and
- 1:21:01there are there are US teams that play rugby league.
- 1:21:04I remember like a good few years ago, it ended up dropping on
- 1:21:07like a league that's happening over there.
- 1:21:09And there was the push one the recently for the Canada team,
- 1:21:12which obviously didn't quite work out, but there's growth
- 1:21:16there. And and I think the thing that
- 1:21:18kills me as a as a Yorkshire mining town lad is the rugby
- 1:21:23league is one of the most exciting games to watch.
- 1:21:27It's brilliant, it's fast-paced, it's skilful, it's high impact.
- 1:21:33It's almost that. It's almost what people who like
- 1:21:36the NFL but dislike the stop start of it.
- 1:21:39It's almost like, OK, watch rugby league.
- 1:21:43There's the less, less of a chess element to it, but it's,
- 1:21:47it's got all the, the bits that you like, the big hits, the
- 1:21:51skill level, the, the physical dominance side of it and, and
- 1:21:56then the pace is there as well. I, I love the sport and it's
- 1:22:00good to see it expanding and, and getting out and about.
- 1:22:05I just, I just hope, I hope it, it's saddened, I hope it
- 1:22:09survives. I hope someone can come in and
- 1:22:11really lead it and take it somewhere and grow it because
- 1:22:14it's an absolute world class sport.
- 1:22:17It's top level. Like watching the NRL is unreal.
- 1:22:19Like they are unreal. I agree.
- 1:22:24You know, we'll see. I agree.
- 1:22:26Quick honourable mention before we get off of this and into
- 1:22:31Carl's conundrum. We've got the Man City Liverpool
- 1:22:33X time madness Highlands 90th penalty, right, Which we we saw
- 1:22:39this just before our Super Bowl party started and the guy
- 1:22:42started turning up for it was absolutely wild.
- 1:22:45The the keeper comes out some some mess up happens, a halfway
- 1:22:49line goes for a shot. It's like a bubbled shot.
- 1:22:52It's rolling down. Harland's getting chased down.
- 1:22:55There's Dominic Subosley, Subosley.
- 1:22:59I think I pronounced that right. I had did try and Google that
- 1:23:01before, before the pod pulled Harland back and then Harland
- 1:23:07pulled him back. The ball went in and scored a
- 1:23:09goal, but then went to VAR because the initial pull back on
- 1:23:14Harlem was deemed A foul. It got disallowed at the goal.
- 1:23:16They went to a penalty. This is not the 19th.
- 1:23:20I mean, I, I, I think it were actually written down as the
- 1:23:2293rd minute, but I'm sure it was 97 minutes at one point up there
- 1:23:24when they were still debating what was happening and Harlem
- 1:23:28then scores the penalty. It goes wild.
- 1:23:30And they would end up winning three, one or some.
- 1:23:33I'm not a massive football lover but it was just, that's exciting
- 1:23:37to watch it. It was just a bit.
- 1:23:38Everyone did the pubs growing mental to begin with.
- 1:23:41It's just one of them, but it was.
- 1:23:44A weird one it like it's messy a messy.
- 1:23:47That's it, that's it. Well, that's the end of I
- 1:23:50mentioned and that is all the balls.
- 1:23:54We're now going to move on to our final segment of the evening
- 1:23:59and that is Carl's conundrum. And Carl's conundrum last week,
- 1:24:03mate, was which player holds the record for the most career
- 1:24:07rushing yards in Super Bowl games across multiple Super
- 1:24:11Bowls. So we had a bit of a Super Bowl
- 1:24:12theme one last week because of the Super Bowl.
- 1:24:15And the answer to that was Mr Franco Harris.
- 1:24:20So if you got that, well done. Thank you for the guys that got
- 1:24:23in touch and dropped as a message or a comment across the
- 1:24:25socials and on Spotify and stuff.
- 1:24:27Thank you very much for that. We're now going to get into next
- 1:24:31week's Carl's Conundrum, something for you to take home
- 1:24:33and listen to. So take take home, think about
- 1:24:35and let us know what your answer to this would be.
- 1:24:38And that would be which two players are tied for the most
- 1:24:43sacks in a single Super Bowl? So which two players are tied
- 1:24:48for the most sacks in a single Super Bowl?
- 1:24:51If you want clarification on this, head over to our socials.
- 1:24:54We'll post the conundrum up there for you so you can see it
- 1:24:58one more time. Which two players are tied for
- 1:25:00the most sacks in a single Super Bowl?
- 1:25:01And we will give you the answer next week on on the pod.
- 1:25:08We're now going to have an offseason plan in terms of what
- 1:25:11we're going to focus on. If there's something you guys
- 1:25:13want us to focus on, please let us know in the comments, let us
- 1:25:15know in the DMS, let us know in the messages.
- 1:25:17Then we're going to do a bit of a fantasy football pod, a bit of
- 1:25:20a bit of a draft way pod, maybe an ABNF fantasy Football League
- 1:25:25next year. Who knows?
- 1:25:27Who knows, maybe so. But yeah, that's it for today,
- 1:25:32though. Brought anything from yourself
- 1:25:33before we before we fire off? No, I just think it's it's been
- 1:25:38really good getting this off the ground.
- 1:25:40So it's it's weird because we've not been doing it too long and
- 1:25:43it it almost feels like the end of end of season 1 almost, which
- 1:25:48I mean, it's not we're going to keep going weekly outward, but
- 1:25:51it just yeah, it's been really nice to get off the ground.
- 1:25:53So those of you that are listening in our really doors
- 1:25:57are really pods like thank you and we appreciate the feedback
- 1:26:00that's coming in. So please do keep sharing.
- 1:26:02Please follow us on social media and wherever you get your
- 1:26:05podcasts, AB and F pod. So yeah, thank you.
- 1:26:09And we'll keep going weekly, even during the offseason, and
- 1:26:11we'll probably have a bit more of a focus on all the balls at
- 1:26:15times because it's all balls. No philtre, of course.
- 1:26:20But yeah, it's been good. It's been, it's been really fun.
- 1:26:22I've enjoyed it getting started with this.
- 1:26:24So I guess thanks to you, mate, thanks to Research Cal and
- 1:26:28thanks to the audience that have been listening.
- 1:26:31So we'll keep going and just, yeah, just thank you.
- 1:26:34And it's been a fun one. Pretty sure, yeah, we'll get the
- 1:26:37technical difficulties sorted at some point, but the make it fun.
- 1:26:40The make it fun. But yeah, thank you very much.
- 1:26:43We'll see you soon. Have fun.
- 1:26:45Stay safe and booze.
