- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the dark, cold garage because
- 0:31it's freezing and I'm getting ready to go on the road for a
- 0:34couple days. I'll be shooting from the road
- 0:36though, no worries. So today we're talking about
- 0:39learning from a mentor. And this is always a fascinating
- 0:43subject because some people have very, you know, idealistic
- 0:47things that they go to when they say, oh, I'm going to do a
- 0:49mentorship with somebody. Had many clients tell me about
- 0:54their disappointment with it or their overjoyed with it because
- 0:57the person poured into them. Over time, I've really observed
- 1:02what makes 1 better than another for somebody.
- 1:05It's kind of interesting when you really nail it down because
- 1:08most of us think, OK, I'm going in to learn how they do what
- 1:13they do. I'm going to watch all the
- 1:15steps. I'm going to go through it.
- 1:17I'm going to see exactly like, you know, every little detail
- 1:20that I can possibly gather up to understand exactly what it is
- 1:25that they're doing. Now, here's the crazy part of
- 1:27this. Yes, that is part of it, but
- 1:30there's a bigger part of it in my opinion, because it's digging
- 1:34into their mindset and their thoughts and their emotions and
- 1:37asking them, well, can you tell me while you're doing this, Like
- 1:41what are you thinking about? I mean, how many times have you
- 1:44ever asked a mentor that question?
- 1:46Well, OK, while you're doing this, I mean, this is awesome.
- 1:48And can you please tell me what are you thinking about while
- 1:51you're doing it? Where is your, where is your
- 1:53focus? Where is your mind and get them
- 1:56to think? Now, what's tricky about this is
- 1:58most people who are really great mentors or experts in what they
- 2:03do experience something that most of us are very unaware of.
- 2:08But they're unconsciously competent, meaning they do not
- 2:11know how they do what they do. And you know, that's one of the
- 2:16things that's always tricky. We've heard people mention that
- 2:18before. Well, you know, somebody's,
- 2:20they're really good at what they do, but they can't teach it,
- 2:23right, because they're unconsciously competent.
- 2:26Now they can, if they choose to pull back and actually think
- 2:30about it, they can define it for you.
- 2:33But it is about us as the student to ask the right
- 2:37questions. Especially if you're in a
- 2:39position where you really want to learn from someone and mentor
- 2:42with them. You have to dig into all aspects
- 2:45of it. So it's like being Sherlock
- 2:48Holmes. You're in there and you're,
- 2:49you're going through each and every aspect of it that you
- 2:52possibly can to ask the right questions about what they're
- 2:56thinking, what they're feeling, what their experiences was, what
- 2:59led them to those thoughts. And take notes.
- 3:03Because you will find the patterns and you will see
- 3:05exactly what it is that you think you can outline for
- 3:08yourself and say, OK, well, I want this piece or I want this
- 3:11piece or I want that piece. It's critically important to be
- 3:15a very good questioner. I don't know if that's a word,
- 3:19but it's it's an inquisitor, let's put it that way.
- 3:21You want to be an inquisitor, You want to go in there and dig
- 3:24in, figure out the nuance of it all.
- 3:27Now, the trick to this is telling them this up front so
- 3:31that you don't make them think you're crazy asking so many
- 3:33questions. You really need to frame it and
- 3:36go in and say, you know, I'm interested in a mentorship, but
- 3:39I'm also interested in learning the process behind the scenes in
- 3:43your head. And I would love to be able to
- 3:45share that with you when I'm done because maybe like a lot of
- 3:49other great people who know what they do, they don't know how
- 3:53they do it, they just do it. So it might be beneficial for
- 3:56you as well if I could share it. Now, that is a huge part of the
- 4:00gift back of saying I'm willing to share this outline with you.
- 4:04Obviously, not every single person is going to be open to
- 4:07this. Some people are negative and
- 4:09they don't want to have it bad. They'll be like, oh, I don't
- 4:11want to talk about that stuff. And if that's the person you've
- 4:14chosen, then that's the person you've chosen.
- 4:16And you have to figure out how to get around it so you can be
- 4:20covert in your questions so that you're not like, you know,
- 4:23bombarding them with them one after another after another.
- 4:26Like, you know, I've been known to do that.
- 4:28And sometimes it overwhelms people with a number of
- 4:30questions when I'm trying to learn something.
- 4:32However, over the years, as I've gotten older, I've learned to
- 4:36temper a bit of it with myself so that I can hold back just
- 4:39enough and get the information I need without actually driving a
- 4:43person insane in the process. But it takes a hot minute to get
- 4:47that, you know, skill built up. So you can do that.
- 4:50But a lot of people would love it if you said, oh, wow, yes,
- 4:54you're going to breakdown my process, not only what I do, but
- 4:57like my thoughts. That's very cool.
- 5:00And you're going to be invited in further and they're going to
- 5:02trust you and you're going to make a map for them and say, so
- 5:05this is what I've observed. And it's going to force you in
- 5:08the process to be able to actually give them while you're
- 5:12giving them that, giving yourself the gift of saying,
- 5:15wow, not only did I actually learn it, I, I saw what they
- 5:19did, but I can actually articulate it.
- 5:21So now I'm, I'm able to teach them what they did.
- 5:24And now I own it even further. So give yourself the gift, give
- 5:28it a shot and go out there and find a mentor.
- 5:31All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:33will see you tomorrow. Bye.
