- 0:00There's sugar on the floor. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #1162 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Tavares Brown. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:19book, The Most Powerful Story in the World by going to from

- 0:26and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:27www.fromchad.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:32You think you have a personal problem, but upgraded thinking
- 0:34knows you almost always have a reward problem.
- 0:37Here's the story. You get more of whatever you
- 0:41reward. This is true personally.
- 0:44This is true as a manager or team leader.
- 0:46This applies to parenting. Incentives are the biggest
- 0:50driver of behavior. If you wonder why you act the
- 0:52way you do, look at the rewards you give yourself.
- 0:55Where do your desires get satisfied?
- 0:58Your desire for recognition, comfort, or control?
- 1:01If you have sugar on the floor, you're going to have ants.
- 1:04If you give yourself or those around you a certain reward,
- 1:07you're going to get the behavior that leads to that reward.
- 1:11Larry Ellison Co founded the software giant Oracle in 1977.
- 1:15At 82 years old, he still leads the company.
- 1:18He tells a story about how he got incentives wrong.
- 1:21At one point in Oracle, he paid salespeople a bigger Commission
- 1:25when a deal ran through an outside vendor than when they
- 1:27closed it directly. So $1,000,000 deal sold direct
- 1:31earned the reps 100,000. The same million routed through
- 1:34a partner earned him 120 and handed the A cut to the partner.
- 1:39So Oracle walked away with far less.
- 1:42So guess what the reps did? They ran everything through
- 1:44partners. The sales people were happy.
- 1:46The partners were happy. The only one bleeding was
- 1:49Oracle. Were the reps crooks?
- 1:51No, they were ants. They walked straight to the
- 1:55sugar somebody poured on the floor.
- 1:57The system was set up for that behavior.
- 1:59The reps were just acting rationally within that system.
- 2:03Now turn it on yourself. You keep failing at the thing
- 2:06you swore you do, and the story you tell yourself is what's
- 2:10wrong with me? Why am I so weak, so lazy, so
- 2:12undisciplined? This is like yelling at ants
- 2:15that have infested your kitchen when you have a bunch of sugar
- 2:18on the floor. The ants are just doing what
- 2:20they're wired to do. They aren't the problem.
- 2:23The most important question to ask yourself is what am I
- 2:27actually rewarding? If you want to finish the
- 2:30project, don't let yourself open that app until you work on it.
- 2:33If you want to get fit, once you hit 10,000 steps then you reward
- 2:37yourself with the snack. If you need the team to be on
- 2:41time, reward them for it. You say you want to write, but
- 2:45the second you sit down, you reward yourself with your phone.
- 2:48You say you want to get out of debt, but every hard day ends
- 2:51with the thing that feels good. Tonight you're not broken.
- 2:55You're doing what every living thing does.
- 2:57You're walking to the sugar. So quit sweeping ants.
- 3:02Find the sugar and move it. Put the reward on the behavior
- 3:06you actually want and watch how fast you March toward it.
- 3:09The better story to tell yourself is don't blame the
- 3:12ants. Find the sugar you get more of
- 3:16whatever your reward. Tell me a story of a reward
- 3:20pointed the wrong direction to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:24Send someone a text and ask them what's one thing you keep
- 3:27rewarding by accident.
