- 0:00First and foremost, you know, we we get
- 0:02into the huddle um before the game
- 0:04starts and I look at my starters and the
- 0:06team. I'm like, "Look around you." It is
- 0:09Monday night at 9:15 on Christmas break,
- 0:14two two days before the new year in
- 0:15Auburn, Alabama, and this place is full.
- 0:18So, like so thankful. Um you know, this
- 0:22team, you know, eight and four coming
- 0:25into this game after a tough result at
- 0:27Purdue. You know, I feel like the
- 0:29majority of our fans are educated and
- 0:32rational for the most part. Um, I know
- 0:36it may not look like that sometimes, but
- 0:40they recognize the schedule that we've
- 0:42played. And, uh, you know, they
- 0:44recognized that they needed to come out
- 0:46and support this team, and they did. And
- 0:47I'm just I'm so thankful for that. And
- 0:49our players were, too. Like, they
- 0:50recognized it. Like, I I told them to
- 0:51look around, they're like, "Hell yeah,
- 0:53this is unbelievable." like nowhere else
- 0:55in the country, you know, in in in my
- 0:57opinion is going to have that type of
- 0:59turnout this late. Um so just so
- 1:02thankful for our fans um to show up like
- 1:05that, you know, in support of these guys
- 1:06and ultimately like it led to a really
- 1:09impressive first half for us and I
- 1:11thought that it really inspired our guys
- 1:13to go out there and, you know, lay
- 1:15everything on the line. I told our guys
- 1:16like our fans deserve your best
- 1:18performance tonight. They just do and
- 1:20you know I thought in the first half we
- 1:21gave them that. So, um, you know, first
- 1:24half we just had great activity
- 1:27defensively. That was the best we've
- 1:28played defensively all year. That's a
- 1:30top 75 offense in in college basketball
- 1:33as far as efficiency goes. Uh, team
- 1:35another team has picked to win their
- 1:36league. So, they have weapons to to
- 1:38really fill the b fill fill it up. And,
- 1:41uh, you know, a team that in their wins
- 1:43averages 14 threes per game. And, you
- 1:46know, we hold them to two. And the two
- 1:47that were made was it was Isaiah Henry's
- 1:50third made three of the year. And I
- 1:51think it was like Avonte Parker's fourth
- 1:53made three of the year. So to to not
- 1:55have man or Ashby or Burman or Jabriel
- 1:59uh make a three was really important.
- 2:00Number 22 being out for them was a
- 2:02pretty big miss for him offensively
- 2:04because he does so many good things for
- 2:05them. So um took advantage of that. You
- 2:07know I thought our activity with our
- 2:09hands early was really good. We did a
- 2:11great job of deflecting the ball. We had
- 2:13you know how many steals? We had 13
- 2:15steals. I think 10 in the first half.
- 2:16So, I thought our guys really flew
- 2:18around and did a great job of bothering
- 2:20what they did and just had them really,
- 2:22you know, discombobulated. Um, so guys
- 2:24did a great job defensively,
- 2:25offensively. We shared the ball in the
- 2:27first half. You know, 22 assists uh for
- 2:30the game is obviously our our goal was
- 2:3320 to 25. So, obviously great that we
- 2:35were able to to get to that. So, I
- 2:38thought the first half just looked like
- 2:39Auburn basketball again, which was
- 2:40encouraging. So, you know, second half,
- 2:42I thought their ball pressure bothered
- 2:44us and um, you know, that's why the game
- 2:46was a little more even. So, we have to
- 2:47do a better job of handling ball
- 2:48pressure, you know, cuz George is going
- 2:50to, you know, press us and really get
- 2:51after us on Saturday. So, we got to do a
- 2:53better job of playing under control. And
- 2:54I thought after the first like five
- 2:56minutes, we did a better job of that as
- 2:58the game went on. So, um, you know,
- 3:00Tahad having nine assists, you know, our
- 3:02two leading scorers having 14 assists is
- 3:05always going to help your offense. So,
- 3:07you know, Key and Tahad really sharing
- 3:09the ball, getting other guys involved,
- 3:11and obviously guys making open shots,
- 3:13you know, makes makes a difference. So,
- 3:15um, wish we would have played better in
- 3:16the second half. Um, part of it the
- 3:19score, but part of it was their ball
- 3:20pressure really bothering us. You know,
- 3:21I told, you know, I told coach that
- 3:23that's how they got to guard the rest of
- 3:24the year because that was the most
- 3:26active they've been defensively um, in
- 3:28in the games that I've watched. So, it's
- 3:30a good offensive team and um you know, I
- 3:33thought we did a pretty good job for,
- 3:35you know, obviously did a great job in
- 3:36the first half, just okay in the second
- 3:38half, but overall pleased with the with
- 3:40the effort, with the performance, had
- 3:41some step up. Great to see Elijah make
- 3:43open shots, you know, four four from
- 3:45three. Um, you know, I think that's his
- 3:48careerhigh, you know, 27 points, 20 of
- 3:51the 27 in the second half. So, he really
- 3:53gave us a spark offensively in the
- 3:54second half, which we needed. And then I
- 3:56thought our bench finished the game
- 3:58pretty well. So overall, you know,
- 3:59pleased, but um you know, we got to have
- 4:02a lot of step up on Saturday coming up.
- 4:04So
- 4:08>> three of the last five games, KO's had
- 4:1020 or more. We've talked about it, but
- 4:12when this when he's going like that on
- 4:15offense, just how much more dangerous do
- 4:17you think this team is?
- 4:20>> Yeah, I mean, you know, he uh adds uh
- 4:23you know, he's a third he's he could be
- 4:25that third score for us. Um he's playing
- 4:27with a lot of confidence right now and
- 4:29you know if he can see it he can make it
- 4:31which is great. I don't know how many
- 4:32threes he made against NC State but I
- 4:34think he's made like 10 to 12 threes in
- 4:36the last two games in Neville. So uh
- 4:38good to see him playing with a lot of
- 4:39confidence. I think a lot of it got
- 4:41started with his defense though. You
- 4:42know he had four steals in this game.
- 4:44Loved his activity on the ball. His ball
- 4:46pressure on um Watford I thought really
- 4:49bothered him. Um you know Watford
- 4:51averages I think six assists a game. He
- 4:54had two tonight. So, um, he got it going
- 4:57with his defense and, um, you know, just
- 4:59was playing with a lot of confidence
- 5:00offensively. So, um, you know, for if
- 5:03when he scores it like that, he shoots
- 5:05like that, we're going to have a chance
- 5:06to win, you know, games. So, uh, we're
- 5:08going to need him to do that again on
- 5:09Saturday, but obviously love to keep
- 5:11that going. Um, so yeah, it's been it's
- 5:13been good to kind of see him playing at
- 5:15that level because we we've known that
- 5:17he's capable. Um, but I'm I'm more
- 5:19pleased with his defense than I am
- 5:21anything.
- 5:23Coach, first couple opponents in
- 5:24conference player, teams that shoot a
- 5:26lot of threes. You held Queens to just
- 5:28two main threes tonight. What makes the
- 5:29difference on the perimeter?
- 5:30>> I think it was just multiple efforts.
- 5:32You know, I think we did a good job, you
- 5:34know, when we were in rotation of really
- 5:36just closing out and running people off
- 5:37the line. So, finishing possessions,
- 5:40multiple efforts, you know, limiting
- 5:41them to one shot. You know, I think they
- 5:43had maybe one or two offensive rebounds
- 5:45in the first half. So, did a good job of
- 5:48just limiting them to one shot, which is
- 5:49important against good three-point
- 5:51shooting teams because the best time to
- 5:52shoot a three is after an offensive
- 5:54rebound. So, did a good job with that.
- 5:56Um, but I just thought it was just
- 5:58multiple efforts and just keeping bodies
- 5:59on bodies. Our transition defense in the
- 6:01first half was pretty good. I thought we
- 6:02did a good job of just locating shooters
- 6:04and just, you know, getting matched up,
- 6:06which I think kind of slowed them down.
- 6:07For the most part, we stayed in the
- 6:09stance, uh, communicate our switches.
- 6:11You know, we kind of made them beat us
- 6:13from two. Um, so overall, you know,
- 6:15really good effort on the uh on their
- 6:18three-pointers because obviously it's a
- 6:19really important it's a really important
- 6:20piece of what they do.
- 6:22>> Stephen, just Elijah's second half
- 6:24really, just what did you see from him
- 6:25in particular that really stuck out as
- 6:27he kind of went on that tear?
- 6:28>> Yeah, just, you know, played with
- 6:30confidence. Um, you know, four four from
- 6:34three and just played under control, you
- 6:36know, had great tempo. I thought on
- 6:37penetration he did a good job of
- 6:39relocating and finding the open space
- 6:40and our guys, you know, to their credit
- 6:42found them. That's that's the important
- 6:44thing is like you know he relocated, he
- 6:47moved, but guys gave him the ball and uh
- 6:49you know he's a he's a big target out
- 6:51there. So um you know he just he just
- 6:54man if he saw it he could go in. Um so
- 6:57you know it's it's important you know
- 6:59we're going to need that type of you
- 7:01know that type of step up off the bench
- 7:02and for him to come in and do that you
- 7:04know obviously was was huge. um you
- 7:06know, still going to lean on him to just
- 7:08continue to be better defensively
- 7:10because he can be one of the best
- 7:11defenders in college basketball when he
- 7:12when he applies himself. But you see,
- 7:14you see how capable he is offensively
- 7:16just from what he did tonight. So, um
- 7:18you know, good to see him play with
- 7:19confidence. You know, going to need to
- 7:21continue that, you know, as we start to
- 7:22play the best teams on our schedule
- 7:24again. So, uh but happy happy for him.
- 7:27Proud of him. Just, you know, he's just
- 7:28he stays consistent, man. You know, like
- 7:30even when he's not shooting it well,
- 7:32he's still in there shooting. He's still
- 7:33in there watching film every day with
- 7:35Maris. It's like he's just very
- 7:36consistent in his work and it's starting
- 7:38to pay off. So happy for him.
- 7:41>> You mentioned the activity on defense,
- 7:4313 steals. Was that just a product of
- 7:45you guys playing more aggressive or was
- 7:46that, you know, more designed that way
- 7:48from?
- 7:50>> Yeah, I just think, you know, I think
- 7:52yesterday we had our best um just
- 7:54halfcourt defensive session, you know,
- 7:57of the year. And I just think, you know,
- 7:58our guys were just more connected and we
- 8:00communicated and we really locked into
- 8:02the details of the scouting report. And
- 8:04you know, we told our guys just play
- 8:05with active hands and and really just
- 8:08try and disrupt what they do. And I
- 8:10thought they really bought into that and
- 8:12that was probably the most active we've
- 8:14been with our hands all year really
- 8:15since probably the maybe the Oregon
- 8:17game. So, it's something that we can be
- 8:19good at because, you know, we have good
- 8:20length um and we have good quickness and
- 8:23speed. So, guys did a really good job
- 8:25there. You know, I thought um KO
- 8:27specifically in the first half, you
- 8:29know, Murf in the first half were both
- 8:32really, really good. and and really got
- 8:34our defense going and, you know, allowed
- 8:36us to obviously build a substantial
- 8:38lead. Um, so yeah, I thought our
- 8:41activity was great. Uh, we did a good
- 8:42job of mixing up our ball screen
- 8:44coverages and um, you know, guys just
- 8:46made multiple efforts. We talked about,
- 8:48you know, wanting to be able to finish
- 8:49plays, did a better job of this game of
- 8:51finishing plays in the first half.
- 8:53>> Two more here.
- 8:55>> You talked about the HD need to be more
- 8:58of a contributor. I mean, career high
- 9:00and assist for him. He got it going
- 9:01really quickly, really early. Did you
- 9:03kind of see just maybe a more concerted
- 9:06effort for him that or was it just kind
- 9:07of Yeah, you know,
- 9:08>> you could just tell he was looking for
- 9:09people in this game. Like he was looking
- 9:11for his teammates and you know, I think,
- 9:13you know, we told him like, "Yo, your
- 9:14assist turnover ratio is like 106 in the
- 9:16SEC." And I think he like took that a
- 9:19little personally and was like, "Shit, I
- 9:21need to, you know, pick this up." Um,
- 9:24but you could just tell like he was he
- 9:26was attacking the paint while looking at
- 9:29the rim. He was trying to see where his
- 9:31teammates were all night which I thought
- 9:33was really really good and um he was
- 9:35very intentional in that area and you
- 9:37know I didn't realize he was one for
- 9:39eight cuz I I I liked a lot of the looks
- 9:41that and a lot of the shots that he took
- 9:43um but you could just tell like you know
- 9:45throughout the game that he was trying
- 9:46to find his teammates and you know he
- 9:48got Elijah a couple he got KO a couple
- 9:52um had some really good looks to key so
- 9:54I just thought you know he was just way
- 9:56more intentional in his facilitating and
- 9:58uh you know it led to us scoring 106.
- 10:00So, um I'm proud of him for taking
- 10:02coaching. Uh but on the road, you know,
- 10:05we're going to need him to be able to do
- 10:06both because, you know, he's got to be
- 10:08able to make shots, but then he's also
- 10:09got to get his teammates involved. So,
- 10:10it it was good to see him because I know
- 10:12we we all know he's capable of doing it.
- 10:14And it was just good to kind of see him
- 10:15be intentional and just focus on a
- 10:17little bit more. Last one right here
- 10:19>> on Elijah again. Just as he's been
- 10:22coming off the bench recently, just is
- 10:23there anything different you notice in
- 10:25him when he's coming off the bench
- 10:26versus when he started the season? You
- 10:29know, I think part of it when we when we
- 10:31talked, um, you know, there was
- 10:35unselfish reasons and then, you know,
- 10:38there were some, and this isn't a
- 10:40negative, there were some selfish
- 10:41reasons, too, because, you know, when
- 10:43you're out there with Keshan Hall and
- 10:45Tahad and Murf and KO, you know, like
- 10:48it's hard to get the ball in your hands.
- 10:50So, one of the things he talked about
- 10:52was, you know, let's get Sebastian in
- 10:54there because Sebastian does a really
- 10:56good job of one facilitating and two
- 10:58making others better and then let me
- 11:00come in off the bench and kind of be a
- 11:02spark and then we're able to kind of run
- 11:04the offense a little more through him
- 11:05when those guys aren't in the game. Um,
- 11:08so it was uh, you know, it was it was
- 11:10intentional because I think it just
- 11:12allows him to play more minutes when
- 11:15there aren't as many ball dominant
- 11:16people on the floor. So, uh, incredibly
- 11:18mature by him to to recognize that. Um,
- 11:21and obviously, you know, I think it's
- 11:23it's been good for him. Um, I think it's
- 11:25been three games since we've done this
- 11:26and, you know, in the I think in the
- 11:28Chattanooga game played played pretty
- 11:29well. Um, so yeah. Um, but, you know,
- 11:35got a really tough opponent on Saturday.
- 11:37So, I know he's sitting back there in
- 11:39the corner and I hope he's listening
- 11:40right now because we're gonna need we're
- 11:41gonna need it on Saturday, too. So, um,
- 11:43but you know, he's making he's making
- 11:45strides, making progress, and, uh, you
- 11:47know, happy that he was able to see some
- 11:49some, you know, some positive results
