- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. It's Barry Nixon along, a man
- 0:14who truly knows everything there is to know about life.
- 0:17Jay, I've learned so much from you.
- 0:19It's incredible. There are men out there, but
- 0:21then there is the man, and that's you.
- 0:24Thanks for making time to be with me on another week.
- 0:26And our audience certainly appreciates that.
- 0:28You know, Barry, I would argue if I could, but that intro just
- 0:31was so spot on that I think it's it.
- 0:34I like to think I am the man, although in many ways I haven't
- 0:37grown grown up. So I'm quite the boy when it
- 0:39comes to my reading habits, my TV habits, a lot of my habits,
- 0:43my eating habits tend to. Be some of your dietary choices
- 0:46could be, you know, questioned. But yeah, that's not for mere
- 0:50mortals to question. Anyway, it's good to see you
- 0:53Jay. We have a an absolutely jam
- 0:55packed show. But before we dive in head 1st,
- 0:58I believe you and I will be doing a shot together, maybe 2 I
- 1:01think. So I think we're going to do
- 1:03that. I'm going to start with a very
- 1:05manly shot because you know, that's one thing only you have
- 1:09to be over a certain age to legally drink alcohol.
- 1:11And so tonight I will be consuming Bushmills Black Bush,
- 1:16one of my 2 faves that I always keep on offer.
- 1:19What have you got? Amazing.
- 1:20Amazing. I love the the the Bushmills
- 1:22black Bush. I haven't had it in a while.
- 1:24I have another Bushmills product, the 12 year nice.
- 1:27Equally delicious. Yeah.
- 1:29See you. Cheers, cheers.
- 1:35Oh, oh, it went up into my sinuses.
- 1:37In a good way, yes. In a good way.
- 1:39Wow. Yeah, from from that face, it
- 1:42almost looks like you did a somersault in a pool, you know
- 1:45that move. And then the water kind of goes
- 1:46up as you're going to go on under I.
- 1:48Know yeah, I felt that I've been in there I was looking at the
- 1:51LCBO when I was there last because I saw the 12 year at my
- 1:54LCBO it's behind lock and key and so I never asked for it
- 2:00because I see it and I go oh that's the one Barry gets all
- 2:03the time he likes it. But at my LCBO it is under like
- 2:06glass with another aged one. I'm not sure if it's a 10 year
- 2:09or anything but it's it's behind lock and key and I can't be
- 2:11bothered to bother people to get it for me.
- 2:13What do you think about that, Shane?
- 2:15They should be falling over themselves to open that cabinet
- 2:19for you, Jay. That's surprising.
- 2:20It's behind lock and key. Mine is just on the open shelf.
- 2:23Really. That's yeah.
- 2:24Wow. I've never seen it kind of just
- 2:26out there. I've seen it either not anywhere
- 2:29or at mine. It's behind lock and key.
- 2:30I guess there's a lot of a lot of near do wells looking to get
- 2:34their hands on the 12 year. It's a It's a good year for
- 2:37criminals. I guess so, but I'm wondering is
- 2:40maybe maybe you were seeing something like an 18 or because
- 2:44usually they lock up the stuff that's really really it's AI
- 2:46checked it. And it's like a $64 bottle.
- 2:48It's not the cheapest bottle of 12 year.
- 2:50Yeah. Like the the black Bush is like
- 2:52a 50 something dollar bottle. 55 maybe.
- 2:54Yeah, this one's of step up. And then there's one next to it,
- 2:57which I bet you is the 18. And they they keep them
- 2:59together. Interesting.
- 3:00Yeah, Yeah, I would have thought 64 bucks, while expensive and
- 3:04certainly not, you know, good. Quality, yeah.
- 3:06You wouldn't think that would have to be locked up.
- 3:08That's. It's not that big a step up, I
- 3:10know, from the black Bush. Like that's right there.
- 3:12Why are you locking up the 12 year?
- 3:14And really, if somebody's stealing whiskey, they're going
- 3:18to just steal whatever they can get their hands on anyway.
- 3:20You're thinking it's mostly to be consumed.
- 3:22I guess it could be resold, but you know, yeah, the free, the 12
- 3:27year, I say, that's what I say. LCBO at DuPont near Spadina,
- 3:32Free the 12 year please. Dude let's get that trending on
- 3:36X free the 12 year. I love it.
- 3:38Yeah. And I will say they do have
- 3:40ample black Bush, Jameson black black barrel, sorry, Jameson
- 3:44black barrel as well. So that I'm happy about.
- 3:46They've got several facings of that.
- 3:48So nothing to complain there. That is good.
- 3:51That's something I would love to see returning to my LCBO.
- 3:54It's so inconsistent I really don't understand who does the
- 3:56ordering. I don't either.
- 3:58Anyway, Barry, you've been very vocal in the last several
- 4:01episodes as you've taken us through World Cup fever.
- 4:03I'm wondering what you've got for us today to talk to and, and
- 4:06I'll, you know, do my best to keep up And, and really, I've
- 4:09been carrying my fair share of the load.
- 4:11I, I want to be able to do that in this episode.
- 4:13Hence a little bit of a chat about how we lock up our boots.
- 4:16Right. Yeah, exactly.
- 4:17Well, that's thread. I can certainly update you at
- 4:19the time of this recording, you might notice that I'm wearing an
- 4:22England shirt. England has made it ratted
- 4:25through to the quarter final and they will be facing the
- 4:28Norwegians this Saturday at the time of this recording.
- 4:31So just a few days away. And it's do or die as if all
- 4:34these matches are now they're all one and done eliminations.
- 4:37But I don't remember ever England and Norway facing off.
- 4:40And if they have, I don't think it was ever this deep in the
- 4:43tournament. So it's super exciting and let's
- 4:46go England, let's go Lions and hopefully they can come through
- 4:49and move on. It would be be super exciting,
- 4:52yeah, if they could. I've got to tell you, I've been
- 4:55watching as well. I'm getting caught up in the
- 4:56fever now. Ever since the Canada game, the
- 4:59most recent Canada game where they lost and then I watched I
- 5:01think it was. The Morocco that was.
- 5:03Yeah, France and Mexico, basically.
- 5:04I watched all the host countries get put out.
- 5:07Was it France and Mexico? Yeah.
- 5:09France is not a host but USA and.
- 5:12Mexico is so as I met and Mexico lost.
- 5:14So France beat Mexico, Canada got beat, and then of course the
- 5:17US just got beat. So all of the host countries are
- 5:19now out of this turn? That's right.
- 5:20Actually was actually just to correct you quickly, it was
- 5:22England that defeated Mexico in Mexico City to send them home.
- 5:26Yeah, that was beautiful. An absolute stunner of a game.
- 5:30It was just incredible. Yeah, that and that stadium was
- 5:33incredible. Like that stadium in Mexico was
- 5:36like, it kind of puts BMO Field a bit to shame.
- 5:38But that thing's built, I think, for soccer, right?
- 5:41The Mexico. It's purpose build for soccer.
- 5:43They call it the Azteca, and it's a legendary facility that
- 5:47has probably, I don't know, like 90, maybe 80,000 in the seats.
- 5:50Like it's enormous. And apparently it gets super,
- 5:53super loud. I could see.
- 5:55Because that's a lot of people excited about the same thing.
- 5:58So, yeah, that's true. Yeah.
- 6:00So what? OK.
- 6:01Have you got a pick then? I know England is the jersey
- 6:04you're wearing, so that would be your pick.
- 6:07OK. That is my pick.
- 6:08I truly hope that they can make it past the Norwegians.
- 6:11And then who's to say who will be next?
- 6:13But this has been one heck of a tournament.
- 6:15Jay, everyone, we'll always remember the 26 tournament, not
- 6:19just because it was in our own backyard.
- 6:22I what am I saying? Of course it's because it was in
- 6:24our own backyard. Everyone's going to remember the
- 6:2626 tournament, but there's been so many surprises, so many
- 6:29upsets. It's just been so entertaining
- 6:31today. At the time of this recording,
- 6:33the yard continuance were down to nothing in their must win
- 6:37situation against the Egyptians and they came back and 132 like
- 6:42nobody's out of this out of any of these matches it seemed even
- 6:45with just like a handful of minutes left at the end of the
- 6:48match. So Argentina is through at the
- 6:50time of this recording. Executive producer Aldo Roma
- 6:53looked up a stat and it was Who has won the most World Cups?
- 6:57Can you tell me, Barry, who's won the most World Cups?
- 6:59I believe it's Brazil with five, five of them.
- 7:02You're correct. I thought it was 4, but it was.
- 7:04It's definitely Brazil. They're of course out.
- 7:06They were put out of the tournament.
- 7:08Thank goodness. I know this.
- 7:09Look, I'm talking sports. With they are dangerous, yeah.
- 7:12Dangerous. Yeah.
- 7:13So they were like #1 And then he made a separate comment going,
- 7:17it's amazing. You hear a lot of these teams
- 7:18with a lot of bluster that have actually never won the World
- 7:21Cup. But there's a number of teams
- 7:23that are like, they're talking like they've won it.
- 7:25They're acting like they've won it, but they've never won it
- 7:27yet. So they're thirsty for their
- 7:28first World Cup. And they're, yeah, not humble.
- 7:31Out of the 100 years almost of this tournament existing, only
- 7:35eight countries have won the World Cup, which is incredible.
- 7:39Right. Only every four years.
- 7:41Yeah, that's true. OK, So be 40 tournaments I guess
- 7:43in in 100 years? Well, almost 100.
- 7:46It'll be 120, 30. But regardless, only eight
- 7:49nations have won it. And like you said, there's been
- 7:51many other teams competing in it.
- 7:53They they talk a big game. Maybe some of them will have won
- 7:56European Championships, CONCACAF or tournaments in South America.
- 7:59At the World. But the World Cup is the World
- 8:02Cup, so. It is the you know what nobody
- 8:04has. Said.
- 8:05It nobody said it better than you, the World Cup is the World
- 8:09Cup and I think on that. Truly is.
- 8:11We should do our second. Shot.
- 8:12Let's do it. All right, you know what?
- 8:15I'm drinking the black Bush and you.
- 8:17I'm sticking with what's working, Jay, and that's the
- 8:19Bushmills. 12 year behind lock and key.
- 8:22Here's to you. Cheers.
- 8:26Now, you sent me an interesting text earlier today on a new item
- 8:29that has changed your life almost from the outset.
- 8:33Yeah. From on from the unboxing to
- 8:35this moment, your life is different.
- 8:36Tell us how. Barry, I always read at night,
- 8:40as you know, and a lot of that is comics.
- 8:42And I read before I go to bed. And so I'm always reading on my
- 8:45iPad. And it's comfortable and it's
- 8:47nice. But it's, you know, it's, I
- 8:48have, as, you know, behind me, you can see physical copies of
- 8:51giant omnibuses and things that I buy and like to have in my
- 8:54collection. But I don't always, you know,
- 8:55I'm reading at night. So I don't get a chance to
- 8:57always read these physical books that I love so much.
- 9:00Well, suddenly I was reading in the chair in the living room,
- 9:04and I turned on the light over me and it was very bright.
- 9:06And I was like, oh, this is too bright.
- 9:08And then I thought, this must exist.
- 9:10And I went to Amazon, which is where you always go when you're
- 9:12not sure something exists because they will have it.
- 9:15Yeah, and it was an on book clipped reading light.
- 9:19You clip it on the back of your book.
- 9:21It has to have a heavy enough spine.
- 9:23It can't be like a loose comic. I can't do that.
- 9:25It's got a little little wire and then it's got the light and
- 9:28like 8 LED settings, dimness for days.
- 9:31It now charges up with a, with a regular charger, kind of like a
- 9:34phone would do. And I'm reading in bed.
- 9:37As I said to you, it turns every physical book into an iPad
- 9:40basically. Because I can now read, I'm
- 9:42flipping pages. It's not disturbing.
- 9:44Executive producer Alda Roma, who's right next to me.
- 9:47And I took it on its maiden voyage last night.
- 9:49And I have to tell you, I really enjoyed this.
- 9:51It's so lightweight, you can't even feel it on this book.
- 9:54Like you, it does not add really any weight at all, maybe not not
- 9:57even an ounce to this book. So I'm loving this.
- 10:00So I'm going to be able to now alternate between iPads and
- 10:04physical books. And as you know, I don't sleep
- 10:06so good. So I'm also trying it because I
- 10:08know screens are kind of bad for you at night.
- 10:10So I'm kind of going to go on a little quest and see if it works
- 10:14where maybe post 7:00 PM onwards, I'm going to go to the
- 10:17physical book and just, you know, check in on my phone if I
- 10:20need to, but go to the physical book and read off the physical
- 10:23book. So I'll this will be a journey
- 10:25that my our listeners and our viewers and you can come on with
- 10:28me as I see if that helps improve my sleep.
- 10:30Right. Well, that's very, that's a very
- 10:32good point that screens have been linked to some sleep
- 10:36interruptions, especially before bed.
- 10:38So this is a kind of a cool experiment.
- 10:40What was the first book that you took to bed last night and
- 10:43watched or read rather? Yeah.
- 10:46What was it? Oh my God.
- 10:47Barry, this is a story in and of itself, but it's called All.
- 10:50Right, let's go. It's called X-Men Else When and
- 10:54it is by a creator named John Byrne who is a legendary comic
- 10:59book creator. He had a legendary run on the
- 11:01X-Men and this is in the 70s. He left the book in like 7980
- 11:06due to disagreements with the writer and he went off and he
- 11:10did a big run on the Fantastic Four.
- 11:11Anyway, during the pandemic, he started doing fan fiction where
- 11:16he would post one page on his website of just penciled pages
- 11:20of this is what I would do if I had continued my run on the
- 11:24X-Men. And he posted one page every day
- 11:26or so for a couple of years for nothing.
- 11:29He paid nothing, although he has sold the pages and made a lot of
- 11:32money, I've heard, like through selling original artwork.
- 11:35So he's not starving, but it was something that he did for a
- 11:38couple years and he and so just this past year they've made they
- 11:41decided they were going to ink it, color it.
- 11:44So they got an anchor over his pencils.
- 11:45They're colored it and they bound it.
- 11:47There's the empty spine because I take it out of the slip cover.
- 11:51It's behind me. And so they've they're not
- 11:53publishing it in three volumes of John Burns X-Men else when,
- 11:57and this is if he would have continued now he stopped doing
- 12:00that too. So I know it's going to end on a
- 12:02cliffhanger. And he's already said when we
- 12:04published the third volume, I'm just I don't feel like doing
- 12:06anymore. So I'm just going to write out
- 12:07what the rest of the story would have been.
- 12:09I'm going to tell you how it would have ended.
- 12:10And that's great because this guy is he got me into really
- 12:14collecting comics with his Superman run in 1986, the Man of
- 12:17Steel, which I will be getting an absolute edition when it's
- 12:20comes available later this summer.
- 12:22And you'll be the first to see it anyways.
- 12:24John Burns X-Men else when is an alternate reality of how the
- 12:29X-Men would have gone had he continued on the book and taken
- 12:32over the writing chores. So that was my I just got it
- 12:35about a week ago and it's what I was excited to read it and I
- 12:38started reading it last night and it's great.
- 12:40It's just a lot of fun classic comic book stuff, classic comic
- 12:44book art, not a complicated story and really kind of a cool
- 12:48story of how he at a time when he just felt like doing stuff
- 12:50like he's older now, he's in his 80s.
- 12:52So he, he just started putting out, putting out these pages and
- 12:56rough pencils. And people over the years have
- 12:58kind of grabbed the pages and ink them and collected them
- 13:00themselves. So Marvel decided, hey, let's
- 13:02make some money out of this, and they've put them together in a
- 13:05book and approved this this publication.
- 13:07So he's not only an artist, but a writer as.
- 13:09Well, yeah, he he was he wrote and drew the Fantastic Four for
- 13:13like a number of years. He wrote and drew Superman.
- 13:16In 1986, he relaunched Superman. So a lot of the elements of
- 13:20Superman that we know today, he came up with or was a Co creator
- 13:23in like Lex Luthor being a businessman, you know, as we saw
- 13:27in the latest Superman movie and has been that way since the 90s.
- 13:30He, a guy, a writer named Marv Wolfman came up with that they
- 13:33work together on this. Superman's parents not being
- 13:35dead, but being alive, like stuff like that were all stuff
- 13:39that he, he came up with as part of his run.
- 13:41And it was that Superman comic Superman #7 that I saw at the
- 13:45newsstand. And I was like, how can Superman
- 13:48only be at issue number 7? And then I bought that and I
- 13:50realized that he relaunched it. And anyways, he's done lots of
- 13:53other stuff, big runs on Wonder Woman, the New Gods, all kinds
- 13:56of characters you have no idea of.
- 13:58Like your eyes are like super glossed over now.
- 14:00As they should could be, but he is a legendary creator.
- 14:03Bit of an attitude, a lot of a chip on his shoulder and a lot
- 14:06of interviews he ties. But he was so popular in the 70s
- 14:10and 80s especially that he he could basically say and do
- 14:13anything he wanted because he was bringing in a lot of money
- 14:16for Marvel and DC. Where does this chip on his
- 14:19shoulder come from, do you think?
- 14:20He's just. You know, so successful.
- 14:23Well, that's it. I think, you know, sometimes
- 14:24when you're driven to success, you're driven to, I don't know
- 14:27about a chip on his shoulder. Very strong opinions.
- 14:30Definitely bought into the hype of him being because you know,
- 14:33when you're the number one star, like think of an athlete when
- 14:35you're the number one star, you're driving, you're putting
- 14:37the bums in seats, you're making things happen for a giant
- 14:40company. And then that starts to turn.
- 14:42You're a little bit past your prime.
- 14:43Tastes change. You know, it's hard to kind of
- 14:45let that go like he's a competitor.
- 14:47I would say he's probably a. Sure.
- 14:48Yeah, that's a good, that's a good analogy.
- 14:51And yeah, I guess at that level, you're probably drinking your
- 14:53own Kool-aid on how good you are.
- 14:55And you're being, you're surrounded by people telling you
- 14:57that all day. Long, that's right.
- 14:58And you're seeing your other people come up like there were
- 15:00other comic book creators at that time that were like getting
- 15:03attention. And so you're always trying to
- 15:05kind of one up each other. Yeah, it was a big time in the
- 15:0790s was a big time of that. There's we'll talk about this
- 15:09another time, but there's like a whole other sets of creators of
- 15:12different eras that come up. Like there's, there's a podcast
- 15:15I've listened to by a creator named Rob Liefeld.
- 15:18He's a huge fan of John Byrne collects his original art, this
- 15:21guy. So the Rob Liefeld created
- 15:23Deadpool and a bunch of that's his real big claim to fame.
- 15:26But he's he's had a lot of success.
- 15:28He loves John Byrne's art, loves it.
- 15:30But John Byrne hacks on him because he was one of the
- 15:33creators of the 90s. John Byrne was one of the 70s
- 15:36and 80s. So the 90s creators kind of
- 15:37supplanted them as being the superstars.
- 15:39And see, that's where some of this chip on the show, he's just
- 15:41like, there's a lot of fight. So John Byrne has taken shots at
- 15:45him. But Rob Liefeld can separate the
- 15:47art and the and the kind of personality and he's he owns a
- 15:50lot of this individual, this kind of original art, I should
- 15:53say. Anyway, it's kind of and Rob
- 15:55Liefeld on his own is also a very polarizing creator.
- 15:57He's also will talk up a tough game and remind everyone that
- 16:02always that he created Deadpool and he'll say, I'll do it
- 16:05because nobody else is going to. So I have to hype it up.
- 16:08And he gets he also gets royalties for when they license
- 16:12out Deadpool. So it's in his best interest to
- 16:13keep Deadpool as a popular character.
- 16:15Right. Well, I think Ryan Reynolds is
- 16:17certainly helping in that regard.
- 16:18I don't think he has to worry so much about that character being
- 16:21relevant or going away anytime soon.
- 16:23He no, that shouldn't have been brought to the forefront.
- 16:25Yeah, exactly. That's pretty cool.
- 16:27I can imagine you in an alternate universe working as a
- 16:30comic book writer slash illustrator.
- 16:33I mean, I think that in an alternate universe you would be
- 16:35right at home in that environment.
- 16:37Yeah, I used to. Well, when I was a kid, I used
- 16:39to write and draw my own comics. I had.
- 16:40They're in my basement. I'll show you the next time
- 16:42we're at the mini mansion. I'll show you some of the
- 16:43classic from the yes yeah, Oh yeah from Jr.
- 16:47Comics. They were just being.
- 16:48Revealed now you. Didn't know this.
- 16:49My mom would know this. Yeah, Millie knows this.
- 16:51There was. So I've actually, those are one
- 16:53of the few things I've kept, which is like collections of of
- 16:57comics that I created as a kid. There are some titles you might
- 17:00recognize, like the Amazing Spider Kid, the Incredible Kid,
- 17:04Super Kid. There were a lot of a lot of
- 17:07characters that were a theme here.
- 17:09Yeah. Similar to characters you might
- 17:11think you know, but they're not exactly that.
- 17:14You don't the The Amazing Spider kid just happens to look like
- 17:17Spider Man and have similar adventures.
- 17:19They fought a lot of classmates that I was that I went to school
- 17:23with. My classmates would be like,
- 17:25draw me in your comments. So they would be, they would
- 17:27kind of fight. Wow, Yeah, that was kind of a
- 17:29thing. You didn't definitely want to
- 17:30see this and we should have Millie on the show to.
- 17:33I cannot believe that this is just being unearthed today on
- 17:36episode 299. I was saving it for this.
- 17:39Yeah, I was saving it. All right before we go just
- 17:43really quick Jay, I have a quick 4K corner for you and I did
- 17:47preview this disc even though you and I do have a a plan to
- 17:49sit down together and watch it, which I am happy to do because
- 17:52this movie I'm I'm here to tell you right now I.
- 17:55Think I know it up, Beastmaster. Yeah, the Beastmaster.
- 17:58After seeing it too, I feel like I understand you better.
- 18:01Why? Because this lead character,
- 18:04DAR, he doesn't wear a shirt the entire movie and there's only
- 18:08one scene where he pops on like a tarp just to like the disguise
- 18:13of the commoner. It itches his skin so badly.
- 18:16It's only on him for about 20 seconds and then he's back to
- 18:19being the boss, sweaty guy. So you as a young man figuring
- 18:23out who you are, this I can completely get the appeal of the
- 18:28beast master for you. I was like, OK, I think I
- 18:31understand Jay more. This guy, obviously, he's
- 18:33working out. Yeah, he's doing what he needs
- 18:35to do. And it's just hilarious that no
- 18:38matter what scene, what circumstance, this guy is just
- 18:41oiled up and ready to go. Yeah, I think everybody goes a
- 18:44little gay for a Beastmaster. That's just how it is.
- 18:47That's just how things go. Exactly.
- 18:49Yeah, totally. This is.
- 18:50And it's Mark Singer, am I right?
- 18:51From V, From the show V, Yeah. And yeah.
- 18:55I remember when I first watched it, like, as not a child, I was
- 18:57like, Oh my God. Mark Singer.
- 18:58Mark Singer's really well put together, but yeah.
- 19:01Yes, yeah, good for. His good for him in those days,
- 19:04he was holding it together. Yeah.
- 19:06The Beastmaster, Yeah. The Beastmaster also with Rick
- 19:09torn as the the main baddie, the main heavy in the movie, along
- 19:14with some like really disfigured witches that he has that have
- 19:17fantastic like supermodel bodies, but their faces look
- 19:21like they're wearing ham sandwiches on their face.
- 19:23It's it's terrible. But anyway, the movie holds up,
- 19:28Jay, and you'll love the runtime.
- 19:29It's very lean, though. I look forward to revisiting it
- 19:32with you. I thought it was good.
- 19:33It held my attention the entire time.
- 19:34I thought it was. It clipped along nicely.
- 19:36And the animals in there, of course, you know, you got the
- 19:38black tiger, You got the eagle. Yeah.
- 19:41It's pretty cool. Yeah.
- 19:42Amazing. I enjoyed it.
- 19:43I enjoyed it very much. Thank you for 4K Corner, that
