- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, Katie wall Van three sixty online at Mixed one
- 0:03Speaker 1: O four nine dot com.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It is twenty eight minutes after nine o'clock coming your way.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Very shortly.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We're going to be catching up with the Independent member
- 0:10Speaker 1: for our Robin Lamley. But joining me on the line
- 0:13Speaker 1: right now is one of our listeners, Christine, who did
- 0:18Speaker 1: indeed see what it unfolded yesterday at the CBD Woolworths.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Christine.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yeah, good morning Katie, and thank you for talking to me.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Well, I think it's incredibly important that everybody knows what
- 0:30Speaker 1: went on yesterday, Christine. I know that vision's gone about,
- 0:34Speaker 1: but tell us what happened.
- 0:37Speaker 3: It was about i'd say three thirty four o'clock in
- 0:39Speaker 3: the afternoon. In the morning previously to that, early in
- 0:43Speaker 3: the morning there was a few people fighting it with
- 0:46Speaker 3: chains and what have you. But later in the afternoon,
- 0:50Speaker 3: about three thirty or four o'clock, a whole heap of
- 0:54Speaker 3: people came in. I'm talking fourteen or so people came
- 0:59Speaker 3: in and they had chains and stuff. They jumped the
- 1:02Speaker 3: counter at Passages Cafe and thank god that lady wasn't there.
- 1:06Speaker 3: They took her knives. They ran amuck through the shopping center.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Customers were screaming. They were the chemists there. They shut
- 1:16Speaker 3: their doors, they were doing the customers doing the limbo
- 1:18Speaker 3: to get into their shop bws. They went in there,
- 1:22Speaker 3: got some bottles of wine, started smashing them. The front
- 1:26Speaker 3: window is smashed, hasn't been repaired yet. It was absolutely horrendous.
- 1:32Speaker 3: They were just running a mark, fighting with each other.
- 1:36Speaker 3: They had machetes, as I said, knives waving this big, huge,
- 1:40Speaker 3: big knife around. Customers were abs of screaming.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It was horrendous, bloody hell, Christine, what were the shoppers doing?
- 1:50Speaker 2: What were people doing inside?
- 1:52Speaker 3: They were running through their lives. If not, if they
- 1:54Speaker 3: weren't running, they were hiding. There was a whole heap
- 1:57Speaker 3: of people hiding in the bakery. They were just trying
- 2:00Speaker 3: to find a safe place to hide. But to tell
- 2:02Speaker 3: you the truth, nothing nowhere was safe. You know that
- 2:05Speaker 3: they had I think one or two security guards on.
- 2:08Speaker 3: They obviously couldn't do anything, and you can't blame them
- 2:11Speaker 3: for not doing anything. They would have gotten after a
- 2:14Speaker 3: machete over them. It's just unbelievable. And you know what,
- 2:18Speaker 3: this shopping cent is getting worse and worse all the time.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But yesterday's incident was horrendous and for visitors in the city,
- 2:28Speaker 3: what a joke, Like I sack. Someone come up to
- 2:31Speaker 3: me earlier this morning and said to me, I was
- 2:34Speaker 3: in here with her with her daughter, her daughter thirteen.
- 2:38Speaker 3: She couldn't go to school today. She was absolutely traumatized
- 2:42Speaker 3: by what happened yesterday, So you know, and also the
- 2:47Speaker 3: staff that worked there, like my.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Heart, incredibly frightening. And you know, Christine, I'm there regularly
- 2:54Speaker 1: with my kids. You know, I think to myself, what
- 2:58Speaker 1: would I do if I was with my kids and
- 3:00Speaker 1: they would be terrified one.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Hundred percent, Katie, You know, like I was terrified, and
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm growing up and there's people screaming, what a welcome,
- 3:11Speaker 3: welcome to dar One, What a joke. They need to
- 3:14Speaker 3: clean They need to clean this place up. They need
- 3:17Speaker 3: to move that bloody bust stop they've got there. Since
- 3:20Speaker 3: the bus stop's been moved, they've moved it from one
- 3:23Speaker 3: place to another. That's a problem. But the problem is
- 3:25Speaker 3: it's such a small place where the bus stop is,
- 3:29Speaker 3: and they congregate there, they fight with each other there.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It's a joke. Move the bus stop and do something
- 3:35Speaker 3: about it. The police took three hours I believe to come.
- 3:38Speaker 3: What mm hmm yep.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So the police were called, but they did not get
- 3:46Speaker 1: there for that period of time. Were they aware that
- 3:49Speaker 1: there was people with someone with a machete and knives?
- 3:52Speaker 3: I believe they were, yes, but that's what I got told. Yes,
- 3:57Speaker 3: I don't know, but OK, thank to someone in there,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and they said, the police took three hours to come.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Well, look, we'll see what we can find out. We
- 4:06Speaker 1: have certainly contacted the police. Seb who works in our newsroom,
- 4:12Speaker 1: has certainly contacted the police to see if we can
- 4:15Speaker 1: find out what exactly has happened. From their perspective, Christine,
- 4:20Speaker 1: what did you do when all of this was unfolding?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Did you just try and find somewhere where no one
- 4:25Speaker 1: could come near you?
- 4:26Speaker 3: So I went in my car. I thought, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 3: I mean, even the car park's not safe if they
- 4:32Speaker 3: come out and then start on the cars, and the
- 4:33Speaker 3: car park my car was sort of at the back.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I just got in in my car and just sat
- 4:40Speaker 3: there and I thought, I like sort of frozen. It
- 4:43Speaker 3: was horrible, absolutely horrible.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It sounds like a horrendous situation.
- 4:49Speaker 1: You know, for everybody that was there, an incredibly frightening situation. Now,
- 4:53Speaker 1: if this doesn't show the government and show our decision makers,
- 4:57Speaker 1: our leaders within the Northern Territory community, that we've got
- 5:00Speaker 1: a serious, serious problem.
- 5:02Speaker 2: On our hands, then I don't know what bloody will well.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I don't know that. I think, bring these people, these
- 5:08Speaker 3: government people that are working for the minister and whoever,
- 5:13Speaker 3: get them to come down here and stay here. Don't
- 5:15Speaker 3: come for ten minutes, stay here for half a day
- 5:18Speaker 3: a day, see what actually does go on. Because it's
- 5:20Speaker 3: not a rant. This is like bigger than what it
- 5:25Speaker 3: was normally, but it's every day. There's a problem here.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The kids come in, these weren't really kids, No, they
- 5:32Speaker 3: come in with knives, they're drunk. It's horrendous. They go
- 5:36Speaker 3: to the bus stop. People don't want to be in
- 5:37Speaker 3: the bus stop because it's not safe. I mean, what
- 5:40Speaker 3: the hell is the government doing?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Well, Christine, I really appreciate you speaking to us this morning.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I know that we're going to be catching up with
- 5:48Speaker 1: some other witnesses throughout the morning, but I think it's
- 5:50Speaker 1: really important that people are aware of exactly what has
- 5:53Speaker 1: gone on so we can try our best to make
- 5:56Speaker 1: some change.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time today
- 5:58Speaker 3: You so much, Katie, thank you, thank you,
