- 0:48Speaker 2: Counseling with also Pastor Cody Quevedo. He's a humble guy.
- 0:55Speaker 2: He doesn't put his pastor in front of his title
- 0:56Speaker 2: there on his name, but he's a shepherd, say the least.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Good to see you, brother.
- 1:01Speaker 3: You too. I'm glad to be here.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Rick has another appointment starting in about 10 minutes, so
- 1:09Speaker 2: he trusted us to do this episode ourselves. I'm going
- 1:14Speaker 2: to update this title here that's scrolling along the bottom.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We're going to talk about as a dog returns to
- 1:22Speaker 2: its vomit, so Um, what's your thoughts? I'll bring up
- 1:26Speaker 2: that verse here in a minute. Um, but yeah, you
- 1:30Speaker 2: want to share on that?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:33Speaker 5: And, you know, as I'm thinking about this, you know,
- 1:38Speaker 5: I want to obviously speak to the audience that there
- 1:41Speaker 5: is a, I believe that there's a big difference between
- 1:46Speaker 5: struggling with your sin and snuggling with your sin.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Um, Right.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Because there's certain things that we all struggle with, whether
- 1:55Speaker 6: that's pride, whether that's lust, whether that's, you know, depression, anxiety,
- 2:00Speaker 6: there's certain things that, that we struggle with that we're
- 2:04Speaker 6: seeking help for.
- 2:05Speaker 3: We're taking it to.
- 2:06Speaker 6: The Lord, you know, we're in prayer about constantly, but
- 2:09Speaker 6: there's still be, there's still maybe those, those, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 6: kind of like CR talks about those hurts, habits and
- 2:13Speaker 6: hangups that kind of follow us.
- 2:17Speaker 3: But I think, you know, when.
- 2:19Speaker 6: I look at like Proverbs 26, 11, Like a dog
- 2:23Speaker 6: returns to his mom, a foal repeats his folly.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:27Speaker 6: And I think sometimes that can also translate to like
- 2:29Speaker 6: the snuggling with sin.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Like it's things we know we shouldn't do and we
- 2:34Speaker 3: choose to.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Do it anyways.
- 2:36Speaker 6: There's not really that battle there. It's a conscious choice
- 2:39Speaker 6: that I'm going to do this.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. And then there's presumptuous sins.
- 2:46Speaker 2: There's sins without knowledge. There's that, you know, even priests
- 2:50Speaker 2: in the Old Testament were making atonement for. but then
- 2:53Speaker 2: there's sin with knowledge. It reminds me when I was
- 2:58Speaker 2: back in my late twenties, when I was running with
- 3:01Speaker 2: the devil and smoking crack, driving around, I was, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: my license was suspended and I knew it because I
- 3:08Speaker 2: missed the court date and I was too busy doing
- 3:10Speaker 2: everything else. And I did get pulled over and with
- 3:13Speaker 2: a suspended license. And in the conversation, I alluded to that.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I knew it was, I just hadn't got a chance to.
- 3:21Speaker 2: So they're like, well, since you're driving, with a suspended
- 3:24Speaker 2: license with knowledge, I have to arrest you or going
- 3:28Speaker 2: to jail. And if I like, wow, I had no
- 3:32Speaker 2: idea I paid that ticket. It was a clerical error.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I can probably prove it. Well, here's a ticket, go
- 3:38Speaker 2: to court, figure it out, you know, but since I
- 3:41Speaker 2: knew I was driving around with a suspended license that
- 3:43Speaker 2: changed the whole offense. Cause then, and they, they took
- 3:47Speaker 2: me to jail, you know, which made me see the
- 3:50Speaker 2: judge the next day and deal with whatever, I needed
- 3:53Speaker 2: to deal with to get back on track and, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: get my license unsuspended, all that. So anyway, I kind
- 4:00Speaker 2: of think of the same thing here, especially being in ministry.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You and I, again, read the Bible front to cover,
- 4:06Speaker 2: work with the Bible, minister, counsel from the Bible. We
- 4:10Speaker 2: know better. We're giving counsel. And so, yeah, it's a.
- 4:19Speaker 2: My pastors say grace is for slipping, not for jumping.
- 4:23Speaker 2: yeah so that's the kind of the same thought there.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah yeah absolutely um.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And you know what was it proverbs 26 what was it.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Uh proverbs 26 11 26.
- 4:39Speaker 2: 11 yeah so i'll bring that up while we're talking now.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And really i think too that.
- 4:47Speaker 6: I think verses 11 and 12 are kind of powerful
- 4:52Speaker 6: when you look at them together.
- 4:53Speaker 3: You know, because verse 12 goes on to say, like,
- 4:59Speaker 3: you know, do you see a man.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Who is wise in his own eyes? There's more hope
- 5:02Speaker 6: for a fool than him, right? And I think sometimes
- 5:05Speaker 6: when we think about that a dog returning to its
- 5:08Speaker 6: own vomit as a fool repeats his folly, I also
- 5:12Speaker 6: think that that goes hand in hand with, oh, I
- 5:15Speaker 6: got this. I can, you know, I can handle this
- 5:17Speaker 6: on my own, or I have my own way of
- 5:19Speaker 6: doing things.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Like, you hear people say, well, this is just who
- 5:23Speaker 3: I am. I'm, I'm just me.
- 5:26Speaker 6: And I think that can be very concerning because when
- 5:31Speaker 6: we feel like we are able to, um, overcome certain things,
- 5:38Speaker 6: the reality is, is oftentimes we're not like, I remember
- 5:41Speaker 6: for me when I relapsed, I was, I was thinking
- 5:44Speaker 6: to myself, like, you know, I can handle a glass
- 5:46Speaker 6: of wine.
- 5:46Speaker 2: No big deal.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Right.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I got this.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I'm strong enough on this. And next thing, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 3: I'm not even.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Two weeks later, I'm almost drinking a whole bottle of
- 5:56Speaker 6: Tito's in one night. So it went from me thinking
- 6:00Speaker 6: that I was, you know, wiser than I am in
- 6:04Speaker 6: order for me to see how far I really, I've really, um, or.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Not how far I've fallen, but how weak I can
- 6:13Speaker 3: be in those matters, you know?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 2: For sure. A little leaven leavens the whole lump is
- 6:20Speaker 2: another just a little bit starts working its way through
- 6:23Speaker 2: the dough. And, you know, we use words like compromise, backslidden.
- 6:30Speaker 2: There's some terms for it. God will heal the backslider. But,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, so, yeah, that's a that's an amazing.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Verse.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And, you know, there's 31 chapters of Proverbs I might
- 6:42Speaker 2: want to just add. That's one for every calendar day
- 6:45Speaker 2: of the month. Especially in the 30th, read both 30th
- 6:49Speaker 2: and chapter 31. And there's some people that will do
- 6:52Speaker 2: it every day, whatever the calendar day is. Like, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: today's the 29th. We'll read the chapter 29. And it's
- 7:00Speaker 2: just full of wisdom. And this whole, you know, returning
- 7:08Speaker 2: to his vomit, we talk about it a lot in
- 7:11Speaker 2: Celebrate Recovery. It's a key verse because of the word relapse.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And again, once you relapse, sometimes people just keep going
- 7:18Speaker 2: with it until it's, you know, something bad really happens.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It says, he who covers his sins will not prosper,
- 7:28Speaker 2: but he whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
- 7:34Speaker 2: So it's really easy. And we have a little comment
- 7:39Speaker 2: from our friend, Natasha. What's up, girl? Eres, Natasha, eres.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Que pasa? Que pasa? Anyway, and then she says, I
- 7:49Speaker 2: have my days of it as well. So, again, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 2: confessing it, talking about it, doing things in secret, and
- 7:57Speaker 2: especially for, like, guys, it's always the porn thing, right? Lusting,
- 8:02Speaker 2: appetite out of control, looking at a woman and lusting
- 8:05Speaker 2: for her. Jesus said, you've committed adultery with her.
- 8:08Speaker 7: In your heart.
- 8:09Speaker 2: So that's where God's, that's why we talk about mental
- 8:12Speaker 2: health matters.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 2: And here she's confessing to the smoking. She's a smoker.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So yeah, we know it's hard to, that's probably one
- 8:19Speaker 2: of the hardest things to quit nicotine, you know, and
- 8:22Speaker 2: there's all kinds of things. So, you know, and then
- 8:26Speaker 2: she's like, Hey y'all laugh out loud. I love when
- 8:28Speaker 2: we get some interaction from the, from our crowd as
- 8:31Speaker 2: we record our shows. But, um, uh, I'll throw it
- 8:36Speaker 2: back to you after this. First John one nine says,
- 8:38Speaker 2: if we confess our sins to God, he is faithful
- 8:42Speaker 2: and just. to forgive us our sins and wash us
- 8:45Speaker 2: clean of all unrighteousness. And I think we play that
- 8:48Speaker 2: grace card too often. I did it again. I did
- 8:50Speaker 2: it again. I did it again. I did it again.
- 8:51Speaker 2: James 5, 16 says, confess your trespasses one to another
- 8:56Speaker 2: and pray for one another that you may be healed.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And that's where the victory comes from these secret sins
- 9:03Speaker 2: that we keep doing like a dog returning to his vomit.
- 9:07Speaker 2: That's why I think the victory comes because if you
- 9:10Speaker 2: talk to a real person like me and you in incompetence, saying, hey,
- 9:13Speaker 2: I did this, and it's like, oh, I'm praying for you, bro.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Next time I feel like doing it, I may not
- 9:18Speaker 2: do it just because I don't want to tell you
- 9:19Speaker 2: I did it again. That might be the one little
- 9:22Speaker 2: thing that's going to help me get over the top
- 9:23Speaker 2: and stop and quit because I know you're going to
- 9:26Speaker 2: ask me about it the next time I see you.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Your turn.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Bringing in the mental health matters side of this, something
- 9:36Speaker 6: I say all the time is whatever you lend your
- 9:40Speaker 6: mind to, you'll eventually give your time to.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Those there's those things that we persistently think about it like, oh,
- 9:47Speaker 6: you know, we rationalize it, like even with relapse, with.
- 9:51Speaker 3: You know, watching pornography, with whatever it may be.
- 9:55Speaker 6: Oftentimes before we do it, we've already had the conversation
- 9:59Speaker 6: with ourselves.
- 10:00Speaker 3: At least. Like, oh no, I'll be okay, I got this, right?
- 10:03Speaker 6: But the idea of constantly thinking about it drives you
- 10:07Speaker 6: to action.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And that's just the reality of life.
- 10:10Speaker 6: And that's why the Bible tells us to be transformed
- 10:13Speaker 6: by the renewing of your mind. When you have those thoughts,
- 10:15Speaker 6: take them captive and submit them to Christ. Paul says
- 10:19Speaker 6: in Ephesians, do not take part in the unfruitful works
- 10:22Speaker 6: of darkness, but rather expose them. So what I always
- 10:26Speaker 6: preach and teach and tell people and try to live
- 10:29Speaker 6: out myself is before it gets to sin, confess it.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Even if it's a thought that you just can't get
- 10:36Speaker 6: out of your head, confess that to somebody.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Talk through that with somebody else. Get rid of it
- 10:42Speaker 3: before it even becomes a sin.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Let's let's get this taken care of right away. And
- 10:50Speaker 6: it's funny you're going here because this is exactly what
- 10:51Speaker 6: I was thinking, too.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 6: Right. James talks about how we're tempted by by ourselves,
- 10:58Speaker 6: like it's we're tempted by our flesh.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, let me read it for James one, starting in 12.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Blessed is the man who endures temptation when he has
- 11:10Speaker 2: been approved. He'll received the crown of life. You can
- 11:13Speaker 2: do a whole study on all the crowns, which is
- 11:15Speaker 2: quite fascinating. The crown of life, which the Lord has
- 11:18Speaker 2: promised to those who love him. So the greatest commandment
- 11:21Speaker 2: is to love God with all your heart, mind, and soul.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Not be religious. It's not about religion. It's about relationship.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And you love people you're in a relationship. At least
- 11:29Speaker 2: you will until they drive you crazy and you want
- 11:31Speaker 2: to choke them. But anyway, God's perfect. Those who love him, right? 13,
- 11:35Speaker 2: let no one say when he's tempted, I'm tempted by God.
- 11:39Speaker 2: For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he
- 11:41Speaker 2: himself tempt anyone. That's the tempter's job. That would be Satan.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Verse 14. But each one is tempted when he's drawn
- 11:48Speaker 2: away by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire
- 11:54Speaker 2: has conceived, that's when you're thinking about it, it gives
- 11:57Speaker 2: birth to sin. That's missing the mark. And sin, when
- 12:00Speaker 2: it's full grown, brings forth death. That's the problem. Yeah,
- 12:05Speaker 2: that's all that.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Yeah. And I think that beautifully illustrates that idea of
- 12:11Speaker 6: what you lend your mind to, you'll eventually give your
- 12:13Speaker 6: time to. So for those struggling with certain things, you know,
- 12:16Speaker 6: my encouragement would be talk about it before it comes
- 12:19Speaker 6: to sin, talk about it when it's in the mind,
- 12:22Speaker 6: before it becomes action, you know, confess that stuff to
- 12:25Speaker 6: somebody else, have those conversations, pray for each other and
- 12:28Speaker 6: build each other up before you feel like you backslidden
- 12:31Speaker 6: before you feel like you've.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Already missed the mark.
- 12:35Speaker 6: And now there's no redemption because that's the other thing
- 12:37Speaker 6: that the enemy will do is is he'll tempt you,
- 12:40Speaker 6: and then when you slip up, he'll then tell.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You you're not good enough, right?
- 12:45Speaker 3: You're just condemned.
- 12:46Speaker 6: But Romans 8 says that there is therefore now no
- 12:49Speaker 6: condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. So that's
- 12:53Speaker 6: my encouragement to everybody is before it even becomes an action.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm glad you brought that verse up because, again,
- 13:01Speaker 2: within a church, there are people who still habitually sinned,
- 13:05Speaker 2: And then it makes people want to question their salvation.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So Romans 8, we just last month was 9-11. So
- 13:13Speaker 2: I want to unpack Romans 8-1 because for the longest time,
- 13:17Speaker 2: and I would, I was one of those guys who
- 13:19Speaker 2: struggled with porn. And I would feel, I wasn't, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I feel like a doofus, you know, five seconds after,
- 13:25Speaker 2: you know, I was done. Therefore, there is no condemnation
- 13:29Speaker 2: for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not
- 13:32Speaker 2: walk according to the flesh. So you've got to keep reading.
- 13:37Speaker 2: If you just read this one verse and drop the mic,
- 13:39Speaker 2: you'll come up with a conclusion that, okay, so if
- 13:42Speaker 2: I'm fleshing out, I might expect some condemnation because I'm
- 13:45Speaker 2: walking in the flesh. And I have to walk in
- 13:47Speaker 2: the spirit, which sounds like perfect obedience. But he unpacks
- 13:51Speaker 2: it in 9-11. So easy way to remember it. Romans 8, 9-11.
- 13:58Speaker 2: But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit,
- 14:01Speaker 2: if indeed, The Spirit of God dwells in you. You're
- 14:05Speaker 2: going to see this four times. Dwelling in you. And
- 14:08Speaker 2: this is the difference between religion and relationship with God.
- 14:11Speaker 2: He wants to dwell in you. Now, if anyone does
- 14:14Speaker 2: not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.
- 14:18Speaker 2: That's the person who's not saved. Because he hasn't received
- 14:21Speaker 2: Christ inside. It's an inside job. Verse 10. And if
- 14:24Speaker 2: Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin,
- 14:29Speaker 2: but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Verse 11.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Ready?
- 14:33Speaker 2: But if, big if, if the Spirit of Him, that's
- 14:37Speaker 2: Holy Spirit, who raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you,
- 14:42Speaker 2: He who raised Christ from the dead will also give
- 14:45Speaker 2: life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells
- 14:49Speaker 2: in you. That's the game changer. So you still have
- 14:52Speaker 2: the possibility of having the Holy Spirit inside you and
- 14:56Speaker 2: still do secret sins, which you should have a level
- 14:58Speaker 2: of conviction because it's You're dragging the Holy Spirit into
- 15:01Speaker 2: the mud with you. Or is that same proverb as
- 15:04Speaker 2: a dog returns to his vomit or a pig having
- 15:08Speaker 2: been washed returns to the mud or the mire? You know,
- 15:12Speaker 2: you give a pig a bath. Next thing you know,
- 15:14Speaker 2: he's doing backstrokes in the mud again. Like, hello, we
- 15:17Speaker 2: just got cleaned up and now you're back in the mud.
- 15:19Speaker 2: So God looks at our sin a lot like the
- 15:21Speaker 2: same way. Your turn.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 6: And, you know, kind of along the lines of that,
- 15:26Speaker 6: one of the things that I like to say too,
- 15:28Speaker 6: in terms of Romans eight as a whole is that,
- 15:31Speaker 6: you know, when.
- 15:32Speaker 3: We slim, we feel like we've fallen. We feel like
- 15:34Speaker 3: we backslidden.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Condemnation kicks you while you're down and conviction lifts you
- 15:39Speaker 6: up to try again. Right.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So the Holy Spirit.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Condemnation kicks you while you're down. Conviction lifts you up
- 15:46Speaker 2: to try again. That's good. That's really good.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:49Speaker 6: And we even see that, um, In Proverbs as well,
- 15:53Speaker 6: a righteous man may fall seven times, but he gets
- 15:55Speaker 6: back up again. So the idea there is that when
- 15:59Speaker 6: we have this idea of, you know, I've messed up,
- 16:01Speaker 6: I've fallen, I've done something I shouldn't have. Condemnation makes
- 16:05Speaker 6: you feel like you're not good enough. It makes you
- 16:07Speaker 6: feel like you can't up and keep going, that God
- 16:09Speaker 6: has forgotten you. He's forsaken you. He doesn't love you
- 16:11Speaker 6: because you've done all this. Those are the lies from
- 16:14Speaker 6: the pit of hell. The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, says, hey,
- 16:17Speaker 6: you messed up. It's time to get back up and
- 16:19Speaker 6: let's do this again. Let's try this again. It's time
- 16:21Speaker 6: to grow up. It's time to learn from your mistakes.
- 16:23Speaker 6: It's time to mature spiritually and continue to trust me
- 16:28Speaker 6: as you.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Walk through this process of sanctification.
- 16:32Speaker 6: And in 2 Thessalonians, it's either 2 Thessalonians or 1 Thessalonians,
- 16:36Speaker 6: Paul writes to that church and he says that it
- 16:39Speaker 6: is God himself who sanctifies you. So when we mess
- 16:43Speaker 6: up and we have that conviction to grow, it's the
- 16:46Speaker 6: Holy Spirit himself helping us become more mature, helping us
- 16:50Speaker 6: walk in the spirit, um, as we surrender and partner in,
- 16:55Speaker 6: you know, and do the things we're.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Supposed to do. Um, but yeah, that's what I tell
- 17:00Speaker 3: people all the time is that, you know, when.
- 17:01Speaker 6: You make a mistake, cause it's not a matter of, of,
- 17:05Speaker 6: you know, if, when, cause we all do. Condemnation kicks
- 17:08Speaker 6: you while you're down, but conviction lifts you up to
- 17:11Speaker 6: try again.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 2: And again, um, we try to read in, I mean,
- 17:15Speaker 2: Romans eight is the, centerpiece of the book of Romans
- 17:19Speaker 2: the whole book is amazing I just started teaching it
- 17:21Speaker 2: at our church I only did chapter 1 next time
- 17:24Speaker 2: I teach will be chapter 2 try to cover a
- 17:26Speaker 2: whole chapter at a time but there's so many nuggets
- 17:28Speaker 2: in chapter 8 and I wanted to say let's continue
- 17:31Speaker 2: to read because if we keep reading it makes a
- 17:34Speaker 2: point in 12 and 13 which is important therefore brethren
- 17:37Speaker 2: we are debtors not to the flesh to live according
- 17:41Speaker 2: to the flesh for if you live according to the
- 17:44Speaker 2: flesh you'll die but if by the spirit you'll put
- 17:48Speaker 2: to death the deeds of the body you will live.
- 17:53Speaker 2: For as many who are led by the Spirit of God,
- 17:56Speaker 2: these are the sons of God. For you did not
- 17:59Speaker 2: receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you
- 18:02Speaker 2: received the spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father,
- 18:07Speaker 2: which is basically saying, Daddy, Daddy, because it's a relationship.
- 18:10Speaker 2: The Spirit of Him bears witness with our spirit that
- 18:13Speaker 2: we are children of God. And I like to add
- 18:16Speaker 2: in there that we still mess up. We still sometimes
- 18:18Speaker 2: choose to scratch an itch, whatever that itch may be,
- 18:21Speaker 2: fill in the blank, whatever. It's different for everybody. Chocolate,
- 18:25Speaker 2: when they shouldn't be eating chocolate or whatever, caffeine, nicotine, whatever.
- 18:28Speaker 2: There's a lot of ways. And he's saying this, back
- 18:32Speaker 2: to James, sin, full grown, leads to death. Could even
- 18:36Speaker 2: be a spiritual separation where you just give up on
- 18:38Speaker 2: God and you turn into unbelief and he turns you
- 18:41Speaker 2: over to a debased mind. I don't know if you
- 18:42Speaker 2: really receive the Holy Spirit on the inside. I'm convinced
- 18:46Speaker 2: that the Holy Spirit is in you, that he just
- 18:48Speaker 2: said four times, he's not going anywhere. You're his, you're sealed,
- 18:52Speaker 2: you may actually have an early grave. I think there's
- 18:56Speaker 2: a lot of believers that have, according to Ephesians 2.10,
- 19:00Speaker 2: good works that God prepared beforehand that we should walk
- 19:03Speaker 2: in them. I think stupidity, bad decisions like running a
- 19:07Speaker 2: red light when you should have stopped could kill you
- 19:09Speaker 2: in that intersection in a car accident. Premature death, you know.
- 19:14Speaker 2: You hear, oh, his number's up, his number's up.
- 19:16Speaker 4: No.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Proverbs 3 starts off with, if you keep his commandments,
- 19:23Speaker 2: length of days will be added to you with life
- 19:27Speaker 2: and peace. Obedience brings a long life. Disobedience can cut
- 19:31Speaker 2: it short. And I believe the once saved, always saved thing.
- 19:34Speaker 2: If the Holy Spirit is in you, you can confidently say,
- 19:37Speaker 2: my spirit bears witness with his spirit. I'm a child
- 19:40Speaker 2: of God. Nothing changes. But I still believe that there
- 19:43Speaker 2: are believers saved that are having premature death because of
- 19:46Speaker 2: their disobedience. Your thoughts on some of that?
- 19:50Speaker 3: Yeah and.
- 19:52Speaker 6: You know as you were reading i just want to
- 19:54Speaker 6: go back a little bit as you were reading you
- 19:55Speaker 6: know the rest of or the latter half of romans
- 19:59Speaker 6: 8 it reminds me of galatians 5 um you know
- 20:04Speaker 6: 16 to 23 where Paul talks about something very similar
- 20:08Speaker 6: to this, this contention between the spirit and the flesh
- 20:12Speaker 6: and how the flesh.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You know, opposes the spirit. The spirit opposes the flesh
- 20:17Speaker 3: to keep you from doing the things that you want
- 20:19Speaker 3: to do. And he gives us really long list of
- 20:23Speaker 3: acts of the flesh, right? Similar things where when you
- 20:27Speaker 3: walk in the.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Flesh, it's death, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, um, idolatry, sorcery, hatred,
- 20:34Speaker 6: you know, contentions, jealousies, fits of rage, or outbursts of wrath,
- 20:41Speaker 6: selfish ambition, dissensions, heresies, envy.
- 20:43Speaker 3: There's a whole list of different things.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Murders is obvious. Drunkenness, revelries, yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 6: There's a whole list of things of what we should
- 20:53Speaker 6: abstain from and stay away from. Because when we're walking
- 20:55Speaker 6: in the flesh, we're walking in those things. And I
- 20:58Speaker 6: love what happens in verses.
- 21:00Speaker 4: 22 and 23.
- 21:00Speaker 3: But the fruit of the Spirit.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Is love, joy, peace, long suffering, or patience, depending on
- 21:09Speaker 6: the translation, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. And against such things,
- 21:14Speaker 6: there is no law. And those who are in Christ
- 21:17Speaker 6: have crucified their flesh along with its desires. And if
- 21:23Speaker 6: we live in the spirit, let us also walk in
- 21:25Speaker 6: the spirit. Yeah. Right.
- 21:27Speaker 3: So that's the key. I was teaching on this the
- 21:30Speaker 3: other night, too.
- 21:31Speaker 6: That when you really look at the fruit of the flesh,
- 21:35Speaker 6: the acts of the flesh, as compared to the fruit
- 21:37Speaker 6: of the Spirit, the acts of the flesh are often
- 21:40Speaker 6: very selfish in nature.
- 21:44Speaker 3: The fruit of the Holy Spirit are selfless.
- 21:48Speaker 6: And one of the things I like to say is
- 21:49Speaker 6: there's not a single tree on earth that eats of
- 21:52Speaker 6: its own fruit.
- 21:54Speaker 3: There's not a single vine that eats of its own fruit.
- 21:56Speaker 3: The spiritual fruit we grow is not for us.
- 21:58Speaker 2: It's for everybody around us. That's a really good point.
- 22:03Speaker 6: So when we grow in love, that love isn't for us.
- 22:06Speaker 6: It's to show the love of Christ to other people,
- 22:10Speaker 6: to be patient with other people as he is patient
- 22:12Speaker 6: with us, to be good, to be gentle.
- 22:17Speaker 3: All these things that we see, that fruit's not for us.
- 22:19Speaker 3: It's for other people.
- 22:21Speaker 6: But we're not going to get there going back to
- 22:23Speaker 6: our original verse, right? We're not going to get to
- 22:28Speaker 6: that point of being spiritually mature. We're constantly returning to
- 22:32Speaker 6: the things we know we're going to bring this farm spiritually.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Amen. That's good. So let's round the corner. Let's talk
- 22:38Speaker 2: about Desert View. We're partners here locally in Farmington. There's
- 22:45Speaker 2: a phone number scrolling along the bottom, 505-326-7878. For those
- 22:50Speaker 2: listening to the podcast, audio only, later, Rick Quevedo, Cody Quevedo, MyDesertView.org
- 22:58Speaker 2: is their website. MyDesertView.org is their website. But, you know, having,
- 23:06Speaker 2: scheduling an appointment to talk to somebody about the habit,
- 23:10Speaker 2: habitual sin or whatever, there brings accountability to it. And
- 23:13Speaker 2: you'll be strong. You walk out of that room stronger
- 23:16Speaker 2: than when you walked in. So talk about the importance of, one,
- 23:19Speaker 2: supporting ministries like yours that are really toe-to-toe helping people
- 23:22Speaker 2: work through this stuff. Because there's a mental battle going on.
- 23:26Speaker 2: The enemy's wanting to destroy you, saying you're not worthy.
- 23:29Speaker 2: You're never going to quit. That's who you are. And
- 23:33Speaker 2: the Bible says whoever's in Christ is a new creation.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And I always like to say, whenever I say in Christ,
- 23:39Speaker 2: in Christ in you. It's a two-way thing. He's in you.
- 23:41Speaker 2: You're in him.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Right?
- 23:43Speaker 2: So talk about ways people can get involved. support desert
- 23:47Speaker 2: view family services and counseling.
- 23:50Speaker 6: Yeah absolutely and you're absolutely right you know the the
- 23:54Speaker 6: um the forefront of spiritual battlefield always takes place within
- 23:58Speaker 6: the mind which is why i believe in what we
- 24:02Speaker 6: do of you know walking with people through substance abuse
- 24:06Speaker 6: walking with people through anxiety depression these different things that
- 24:09Speaker 6: they have mentally um And that's part of, you know,
- 24:13Speaker 6: we offer substance abuse counseling, we offer mental health counseling,
- 24:16Speaker 6: both individual, family, group.
- 24:19Speaker 3: And the other side of that, too, is one of
- 24:20Speaker 3: the things that.
- 24:21Speaker 6: We do is we also do a lot of field, in-house,
- 24:24Speaker 6: in-school programs because oftentimes when we're faced with devastation or
- 24:30Speaker 6: faced with hardships physically, with tangibly, with, you know, food disparities,
- 24:35Speaker 6: clothing disparities, maybe, you know, we lost our income or
- 24:40Speaker 6: we're having a hard time paying the bills. that also
- 24:42Speaker 6: affects your mental state.
- 24:43Speaker 3: They go hand in hand.
- 24:45Speaker 6: So we also have programs to help people in challenges
- 24:47Speaker 6: like that, that if there's things going on from a physical.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Perspective, you need resources. Maybe there's some things going on
- 24:53Speaker 3: within the schools with your children, whatever it may be.
- 24:55Speaker 6: I'm really trying to take this comprehensive approach to helping
- 25:00Speaker 6: people heal and grow and also understanding that it's a process, right?
- 25:06Speaker 6: We're not going to fix things overnight. That's just the
- 25:08Speaker 6: reality of things. And, some of the ways that people
- 25:11Speaker 6: get involved is you can always donate. We are a
- 25:13Speaker 6: nonprofit 501c3.
- 25:14Speaker 3: So donations always help.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:18Speaker 6: And if you need help, I would just encourage you
- 25:20Speaker 6: to really reflect on Proverbs 26, 26, 12.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Right. I've been there in my.
- 25:29Speaker 6: Life where I've been too proud to ask for help.
- 25:32Speaker 6: And I've noticed that when I did, it was a
- 25:34Speaker 6: game changer, changed everything for me. You know, you never
- 25:39Speaker 6: know what, asking for help can do in terms of
- 25:43Speaker 6: changing your life in ways that you never expected.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Um, so we're absolutely here to help. We're absolutely here
- 25:50Speaker 6: to meet people where they're at. Um, and you know,
- 25:54Speaker 6: hopefully get them back on a path to healing. Yeah.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Amen. And again, there's the website change does begin with you.
- 26:01Speaker 2: You got to want help, uh, seek help, seek first
- 26:04Speaker 2: the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all things
- 26:07Speaker 2: will be added unto you. That's Matthew 6.33. That's a
- 26:11Speaker 2: great verse. So you have to seek it. Seek and
- 26:13Speaker 2: you'll find. Starts with ask and you'll receive. Seek and
- 26:17Speaker 2: you'll find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You can knock on the door by even making the
- 26:22Speaker 2: phone call.
- 26:24Speaker 3: 505.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Here it is coming around.
- 26:26Speaker 7: 505-326-7878.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Or go to My Desert View as well. And we're
- 26:29Speaker 2: here to pray with you. Thanks again, Natasha, for, you know,
- 26:37Speaker 2: chiming in during our show today on social media. You
- 26:40Speaker 2: can share it with a friend too. Mental health matters.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Kind of a spinoff on black lives matter because they do.
- 26:47Speaker 2: And blue lives matter. They do. All lives matter. They do.
- 26:51Speaker 2: And if you're even wrestling with these phrases, your mental
- 26:54Speaker 2: health matters. So you're even already have some stinking thinking
- 26:57Speaker 2: going on because God so loved the whole world. That's everybody,
- 27:02Speaker 2: every skin color, every culture. Every place on the planet.
- 27:06Speaker 2: You got a pulse? God loves you. And I love
- 27:08Speaker 2: my coffee joke. God loves you like coffee. A latte.
- 27:14Speaker 2: And you can say that to everybody because it's true.
- 27:16Speaker 2: He may not like everything you're doing. Just like a
- 27:19Speaker 2: parent doesn't like everything their child is doing. But they'll
- 27:22Speaker 2: talk to him about it and train them and teach
- 27:25Speaker 2: them to be obedient. So God has some disobedient kids
- 27:28Speaker 2: running around. He just does. And, you know, he knows
- 27:31Speaker 2: how to deal with them. But he uses people to
- 27:33Speaker 2: help people. That's what I love about our show. I
- 27:35Speaker 2: love about your ministry. I love about our partnership. It's partnership.
- 27:39Speaker 2: We help each other. Like training wheels on a bike.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And so you can learn how to ride your bike
- 27:42Speaker 2: without training wheels. Sometimes we need some training wheels on
- 27:45Speaker 2: a season, right?
- 27:49Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good. Well, Pastor, you want to lead us
- 27:54Speaker 2: in prayer? I'll close.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 27:57Speaker 6: Heavenly Father, we thank you for today, just the conversations
- 28:00Speaker 6: that we get to have and the opportunities to partner
- 28:02Speaker 6: with Pastor Chuck and Overcomers TV, Lord. I pray that
- 28:06Speaker 6: the words that were spoken today resonate with people. And
- 28:09Speaker 6: those who are in you that are facing condemnation, they
- 28:14Speaker 6: would be reminded that condemnation is not from you. It
- 28:18Speaker 6: is from the enemy, and it is meant to keep
- 28:21Speaker 6: people down, to make people feel as if they're not
- 28:23Speaker 6: good enough, that they've disqualified themselves.
- 28:27Speaker 3: So Lord, I just pray that the conviction of the.
- 28:28Speaker 6: Holy Spirit would overrule their minds, overrule their hearts, and
- 28:32Speaker 6: would cause them to seek the changes that they need,
- 28:36Speaker 6: to seek the help that they need, to ask when
- 28:39Speaker 6: they need to ask.
- 28:40Speaker 3: And Lord, I just also pray for our community as
- 28:45Speaker 3: we have faced so much devastation.
- 28:46Speaker 6: I'm thankful for the hand that I've seen through the
- 28:53Speaker 6: church of just rallying together, the community rallying together. putting
- 28:57Speaker 6: whatever differences we have aside to, to serve those because
- 29:00Speaker 6: your word says that if we do not love those
- 29:02Speaker 6: who we can see, we cannot love you who we
- 29:04Speaker 6: cannot see. So really being out there to, to love
- 29:08Speaker 6: those who we can see and, um, and to bring,
- 29:13Speaker 6: bring your presence, the ministry of presence everywhere we go
- 29:17Speaker 6: and be able.
- 29:17Speaker 3: To speak the truth through your word and of, and
- 29:21Speaker 3: reminding people of your sovereignty, your mercy, your grace. Um, Lord, again,
- 29:27Speaker 3: I just pray for those who are struggling right now.
- 29:30Speaker 6: May their pride be set to the side so that
- 29:35Speaker 6: they can ask for help and receive what they need
- 29:39Speaker 6: and what they're looking for. Amen.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Thank you, Lord, for Cody. Thank you for time together
- 29:45Speaker 2: to talk about this. And Lord, even when we're by
- 29:48Speaker 2: ourselves and we are tempted or have a thought, help
- 29:50Speaker 2: us to take that captive and be obedient in every
- 29:53Speaker 2: area of our lives. All for your glory. And help
- 29:56Speaker 2: us keep clean hands, pure hearts, and a mind fixed
- 29:59Speaker 2: and focused on you who gives us that perfect peace.
- 30:02Speaker 2: In Jesus' name we pray. Amen and amen.
- 30:05Speaker 7: Amen.
- 30:06Speaker 6: Awesome.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Good stuff. Until our next episode of Mental Health Matters,
- 30:09Speaker 2: may you and your families be blessed. Thanks, Cody. Thank you.

- 31:49Speaker 7: praying for us.
