- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 155 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know, we're on a roll. And today we're going to a place I think you'll love. Luna: Ooh, where? Lucas: We're getting chapati. You know, that delicious flatbread they sell at markets and cafés. Luna: Oh, I love chapati. I've had it with beans, with tea... it's so good. Lucas: Agreed. And since you already know how to order things like chai and samaki, chapati is the perfect next step. Luna: Perfect. So what's the first phrase? Lucas: Let's start simple: Nataka chapati. That means 'I want chapati.' Say it with me: Nataka chapati. Luna: Nataka chapati. Lucas: Good. Now, if you want more than one, you say: Nataka chapati mbili. That's 'I want two chapati.' But first, let's practice with one. Repeat: Nataka chapati. Luna: Nataka chapati. Lucas: Exactly. Now, you're at the market and you see a pile of chapati. You might ask the seller: Chapati ngapi? — 'How many chapati?' Luna: Chapati ngapi? Lucas: Right. And the seller might ask you back: Chapati ngapi? So you need to answer. Let's say you want five. You say: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Luna: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Perfect. Tano is five, which you already know from our numbers episodes. Now, you'll also want to ask the price: Bei gani ya chapati? — 'What is the price of chapati?' Luna: Bei gani ya chapati? Lucas: Great. And the seller might say: Chapati ni shilingi mia moja. That means 'Chapati is one hundred shillings.' Luna: Chapati ni shilingi mia moja. Lucas: You've got it. And after you buy, you say: Asante sana — 'Thank you very much.' Luna: Asante sana. That one I know. Lucas: So let's put it all together. Imagine you walk up to a stall. Luna: Okay, I'll be me. Lucas: I'll be the seller. So you say: Nataka chapati. Luna: Nataka chapati. Lucas: Then I ask: Chapati ngapi? Luna: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Then I say: Bei gani? You ask: Bei gani ya chapati? I say: Chapati ni shilingi mia moja. You hand over the money and say: Asante sana. Luna: Asante sana. That felt real. Lucas: Good. And if you want to add 'please' to your order, just say tafadhali at the end. Like: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Luna: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Beautiful. Now, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, consider supporting the show. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps us keep making episodes like this one. Luna: Yeah, every little bit makes a difference. We really appreciate it. Lucas: Now, back to chapati. Another useful phrase is when you want to specify the type. But let's keep it simple today. Let's review: Nataka chapati. Luna: Nataka chapati. Lucas: Chapati ngapi? Luna: Chapati ngapi? Lucas: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Luna: Chapati tano, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani ya chapati? Luna: Bei gani ya chapati? Lucas: Chapati ni shilingi mia moja. Luna: Chapati ni shilingi mia moja. Lucas: And as always, Asante sana. Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: Perfect. Now you're ready to buy chapati in Swahili. Practice these phrases, and next time you're at a market, give them a try. Luna: I definitely will. This episode made me hungry though. Lucas: Same. Maybe I'll go get some chapati after this. Luna: Good idea. Thanks Lucas. Lucas: Thanks Luna. And thanks to you for listening. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Swahili with Fexingo.
