- 0:02Speaker 1: Five minutes past the hour. It's Monday on the morning show.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm Mark Levin.
- 0:08Speaker 1: He's Jose on the phone line, Jerome from Jacksonville.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Go, oh wow, how you doing, buddy.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I'm doing great. I'm doing great. It's so funny because
- 0:27Speaker 3: you know, you do thousands of hours of live radio
- 0:31Speaker 3: broadcast and you usually are not You usually don't just
- 0:36Speaker 3: find yourself at the precipice of a cliff staring down
- 0:40Speaker 3: like that. There's a little bit of wind up that's involved.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But I could help.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Jerome Mudson is the entertainment editor at brightbar dot com.
- 0:51Speaker 1: He's the author of the Fifty Things books. But more
- 0:53Speaker 1: important to any of that, he's a friend of Jesus
- 0:56Speaker 1: and he's a friend of ours. I've got to we've
- 1:00Speaker 1: been riffing a little bit about Christianity today and what
- 1:04Speaker 1: a train wreck that publication is. Does a publication do
- 1:09Speaker 1: entertainment slash media outlets in the Christian world? Does it
- 1:15Speaker 1: find its way to your eye? Do you pay attention
- 1:18Speaker 1: to example for as an example of what's happened at
- 1:22Speaker 1: Christianity today.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So I'm a little unfamiliar with the current scandal a
- 1:30Speaker 3: running in Christianity today, but I read at least one
- 1:34Speaker 3: hundred websites a day, just sort of looking for the
- 1:38Speaker 3: interesting comment or quote from you know, name your favorite celebrity.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And so there are several celebrities who are very open
- 1:49Speaker 3: about their faith. And so I will read you know, Jerusalem,
- 1:55Speaker 3: about a half dozen to a dozen of those platforms.
- 2:01Speaker 3: But now I'm intrigued.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Well, they rolled out at Easter time this and social media.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The Bible doesn't say Jesus was nailed to a cross,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and it was to promote an article where some lone
- 2:14Speaker 1: evangelical Bible scholar thinks the crucifixion would have been carried
- 2:17Speaker 1: out with ropes, no nails. And so yeah, they've had
- 2:23Speaker 1: Russell Moore, the publisher is a train wreck. He ruined
- 2:27Speaker 1: the SBC. He's doing the same to Christianity today. He
- 2:32Speaker 1: rolled out the writer, and the writer said I am
- 2:34Speaker 1: so sorry and apologized, and I believe the writer. He
- 2:37Speaker 1: offered a heartfelt apology, but it doesn't explain the publication's
- 2:41Speaker 1: just disastrous fall from what Billy Graham founded it to be.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I was just curious. But that leads me to a
- 2:49Speaker 1: great segue. You were talking about celebrities and sharing their
- 2:52Speaker 1: faith Jerome. It seems like, and you will be the
- 2:57Speaker 1: one to correct me, and I know that you will
- 2:59Speaker 1: if in fact I am wrong on this or expand
- 3:03Speaker 1: on this dramatically. It seems like more and more people
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the world of entertainment, be that sports, be that
- 3:12Speaker 1: Hollywood music, are being more open about their commitment to
- 3:17Speaker 1: Christ and their faith. Is is that accurate?
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'm not surprised when you know, look at the first
- 3:30Speaker 3: thing that comes to mind when you asked me. That
- 3:32Speaker 3: is the last thing that I think I remember. So
- 3:35Speaker 3: maybe it's a little bit of recency bias, okay, and
- 3:38Speaker 3: that is Jalen Gosh, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Dalen Hurts, And it wasn't just uh, you know, I
- 3:50Speaker 3: you know, thank God, you know that we won this
- 3:53Speaker 3: football game. You know, He's like, I want to give
- 3:56Speaker 3: all honor Christ, uh, without whom I wouldn't be here,
- 4:01Speaker 3: you know what I mean. It was very just just
- 4:04Speaker 3: not your boiler plate. And then the head coach, Nick
- 4:07Speaker 3: Sirianni comes right behind him and sort of says the
- 4:10Speaker 3: same thing. And I don't know, Preston, if you know,
- 4:14Speaker 3: I just I don't get hagit packed But I love
- 4:17Speaker 3: my job anyway. I have to watch basically all of
- 4:20Speaker 3: the big award shows, and you just never hear any
- 4:25Speaker 3: of the artists, producers, the makeup artists, the actors. You
- 4:31Speaker 3: never actually, well, I wouldn't say never, but if a
- 4:34Speaker 3: thousand times, you know, nine and ninety nine times, you
- 4:39Speaker 3: just don't hear any reverence to Christ being paid. That said,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I just I feel like I'm seeing more headlines. And again,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I read a lot more headlines than the average being,
- 4:54Speaker 3: but I feel like I'm seeing a lot more coverage
- 4:57Speaker 3: of just these mega revivals, particularly on college campuses.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Buddy of the Morning Show, Jerome Hudson, back with us
- 5:09Speaker 1: from you. We're talking about what's going on on various
- 5:11Speaker 1: college campuses. We've talked about Ohio State being kind of
- 5:15Speaker 1: the epicenter, at least in the world of college athletics.
- 5:18Speaker 1: There was a revival going on before the football season
- 5:21Speaker 1: even started, and then you watch them in the national
- 5:24Speaker 1: title and all those guys taking advantage of that platform
- 5:28Speaker 1: to talk about Jesus.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Right, And you know, so, I guess what I'm trying
- 5:35Speaker 3: to get at is, I don't know if it is
- 5:38Speaker 3: sort of the chicken of the egg is is it
- 5:41Speaker 3: happening more or is it being covered more and reported
- 5:46Speaker 3: on more. I'm probably the worst person to be able
- 5:51Speaker 3: to sort of discern that because I'm just seeking out information,
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, twenty hours a day, and so I'm seeing
- 5:59Speaker 3: it myself.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 3: But but you know, you got the hobby lobby founder
- 6:05Speaker 3: David Green. He's had you know, his his uh, his
- 6:10Speaker 3: campaign now for a few years by the multi million
- 6:14Speaker 3: dollar ad spots, uh for the super Bowl what is
- 6:17Speaker 3: it called? He gets he gets us.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're they're brutally bad, but whatever it's I mean,
- 6:25Speaker 1: it's bad, it's bad theology.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and and but but see that's that's a that's
- 6:32Speaker 3: a sort of a discernment that that you'd make, right.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And I don't know if they're I think they're just
- 6:38Speaker 3: trying to at least capture the imagination and attention of
- 6:42Speaker 3: the surface level person who's like, you know, Christianity curious.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because because good theology won't do that, we've got
- 6:49Speaker 1: to fudge it up.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But but this is this is sort of a multi
- 6:55Speaker 3: media space in which sure you just you know, they
- 7:01Speaker 3: do billboards, but again, multi million dollar advise on you
- 7:06Speaker 3: most watch event, you know, entertainment event of the year.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I just I don't know if that was happening thirty
- 7:14Speaker 3: years ago. But you also had I think, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 3: maybe maybe an oversaturation of the televangelists. It's just it's
- 7:25Speaker 3: a fascinating conversation to have in the in the social
- 7:28Speaker 3: media age in which we are, where you have influencers,
- 7:32Speaker 3: but then you have Christian based influencers. You know. I
- 7:36Speaker 3: think it's I think it's a lot more ubiquitous, just
- 7:39Speaker 3: the acceptance of Christ.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It was yesterday on worldwide international television. I mean, it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: not really even arguable that while the Super Bowl is
- 7:50Speaker 1: the event, the game of soccer internationally is the most
- 7:54Speaker 1: watched anywhere in the world. And yesterday Liverpool clinch the
- 7:58Speaker 1: Premier League championship. And one of the guys that scores
- 8:01Speaker 1: a goal is a kid named Cody Gatpo and Cody
- 8:04Speaker 1: Cody runs after he scores his goal, pulls off his
- 8:07Speaker 1: jersey and underneath is a white shirt that says I
- 8:10Speaker 1: belong to Jesus.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Just you see. I see about a half dozen of
- 8:16Speaker 3: those examples a week, and again I love to see it. Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 3: but I just don't know, I just don't know if
- 8:25Speaker 3: that was happening in the nineties.
- 8:26Speaker 2: That's me.
- 8:27Speaker 3: That's my point of it was happening because I wasn't
- 8:30Speaker 3: watching football in the nineties, you know, or if it
- 8:35Speaker 3: was happening, it probably didn't make it to the American mainstream.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Prest see.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I think the pendulum swinging somewhat. I think there are
- 8:45Speaker 1: more young men in particular embracing Christ and their faith
- 8:49Speaker 1: than I can remember in at least a generation.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I this is.
- 8:55Speaker 3: This is so fascinating to me because I know that
- 8:58Speaker 3: you know, okay, so you know since the if there's
- 9:00Speaker 3: been like that client I don't know if it's been
- 9:03Speaker 3: precipitous in people going to church, sure, which you know
- 9:08Speaker 3: is not the end all be all because you go
- 9:10Speaker 3: to church seven days a week, right, and doesn't really
- 9:13Speaker 3: put down a marker of what your faith relationship with
- 9:17Speaker 3: Christ is. But I think that vacuum has been opened up,
- 9:23Speaker 3: and there have been several different variables, the hollowing out
- 9:26Speaker 3: of the middle class, the ninety thousand manufacturing structures that
- 9:31Speaker 3: existed in two thousand that don't exist today. You know,
- 9:34Speaker 3: so work and what it means to be a man,
- 9:36Speaker 3: and what it means to be a provider. I think
- 9:39Speaker 3: a lot of different variables kind of created this vacuum,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and so you're seeing it in the political space where
- 9:46Speaker 3: women have sort of really taken over the messaging apparatus
- 9:51Speaker 3: of the left and the Democratic Party, pushing men to
- 9:54Speaker 3: the side. Women based issues like abortion have sort of
- 9:59Speaker 3: ate and embedded that. And you see Trump winning fifty
- 10:05Speaker 3: percent of the young vote and an overwhelming majority of
- 10:09Speaker 3: men generally, but also Hispanic men and black men, and
- 10:13Speaker 3: I think, to your punsulum swaying point, faith has also
- 10:19Speaker 3: been a part of sort of this the feeling of
- 10:23Speaker 3: that vacuum, if you will. It is like strength and masculinity,
- 10:27Speaker 3: all these things aren't bad.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Completely organically. The subject matter thus far with my guest
- 10:40Speaker 1: Jerome Hudson at brightbard dot com, where he serves as
- 10:42Speaker 1: the entertainment editor as the author of the Fifty Things books,
- 10:46Speaker 1: former part of this radio program years ago, and he
- 10:52Speaker 1: survived that. But as fate would have it, I had
- 10:55Speaker 1: one article Jerome saved that I wrote your name on
- 10:58Speaker 1: because I wanted you to weigh on this, and I'm
- 11:01Speaker 1: just going to turn you loose to talk about it.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Netflix rolling out their own version of Narnia with the
- 11:11Speaker 1: possibility of a Meryl Streep as as land. What could
- 11:16Speaker 1: go wrong?
- 11:19Speaker 3: So the film is directed by Greta Gerrick, who's probably
- 11:23Speaker 3: now most famous for directing and writing co writing the
- 11:27Speaker 3: script for Barbie. And you know, her politics are no secret,
- 11:33Speaker 3: especially if you read right bart She's she was early
- 11:38Speaker 3: in the Hillary Clinton camp. And that's probably enough said
- 11:43Speaker 3: right there. Netflix through the years and in recent years
- 11:48Speaker 3: that stayed away from a lot of the controversies that
- 11:50Speaker 3: just seemed to play that company daily, certainly weekly a
- 11:55Speaker 3: decade ago, and this one it just it seems like
- 12:00Speaker 3: it's an unforced era in the sense that you have
- 12:03Speaker 3: a property from a the love you know, de pl
- 12:07Speaker 3: cs lewis Christian author. I mean I've heard people define
- 12:11Speaker 3: him that way, but he certainly has tunes that are
- 12:16Speaker 3: held high in the minds of people who are Christians,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and The Chronicles of Narnia is one of them.
- 12:23Speaker 2: And so.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Hire Netflix hiring a director who's been open about her
- 12:28Speaker 3: left wing politics, who's infused different versions of that in
- 12:33Speaker 3: her most popular films in the past to helm this project,
- 12:40Speaker 3: which the last time it was made at Gosha, I
- 12:42Speaker 3: want to say twenty years ago, was harolded right it
- 12:46Speaker 3: set box Office Records. It was an international blockbuster.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And so they're in my DVD collection. Say it again,
- 12:54Speaker 1: they're in my DVD collection, right.
- 12:59Speaker 3: And you know, lastly, what I'll say is, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 3: Meryl Street sort of being rumored as as as you
- 13:07Speaker 3: know I can plant portraying as Loon was I didn't
- 13:11Speaker 3: believe it originally. I like to be as completely as can.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It's completely honest with the audience possible. I'm like, this
- 13:19Speaker 3: is because because in my business, like we don't, I
- 13:23Speaker 3: don't necessarily I'm I'm usually not the first to report
- 13:26Speaker 3: something right, And so if I get a headline that
- 13:30Speaker 3: says Meryl Street, who is just very toxic, I would say,
- 13:36Speaker 3: with probably a lot of the center right people, who
- 13:39Speaker 3: would who would show up to watch this Netflix Narnia version,
- 13:42Speaker 3: ye being being rumored to play as Loon and like
- 13:46Speaker 3: this can't be real. And then some of the trade
- 13:50Speaker 3: publications start to leak it, which bolstered it, and I'm like, Okay,
- 13:54Speaker 3: this this might be real. And I actually don't know
- 13:56Speaker 3: if he has the part or not. But if kid
- 14:00Speaker 3: Meryl Street does portray the wild of Asthma in the
- 14:03Speaker 3: Netflix Narnia movie, I mean it's it's a war footing,
- 14:07Speaker 3: you know, in my mind, because I just again I
- 14:11Speaker 3: could be wrong. I try to. You know, you haven't
- 14:15Speaker 3: seen the movie. I haven't seen a script. Nothing's leaked.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But it doesn't look good. It certainly doesn't look good.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Jerrem, tell me this. We got about we got a
- 14:22Speaker 1: minute and a half lear here before we gotta go.
- 14:26Speaker 2: How is it possible?
- 14:27Speaker 1: I mean, are the works of C. S. Lewis? Are
- 14:29Speaker 1: the Narnia chronicles just open to anybody to take? Does
- 14:34Speaker 1: no one have to sign off on who does what
- 14:36Speaker 1: with it?
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah? I don't. I'm not granularly familiar with the Narnia
- 14:43Speaker 3: and the CS. Lewis, the estate and the intricacies of that.
- 14:48Speaker 3: But generally, when you have an electoral property, like say
- 14:51Speaker 3: Superman or Batman, the rights to the character belong to
- 14:55Speaker 3: the creator's a state or the family right, so they
- 14:59Speaker 3: have they generally contractually have to make a new Superman
- 15:03Speaker 3: or a new Batman every five to ten years. And
- 15:06Speaker 3: I would assume that Netflix they may have just bought
- 15:11Speaker 3: everything Narnia. Maybe not everything C. S. Lewis, but everything Narnia,
- 15:17Speaker 3: the licensing, all the IP and and so this could
- 15:25Speaker 3: be the first of you know, a few movies or
- 15:27Speaker 3: the first movie and then a series. Boy, huh. It
- 15:38Speaker 3: just it's confounding, and not a lot of things surprised me,
- 15:42Speaker 3: and this one so far is a head scratcher for me.
- 15:45Speaker 3: It really is. Netflix is run by really smart people.
- 15:48Speaker 3: They've done an incredible job growing that brand. They're in
- 15:52Speaker 3: football now, they're in football now. I mean, they're doing
- 15:56Speaker 3: five comedy shows live. And this one is just like
- 16:01Speaker 3: it's like it's like the Titanic steering purposefully steering into
- 16:06Speaker 3: what could be a massive iceberg. Right, yeah, but I'll
- 16:10Speaker 3: wait and see. I'll wait and see.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Always good to visit with you, my friend. We'll talk
- 16:14Speaker 1: again next month.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I love you so much, Love you too, all right,
- 16:18Speaker 1: Jerome Hudson with me this morning confounded him. Twenty eight
- 16:26Speaker 1: past the Hour, Brightbar dot com entertainment page and the
- 16:30Speaker 1: Fifty Things books
