- 0:00Speaker 1: Part one, the eighth stage. They went then till they
- 0:05Speaker 1: came to the delectable mountains, which mountains belonged to the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Lord of that hill of which we have spoken before.
- 0:13Speaker 1: So they went up to the mountains to behold the
- 0:15Speaker 1: gardens and orchards, the vineyards, and fountains of water, where
- 0:19Speaker 1: also they drank and washed themselves, and did freely eat
- 0:23Speaker 1: of the vineyards. Now they were on the tops of
- 0:28Speaker 1: these mountains shepherds feeding their flocks, and they stood by
- 0:32Speaker 1: the highwayside. The pilgrims therefore went to them, and, leaning
- 0:36Speaker 1: upon their staffs, as is common with weary pilgrims when
- 0:40Speaker 1: they stand to talk with any by the way, they asked,
- 0:44Speaker 1: whose delectable mountains are these? And whose be the sheep
- 0:47Speaker 1: that feed upon them? The shepherds. These mountains are Immanuel's land,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and they are within sight of his city. And the
- 0:56Speaker 1: sheep also are his, and he laid down his life
- 0:59Speaker 1: for them John ten eleven and fifteen, Christian, is this
- 1:06Speaker 1: the way to the celestial city? The shepherds, you are
- 1:11Speaker 1: just in your way? Christian? How far is it thither
- 1:18Speaker 1: the shepherds? Too far for any but those who shall
- 1:21Speaker 1: get thither Indeed, Christian is the way safe or dangerous.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The shepherds safe for those for whom it is to
- 1:31Speaker 1: be safe, but transgressors shall fall Therein Joseiah fourteen nine.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Christian is there in this place any relief for pilgrims
- 1:43Speaker 1: that are weary and faint in the way the shepherds.
- 1:48Speaker 1: The lord of these mountains hath given us a charge
- 1:51Speaker 1: not to be forgetful to entertain strangers Hebrews thirteen to two. Therefore,
- 1:57Speaker 1: the good of the place is before you. I saw
- 2:02Speaker 1: also in my dream that when the shepherds perceived that
- 2:05Speaker 1: they were wayfaring men, they also put questions to them,
- 2:09Speaker 1: to which they made answer, as in other places, as
- 2:13Speaker 1: whence came you? And how got you into the way?
- 2:16Speaker 1: And by what means have you so persevered therein? For
- 2:21Speaker 1: but few of them that begin to come hither to
- 2:24Speaker 1: show their face on these mountains. But when the shepherds
- 2:27Speaker 1: heard their answers, being pleased therewith, they looked very lovingly
- 2:31Speaker 1: upon them, and said, welcome to the delectable mountains. The shepherds,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I say, whose names were knowledge, experience, watchful and sincere,
- 2:42Speaker 1: took them by the hand and had them to their
- 2:45Speaker 1: tents and made them partake of that which was ready
- 2:48Speaker 1: at present. They said, moreover, we would that you should
- 2:52Speaker 1: stay here a while to be acquainted with us, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: yet more to solace yourselves with the good of these
- 2:57Speaker 1: delectable mountains. They told them that they were content to stay.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So they went to their rest that night, because it
- 3:05Speaker 1: was very late. Then I saw in my dream that
- 3:09Speaker 1: in the morning the shepherds called up Christian and Hopeful
- 3:12Speaker 1: to walk with them upon the mountains. So they went
- 3:15Speaker 1: forth with them, and walked awhile, having a pleasant prospect
- 3:19Speaker 1: on every side. Then said the shepherds one to another,
- 3:24Speaker 1: shall we show these pilgrims some wonders. So when they
- 3:28Speaker 1: had concluded to do it, they had them first to
- 3:30Speaker 1: the top of a hill called er, which was very
- 3:33Speaker 1: steep on the farther side, and bid them look down
- 3:37Speaker 1: to the bottom. So Christian had hopeful, looked down and
- 3:42Speaker 1: saw at the bottom several men dashed all to pieces
- 3:45Speaker 1: by a fall that they had had from the top.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Then said Christian, what meaneth this? The shepherds answered, have
- 3:56Speaker 1: you not heard of them that were made to air?
- 3:59Speaker 1: By hearkening to Hymenius and Philetus as concerning the faith
- 4:03Speaker 1: of the resurrection of the body two Timothy two seventeen
- 4:08Speaker 1: and eighteen. They answered yes, Then said the shepherds. Those
- 4:14Speaker 1: that you see lie dashed in pieces at the bottom
- 4:16Speaker 1: of this mountain are they? And they have continued to
- 4:20Speaker 1: this day unburied, as you see, for an example to
- 4:23Speaker 1: others to take heed how they clamber too high, or
- 4:27Speaker 1: how they come too near the brink of this mountain.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Then I saw that they had them to the top
- 4:33Speaker 1: of another mountain, and the name of that is caution,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and bid them look afar off, which when they did,
- 4:41Speaker 1: they perceived, as they thought, several men walking up and
- 4:45Speaker 1: down among the tombs that were there. And they perceived
- 4:48Speaker 1: that the men were blind, because they stumbled sometimes upon
- 4:52Speaker 1: the tombs, and because they could not get out from
- 4:55Speaker 1: among them. Then said Christian, what means this? The shepherds
- 5:02Speaker 1: then answered, did you not see a little below these
- 5:06Speaker 1: mountains a style that led into a meadow on the
- 5:09Speaker 1: left hand of this way? They answered yes, Then said
- 5:14Speaker 1: the shepherds, from that style there goes a path that
- 5:18Speaker 1: leads directly to doubting Castle, which is kept by giant Despair.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And these men pointed to them among the tombs came
- 5:27Speaker 1: once on pilgrimage, as you do now, even until they
- 5:31Speaker 1: came to that same style, And because the right way
- 5:35Speaker 1: was rough in that place, they chose to go out
- 5:38Speaker 1: of it into the meadow, and there were taken by
- 5:41Speaker 1: giant despair and cast into doubting castle, where after they
- 5:45Speaker 1: had a while been kept in the dungeon, he at
- 5:48Speaker 1: last had put out their eyes and led them among
- 5:51Speaker 1: those tombs, where he had left them to wander till
- 5:54Speaker 1: this very day, that the saying of the wise man
- 5:57Speaker 1: might be fulfilled underreuth. Out of the way of understanding,
- 6:02Speaker 1: shall remain in the congregation of the dead, Proverbs twenty
- 6:06Speaker 1: one sixteen. Then Christian and Hopeful looked upon one another
- 6:12Speaker 1: with tears gushing out, but yet said nothing to the shepherds.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Then I saw in my dream that the shepherds had
- 6:20Speaker 1: them to another place, in a bottom, where was a
- 6:23Speaker 1: door on the side of a hill, and they opened
- 6:26Speaker 1: the door and bid them look in. They looked in therefore,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and saw that within it was very dark and smoky.
- 6:33Speaker 1: They also thought that they heard there a rumbling noise
- 6:36Speaker 1: as of fire, and a cry of some tormented, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: that they smelt the scent of Brimstone then said Christian,
- 6:46Speaker 1: what means this? The shepherds told them this is a
- 6:50Speaker 1: by way to hell, a way that hypocrites go in at, namely,
- 6:55Speaker 1: such as sell their birthright with Esil, such as sell
- 6:58Speaker 1: their master with Judas, such as blasphemed the Gospel with Alexander,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and that lie and dissemble with Anoneus and Sophia his
- 7:06Speaker 1: wife then said, hopeful to the shepherds, I perceived that
- 7:13Speaker 1: these had on them, even every one, a show of pilgrimage,
- 7:17Speaker 1: as we have now, had they not? The shepherds yes,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and held it a long time too hopeful. How far
- 7:28Speaker 1: might they go on in pilgrimage in their day, since they, notwithstanding,
- 7:33Speaker 1: were miserably cast away the shepherds, some father and some
- 7:39Speaker 1: not so far as these mountains. Then said the pilgrims
- 7:44Speaker 1: one to the other. We had need to cry to
- 7:47Speaker 1: the strong for strength. The shepherds aye, and you will
- 7:52Speaker 1: have need to use it when you have it too.
- 7:56Speaker 1: By this time the pilgrims had a desire to go forward,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and the shepherds desire they should. So they walked together
- 8:03Speaker 1: towards the end of the mountains. Then, said the shepherds
- 8:07Speaker 1: one to another, let us here show the pilgrims the
- 8:10Speaker 1: gates of the celestial city, if they have skilled to
- 8:14Speaker 1: look through our prospective glass. The pilgrims lovingly accepted the motion.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So they had them to the top of a high
- 8:21Speaker 1: hill called clear, and gave them the glass to look.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Then they tried to look, but the remembrance of that
- 8:29Speaker 1: last thing that the shepherd had shown them made their
- 8:32Speaker 1: hands shake, by means of which impediment they could not
- 8:35Speaker 1: look steadily through the glass. Yet they thought they saw
- 8:39Speaker 1: something like the gate, and also some of the glory
- 8:42Speaker 1: of the place. Then they went away and sang, thus,
- 8:46Speaker 1: by the shepherd's secrets are revealed, which from all other
- 8:50Speaker 1: men are kept concealed. Come to the shepherds, then if
- 8:54Speaker 1: you would see things deep, things hid, and that mysterious bee.
- 9:00Speaker 1: When they were about to depart, one of the shepherds
- 9:02Speaker 1: gave them a note of the way. Another of them
- 9:05Speaker 1: bid them beware of the flatterer, the third bid them
- 9:08Speaker 1: take heed that they slept not upon enchanted ground, and
- 9:12Speaker 1: the fourth bid them god speed. So I awoke from
- 9:16Speaker 1: my dream end Part one. The eighth stage
