Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: To night.
- 0:00Speaker 2: We're going to start a new series. This is going
- 0:03Speaker 2: to be a music video reaction series. And basically what
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm going to do with this is try to get
- 0:10Speaker 2: some input, try to get some suggestions from anyone watching
- 0:14Speaker 2: out there. I want to know if you can recommend
- 0:17Speaker 2: me some of the weirdest, most unsettling, unusual music videos
- 0:22Speaker 2: you can find. This is something I just picked five
- 0:26Speaker 2: off the top of my head that really stood out
- 0:28Speaker 2: to me from whenever I was in my youth, whenever
- 0:31Speaker 2: I was growing up, these music videos always stuck with
- 0:35Speaker 2: me for one reason or another, whether.
- 0:37Speaker 1: They're creepy, disturbing, you name it.
- 0:41Speaker 2: This was definitely something that I think everybody went through,
- 0:45Speaker 2: especially when MTV and VH one were constantly playing music
- 0:49Speaker 2: videos and music videos were I don't know more of
- 0:52Speaker 2: a thing. That's something that I'm interested in is if
- 0:55Speaker 2: somebody that's younger or listens to a lot of newer music,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they still make weird music videos, and if so, please
- 1:03Speaker 2: send me some recommendations. I'd love to check them out.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But I'm a little out of touch. I'm a little
- 1:09Speaker 2: out of touch with new music. What can I say,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm stuck in the past. I'm a slave to the
- 1:15Speaker 2: old ways, if you know what I'm saying, the glory
- 1:20Speaker 2: days of MTV. Praise the Almighty Carson Daily for blessing
- 1:24Speaker 2: me with so many good memories and so many fun
- 1:27Speaker 2: music videos and tlr TRL countdowns to watch after I
- 1:34Speaker 2: got home from school. If you're watching this on YouTube
- 1:36Speaker 2: or Spotify or listening to it wherever, I am going
- 1:40Speaker 2: to play the five music videos that I've picked out
- 1:43Speaker 2: for this, but because if I show them to you
- 1:47Speaker 2: through any of those streaming services, the video is gonna
- 1:51Speaker 2: get taken down. Even one single music video would get
- 1:54Speaker 2: me taken down for sure. So if you want to
- 1:57Speaker 2: watch along to the full videos and listen to the
- 1:59Speaker 2: song and everything, I'm gonna post that on Patreon. I
- 2:04Speaker 2: think it'll be safe to post on Patreon, So click
- 2:07Speaker 2: the link in the description, get onto my Patreon. I'll
- 2:10Speaker 2: post it up there. You can watch it, listen all
- 2:13Speaker 2: the music. It'll be great. If you're going this route,
- 2:15Speaker 2: then you'll still get my commentary. I'll play the music
- 2:19Speaker 2: videos and then react to them and talk about my
- 2:24Speaker 2: history with some of these music videos. So without further ado,
- 2:28Speaker 2: let's get into with our This is the one that
- 2:31Speaker 2: stands out to me, I think the most when I
- 2:32Speaker 2: think about weird, offbeat music videos from my childhood. Here
- 2:38Speaker 2: we go with mister Bungle. The song is called Travolta,
- 2:42Speaker 2: So here goes nothing.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Nice.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Shout out to a dial up internet. Uh oh, we're
- 3:26Speaker 2: gonna have ads on. I'm gonna turn the volume down
- 3:28Speaker 2: for these fucking ads though, because I don't want to
- 3:30Speaker 2: hear that bullshit. Yeah, shout out to dial up internet,
- 3:34Speaker 2: because I don't think I would have heard about the
- 3:39Speaker 2: Travolta song if it wasn't for the Internet. I don't
- 3:42Speaker 2: think that's when I ever saw on MTV or anything
- 3:46Speaker 2: like that. At least I don't remember seeing it. It
- 3:48Speaker 2: might have played, I'm sure it probably did. The band
- 3:52Speaker 2: mister Bungle. I feel like they're famous for having Mike
- 3:55Speaker 2: Patton as the vocalist from the band Faith. No more
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know you know the band Faith. The more they
- 4:00Speaker 2: have the song I can't remember what the song is called,
- 4:05Speaker 2: the do you Want It All but you Can't Have
- 4:07Speaker 2: It song?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Epic.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they had a weird music video for that one too.
- 4:12Speaker 2: There's like a goldfish that dies in it or something,
- 4:14Speaker 2: or at least they show a goldfish flopping on the
- 4:16Speaker 2: ground for a while.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So, you know, Mike.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Patton kind of a weird dude, does a lot of
- 4:22Speaker 2: interesting music projects. I think he did vocals for the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Dillinger Escape Plan for a little bit or at least
- 4:28Speaker 2: one album. Pretty fun stuff. Pretty fun stuff there with
- 4:33Speaker 2: Mister Bungle. Definitely feels like one of those music videos
- 4:38Speaker 2: where they just had a checklist of every like creepy
- 4:42Speaker 2: or unsettling thing that you can think of. We saw
- 4:45Speaker 2: a lot of baby dolls in that music video, like
- 4:48Speaker 2: dirty baby dolls getting their heads kicked off and stuff
- 4:52Speaker 2: like that. There's a lot of creepy masks, like a
- 4:55Speaker 2: lot of old man masks. I think I even saw
- 4:57Speaker 2: like a Native American mask in there, and they're kind
- 4:59Speaker 2: of like, you know, messing around with the masks. Speaking
- 5:02Speaker 2: of masks, there's also a gimp suit mask that Mike
- 5:07Speaker 2: Patten's wearing and he's constantly like touching the lips of
- 5:10Speaker 2: it with a cross, which brings on our next box
- 5:15Speaker 2: to check, which is religious imagery. Just throw some religious
- 5:19Speaker 2: stuff in there, because you've got as off kilter with
- 5:23Speaker 2: all this you know, unsettling stuff. It's very suggestive as
- 5:28Speaker 2: far as like sexual stuff with the s and M
- 5:31Speaker 2: bondage mask, as well as the almost violent stuff that's
- 5:36Speaker 2: going on in this video, Like you don't really see
- 5:38Speaker 2: anything except for you got like the five or six
- 5:41Speaker 2: guys that are hanging from the ceiling. You know that's
- 5:45Speaker 2: that's violent, I guess. But then you got the guy
- 5:47Speaker 2: pulling out the saw and the meat cleaver, and just
- 5:51Speaker 2: a lot of really suggestive stuff like that, and you
- 5:53Speaker 2: throw in any religious imagery on top of that, you're
- 5:56Speaker 2: gonna get a weird music video, especially whenever that came
- 6:00Speaker 2: I'm guessing that came out in the nineties, just assuming
- 6:03Speaker 2: and what else?
- 6:03Speaker 1: What else have we got in there?
- 6:06Speaker 2: Oh, there's a lot of inverted colors. That's always going
- 6:12Speaker 2: to scare you. If you're afraid of inverted collors, don't
- 6:15Speaker 2: watch that music video. Scare the shit at of you.
- 6:19Speaker 2: What else was there? I don't really remember seeing any
- 6:21Speaker 2: bugs though, which is kind of surprising. That's one of
- 6:23Speaker 2: those music videos with everything else that has going on.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I would assume there'd be like a close up of
- 6:28Speaker 2: like maggots or cockroaches or something, but they restrain themselves
- 6:33Speaker 2: a little bit. They're saving that for the next music video.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'm sure on top of all the visuals you got
- 6:41Speaker 2: going on there, just an odd song altogether. It's very
- 6:45Speaker 2: like dis dissonant, discordant or whatever.
- 6:50Speaker 1: A lot of really.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Interesting sounding instruments, like almost like an organ a lot
- 6:55Speaker 2: of the time with a synthesizer and like really bassy
- 6:59Speaker 2: sounding synth sizor like kind of kicking in some of
- 7:02Speaker 2: those almost like diminished sounding chords or whatever it's got
- 7:06Speaker 2: going on there. And then that has the couple of
- 7:08Speaker 2: moments where it does a little jazz break where it
- 7:11Speaker 2: almost sounds like a doors song, like the organ solo
- 7:15Speaker 2: or whatever that's going over the jazz drums. Yeah, just
- 7:18Speaker 2: a really interesting piece of music there. We got with
- 7:22Speaker 2: the song Trivolta by mister Bungle, and you've already caught
- 7:26Speaker 2: a little peep into what's next. This is gonna be
- 7:29Speaker 2: definitely a more mainstream, more conventional weird song that was
- 7:33Speaker 2: on MTV all the fucking time, and I remember seeing
- 7:38Speaker 2: this one quite a lot. We'll talk about it after
- 7:40Speaker 2: we watch it. We're going with the one of the
- 7:44Speaker 2: most recognizable weird music video guys out there, Marilyn Manson
- 7:49Speaker 2: with the Dope Show. That's a cup of piss there,
- 7:56Speaker 2: he's got a beaker full of piss. Oh nice, let's
- 8:25Speaker 2: get this fucking volume done. Oh, Marilyn Manson. So, I
- 8:30Speaker 2: think the thing that stands out to me the most
- 8:33Speaker 2: after watching the Marilyn Manson music video is just the
- 8:37Speaker 2: fact that we Me and Ray from Spooky Nerd Club
- 8:41Speaker 2: just got done watching Lost Highway last week, and obviously
- 8:45Speaker 2: you have Marilyn Manson and Twiggy making cameos in that movie. Fantastic.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I love that they're in that movie. I love that
- 8:52Speaker 2: David Lynch was friends with them and put them in
- 8:54Speaker 2: that mute uh in that in the movie Lost Highway.
- 8:57Speaker 2: What a what an iconic band and performer Marilyn Manson is.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I mean one of those things where, like I don't
- 9:05Speaker 2: even remember how old I was whenever his music videos
- 9:09Speaker 2: started to really become popular. I remember watching The Dope
- 9:12Speaker 2: Show and the Beautiful People music videos quite a bit
- 9:16Speaker 2: when I was, you know, pre high school into high
- 9:19Speaker 2: school and stuff like that, and I really liked those songs.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I didn't really get Marilyn Manson at the time. It
- 9:26Speaker 2: took me. Sorry, some fucking flew in my throat there,
- 9:33Speaker 2: fucking fly climbed in it's from watching all these disturbing videos. Anyway,
- 9:40Speaker 2: it took me a while to really understand Marilyn Manson
- 9:44Speaker 2: and what the whole point of the band was and
- 9:47Speaker 2: everything like that. I really love what the song is about,
- 9:52Speaker 2: what the dope, the you know, the whole thing dealing
- 9:55Speaker 2: with the music industry, and just kind of like shining
- 9:58Speaker 2: a light on that. I think that's really always really
- 10:02Speaker 2: kind of refreshing to hear from somebody that's as big
- 10:05Speaker 2: as Marilyn Manson is and was at that time. And
- 10:09Speaker 2: this this is one of those things where like I
- 10:11Speaker 2: remember not necessarily really thinking that Marilyn Manson was like
- 10:16Speaker 2: a scary person per se, like in a horror movie.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Since more just like I thought like if I, as
- 10:23Speaker 2: a child, if I was ever going to be molested,
- 10:25Speaker 2: that it would be by somebody like that, you know
- 10:28Speaker 2: what I mean, that looked like him, like you know,
- 10:31Speaker 2: a big spooky guy with skinny legs and penis and
- 10:35Speaker 2: boobs or whatever. As a kid, to me, that was
- 10:40Speaker 2: just too much for my brain to handle. Kind of think,
- 10:42Speaker 2: is there anything else to really say about Marilyn Manson?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Not really other than for some reason I was thinking
- 10:57Speaker 2: that was the video that had like the people with
- 10:59Speaker 2: the big eyes, like the alien eyes or something, or
- 11:03Speaker 2: I know that's in the Aerials music video by System
- 11:05Speaker 2: of a Down, but I thought that was also in
- 11:07Speaker 2: a Marilyn Manson music video. Am I let me know
- 11:10Speaker 2: in the comments somebody start recommending me more music videos
- 11:14Speaker 2: to watch, because I can't think. I can't even keep
- 11:17Speaker 2: these damn music videos straight anymore. These were all cataloged
- 11:21Speaker 2: in my brain when I was a teenager, but for
- 11:23Speaker 2: some reason now it's just like everything's fucking mixed up
- 11:26Speaker 2: in there. I got too many other things to think about.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I guess damn it. All right, let's get on with
- 11:33Speaker 2: the next one. This is going to be primus with
- 11:36Speaker 2: Wenona's fantastic. That music video definitely fall more into the
- 12:01Speaker 2: like Uncanny Valley category as far as music videos go,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and one of the reasons is because they filmed it
- 12:12Speaker 2: in halftime and then sped it up to full time
- 12:16Speaker 2: to give the effect that they were moving in this
- 12:19Speaker 2: like inhuman way, and it works so well. Not to
- 12:23Speaker 2: mention obviously, the costumes, the prosthetics, everything that they have
- 12:27Speaker 2: going on in this video. It's unreal. It's it's one
- 12:30Speaker 2: of those things where I feel like all of these
- 12:33Speaker 2: music videos, and especially music videos around this time, had
- 12:37Speaker 2: a lot more attention to detail put into them. Like
- 12:40Speaker 2: with this music video, they have these incredible, incredible looking costumes,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but then at the same time, whenever the lyrics kick in,
- 12:51Speaker 2: it's literally just a lyric video slide show with like
- 12:55Speaker 2: these cartoon drawings of what the singer what Wes Claypool
- 12:59Speaker 2: was talking about. So the whole thing just cracks me
- 13:02Speaker 2: up because it's like, obviously there's a lot of care,
- 13:05Speaker 2: a big production really went into this music video, and uh,
- 13:09Speaker 2: and then that's how they do that's how they fill
- 13:11Speaker 2: out the middle parts. It just it's so funny, it's
- 13:14Speaker 2: so fitting for Primus. Honestly, I'm kind of late to
- 13:19Speaker 2: the game as far as Primus goes. I didn't start
- 13:22Speaker 2: smoking weed until I was an adult, so I didn't
- 13:25Speaker 2: feel really feel like I could get into Primus as
- 13:30Speaker 2: a teenager, if you know what I'm saying. I didn't
- 13:32Speaker 2: think I was allowed to listen to Primus until I
- 13:35Speaker 2: started smoking weed, So I just kind of you know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: I heard that this song, I heard like John the Fisherman,
- 13:41Speaker 2: Too Many Puppies, you know, the songs everybody hears and
- 13:46Speaker 2: Primus has this great history, this great backstory of how
- 13:50Speaker 2: their band got started. Their first album is like a
- 13:53Speaker 2: live album which is on you know, unheard of, unprecedented really,
- 13:57Speaker 2: and then you got less Claypool trying out for Metallic
- 14:00Speaker 2: at one point, which trying to imagine that is impossible.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I feel like he would have just taken over the
- 14:06Speaker 2: whole damn band. He would have become. He would have
- 14:09Speaker 2: been playing Kirk Hammett's guitar parts on the bass and
- 14:13Speaker 2: just totally fucking flip the band on its head. It
- 14:16Speaker 2: would have been insane. So let's go ahead and get
- 14:18Speaker 2: into our next music video. Yes, that's right, the classic
- 14:23Speaker 2: Aphex twin Come to Daddy.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Had to throw this one on there. What's this old
- 14:51Speaker 1: bitch up to nice?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Snap your W two and file your taxes on free
- 15:27Speaker 2: plus get your biggest refund? Oh Aphix twin with Come
- 15:41Speaker 2: to Daddy. Uh God damn. That is one of those
- 15:48Speaker 2: music videos that if you are in the horror and
- 15:50Speaker 2: stuff like that, I mean, that music video feels like
- 15:53Speaker 2: a short horror movie really, and the music suits it
- 15:57Speaker 2: so well. That's one of the things I really enjoy
- 16:00Speaker 2: Twins music as well as their music videos, and overall,
- 16:04Speaker 2: the guy just seems really cool. Seems like a really
- 16:09Speaker 2: cool and interesting guy. I don't know what his name
- 16:12Speaker 2: is there anything like that, but whoever is in charge
- 16:14Speaker 2: of Apex Twin, I love that he always has that
- 16:18Speaker 2: same facial expression or whatever on all of the music
- 16:22Speaker 2: video characters, like with that one with all the kids
- 16:25Speaker 2: running around and they all just look like his face.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It's so fucking funny. And also there was something about
- 16:31Speaker 2: him that I saw recently where there's like an autistic
- 16:35Speaker 2: twelve year old that was making like fan fan videos
- 16:39Speaker 2: or fan music videos on his YouTube channel and uploading
- 16:43Speaker 2: him to Aphex Twin songs. So the guy reached out
- 16:46Speaker 2: to the kid and let him direct a music video,
- 16:49Speaker 2: like an official music video for one of his songs.
- 16:52Speaker 2: And I just think that's badass. That's something everybody should do,
- 16:56Speaker 2: be a little bit more in touch and a little
- 16:58Speaker 2: more aware of like your fan base and stuff like that.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And you know, if your job is just to make
- 17:06Speaker 2: music and stuff, you think you could be a little
- 17:09Speaker 2: bit more like grounded and in touch with your fans
- 17:14Speaker 2: in the world around you. It's just really charming to see,
- 17:18Speaker 2: especially from somebody that makes music as weird as that,
- 17:22Speaker 2: it's really really cool. There was a couple of things
- 17:25Speaker 2: I forgot to mention about Marilyn Manson earlier, and one
- 17:27Speaker 2: of them is obviously like him removing his red to
- 17:30Speaker 2: suck his dick. That is one hundred percent true. Actually,
- 17:33Speaker 2: I know everybody says it's not true. It's true. I
- 17:36Speaker 2: read his book. It's in there. It's a fact. Anyway,
- 17:41Speaker 2: On a lighter note, or to our final music video,
- 17:44Speaker 2: and this one is definitely a childhood treat. This was
- 17:48Speaker 2: one that I haven't watched many of these since I
- 17:51Speaker 2: was probably a teenager. So this is kind of an
- 17:53Speaker 2: interesting like refresher on some of these music videos, and honestly,
- 17:58Speaker 2: I would say most of them hold up, like from
- 18:01Speaker 2: what I remember the way I remember enjoying these as
- 18:04Speaker 2: a kid, I still think they're really great music videos.
- 18:07Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised by this entire list. We'll
- 18:13Speaker 2: just finish it out with this. If you are listening
- 18:15Speaker 2: to this and you want to watch along with the
- 18:17Speaker 2: music videos, like I said earlier, go to Patreon. It's
- 18:21Speaker 2: in the link. You can sign up there. You can
- 18:23Speaker 2: get a Patreon subscription for as little as three dollars
- 18:28Speaker 2: and eleven cents. There's plenty of other tiers on there,
- 18:31Speaker 2: but they all get you the same thing. It just
- 18:33Speaker 2: depends on what kind of shit you're into. The three
- 18:36Speaker 2: eleven prices obviously for fans of three eleven. Then we
- 18:39Speaker 2: got the four to twenty price for the weed smokers.
- 18:42Speaker 2: We got the five dollars and one cent price for
- 18:44Speaker 2: Abraham Lincoln fans, you know, and so on and so forth.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I think we got a stone cold price at three sixteen.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Like I said, it just depends on what kind of
- 18:54Speaker 2: shit you're into. So the last music video of the night,
- 18:56Speaker 2: we're going to cap it off here, have a good
- 18:59Speaker 2: night everyone, Bust Rhymes, give me some mo.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Win the club, hoping your mount any baby, you can
- 19:21Speaker 3: give me everybody let.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Me oh ship. You know.
- 19:33Speaker 2: We had to end up with a fun one, Bust Rhymes,
- 19:37Speaker 2: The King of the Fish Islands. The Fish is Lens
- 19:39Speaker 2: was all over the place in the nineties, you cann't
- 19:41Speaker 2: get away from it and rat music videos. Buster Rhymes
- 19:45Speaker 2: is one of my favorite rappers, especially from this era,
- 19:48Speaker 2: just because of he seems like a fun guy. I
- 19:51Speaker 2: love all the goofy costumes, all the silly ship that
- 19:55Speaker 2: goes on in these music videos. The little kid that
- 19:57Speaker 2: turns into the Blue Monster and chases the made around.
- 20:01Speaker 2: What a funny What a funny premise for music video. Honestly,
- 20:06Speaker 2: I don't have too much else to say about busta rhymes, ma'am.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I love the giant suits, the muscle suits. All that
- 20:15Speaker 2: shit is hilarious. Honestly, Well, that's.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Gonna do it.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Part one for the Zaniest music Videos out in the
- 20:21Speaker 2: world is complete. Please send me some recommendations. I'd love
- 20:25Speaker 2: to keep this going with Part two and Infinity. We'll
- 20:29Speaker 2: keep doing this forever.
