- 0:00Speaker 1: Today's guest is a legendary actor, one of the greats,
- 0:04Speaker 1: they'll say.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'll say it. People are saying it.
- 0:09Speaker 1: He's had so many amazing roles in The Joker, Walk
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Line, The Master, Signs. Eddington is his new film,
- 0:21Speaker 1: which I got to take a peek at before we
- 0:23Speaker 1: got together. We caught up at the Hotel Chelsea Hotel.
- 0:27Speaker 1: in New York City. Today's guest is Mr. Joaquin Phoenix.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, do you have any, you okay if we start, Joaquin?
- 0:51Speaker 2: I am. Why are you looking at the ground? What's
- 0:52Speaker 2: going on? I don't know. I just feel like I'm
- 0:54Speaker 2: a little bit nervous.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Oh, because it seems like the assassin, like, before he's
- 0:59Speaker 3: about to fuck people up, he's just, like, staring, like,
- 1:02Speaker 3: getting in the zone. It's like, let's do this. So
- 1:05Speaker 3: I was like, okay, yeah, I mean, start. Sure, man, start.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I think I'm waiting for, like, the coaches in my
- 1:11Speaker 1: head to show up and be like, you can do this,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:14Speaker 2: You can do this. You can definitely do this. Thank you.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm questionable. But Coach is like, he's questionable. We're not
- 1:25Speaker 3: sure if he's going to play.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Hey, that's not Jimmy Chitwood, okay? We've got to sit
- 1:29Speaker 1: that guy.
- 1:29Speaker 2: On the bench, you know? I don't know who that is.
- 1:32Speaker 2: It was the guy from Hoosiers, remember? Who comes in
- 1:35Speaker 2: and makes the shot. I don't remember. Dang.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Thank you for telling me you don't remember instead of
- 1:40Speaker 1: pretending like you do, though, so I keep talking about it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: You're welcome. It's going to happen a lot. There's a
- 1:46Speaker 2: lot that I probably don't know.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Well, we're going to find out. Thank you for your time, man.
- 1:52Speaker 2: No, thank you. I appreciate it. I really appreciate it.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And thank you for all your beautiful work over the years.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It's been nice to witness and consume as just a
- 2:00Speaker 1: regular person in the world.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Thank you. You're very sincere. It's very nice and refreshing
- 2:09Speaker 3: and also slightly uncomfortable.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry.
- 2:11Speaker 1: No.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I know you're married, so I'll keep it just as sincere.
- 2:15Speaker 1: We won't get physically sincere because that can be– it's
- 2:18Speaker 1: outlawed in some territories.
- 2:21Speaker 2: But no, thank you for your time, man.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And yeah, thank you for all the cool work and
- 2:25Speaker 1: helping us think and stuff like that just as viewers. Yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it's funny how sometimes life or God or whatever uses
- 2:32Speaker 1: a person as an instrument. And yeah, you just have
- 2:36Speaker 1: such a great way of– yeah, just being able to
- 2:38Speaker 1: do something that we can't, so many people can't do,
- 2:41Speaker 1: but then it helps us, the rest of us reflect, um,
- 2:44Speaker 1: on how we do things and live.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So does it make any sense even? It's very nice.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know.
- 2:49Speaker 3: All, all, all I'm hearing is, um, all I want
- 2:53Speaker 3: to say is like, no, everyone can do it. I
- 2:55Speaker 3: don't have anything special. I don't do anything special.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Well, you're a lucky guy then. You've been fortunate. I've
- 3:00Speaker 2: been very fortunate. I've worked with great, great people. Um,
- 3:05Speaker 2: would you do this summer? Did anything fun? I feel
- 3:09Speaker 2: like I was getting serious for a second.
- 3:11Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I was? No, I wasn't getting serious. Okay, good. What
- 3:14Speaker 2: did I do? When does the summer start? I guess
- 3:17Speaker 2: the summer starts in, I would say, mid, I would
- 3:20Speaker 2: say June 1st. June, okay. No, nothing fun.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I just have this movie coming out, so we started,
- 3:29Speaker 3: you know, I think, someone like the 10th or something
- 3:31Speaker 3: like that started press okay um so i did some
- 3:35Speaker 3: press in la and then flew to london and suppressed
- 3:38Speaker 3: so so that's it nothing nothing terribly exciting yeah well
- 3:42Speaker 3: i'm not we're not like those kind of people i
- 3:44Speaker 3: like like you know like go vacation people.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's not your life no oh yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You always i think when you picture like um actors
- 3:53Speaker 1: you always picture them in like a little bit of
- 3:55Speaker 1: like kind of like a rapunzel castle or like somebody's
- 3:58Speaker 1: having shrimp you know like that kind of thing i
- 4:00Speaker 1: think that's like a romanticizing of the of the.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Right yeah i mean maybe i should yeah i mean
- 4:08Speaker 3: maybe that's what's missing um but uh but no it's
- 4:13Speaker 3: not um i mean i have yeah like but it's
- 4:15Speaker 3: not a regular thing it's definitely not like oh here's
- 4:18Speaker 3: summertime let's let's do that summer experience got it but
- 4:21Speaker 3: yeah i i have that Like fantasy sometimes. Sometimes I
- 4:24Speaker 3: see myself in slow motion jumping off a pier into
- 4:27Speaker 3: a lake and shit.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But I haven't done it yet. Okay, okay.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So if you're not even living out the fantasies you're
- 4:35Speaker 1: supposed to be doing, then what the hell am I
- 4:37Speaker 1: freaking sitting over here parading them around?
- 4:39Speaker 2: I don't know. What are you doing? What did you
- 4:41Speaker 2: do with your summer? That's a great question. It was
- 4:44Speaker 2: your question. Thanks. Thanks, dude. Oh, this is a real
- 4:50Speaker 2: pickleball game here. No, no. No, no, it's good. I
- 4:55Speaker 2: just didn't want credit for something. It wasn't my question,
- 4:58Speaker 2: so I just felt like I had to acknowledge that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: No, well said. Yeah, that's a great question. I think, yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I didn't do that much. I just kind of like worked,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I guess. Oh, I did get to see my niece
- 5:13Speaker 1: graduated from high school.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That was pretty cool.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Just to watch somebody go through that moment where they're
- 5:22Speaker 1: kind of like, you know, where the training wheels kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of come off of life.
- 5:26Speaker 2: A little bit, you know? Uh-huh. So I thought that
- 5:28Speaker 2: was pretty neat. And I watched Eddington the other day. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Really cool. Cool. I never graduated. You didn't graduate high school? No.
- 5:38Speaker 2: To be honest, I'm not sure I even made it
- 5:39Speaker 2: to high school. Right. Okay, that's fair. Oh, damn.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That explains things so much better than I think watching you.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You're like, oh, this guy didn't even went to high school.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I want you to have all the information.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Like, I'm an open book, and I just want you
- 5:55Speaker 3: to really understand what you're dealing with here.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Okay. As we move forward, okay? Well, let's talk about
- 6:01Speaker 2: Eddington first, because... It was awesome.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And it was just like one of the neat things
- 6:07Speaker 1: that I thought, and this is just me being kind
- 6:09Speaker 1: of judgmental, just so we can frame this for the
- 6:11Speaker 1: conversation is, um, you.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Want some water?
- 6:13Speaker 3: I was thinking about it. I was deciding in my head,
- 6:17Speaker 3: I was going, how thirsty are you? How much plastic
- 6:20Speaker 3: do you want? What, what are we going to do here?
- 6:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 3: That's, that's, that's the way, that's what you saw. So
- 6:27Speaker 3: I was like, I looked at the bottle. I said,
- 6:29Speaker 3: it looks good. I need the water. But it's got
- 6:31Speaker 3: a lot of plastic in there.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 3: And I was trying to decide, no, no, that just
- 6:35Speaker 3: feels like, then I just feel like I'm.
- 6:39Speaker 2: No, I think you should. Let's get in it. I believe, look,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I agree. I think everybody's about to try to stop
- 6:44Speaker 2: drinking out of plastic. Right. But this is special water. Oh,
- 6:50Speaker 2: it's artesian? Artesian? That's nice. nice. Yeah, it's nice. Oh,
- 6:57Speaker 2: that came down on a Sherpa's back or something. That
- 6:59Speaker 2: was definitely.
- 7:00Speaker 3: So now that counteracts the plastic, I think.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I think everybody's worried about microplastics and everything. Recent
- 7:08Speaker 1: studies have revealed that glass bottles now contain significantly more
- 7:12Speaker 1: microplastics than plastic bottles.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Thank you so much. I did not know that I
- 7:18Speaker 3: was going to get an education here.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Thank you. So crazy. I like it.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Um, speaking of so crazy, man, let's talk about Eddington, dude.
- 7:25Speaker 2: It was so intense.
- 7:26Speaker 1: The stakes kept rising. Like, um, because you have like this,
- 7:30Speaker 1: it's kind of like a time capsule moment. This is
- 7:32Speaker 1: what I felt like to me. It felt like this
- 7:34Speaker 1: time capsule moment from very recently, um, where you have
- 7:39Speaker 1: the COVID mandates, you have the BLM movement going on.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You have, uh, a change in, um, the overlords of media.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So now like information is coming out of everywhere, right?
- 7:52Speaker 1: So there's a lot of like new, but also errant
- 7:54Speaker 1: information in the world. You have all of these things
- 7:57Speaker 1: happening at the same time. Then you have this sheriff,
- 8:01Speaker 1: Joe Cross, who's kind of like an authority figure, right?
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, that's who you look to when there's something
- 8:06Speaker 1: going on. But also at the same time, everyone's challenging authority.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So it's just, and then he starts to lose authority
- 8:15Speaker 1: over himself. So there's like, there's so much going on.
- 8:19Speaker 1: My question, I'm going to get to it too. When
- 8:22Speaker 1: there's so much going on like that as an actor,
- 8:24Speaker 1: are you thinking like in each scene, are you thinking
- 8:27Speaker 1: I have to embody all of these like little tributaries
- 8:32Speaker 1: or at once? Or do you take that like scene
- 8:36Speaker 1: by scene or moment by moment?
- 8:39Speaker 2: What's that like? Cause I mean, it, it got so intense.
- 8:42Speaker 2: This is a viewer.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You're like, I don't even know if I can watch
- 8:44Speaker 1: this much less trying to be the guy who's, uh,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, spreading the jam, you know?
- 8:49Speaker 3: I think it probably, I think it changes. I think
- 8:56Speaker 3: there are days where you're probably hyper aware of the
- 9:03Speaker 3: arc and you're kind of like following this trail that
- 9:06Speaker 3: you're creating. And there's other days where that gets in
- 9:11Speaker 3: the way and you just go like, shut the fuck up.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And just like, listen to what this other person say
- 9:16Speaker 3: right in front of you and just react to that.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Like we're not in our own lives. We're not always
- 9:21Speaker 3: aware of like our arc.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So I think it's like, you're just trying to balance
- 9:26Speaker 3: it out. And sometimes you can be so in the
- 9:27Speaker 3: moment that you do, you forget that it's like, you
- 9:30Speaker 3: just came and we're not, we're shooting the scene in
- 9:33Speaker 3: six weeks, but you just have come from whatever it's a,
- 9:38Speaker 3: you know, intense emotional situation. And now you're coming to
- 9:41Speaker 3: this scene. You gotta, we have to carry that over.
- 9:44Speaker 3: So I think that it changes us, like something that
- 9:47Speaker 3: is just like alive and moving and changing. And of course,
- 9:53Speaker 3: you have like a partner, which is the director And
- 9:59Speaker 3: in this case, the writer director, Ari Aster, um, who
- 10:02Speaker 3: just like knows the script obviously inside and out and
- 10:06Speaker 3: the characters. And we had been working, going through the script,
- 10:11Speaker 3: you know, for a year prior to shooting, um, where
- 10:14Speaker 3: we'd get together, um, who were actually in, in New
- 10:17Speaker 3: York primarily. and just read through the scripts and talk
- 10:21Speaker 3: about things. So you're kind of going through and you're developing,
- 10:26Speaker 3: you're developing the character and you're following this kind of
- 10:30Speaker 3: plan that you have sometimes in your head, some things
- 10:32Speaker 3: you've discussed, some things you're just spontaneously coming up with.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And And then you just, then you just hope for
- 10:43Speaker 3: the best. You just go, at some point you go, well,
- 10:47Speaker 3: cause here's the thing. This is the crazy thing about it.
- 10:50Speaker 3: You'll like, you'll have this fucking plan that you're like,
- 10:53Speaker 3: fucking clever. I figured this shit out. It goes from
- 10:57Speaker 3: this scene. Then I go do that in that scene.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I'm doing that in that scene. You have this brilliant
- 11:01Speaker 3: fucking plan. And you're like, I'm kind of like a genius.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And then in editing, they'll like pull two of those
- 11:07Speaker 3: scenes out, like take them out or like put them
- 11:10Speaker 3: somewhere else. And then it's like, it's much better. And
- 11:14Speaker 3: you're like, I'm not a genius. I don't fucking know anything.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Like if this shit works, it's because the fucking director
- 11:23Speaker 3: is making this work.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You know?
- 11:24Speaker 3: So like, that's the, it's like, it's something very humbling
- 11:29Speaker 3: about that process.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And you have to do the work you have to.
- 11:35Speaker 3: do the work as if every moment is part of
- 11:37Speaker 3: this character's life. And then there's moments that aren't even
- 11:40Speaker 3: in the script and on screen that you're trying to,
- 11:42Speaker 3: I don't know, uh, think about and feel and kind
- 11:47Speaker 3: of like take on as, as, as your experience, but
- 11:52Speaker 3: you don't really know what's going to end up in
- 11:54Speaker 3: the movie. Um, so yeah, it's, it's, um, it's, I mean,
- 11:59Speaker 3: it's a pretty cool experience. It's, it's kind of like life.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Can you plan all this shit and plan your day
- 12:06Speaker 3: and your life and your year and, and then shit happens.
- 12:10Speaker 2: It changes.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Things get moved around and sometimes they're characters. They just
- 12:13Speaker 3: get like taken out.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah. And sometimes you have a plan, like you're going
- 12:17Speaker 1: to show up to like a something and you're, everything's
- 12:19Speaker 1: going to be perfect. You're going to have flowers for the, this,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and you're going to have the best thing to say.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And then next thing you know, you're running late or
- 12:25Speaker 1: you get there, your plane gets delayed and now you
- 12:27Speaker 1: show up and you're, You're getting there as everybody's leaving
- 12:30Speaker 1: and you're the last person and you brought the 30th
- 12:33Speaker 1: thing of flowers and everything's different.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Can you tell at your, with your level of experience,
- 12:43Speaker 1: can you tell when you stuck the landing on a scene? Like,
- 12:45Speaker 1: can you like, is there a moment when that thing
- 12:47Speaker 1: cuts and you just like, can be like, that was
- 12:50Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Like I serviced it well.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I've had that feeling before and it always turned out
- 12:57Speaker 3: to be terrible. And I was wrong. My experience is
- 13:03Speaker 3: that any time I'm like, fuck yeah, okay, got it.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It's terrible.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And the times where I'm like, I don't know if
- 13:15Speaker 3: I even landed.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I'm not sure what happened yet.
- 13:19Speaker 3: That's usually when things, when I like look back at
- 13:22Speaker 3: it and I go like, Oh, I think that was good. Um,
- 13:25Speaker 3: that's just my experience. I don't know what other actors
- 13:28Speaker 3: are like, but yeah, I, I guess maybe cause I,
- 13:32Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know if the, the things
- 13:35Speaker 3: that I like, um, are like, um, capturing something that's like,
- 13:43Speaker 3: feels like intangible, um, and hard to define and like,
- 13:49Speaker 3: When you kind of like nail it, I don't really
- 13:52Speaker 3: like that kind of acting or maybe I'm not good
- 13:56Speaker 3: at it.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe there's a sense of bravado that comes with
- 14:00Speaker 2: that that's not as true to life, you know? Because
- 14:03Speaker 2: it's very rare in life maybe that you just feel
- 14:05Speaker 2: like you kind of nail it probably. Maybe. I mean,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I guess there are some people that walk around the world.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Like nailed it. I know. Hulk Hogan. Who else? Who
- 14:24Speaker 2: else is somebody that really freaking nailed it?
- 14:27Speaker 1: Oh, Nicolas Cage in Family Man. Have you seen that movie?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Uh-uh. God. We got to sit together on a plane
- 14:33Speaker 2: one time.
- 14:37Speaker 1: You know what was interesting about, and thanks for talking
- 14:39Speaker 1: about this with me, man, because it's, you know, it's
- 14:42Speaker 1: just cool to get to, like, Like it's rare you
- 14:43Speaker 1: get to look at a piece of art and you
- 14:44Speaker 1: get to talk to the paint, you know? The interesting
- 14:47Speaker 1: thing about Joe Cross, the character that you played, is
- 14:50Speaker 1: that there were moments I'm like, am I cheering for
- 14:56Speaker 1: this guy? Like I just felt, I was like, how
- 14:58Speaker 1: do I feel? Because he's who you're kind of going
- 15:01Speaker 1: through the film with, through Eddington with. I'm like, how do, like,
- 15:07Speaker 1: do I feel for him? Do I feel against him?
- 15:10Speaker 1: the whole time I was just like, I just knew
- 15:12Speaker 1: I just felt he made me feel right. Are you
- 15:15Speaker 1: thinking about that as we're going, as you're going through it,
- 15:17Speaker 1: like how you're trying to make us feel, or that's
- 15:19Speaker 1: not something that an actor is doing.
- 15:23Speaker 3: So something that Ari and I talked about, something that
- 15:26Speaker 3: was very important to me from the beginning was that, uh,
- 15:34Speaker 3: that Joe challenges like the audience's preconceived idea of what
- 15:39Speaker 3: like a conservative small town sheriff is.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Um, and, uh, I didn't.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Know how, you know, I don't really know how or
- 15:50Speaker 3: what that really meant, what that, what that really looked like.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Um, and I think at some point.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I just, um, I just wanted to care about him.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Like I just wanted to, I just wanted to like
- 16:04Speaker 3: take politics or philosophy or anything like that out of
- 16:10Speaker 3: the picture and just go like, what's the, what's the man.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And I think that I really think that we've found
- 16:16Speaker 3: that through, uh, his relationship with his, his wife. Cause
- 16:20Speaker 3: I think that's really where, um, he's like most, uh,
- 16:27Speaker 3: like his, his power authority is like threatened. or non-existent
- 16:33Speaker 3: um and so that it becomes like the catalyst for
- 16:36Speaker 3: his kind of desire for um more authority and power
- 16:43Speaker 3: it's one of the things as you said there's there's
- 16:45Speaker 3: several things kind of happening but then once you start
- 16:50Speaker 3: working i think maybe you're thinking about that less. It's
- 16:54Speaker 3: less becomes about, it's almost like you, that you start
- 16:58Speaker 3: the process almost like an audience member yourself. Cause you're
- 17:01Speaker 3: kind of outside this thing, looking in, you're reading the
- 17:04Speaker 3: script and he's kind of like, it feels like it's
- 17:07Speaker 3: like this, this character over there, you know what I mean?
- 17:10Speaker 3: And you're trying to get to it or bring it
- 17:14Speaker 3: to you or whatever that process is.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I don't fucking know.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Um, And so you're starting like that and you're kind
- 17:20Speaker 3: of going like, oh, how do I feel standing back
- 17:23Speaker 3: here when this guy does this? And if he said
- 17:28Speaker 3: that line in this way, how would that make me feel?
- 17:32Speaker 3: And then somehow throughout this process, you hopefully start coming
- 17:39Speaker 3: together and kind of merging to some point where it's
- 17:43Speaker 3: not me standing outside of the character saying, not in
- 17:47Speaker 3: like some bullshit, like I'm the character, but just like,
- 17:49Speaker 3: you're just, um, hopefully experiencing something versus like telling an
- 17:57Speaker 3: audience what they should feel.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Um, and I think ultimately the director is probably most
- 18:04Speaker 3: responsible is totally responsible for telling the audience how they
- 18:10Speaker 3: should feel.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:11Speaker 3: So I think it's part of me is like to,
- 18:13Speaker 3: just to take on the experience and be honest in that,
- 18:16Speaker 3: that moment, So.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You have to really trust that director then, huh? Oh, yeah. Fuck, yeah. Fuck.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Ari's outside.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I think he does not want to be mentioned in here.
- 18:25Speaker 1: He's trying to edit from outside. He just bleeped his
- 18:27Speaker 1: own name out. Dude, totally, totally.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 18:31Speaker 1: But that just shows you how locked in he is
- 18:33Speaker 1: to being on the ones and twos. A lot of
- 18:37Speaker 1: times with acting, the actors get blamed for when things
- 18:40Speaker 1: go bad, right?
- 18:41Speaker 2: Right. I feel like as a viewer, you're like, oh, shit,
- 18:44Speaker 2: you know?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Like, Rodney Dangerfield sucked in that, you know, or whatever. Well, yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 1: But it's really the directors. The director doesn't take as
- 18:51Speaker 1: much heat, I don't feel like. Well, so the actor
- 18:59Speaker 1: is the one that you're looking at. So, like, if you're, like,
- 19:02Speaker 1: hating a movie and you're just looking at somebody's face,
- 19:04Speaker 1: you're just going to blame them, right?
- 19:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that makes sense.
- 19:07Speaker 3: But conversely, like, If you're also like, this rules, this
- 19:10Speaker 3: is the best time, they get the credit, right? So
- 19:12Speaker 3: like actors oftentimes, I think more often than not, the
- 19:16Speaker 3: actors are getting credit and the director's.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Like, I fucking made all of this work. Yeah. You fucking.
- 19:25Speaker 3: grateful shits it must be like very frustrating.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Like a parent almost with a child you're like this
- 19:31Speaker 1: thing looks handsome because i chased that lady down the
- 19:36Speaker 1: street and he's just wandering around here with his good
- 19:39Speaker 1: looks fucking hiding important shit in the backyard yeah because
- 19:43Speaker 1: we bought him a shovel for his birthday right.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Like exactly yeah and i mean there's you're talking about
- 19:48Speaker 3: you're having multiple takes to choose from right yeah and
- 19:54Speaker 3: so you know director's going through and ultimately with the
- 19:57Speaker 3: editor selecting this take sometimes they're pulling the audio from
- 20:01Speaker 3: another take they're putting in there just the What lens
- 20:07Speaker 3: is used and how it's lit and the angle and
- 20:10Speaker 3: whether you cut to a wide shot or you're close,
- 20:13Speaker 3: all of those things, it just happens. Even for me,
- 20:15Speaker 3: I just watch a movie also. I'm not aware of that.
- 20:18Speaker 2: All the time. Yeah, that's a good point. It's not
- 20:19Speaker 2: like you're a wizard watching it or something. I'm definitely
- 20:23Speaker 2: not a wizard watching it. Yeah. So I imagine it's
- 20:27Speaker 2: very frustrating for them.
- 20:32Speaker 3: And I think anyone that's that's in the business knows this, right?
- 20:36Speaker 3: So when the movie, when the movie doesn't work, even
- 20:40Speaker 3: if the, if the general public is like, you.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Know, fucking so-and-so sucks. Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 3: The director probably knows that they really mean them. So they,
- 20:52Speaker 3: they carry that. I think it's probably, I think it's
- 20:54Speaker 3: probably the, I imagine it's the hardest job.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Being a director? I think, I mean, in, for making movies. Right.
- 21:02Speaker 2: The hardest job.
- 21:03Speaker 1: You haven't directed Did you ever think about it sometimes?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Are there moments where you're almost there?
- 21:08Speaker 2: I don't know that.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I like to delegate and I'm really indecisive. It's like
- 21:20Speaker 3: particularly under pressure and it feels like there's a lot
- 21:25Speaker 3: you're constantly under pressure I think as a director. But
- 21:30Speaker 3: I don't know I think What's appealing about it, the
- 21:38Speaker 3: idea is the collaboration with all of the heads of
- 21:43Speaker 3: the different departments. As an actor, you're collaborating with costume
- 21:49Speaker 3: and hair and makeup and props and stuff. And then,
- 21:52Speaker 3: of course, the director. But the director is just like everybody.
- 21:57Speaker 3: And that sounds nice and appealing.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I don't know. It might be a pain. Oftentimes.
- 22:05Speaker 3: You know, they're like, I'll call you back, but I
- 22:09Speaker 3: have to choose which forks we're using for the dinner scene.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Right. You're like, which fucking forks? Yeah. Like, there's five
- 22:17Speaker 2: forks to choose from. I got to choose which one
- 22:20Speaker 2: we're using. Yeah. Like, that kind of sucks. Oh, yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And it sucks if you're watching a movie and you
- 22:25Speaker 1: see a fork that fucking is out of place, too.
- 22:28Speaker 2: You're like, these people... This isn't the Titanic. You blame
- 22:33Speaker 2: the actor. Oh, honestly. Because it's the actor's face, and
- 22:36Speaker 2: you're just like, I fucking hate this movie. Oh, you're like,
- 22:38Speaker 2: Dunkirk sucks. You see the silverware in that thing? That's
- 22:42Speaker 2: how you feel sometimes.
- 22:46Speaker 1: You know what was interesting to me? And if some
- 22:49Speaker 1: of these questions are novice about acting and directing, thank
- 22:52Speaker 1: you for entertaining them. One thing that was interesting to
- 22:56Speaker 1: me about Joe Cross, about your character, Well, for one,
- 23:00Speaker 1: he was so imperfect, right? And yeah, when you saw
- 23:03Speaker 1: him at night and he was like feeling like those
- 23:04Speaker 1: feelings when he'd come home from his day and he
- 23:07Speaker 1: finally got to deal with what he really wanted to
- 23:09Speaker 1: deal with, which was love, right? That just felt like
- 23:13Speaker 1: so human to me. And he was his villain and
- 23:18Speaker 1: his hero, right? He was the creator of his possibility
- 23:23Speaker 1: and his pain at the same time. And it was
- 23:28Speaker 1: just so like ah, it was, fuck, it was just
- 23:33Speaker 1: a lot to watch sometimes. Does that just feel like
- 23:36Speaker 1: regular life? Like, could you relate to him as a human?
- 23:39Speaker 1: Does that make any sense, that question?
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, it does.
- 23:43Speaker 3: First of all, happy to talk about whatever. I also
- 23:46Speaker 3: don't– I just realized, like, I was just talking about
- 23:50Speaker 3: movies and directing.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I don't fucking know anything. I have no idea what
- 23:53Speaker 2: a director does.
- 23:55Speaker 3: So I just, like– I don't want you to go, like, oh,
- 23:59Speaker 3: now I understand what directing is. Because I guarantee you
- 24:03Speaker 3: directors are like, this guy doesn't know shit.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah. So I just want to clear that up. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Dude, he's got some ideas. I'll tell you that about him. Well,
- 24:17Speaker 1: you didn't walk in here like you definitely had brought
- 24:20Speaker 1: the weather with you. You certainly came in here like
- 24:23Speaker 1: a victim of the storm. Or just like a regular
- 24:25Speaker 1: guy who just got in. Anyway, go on, sir.
- 24:28Speaker 2: No, no, no, no.

- 26:09Speaker 1: were boating or if we floated away on something. Me
- 26:11Speaker 1: and my buddy got stuck out in the sun. And gosh,
- 26:16Speaker 1: when we got back to shore, dude, I just, I
- 26:19Speaker 1: drank everything. I drank every, I was drinking out of
- 26:23Speaker 1: dang hoses, faucets. I would drink out of somebody's mouth
- 26:27Speaker 1: if they left it open for 30 seconds because I
- 26:30Speaker 1: wanted to stay hydrated. But things are different now. That's right,

- 27:19Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I don't remember what we were talking about.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I just felt like he was the cause of
- 27:24Speaker 1: his own possibility and his own pain constantly. And it
- 27:28Speaker 1: made me think so much about life, but it was
- 27:29Speaker 1: so real to see him that way. could you relate
- 27:33Speaker 1: to that in your own life?
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yeah, of course. Yeah, just normal, huh?
- 27:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I think all the characters in this,
- 27:44Speaker 3: I felt when I read the script, I was like, oh,
- 27:46Speaker 3: I kind of like, I recognize myself in all of
- 27:49Speaker 3: these characters, actually. And sometimes it's like, you know, it's a,
- 27:54Speaker 3: an embarrassing admission. And then, you know, there's just, there's things,
- 28:02Speaker 3: particularly that, that time. And I think in some ways, yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 3: maybe we're always, we're always, maybe we're always responsible for
- 28:17Speaker 3: how we respond to what happens in the world.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 28:21Speaker 3: So we're not like, so much of like just what
- 28:24Speaker 3: happens in life you don't have any control over. Um,
- 28:29Speaker 3: but how we respond to that, we have control over. And, um,
- 28:33Speaker 3: I know I constantly fail in, in my response or
- 28:39Speaker 3: at least don't respond in the best way. Um, in
- 28:43Speaker 3: the moment, right. I respond like emotionally. And so I definitely,
- 28:47Speaker 3: I definitely, uh, identified with, with that. And that's, that's Joe.
- 28:52Speaker 3: I mean, he kind of like just keeps making mistakes.
- 28:58Speaker 3: And he's so like, he's, he's so desperate to like
- 29:08Speaker 3: have some control. Like, just like, let's just, he just wants,
- 29:12Speaker 3: he's just like, you know that feeling when you're like,
- 29:14Speaker 3: I just, I need things to just stop for a
- 29:17Speaker 3: fucking second so I can breathe. And then like, your
- 29:21Speaker 3: desire to like make things stop, just make things ramp
- 29:24Speaker 3: up more and more. And then you just like trip
- 29:26Speaker 3: and you fall down the stairs. It's just like, it's
- 29:29Speaker 3: like that. Um, yeah, that escalation. Oh, I kept imagining
- 29:33Speaker 3: the whole time. I'm like, Oh my God, this guy
- 29:35Speaker 3: is fucking just like, has put too much cheese on
- 29:39Speaker 3: his burger, dude.
- 29:39Speaker 2: This guy is just.
- 29:41Speaker 1: And then I kept imagining the whole time he has
- 29:42Speaker 1: to take a pee and he can't even get to that.
- 29:44Speaker 1: He's just dealing with like activists and people throwing things
- 29:47Speaker 1: through wind. And then he gets home and he sleeps
- 29:50Speaker 1: in his glasses. Like he literally gets up and just
- 29:52Speaker 1: has to like bow. And he's like, suddenly it's all
- 29:54Speaker 1: in focus again. And his brain has barely had time
- 29:57Speaker 1: to rest. And I'm like, God. Somebody fucking just put
- 30:02Speaker 1: a sniper, shoot a Xanax into this dude or something.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Somebody fucking give him a damn Percocet suppository or something.
- 30:09Speaker 2: This guy needs some relief, you know?
- 30:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 1: And then it also was like, God, especially during that time,
- 30:15Speaker 1: like a lot of mania came along with a lot
- 30:17Speaker 1: of those different things that were happening in the world, right?
- 30:21Speaker 1: And there's still a lot of mania remnants from that.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And I was like, God, everybody needed some relief. You know,
- 30:27Speaker 1: it feels like that as a society. Sometimes we need
- 30:29Speaker 1: some relief sometimes. But we have everything we need, it
- 30:32Speaker 1: feels like. So it's kind of a weird juxtaposition.
- 30:35Speaker 2: To be in. Yeah, so what's the plan? Yeah, what
- 30:38Speaker 2: is the plan? I don't know. I don't know. It
- 30:42Speaker 2: just feels like we're just doing the opposite of a
- 30:43Speaker 2: hug right now. That's right. That's right. Did you feel
- 30:49Speaker 2: when you watched that movie, like you got to the,
- 30:51Speaker 2: like you were like, this will be a reminder, this will, like,
- 30:55Speaker 2: help influence people in a better way?
- 30:58Speaker 1: This could be like a seed of like where we've
- 31:00Speaker 1: been and where we can grow from?
- 31:02Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, I don't know. I don't know.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Like movies are surprising, those things that connect with people
- 31:09Speaker 3: and actually influence culture. And sometimes they don't.
- 31:17Speaker 2: I don't really know what it is. That's crazy to
- 31:20Speaker 2: ask you. No, no, no.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think it's a fair question. I think in some
- 31:23Speaker 3: ways– I think all I can do is think about
- 31:28Speaker 3: like myself versus like the, the effect that it has on,
- 31:31Speaker 3: on me. And, you know, in some ways there was, um,
- 31:36Speaker 3: there was like, I felt like I had permission to, um,
- 31:40Speaker 3: to laugh at myself, like a way to like, I
- 31:42Speaker 3: kind of evaluate some of that, like mania, as you say,
- 31:46Speaker 3: like we're like fucking crazy. Like the summer of 2020,
- 31:48Speaker 3: it was crazy. And people were, I love that you
- 31:53Speaker 3: said it's the opposite of a hug. And it really
- 31:55Speaker 3: was like, everyone was so kind of fractured and fragmented
- 31:58Speaker 3: and just all isolated in our own worlds, like quite
- 32:02Speaker 3: literally physically isolated. And then everyone was just so online
- 32:07Speaker 3: and kind of fed their own.
- 32:10Speaker 2: An algorithm. Fucking thing. Yes.
- 32:12Speaker 3: That just further kind of propelled them into their own lanes.
- 32:16Speaker 3: It's like even people in the same houses and their
- 32:18Speaker 3: own place. And, And there was just like this, um,
- 32:22Speaker 3: I just remember everything felt so aggressive. Like even there
- 32:29Speaker 3: were like, there were like signs that were supposed to
- 32:31Speaker 3: be like, like we trust science and we, you know,
- 32:37Speaker 3: we love all people. And, but some of like, even
- 32:39Speaker 3: that felt like confrontational.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Right. Like.
- 32:45Speaker 3: It felt like no matter what anyone said, everyone was like,
- 32:51Speaker 3: this is my position, and my position is fucking right,
- 32:54Speaker 3: and you can go fuck yourself. It's just like people
- 32:57Speaker 3: went fucking nuts. We, not people, we did.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Yeah, all of us.
- 33:02Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like you're calling anybody out. It feels
- 33:05Speaker 1: like we're all inclusive.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I agree.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Yeah. It's amazing what a time. It was like the
- 33:08Speaker 1: most recent time capsule that was the most insane. Like
- 33:11Speaker 1: usually they're like, we found a can of ham from 1930,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you know, and we're going to invite everybody over and
- 33:17Speaker 1: the girls will sing and then we'll open it, you know.
- 33:20Speaker 1: But this was like, Jesus Christ, we just found the
- 33:22Speaker 1: most insane time capsule.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And the mud is still wet. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Yeah. But then it was a reminder, have we even
- 33:31Speaker 1: recovered from all of that? What happens to the human
- 33:34Speaker 1: being as we go through all that and then you
- 33:36Speaker 1: have all this pent-up anger and confusion and everything?
- 33:39Speaker 3: I think we wanted to forget or were pretending to
- 33:42Speaker 3: forget because, yeah, it was ugly. Yes, it was ugly.
- 33:52Speaker 3: It was ugly, but it was also really painful. And
- 33:55Speaker 3: I think a lot of people were like, Fucking scared.
- 34:01Speaker 1: But then also the character of the mother, I didn't
- 34:03Speaker 1: even think about that, of Joe Cross's mother.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Mother-in-law. Mother-in-law. Oh, that was his mother-in-law.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Of the mother-in-law, because then you're like.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Did it just change everything now for you to know
- 34:17Speaker 3: that it's not his mother?
- 34:18Speaker 2: No, it made it a little bit more crazier.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I'm like, so you're telling me he teamed up with
- 34:23Speaker 1: her mom and now they're the one?
- 34:25Speaker 2: It's just like....
- 34:27Speaker 1: But then that is something a lot of people have
- 34:29Speaker 1: in their life. Like, Oh, well I talked to my
- 34:31Speaker 1: girlfriend's mom all the, and now we're team or the,
- 34:34Speaker 1: or the, you know, Oh shit, man.
- 34:36Speaker 2: That guy was screwed, dude. Yes. Ross was fucking screwed. Yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 2: But he, but he did, but he's, he's screwed himself. Yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 1: He was the, he was the holder of his possibility
- 34:51Speaker 1: and his pain at the same time.
- 34:52Speaker 2: You know, it was pretty crazy.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Um, Yeah, what was meeting Ari Aster like? I watched
- 34:58Speaker 1: some interviews with him. He seems like a charming guy.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Yes. I met one of his partners, Lars Knudsen. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Dude, I had some video calls with him a few
- 35:10Speaker 1: years ago.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Really? I was looking it up. But why?
- 35:14Speaker 1: We were just talking about something, maybe thinking about an idea.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I had an idea about a movie. And David Spade
- 35:20Speaker 1: and I just wrote a movie and made a movie.
- 35:22Speaker 1: We paid for it ourselves that we made, right?
- 35:24Speaker 2: So it's fantastic. fucking very unique. It's done? It's done.
- 35:28Speaker 2: We're editing it now. Are you in it? I'm in it.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I'm like his sidekick. He's like the main guy.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 35:35Speaker 3: So you know all about making movies, and then you
- 35:39Speaker 3: were just plain dumb asking me questions, setting me up
- 35:42Speaker 3: to be like, well, let me tell you something, Theo.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Not at all, dude. Here's how it's done. No, dude. No,
- 35:51Speaker 2: we have no idea what we have, dude.
- 35:54Speaker 1: We may have a damn visual diorama that a couple
- 35:56Speaker 1: of kids put together for their kindergarten class. You know,
- 35:59Speaker 1: I was playing a busboy, you know, not Commodus, you know?
- 36:02Speaker 1: So I think it's definitely, this is way different, I think.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It's a different, this is a, is that the right
- 36:08Speaker 1: way to say it, Commodus?
- 36:09Speaker 2: I don't fucking know. Anyway, no, I didn't know anything.
- 36:12Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just learning little things, but I mean,
- 36:15Speaker 1: I get to talk to somebody who's been, you know,
- 36:17Speaker 1: who has had a plethora of experience.
- 36:20Speaker 2: So you talked to Lars. Lars is great. Lars is
- 36:23Speaker 2: a producing partner of Ari. Yeah, and I just realized
- 36:25Speaker 2: that yesterday when I was looking it up. I was like, oh, wow.
- 36:28Speaker 2: I had spoken with this guy before, but.
- 36:30Speaker 3: When I met Ari, we didn't meet. We spoke on
- 36:37Speaker 3: the phone, and it was the summer of 2020 is
- 36:43Speaker 3: when we first spoke. And he had this film that
- 36:48Speaker 3: he wanted to make called Bo's Afraid that he wanted
- 36:51Speaker 3: to talk to me about. And so I just spoke
- 36:56Speaker 3: with him on the phone. And I mean, the first
- 36:58Speaker 3: time that I met him, this is so crazy, this
- 37:01Speaker 3: is so COVID, was when I got to Montreal to
- 37:06Speaker 3: shoot that movie. And it's a while because it just
- 37:12Speaker 3: was like normal. We just accepted it. But that's very strange, right?
- 37:15Speaker 3: To not meet the director, like the actor and the director,
- 37:19Speaker 3: not like be in a room together until they're two
- 37:22Speaker 3: weeks out from shooting.
- 37:23Speaker 2: It seems risque. Crazy.
- 37:26Speaker 1: It seems risque to me to do something like that.
- 37:29Speaker 1: It's like you could interview your cellmate or whatever, but
- 37:31Speaker 1: you're like, no, I'll just wing it in there. You know,
- 37:34Speaker 1: like you could have a little small Q and a
- 37:36Speaker 1: with your Sally.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Um, yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 1: So was there something that inspired you or led you
- 37:41Speaker 1: to think? Cause I think what's interesting also in, in, in, uh,
- 37:45Speaker 1: the career of an actor is you start to realize, well,
- 37:47Speaker 1: I only have so many times that I get to
- 37:49Speaker 1: do this and times that I can afford to be
- 37:52Speaker 1: away from family and friends and just, take on such
- 37:55Speaker 1: energy in my life. And so I'm sure it starts
- 37:58Speaker 1: to become a little bit more poignant, like the choices
- 38:01Speaker 1: that you do make. So was there something about him
- 38:04Speaker 1: or his processes that made you think this is the
- 38:07Speaker 1: right choice?
- 38:07Speaker 2: Or how do you land on a choice like that?
- 38:11Speaker 3: You never know if it's the right choice or what
- 38:12Speaker 3: it is, right? You're just going, I mean, honestly, I
- 38:15Speaker 3: just liked him. We started talking, and the way that
- 38:19Speaker 3: he talked about the film and the way that he
- 38:22Speaker 3: talked about the character I knew that it was personal
- 38:27Speaker 3: and I could tell that, um, it meant so much
- 38:31Speaker 3: to him that he loved making movies and it meant
- 38:34Speaker 3: so much to him and that he like, I think
- 38:40Speaker 3: I just got a sense that he was tireless. Um, and,
- 38:45Speaker 3: and like, you know, you, the director like really has
- 38:51Speaker 3: to be obsessed, right? Cause they do have to, They
- 38:54Speaker 3: have to do so much. Which fork am I fucking choosing, right?
- 38:58Speaker 3: Do you want them to actually care about that shit?
- 39:02Speaker 3: Or else you're going to be watching the thing, Dunkirk,
- 39:06Speaker 3: and you're pissed off.
- 39:07Speaker 2: They have plastic silverware? Right, right. In fucking 1812? And
- 39:10Speaker 2: I'm sure that wasn't the right year for Dunkirk either,
- 39:15Speaker 2: so we're all bad.
- 39:17Speaker 3: No no that's that sounds good um so so I
- 39:24Speaker 3: think that that's that's maybe what you know right away
- 39:27Speaker 3: I was like okay well this you know he he
- 39:29Speaker 3: literally making movies. And I, I know that just from
- 39:33Speaker 3: talking to him on the phone. And he's funny. I mean,
- 39:37Speaker 3: I think that's the biggest thing. Sometimes you're just like,
- 39:41Speaker 3: do I want to hang out with this fucking dude?
- 39:43Speaker 2: I'm sure. That's right.
- 39:46Speaker 3: And it's like, Because you go through a whole range
- 39:50Speaker 3: of motions to make a movie. I mean, yeah, it's
- 39:52Speaker 3: a movie and you're safe. But in the moment, your
- 39:57Speaker 3: body doesn't know that it's not real. You know what
- 40:00Speaker 3: I mean? It's just some shit that you're doing, right?
- 40:02Speaker 3: And so things can get like there can be a
- 40:07Speaker 3: lot of emotion or a lot of energy. And yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 3: having somebody that you really like. It feels important. And
- 40:19Speaker 3: they paid me so much money.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Oh, God. No, they didn't. Give me some of it.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Give me a little. Dude, side quest really quick.
- 40:28Speaker 1: So my friend Josh used to live like I think
- 40:30Speaker 1: somewhere kind of like over by East LA. And I've
- 40:36Speaker 1: known who you were like a decent amount of my
- 40:38Speaker 1: life because most of the world knows your name. But
- 40:41Speaker 1: he said that you lived in his area. And I
- 40:42Speaker 1: was like, well, what if I opened up a shoe
- 40:44Speaker 1: store called these boots are made for Joaquin, right? I
- 40:48Speaker 1: was like, just to get to meet you. That would
- 40:50Speaker 1: be the goal. The only goal of the whole store
- 40:52Speaker 1: was to get to meet you. And anyway, that was
- 40:55Speaker 1: just like something funny that we thought of one day.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But if you saw that store, say if you'd driven
- 40:59Speaker 1: by a couple of times, like, do you think you
- 41:01Speaker 1: ever would have stopped in there?
- 41:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 2: And I would have just like cleaned the place out.
- 41:07Speaker 2: For sure. Where was this? You just come in with
- 41:10Speaker 2: a pistol. You're like, oh my.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Oh, that's not what I meant by clean the place out.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I was going to do it legally.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Oh, support the business. Yeah. Thank you, dude. Yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Does clean the place out mean like I'm here to
- 41:22Speaker 3: fuck shit up?
- 41:23Speaker 1: I think the, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that terms
- 41:25Speaker 1: have changed over time.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't mean it that way. I apologize. See,
- 41:30Speaker 2: these are the. These are the mistakes you can make,
- 41:34Speaker 2: but thanks for saying you would have stopped by dude.
- 41:36Speaker 2: That's awesome. No, it's, it's a great, how could I not?
- 41:39Speaker 2: It's a great store. Maybe you should still put it together.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I'll tell you this one day, if I make enough
- 41:45Speaker 1: money and I can open up a small place that
- 41:47Speaker 1: I could afford to do it on the side as
- 41:50Speaker 1: a thank you to you for coming on the podcast
- 41:53Speaker 1: and talking with me, I'll open up a small one
- 41:55Speaker 1: near you and I'm all, I'll surprise you. I feel
- 41:58Speaker 1: like something like that would be pretty special. Um, When
- 42:01Speaker 1: it comes to acting, has your approach to acting changed
- 42:07Speaker 1: over the years? Like, as you notice your own evolution
- 42:10Speaker 1: with it? And if you get tired of talking about acting,
- 42:12Speaker 1: we can talk about something else.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Has my approach changed? I don't, maybe and maybe not.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think so. You know, you're
- 42:28Speaker 2: definitely more self-aware. It's just like you are. Yeah.
- 42:33Speaker 3: It's just, it's just like the nature of, of doing something,
- 42:38Speaker 3: you know, that's like visible and you're out there for whatever,
- 42:43Speaker 3: 30 fucking plus years or whatever.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Um, maybe more than maybe 42. But are you, wow,
- 42:51Speaker 2: that's a long time.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Uh, but self-aware in the sense where you're like, um,
- 42:58Speaker 1: you know, you, all your like, like, do you start
- 43:02Speaker 1: to know all the, like the, the palette you have
- 43:05Speaker 1: as an actor or does that continue to evolve or
- 43:08Speaker 1: does some of it get lessened because you're getting older
- 43:12Speaker 1: and you can't, you know what I'm saying?
- 43:13Speaker 2: You couldn't do the same thing.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Maybe you could as a, as a 27 year old
- 43:17Speaker 1: actor or 21 or 18 year old, like, does that
- 43:20Speaker 1: palette grow or does it dissipate kind of?
- 43:25Speaker 2: Um, I don't know, maybe, maybe both things.
- 43:28Speaker 3: And maybe sometimes it's, maybe it just gets refined. Maybe just,
- 43:34Speaker 3: you know, it's a similar, it's just like, um, a
- 43:40Speaker 3: richer color or less rich. I don't know what, you know,
- 43:43Speaker 3: I don't know what it is. Um, maybe that's, that's
- 43:47Speaker 3: what happens. Hopefully you have, uh, a director that also
- 43:52Speaker 3: is familiar with your work and can like challenge you if,
- 43:55Speaker 3: if you're not challenging yourself. Um, but I think like,
- 44:01Speaker 3: you know, it was like, I don't know, but I imagine, um,
- 44:05Speaker 3: You know, it's like 20-year-old basketball players coming out and,
- 44:10Speaker 3: you know, he's just fucking just going for it, trying
- 44:13Speaker 3: to make a name, right?
- 44:14Speaker 2: He's just doing the thing.
- 44:15Speaker 3: And at some point he becomes, you know, he's suddenly
- 44:18Speaker 3: like one of the guys on the team. It's a
- 44:22Speaker 3: different kind of pressure of like taking that shot, right?
- 44:26Speaker 3: Because it's like when you're young, it's like, oh, it's
- 44:29Speaker 3: scary because it's like, oh, if I fucking miss, maybe
- 44:32Speaker 3: I don't get another opportunity. But then when you're older
- 44:35Speaker 3: and established, it's like, if I miss, there's going to
- 44:39Speaker 3: be a lot of press about his miss. And people
- 44:43Speaker 3: are going to be like, you have paid way too
- 44:44Speaker 3: much money to fucking miss that shot.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that dude should not be missing at this point.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Like, get the fuck out.
- 44:50Speaker 2: He wasn't even wearing sneakers.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Like, what kind of guy do we have here?
- 44:54Speaker 3: So this is, you know what I mean? So I think, like,
- 44:56Speaker 3: that's what I mean by, like, being self-aware. Like, at
- 44:59Speaker 3: some point. you feel pressure in a different way. Like
- 45:03Speaker 3: I think it's always, no matter what, it's always like
- 45:05Speaker 3: you always feel the pressure.
- 45:06Speaker 2: But yeah, I think when.
- 45:08Speaker 3: You're 20 years old, it's just different. And nobody's really
- 45:17Speaker 3: looking at you. You don't feel pressure when you walk
- 45:20Speaker 3: on set.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Right, so that kind of goes away, but there's a
- 45:23Speaker 1: different pressure of like it's really, these overalls are hanging.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Off my shoulders here. Yeah, I don't understand that.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't either, actually. I was trying to be
- 45:34Speaker 1: like the weight of the world on the shoulders. I
- 45:36Speaker 1: was thinking of something that goes on shoulders, and then
- 45:38Speaker 1: overalls came out, and.
- 45:39Speaker 3: I'm like, fuck, dude. No, no, it was good. You
- 45:42Speaker 3: should stick with it. No, it doesn't sound good.
- 45:47Speaker 2: A screenplay.
- 45:47Speaker 3: No, I just felt stupid. I was like, oh, this
- 45:50Speaker 3: is a really cool saying. I don't know it.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Are there moments when you're acting where, because there's little
- 45:56Speaker 1: moments whenever I do stand-up where I feel like people
- 45:59Speaker 1: that are like, relative there's something there'll be a moment
- 46:01Speaker 1: where I feel like my brother my sister like there's
- 46:03Speaker 1: sometimes where I turn a certain way and it almost
- 46:05Speaker 1: feels like my mom do you ever feel like you
- 46:07Speaker 1: channel like certain parts of you like people come out
- 46:10Speaker 1: of you in certain moments I think I notice it
- 46:13Speaker 1: more as I get older too does it make any
- 46:15Speaker 1: sense to you uh sure like you ever turn towards
- 46:18Speaker 1: your kids and say something you're like I am that
- 46:21Speaker 1: was just my dad like that wasn't even me doing that.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Yeah I'd I mean, I definitely, in my life, have
- 46:28Speaker 3: a lot of my dad in me.
- 46:31Speaker 5: Really?
- 46:31Speaker 2: Were you surprised that you got so much of it?
- 46:35Speaker 2: I was, and I think I was, like, the last
- 46:38Speaker 2: to know. But it was like, yeah, like that, like that.
- 46:43Speaker 2: And then, like, at some point, I was like, I
- 46:44Speaker 2: think they were saying, like, dad, like, those are not
- 46:47Speaker 2: good qualities. And so.
- 46:50Speaker 1: like sleeping in his car dad like right and so.
- 46:54Speaker 3: I then became aware of it but no i think
- 46:57Speaker 3: i think my dad actually um.
- 47:02Speaker 2: I was aware.
- 47:02Speaker 3: From fairly young that um i i think he's probably
- 47:11Speaker 3: the greatest uh influenced or i was influenced by his
- 47:17Speaker 3: life in my work um i don't know if this
- 47:20Speaker 3: is making sense um i think i modeled so many
- 47:25Speaker 3: characters that i've played after him um he's he's dead
- 47:31Speaker 3: he's been dead for a while so i can talk
- 47:33Speaker 3: shit about him.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so he can't disagree with you. Yeah, I was like,
- 47:37Speaker 2: what are you going to say? And if he is
- 47:40Speaker 2: going to do– I just went because I was like,
- 47:42Speaker 2: I don't– don't make a joke about it. That's even worse.
- 47:46Speaker 1: No, we weren't sure if he died until you said it.
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you. Don't look it up because
- 47:50Speaker 1: he might not be dead. We don't– You channel him
- 47:56Speaker 1: right now and it's turned into him.
- 47:58Speaker 2: That'd be crazy. Um, wow. That's kind of interesting. Yeah.
- 48:01Speaker 2: I think, you know what?
- 48:02Speaker 1: Sometimes I think I'm like my mom and I never
- 48:04Speaker 1: thought I would be. And I was always even like
- 48:07Speaker 1: rebellious against my mother. And then I'm like, you gotta be.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Sometimes I look in the mirror. I'm like, you gotta
- 48:12Speaker 1: be fucking kidding me.
- 48:14Speaker 2: You know?
- 48:15Speaker 1: But then at the same time, it's like, that was
- 48:17Speaker 1: probably in my life. That was a connection that I
- 48:19Speaker 1: wanted the most anyway. So it's interesting that that's what
- 48:22Speaker 1: God gave me or that's how it, you know, that like, oh,
- 48:25Speaker 1: it's like this is kind of what I always wanted
- 48:27Speaker 1: the most. And it's oddly that's part of the most
- 48:32Speaker 1: of what I am, you know.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Just interesting how sometimes things like that work out. Was
- 48:37Speaker 1: your dad a funny guy?
- 48:38Speaker 2: He was very funny. I mean, he was a ham. Oh,
- 48:42Speaker 2: he was. Yeah, like he loved– doing skits for us kids. Really? Yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 2: That's cool of him. And, like, joking around. Yeah. He's very... Yeah,
- 48:58Speaker 2: he was. And what would he do?
- 48:59Speaker 1: Like, death of a salesman or death of... I don't
- 49:01Speaker 1: know what he did for a job. Death of, like,
- 49:03Speaker 1: an employee somewhere?
- 49:06Speaker 2: Or he would just have fun moments? One of his favorites, which....
- 49:14Speaker 3: Always made us laugh was something called the fly skit
- 49:19Speaker 3: where he just was literally, he just was a guy
- 49:21Speaker 3: reading a paper on a bench, and a fly starts
- 49:26Speaker 3: buzzing around, and he waves it away. Then he tries
- 49:30Speaker 3: to hit it with the newspaper. He rolls it up
- 49:33Speaker 3: and hits it. And finally, he goes in his bag
- 49:36Speaker 3: and he takes out some bug spray and And he
- 49:39Speaker 3: goes to spray it just as it lands on his
- 49:41Speaker 3: nose and he sprays himself in the face and then
- 49:43Speaker 3: like gets all fucked up from the bug spray and
- 49:48Speaker 3: falls over. And like when you're like six years old,
- 49:51Speaker 3: that's the most genius thing you've ever seen. Especially because
- 49:54Speaker 3: we didn't have like TV and shit when I was young.
- 49:58Speaker 3: So that was like. High-level entertainment.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Your dad was the damn history channel when you were
- 50:04Speaker 1: a kid back in the day. You know what I'm saying?
- 50:06Speaker 1: That's so funny to think about. I never thought of
- 50:08Speaker 1: my parents were like the channels that we had. Because
- 50:12Speaker 1: we had some channels, but it wasn't like that. It
- 50:14Speaker 1: wasn't like every moment was access. So really, people were
- 50:17Speaker 1: looked at as a lot more entertainment. Like, let me
- 50:20Speaker 1: go poke this bear and see what I can get
- 50:22Speaker 1: him to do a little bit.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Oh, that's cool, dude. My dad... Oh, it was so funny, dude.
- 50:28Speaker 1: My dad was very old when I was born. He
- 50:30Speaker 1: was like, he was born in 1910 or whatever. And
- 50:35Speaker 1: so he was like, everything was very like, you know,
- 50:39Speaker 1: and my brother and I would go to, he ran a,
- 50:42Speaker 1: the world's fair was in new Orleans when I was
- 50:45Speaker 1: growing up and he ran a, I don't know if
- 50:47Speaker 1: he ran, but somehow he, they let him have the
- 50:49Speaker 1: keys to go in there in the morning. And he,
- 50:53Speaker 1: it was like a souvenir shop for the world's fair or, postcards,
- 50:57Speaker 1: stuff like that in the French Quarter. And he'd always
- 50:59Speaker 1: pay this guy, this guy who was a clown, right?
- 51:02Speaker 1: He'd be like, go get the kids a couple of
- 51:05Speaker 1: wieners or franks, you know, hot dogs. So we'd like,
- 51:08Speaker 1: I just remember like one of my early memories is
- 51:10Speaker 1: just being with my brother in this clown that my
- 51:13Speaker 1: dad had given a couple shackles to running us down
- 51:15Speaker 1: the street to get us a couple of fucking hot
- 51:17Speaker 1: dogs and i was like oh it's gonna be a
- 51:20Speaker 1: fucking interesting road.
- 51:22Speaker 2: So how old were you uh when he moved on when.
- 51:27Speaker 1: He moved on i was 16 and i was it
- 51:29Speaker 1: was weird because i was like embarrassed to my dad
- 51:31Speaker 1: because he was older so i didn't want to introduce
- 51:33Speaker 1: him to people i always had like this weird relationship
- 51:35Speaker 1: but then i think as a kid it was fascinating
- 51:38Speaker 1: to watch this older guy that uh.
- 51:43Speaker 2: That you love so much, but you're also trying to
- 51:45Speaker 2: keep hidden, you know?
- 51:47Speaker 3: So how, when you were 16, I do not, I'm not,
- 51:51Speaker 3: I'm going to fail at math. I'm trying to figure out,
- 51:54Speaker 3: I'm trying to figure out if.
- 51:55Speaker 2: That's how my son is going to think of me.
- 51:59Speaker 3: I was 45 when he was born.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Huh?
- 52:04Speaker 1: I think you're going to be okay. It's going to be,
- 52:06Speaker 1: do not get a cane early though. If you get
- 52:08Speaker 1: a cane early, he'll know. I thought about this. I
- 52:12Speaker 1: was just thinking about yesterday because I got to knock
- 52:14Speaker 1: somebody up in the next two years because I need
- 52:15Speaker 1: a family.
- 52:16Speaker 2: But if you get a cane early, he's going to know. Right.
- 52:20Speaker 3: So when I had my first son, I was your age.
- 52:25Speaker 3: And it is something that I think about constantly. Because
- 52:31Speaker 3: I just want to be able to be a fun
- 52:35Speaker 3: dad and not be this.
- 52:38Speaker 2: So did your dad die suddenly? Can I ask? Yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 2: it's okay, man.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he got cancer, and I didn't even know about
- 52:44Speaker 1: cancer that much, and he died pretty quick. It was
- 52:48Speaker 1: pretty sad because suddenly he got like, yeah, it was
- 52:51Speaker 1: just kind of sad. I mean, it's all sad, but
- 52:54Speaker 1: then it was, you know, I don't know. Well, of
- 52:57Speaker 1: course it was sad. One might think we're fucking, you know,
- 53:00Speaker 1: everybody was like getting the champagne out, but he was
- 53:03Speaker 1: a ridiculous person. But my dad couldn't see. He would drive.
- 53:07Speaker 1: He would take us somewhere, but he couldn't see the
- 53:09Speaker 1: lights or anything. So he'd be like, is it red
- 53:11Speaker 1: or green? And suddenly we'd get it wrong and he'd
- 53:12Speaker 1: fucking just drive out.
- 53:13Speaker 2: It was all baffling. That sounds kind of cool. Yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 2: I think he would have dug it. I gotta say.
- 53:19Speaker 2: He would have dug it, dude. Wow. You would have
- 53:22Speaker 2: dug it. Did your dad have cancer or no? Yeah,
- 53:25Speaker 2: he did. He did? He did. Yeah. And here's something
- 53:28Speaker 2: else that's fucked up. Okay. My sisters lost his ashes. No. Yeah.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Every couple months, somebody will send out a text to
- 53:39Speaker 3: the thread and be like, has anybody found Dad's ashes?
- 53:44Speaker 3: And it's because all he could do is fucking laugh
- 53:49Speaker 3: because it's horrible.
- 53:53Speaker 2: It's just horrible. It's almost really like his last performance.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I mean, that's such a fucking great.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Totally.
- 53:59Speaker 2: It's a great bit. It's so fucking great. That's, that's,
- 54:04Speaker 2: you're right. It's his best moment. Dad's ass anybody found.
- 54:09Speaker 2: I love that text too, you know?
- 54:11Speaker 3: Just randomly every once in a while, because it'll occur
- 54:14Speaker 3: to one of us. I'll be like, yeah, which, where
- 54:17Speaker 3: the fuck are dad's asses? He sent that out and
- 54:22Speaker 3: still don't know. Here's the thing. I mean, I'm blaming
- 54:25Speaker 3: my sisters. Might've been me. I don't know. The thing is,
- 54:30Speaker 3: is that it's one of those real, like, you know,
- 54:32Speaker 3: sometimes you have a, vague memory of like, I know
- 54:35Speaker 3: we were in here.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:37Speaker 2: No idea. I have no idea. Like, yeah.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Do you ever walk in the kitchen? You're like, it's
- 54:42Speaker 1: kind of like that thing. Like what was I in
- 54:44Speaker 1: here to get? You know, where did, where did I
- 54:46Speaker 1: put those?
- 54:46Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. Oh man. Thanks for sharing that. That's funny.
- 54:50Speaker 2: I'm glad we even got to laugh about your dad
- 54:52Speaker 2: today and my dad. That's cool.
- 54:53Speaker 1: I think our, I think spirits, I think like, When
- 54:56Speaker 1: you laugh about somebody from your life or something like that,
- 54:59Speaker 1: I think they feel that on the other side.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I think there's a big connection there that we don't
- 55:03Speaker 2: know about.

- 57:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Have you ever met someone and you were like, I
- 57:39Speaker 1: could play that person? Because that would be kind of
- 57:42Speaker 1: like I feel like if I were an actor, that
- 57:44Speaker 1: would be like my power. Like you would corner somebody
- 57:47Speaker 1: in a room of a fucking party and be like,
- 57:49Speaker 1: I could play you in a heartbeat.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Huh. You know?
- 57:52Speaker 4: Does that happen with the good actors? I don't know.
- 57:55Speaker 4: You have to ask good actors. I think that I–
- 58:02Speaker 4: this is called This Past Weekend.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Yeah. How'd you come up with that? Because I just
- 58:08Speaker 2: started on a Monday. To be honest. I didn't really.
- 58:15Speaker 2: That's good. We didn't have a real drawing board there, Mr. Phoenix.
- 58:21Speaker 2: I'm trying to think.
- 58:25Speaker 3: I don't know that there's ever been anyone where I
- 58:28Speaker 3: was like, I have to play that. I've been inspired
- 58:31Speaker 3: by like, front, like I've stolen shit from like friends
- 58:36Speaker 3: and people that, that I've met, but I've never, uh,
- 58:40Speaker 3: I don't think that I've ever like, like I'm going
- 58:43Speaker 3: to play.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Who? Right. Exactly. Oh yeah. You get to choose. You're
- 58:50Speaker 2: the one who can do it. Yeah. But that's the
- 58:52Speaker 2: interesting thing. Yeah.
- 58:53Speaker 1: I just wonder if you had that ability, does that
- 58:56Speaker 1: start to get into, into some people, but then maybe
- 58:58Speaker 1: that's like some ego in there too. Um, You play
- 59:02Speaker 1: the broken so well, man. You really just have a,
- 59:05Speaker 1: I mean, you are just like a harp that is
- 59:09Speaker 1: missing something. strings you know but it's really beautiful to
- 59:13Speaker 1: watch a lot of times what is that why do
- 59:17Speaker 1: you think that do you get attracted to those roles
- 59:19Speaker 1: it seems like you must in some ways yeah and
- 59:23Speaker 1: sorry to just kind of like pigeonhole you and your
- 59:26Speaker 1: abilities I know you have a lot of abilities Um, uh.
- 59:33Speaker 2: I definitely, I don't know why I guess. Um, okay.
- 59:38Speaker 3: So, uh, my dad was, uh, he was, uh, he
- 59:47Speaker 3: was a complicated dude and he, um, there was like
- 59:53Speaker 3: a lot of like, um, I want to say dichotomy,
- 59:57Speaker 3: but I don't even really, I'm not entirely sure if that's,
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: if that's what.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: I think, but it is like conflict or something.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: And, and, and cause, um, it was really, it was
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: complex or something like very like, um, sensitive and sweet
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: and thoughtful about him. And he grew up in a pretty,
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: pretty tough situation. And, um, you know, was in juvie,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: very young and had this very splintered family background. And,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: you know, it was like, they're pretty affected.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Like he, you know, so you'd call like a shit kicker.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: And he was like, so, but he also was like,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: he also was like, like a fucking hippie was like,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: you know, was, you know, vegan. Like, um, so he,
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: So I think he was so fascinating to me growing
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: up because I think I saw those things and that
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: existed inside the same person.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Yeah, let's get fucked up and get a salad on. Exactly.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I mean, that's a crazy thing to even think. you
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: know and i'm sorry to say that just a little
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: bit like no it's.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: It's great it was it was great and it was
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: perfect and i needed that moment um so i i
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: think like that was really again i think maybe i
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: was i'm not you know i don't know what but
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: i think i was attracted to those roles maybe as
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: a way of.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Whatever, you know, connection or just like familiarity, curiosity. You
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Like I feel like he was kind of like the
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: most interesting person to me. And I probably wanted to
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: like try and understand him more or something.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Maybe, or maybe not. I don't really know. But so
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: I think maybe that's, that's part of it. And then like, yeah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: I just, I, I love us. One of those people
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: that whatever limited, exposure I had to, uh, film or
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: television when I was young. Um, I loved like fucking drama.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Like I, I loved conflict. I mean, I did, I
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: loved when shit was like, you know, this scene don't,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: it seems very bad. It was about to happen. It
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: seems very bad. Oh no, you are a fucked up person.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: I was fucked up. How could you have done that? Uh,
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: I think that that was interesting to me. And I
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: think I also wanted to like, try to, um, I
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: always was like curious. Uh, I think I didn't believe
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: that there was like, uh, like good people and bad people.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: So like, I was like interested, like, okay, well, this
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: is somebody that's made these like mistakes or bad decisions.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: How could that, how could that happen? Like, what are those,
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: what led to that? I think it's just like a
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: curiosity about that.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, And then some of it, honestly, straight up,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: some of it also is like, it's not like I
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: walk in and it's like the full fucking salad bar
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: and I can choose whatever.
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: There's like a full thing. And then they come in,
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: they're like, you have, you can actually just from here
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: to there, you can have those four options. You go,
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: but what about there? You go, no, no, you don't.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: That's not for you. So part of it is like,
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: get in where you fit in.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Part of it is like, I had a face that
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: just oftentimes looks criminal from like very, from a very
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: young age. I noticed that, like, when I went into
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: the fucking store with my friends, I was the one
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: that was followed around by security. They, like, were like,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: and I didn't understand why. But at some point, I
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: think I kind of realized, I was like, oh, okay,
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: so I'm getting these parts.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: And, like, Yeah, I'm the guy and the master, yeah.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, or, you know, playing
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: Skeletor in the He-Man commercial, not He-Man. Oh, that's what
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: you're saying. Like, oh, this is kind of interesting. I mean,
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: so part of it is, like, that's just also the reality, right?
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: And there's things where you're like, oh, but I can
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: do that. I want to do that. And they're like, no,
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: you can't. And in some ways, maybe they're right. There's also, like,
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: a point where you're like, okay, how do I– how
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: do I achieve that thing that I'm chasing there in this,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: in this thing? Like maybe that's the better route for me.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Like maybe that's the more honest thing. And like, I'm
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: chasing an idea that I think that somebody maybe has
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: of me as an actor and I want to dispel that.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: No, what do you, who, that's not what's important.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: But maybe it's valuable to, to like chase that quality,
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: but through this, this character's experience.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Um, that's fascinating, dude. Like the Joker. Yeah.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Like I could totally see exactly what you're talking about. Like,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: and I'll think a lot of times in life we
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: have this, we're chasing an idea of ourselves or a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: projection that we thought someone else had of us or
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: even just the, um, the archetype.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: I can't even freaking remember that word dude from freaking
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: science or whatever.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: The art type of what we think something is, you know,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: like the high school quarterback or the prom queen. And
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: for our whole life, we're like, instead of being like, well,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: why don't I just fucking put on this comfortable shoe
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: that fits? Or why don't I try to be the quarterback?
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: But he's in the fucking school play and he doesn't
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: have a football, right? And he's a fucking lives in
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: a dungeon or whatever.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: And he has a hunchback.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: Yeah, because it's probably good to like, Challenge yourself and
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: challenge expectations, right? To not just go like, oh, I
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: guess I'm just that and I'll just be that, right?
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Like there was, I think I did have an ambition,
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: but really my ambition was about like an experience. I
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: felt like I don't want my experience to be limited.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Like that's not fair. I don't want to just play
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: this role in this way. Like, that's, I want, my
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: appetite was bigger than that. Like, it was bigger than
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: I think what I was, what I was told. I remember, like,
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: I remember when I was young, I remember doing this
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: movie and one of the other actors was talking to
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: the director and he was like, wouldn't it be cool if,
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: you know, Joaquin did, you know, this kind of movie,
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: you know, kind of like so-and-so. And he mentioned this
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: other actor that was like my peer who was like
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: the actor, right? And the director was like, yeah, but
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: I mean, Joaquin is no so-and-so.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: And he was like, and the other director was like, dude,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: that's so fucked up to say. The director was like, oh, no, no,
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: I just, I mean that in the best way. Like,
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: you're a character actor. He's no Fred Armisen.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: Character actors, yeah, it's like kind of code for like,
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: you can't really, like, you're never going to really get there,
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: but you'll work.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And that fucking pissed me off. But here's the thing.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: But it pissed me off because I was like, no,
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: I have more. There's more that will come out of me.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: But I think I ultimately appreciate it because it made
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: me go like, well, how do I find that way?
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: How do I find more? And yeah, I'm not going
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: to be able to get in this door. And like, yeah,
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: I shouldn't play the quarterback. Like it doesn't make sense.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Like if I walked out, then you go like, well,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: unless it's like, yeah, the defense is going to be
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: on the field a lot. Yeah. It's this guy's a
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: hockey quarterback.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: What's going to be, unless it's like, Some 80s school comedy,
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: like kids comedy where like they're a disaster.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: You know, maybe that version of it.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Or let's say like siphon in a unique quarterback from
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: another realm kind of.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: And his thing is, by the way, let's not give
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: away too much because maybe this is something we should
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: work on.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: But no, I think there was something else you said
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: in there and I forgot what it was a second ago,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: but it was really profound about Or as profound as
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: people can be.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: In a fucking motel somewhere. This is a hotel. You're right, actually.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Which is because in case they're listening. No, you're right.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: You're right. Actually, I don't want them being upset.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: This is a very famous hotel where a lot of
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: fucking important people have overdosed.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: So let's give it its fucking due.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And that is true. We're at the Chelsea Hotel, and
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: it is very unique and fun. This is a great
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: place to be whenever you're in New York City, I think.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: You're tricking me now, I.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: Didn't set you up at all.
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: No, I for real had paranoia and I was like,
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: I don't want to be a person who's talking shit
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: about them.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: But Motel Chelsea also. It kind of sounds dope, to
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: be honest. Motel Chelsea? Yeah. It sounds better than Hotel Chelsea.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Oh, it sounds like somebody my dad met. You know
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: what I'm saying? That's a problem too, dude.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Sorry. So anyways. No, it's all fun. But I think
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: you said exactly what you wanted to say there. And
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: I think it's interesting, yeah.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Because I think it pertains just even outside of acting
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: is how can we do more? Or, like, how can
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: I find a way to apply myself to this thing?
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: How do I adjust, like, what is a new way
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: to do something? If I want to get to my goal,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: and if it's even going to be possible, is there
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: another route, right? Like rerouting, when your app says that,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: it's kind of like that, which I think is something
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: that people do when they are– when they really have
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: a goal that they want to try and attain, you know,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: I just think it's interesting.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: It's like, of, of, of course, right. Resistance, right. It's
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: like resistance is, is important. And, you know, just reading like, um,
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: just been reading about dinosaurs, my kid.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: And, and you're like, Oh shit.
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: Motherfuckers were like, hold on. There's a very large dinosaur.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: It's got big teeth.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: It's nasty. It's mean. What do I do? I'm just
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: a fucking vegetarian dinosaur. What do I do?
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: And just like evolution is like, oh, you start growing
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: spikes out of your back or fucking horns and shit.
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: And it's just like it's a reaction to the environment.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: Those motherfuckers, it took millions of years. to react, to change,
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: and to evolve. And so sometimes when you're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: the director was mean to me. He says all he means. Like, yeah, well,
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: it's fucking nothing comparatively, right? So it's just, yeah, kind
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: of meeting the challenge in some ways, like trying to
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: get to a place of appreciating the resistance.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: And reacting to the resistance. I don't know what I'm
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: saying about that.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: No, because most of life is, but I think it's
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: fascinating to think how badass a fucking villain vegan or
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: vegetarian a fucking brontosaurus was. Brontosaurus is big. That was
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: the solution. It just got like bigger.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Who was the biggest vegetarian dinosaur? Let's give them a
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: little bit of shine here.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: You know? And I'm sure Josh Brolin will get to
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: play them in a movie. But we won't. This is
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: the brontosaurus. Oh, the dreadnoughtus. Look at that limousine. I
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: have not read about him. How long have you been
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: a vegan for? Vegetarian, vegan? Vegan since I was three
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: and a half years old. This has been a whole
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: part of your life? Yeah. Wow. Yeah. You know what
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: I do like sometimes? Radishes. Yeah, I just had some.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: You know what I just made yesterday? I made radishes
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: and jalapenos together. Fantastic. Lemon. Salt. I like having some
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: salt and water. I like fasting recently. I've been doing
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: it a lot. Have you? Really? What did you do?
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Just nothing.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Just water? Yeah, just water and a little bit of salt.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: Put some salt in your hand. But you even look
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: forward to the salt. I would even go to the gym.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Oh, wait. You went to the gym? I would go
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: to the gym. I'd get home like, when I get home,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I'm having my fucking pinch of salt. How long do
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: you fast for? 73 hours is the longest that I
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: did so far. But I'll just do a day. I
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: did like 36 hours the other day. I feel like
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: I'm doing like a day a week now, 24 hours.
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: Yeah it's great it's good for you but are you
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: sure you should work out while you're doing it no
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: I'm not sure maybe look into that I don't know
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: but I remember doing that and then I didn't feel.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Good and maybe it was that I want to ask
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: you one more question before you leave because I feel
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: like we've had a nice conversation so I don't want
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: to push the bounds of it oh push it it's
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: okay you can do whatever you want man.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: It's fine do you feel like did you like being
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: a son is that a weird question Because I liked
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Biggest Son.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: Because I never thought about it.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I just thought about it like as we're sitting here
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: thinking about that we were both, you know, we have
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: that in common.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Do you have siblings? Yeah, I got three siblings, one
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: boy and two girls. One boy, two girls, yeah. Well,
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: I was the second son.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: And my brother was like quite a force and was
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: definitely like, I don't know, it was like mythical or
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: Shakespearean or, you know, maybe it was because he died
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: or something. But he's like, you know, he was like
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: the first son. And he was incredible. And he was
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: such a force within our family. He was kind of
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: like the guiding light in some ways. He's the one
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: that acted first. And we used to sing on the streets.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: And he played guitar and kind of like oversaw.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: He was like the lead singer? Yeah.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: He was the lead singer and he was the guitarist
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: and kind of oversaw everybody. And he, and he was
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: such a, uh, like a, a strong, but gentle force
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: within the family. So I think in some ways, if
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: I'm honest, a lot of my life, like growing up,
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: I kind of was like, you know, like, Right.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: What am I going to do? Yeah.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: What kind of like, you're like, and not a way
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: of like, oh, this sucks.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: Just kind of like, cool. Yeah. Like, cool. Like, feel secure. Yeah.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Shit's handled. That's taken care of. Yeah. Everyone's fucking handled.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Three at last.
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. And then I have three sisters. And
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: they're also like amazing and strong in the best way.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: And like, you know, forces, like each of them just, Brilliant.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: And I probably, yeah, for like, yeah, I don't know
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: that I, you know, I just, I never felt any
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: weight or pressure about like being the son or anything
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: like that, you know.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Maybe it falls on the first child a lot. I
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: never thought about that.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: I'm sure. I don't know if it fell on him
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: or if he just like took it. You know what
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: I mean?
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Right. Sometimes it's just like undeniable. You know what I mean? Like,
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: look at the two of us. I'm the son. That's
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: what I'm saying. Sometimes. You know what I mean? He's
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: working freelance over here, okay? It's kind of the truth, right?
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: And there was no, like, I never, you know, we also,
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: there was like a, four year age difference between us.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: So I never, I never felt those things like, you know,
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: in movies, it was like the brothers are like competing
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: and like angry.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah. Like Shakespearean brothers. That was funny. You didn't
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: intend that to be funny. Yeah. I did not intend
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: that to be funny. Yeah. It still was our brothers. Oh,
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: thank you. Yeah. I'm trying to think of other brothers. Anyways, um,
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: this is good. Jackson five. Maybe this is a good,
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: that's good. Um, But that's interesting. I don't know.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: I was just thinking about being a son because I
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: never really even thought about it myself that much. But yeah,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: if you have that brother, you kind of have that
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: get out of jail free brother. You're like, oh, this
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: guy's got that, dude. He's a fucking lead singer. I'll
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: be back here. I'm the second son. My brother was
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: kind of like went AWOL. So I was like, oh, shit,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: I got to fucking pick up. I got to like.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: I got to do some recycling here, you know? Right.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: He's great now, but he was just like kind of
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: like rogue, you know? He was like more of like
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: a troublemaker, just like lost.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: That's what I mean. He was like a lost. Right.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Like a lost guy. But now he's great. And now
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: he's like my hero.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: He's like, you know, it's cool to like be able
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: to still be like that everything changes over time.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: And what's the age difference? Two years. But yeah, he's
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: like a brave.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: What do I admire about him? He has a lot
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: of empathy. and he's good for like being patient with me. Um, yeah,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: it's like he has time for me.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: And that was something that I think growing up in
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: our place, it was just like, I never, I didn't
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: even know it was possible, you know, but yeah, he like,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: he makes time for me.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: He makes time for me.
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: And I think that that's pretty special. That's good.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Um, You know, one thing that you guys talked about
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: in Eddington was like whose land it is, right?
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: That was like a little bit of a theme.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: It was kind of a sub-theme, I felt like, with
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: the Native American and you guys were like the county
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: or the township abutted up against native lands. Where do
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: you feel like it's kind of so weird where we
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: are in the world right now because I feel like
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: people are still warring over lands, you know? And there's
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: ice raids. People are getting taken off of lands. I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: don't know. I just feel like sometimes I thought we'd
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: be further along in this.
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: I don't really know Westerns, but I think that that's
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: a common thing in Westerns. At least that's the feeling
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: I have when I think about Westerns. It might not be,
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: but just the idea of this is my land, and
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: I'm the protector of this land, and I will fight
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: for this land.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: And so.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: I think that is something that comes up in Eddington.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: And I think that both figures, the Sheriff Joe Cross
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: and the mayor, Ted, played by Pedro Pascal, both believe
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: that they're fighting for the land, fighting for this town,
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: and that there that their idea for this land is
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: is the right one yeah I was really moved by
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: something that you said when you talked about the war
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: in Gaza and I think that's really courageous to speak
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: about it and you spoke about it like in such
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: a like honest way that I just thought was like
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: really beautiful and it's crazy because like what's going on
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: is absolutely so fucking horrible there's no justification for fucking
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: children starving to death in a conflict like it's that
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: simple right you don't have to understand geopolitics or anything
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: like that just to to get that. I know there
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: are conflicts all over the world constantly, but that's something
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: that is, I'm just, it's shocking like how maybe we're
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: afraid to talk about it. And oftentimes you're made to
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: feel like you're stupid because you don't understand geopolitics and
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: kind of like, well, I don't have to understand geopolitics.
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: Like you have to understand like human rights.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: It's a feeling it feels like to me, you know, uh,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: for me, I don't know. I don't care about, I
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: don't know if I care about you. I mean, but
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: it's hard to say I live on a land that's
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: kind of been taken from other people, but here I
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: am saying like about geopolitics and I understand that. But
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: then at what point do you not say something, you know, like, Yeah.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: And we're in a time and it just like in
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Eddington kind of like, and I'm not comparing like any
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: of these two things, but people are watching things on
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: their phones and you can see for the first time,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: some of this like travesty in real time and it
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: just fucking hurts, man. It's like, and then you're like,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: am I crazy for not saying anything? But then here
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: we are on a land where, you know, people are
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: living in allotments now, native American allotments and that sort of,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: you know, um.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's a great deal of pressure. And just, honestly,
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: just you saying that makes me fucking feel like, you know,
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: under pressure. So like, okay, yeah, what am I talking about?
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: But I think sometimes not acknowledging it is wrong. Obviously,
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I don't have the fucking solution, but war always fucking sucks, right?
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Conflict sucks. But what's happening, it just is crazy to
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: me just like, just the food distribution that's happening now.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: They're locking, they're like hiding it from people or that
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: they're tricking people or that they're, they have to go
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: so far to get it.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: It seems.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: And why is it like, why is it not the,
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: the organizations that are typically overseeing that and to have,
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: you know, half a century of experience or decades of
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: experience in the different NGOs. And they're not the ones
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: that are overseeing the food distribution. It's a, it's a new, um, organization,
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: the Gaza humanitarian foundation. Um, and, and so that is, um, yeah,
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: it's just really troubling and, and heartbreaking. So it just
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: feels like, how do we not acknowledge that? And, you know,
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: in some way. And so, and I think that you
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: did and I, um, I just like, I don't know,
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: like when you did that, if you were like, if
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: that made you nervous doing it or.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I think I felt scared. Yeah.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: Well, I was, it was, uh, I think that it was,
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: it was courageous and it was meaningful and, uh, and
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: I think it matters. And, and, um, so, you know, I'm,
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: I'm straight up. I'm really here today because I was,
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: I was so moved by what, by what you said
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: and just like the courage.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: To do that. I was wondering why you came to
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: be honest, to be very honest in some ways or not,
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: not in some ways, but, but thank you, man. I
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: can't even believe that you saw that.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: And, uh, yeah, not thank you, but like, Yeah, I
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: think that shit just like, I don't know. It's just like,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: it's crazy to think like I'm laying in bed at
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: night and I'm warm and I'm okay. And to think
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: that there's like some kid who's never going to put
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: these pieces together, you know? And even the kids who
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: have to be alive are the people who still have
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: to be alive. What life do they have, you know?
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: Like what, like, I don't know. It makes me like,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: I don't know. And then you start to feel ashamed
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: of your own existence in some ways.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: You almost feel ashamed to be alive in some ways
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: in a little bit of a way. Does it make
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: any sense?
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: Do you think? Yeah. I understand the feeling. Yeah. It's
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: a feeling. I totally understand that, that, that feeling, but, um,
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: but thank you, man. Thank you for, uh, well, yeah,
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: not thank you, but yeah, I don't know. It's, it's interesting,
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: you know, but I.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Think it's important today that we, that you do say
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: something like you say, you know, and not to think
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: that this isn't affecting people, you know, I think, yeah,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: that we're human beings. We absorb what's going on. And
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: we watch the actors that are out there in the
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: world and it affects us.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: It affects children.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: What are kids doing or seeing those things on TikTok?
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: What happens to their brains and stuff? But no, I'm
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: grateful to be able to be in a place today
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: and in a country where we can still say something.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: And it's not mandated by some other power, and who
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: knows if that's coming soon or what's happening.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: Do you have some inside information? I have nothing.
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: I thought you were looking at me like you knew
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: some shit.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: No. Okay. Well, that's good. Is there a....
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: You know, I was thinking the other day, I missed
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Philip Seymour Hoffman.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: I miss him. I miss his acting. Is there somebody
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: that you miss? Like their acting? Or like a Philip
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: Seymour Hoffman, I'm trying to think. Michael Landon, I miss.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Who's Michael Landon? He did Little House on the Prairie. Yeah,
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: of course, of course. And then, what was the heaven?
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Highway to Heaven. It was Highway to Heaven. With Victor French. God. Because.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: I think that was one that I tried out for
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: several times.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: You're lying. No, I'm sure. I'm sure. God.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely in my memory, but that was one
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: of the shows when I was a kid that was popular.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: Yeah, dude. Wow. Yeah. He was something special. He was
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: a really special. Wow, so he was this. What's happening? Oh.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: What's this thing here that says 1984 and then R.I.P.?
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: What is it? Well, apparently he took the highway to heaven.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: He was in the HOV lane in that picture. You know,
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: that's all we can do. Oh, shit. Anyway. Hey, listen.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: You're going back out on the road, right? Yeah. Is
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: it fun or is it grueling? It was fun.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: I think I'm ready to stop doing this hour material.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: It's changed a lot. It's probably 60% different than when
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: I started. So it's evolved a lot and adjusted, but
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: I'll be happy to get it done when I feel
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: like we've gone to all the places that we can.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: You want everybody to have a chance to see it
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: if they want, but I'll be happy to have a
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: chance for my brain to settle down and not always
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: have to feel like I have to go do this
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: thing every other week or every couple of weeks, which
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: is a blessing, but still it's like just this thing
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: on the calendar. It's almost like you're always having to
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: take a vacation. And so I'll be happy when that's
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: done so I can see what else do I want
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: to think about and do. I work with this group
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: called Valor that does sex and love addiction, intimacy disorder,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: stuff like that. So I want to just have a
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: little bit more time to do stuff that's not just
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: focused on myself maybe, I guess.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: I don't know. It sounds– I imagine it would be nerve-wracking.
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: I can't imagine having to do that.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: Really? Yeah.
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: Yeah, like getting up, like getting up. Yeah, like standing.
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: It's like just standing. That makes me fucking nervous. But
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: then you walk around, you have a microphone, and you
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: say shit, and it's crazy.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: You can do it, man.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Dude, I'll tell you, I think this is the only
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: way to end this is just these These boots are
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: made for Joaquin.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: Okay. So I think we have to. Perfect. Dude, thank
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: you so much. Thank you.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Thank you for spending time with me today. Thank you
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: for thinking with me today. And I just appreciate it.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: It was nice of you. And yeah, you just do
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: a great job of being able to create things that
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: the rest of us can't to make us feel. And
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: so that's a gift that you have. And I feel
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: lucky that you have it. And so thank you for
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: just bearing that gift.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Oh, man, thank you. That's, well, thank you. Thank you.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: It's just too, I know, I just get embarrassed. I
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: just want to go, I want to dissect everything you're
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: saying that's nice about me.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Tell you why you're wrong. Yeah. But I won't do that.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: And look, let's just thank Motel Chelsea here for this
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: fucking epic suite here.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: And cheers to our dads, man. They're out there. Cheers
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: to those guys, dude.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: My dad, we don't know where he is still. So that's...
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: We're not sure. Okay. He's somewhere. TBD, guys.
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: You know, good luck. I hope you find your way.
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: Now I'm just floating on the breeze and I feel
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: I'm falling like these leaves. I must be cornerstone. Oh,
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: but when I reach that ground, I'll share this. peace
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: of mind I found. I can feel it in my bones.
