- 0:01All in her made it with that mighty hour, as if the last
- 0:05remnant had been slain by death of the humanity that once was
- 0:10hers, assuming a spiritual wide control, making life see a
- 0:17mirror of heaven's sky. The young divinity in her
- 0:21earthly limbs filled with celestial strength, her mortal
- 0:25part. Over was the haunted pain, the
- 0:29rending fear. Her grief had passed away.
- 0:34Her mind was still, her heart beat quietly with a sovereign
- 0:39force. There came a freedom from the
- 0:42heartstring's clutch. Now all her acts sprang from a
- 0:47godhead's calm. Calmly she laid upon the forest
- 0:52soil the dead who still reposed upon her breast, and bore to
- 0:56turn away from the dead form soul.
- 1:00Now she rose to meet the dreadful God.
- 1:05That mightier spirit turned its mastering gaze on life and
- 1:08things inheritor of a work left to it unfinished from her
- 1:13halting past. When yet the mind, a passionate
- 1:17learner, toiled and I'll shaped instruments were crudely moved,
- 1:23transcended. Now was the poor human rule, a
- 1:27sovereign power? Was there a God like Will?
- 1:31A moment, yet she lingered motionless, and looked down on
- 1:36the dead man at her feet. Then, like a tree recovering
- 1:41from a wind, she raised her noble head.
- 1:44Fronting her gaze, something stood there, unearthly, sombre,
- 1:49grand, a limitless denial of all being that wore the terror and
- 1:55wonder of a shape. In its appalling eyes.
- 1:59The tenebrous form bore the deep pity of destroying gods.
- 2:05A sorrowful irony curved the dreadful lips that speak the
- 2:10word of doom. Eternal night in the dire beauty
- 2:15of an immortal face, pitying a rose, receiving all that lives
- 2:20forever into its fathomless heart.
- 2:23Refuge of creatures from their anguish and world pain.
- 2:29His shape was nothing is made real, His limbs were monuments
- 2:34of transience, and beneath brows of unwearying calm, large God
- 2:39like lids silent beheld the writhing serpent life unmoved.
- 2:45Their timeless, wide, unchanging gaze had seen the unprofitable
- 2:50cycles past, survived the passing of unnumbered stars and
- 2:56sheltered still the same immutable orbs.
- 3:01The two opposed each other with their eyes, woman and universal
- 3:06God around her, piling their void, unbearable loneliness upon
- 3:13her mighty uncompanioned soul. Many inhuman solitudes came
- 3:18close, vacant eternities forbidding hope laid upon her
- 3:24their huge and lifeless look, and to her ears silencing
- 3:30earthly sounds. A sad and formidable voice
- 3:35arose, which seemed the whole adverse worlds.
- 3:40Unclasp it cried thy passionate influence, and relax, O slave of
- 3:45nature, changing tool of changeless law, Who vainly
- 3:50writhes rebellion to my yoke Thy elemental grasp.
- 3:55Weep and forget, Entomb thy passion in its living grave.
- 4:00Leave now the once loved spirits abandoned robe.
- 4:04Pass, lonely, back to thy vain life on earth.
- 4:09It ceased. She moved not, and it spoke
- 4:13again, lowering its mighty key to human chords.
- 4:19Yet a dread cry behind the uttered sounds, echoing all
- 4:23sadness and immortal scorn, moaned like a hunger of far
- 4:28wandering waves. Wilt thou forever keep thy
- 4:33passion at hold thyself a creature doomed like him to
- 4:37pass, denying his soul Death's calm and silent rest.
- 4:42Relax thy grasp. This body is earth's and thine.
- 4:46His spirit now belongs to a greater power.
- 4:50Woman, thy husband suffers. Savitri drew back her heart's
- 4:56forest that clasped his body still where from her lap
- 5:01renounced on the smooth grass softly.
- 5:04It lay as often before in sleep, when from their couch she rose
- 5:09in the white dawn, called by her daily tasks.
- 5:13Now, too, as if called, she rose and stood gathered in lonely
- 5:19strength, like one who drops his mantle for a race and waits, the
- 5:24signal motionlessly swift, She knew not to what course her
- 5:31spirit Above, on the crypt summit of her secret form, like
- 5:35one left Sentinel on a mountain Crest, a fiery footed splendor,
- 5:40poison winged, watched, flaming silent with her voiceless soul,
- 5:46like a still sail upon a windless sea, White, passionless
- 5:51it road and anchored might waiting.
- 5:54What far ridged impulse should arise out of the eternal depths,
- 5:59and cast its surge? Then death.
- 6:04The king lean boundless down, as leans night over tired lands,
- 6:10When evening pails and fading gleams breakdown the horizons
- 6:15walls. Nor yet the dust grows Mystic
- 6:19with the moon. The dim and awful godhead rose
- 6:22erect from his brief, stooping to his touch on earth.
- 6:26And like a dream that wakes out of a dream, forsaking the poor
- 6:31mold of that dead clay, another luminous satyavan arose,
- 6:37starting upright from the recumbent earth, as if someone
- 6:41over viewless border stepped, emerging on the edge of unseen
- 6:46worlds in the earth's day. The silent marvel stood between
- 6:51the mortal woman and the God. Such seemed he, as if one
- 6:56departed, came wearing the light of a celestial shape splendidly
- 7:01alien to the mortal air. The mind sought things long
- 7:05loved, and fell back, foiled from unfamiliar hues, beheld yet
- 7:11longed by the sweet radiant form, unsatisfied, incredulous
- 7:17of its two bright hints of heaven, too strange, the
- 7:21brilliant phantasm to life's clasp, desiring the warm
- 7:26creations of the earth, reared in the ardor of material Suns,
- 7:31the senses seized in vain a glorious shade only the spirit
- 7:38knew, the spirit still, and the heart divine.
- 7:41The old loved heart, though changed between two realms, he
- 7:47stood, not wavering, but fixed in quiet, strong expectancy,
- 7:53Like one who sightless listens for a command.
- 7:58So were they immobile on that earthly field, powers not of
- 8:03earth, though one in human clay. On either side of 1-2 spirits
- 8:09strove. Silence battled with silence,
- 8:12vast with vast. But now the impulse of the path
- 8:17was felt, moving from the silence that supports the stars
- 8:22to touch the confines of the visible world.
- 8:26Luminous, he moved away. Behind him death went slowly
- 8:31with his noiseless tread as seen in dream built fields.
- 8:36A shadowy herdsman glides behind some wanderer from his voiceless
- 8:41herds, and Savitri moved behind eternal death.
- 8:46Her mortal pace was equalled with the gods.
- 8:50Wordless, she travelled in her lover's steps, planting her
- 8:54human feet where his had trod into the perilous silences
- 9:00beyond.
