- 0:09Speaker 1: I was perusing geek social media.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Oh and I kept seeing references to John Williams.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Oh, like that makes you worried that he is And
- 0:19Speaker 3: so I.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Was worried that he was not fine. But he is fine.
- 0:21Speaker 1: He's just fine.
- 0:23Speaker 3: He's eighty something.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he's up there ninety three. Yeah, what will says.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That's what Google says. He's on my deadpool. Now.
- 0:32Speaker 2: This is John Williams, legendary composer, Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones. Well,
- 0:40Speaker 2: John Williams. The reason that he's all over geek social
- 0:43Speaker 2: media right now is he thinks that film music is
- 0:47Speaker 2: mid fifty four Oscar nominations, five Academy Awards for what
- 0:55Speaker 2: he does, and he doesn't think too highly of film music.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It was an interview in The Guard. He says, I
- 1:01Speaker 2: never liked film music very much. Film music, however good
- 1:04Speaker 2: it can be, and it usually isn't other than maybe
- 1:07Speaker 2: an eight minute stretch here and there. I think the
- 1:10Speaker 2: music isn't there that we all think of as this
- 1:15Speaker 2: precious gift film music is.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We're remembering it in some kind of nostalgic way.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Just the idea that film music has the same place
- 1:23Speaker 2: in the concert hall as the best music in the
- 1:26Speaker 2: cannon is a mistaken notion.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I think he's full of it.
- 1:32Speaker 2: He says, a lot of film music is apherimal. It's
- 1:35Speaker 2: certainly a fragmentary and until somebody reconstructs it, it isn't
- 1:39Speaker 2: anything that we can even consider as a concert piece.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Kind of get it.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I mean, you're not throwing on Indiana Jones theme music
- 1:48Speaker 4: just on your regular playlist, are you?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Bernard Hermann, how about that? Or Danny Elfman, how about that?
- 1:56Speaker 3: I'm not a.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Hard they would both say, John William the King. Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 5: Actually Danny Elfman took his cues from Bernard Herman.
- 2:04Speaker 3: He loved Bernard Herman.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But he went on to say that.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Even his high profile projects, at the end of the
- 2:12Speaker 2: day are just a job.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:17Speaker 4: The only music I've thrown on that is a part
- 2:19Speaker 4: of the movie is the soundtrack for both the latest
- 2:23Speaker 4: and forthcoming Tron movies. Okay, yeah, Daft Punk did the
- 2:27Speaker 4: last one and Nine Inch Nails is doing the new one.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But that's still more music than actual.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well then maybe that's what he means, so that we
- 2:35Speaker 2: need to reinvent it, and maybe maybe not.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Now has a sad version of some song You've heard
- 2:41Speaker 4: a thousand times.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Bernard Herman did the soundtrack for Citizen Kane The Day
- 2:48Speaker 5: the Earth Stood Still north By Northwest Taxi driver. He
- 2:54Speaker 5: you know, his stuff really stands up. Not according to
- 2:57Speaker 5: John Williams.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I thought when you started that out that he used
- 3:02Speaker 4: the phrase mid which was the most surprising part for me.
- 3:05Speaker 1: No, it was the person who wrote the story.
- 3:08Speaker 2: The new Toxic Avenger is hitting theaters this week after
- 3:11Speaker 2: a few years of delay, and my friend Rebecca saw
- 3:16Speaker 2: it and said that it was great. Yeah, hilariously gross
- 3:20Speaker 2: tale of mutation and redemption, and it also is going
- 3:24Speaker 2: to tackle some serious themes. There's a big moment that
- 3:27Speaker 2: comes early on. This isn't a spoiler where Peter Dinklage's
- 3:31Speaker 2: character Winston Goose before he becomes toxyop Avenger gooz.
- 3:36Speaker 1: It's like ooze, Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: He learns his expensive health insurance won't cover his life
- 3:42Speaker 2: or death medical treatment. Well, now the film is applying
- 3:46Speaker 2: some real world activism to that relatable crisis. The website
- 3:51Speaker 2: Bloody Disgusting, which is mostly reports on horror films and
- 3:54Speaker 2: things like that, in their blog, says that the Bloody
- 3:59Speaker 2: Disgusting and the Toxic Avenger film. They're all teaming up
- 4:02Speaker 2: with a company called Cineverse, which is distributing the Toxic
- 4:06Speaker 2: Avenger to boost the nonprofit undue medical debt. The group
- 4:11Speaker 2: states on its own site that its mission is to
- 4:13Speaker 2: strengthen communities by erasing financially burden some medical debt. Cinevers
- 4:19Speaker 2: is releaving at least five million dollars in medical debt
- 4:22Speaker 2: across the country where it's needed most with our own donation,
- 4:25Speaker 2: with the ticket sales leading to unlimited additional donations. So
- 4:29Speaker 2: if you buy a ticket to the Toxic Avengers, some
- 4:32Speaker 2: of that money Cineverse is going to give to people
- 4:35Speaker 2: who are in the situation where they can't afford their medical.
- 4:39Speaker 3: DEVI and did I hear you?
- 4:41Speaker 5: Was it you that said it or did I read
- 4:42Speaker 5: it somewhere that this version of the Toxic Avenger has
- 4:46Speaker 5: a real grindhouse kind of field.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's the look that they're going for.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Let's see, we talked about this briefly yesterday, but I
- 4:54Speaker 2: did some more digging on it. The people who created
- 4:57Speaker 2: Cobra Kai are remade King Knight writer.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Gonna and they're gonna do it in a movie. Are
- 5:06Speaker 1: you familiar with Night Writer?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Of course yet to make sure these these guys apparently
- 5:12Speaker 2: do this all the time. They are also the ones
- 5:15Speaker 2: who wrote a spin off for Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Now,
- 5:21Speaker 2: the project would not have centered on Ferris. The project
- 5:25Speaker 2: would have told the story of two valets who joy
- 5:28Speaker 2: ride the Ferrari when they parked in Chicago. The valets
- 5:34Speaker 2: went joy writing, do we need that so that that
- 5:37Speaker 2: that was the script that they wrote.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen that literally as a fan theory by
- 5:41Speaker 4: people for years.
- 5:42Speaker 3: But whenever I don't, I don't know why they don't
- 5:45Speaker 3: do it.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Redo Ferris Bueller's Day Off and make it so that
- 5:47Speaker 5: Ferris Bueller isn't such a dick.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Well, he is the villain of the story.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Yeah, the Night Writer could be something fun if they
- 5:54Speaker 4: adapt it into something gritty if they do it right.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And it could be find a hassle huff, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 1: and substitute.
- 6:00Speaker 3: There is no substitute for the Hall exactly.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Let's see BBC says that doctor who will carry on
- 6:09Speaker 2: with or without Disney? Okay, because Disney has he says,
- 6:14Speaker 2: Disney has been a great partnership. It continues to to
- 6:17Speaker 2: be a partner with the War between the Land and
- 6:19Speaker 2: the Sea next year. But going forward with or without Disney,
- 6:23Speaker 2: Doctor Who will still be on BBC. So if you
- 6:26Speaker 2: were wondering about that partnership, because Disney spent a ton
- 6:29Speaker 2: of money on the most recent seasons of Doctor Who
- 6:33Speaker 2: and they weren't very successful. So Disney's thinking of pulling out,
- 6:38Speaker 2: But there you go.
