- 0:01After the after the twenty four CrossFit
- 0:04Games,
- 0:05there was a lot of clamoring about the
- 0:08safety and welfare of the athletes.
- 0:10We're about a year after that.
- 0:13And today we have the man with the
- 0:16plan right now.
- 0:17Clydesdale.
- 0:18Let's go.
- 0:30What is going on, everybody?
- 0:31Welcome to Lunch with the Clydesdale Lunch
- 0:33with Friends episode.
- 0:54I have Josh Hicks with me.
- 0:56What's going on, Josh?
- 0:57Hey, man.
- 0:57How's it going?
- 0:58I don't think I've ever called you Josh
- 1:00in our friendship.
- 1:01Yeah, it felt really weird, but it's okay.
- 1:04So I call you Hicks.
- 1:06We'll do that from the rest of the
- 1:08way through.
- 1:09And just for people to understand,
- 1:12I've known you... God,
- 1:14I was thinking back.
- 1:15We're over a decade of friendship.
- 1:17Yep.
- 1:20You and I both started our CrossFit kind
- 1:23of...
- 1:25I don't know, not life,
- 1:26but like this getting involved in events
- 1:29as volunteers,
- 1:32you were on the medical team.
- 1:34I kind of like traipsed around on the
- 1:36event team and different things.
- 1:38And finally found my way to security and
- 1:41judging.
- 1:41And when I hit security,
- 1:43we worked a lot with the medical team
- 1:46and we became better friends.
- 1:48And so I've known you probably ever since
- 1:50like, yeah, I'd say.
- 1:53Yeah.
- 1:56So what made you want to be a
- 1:58volunteer, uh, at CrossFit events?
- 2:02That's a funny story,
- 2:03but I'll give you the cliff notes of
- 2:04it.
- 2:05Um,
- 2:06I had an affiliate at the time I
- 2:08was in the process of opening and one
- 2:10of my friends in the area, um,
- 2:13told me that we were,
- 2:16there's far more to the story,
- 2:17but I'm just giving you the cliff's notes.
- 2:18I was doing a Saturday morning workout,
- 2:20uh,
- 2:20at the gym that I was a member
- 2:22of while I was opening my, my gym,
- 2:25my affiliate.
- 2:26And they said, Hey, this, uh, I was,
- 2:28we had a run that was like eight
- 2:30hundred meters.
- 2:30And to do that,
- 2:31you had to kind of run down the
- 2:32side of the road, the main road.
- 2:34So we went up to the stop sign.
- 2:35I hung a ride.
- 2:36I'm, I'm running and, um,
- 2:39one of my buddies said hey uh rich
- 2:41froning's next door he's he's next door
- 2:43you should swing over and i was like
- 2:45all right cool i'll go over there so
- 2:46this was like twenty fourteen and uh so
- 2:50i just i didn't finish the workout i
- 2:52wasn't into crossfit super competitively
- 2:54at the time so i didn't finish the
- 2:56workout hold that against me now if you
- 2:58want but it worked out
- 2:59It worked out in the long run.
- 3:01Ran across the road.
- 3:02Rich was there.
- 3:03We got to talking.
- 3:04I have a picture from that day.
- 3:06He said, you're a paramedic.
- 3:08You should look into volunteering.
- 3:09I think they've got a med team at
- 3:10the games that would benefit from having
- 3:12more people like you.
- 3:13I was like, that's cool.
- 3:14I'll look into it.
- 3:16thought didn't cross my mind again for a
- 3:18couple of months and then logged onto the
- 3:20website and I saw all these different
- 3:22areas you could volunteer.
- 3:24And there were like, uh,
- 3:25you remember the old website,
- 3:26it's like six different things.
- 3:27You list your first one and then second,
- 3:29second, second.
- 3:30So I put medical as my first one
- 3:32and then I did security and then I
- 3:34did equipment and then I stared at it
- 3:36for a minute and I deleted security and
- 3:39equipment and went medical, medical,
- 3:40medical, medical, medical, medical,
- 3:41all the way down to the bottom.
- 3:43And, um,
- 3:44The gentleman that was in charge of the
- 3:46team reached out to me and said, hey,
- 3:48you don't have anybody else.
- 3:49What if I don't choose you?
- 3:50I said, I guess I'm not going.
- 3:52He said, all right, roger that.
- 3:54Then a couple hours later,
- 3:55I got my acceptance letter and just got
- 3:57into it from there.
- 3:59When I went and volunteered my first year,
- 4:02I instantly hooked.
- 4:04It was just like, man,
- 4:05this is the team I need.
- 4:06This is the team I want to be
- 4:07a part of.
- 4:08I love this sport.
- 4:09I just want to
- 4:10you know do what i can for it
- 4:12and started noticing things that we were
- 4:14doing that were good but could be improved
- 4:17on and that's kind of where everything
- 4:19else started we started there and it's
- 4:21done nothing but expand from there first
- 4:23time i ever worked crossfit games team was
- 4:25in uh carson and uh we had twenty
- 4:29three people on the med team for the
- 4:31whole event so growing to what it is
- 4:34now it's pretty incredible we're gonna
- 4:36talk about that growth but
- 4:38But I want to preface this.
- 4:39I don't want this to be a formal
- 4:41interview.
- 4:41I said this to you before we went
- 4:43live.
- 4:44This is a hangout show.
- 4:45We have people in the chat.
- 4:46We want them to be involved.
- 4:48This is just you and me shooting the
- 4:49shit like we do at every event,
- 4:51sitting on a bench or whatever it is.
- 4:54And that's the cool story that you got
- 4:58in that way.
- 4:58I remember the same thing.
- 5:00A guy talked me into signing up and
- 5:02you had your list of options.
- 5:04You picked your first, your second,
- 5:05your third.
- 5:06I wasn't...
- 5:08as committed as you were to one team.
- 5:10So I did fill out some different ones.
- 5:14But yeah, that's how I got in.
- 5:16Aaron, is this Austin Hatfield's dad?
- 5:22Maybe.
- 5:22Cousin?
- 5:23Close cousin?
- 5:23I don't know.
- 5:24We're from kind of the same area.
- 5:25There's probably a family vine that runs
- 5:28up that way.
- 5:30CrossFit says this guy definitely either
- 5:32has a trail boss or like a lariat.
- 5:35Uh,
- 5:35actually I have a first gen Toyota Sequoia
- 5:39that's lifted, uh,
- 5:40has a winch is getting a winch front
- 5:42bumper and it is the whole back end
- 5:44of it's geared up for deer hunting.
- 5:47There you go.
- 5:49Um, so a year ago,
- 5:56a tragic event happened at the CrossFit
- 5:58games.
- 5:58Lazar Jukic lost his life.
- 6:00You were not a part of the medical
- 6:02team that year.
- 6:02Am I, am I correct?
- 6:04Yes.
- 6:05And you had been a part of the
- 6:06medical team for years before that.
- 6:09Yes.
- 6:11So you did Carson all of the years
- 6:13in Madison.
- 6:15And then that year you were off.
- 6:18Actually,
- 6:19I didn't do the last year in Madison.
- 6:21I was there,
- 6:22but I was at the Mayhem Campground.
- 6:24That's where I was working.
- 6:26I just...
- 6:28A lot of speculation on that.
- 6:29People like to say reasons that I left,
- 6:32and they're never accurate.
- 6:35Personal reasons that I left,
- 6:37deeply personal reasons that I left that
- 6:39have absolutely nothing to do with the
- 6:41sport or the team.
- 6:43But I left in – I did the
- 6:45twenty-twenty-two games, led the med team,
- 6:48and then twenty-twenty-three,
- 6:49I wasn't involved.
- 6:50So twenty-twenty-three,
- 6:51twenty-twenty-four, I wasn't involved.
- 6:52Twenty-twenty-five.
- 6:53All right.
- 6:56so again,
- 6:56this is just you and me talking on
- 6:57a bench.
- 6:59So, so you leave,
- 7:00you do some other things and I know
- 7:02you and I have talked and I know
- 7:03some of the,
- 7:03some of the reasons you left and some
- 7:06opportunities, some more personal stuff,
- 7:07things like that.
- 7:10So the,
- 7:11so Lazar's death happens and then all of
- 7:14a sudden you are kind of thrust into
- 7:16the spotlight all of the sudden and,
- 7:19Now, during that time,
- 7:20you were coming up with a program to
- 7:23teach affiliates how to best respond in a
- 7:27crisis situation.
- 7:29Yeah, that was the MedicRx was my process.
- 7:34It's kind of evolved into more of an
- 7:36event-based thing now at this point,
- 7:38and we don't even use that name anymore.
- 7:39But yeah, that was my goal.
- 7:42Right,
- 7:42but during those two years that you were
- 7:44not at the games,
- 7:45you were deeply involved with that,
- 7:47trying to teach affiliates, like,
- 7:50if this happens in your gym,
- 7:51this is the plan you need to have
- 7:53in place and the skills you need to
- 7:56have there to make sure that people
- 7:58survive.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:04It's near and dear to my heart.
- 8:07Honestly, man, just like you said,
- 8:10just chatting.
- 8:11It's not ever a situation where I need
- 8:15to make a name for myself or I
- 8:17need to be the best.
- 8:18I don't want to do that.
- 8:19But I would like to leave the sport
- 8:21and the community and everything involved
- 8:22with it a little better than I found
- 8:24it.
- 8:24Not that it's bad or that anything's wrong
- 8:26with it,
- 8:27but I think we all just like to
- 8:28leave a little bit of a mark in
- 8:29a positive manner.
- 8:31I want my kids to be involved with
- 8:32it.
- 8:33I want the sport to continue on for
- 8:35that.
- 8:36So that's kind of what I want to
- 8:37do.
- 8:37I've never professed to be the best.
- 8:39I don't want to be the best.
- 8:41would be nice to be undeniable.
- 8:43So working towards that,
- 8:44but the best is not something I'm after.
- 8:48Right.
- 8:48But you put a lot of work into
- 8:50that.
- 8:50It was a lot of documentation,
- 8:52a lot of plans,
- 8:53a lot of things like that.
- 8:54And I think that plays a part into
- 8:55what happens next.
- 8:57Yeah.
- 8:58So I will go ahead.
- 9:01I want to set this up.
- 9:02So in twenty three,
- 9:03you led the medical team.
- 9:07I led the medical team.
- 9:08Wasn't there.
- 9:08Twenty three.
- 9:09Twenty two.
- 9:10You led the medical team.
- 9:11Yes.
- 9:12Then you take those years off to do
- 9:14this, put all that work in.
- 9:16And you and I had talked and and
- 9:20like the documentation part of that was
- 9:22huge.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:23So then this this happens with Lazar at
- 9:25the games.
- 9:27And all of a sudden you are thrust
- 9:30into we need you back.
- 9:32Yeah.
- 9:34Well,
- 9:36I don't know if I was thrust directly
- 9:38into that statement.
- 9:40Not just from CrossFit.
- 9:41Oh, yeah.
- 9:42Okay.
- 9:43Event leaders around the globe said,
- 9:48we need to make sure we have good
- 9:50safety protocols in place.
- 9:52And you had done all this documentation
- 9:54for affiliates.
- 9:55How much of that can translate to safety
- 9:59plans for events?
- 10:01You know,
- 10:02that is a really good question that I
- 10:04asked myself about a year ago.
- 10:07And I just kind of,
- 10:10I was wise enough when I was younger
- 10:12to not throw away all the beginning work,
- 10:15like all the etch work that I did,
- 10:17all the beginning first edition EAPs and
- 10:20stuff,
- 10:20if you want to call them an edition.
- 10:22So I kept all that and I got
- 10:24it on a Google Drive that I had
- 10:25to transfer over to an external hard drive
- 10:28because there's so much information in
- 10:29there.
- 10:30So you can kind of see the evolution
- 10:32of these things as I went across.
- 10:34And the good thing for that is it's
- 10:37really good quality control.
- 10:39You know, sometimes as we go,
- 10:41because this is, you know,
- 10:42now it's closing in on over a decade
- 10:44worth of information.
- 10:45So things that we were doing in twenty,
- 10:49Sixteen twenty seventeen have come full
- 10:51circle and they're coming back around and
- 10:52people are thinking because we got new
- 10:54people in and they're thinking, you know,
- 10:55they're seeing through new eyes and
- 10:57they're thinking, oh,
- 10:58maybe we can maybe we could do this.
- 11:00And I can say, you know,
- 11:01if they ask me about it, well,
- 11:03we tried that once.
- 11:04It doesn't really work.
- 11:06And then, of course, if I tell you,
- 11:08if you come up with an idea and
- 11:09I tell you now it's not going to
- 11:10work,
- 11:10you're going to want to know why I
- 11:12have that opinion and I have the
- 11:14documentation behind it.
- 11:15Well,
- 11:15we tried it and this didn't work and
- 11:17this didn't work and this didn't work and
- 11:18this is why.
- 11:20And then areas of that we can look
- 11:22at and see if we can modify it
- 11:23to make it into a better process.
- 11:25And, you know,
- 11:26that's that's kind of been what I've been
- 11:29doing.
- 11:29So over the past year,
- 11:30I've been compiling this information down
- 11:34into something.
- 11:34I'm trying to get like an e-book together
- 11:36because this year this has been my full
- 11:39time job and it has been.
- 11:43I have become increasingly more aware that
- 11:45there is only one of me.
- 11:47and i've only got a handful of people
- 11:49i'm very big on training my replacement uh
- 11:51you know anything could happen i get hit
- 11:53by a bus tomorrow um a radioactive deer
- 11:58could take me out of the tree stand
- 11:59you know anything could anything could
- 12:01happen so um deer nuts down in tennessee
- 12:04they're crazy so you know anything could
- 12:07happen so um
- 12:09I think I just need to be better
- 12:11equipped.
- 12:12Actually, let me rephrase that.
- 12:13I think I need to equip the community
- 12:15better so that it's not just me,
- 12:19that there are multiple resources because
- 12:23You don't want to create something that
- 12:25you're passionate about and that you love
- 12:27that has a positive benefit to the
- 12:29community as a whole,
- 12:30and then something happened to you and all
- 12:33your work's gone.
- 12:34So I need to have a way to
- 12:35pass that along,
- 12:36which is kind of what I'm in the
- 12:38process of putting together so that I can
- 12:40do that.
- 12:41Corey Leonard says,
- 12:42please don't get hit by a bus while
- 12:43hunting radioactive deer.
- 12:46Well, if it's a bus,
- 12:47I'm probably driving it.
- 12:48So there's that.
- 12:50Hicks sounds like Rich did in the two
- 12:51thousand ten BTS videos.
- 12:54Yeah,
- 12:55you can't shake the redneck out of my
- 12:56voice.
- 12:57You are close to Cookville, too, right?
- 12:58You live in the Tennessee mountains.
- 13:01Yes.
- 13:03What, forty five minutes from Cookville?
- 13:04No, no, no.
- 13:05I'm farther than that.
- 13:05I'm about.
- 13:08About three hours.
- 13:09If I don't catch traffic in Knoxville,
- 13:11about two and two and a quarter.
- 13:13OK.
- 13:15Corey also says safety third is not in
- 13:18Hicks vocabulary.
- 13:20no most definitely not um just joined
- 13:26wasn't watching had to pull a video i
- 13:28thought tyler watkins was talking ah yes
- 13:32tyler's voice uh we do we do share
- 13:34a time we kinship of this redneck sound
- 13:39So you have all this documentation,
- 13:41you're kind of thrust back into the
- 13:43community and the events right after that
- 13:46event.
- 13:46The WFP launches,
- 13:49they hire you to run that like safety
- 13:52thing.
- 13:53And are you still part of the medical
- 13:55team with that?
- 13:56Or is it kind of a separate entity
- 13:59of its own?
- 14:00So essentially the role that I'm filling
- 14:03for WFP or that I was hired for
- 14:05is director of medical and safety.
- 14:06So I do the onsite safety checks,
- 14:10tie in with insurance stuff,
- 14:11all of our documentation I keep and
- 14:13direct.
- 14:14And then I've got...
- 14:16The vetting of the med team.
- 14:18So we do have a medical lead.
- 14:19That's Jeremy Johnson.
- 14:20He's been with me everywhere.
- 14:22If you needed a team lead and I
- 14:23wasn't available,
- 14:24this is the guy that you want.
- 14:25And he is you know,
- 14:26we've got a handful of other people that
- 14:28are capable of doing the same things.
- 14:31And I'm trying to figure out a way
- 14:33to get that out.
- 14:34But for WFP,
- 14:35that is that is essentially what I do.
- 14:37It's a little bit more in depth.
- 14:41at a much higher level than the medical
- 14:43team directly is.
- 14:44But I have been occupying that role for
- 14:47Waterpalooza since twenty nineteen,
- 14:50the director of medical and safety,
- 14:51where I'm tied in a little bit with
- 14:53security liaison with onside EMS,
- 14:57contracting them if we contract them or
- 14:59tying in with the city if we don't,
- 15:01which is what I did for a lot
- 15:02of the
- 15:05in-person qualifiers semifinals this past
- 15:08year and years in the past.
- 15:09Just kind of tied in with all of
- 15:10those, all those resources.
- 15:12And it's, you know,
- 15:13it's just kind of what I do.
- 15:14I'm actually chasing some new
- 15:16certifications right now.
- 15:17Currently.
- 15:18Okay.
- 15:20And then I know I saw you at
- 15:22the age group games.
- 15:22I know you at the CrossFit games.
- 15:26How much were you pulled back into the
- 15:28CrossFit team?
- 15:31I would say that anybody that has been
- 15:34involved with the games team,
- 15:37especially the medical side,
- 15:39understands it's not just a team.
- 15:44So it ends up being an extended family.
- 15:46Some of the best friends I've ever made
- 15:48in my life are within that team.
- 15:50They still are.
- 15:52And it is – you know,
- 15:53it's something that is –
- 15:57it's very near and dear to my heart.
- 15:58And I think once you're,
- 15:59once you're a member,
- 16:01it is easier to see from the inside,
- 16:02um,
- 16:04things that are happening on the outside.
- 16:06So, um,
- 16:07I wouldn't say that I was drawn in
- 16:09on an official level.
- 16:11Um,
- 16:11I've been in some communications with
- 16:12them.
- 16:13You know,
- 16:13I touch base with a lot of people.
- 16:14We share information,
- 16:15we share ideas all the time.
- 16:17Um, you know, drills, operational drills,
- 16:19EAP drills, things that I've done, um,
- 16:22Whether whether anybody wanted to admit it
- 16:24or not, you know,
- 16:25I don't really and I think I've said
- 16:27this about a thousand times now,
- 16:29but I really have a side to anything.
- 16:31I have a job and whether I'm here
- 16:33or not, the job remains.
- 16:35So I'm going to continue doing that job
- 16:36to the best of my ability wherever I'm
- 16:38at.
- 16:39And so sharing ideas is a part of
- 16:42that.
- 16:42And you want to you want to find
- 16:44things that work and find things that
- 16:45don't.
- 16:46And by by sheer volume,
- 16:49I'm able to test more ideas.
- 16:51across a vast platform of events.
- 16:55So, you know,
- 16:55and I've come up with ideas in the
- 16:57past that have been like, oh,
- 16:58this is a great idea.
- 16:59And then we do it.
- 16:59And I'm like,
- 17:00we are never doing that again.
- 17:01That was a terrible idea.
- 17:04Scrap it from the books.
- 17:05And that goes into the that goes into
- 17:07my documentation of, hey, we tried this.
- 17:08It didn't work.
- 17:09So, yes, I've kind of been tied in,
- 17:13but not not in an official capacity,
- 17:15just information sharing and when people
- 17:17reach out.
- 17:20So at the age group games,
- 17:21were you a lead there?
- 17:25Yes.
- 17:27This year has been very hectic for me.
- 17:30As of right now,
- 17:32I have done eighteen events this year,
- 17:34and I've got three more to go.
- 17:37Well, Denise Moore,
- 17:38who won the sixty-five to sixty-nine
- 17:41division female,
- 17:43she knows two ladies at the age groups
- 17:44that got injured.
- 17:45That's just one division.
- 17:47So I bet the medical team was very
- 17:48busy at the age group games.
- 17:50How much complexity does an age group
- 17:53games?
- 17:53One,
- 17:53you're an older population of athlete.
- 17:58Two,
- 17:58they have multiple floors going on at the
- 18:01same time.
- 18:03How much complexity does that add as a
- 18:06lead?
- 18:07So I think that a lot of times
- 18:09when you're referring to the medical
- 18:10divisions, you tend to kind of.
- 18:14corner hole that into a single entity of
- 18:17you're just going to provide medical care
- 18:19but there's so many different facets and
- 18:22if you want to be a good medical
- 18:23team lead i tell people this all the
- 18:25time i'm you know i'm i'm kind of
- 18:27detached from the actual medical care i
- 18:29still do it uh when we get backed
- 18:31up or i have to but for the
- 18:33most part my entire job is around risk
- 18:35mitigation so i want to make sure that
- 18:37every every risk avenue has a plan or
- 18:40is averted at some way
- 18:42So that's kind of my job.
- 18:43And a big part of that as a
- 18:45medical team lead is the logistics of
- 18:47moving your people around.
- 18:49And we have very standard rotations on the
- 18:51field where you'll have a team.
- 18:53Each floor should have idealistically.
- 18:55Sometimes we're shorthanded.
- 18:57We were age groups.
- 18:58So we were we were stretched a little
- 18:59thin,
- 19:00but we made it work and we made
- 19:01it work well.
- 19:02I had a really good team there for
- 19:04the people that I had.
- 19:05So it was you know,
- 19:05it was it worked very well.
- 19:09But what we do is, well, ideally speaking.
- 19:11You'd have a field and there'd be three
- 19:13teams, one field right, one field left,
- 19:17one off the field.
- 19:18And about every forty five minutes to an
- 19:20hour,
- 19:21they'll rotate in a clockwise manner.
- 19:23So the one that's off the field will
- 19:24go right, right will go left,
- 19:26left will go off the field.
- 19:27And that does that serves a ton of
- 19:28purposes, logistically speaking.
- 19:30And this comes from my EMS background for
- 19:32search and rescue.
- 19:34When you are stuck in an area for
- 19:36an extended period of time,
- 19:38it's kind of like driving on the
- 19:39interstate and getting road hypnotized
- 19:41where you drive for forty miles and you
- 19:43don't remember anything.
- 19:44So we move them so it changes their
- 19:46perspective, keeps their eyes fresh.
- 19:47But then it also gives them a rest
- 19:49off the field so they're not having their
- 19:50mind overtaxed.
- 19:52And that's that's the biggest that's the
- 19:54biggest thing with it.
- 19:54And that was that was stretched a little
- 19:57bit age groups just because of that.
- 20:00Lack of volunteers,
- 20:01lack of med team staff.
- 20:02It was just, you know,
- 20:03it's just one of those things.
- 20:04It's an obstacle that you have to recover,
- 20:06recover from.
- 20:07And I've got plans for all that in
- 20:08place.
- 20:08They came out this year.
- 20:10There are things I came up with in
- 20:11twenty seventeen,
- 20:12twenty eighteen and have never had to use
- 20:13until this year.
- 20:14But they work great.
- 20:18Gosh, I got so many questions for you.
- 20:20So let's let's ask the big question here.
- 20:24You that this thing happened in twenty
- 20:27twenty four.
- 20:29What is the major difference you see as
- 20:32a medical lead and safety advisor in the
- 20:37fitness space from that point forward?
- 20:42So let me restate your question,
- 20:44make sure I'm answering exactly what
- 20:45you're asking.
- 20:46Are you asking my lesson learned that I'm
- 20:50taking away to apply to other events or
- 20:52are you asking errors that I may have
- 20:56seen?
- 20:58I like both questions.
- 20:59Let's start with lessons learned.
- 21:01Okay.
- 21:02Positive light.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:03So lessons learned is that accidents are
- 21:09just that.
- 21:10There are ways to eliminate risk,
- 21:14but the nature of sport is that risk
- 21:16is ever present.
- 21:18And there are things to mitigate that
- 21:21drills, testing, you know,
- 21:24making sure that your team knows where
- 21:25they need to be,
- 21:26when they need to be there,
- 21:27making sure they're vetted and they have
- 21:29the skills.
- 21:29All of those were in place.
- 21:32And then sometimes.
- 21:34Sometimes accidents happen.
- 21:36And you can only take away from those
- 21:38only take away from those accidents,
- 21:40the mistakes that are shown through
- 21:42investigative cycles and improve on those
- 21:45later.
- 21:46It doesn't change the fact that something
- 21:48happened,
- 21:49but the movement forward has to change.
- 21:51And that was you know,
- 21:53that's that's all I could I could really
- 21:55take from that.
- 21:55You know, I wasn't there.
- 21:56I don't know.
- 21:58I know a few of the intricate details
- 22:00there.
- 22:02And I just don't have the personal
- 22:05experience level to speak about that or
- 22:08even errors because I don't know what was
- 22:10going on behind the scenes to a deep
- 22:13level.
- 22:14I can tell you beyond a shadow of
- 22:16a doubt that nobody goes into these events
- 22:19with the expectation of hurting an athlete
- 22:21or a staff member or anybody.
- 22:23The expectation is not there to cause an
- 22:26injury to the community or a person or
- 22:28even a loss of life.
- 22:32That doesn't mean that things won't
- 22:34happen.
- 22:35They're inevitable.
- 22:36Our sport, I think a lot of people,
- 22:39it's hard to imagine because of how
- 22:41quickly the CrossFit sport grew.
- 22:43It's hard to imagine that we're still an
- 22:47infant sport.
- 22:48So there are still lessons to be learned.
- 22:52I think a huge lesson to take away
- 22:55is that
- 22:57uh,
- 22:57planning and structure will almost always
- 23:00rule the day and planning and structure
- 23:02can be in place at a high level
- 23:05and a bad thing still happen.
- 23:07And, you know, that's, that's kinda,
- 23:09I don't want to go,
- 23:10I don't want to go too far into
- 23:11the weeds on that cause I know I'm
- 23:12bad at it, but that, um,
- 23:14bad about doing that.
- 23:15So, um, yeah, I mean, that's, that's,
- 23:18that's what I would take away from it.
- 23:19That's what I have taken away from it.
- 23:21There are things that
- 23:23I'm not going to change about the way
- 23:25that I run events because I know that
- 23:28they work.
- 23:29There are things that I am going to
- 23:31change.
- 23:33And that's based off of just learning and
- 23:35knowledge of seeing how the events have
- 23:37played out since then.
- 23:38Not just that one,
- 23:39but the events since then.
- 23:41So let me ask you this.
- 23:43As an outside observer,
- 23:44you saw what happened.
- 23:47I'm sure you've been given information
- 23:49that some of us probably don't have.
- 23:52What are you putting in your current plans
- 23:56to make them a little more solid than
- 23:58they were prior to that day?
- 24:02Oh, that's an ever-encompassing question.
- 24:07I haven't changed a lot,
- 24:08to be perfectly honest and frank.
- 24:12I won't change a lot in terms of
- 24:14water events because the water events that
- 24:17I've ran in the past have been,
- 24:19historically speaking,
- 24:19they've been like Waterpalooza,
- 24:21which is a heavily coastal event.
- 24:24And we have resources there.
- 24:25But I would say one of the things
- 24:29that I have been very active about,
- 24:32and you could see on my social media,
- 24:35is teaching CPR.
- 24:38Because
- 24:39Ever-present,
- 24:40however you want to look at it.
- 24:41I get a question a lot.
- 24:43It's blown up my Instagram quite a bit.
- 24:47It just keeps resurfacing over and over
- 24:50and over again.
- 24:51Is the staffing issue at all of these
- 24:54events,
- 24:55does it have anything to do with the
- 24:57event happening last year?
- 24:58And my answer is no.
- 25:00I just don't see that the negative effects
- 25:03from last year have spanned that far in
- 25:06terms of people not wanting to volunteer.
- 25:08I think what we have is a growth
- 25:11of the system into more events.
- 25:14So it's diluted the pool of volunteers
- 25:18because people don't understand that
- 25:21volunteers are doing this.
- 25:23They're coming to these events and
- 25:24allowing us to watch these top-tier
- 25:26events.
- 25:27based on their own passion for the sport.
- 25:29And it's on their own dime that they
- 25:31come.
- 25:31So if I have to take vacation time,
- 25:35spend my own money,
- 25:37get my own room and board,
- 25:38my own rental cars or drive up or
- 25:40whatever it is I'm doing, food and stuff,
- 25:42I have foods taken care of there,
- 25:43but the outside stuff after the event.
- 25:46If you're any extra spending you're doing,
- 25:47it's all coming out of pocket.
- 25:48And I have an option to fly
- 25:51fifteen hundred or two thousand miles to
- 25:53do an event or I've got one forty
- 25:55miles down the road that has an equally
- 25:58large number of athletes,
- 25:59I'm probably going to do the one where
- 26:01I have closest resources.
- 26:03It saves me time.
- 26:04I'm not burning as much vacation time.
- 26:06And that's a big deal.
- 26:08And so part of the things that I've
- 26:10changed in the way that I do this
- 26:11is I sat down and I looked at
- 26:13resources that we had.
- 26:15And, you know, one of the medical.
- 26:18team's entire purpose is to preserve life
- 26:20on the field.
- 26:22And the worst case scenario is a cardiac
- 26:24arrest or a long bone injury.
- 26:26When I say long bone,
- 26:27I didn't mean to get off in the
- 26:29weeds there,
- 26:29but I mean like a femur or something
- 26:31that's going to really restrict movement
- 26:33and that you need a higher level of
- 26:34care for.
- 26:36Or spinal injury where you've just got to
- 26:37immobilize them in place.
- 26:38Well,
- 26:38that's what we would call an EAP
- 26:40activation, emergency action plan.
- 26:42That's an activation where all gameplay
- 26:44stops.
- 26:45And if I've got
- 26:46At TFX this year, day one,
- 26:49there were only two med team members,
- 26:51and that included me, myself,
- 26:53and the lead.
- 26:54We're the only ones there for a semifinal
- 26:56because we didn't have anybody that could
- 26:58get in there fast enough.
- 27:00They got there the next day,
- 27:01and we had an expanded team the next
- 27:02day, but day one was an issue.
- 27:04So that's when I implemented that first
- 27:05plan, and we refined it there,
- 27:07and it worked well.
- 27:09Great.
- 27:09And we've expanded it since then.
- 27:11So at TFX,
- 27:12you would see I looked at the resources.
- 27:14What's an untapped resource that we have
- 27:16that can be utilized in the event of
- 27:18an emergency?
- 27:18I'm not talking decon or walking around on
- 27:20the field.
- 27:21I'm talking in the event of an actual
- 27:23emergency.
- 27:24And.
- 27:25What we have is judges.
- 27:27Judges are in every lane.
- 27:28They're right next to every athlete.
- 27:30So I started asking the judges at the
- 27:32head staff or at the head judge meetings.
- 27:34I'd say, hey,
- 27:35I need to talk to your teams.
- 27:36Went over the ideas with them.
- 27:37They liked the idea.
- 27:39We have medical professionals that are
- 27:41working in other teams.
- 27:42They have CPR.
- 27:43They have experience with CPR.
- 27:45So they started wearing a red cross on
- 27:47their shoulder.
- 27:48That's our resource.
- 27:49If we call an EAP,
- 27:50those people move to the middle.
- 27:52And I know a lot of people on
- 27:53here have seen where we do,
- 27:54I aptly named it the Jericho drill.
- 27:57It's where we do an EAP activation and
- 27:59the judges form a barrier around who we're
- 28:02treating.
- 28:02They make a ring.
- 28:03Well, that came from Waterpalooza.
- 28:05We tested it in
- 28:07And it went into full effect twenty twenty
- 28:09and it has been across the board.
- 28:11You saw him do it at the French
- 28:12throwdown.
- 28:14I didn't teach anybody there.
- 28:15We had some judges that have become pretty
- 28:17good friends of mine that were at Rogue
- 28:20and they asked me for details on it.
- 28:22I talked to them.
- 28:23I gave them the details and they took
- 28:24it to Europe where it was implemented.
- 28:26I'm actually getting chill bumps when you
- 28:28do something.
- 28:28And as that that large of an impact,
- 28:30it was just it was really good to
- 28:33see that go into action.
- 28:34But I looked at that ring and I
- 28:36said, you know,
- 28:36we have if we have those people in
- 28:38that ring with their back turned to us
- 28:39and their CPR capable,
- 28:41we'll put a red cross on their shoulder,
- 28:42turn them and face us.
- 28:44Then when we need to switch out for
- 28:45chest compressions or whatever else,
- 28:47we can pull that person down.
- 28:48It fills the hole.
- 28:49So that's a resource that goes untapped.
- 28:51You know,
- 28:52even if you have a local competition and
- 28:54you have nobody for medical,
- 28:55but you've got some people that are CPR
- 28:57trained and you've got EMS on standby,
- 28:59you have a resource there to have a
- 29:01medical element, maybe not a medical team,
- 29:04but a medical element there.
- 29:05And those are for emergency use,
- 29:07just like an AED.
- 29:09They're there in case you need them.
- 29:11So I want to bring this up,
- 29:13but Denise says,
- 29:15isn't CPR knowledge something that
- 29:17everybody should have?
- 29:18Do I not remember that you guys trained
- 29:22some judges at Wadapalooza CPR right
- 29:25before the event?
- 29:27So we actually implemented that and all
- 29:29the head staff at WFP in Indianapolis,
- 29:32I taught a CPR class and I got
- 29:34them all certified.
- 29:36So every lead at WFP is CPR certified?
- 29:40Yes, CPR certified.
- 29:41Even some MCs are CPR certified.
- 29:43Wow, that's really cool.
- 29:45Yeah.
- 29:45So and we're implementing that at other
- 29:47events, too.
- 29:49And I've been talking to the AFJ and
- 29:51some of those guys.
- 29:52And when they are teaching their seminars,
- 29:55we're going to start.
- 29:56We're working on the capacity and what
- 29:58that's going to look like.
- 29:59But we want to include a CPR certification
- 30:01in there.
- 30:02And that's where my old course.
- 30:04The MedicRx comes in,
- 30:05we'll pull aspects from that and add it
- 30:08to their course because I can get one
- 30:10of those courses done fairly quick in a
- 30:12day.
- 30:13You know,
- 30:13I might have to if I've got a
- 30:15slew of judges I've got to teach,
- 30:16I'm going to have to have some some
- 30:18help.
- 30:18But I've got resources.
- 30:19Med team members are CPR instructors.
- 30:23They're willing to come out with me and
- 30:24we can teach these classes.
- 30:25The big thing is that, you know,
- 30:28these classes...
- 30:29If you're being taught for an event from
- 30:32somebody like me,
- 30:32I'm going to be able to give you
- 30:33details that aren't just pump and blow.
- 30:36You know, it's going to be, hey,
- 30:38this is something you might experience on
- 30:40the field.
- 30:40This is what we're looking for.
- 30:41This is what we're waiting for.
- 30:43And people that are on the field,
- 30:45especially judges.
- 30:47are very used to the stress of the
- 30:49environment, the high speed,
- 30:51low drag setup of those events.
- 30:53So they're going to already be attuned to
- 30:55it.
- 30:55And that's one of the things that these
- 30:57EAP full dress rehearsals do.
- 30:59You know,
- 31:00it gives everybody an idea of what to
- 31:02do in an emergency,
- 31:03in a traumatic emergency situation like
- 31:06that.
- 31:06The calmest head wins the day.
- 31:08So if people know what to expect,
- 31:11they are way less apt to have an
- 31:14emotional reaction and more of a logical
- 31:16response, which is what we want.
- 31:19Jody Lynn,
- 31:20all I need to know about CPR I
- 31:21learned on The Office, staying alive,
- 31:24staying alive.
- 31:25Yeah,
- 31:25just don't cut somebody's face off and
- 31:27wear it.
- 31:28Yeah, true, true that.
- 31:32So Shanna Bunce, she is a doctor.
- 31:37So she wants to know,
- 31:38do you ever respond if a spectator goes
- 31:40down?
- 31:42That's a unique question.
- 31:43I'm really glad somebody answer or ask it
- 31:45so I can answer it.
- 31:47We treat inside the ropes,
- 31:51inside the ropes are volunteers,
- 31:54staff and athletes or athlete adjacent,
- 31:58like a coach.
- 31:59The primary function of us is not
- 32:01spectators.
- 32:03However, we,
- 32:04If I have given out one Band-Aid to
- 32:06a spectator with a blister,
- 32:08I have given out ten trillion.
- 32:10So that is the number one thing that
- 32:12we do.
- 32:13But we are medical professionals.
- 32:16If somebody goes down and I am within
- 32:19eye shot or ear shot of it,
- 32:21I will be there.
- 32:22We did that at Rogue.
- 32:24We had a spectator have a seizure.
- 32:27I have had spectators have, thankfully,
- 32:30not a...
- 32:31cardiac arrest yet.
- 32:32But one of those things,
- 32:34if we have those resources,
- 32:35we will respond to it.
- 32:37Very few events that I work have a
- 32:41medical director which opens up the
- 32:43treatment that we can place.
- 32:45But it is a very big price tag
- 32:47for that.
- 32:48So we operate on a BLS standard,
- 32:50which means that you may have paramedics,
- 32:52nurses, doctors are a little gray area.
- 32:55If they're local,
- 32:56they can operate off their licensure.
- 32:57But RNs, LPNs, EMTs, firefighters,
- 33:02paramedics,
- 33:03we can operate off of that BLS standard
- 33:06very easily.
- 33:08Very directly.
- 33:10BLS mean?
- 33:10BLS would be basic life support.
- 33:12So that's going to be CPR,
- 33:14basic bandaging.
- 33:15ALS would be like IVs.
- 33:17It would be like a cardiac monitor,
- 33:19medications.
- 33:20If you've ever come to any of our
- 33:22clinics where we don't have a medical
- 33:23director and needed like an ibuprofen,
- 33:26you will note I did not give it
- 33:27to you and neither did any of my
- 33:29staff because that is a medication.
- 33:31I can set it down and what you
- 33:32choose to do with that is up to
- 33:34you.
- 33:34But I can't give it to you directly.
- 33:36I'm not going to start IVs.
- 33:38I'm not going to put you on a
- 33:39cardiac monitor in the back.
- 33:40I'm not going to do that unless I
- 33:41have a doctor there who can direct those
- 33:43actions under their licensure.
- 33:45Does that make sense?
- 33:46Yep.
- 33:48An event would have to hire a medical
- 33:50director to kind of be over that.
- 33:52And they are a doctor.
- 33:54Yes.
- 33:55Okay.
- 33:56Yes.
- 33:56Wow.
- 33:58You think something so simple,
- 34:00yet it's way more complicated than you
- 34:02could ever imagine.
- 34:04Um, uh, back to the volunteer piece.
- 34:08And I know, you know,
- 34:08I was a judge, I was security,
- 34:10all that kind of stuff.
- 34:12One of the biggest things is they have
- 34:14a number that they want signups to cover
- 34:16the event.
- 34:17And inevitably you get no shows right
- 34:21before the event.
- 34:21And I think at the age group games,
- 34:23I talked to one of the head judges
- 34:24and they lost like judges the night before
- 34:27the first event who just never showed up.
- 34:30Yep.
- 34:30So then all the all the plans you
- 34:32have for the personnel that you're given
- 34:35are off kilter because you don't have the
- 34:37numbers you thought you'd have.
- 34:39Is there any like forethought into maybe
- 34:43we need to like overpopulate that
- 34:45volunteer thing?
- 34:46So we because we know we're going to
- 34:48get no shows.
- 34:50So most of the events that I actually,
- 34:52I can pretty much go on record.
- 34:54All the events that I work for shoot
- 34:56for a higher level.
- 34:57They'll ask you how many you need with
- 34:59an expectation of covering that gap.
- 35:02And, you know,
- 35:03I did that for age games, um,
- 35:06The age groups,
- 35:08I gave them a number and we had
- 35:10out of that number,
- 35:10we had thirty four people that replied
- 35:13back that they were going to be there
- 35:15and that they were going to work.
- 35:16I went as far as to vet the
- 35:18licensure of thirty one of them,
- 35:21knowing good and well that three of them
- 35:22were probably not showing up because they
- 35:24didn't reply to any emails past the
- 35:25confirmation.
- 35:27And then the day of,
- 35:30I have like nine people show up.
- 35:33Nobody else can't get a hold of anybody
- 35:35there.
- 35:36Nobody's replying.
- 35:37So in those situations,
- 35:39it's always good to have a backup plan.
- 35:43I'm a career paramedic, just retired.
- 35:46I operate on the worst case scenario every
- 35:49time I clocked in.
- 35:51So the worst case scenario for me is
- 35:53showing up on scene with a bunch of
- 35:56untrained personnel that may or may not be
- 35:58volunteers and
- 36:01me as the only ALS provider with like
- 36:03ten or fifteen patients from a wreck or
- 36:06a house fire or something like that.
- 36:08So I started running these events in that
- 36:09manner, like a worst case scenario.
- 36:11And I do that at my house two
- 36:13to three weeks before that happens.
- 36:14I write out the worst case scenario.
- 36:16I have this many floors.
- 36:17What is the, you know,
- 36:20the absolute DEFCON one?
- 36:22We don't have a med team and I
- 36:24can get down to a very limited number
- 36:27of people.
- 36:27If I have
- 36:29more than two floors and I have less
- 36:32than two people, I can't run the event.
- 36:38And that is if you base your medical
- 36:40care solely off of the people that signed
- 36:43up for medical.
- 36:44But the caveat to that is if you
- 36:47expand into an emergency preparation,
- 36:49you really only need one or two med
- 36:52leads that know what's going on and can
- 36:55direct those people that you read
- 36:56crosstag.
- 36:58then that expands it out.
- 36:59Now, these are all, you know,
- 37:01these are all band-aids, if you will,
- 37:04that kind of fix the problem at hand,
- 37:06but they work and they work well.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:12Yeah, it's a growing problem,
- 37:15but I do like the fact the cross-training,
- 37:17like having judges with the Red Cross,
- 37:19if they have these skills or they work
- 37:22in that profession,
- 37:24it's a way to use people from other
- 37:25teams.
- 37:26But my God,
- 37:27the plan as a lead with a volunteer
- 37:31base and then the stress of we are
- 37:34responsible for these people's safety,
- 37:37and we don't even know the numbers we're
- 37:38getting until the day of the event, truly.
- 37:40Yeah.
- 37:43And it happens.
- 37:44I mean, even since twenty fifteen,
- 37:45twenty fourteen, we've you know,
- 37:47you'll you'll sign up.
- 37:49Forty people and five or six of them
- 37:52won't show up.
- 37:53You know,
- 37:54you're you're just going to you're going
- 37:55to have that.
- 37:55And thankfully,
- 37:58not frequently on the med team,
- 37:59but I have had people show up,
- 38:01get their free gear and never come back.
- 38:04And I would like to say.
- 38:09I have a running list of people that
- 38:11have done that or been absolutely awful to
- 38:15personnel, athletes,
- 38:17or just not done their job.
- 38:19So if you think you're going to come
- 38:21in on my team and work one event
- 38:24and get away with that,
- 38:25I'm probably not the guy to do that
- 38:27to because that list goes vastly farther
- 38:33than just the events that I do.
- 38:34Yeah.
- 38:35When you're a part of that volunteer
- 38:37community and people know you're good at
- 38:39whatever you sign up for,
- 38:42that's why they bring you back over and
- 38:43over again.
- 38:44And it becomes family,
- 38:45just like you talked about off the top.
- 38:49Going to events, even to this day,
- 38:50the people I volunteered with back when I
- 38:52was a volunteer are still some of my
- 38:54best friends when I go to the events.
- 38:57Um,
- 38:58and the connections I have with the
- 38:59judging community,
- 39:01being able to ask standards, uh,
- 39:03from the media pit has been essential to
- 39:06what I do today.
- 39:09So there's a bunch of questions in here.
- 39:11I want to hit a couple of these.
- 39:13Uh, Jeffrey Birchfield asks, uh,
- 39:15is Sean rocket the, um,
- 39:20This is in reference to the medical
- 39:23director.
- 39:24Is Sean Rock at the games?
- 39:26I understand.
- 39:27I read the question.
- 39:29I'm older,
- 39:30but my eyes haven't given out yet,
- 39:31so I can read that tiny print.
- 39:34Rock at works the events.
- 39:36He's not the medical director for the
- 39:38games.
- 39:38He's a very, very,
- 39:39very big component for the games.
- 39:42I don't know.
- 39:44If you've never met the guy,
- 39:45he's just such a good dude.
- 39:47So, I mean,
- 39:48just like on a CrossFit or like personal
- 39:50level,
- 39:51he's just a great guy and a very
- 39:54big asset to have at any event.
- 39:55Yeah.
- 39:56And I think, um,
- 39:57Siobhan's having them on later this week.
- 39:59Awesome.
- 40:00So that's really cool too.
- 40:02Um,
- 40:04do you have people on your team that
- 40:06are not medically trained?
- 40:08That's, you know,
- 40:09that's another good question.
- 40:10I do have a handful of spots.
- 40:11I keep those for students.
- 40:13They're not,
- 40:15I won't say that they're not medically
- 40:16trained,
- 40:16but they may or may not be licensed.
- 40:18A good indication of that is in Miami
- 40:21every year,
- 40:21we work very closely with the Jackson,
- 40:24I think it's Jackson Memorial Hospital,
- 40:26and they send up their residents with
- 40:29their attending and they work with us.
- 40:30So they're not, you know,
- 40:31they do have a license,
- 40:33but it's not qualified.
- 40:33quite they're not through yet so they come
- 40:36in and they provide services but i
- 40:38personally uh emt students nursing
- 40:40students i'll allow them in they're just
- 40:43not allowed to do direct care they're with
- 40:46us and they have to have a chaperone
- 40:47so i have groups of people that kind
- 40:49of teach them the flow and you know
- 40:50that goes about spreading the knowledge of
- 40:52how we do this so it goes to
- 40:53the next generation i have to keep those
- 40:54spots open because there are good people
- 40:56out there that just aren't ready yet
- 41:00Um, this goes with another one clock,
- 41:03a demoralizing thing about learning CPR
- 41:05decades ago was that the protocol seemed
- 41:06to be frequently changing in the eighties
- 41:09and nineties.
- 41:10I have no idea what it is now.
- 41:12And then Mark Phillips follows up.
- 41:14Do you even gives breaths anymore or is
- 41:16it all compressions?
- 41:17If it's just you, it's compressions.
- 41:20That's it.
- 41:21And that's all you really need to know.
- 41:24You know, they've done tons of studies.
- 41:25I'm not going to get deep on this,
- 41:27but just a good little tidbit of advice.
- 41:29They've done studies on bodies where
- 41:32they've filled them with oxygen and then
- 41:35stopped and they start doing chest
- 41:36compressions.
- 41:37And fifteen minutes later,
- 41:39they're still pumping mildly oxygenated
- 41:41blood.
- 41:42You've got to get the blood going.
- 41:44So it's just like a car with oil.
- 41:46If you stop pumping,
- 41:47blood pressure goes to zero.
- 41:49It's not moving any air.
- 41:51And then you start pumping again.
- 41:52First pump, it's moving a little bit.
- 41:54Second, it's moving a little bit.
- 41:55By the fourth or fifth one,
- 41:56now you've got perfusion.
- 41:57And then you stop at a hundred or
- 41:59a hundred and twenty.
- 42:00You stop and then it goes back to
- 42:02zero.
- 42:03So you want to keep it going.
- 42:04And that's really changed with something
- 42:06they call pit crew CPR,
- 42:07where it's just a continuous CPR,
- 42:09like just compressions.
- 42:11When in doubt, pump it out.
- 42:12Just keep pressing that chest and don't
- 42:15stop until you get an AED or something
- 42:17on there.
- 42:17That's the best advice I can give anybody.
- 42:21Mark also asks,
- 42:21what about grads without NCLEX, AANP,
- 42:25et cetera?
- 42:27So that's some of the ones that I
- 42:29would talk about.
- 42:30You do have some grads that are moving
- 42:32through school.
- 42:33They're fine.
- 42:34I can apply them to that kind of
- 42:37student group and will allow them to kind
- 42:39of come in.
- 42:39They ask questions.
- 42:40Another thing people don't realize,
- 42:42and you just spoke about it without
- 42:43actually naming it, networking,
- 42:45working these events.
- 42:46You can network,
- 42:47and it goes way outside of the sport.
- 42:50So having resources in there,
- 42:52like let's say you are a grad,
- 42:53but you don't have the NCLEX or any
- 42:55of the search yet.
- 42:56Cause you kind of don't really know which
- 42:58direction you want to go.
- 42:59Well,
- 42:59you have resources to ask if you do
- 43:00that.
- 43:01So yes, I have those spots.
- 43:02Yes, I do involve them.
- 43:03I don't have many of them.
- 43:04I wouldn't have a team of people like
- 43:06that, but I can add one, two,
- 43:07sometimes three.
- 43:08I think the most I ever had was
- 43:09four, but that's a huge event.
- 43:13So I want to ask you,
- 43:15Going forward in this space,
- 43:16if you had your wish for any one
- 43:20thing to have at your beck and call
- 43:24or the number one thing on your wish
- 43:26list,
- 43:26what would that be to make your job
- 43:29easier and better?
- 43:31At all events?
- 43:33Yeah.
- 43:35One or two more paid medical leads.
- 43:40So it's not all on me because I
- 43:43can't be everywhere at once.
- 43:45And we have that at WFP and we
- 43:48have that at Waterpalooza and it's
- 43:50expanding and that's at the games as well.
- 43:55Having those paid staff puts them on
- 43:57another level.
- 43:58It gets them there.
- 44:00It gives them incentive to be there and
- 44:02they help me to be better.
- 44:05And I've, you know, you cannot,
- 44:08a rising tide raises all ships and anybody
- 44:11that says they're the best at what they
- 44:12do,
- 44:14They're just complacent.
- 44:16So you've got to surround yourself with
- 44:18people that make you better.
- 44:19That's what I've tried to do.
- 44:24this is Jake from the base show in
- 44:26the U S is a requirement to do
- 44:28your CPR for being a trainer.
- 44:30I don't believe there is.
- 44:32I think it depends on,
- 44:33I think it depends on where you get,
- 44:34um, where you get your certification.
- 44:35I know the, um, level one.
- 44:37And if you're going to be an affiliate
- 44:38owner, you have to have it.
- 44:39You have to have your CPR level two.
- 44:41Um, you know,
- 44:43your certified CrossFit coach and
- 44:44certified CrossFit trainer,
- 44:46all of those require CPR.
- 44:48Uh,
- 44:48I don't know about the personal trainer
- 44:50stuff.
- 44:50Um,
- 44:52I don't know.
- 44:52What is that?
- 44:53NSCA?
- 44:54I mean,
- 44:55they'll probably give you a six-pack of
- 44:56Coke and let you come in.
- 44:59When I got my level one,
- 45:00I wasn't required to have CPR.
- 45:02Now,
- 45:02when I coached at the gym I coached
- 45:04at, the box required me to be certified.
- 45:10But there was no requirement by law that
- 45:13I have it back then anyway.
- 45:16I think CPR training goes down to
- 45:18integrity of what you're doing.
- 45:20If you take it professionally,
- 45:21why wouldn't you want to have that?
- 45:23If you're wanting to better people's
- 45:24lives,
- 45:25you're going to get people in that are
- 45:26in a terribly deconditioned state.
- 45:29Even if they get fit quickly,
- 45:31they are for a while at a higher
- 45:34risk of a mortality incident like that.
- 45:37I think that comes down to a little
- 45:38bit of personal accountability.
- 45:39I think anybody that's worth their salt is
- 45:42going to try to have that.
- 45:46It makes you more available to people when
- 45:49they know they can not just lean on
- 45:51you for encouragement and coaching and
- 45:54programming and nutrition advice,
- 45:55but also in their worst moment,
- 45:58they know you're still going to have their
- 45:59back and their best chance of survival is
- 46:02to work with you.
- 46:08You need some CPR?
- 46:10Yeah, that was just for demo purposes.
- 46:14I believe that every gym that operates in
- 46:16this country should have an AED and their
- 46:19staff is CPR certified.
- 46:23And I know I've been to gyms that
- 46:25did not have that.
- 46:28Yep.
- 46:29I believe that that should be I think
- 46:32that should be something that is legally
- 46:35required.
- 46:36Like what people don't realize about
- 46:37having an AED on site is you go
- 46:39you can literally put yourself on a map
- 46:40and you may be helping somebody that's not
- 46:42a member of your gym.
- 46:44Might be somebody at a business next door
- 46:46or right down the street and you are
- 46:47the closest responder.
- 46:49You know, I mean,
- 46:49that's that's just what it is.
- 46:51And they've become so inexpensive now.
- 46:53Like to have that and not need it
- 46:56is better than to need it and not
- 46:58have it.
- 46:59Always.
- 46:59Same goes for CPR.
- 47:00Yeah.
- 47:03Same goes for toilet paper.
- 47:05Yeah.
- 47:08Jake says, my question would be,
- 47:10why wouldn't you do it?
- 47:12Because Jar Jar Binks comes in and says,
- 47:14only the L three require CPR.
- 47:17Yeah.
- 47:17Okay.
- 47:18Yeah.
- 47:20But yeah,
- 47:20it only makes sense to have it.
- 47:22If you're going to be training people who
- 47:24are taking their body to exertion,
- 47:26you should have CPR certification.
- 47:31Still with me, Hicks?
- 47:32Or are you froze?
- 47:34I think I may have lost you.
- 47:36No, I can see you.
- 47:38You froze up on me,
- 47:39but you're back now.
- 47:40Yeah,
- 47:40I don't really know what happened there.
- 47:42But I'm still good.
- 47:45Can you see me?
- 47:45It's one of those radioactive deer.
- 47:47That's what it is.
- 47:48It must be close to the window.
- 47:50There it is.
- 47:52Uh,
- 47:54Mark Phillips and make it fairly there.
- 47:56Samaritan guidelines protection when using
- 47:59the AED.
- 48:00Yeah.
- 48:02Yeah.
- 48:02So, um,
- 48:03the good Samaritan laws are something that
- 48:05we operate off of.
- 48:12I think we, we,
- 48:13we hit a bad cell signal or something
- 48:15for Hicks.
- 48:16Yeah, maybe.
- 48:17I'm on Wi-Fi.
- 48:18I don't really know what's going on.
- 48:19I got some storms moving through,
- 48:20so maybe that's it.
- 48:23I do live in the boondocks.
- 48:28I know that Florida has some things.
- 48:30If you're an out-of-state medical
- 48:32provider, you can come work events,
- 48:33and it kind of protects you in that
- 48:35way.
- 48:39Yeah, but in this country,
- 48:41like the Good Samaritan Act,
- 48:42I wish it had more strength to it,
- 48:44but I don't think it has what it
- 48:46used to, and that's a shame.
- 48:49Yeah, I agree.
- 48:52Um, you know,
- 48:53I think safety is at everything I do.
- 48:55I'm even, uh,
- 48:56in terms of like hunting and stuff, I,
- 48:59I have private clients that I coach and
- 49:01I have them all develop an individual
