Latest / PTT Music Podcast / Elastic Resilience: Why Bending Beats Can Lead To Burn Out
Transcript
- 0:21So I, I was actually looking at this plastic ruler on my desk yesterday,
- 0:25just bending it, and I realized we have this whole, um, this whole concept of
- 0:31resilience completely backward.
- 0:34We think of being strong as, like, being a brick wall.
- 0:38Totally rigid, unyielding, completely unbreakable.
- 0:43Wait, are you telling me you were just sitting there playing with office supplies
- 0:48instead of finishing your prep work?
- 0:51Okay, yes, maybe, but, but hear me out!
- 0:54It is a real physics thing.
- 0:57If that ruler were made of glass, it would shatter the second you put real pressure
- 1:02on it.
- 1:03But plastic has this property called, uh, elastic deformation.
- 1:08It absorbs the tension, it literally bends out of shape, and then it snaps back.
- 1:14It, it, it uses the stress to find its shape again.
- 1:17Huh.
- 1:19That is actually a really solid metaphor.
- 1:22Because we, we do that, right?
- 1:24We think being resilient means showing zero weakness, never bending,
- 1:29just absorbing impact after impact until we, well, until we shatter.
- 1:35Exactly!
- 1:36We shatter.
- 1:37And there is actual, real data on this.
- 1:40I was reading a, a psychological study from two thousand and twenty two on cognitive
- 1:45fatigue.
- 1:46They tracked people after major work crises, and the individuals who tried to
- 1:51immediately bounce back, like, to one hundred percent capacity right away without
- 1:56any intentional recovery phase, they had a forty percent higher rate of severe
- 2:02secondary burnout.
- 2:03Forty percent, Jordan.
- 2:06Forty percent?
- 2:08That is wild.
- 2:10But it makes sense.
- 2:12It is like you are, you are running on a sprained ankle and wondering why the whole
- 2:16leg gives out a mile later.
- 2:18Oh, absolutely.
- 2:19I mean, I am, I am the textbook case of this.
- 2:24Remember that creative project last year?
- 2:26The, the video launch where we missed our target by, like, a mile?
- 2:31Oh, yeah.
- 2:32You went into complete overdrive.
- 2:34It was, uh, it was intense to watch, honestly.
- 2:38It was exhausting.
- 2:40I put on this aggressive happy face, doubled my daily workload,
- 2:44and told everyone I was totally fine.
- 2:48I thought that was what a leader was supposed to do.
- 2:51And then, boom.
- 2:53Literally one month later, I hit a wall so hard I could barely look at my laptop for
- 2:59a week.
- 2:59Yeah, you, you completely ran out of fuel.
- 3:03But that, you know, that transition from absorbing damage to actually using the
- 3:08tension, that is what is so cool about the track PTT Music put out.
- 3:13Do you remember "Snap Back?"
- 3:15Oh, from July two thousand and twenty six?
- 3:18Yes!
- 3:18It is, what, like three minutes and thirty six seconds of just pure positive
- 3:24attitude.
- 3:25Right, three minutes and thirty six seconds of this incredible sonic structure.
- 3:31The, the driving rhythmic snaps and that heavy, heavy bassline.
- 3:36It does not try to sound, like, perfectly smooth or gentle.
- 3:40It embraces the tension.
- 3:42It feels like a physical pattern interrupt.
- 3:45When you listen to it, you can actually feel the rhythmic snaps acting like a,
- 3:50a release valve for your brain.
- 3:52It is honestly the ultimate antidote to the toxic grindset culture.
- 3:58You know, that whole sleep when you are dead, work through the pain mentality that
- 4:02people love to post about on social media.
- 4:05Ugh, please do not get me started on the grindset.
- 4:09It is so brittle!
- 4:11It is like people think they are machines.
- 4:13But machines wear out and break if you run them at maximum speed constantly.
- 4:18Exactly.
- 4:19It actually reduces your brain's adaptive capacity.
- 4:23There is this psychologist, Dr.
- 4:25Ann Masten, who focuses on everyday resilience.
- 4:29She talks about how elite level resilience is not about some massive,
- 4:34superhuman effort during a crisis.
- 4:36It is actually built through ordinary, day to day rhythmic habits and clear,
- 4:42proactive boundaries.
- 4:43Everyday resilience.
- 4:45I love that so much.
- 4:48It is about the small things.
- 4:50Which is exactly what we see in the music, too.
- 4:53Like, look at the twenty twenty five PTT Music track, "Can't Break Me Now."
- 4:58That steady vocal line is basically a self talk stabilization tool.
- 5:03Oh, totally.
- 5:04And there is actual cognitive behavioral therapy data behind that.
- 5:08Studies show that using repetitive, rhythmic vocal triggers can actually help lower
- 5:14your amygdala hyper reactivity by up to thirty percent during high stress scenarios.
- 5:19Wait, thirty percent?
- 5:21Just from a rhythmic trigger?
- 5:23Yeah, up to thirty percent.
- 5:26It's know to help calm the threat center of your brain so you can think clearly
- 5:30again instead of just panicking.
- 5:32That is incredible.
- 5:33So, how do we actually use this in real life?
- 5:37Like, when we are in the middle of a massive stress spiral?
- 5:41Well, we can do what I call the ten minute pattern interrupt.
- 5:45It is a super simple, step by step physical routine.
- 5:50When you feel that tension building and you are about to shatter,
- 5:54you do not push through.
- 5:56You physically step away from your workspace.
- 5:59You change your sensory environment, go outside, look at a tree,
- 6:02whatever.
- 6:03And then you just match your breathing to a steady, heavy beat,
- 6:07like the rhythm of "Snap Back."
- 6:10Just let the music help reset your nervous system for ten minutes.
- 6:13I love that.
- 6:15Ten minutes to go from a glass ruler to an elastic one.
- 6:19Alright, well, I am going to go step away from my desk now.
