- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Divine Worth Podcast,
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: where we are letting go of our self-doubt,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: anxiety, fear,
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: limiting beliefs so that we can step into the divine roles that God has for us.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I am your host,
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Life Coach Karen Papin,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: and together we are embracing our divine worth and potential.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: And so I started a Substack to hold myself accountable and
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: to this new goal that I have in improving my writing.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And so on that,
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: I share more I've been writing these letters to the one that are about helping you
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: to feel seen, to feel heard, to recognize that God loves you.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And there are also letters of things that I want my kids to know as well.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: And so I've been writing these letters to the one
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: and also just doing writing exercises and just sharing a The things
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: that I am writing so that I can just learn and grow and get better because
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: the only way I'm going to get better with my writing is by actually taking
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: that action and writing.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And so that's what I've been doing over the summer in addition
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: to just spending more time with my kids and enjoying that they've been home.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: They're back at school now.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: I am excited for this season of the Divine Worth Podcast.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I've been doing as I've been doing my Substack is to just do
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: a free write.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: And what that is,
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: is I just take time to,
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: I grab my writing notebook and I just write whatever comes to my mind
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: without really censoring what it is that's coming out.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And sometimes this can be a really beneficial exercise to do
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: when you are feeling depressed or anxious.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: If you're feeling grief,
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: To just be able to write out the emotions that you're feeling because
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: the interesting thing about being able to do that is it is a huge release
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: because what happens is that part of ourself
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: that is feeling these unresolved emotions begins to feel seen and heard.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: We're no longer hiding or trying to hide those emotions,
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: trying to act like we don't have them,
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: but we are actually acknowledging and experiencing So that we can process them and
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: then ultimately be able to move forward in the ways that we want to move forward.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And so that is something that I've been doing
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: with my Substack is really also just writing out.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Whatever it is that comes to my mind,
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: whatever it is I'm feeling, and then processing those emotions through my writing.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And yet sometimes it can be hard to do that because inside there's this desire
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: to want to edit myself, want to edit the things that I'm saying.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: And yet the most powerful writing happens.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And so if you are someone who finds yourself editing yourself throughout your day,
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: keeping you from trying something new because you're afraid to fail,
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you have trouble beginning a conversation with someone else
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: because you've got all these ways that you're editing yourself
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: before you're actually even opening your mouth to talk to someone.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe you're someone who replays things over and over and over again in your mind.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: That's something that I have really struggled with in
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: the past is just ruminating even afterwards.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: After a conversation or a mistake that I made, I start just replaying it over and over again.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And I've come just a long way as I've learned some of these tools, such as this free writing.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you feel stuck in shame anytime you make a mistake and you just struggle
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: to really let go of those mistakes.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Eve's story is something that I feel is really helpful.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: In relation to all of these things, for those of us who do tend to edit ourselves.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: And so with that, let's learn a little bit more about Eve.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Eve was the first woman on earth.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: That is something that can seem so unfathomable to me.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Because sometimes in our lives, we feel alone.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Sometimes as As a mom myself,
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I can feel at such a loss for what to do for my kids and for those I love.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Not even just my kids,
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: but for anyone who we are called to serve,
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: we can feel at a loss and not really know how to move forward.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: And so I can only imagine what Eve must have experienced with and been feeling
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: to be someone who really was the first one and paving the way for all of
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: the other women who would come after her.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: She did not have a mortal mother to be able to help her to know how
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: to nurse her babies or to know when to push them to step outside their comfort zones
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: and when to rein them in and to And so, Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: They were told not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: And when Satan came tempting Eve, she desired to be able to know good from evil.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And so, she partook of the fruit.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And then she goes and she gets Adam to partake of the fruit.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And then what happens is they are kicked out of the Garden of Eden because
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: of this transgression that they chose.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: They still believe that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: So I want to go into Moses chapter 5 because there's something very interesting
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: that is said within these verses.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So they've been cast out.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: It says,
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: So they are
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: still putting their faith and trust in the Lord,
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: and they understand that they made a decision that caused them to be kicked out of
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: the Garden of Eden, and they are accepting of the Lord's decision in that.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And then what happens is the angel says unto them,
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: This thing is the similitude of the sacrifice of the only begotten of the Father,
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: which is full of grace and truth.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Wherefore thou shalt do all that thou doest in the name of the Son,
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: and thou shalt repent and call upon God in the name of the Son forevermore.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: So here they're talking about,
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: you have been asked to do these sacrifices because they are showing you what
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: the Savior does for you.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: And yes, you made this choice.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, you have fallen because of this choice.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: But there is a way.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: And in that day the Holy Ghost fell upon Adam,
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: which beareth record of the Father and the Son, saying,
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: I am the only begotten of the Father from the beginning,
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: henceforth and forever,
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: that as thou hast fallen,
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: thou mayest be redeemed, and all mankind, even as many as will.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: And then in verse 10,
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And in that day Adam blessed God,
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: and was filled,
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: and began to prophesy concerning all the families of the earth, saying,
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Blessed be the name of God,
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: for because of my transgression my eyes are opened,
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: and in this life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: And then verse 11,
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And Eve his wife heard all these things and was glad, saying,
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Were it not for our transgression,
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: we never should have had seed,
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: and never should have known good and evil,
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: and the joy
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And so this beautiful understanding comes over them
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: that this was actually part of the plan.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: That we would come here,
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: that we would make mistakes,
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: and that we would have a Savior to be able to help us to overcome those mistakes and
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: to be able to learn from them and to be able to And so,
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Eve's story teaches us something beautiful.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: That mistakes are real.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: We have a Savior to be able to help us overcome each one of those mistakes.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: We can see God's love through Eve of this experience where she made a decision where
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: because of that decision she fell and allowed us to be able to come into this earth.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: I imagine that as the first woman,
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: as the first mother here on this earth,
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: that there were many times that Eve felt like she was not doing a very good job,
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: where she was making a mistake,
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: where she did not know how to overcome those weaknesses,
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: and yet she was given the Savior to be able to help her to overcome time
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: and time again.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Another example from Eve that I don't think we actually really think of
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: from Eve's perspective is that her sons Cain and Abel were,
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: is that Cain was her son and he killed his brother Abel.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And just imagine the heartache that Eve must have held in learning about that,
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: in the grief of having not only lost her son,
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: but Having lost Abel because of the action of another one of her sons.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And just the heartache.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Eve felt it all too.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Eve knows what it's like to go through hard things.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: And she also knows what it's like to continue to move forward.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: And just the courage she must have had to be able to have kids after that as well.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Being able to give birth to Seth and raise him and teach him to follow God's path.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Even after having, I'm sure, felt like she had failed in some way or another.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Is a story of redemption.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: It's a story of helping our weaknesses become strengths.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying that Cain's actions were a result of anything Eve did or did not do.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Because Cain had his agency and Satan was there tempting him.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And that his choices were on him.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: However, as a mom, as someone who knows what it's like to wonder...
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: What if I did this?
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Or what if I did that?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And just start ruminating on all of those mistakes and things
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: that I could have possibly done and wonder, would that have made a difference?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: I imagine that Eve probably felt some of those things as well.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And so we can learn from Eve and from her story because the Lord was there for her
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: and He helped her to Understand that joy of redemption.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: He helped her to be able to have the strength to have more kids even after that.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: And sometimes that can be really hard to think, am I really going to go through this again?
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Where someone who had struggled with infertility towards the beginning
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: of my marriage and had a miscarriage and just the pain that each month would bring.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: To have the courage to continue in such a journey of having lost and
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: yet trying again is something that we can also learn from Eve as well, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: It takes courage.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: It takes strength.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And the beautiful thing about Eve's story is that you actually do see
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: that God was there with her throughout her story.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: We learn about God's plan from Eve,
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: that we are here to be tested and that we will make mistakes,
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: yet God has given us this beautiful plan of having the Savior to help us
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: to overcome these mistakes and to rise and to become stronger and to be able to
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: So for those of you who do struggle with illuminating,
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: for those of you who do struggle with feeling like you shouldn't be making mistakes,
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: remember Eve and remember how she overcame and the joy that she found
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: from her redemption.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: And remember that you are as Eve.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: In Ether 1227, the Lord tells us that He gives
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I remember
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: hearing a story of a person who would try to get 40 fails in one month,
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: and he would keep track of all the times that he failed.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: But because he was willing to fail, he was able to overcome and become really successful.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And by I'm not saying that you purposely go out and sin and make bad decisions.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: What this means is that you are willing to step outside your comfort zone,
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: that you are willing to try to do what it is that the Lord is asking of you.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Even if that means that you are willing to make a mistake in the process of doing
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: the right thing.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: So what if you purposely failed?
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: What if your goal was to get as many failures as possible while trying to succeed?
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And so you're giving it what you can, yet at the same time acknowledging that, hey, I failed.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: That means I am trying.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And just shifting that perspective of what failure actually means.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: What if you let go of having a picture-perfect life?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: What if you embraced both the ups and the downs?
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: How would you learn and how would you grow?
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: How would you connect with others?
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: What if you moved forward not purposely making mistakes or sinning,
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: but doing what you can with the knowledge that you have?
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: And when those mistakes happen,
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Understanding that the Lord will help you to overcome the mistakes and to learn and
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: to grow from them.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Rather than getting stuck in that shame,
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: you embrace the acknowledgement,
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: the guilt, understanding, and then embrace the atonement of the Lord into your life.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Allow yourself to be free.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And we do that by first acknowledging the That what we did was a mistake, then get curious.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: And then remind yourself that it's not the end.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you have to give up.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you can't make things right again.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Or if it's something that you really can't go back and fix,
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: remember that the Lord loves you, even as you are.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: And He can help you, help heal you.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Those spaces that seem impossible to heal in those moments of grief and pain and loss.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: The Lord can help us to receive the strength and comfort that we need.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Instead of looking at our failures and mistakes as things
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: that never should have happened,
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: let us see them as ways that we can grow and that we can learn.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Help it to build empathy within ourselves for others as we learn
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: to embrace God's love into our lives,
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: healing those wounds that have been created,
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: and allowing us to move forward in that love.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: And I will see you next week on the Divine Worth Podcast.
