- 0:57of our listeners. Thank you so much for your support. Well, now
- 1:00it's time for today's Adventure of Frank Race. This one is called the Adventure
- 1:06of the Vanishing Favorite, The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Tom Collins.
- 1:23The war changed many things, the base of the Earth and the people on
- 1:26it. Before the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he
- 1:30traded his law books for the Cloak and Dagger of the Oss. And when
- 1:34it was over, his former life was over too. Adventure had become his
- 1:38business. The Adventures of Frank Race. No joined Frank Race or The Adventure
- 2:01of a Vanishing Favorite. Nothing can buy as much excitement. There's a two
- 2:10dollar bill. Anybody addicted. The Sport of Kings continued, then there was
- 2:16a soft bomby afternoon, and I was lined up at the other bomby two
- 2:20dollar better? Is it one of the mutual windows of my favorite race course
- 2:23on Long Island? Dead on wagering? Aducing my forty to one shot selection
- 2:28bet it could beat nine other two year olds to the wire in the opening
- 2:32gallop of five hundred on right. Probably I thought you weren't going to bet
- 2:42on the first mark, and I still ain't. Anybody which would bet on
- 2:45two year olds must be off of his stick. I want down to find
- 2:49you want to with the finish line where I left you? I think I
- 2:51wouldn't come back. Maybe I should have said I was sent down to find.
- 2:54There's a guy in a clubhouse wants to see it. He wants we
- 2:59should sit in his m seats in this crowd. Mark, you're a man
- 3:02of Americas. Who is the benevolent gentleman? His name is? It's right
- 3:07here on the pass? Does he give me for the box? Robert JA
- 3:12Sherwood. He's a racing secretary. I'n I ain't no secretary. He's a
- 3:16big shot. You got to see the ashes flew a platform and speaking of
- 3:20pass, who wants you to beat one to him hunt your thanks for the
- 3:32offer of a seat. Mister Sherwood. We've met before, haven't Yes,
- 3:38race we have some securities are once stolen from me. You recover them for
- 3:43me through my insurance company. That's right at the god. I don't mean
- 3:46this to sound ungracious. When I saw your companion mister Donovan and the crowd,
- 3:51I asked him to bring you up here. My reasons are not in
- 3:53time to SI lose some more cigar. No, but I do have a
- 3:58certain responsibility that might lead to problems this time. I want to take precautions
- 4:02in advance a personal matter. Yes, in a way, it also involved
- 4:06this track. It might involve the future of horse racing in this country.
- 4:11I mean it sounds big, but there's awful sounds rather vague. I'll try
- 4:15to be more specific. Race and do you particularly care about finger second or
- 4:21No? I'm got too much of a loss on lady boy in the first.
- 4:25You come back to the stables with me. I'm sure you have the
- 4:30root of my trouble. We went up to the neat White Stable track.
- 4:36The loot I'm sure what's trouble? As he go turned out to be a
- 4:41jet black colt with a hund doesn't make sense. Even only one look to
- 4:46tell me that this is no ordinary And it did a good seventeen hands high
- 4:51when he shifted his weight, muscles d and you look in these eyes,
- 4:57go this champion oly what is this citation? No, his name is Flame
- 5:02of Anthas, the want of horse in Greece. I tellt he was shipped
- 5:05to Saint Rosina, no race. That story was false was given out to
- 5:10the sports commentators for a reason, the reason being you don't want anybody to
- 5:14know that the horse is here because several attempts have been made to kill him.
- 5:20Somebody pretty low and the run humanity. You're really a piece of horse
- 5:30race. I'm stumps. I don't know who wants to get rid of the
- 5:32animal. It could be too many people with too many motives. What do
- 5:36you want me to do? I want you to be responsible for the safety
- 5:39of the horse. And police flown out the Santa ros Either track next week
- 5:43for the match meeting with Galway King. There's a lot of my LUNs.
- 5:46This looks more like a job for a large babysitting. I don't even find
- 5:50it isn't so simple. If you take the assignment. I need your help,
- 5:55race. I can see that you love a thoroughbred, so do why.
- 5:59I also love the sports, but if it's going to exist, it
- 6:02must be kept clean. What do you figure out between the money up?
- 6:06There's been a lot of betting on the match between playm of Athrooms and Godway
- 6:10King. Originally, Godway King was a heavy favorite because he's beaten almost everything
- 6:15over here. People figure the foreign horse doesn't have a chance against him,
- 6:20but it's Yes, there's a lot of money showed for this horse all over
- 6:25the country. Now he's the heavy favorite, the only one to three odds
- 6:29on. A lot of bookmakers gave the garage from the beginning, though they
- 6:34stand to be wiped out. If you win, then you figure that the
- 6:38bookmakers a hides he is for the sake of the sport. That's what I'd
- 6:42like to figure of the possibility. Yes, it's the owners of the horses.
- 6:47They have a side bet even money arts for heart. How big is
- 6:53the bet? Half a million dollars? Holy god, you mean it really
- 6:59is that much, Cabuty. Both owners are wealthy men. Rollway King is
- 7:02fourth on the list of all time money winners, and Flame of Athens beat
- 7:06everything in Europe before he was shipped over here, both owners and all the
- 7:10bookmaking this country. You were you take the job then race? Yeah,
- 7:18okay, good, and there's a bonus. I'll give you one more suspect,
- 7:24the Johnckey who was slated to ride flame of Athens Georgie Clemens. He's
- 7:30been removed from the mountain. That makes fingle race. The only ones we
- 7:35don't have to watch is each other. That's a horse race. Race.
- 7:55Rice, you're wait, he answers, yes, twisted. I can't sleep
- 8:01on this cat like I'm back in an keep bringing of that sat and always
- 8:05putting me at K three. I'd feel four pounds of potatoes. It's a
- 8:09place. Time I closed my eyes, I can't do any more work on
- 8:15my sleep. I'll be too tired to wake up. Mhm. It's an
- 8:24internal prolis the thing you know, there was number one outside but whatever didn't
- 8:31light there was it's the blood shite. My cup was next to be outside
- 8:37the wall, got my knees under. It's not on the place, mark,
- 8:43Yeah, oh oh, I was right. No wonder one punch is
- 8:50enough? Yeah, no, honey, I hope you haven't put her on
- 8:56a commission for good. It's like this, make the world get some more
- 9:03account Come on up. Uh, it's a funny thing. I get to
- 9:09wake you up, but you get to wake up. Am I always going
- 9:13to be water boy anything? I wasn't talking to your boys. Commind a
- 9:20beautiful thing and wake up? Yeah? What happened to me? I produced
- 9:28myself rather crudely hangover from ancestors who lived in caves. Did you hit me
- 9:35with a clop? I'm sorry. You needn't be. If my father would
- 9:39approve of you, I might even give you a reward. I take a
- 9:45day regrets. I'm not doing the hairbrush when you were younger. But before
- 9:48we get into that, who is dead? You mean? Who? Am
- 9:52I trying to be more subtle? Oh? In a way, my jaw
- 9:54feels it's too late to subtle. Don't tell me you don't recognize in the
- 10:01beginning too magazine covered, magazine covers. Yes, poor little rich girls,
- 10:07him model your leader, go away, aren't you? That's right? And
- 10:13by whom have I had the pleasure of being knocked unconscious? Name? It's
- 10:16like race. Nice name, as you said, is though you don't like
- 10:20it. I was thinking of something you're Richard Golway's dutter your father's Goalwie King's
- 10:28right again. You should go on information please? What were you doing around
- 10:31here? No courses runs in the family. Yes, hony town. But
- 10:35there's only one horse in the stabilium. Yes, I know. I wanted
- 10:41to see him a little of the night the match. Minty came the other
- 10:46and half been another on the side. Wouldn't that make me interested in the
- 10:50hole? No? Yes, definitely all right. See you even went to
- 10:54the trouble of the room bringing in the mapple. It's a good way to
- 10:56make friends with horses or stool taking. I know why he would kicked out
- 11:01of some many contus He looked under nash. Why don't you eat the single
- 11:07hy shouldn't? Oh? I see, mister race you must really detective.
- 11:15Start well, just to show you how wrong you are. The apple nning
- 11:22at me each bride, even in the cold ray of the flash light market
- 11:26placed on the feed. Marx your said special kind of feel the boys the
- 11:31girl, but again to marry the boss's daughter. I always hope the daughter
- 11:35would look like convinced right, And the garden of Eden, wasn't it Adam
- 11:41who waked the apple. Yes, Um also lived to regret. But this
- 11:46one wasn't poison you just thought it was. Maybe I'm not a poisonous as
- 11:52you think. There's some retch some day when I have some spare time.
- 11:58You know you're the first man whoever hit I'm sitting side. I'm not.
- 12:03Women are strange creatures and things. But she can cut your head past fluid.
- 12:11Except that the wonderful smooth, I'll reach four arms. You couldn't say
- 12:20the next ten seconds. I don't like the man going over the fall and
- 12:26it is nice. I may have been the first man who ever hits your
- 12:31but so you haven't been the blooded. I don't make sure you don't need
- 12:35black me from now lands. How about welcome you back in my time?
- 12:41Mark should be back in the second? What the way? What do you
- 12:43mean more? Stop wondering about other people and concentrate on man. I wantome
- 12:52to do it because I stopping ever the western wild and then holes for the
- 12:58stroll on the have line with trees, and I think there looking for it.
- 13:07There's been the way, the responsibility to press in my mind the game.
- 13:11I planned to straight line shortcut through the bush to get back to the
- 13:13stick again. All right, Oh, what are you doing well, inquiring
- 13:22photographer? You just asked the question for the day. Why don't you try
- 13:24answering it first? N't see that? Well, it's not a camera you're
- 13:30holding now, It's a smith and wesson. It goes bang, it makes
- 13:33holes and things, and I'll sit down on that stuff over I keep the
- 13:35company for a while. I'm sorry. I remember I have to refuse the
- 13:39invitation. It's not an invitation, it's an order, and you'll use the
- 13:43gun to enforce it. So I look like the type would make a casual
- 13:46conversation and make it rather silly for me to passing. It wouldn't very silly.
- 13:52It's leaves two other alternatives, sit down and visit, or take that
- 13:56gun. I'm letting you off easy this time. I don't know how long
- 14:05I'm lead there after you hitting it again. But I should have been fired
- 14:09alongside of my face flash and blinded. When I came to, my eyes
- 14:15were still smutting. I seem to be seeing red. Everything was tindered with
- 14:20color, even in the night. Then I smelled smoke and I jumped up.
- 14:26A glow came from the stables. Everyone fire, we'll return to the
- 14:39adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. And now back to the
- 14:52adventures of Frank Race. At the time Arista's tables a place resembled Dan's in
- 15:03front of whoever the named the horse Flame of Athens must have had a permanent
- 15:07of things become nothing in the row of stalls could have been saved. Swipe
- 15:11some grooms. Another track person on the phoned the bucket brigade to keep the
- 15:13fire from spreading to another line of stalls. There's nothing to do but join
- 15:18them. Mark what happened there? I'm a poor animal. I'm bungled this
- 15:28one. Mark a brilliant guy like me helping you on the rolls. You
- 15:33mean the horses. All the ranger becomes red ringers. Get out of here.
- 15:39If you got that horse out, you shouldn't have left him. I
- 15:41left nobody would be looking. He set the stalls with the white corse a
- 15:46nice work mark. That's good cover. And not only that, but I
- 15:48didn't started the place when he wrinch trails. I thought you owed me in.
- 15:52A horse might go for the week. I'm very excellent, suggested,
- 16:06Oh brother, I have all many strange characters around my cab Race for this
- 16:10is a FaceTime I have ever played chauffeur to a horse, A little bit
- 16:14of find some side road, soon get off the higher And it was headline
- 16:18in the paper I picked up at our last coffee stime naturally favorite advantage of
- 16:23favored by hesta police may have been looming. I know the horse didn't perish
- 16:29in the farm. If he did, it's an awful life ghost. Back
- 16:32down at trailer and the pick the sides out of it and they'll send a
- 16:34couple of wires as soon as possible. Oh yeah, let him know the
- 16:38horse is safe. We can take him to some isolated training farm. Then
- 16:44it can come down and get him chip to the match. Oh, here's
- 16:47a side road or Thompson and there's a time up ahead. We'll camp in
- 16:51here. Then you can walking down and get the messages. No, there's
- 16:55a spot and I grove of trees not part from the main road. And
- 16:56it's good. Yeah, hello, a little part. I'm good thinking water
- 17:02f that quint pass so to resembles the old swimming hool. No, let's
- 17:07take a different pressure out. Okay, last one in is a mutton.
- 17:14It seemed like a good idea, but it wasn't When you're a kid with
- 17:18nothing in mind, the old swimming hole gonna be fun. But when you're
- 17:21growing up in the responsibility for a couple of fortunes riding with him, one
- 17:26gets washed out along with everything else. I left Mark still splashing, exuberant,
- 17:30land dressed, went back to the training. I put on the ram
- 17:36board, and then he come up and move around a little. I don't
- 17:38mind after heart schools, but don't you move as a man from the night
- 17:42before. I hadn't seen his face into him. That voice was unmistakable.
- 17:48Another thing was unmistakable with the gunner man you carry? Didn't you go with
- 17:53standard equipment? You'll go, yeah, carre the other fresh down at the
- 17:59pun not to little earl in the day for violence. Isn't also too late
- 18:03to turn philosopher. Don't worry about kill go he's gentle. There's a girl's
- 18:07father might say, what are your intentions? I'm just going to tie you
- 18:11two jokers back to back and relieve you of this horse. I don't think
- 18:15so. Would you like to make a bet with you? Like King's book
- 18:19making him? That's my business companion, Colly Sam. That could mean Big
- 18:25Sam avons that only could have done, and a lot of people have been
- 18:29a lot of money with you that blame of Athens could be going and King
- 18:33he won't. Maybe I'm going to see if he gets a chance to try
- 18:37try this last night, remember, but I forgot, forgot to do this.
- 18:44I slipped out of the pond. Hugo also had a gun and I
- 18:47was trained on markets. He slipped into his clothes, picked up a stone,
- 18:51a heavy piece of dead wood. I tossed the stone into the pond
- 18:53and if you go turned, I let him have the business end of the
- 18:56club right behind the air Nice work. Come on, Mark, let's get
- 19:00out here. There's going to be a match meet at Santa Rosie to Parkeet.
- 19:10Seemed like a good idea to get plane of Vanthons out there. I
- 19:12set my wire to show wouldn't he arrange for a plane to pick us up
- 19:15at the small airport off the deep the track. We loaded flame Evanthons on
- 19:18board and head of the California. The jack mark a plane with another small
- 19:22airport and under a couple of gardeners, so that we're going to do a
- 19:26store and need a change. Thank you're getting them. The shakers man there's
- 19:30one thing with sure lane doesn't colong. That makes sense. It also means
- 19:36we should not be running into old trouble, so we're Maybe I could take
- 19:41a little time on the well. That was a girl who slings hash with
- 19:45a driving across the road of the Santas Either track. Her name is Ramona
- 19:48Ramona gluts O. What I met her out here once before? The name
- 19:55like that, he must be unforgettable. Oh, i'd run along. I'll
- 20:00be going along right, Yeah, I'll try not to find outside of healthy?
- 20:04Whoa again? What do you do? Hot stables from coast to coast
- 20:10for Susan? Something goes down? Thank you? Going to slug me again?
- 20:15Oh? You mean the apple the horse missed out on the treet left
- 20:18time? Because you were so suspicious, I can give him no creat amount
- 20:23hunting, John Race, can you think of any reason why I might want
- 20:27to harm plan of Atham? You sain't you a day a half minute?
- 20:32None? Oh? Well that wouldn't be necessary. Race. You could quickly
- 20:34stave the goal away King is not in condition and cancel the match. Mean
- 20:37there's no forfeits right, no match? No boot them? That a limit
- 20:41to your father's a suspect about What do you mean, big Sam Evans a
- 20:48book? Maga you know what I admitting? Once? It was also a
- 20:52lot of the track, not the stables were That's not true, right,
- 20:56oh yesterday because there was only one car of the Geeks. You're convertible and
- 21:03he was there at the evening. How did you get away? Then?
- 21:07Simple? You grew up the road A bit waited for him because Mark Donovan
- 21:11saw your car outside the fence when he was finding a safe place for him.
- 21:15Oh yeah, for you to think I was in love with Pixting,
- 21:21what change your mind? Immediately? I didn't believe him, but you get
- 21:26about your beliefs and the holy woman like that. She was all the things
- 21:32that had men promise a woman shill be when they really put you. I
- 21:37don't know how long we still man must have been a long time because I
- 21:45couple Hello Lake, Hello Mark, you know miss going. Yeah, but
- 21:52he wasn't introduced the last time because she was at and this lovely creature with
- 21:56you, I think it is then, Yeah, I listened to him.
- 22:00Why don't you ever say things like that? Ramona told me a couple of
- 22:07things that thinking you are to know race about that Georgie Clemens Jocket. He
- 22:11gave the book m the boy who was slated to run the flame. What
- 22:15about him? Oh, it ain't nothing much, but it used to eat
- 22:18at my place a lot, see, and I heard him talking about the
- 22:21match a couple of times. You know that's been a popular subject of a
- 22:23horseman again. Yeah, race, Yeah, but this kid was all set
- 22:26to lors. You mean he was gonna pull a horse or mean nothing else.
- 22:30But well that's why the odds and the horse were so high at first,
- 22:33mister race the book. He's all thought that Galway King was a sure
- 22:37thing. See. So Georgie bet against his own horse. But then when
- 22:41they took him more of the horse, that's when the yards dropped and they
- 22:42made flame of that. It's the favorite you see, right, that puts
- 22:47it right in a lap at the books. Trouble started right after Nord that
- 22:51eliminates the book. Ye have nothing doing Mark. If the race doesn't take
- 22:56place, all bets have to be refunded. So that's what they wanted it.
- 23:02Then they wouldn't have to play off. No, they would have stopped
- 23:03the bets altogether. They're taking the odds, but they're gambling on a match,
- 23:10the gambling to win. They try to do anything for the horse.
- 23:12They they try to just before the match, not to kill him, but
- 23:15let's make a move. That's right, tell me something leading And that was
- 23:21still I was big Sam out of the track. That man he said he
- 23:25wanted to get the horse away where he could watch it. He could say,
- 23:27but you didn't believe in No, you should have been. He's telling
- 23:33the truth. What do you mean a girl like your role was also playing
- 23:37guardian angel for the horse as in as soon as a babe, Mark,
- 23:41I know the answer. Um, we're gonna wind this up tonight. We're
- 23:44multiple helpers. I do anything to help you. And mister right good Mark
- 23:48will take you back to work, but I'm off duty until tomorrow. We'll
- 23:52get back onto it and just drop the word the flame of Athans the stable
- 23:56here, let it circulate it. Not only that, but give out that
- 24:00the horses alone and will be until his trainer gets here tomorrow. No,
- 24:04I'll be my dame. And uh you're expecting hic quiet, barn quiet,
- 24:23come on, come on, all right, I'll over Hey, Hey,
- 24:29does that flash like you're pointing you? It's an exercise, boy, I
- 24:33thought I heard a noise, Georgie Clements. All right, So when Georgie
- 24:37Clements, is that a crime? No? But arson is you wanted for
- 24:40bunning downs some stables back east and for murder? Murder? It was as
- 24:45long a shopper I played. I had to sell him a parcel of fear
- 24:48and hopefully ben There was just no horses in that stable. Race you got
- 24:52flame out, and even if you didn't kill a horse, isn't murder.
- 24:56There was a tramp sleeping in one of those stones, George j He was
- 25:00badly burned. He died this morning. You can't pin that fire on me,
- 25:04yes, I can, jog. I saw him, You saw him.
- 25:08I was the only with this. It's only good if you can testify.
- 25:14But you ain't gonna testify. Race a part of me, man,
- 25:19It runs through me back. It was all muscles and shoulders. I could
- 25:23have handed them, but the horse was practice kicked me as a slip.
- 25:27His kick caught me in the small bag. Now, race, I'm gonna
- 25:33finish you off with this rod, and then I'll take care of the horse.
- 25:36I'm afraid somebody's gonna catch up to you. Georgie, Hey, stay
- 25:38where you are you crying. You stay race easy, that's going, that's
- 25:48going yourself. See in my life his horse is safe now and that you
- 25:56stand to lose a horse or win one race. I like the gamble.
- 26:00Think GOVI King could pick the plan. I don't know race may yes,
- 26:02maybe know. All I know is the King is one of our own horses.
- 26:06He's beating everything but citation. I still think he can knock off a
- 26:10horse and across the seas even flame of happens. You know, Sam,
- 26:15we had a lot of guys like you in the Battle of the Bugs.
- 26:18They weren't favorites either, and I know Race I was one of them.
- 26:22I still like the home team wouldn't lose a draw odds and the odds is
- 26:26one of the contest is on the level. Man taking care of his horse.
- 26:29As far as I could now, I got a piece of business to
- 26:33attend to him. I've said, well, I'm going to take a tip
- 26:37from the nice guy. I'm gonna bet the goal away King beats hes ears
- 26:41off on that track. Saturday, The Adventures of Frank Race starring Tom Collins

- 27:14to be with us again this same time next week for another dramatic chapter in
- 27:17the Adventures of Frank Race Art Gilmore Speaky. This is a Bruce Elves production.
- 27:52Welcome back. I'll wank the ending to this one, particularly with the
- 27:57Frank Lovejoy character. True. You know, we've outside of the one special
- 28:03we played back when we were doing Christopher London and we played a not beat
- 28:10episode that tied into Christopher London. Most of the episodes we've heard where Frank
- 28:17Lovejoy appears, and this goes all the way back to Box thirteen in two
- 28:22thousand and ten. He's played a heavy you know which is which? You
- 28:27know in some ways hearing all the heavies he ended up playing on the radio.
- 28:32His role as Randy Stone almost goes counter to type. This particular episode.
- 28:40I like because at first it looked like he was bad bad guy,
- 28:44but then it changed. By the end of the end of the story and
- 28:51the last part is just a kind of reflective, patriotic moment, the sort
- 28:56of thing that works particularly well with the Frank Race and the Frank Race character.
- 29:02We did once again see that there are some things that will destract Frank
- 29:07Race from his position and from his duties, and that includes a woman who
- 29:14gives him the feeling of going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. I actually
- 29:18like that sort of poetic language. Is the stuff kind of stuff you get
- 29:25in the Golden Age that's so rich and so vibrant as imagery. I enjoyed
- 29:30this one overall, even though Frank Race got a little sidetrack a couple of
- 29:33points. Well, now we get a couple of comments. This one comes
- 29:38from Javier, who runs in I've been listening to Frank Race for a while,
- 29:45and it doesn't seem to agree with me. I thought at first it
- 29:48was the weirdly fake sounding husky voice he uses for his oh look a woman,
- 29:55I better go in the squeezer in my arms moments that seem to be
- 29:59so popular in this show. But I realize it is the character of Mark
- 30:03that I just can't understand. Mark is a taxi driver that follows Race around,
- 30:08but he is not his assistant in a Watson kind of way, as
- 30:11Mark follows Race except when there is anything related to this actual case. If
- 30:17Race talks to a client, Mark is not there. If Race has to
- 30:19do some investigating, Marks somewhere else, Mark is only there the moments when
- 30:25Race isn't doing any investigating, occasionally to call the police. This would be
- 30:27fine if the case was in town or Mark worked as a taxi driver,
- 30:32but I just don't get why Mark goes with Race to Monte Carlo or Paris
- 30:37only to visit a bar or play the casino and not help Race at all
- 30:41or actually get involved with any investigating. I will continue to listen as maybe
- 30:45the series will grow on me, as did the Leonidous wither all One and
- 30:51Jabier's riding in from Madrid, Spain. Well, I think you'll agree that
- 30:56Mark Donovan took a much more active role in today's episode, which I guess
- 31:00is another reason to like it. I've always enjoyed the Mark Donovan character,
- 31:06not so much for his contribution to the action, and I think he has
- 31:11had a few of those, but he's just you know, his perspectives.
- 31:17It provides just kind of a different perspective, and I think Tony Barrett does
- 31:22a good job in the role. Overall. I do hope the writers give
- 31:29him better episodes and more action and involvement in the story like I did today.
- 31:34But thanks so much for listening, and thanks for being a listener over
- 31:41in Spain. It's so good to know we have friends all around the world
- 31:45enjoying the program. All right, well, that will do it for today's
- 31:48episode of the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. Join us tomorrow for the
- 31:53Fat Man, and next Monday, another adventure of Frank Race and the Cab
- 32:00Driver Mark Donovan. If you have a comment, email at Tony Box thirteen
