Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Craig Wave Show with the voice of the
- 0:08Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon edition of the program.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Glad to have you with us up until five o'clock
- 0:29this afternoon, and of course we'll close out the week
- 0:32tomorrow and get you ready for this huge weekend for.
- 0:37Speaker 4: The Texas Georgia game. It's an F one race weekend.
- 0:42High school football is turning toward the real crunch time
- 0:45and district play with District Gift. You've got a pretty
- 0:47big game tomorrow night that you're calling, don't you back.
- 0:50I'll be at the field like you'll be tonight, So
- 0:54maybe leave some leftovers for me. Trouble try to trash
- 0:58out the too much. Since you have Liberty Flugerville tomorrow night.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It'll be fun.
- 1:02Speaker 1: A pair of five and one teams Liberty Hill of course,
- 1:05three straight appearances to at least the state semi finals
- 1:09under coach Kent Walker in a Flugerville team five and
- 1:12one under coach to Darles Taylor, who was building off
- 1:15of last year's playoff birth and this year on an
- 1:18upward trajectory.
- 1:19Speaker 2: So should be a fun game. I know, Liberty Hill
- 1:22is favor.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Their offense has been fantastic this season, but they have
- 1:26given up some points on defense as well. So should
- 1:28be fun race tomorrow. Yeah, it should be, indeed.
- 1:34Speaker 4: And it'll be a lot of fun on Saturday night,
- 1:36Texas and Georgia. This was Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian's
- 1:40final weekly media availability. Of course, last night we recorded
- 1:44Long Worn Weekly with coach sark Ale at Pluckers the
- 1:48West Campus location, and you'll hear that program tonight at
- 1:53seven o'clock. We recorded on Wednesdays and it airs on
- 1:56Thursdays at seven, so you will hear that program tonight
- 2:00at seven o'clock. But in terms of the media availability today,
- 2:04let's hear some of the thoughts from long Orn's head
- 2:07coach Steve Sarkasian.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Starting with sarks opening comments, And you know, exciting week
- 2:13here on the forty Acres.
- 2:15Speaker 5: You think about all that's happening in Austin this weekend
- 2:18with the F one race, with college game Day coming
- 2:21to down coming to town, with Sports Center coming to Austin.
- 2:25You know, shooting from from the forty Acres is also
- 2:28shooting from the races back and then and then ultimately
- 2:32the ballgame Saturday night, which I know that all of
- 2:35Longhorn Nation is excited about.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I know our team is excited about.
- 2:38Speaker 5: But the one thing I learned a lot about our
- 2:41team again this week, has been.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Their appreciation for preparation.
- 2:45Speaker 5: And when I say that, it's it's their belief in
- 2:47the blueprint and the formula for success and coming to
- 2:51work every day with a workman like mentality to to
- 2:55understand the plan to practice away. We expect them to
- 2:59practice to that standard and put themselves in a position
- 3:02to perform. And I feel like that's what we've done
- 3:04this week, and now we got to go find out
- 3:07here Saturday night.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah. He didn't mention, by the way, that was another
- 3:10thing I did not.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Mention that ESPN is bringing Sports Center sports Center Enter,
- 3:14not just college game Day. I think it's Kevin the
- 3:17Gandhi and El Duncan who are anchoring from the UT
- 3:22campus on Friday tomorrow on Sports Center, and then the
- 3:27Cole Risco, you know, certainly one of their motorsports authorities,
- 3:34and I forgot who's with her, but she's out at
- 3:38CODA to do Sports Center as well. So yeah, it's
- 3:42kind of the center of the universe a little bit.
- 3:45Sark was also asked in getting ready for this matchup
- 3:51about the season that Vernon Broughton is having. Remember when
- 3:54we were going into the season and it was coming
- 3:58off a year where To and Andre Sweat and Byron
- 4:03Murphy had really big seasons, and they were talking about
- 4:07continuing that defense, interior, defensive line, high quality play that
- 4:14had been that had been like that, and you know,
- 4:17would it continue like that?
- 4:18Speaker 2: And I said, well, it was said.
- 4:20Speaker 4: It wasn't just me, it was several people had said, well,
- 4:22the two guys would really kind of have to fill
- 4:24in the gap would be Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton.
- 4:27And Vernon Broughton's having a marvelous season. He's forced a
- 4:30couple of fumbles, covered the funnel, and he's just really
- 4:32plugged the gap. So Sark was asked about this season
- 4:34that brought is having.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I'm really proud of Vernon.
- 4:37Speaker 5: You know, the guys come into our program and they develop,
- 4:40you know, over time, and for him to put put
- 4:43in the work, and you think about when care Coburn
- 4:46was here in Moro Ojamo, To and Andre Sweat, Byron
- 4:49Murphy and he continued to stay the course, and I'm
- 4:52just very proud of him that that he's, you know,
- 4:54continue to mature in his time here. He's developed into
- 4:58a really good leader on our team. And then his play,
- 5:01his play is showing and he's become every down player
- 5:05for us. He's not just a specialty pass rusher. He's
- 5:07playing well against the run. He's still very effective against
- 5:10the against the pass, and his effort is at an
- 5:14all time high where you know, you're just seeing the
- 5:16thumble recoveries again and just the way he's playing the game.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So I couldn't be more proud of him.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I guess marriage must be agreeing with him as well,
- 5:23since he's a newlywed that's worked out for Vernon broad
- 5:26Sark has made no bones about the fact that he's
- 5:28a fan of boxing, and as such, he was asked
- 5:35about does he construct his game plan similar to a
- 5:39boxing match up? For that matter, who has been his
- 5:42all time favorite boxer?
- 5:43Speaker 5: Sugar Ray Leonard has always been a favorite boxer of mine.
- 5:47That was one of my first fights I can remember
- 5:49was Sugar Ray versus Roberto Duran, So I remember that fight.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I was a huge.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Fan of that era of boxers with Marvin Hagler and
- 5:59Tom Hearns, and those guys also became a fan of
- 6:03the heavyweights when Mike Tyson was a heavyweight and Evander
- 6:06Holyfield was a heavyweight. But I think I think just
- 6:09like in boxing, in football, like you have to have
- 6:12a game plan and then you try to guys try
- 6:14to go out and execute that game plan, and then
- 6:18you have to be willing to adjust, right. I mean,
- 6:20it's like anything. You go into a boxing match and
- 6:23coming out in the opening round and a guy starts
- 6:26fighting a south paw, you better be ready to adjust.
- 6:28And I think football is very similar to that. We
- 6:30have to have a game plan and then we have
- 6:32to have the willingness to adjust. But we got to
- 6:34make sure that we throw our best punches too, that
- 6:37we can't always just react to the opponent. That we've
- 6:39got to throw our best punch punches as well.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I don't think I've ever told this story on the
- 6:43air before, and I'm going to tell it right now,
- 6:45and then I'll go back to the cuts bit. My
- 6:47own half crossing was Sugar Ray Leonard. Sugar Ray Leonard
- 6:52was like in the case of Sark, he was one
- 6:55of the boxers I really, really liked he won the
- 6:59middle championship. I guess it was on my twenty first birthday.
- 7:04It was the I think that was the It was
- 7:08either the No Mos fight or was the one with Hagler.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I think it was Hagler. I think it was.
- 7:14Speaker 4: With Marvelous Marven Hagler. It might have been, but anyway,
- 7:17he wanted all my twenty first birthday. That very same night,
- 7:21I was playing in the Lubbock City Championship for Putt
- 7:24Putt on the Old Style, but of course, and I
- 7:28finished in second that on that night, So that was
- 7:31all really nice memorable memories and all that. Six years later,
- 7:36I'm doing radio showdown at Reunion Arena in Dallas and
- 7:39it's this big charity auction carnival thing and they had
- 7:42a lot of a lot of celebrities. Mavericks the Stars
- 7:46were not in Dallas at that time, but Mavericks Dallas Cowboys,
- 7:53Texas Rangers had a lot of difference.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And then they had some other big name stars.
- 7:56Speaker 4: One of those with Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray
- 7:58came over and and did an interview with me, and
- 8:01he was really good. But he didn't stop there because
- 8:04after I was done, he was really hitting.
- 8:06Speaker 2: On my wife. Wow.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It was amazing. So my wife at the time, uh,
- 8:13you know, God rest her soul. Laurie was there with
- 8:15me and we'd been married one year and she she
- 8:18was invited to come down to so she was just
- 8:20sitting there and Uh, we get done. I saw him
- 8:24kind of say something to her and chatting with her
- 8:26a little before we got started.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I didn't think anything of it. So we get done.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I'm still on the air. He takes the headset off.
- 8:31I'm looking over there and he's like really engaged at
- 8:34all that that kind of thing. I was like hitting
- 8:37on her. We got the break, commercial break, and then
- 8:40he left and I said, was he hit one? She goes, oh, yeah,
- 8:44like what do you what do you? What are you
- 8:45doing after this event? And she's like, well, I'm going
- 8:47to go home with my husband right there. The guy
- 8:49just interviewed, Oh well, I mean you know, and he's
- 8:52like trying to like yeah, yeah. So that was my
- 8:57brush resher Caray Leonard back then, uh, back in in
- 9:00the eighties, all right, more from Stark the uh and
- 9:06she did not go back, and she didn't go with him,
- 9:09She did not recupercate. She left with me afterwards, and
- 9:11that was a good thing anyway. Sark was asked about
- 9:16how the defense makes the offense better and vice versa,
- 9:20his defense making his offense better, and how his offense
- 9:23makes his defense better, and how does facing the Texas
- 9:27defense going up against the offense in practice help prepare
- 9:31them for Carson Beck and what Georgia is going to
- 9:35do with its passing attack.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Well, I think it's helpful in that we we do
- 9:41a lot of good on good, you know, and our
- 9:42our practices in training camp are very competitive. We do
- 9:46good on good every week to keep ourselves fresh in
- 9:48the speed of the game to where it needs to be.
- 9:51And I do think it's helpful for our guys to
- 9:54have to guard Isaiah Bond and Matt Golden and DeAndre
- 9:57Moore and Jonte and Silas.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And Ryan Wingo and all those guys can run.
- 10:02Speaker 5: All those guys can can stretch the field, and I
- 10:05think it's really good for our dbs to have to
- 10:08go against quarterbacks like Quinn and Arch and guys who
- 10:10can make all those throws.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And because that's what Carson Beck is.
- 10:13Speaker 5: He's got elite weapons on the outside that can run
- 10:16and he can make all of the throws, and so
- 10:18to have to defend all of the field for our
- 10:21secondary and for our linebackers is going to be critical
- 10:24here Saturday night.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Okay, these media availabilities on Thursdays, these zoom media availabilities,
- 10:33by and large, When you look at the grid, because
- 10:36you're on it every weekend, you see, you see the grid,
- 10:38and what would you say would be the ratio or
- 10:44percentage of local and area media as opposed to outside
- 10:50you know, regional and national media.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I mean, the only national guys I'll ever see on
- 10:55those zooms will either be Sam Con from the Athletic
- 10:59and then maybe in ESPN you.
- 11:02Speaker 4: See Heather Dinnich sometimes and you'll see some other But
- 11:06you're right, it's about ninety percent, maybe even more so.
- 11:10The reason why I bring this up is because the
- 11:13local media gets into more esoteric questions sometimes. Sure, they'll
- 11:21ask the nuts and bolts and the injury stuff, and
- 11:24we'll hear that's coming up, but they will also ask Sark, like,
- 11:27for example, the boxing thing and some of the other stuff.
- 11:30And they also asked him kind of a follow up
- 11:34to what Sark was saying about quinn Ewers. A couple
- 11:38of weeks back when he was still banged up, and said,
- 11:41I fully expect Quinn to be fine, to come back
- 11:46and to be in New York for the Heisman, which
- 11:49should have served notice to anybody who was trying to
- 11:52stir the pot in any way, shape or form that
- 11:54there was a quarterback conundrum or question or dare we
- 11:59say it controversy all that other kind of stuff, and
- 12:01Sark was quickly quickly putting all that to bed, saying
- 12:05I fully expect him to be in New York. So
- 12:07the follow up about I guess three weeks later question
- 12:11for Sark is was quhen you were making it to
- 12:16New York for the Heisman ceremony that he referenced three
- 12:19weeks ago.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Is that still a tangible goal? I love it.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I love all of our head coaches. I love all
- 12:24of our teams and sports that we have. I think
- 12:27CDC has done an incredible job of assembling the best
- 12:30coaching coaching staff in the country. And you know, we
- 12:33go on a head coach's retreat once a year into
- 12:36I'm just somewhat in awe of you know this.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Well. I think this.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I think individual accolades, awards, honors are a byproduct a
- 12:46team's success, and so you know, if he's in New
- 12:50York in December, it's probably because we won a lot
- 12:53of games and maybe won every game, and so, you know,
- 12:55I don't think it's on you know, we should feel
- 12:58that it's about what quinda. I think, yes, we need
- 13:02to win, and if we're gonna win, it probably means
- 13:04that he played pretty well in some really big games.
- 13:07And I think at the end that's that's a reality.
- 13:10But there's a lot of work to be done between
- 13:12now and then. But like I said, we have a
- 13:14firm belief around here that you know, team's success is
- 13:17what promotes individual accolades, awards and honors.
- 13:20Speaker 4: And if you ask Quinn yours, you'll pretty much say
- 13:23the same thing about my team winning and all that.
- 13:25But Sartin does make a good point. A plus B
- 13:28will see it would probably follow if they are still unbeaten,
- 13:33if they are playing really, really well, and if Quinn
- 13:36is doing his part, good chance he's going to be
- 13:40mentioned in the conversation of possibly getting that invite to
- 13:44New York.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Coming up next and.
- 13:47Speaker 4: We'll hear more from Sark next hour talking about this
- 13:49matchup with Georgia. Get an injury update from him, and
- 13:52some other things as well, so we'll do all that
- 13:54next hour as well, but up next Inconceivable for a
- 13:57Thursday afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
- 13:59and the iHeart Radio app
