- 0:00Speaker 1: Getting ready for the draft. Adam Kaplan is in the
- 0:03Speaker 1: house from Inside the Birds and the Inside the Birds podcast,
- 0:06Speaker 1: which you can get on all podcasting platforms, and he
- 0:09Speaker 1: joins us. Now, as we talked yesterday, we're getting closer
- 0:13Speaker 1: and closer to this year's draft, Adam, How are you.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, no doubt. So, yeah, we're just over two
- 0:19Speaker 2: weeks away. And we did Eagles draft needs. We narrowed
- 0:22Speaker 2: them down and now it's time to do the rest
- 0:24Speaker 2: of the division. The Giants, the Commandos, and the Cowboys.
- 0:26Speaker 2: So what's interesting about that is some of them overlap
- 0:30Speaker 2: with what the Eagles need.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Let's look at how about Dallas first? All right, everybody
- 0:35Speaker 1: wants to know what's going on with the Cowboys here.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Let's look at some of their draft needs. Is they've
- 0:39Speaker 1: been very quiet this offseason in free agency. They lost
- 0:44Speaker 1: some pieces. So when we look at the Cowboys, where
- 0:48Speaker 1: the team that did not make the playoffs a year ago,
- 0:50Speaker 1: what do they need to try to build their way
- 0:53Speaker 1: back to the playoffs.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah. So remember they made the big trade to start
- 0:57Speaker 2: the season, Michael Parsons to Green Bay, not do much
- 1:01Speaker 2: to replace them. They did, ironically get Rashaan Gary from
- 1:05Speaker 2: these said Packers, but he's nowhere near the level of
- 1:07Speaker 2: Michael Parsons. But they're really light at that position. It's
- 1:10Speaker 2: Rashaan Gary, good football player. And then you've got Donvin
- 1:14Speaker 2: Azaraku who did well before he got hurt, but he
- 1:17Speaker 2: is He had hip laborm surgery. They're hopeful that he'll
- 1:21Speaker 2: be ready for the start of training camp. They don't
- 1:23Speaker 2: know that that's really it. They've got Sam Williams who
- 1:26Speaker 2: is a second rounder back four years ago, but he's
- 1:29Speaker 2: a backup. They need help there. That to me is
- 1:32Speaker 2: their number one need. Mike after that. It's it's not
- 1:36Speaker 2: that you have to take a linebacker early, but they're
- 1:38Speaker 2: really light there. They've had major problems that they're gonna remember.
- 1:41Speaker 2: They're going to run the Fango defense on a Christian Parker,
- 1:45Speaker 2: so they're going to start two inside backers. They don't
- 1:47Speaker 2: know who now is going to start for them, and
- 1:49Speaker 2: Marvin overshowm will be one of them if he's healthy.
- 1:51Speaker 2: He's had major knee problems and they're not sure it
- 1:54Speaker 2: opposite him, so that's a need. Cornerback is a need.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You might remember Shavn Ravels Carolina who had an ACL
- 2:01Speaker 2: injury late n his curates Carolina, who might have been
- 2:04Speaker 2: a late first early secon round pick. He was a
- 2:06Speaker 2: third rounder, so they're expecting him to start. They brought
- 2:10Speaker 2: Kobe durant In over from the Rams, but he's a
- 2:14Speaker 2: marginal starter. Kln Carson, who's a third corner John Bland
- 2:17Speaker 2: who was a nickel. They needed an upgrade there, Mike.
- 2:20Speaker 2: That's another problem for them as cornerback and also defensive tackle,
- 2:24Speaker 2: where they were loaded last season. Mike. They moved on
- 2:27Speaker 2: for two of them, added one of them with Kenny Clark.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Remember they traded o'deige Zua to the Niners, so they're
- 2:32Speaker 2: kind of light there behind Kenny Clark, who's a veteran
- 2:35Speaker 2: in Quinn Williams.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say a defensive tackle obviously
- 2:39Speaker 1: they targeted in that Parsons trade, but a spot that
- 2:43Speaker 1: they still need to update. Speaking of defensive tackle, we
- 2:46Speaker 1: go to the Giants. Their defensive tackle wants out Dexter Lawrence,
- 2:51Speaker 1: so we'll see if they end up trading him, possibly
- 2:54Speaker 1: on Draft night. But the Giants a team that obviously
- 2:57Speaker 1: has not made the playoffs in a couple of years. Now,
- 3:01Speaker 1: what are some of the things that John Harball's crew
- 3:03Speaker 1: needs to start looking at Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Look, the thing is they just need to get him
- 3:07Speaker 2: a new deal that commensurate with the numbers that are
- 3:10Speaker 2: that are going to be out there for the veteran tackles.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I don't get the feeling he wants to leave. What
- 3:15Speaker 2: you do is when when when the team you're playing
- 3:19Speaker 2: for is kind of stalling and getting sent and done
- 3:23Speaker 2: with you, All you could do is ask for a trade.
- 3:25Speaker 2: They hold your rights because you're under contract, so they
- 3:28Speaker 2: could do it that. Jihants could do whatever they want.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And it's not like they do have Darris Alexander. Darris
- 3:33Speaker 2: Alexander Mike was a third rounder, sort of a high
- 3:36Speaker 2: upside third round pick last year, but he's older. He
- 3:38Speaker 2: turns twenty six, turns twenty six later this year, so
- 3:42Speaker 2: he's a little bit older. They just don't have the depth.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So it's a need even if they keep Lawrence, which
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think is highly probable, not a lock, but more
- 3:50Speaker 2: probable than doubtful. But the biggest position to me is
- 3:54Speaker 2: guard for them on the offensive line, which by the way,
- 3:56Speaker 2: is that Eagles need for the future. They've had problems.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Guard John Runyon Junior is okay, coming over from Green
- 4:03Speaker 2: Bay and then they don't know yet who's going to
- 4:06Speaker 2: start at right guard that job. So but Evan Neil
- 4:07Speaker 2: has been a major disappointment. Can moved from right tackle
- 4:09Speaker 2: to guard. They brought him back on a one year deal.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He's been a bust as a right tackle. They need
- 4:14Speaker 2: that cornerback Mike. They just have not gotten the mileage.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Like Deontay Banks is a good kickoff returner, but he
- 4:22Speaker 2: got bench last season in a corner. They brought in
- 4:24Speaker 2: Greg newsom It, former first rounder for the Browns who
- 4:27Speaker 2: was traded the Jaguars. Jaguars didn't resign and he signed
- 4:30Speaker 2: for one year. So that's a position that the absolutely
- 4:32Speaker 2: need for the future. And then Rod receiver for the Giants.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Here's the issue the blik neighbors coming up with tour
- 4:39Speaker 2: An acl Dari Slayton. Okay, he's a lot for this
- 4:42Speaker 2: season because he's making a lot of money. Your three
- 4:45Speaker 2: of a three year deal is twenty seven. There's no
- 4:47Speaker 2: guaranteed money left. They couldn't move on from him. Darnelle
- 4:50Speaker 2: Mooney on a one year deal, Kevin Austin on a
- 4:53Speaker 2: one year deal. So yeah, they need help for the
- 4:55Speaker 2: future at wide receiver, so they have some needs. And
- 4:58Speaker 2: the Giants, Mike, as I I told you when we
- 5:01Speaker 2: did the over runner totals, I like the over. I
- 5:04Speaker 2: like the over At six and a half, they're going
- 5:05Speaker 2: to be an eight or nine win team just because
- 5:07Speaker 2: John Harball is a much better coach. Unfortunately for Brian
- 5:09Speaker 2: Dable he is all.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Right, Uh yeah, they're interesting. This offseason Draft Knight should
- 5:14Speaker 1: be fun for the Giants with the new regime over there.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And then of course there is Washington, a year removed
- 5:21Speaker 1: now from going to the NFC Championship game. They went
- 5:25Speaker 1: with a lot of veteran players, including Deebo Samuel. That
- 5:28Speaker 1: didn't really work out for them. So what does Washington
- 5:33Speaker 1: need to do to try to get themselves back in
- 5:35Speaker 1: the NFC hierarchy.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, well, though for the Giants, they already started their
- 5:39Speaker 2: offseason program because they the coaching staffs could start today,
- 5:42Speaker 2: so they started. John Harbaugh just got their transcript. I
- 5:45Speaker 2: mean it's amazing how quickly these guys could start. So
- 5:47Speaker 2: they get an advantage of working with these guys for
- 5:50Speaker 2: the draft. Now let's get to Washington. Well, Deebo, they
- 5:53Speaker 2: an't decided what he was just Okay, I mean he's
- 5:56Speaker 2: But the thing is Mike he's really a reduced receiver.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's really not a turead side receiver. He's a free agent.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Other than Terry McLaurin, they don't have a starter. Treylon
- 6:06Speaker 2: Burks did a nice job. He played with a broken finger.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He'll be a backup Ben Jefferson. My remember his dad,
- 6:11Speaker 2: Sewan is a longtime receivers coach. Jammy Brown is back
- 6:15Speaker 2: from a one year, ten million deal with the Jaguars.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Didn't work out. He got hurt. Christian McCaffrey's younger brother,
- 6:20Speaker 2: Luke McCaffrey's a backup. They need to start on the
- 6:22Speaker 2: opposite McLaurin. They won't name need someone with size, by
- 6:25Speaker 2: the way, at that position. Now guard, what they need
- 6:29Speaker 2: is a left guard. Sam Cosby is the right guard.
- 6:31Speaker 2: They're great at tackle. Connery, who moved from left tackle
- 6:34Speaker 2: at Argon to right tackle last year, did a great
- 6:36Speaker 2: job like Lanne Johnson did by the way with the Eagles,
- 6:39Speaker 2: and Laramie Tunzell got his contract extension. He's great. Center
- 6:44Speaker 2: is something they could they could certainly take a look at,
- 6:45Speaker 2: and sure they will, but left guard to me is
- 6:48Speaker 2: open and center you could add that to the list.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Left guard and center are two openings of the interior
- 6:53Speaker 2: the watching offensive line that needs to be filled. Running
- 6:56Speaker 2: Back for the future, Jakrosskey Merritt Crosskey Merit excuse me,
- 7:01Speaker 2: is really not a starter. He's a change up. They've
- 7:03Speaker 2: got for shod White, who I've always liked, not explosive
- 7:06Speaker 2: Crosskey Merrit's got explosiveness, and Jerome Ford could help them
- 7:10Speaker 2: on third down. They just need a starter of the
- 7:13Speaker 2: future cornerback. Remember they cut Marshaun Lattimore Mike. That didn't
- 7:16Speaker 2: work out. Trey Amos got hurt. He played well until
- 7:19Speaker 2: before he got hurt. Mike Sanemer still Mike. They have
- 7:22Speaker 2: to decide where they're going to line him up most like,
- 7:24Speaker 2: you'll be corner, not nickel, where it's questionable if he's
- 7:28Speaker 2: that good to be a starting corner. And then edge.
- 7:31Speaker 2: They're good for this season. They added a lot of pieces,
- 7:34Speaker 2: but they're not going to pass the season. But I'll
- 7:36Speaker 2: say this about Washington Mike. They were very, very aggressive
- 7:39Speaker 2: and free agency, and they needed to be. They had
- 7:41Speaker 2: the oldest roster in the National Football League last season.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan football at four from the inside of the
- 7:46Speaker 1: Birds podcast real quick, as we take a look at
- 7:49Speaker 1: these teams. The Giants have the fifth pick in the draft,
- 7:52Speaker 1: so they have Of the three teams that we just
- 7:54Speaker 1: talked about, they have the highest pick there. Washington picked seven,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and then of course you got Philadelphia at twenty three.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Dallas is at twelve. So Dallas, New York, and Washington
- 8:07Speaker 1: they're all in the top fifteen here, so they all
- 8:09Speaker 1: have a chance to really make a splash on draft night.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so let the Giants to me, guard is way
- 8:17Speaker 2: too early. Cornerback has got to be in play. Well,
- 8:21Speaker 2: it's a little bit early, but they could trade back
- 8:23Speaker 2: if they're going to wib Receiro will be a little
- 8:26Speaker 2: bit aggressive because right now they're good for the season.
- 8:29Speaker 2: You have to remember the drafts about the future. You
- 8:31Speaker 2: gotta you gotta be patient. If you're a Giant fan.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I know in your area they're some Giants fans, so
- 8:36Speaker 2: they have a lot of needs. Now. Detackle is one.
- 8:40Speaker 2: We'll talk more about this doing draft week. That's one
- 8:43Speaker 2: that could look at later. Dallas. Edges got to be
- 8:46Speaker 2: in play, there's no question about it, and there will
- 8:48Speaker 2: be some measures they can look at. Washington. To me,
- 8:52Speaker 2: you gotta look at wide receiver. They need to help
- 8:54Speaker 2: their quarterback and when you have a franchise quarterback Jackson
- 8:58Speaker 2: Dark for the Giants, and then Washington a special because
- 9:01Speaker 2: their past target group is not very good. They had
- 9:04Speaker 2: a chick at Konkuo, which is they gave him almost
- 9:06Speaker 2: two years fully guaranteed nuvers three years. Do you I
- 9:08Speaker 2: thought that was a little bit too rich for me.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They need help at wide receiver, as I mentioned, and
- 9:13Speaker 2: they need to more juice an offense. But I know
- 9:16Speaker 2: that they were very aggressive for free agent six, so
- 9:18Speaker 2: they know they needed to be and again they got
- 9:20Speaker 2: much younger. You never want to be the oldest team
- 9:22Speaker 2: in the National Foota League, which the Camanos were.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Last season, and they did not make the playoffs as
- 9:27Speaker 1: the oldest team in the NFL. They did go to
- 9:29Speaker 1: the NFC championship game the year before that. We'll see
- 9:32Speaker 1: if they can get back. Giants, as we just talked about,
- 9:35Speaker 1: very interesting now that they have a new regime there.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And then of course, as we talked about at the
- 9:39Speaker 1: front there Dallas who did not make the playoffs, but
- 9:42Speaker 1: a lot of people like their offense Adam, So we'll
- 9:45Speaker 1: see if they focus on trying to beef up that
- 9:47Speaker 1: defense that you know last year they traded Parsons and
- 9:50Speaker 1: was kind of in limbo and now have a new
- 9:52Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. They try to get Christian Parker a couple
- 9:55Speaker 1: of guys to work with over there. That will kind
- 9:57Speaker 1: of be a fun story to watch on Draft night Philadelphia,
- 10:00Speaker 1: of course, pick number twenty three. You can listen to
- 10:02Speaker 1: the draft on April twenty third, right here on ninety
- 10:06Speaker 1: seven to three ESPN. I'm looking forward to all the
- 10:09Speaker 1: stuff now because you guys, as we just said, three
- 10:12Speaker 1: NFC East teams in the top fifteen in the draft
- 10:14Speaker 1: will make for a very interesting night.
- 10:16Speaker 2: You know what's amazing You mentioned this in passing and
- 10:18Speaker 2: I'll give a little more context. Actually on Dallas, their
- 10:22Speaker 2: entire starting unit is back. That like rarely happens. Now.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I know the Eagles will see about AJ Brown, but
- 10:28Speaker 2: it's rare for one player not to leave from your offense.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Pickings is back on the tag. I mean, their offensive
- 10:34Speaker 2: line is back. They resigned Javonte Williams. Jake Ferguson is
- 10:38Speaker 2: well back. He's on an extension, So yeah, you're right, Mike.
- 10:42Speaker 2: For the Cowboys, their defense has been terrible for a
- 10:44Speaker 2: number of years, and yet they have another new coordinator.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It's Christian Parker, and it's going to be interesting to
- 10:52Speaker 2: see he's completely changing it. But they were playing a
- 10:54Speaker 2: forty three front. They're now going to play thirty four
- 10:56Speaker 2: or five too. It's going to be interesting, all right.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Draft of course, right here on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 11:01Speaker 1: More on Football at four with the guys all week
- 11:04Speaker 1: long here, don't forget check out the Inside of the
- 11:06Speaker 1: Birds podcast on all podcasting platforms. Thanks Adam, thank you.
