- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:03Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised.
- 0:08Speaker 2: The world's a big poks.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:18Speaker 3: People were taking it as well. That's a sign of
- 0:21Speaker 3: the dysfunction or whatever, and you're.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Taking it too far.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I heard those exact words. Then that's that's taking one
- 0:25Speaker 2: of your shows, taking too far.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Well, none of my shows are on in the morning,
- 0:28Speaker 3: so I.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Oh, mack round with Bill O'Brien right now, as Mac does,
- 0:33Speaker 2: is scratching back ground too, Mac mac Jones, Oh, Mac Brown.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I always used to tell my kid, when you're at
- 0:40Speaker 2: those showcase tournaments, always worth something colorful.
- 0:43Speaker 4: So it's a great scouts getting the next level recruiting
- 0:47Speaker 4: called that peacocking, you know, yeah.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Show up.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 3: We used to make fun of kids in high school,
- 0:52Speaker 3: like a kid would show up with his name on
- 0:54Speaker 3: his back loser, loser. I think it happened on the
- 0:57Speaker 3: play that Kyle Dugger picked off the pass from Matt.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Come on, Kyle, you know what we're doing, you know, like, yeah, what.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Are we doing?
- 1:04Speaker 5: Kyle?
- 1:05Speaker 4: Kyle? Come on?
- 1:06Speaker 6: Half half the vond Diggs not at mandatory Mini camp.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Function very disappointed as usual with how the local media
- 1:15Speaker 2: is covering this team.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Then when they do watch they say things like, you know,
- 1:18Speaker 3: some of the interceptions may have been intentional.
- 1:21Speaker 4: So so you sort of said, stick to attendance. True story,
- 1:26Speaker 4: true story.
- 1:27Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered, fueled by donkeys, evil laugh.
- 1:32Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, coming in hot here.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Uh it is Thursday here at Jillette Stadium. Mini camp
- 1:41Speaker 2: is over, paintball is over, OTAs are over. We are
- 1:46Speaker 2: now officially in the dog days of the NFL, waiting
- 1:50Speaker 2: for training camp to start. But but supposedly, reportedly, allegedly,
- 1:58Speaker 2: there's a certain person still visiting here.
- 2:01Speaker 4: In the building.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I don't have any evidence of that. I have not
- 2:04Speaker 2: seen anybody.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Or but they told Evan to get out of the
- 2:07Speaker 4: bushes this morning, what are you doing? And they did. Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 6: I had a dream a little the reason why he
- 2:12Speaker 6: didn't sign here.
- 2:13Speaker 4: So you had a dream that you were the reason
- 2:16Speaker 4: he didn't sign Yep, he woke up in a.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Sweat essay, So who knows, Maybe some news will come
- 2:22Speaker 2: out the next day or so, but you know.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Or he might wait till training care Wait, do you think,
- 2:30Speaker 4: do you think that we will get any kind of news.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Or one way or the other.
- 2:35Speaker 3: You mean or well, I mean, obviously if he signs,
- 2:37Speaker 3: we're going to find that out.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Well, I think, I think, I know, I think if
- 2:40Speaker 2: I'm his agent, I just want to wait a little
- 2:42Speaker 2: bit longer to see if anyone comes in.
- 2:45Speaker 3: That makes sense, And I know Ian Rappaport sort of
- 2:49Speaker 3: opined that yesterday. I think that all made sense. But
- 2:52Speaker 3: do you think if obviously, if he signs, we're going
- 2:55Speaker 3: to find out that he signed, someone's gonna not someone's
- 2:57Speaker 3: gonna report that. But if he doesn't sign, do you
- 2:59Speaker 3: think we'll get any of updates saying it's a great visit,
- 3:02Speaker 3: great like Tennessee.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Great fits two days Tennessee for two days, great visit.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Everything went great, Everything is awesome.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Isn't this great?
- 3:10Speaker 4: We'll see, but you're going to continue to talk. Didn't
- 3:15Speaker 4: walk in and just drop the bag and say we
- 3:17Speaker 4: need you to come now.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It didn't evolve into an argument, and so everything was great,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, right, he.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Just came to like Rea hash old wounds with Bill O'Brien.
- 3:27Speaker 4: I'm not here for a visit. I just got to
- 3:29Speaker 4: talk to you about I.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Just had one other thing to say to you.
- 3:34Speaker 6: So, but like, if you're the Patriots, you're not waiting.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Here's what you want here. We want you here, Like
- 3:43Speaker 6: what are we doing?
- 3:44Speaker 2: You know? It's funny. As I'm driving in today, I'm
- 3:46Speaker 2: thinking of what I'm telling d Hop if I'm Matt
- 3:50Speaker 2: grow or whoever.
- 3:51Speaker 4: He's dreaming about it.
- 3:55Speaker 2: We really want you here, and we want you here
- 3:58Speaker 2: as soon as possible so we can get you the
- 4:00Speaker 2: playbooks and blug get you, you know, so that when
- 4:02Speaker 2: training camps comes, you're ready to go, because we obviously
- 4:07Speaker 2: we look at you as an integral part of our program,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know. And I come on heavy and I hit
- 4:14Speaker 2: them with a you know, I don't short change the
- 4:17Speaker 2: first offer. I come in with an Odell Beckham like
- 4:21Speaker 2: offer right off the bat, and let's go, let's go.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Let's not.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I just want to reprise.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You want to give him fifteen million?
- 4:28Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 4:29Speaker 6: Yeah, there's some mixed reports about this, but there are
- 4:32Speaker 6: some reports out there that they have already talked at
- 4:36Speaker 6: least ballpark figures on a contract. Otherwise you wouldn't be
- 4:40Speaker 6: here right now. I think is sort of the indication.
- 4:42Speaker 6: So they they've shown the Patriots have shown some significant
- 4:46Speaker 6: interest in him, not just on oh why don't you
- 4:48Speaker 6: come in, We'll see what it's like, but legitimate interest
- 4:52Speaker 6: in terms of contract as well. So I think there
- 4:55Speaker 6: is a little bit of a push here.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I just wonder what gets it done for Hawkins, because
- 4:58Speaker 4: are you telling me that come the second week of
- 5:01Speaker 4: August the Patriots might not up their offer. When they
- 5:03Speaker 4: get here and they see what they got and they
- 5:05Speaker 4: really like, like I see more of a chance of that,
- 5:07Speaker 4: then he's gonna come in there. You know what, We're good.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Thornton's popping were Juju's healthy, Like, we're good.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think if everything's even as between us and the Titans,
- 5:15Speaker 2: I think he comes here. But my fear is that
- 5:17Speaker 2: a contender, a true contender right now, like Kansas City
- 5:21Speaker 2: come in and swoop in and just take them away.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, it seems like Diggs is back on the
- 5:26Speaker 4: track with everything, But that's you know, another one. If
- 5:29Speaker 4: that blew up into something else, maybe they get into it.
- 5:33Speaker 4: That was weird, that whole story, and we won't have
- 5:35Speaker 4: to go back into our.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Bills weekly like he was there.
- 5:39Speaker 4: That was weird.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Like I think he took exception to the fact that
- 5:42Speaker 3: people said that he sort of skipped OTAs when he
- 5:45Speaker 3: was there. He just didn't practice. But whatever, It's not
- 5:49Speaker 3: a great situation. I don't feel if I'm a Bills fan,
- 5:52Speaker 3: I don't feel really all that much better about it.
- 5:54Speaker 4: The next day that he prays better, but not that
- 5:56Speaker 4: much better. Howard, thing's gonna go when it goes back
- 5:58Speaker 4: in the season they lose a game issues.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Somebody wrote in criticizing me for like wishing ill on
- 6:06Speaker 2: an opponent rather than wanting us to get better. Why
- 6:09Speaker 2: can't do both?
- 6:10Speaker 4: That was the That was the callers, everybody that was
- 6:14Speaker 4: writing in and telling you about now the Patriots are
- 6:16Speaker 4: going to surprise everybody because Buffalo is going to fall apart.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers can't play, and two was going to get
- 6:21Speaker 4: it out.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But this, this person specifically said they were disappointed in me. Listen,
- 6:26Speaker 2: I will hill on my opponents and I hope we
- 6:29Speaker 2: get better. Why can't Why can't both? I'm not hoping
- 6:35Speaker 2: just because they falter that will, you know? Get up there?
- 6:39Speaker 2: I want both. I want us to be good and
- 6:41Speaker 2: I want everybody to suck.
- 6:43Speaker 3: See, I want my team to be better than everybody else.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I want everybody to be great, but but I want
- 6:48Speaker 3: my team to be just that much greater.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Listen, I don't care. You know, this is something It's
- 6:53Speaker 2: the whole debate I have with Andy. It's like when
- 6:56Speaker 2: I watched the Patriots game, I want to blow out
- 6:58Speaker 2: every time. When I watch you all the other games,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I want entertainment in a close game and overtime, but
- 7:03Speaker 2: I want to blow out every opponent we play. I'm
- 7:06Speaker 2: not looking for, you know, a heart attack when the
- 7:09Speaker 2: Patriots play.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And I'd be fine. I mean, I'd rather have a
- 7:11Speaker 3: close game, but I'd be fine with blowing every opponent
- 7:14Speaker 3: out if they were at full strength.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I have.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I have no interest in the fifty six to twelve
- 7:19Speaker 3: games over the Jets when like Bryce Petty's playing.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Listen, if we blow out every opponent some of those games,
- 7:24Speaker 2: the other team is going to be at full strength,
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know. So like, I don't care. I want to
- 7:29Speaker 2: freaking win, and I want to win big, and I
- 7:31Speaker 2: want to dominate pillage and I wanted you know, I you.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Know this guy, like, wasn't that like when you're beaten?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Like the Chargers in Week two, Chargers were like the
- 7:42Speaker 3: best team in football the year before like that. To me,
- 7:46Speaker 3: I'm sorry, that means a lot more to me than
- 7:48Speaker 3: beating up on the Jags. You know, you know, you know.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It means a lot to me. Is the ring at
- 7:52Speaker 2: the end of the season.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I know they didn't get the ring. Whatever. I still
- 7:55Speaker 3: enjoyed that season, sure, you know, and I know, like
- 7:58Speaker 3: another reference to the Scott Pioli podcast that Matt and
- 8:01Speaker 3: I did for Pats from the Past, he said, it
- 8:03Speaker 3: was a slug like it was a really difficult season
- 8:06Speaker 3: to go through because of the mounting pressure. They felt
- 8:09Speaker 3: like they really didn't enjoy a lot of the success
- 8:12Speaker 3: the way they should have because it just kept mounting
- 8:15Speaker 3: and mounting. They didn't they didn't get the pleasure out
- 8:17Speaker 3: of that season. I did. I mean I got I
- 8:20Speaker 3: I mean beating beating some of the teams that they
- 8:23Speaker 3: played that year. Yeah, they had some bad teams that
- 8:25Speaker 3: they beat up on too, like they always had in
- 8:27Speaker 3: the AFC East. But they they took some really good
- 8:30Speaker 3: teams and took them.
- 8:31Speaker 2: To I loved it. I mean it was on this show.
- 8:34Speaker 2: We're doing the show and we're looking at ESPN, and
- 8:36Speaker 2: all of a sudden we realized that part of their
- 8:39Speaker 2: little tabs in the bottom. The Patriots had their own
- 8:42Speaker 2: tab and I'm like, f yes, I don't care what
- 8:46Speaker 2: anyone thinks about that. I'm all for it. I'm all
- 8:49Speaker 2: for it.
- 8:50Speaker 8: You know.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that was. That was a crazy season. I thought,
- 8:53Speaker 4: it's just an interesting for me. I talked to you know,
- 8:54Speaker 4: Bruski a couple of weeks ago for the for the project.
- 8:57Speaker 4: He was, you know, I think some people myself included,
- 8:59Speaker 4: to say, oh, to the seven, they could have they
- 9:01Speaker 4: should have lost one. If they had lost one, it
- 9:02Speaker 4: would have reset. It was like nope, He's like, you
- 9:06Speaker 4: play every game to win. We didn't need a loss.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You know, They're so interesting. But that season is Yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 4: that was that was nuts. I mean for multiple reasons.
- 9:14Speaker 2: All Right, So we're coming off mini camp. Everything's all
- 9:19Speaker 2: the Hayes in the barn in terms of the off season.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You know, what do we think? Do we? I mean,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I I find hope. I find hope on both sides
- 9:28Speaker 2: of the ball here. I think our defense, like I said,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I'm saying right now, one of my preseason predictions top
- 9:36Speaker 2: five defense in the NFL by whatever you know, the
- 9:40Speaker 2: standard KPI s are top five defense in I have
- 9:44Speaker 2: hoped that this offense is gonna look like an NFL
- 9:47Speaker 2: offense and if they signed D hop that hope will
- 9:50Speaker 2: turn into expectations.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Asking for the question, what was the standard?
- 9:58Speaker 2: What's KP? Yeah, Key Performance indexes technical? Do you know
- 10:04Speaker 2: what that is?
- 10:05Speaker 6: No, that's a that's a boss term.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'll bracket key performance index you know whatever they are.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Absolutely, I'll jump in on the defense because I jump
- 10:18Speaker 4: in on the I feel good. I feel good, I
- 10:20Speaker 4: feel you know.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Come on, come on, I'm not letting you off the
- 10:22Speaker 6: hook right now.
- 10:23Speaker 4: We'll say that later.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Starting on the defense. Leave this and that's not fair.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Then did you want to say something? No, I don't
- 10:33Speaker 4: want to say something. I want to find out. I'll
- 10:36Speaker 4: start on the offense. I just I got the he
- 10:38Speaker 4: B g b's watching the offense practice, and I mean,
- 10:40Speaker 4: I think a lot of it might be due to
- 10:42Speaker 4: Kendrick Bourne and DeVante Parker were out there and those
- 10:45Speaker 4: are the two key guys, and and we know what
- 10:47Speaker 4: they have. You know, I said it on the shows.
- 10:50Speaker 4: It kind of bugged me with Kendrick Bourne being like, oh,
- 10:52Speaker 4: I admit I didn't have a bad years, like everybody
- 10:53Speaker 4: had a bad year last year. What does he do
- 10:55Speaker 4: the next day pass off his hands grabbed by Miles Bryant.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:58Speaker 4: So, I know the a some people out there saying
- 11:01Speaker 4: that the offense kind of looked like twenty twenty two,
- 11:03Speaker 4: and I don't want to quite go that far, but
- 11:06Speaker 4: I just I gotta be honest with what they had
- 11:08Speaker 4: with j justs Kasiki and just Bill O'Brien. Do they
- 11:10Speaker 4: maybe be, like, to your point, a functional NFL offense, Yeah, maybe,
- 11:14Speaker 4: but not a lot move might needle with those practices.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And I know it's OTA's and you know, grain to
- 11:20Speaker 4: salt all that kind of stuff, but you know it's
- 11:22Speaker 4: a lot of the same pieces, and throw in some
- 11:24Speaker 4: offensive line questions. How about some offensive tackle questions to
- 11:27Speaker 4: go with those questions at receivers. So I think they
- 11:29Speaker 4: desperately need Taekwon Thornton and Juju Smith Schuster back. I
- 11:33Speaker 4: think we need Taekwon Thornton to be a player. He
- 11:35Speaker 4: can't just kind of be an okay guy like he
- 11:37Speaker 4: needs to be able to play and Thornton had and sorry,
- 11:40Speaker 4: and Smith Schuster has to be everything that Jacobe Myers was.
- 11:43Speaker 4: And you know, the absence of those guys, I'm not
- 11:46Speaker 4: gonna miss Nelson aguilor but Nelson Aguiler is a guy
- 11:48Speaker 4: and training in OTAs that would make a couple downfield
- 11:50Speaker 4: catches that at least for a minute, made you fool think,
- 11:53Speaker 4: oh hey maybe we have something here. But Kasiki certainly
- 11:56Speaker 4: some encouragement there. But Devonte Parker same kind of story.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Contested catches, that's what it is. We know what he is,
- 12:02Speaker 4: and bourne Is continues to be kind of what he was.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Talks a lot, doesn't really produce on the field, has
- 12:08Speaker 4: some inconsistency, So I go, I feel a little bit
- 12:11Speaker 4: not so great about the offense at this point. I
- 12:13Speaker 4: need to see some other guys back out there, and
- 12:15Speaker 4: I think that they should. They should Fred put the
- 12:18Speaker 4: bag on the table for DeAndre Hopkins because I just
- 12:22Speaker 4: I don't I really don't know with putting this much
- 12:24Speaker 4: on Thornton, it's miss Smith Schuster that they're ready to
- 12:27Speaker 4: be those guys that can make a difference.
- 12:29Speaker 6: In my mind, Yeah, I think the whole off season
- 12:32Speaker 6: program basically just confirmed everything that I thought, which I
- 12:36Speaker 6: guess in some ways is a positive because the offense
- 12:39Speaker 6: to me does look functional. There is a road map
- 12:42Speaker 6: of what I can see schematically where they're headed under
- 12:46Speaker 6: Bill O'Brien that I like, and I think that they're
- 12:48Speaker 6: coming together in terms of just the overall execution and
- 12:52Speaker 6: functionality of the offense. But at the same time, that
- 12:56Speaker 6: high end talent, that ceiling is still a big time
- 13:00Speaker 6: question mark. Like Okay, so you're you're coaching is a floor, right,
- 13:03Speaker 6: Like you know you're gonna be competent, but how are
- 13:06Speaker 6: you going to get into the point where when you
- 13:10Speaker 6: go and play Dallas and it's thirty five twenty eight?
- 13:13Speaker 6: Can you get to thirty five points? Can you outscore
- 13:17Speaker 6: somebody every once in a while? Like where is that
- 13:19Speaker 6: coming from? And right now it's the known commodities or
- 13:23Speaker 6: our Juju Gazsicky Henry, Like, we know what those guys are,
- 13:26Speaker 6: so they're not gonna come in and blow you away.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Juju.
- 13:30Speaker 6: I don't think is going to be the fourteen hundred
- 13:32Speaker 6: yard guy he was in nineteen for the Steelers, for example,
- 13:35Speaker 6: He's gonna be eight hundred, nine hundred yards. You know,
- 13:38Speaker 6: eighty five catches good but not not spectacular. So who's
- 13:42Speaker 6: going to be spectacular in this group? And it really
- 13:45Speaker 6: comes down to Taekwon, which is putting a ton on
- 13:49Speaker 6: him or Mac, Mac elevating the rest of it.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. It all comes down to Mac,
- 13:55Speaker 2: because any of those guys aren't spectacular unless Mac is,
- 14:00Speaker 2: you know, bottom line good and hopefully better than good.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You know, he's got to help them become spectacular. And
- 14:07Speaker 2: if he's not playing well, it all falls apart. Ye,
- 14:10Speaker 2: it all falls apart.
- 14:11Speaker 3: I would agree, and I would agree with a lot
- 14:13Speaker 3: of the comments that both of the boys just said.
- 14:16Speaker 3: And I'm not as concerned yet. I'm not saying that
- 14:21Speaker 3: I am, you know, and I think what Mike is
- 14:23Speaker 3: sort of alluding to, and he's way more diplomatic than
- 14:28Speaker 3: I am. So the reaction in the last couple of
- 14:31Speaker 3: days to the performance of the offense and Mac specifically
- 14:35Speaker 3: to me, I'm often left looking around at Mike and
- 14:39Speaker 3: Evans saying, did we watch the same stuff now? I
- 14:42Speaker 3: don't think there was anything wrong with Mac. I don't
- 14:45Speaker 3: think he had any bad days, nothing, nothing at all
- 14:48Speaker 3: like training camp last year. But at the same time,
- 14:52Speaker 3: I didn't see anything that.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Would be like.
- 14:56Speaker 3: He really looks refreshed. I mean, he's he's slinging it all.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Over the yard.
- 15:00Speaker 3: No, I think they're working through some stuff. I like
- 15:03Speaker 3: the way Evan talked about you can understand when you're
- 15:06Speaker 3: watching them what they're doing. There's a plan. I think
- 15:10Speaker 3: you can see what they clearly want to incorporate. The
- 15:14Speaker 3: two tight ends. Kausiki I think is going to be
- 15:16Speaker 3: a big part of the offense in my opinion. So far,
- 15:19Speaker 3: what I've seen major upgrade. Now I would have sat
- 15:23Speaker 3: that two years ago about Jonah Smith too. I thought
- 15:25Speaker 3: he was going to be a big part of that offense.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Never materialized. I think Kasiki looks better than that looked
- 15:31Speaker 3: two years ago on the practice field. So there's some
- 15:34Speaker 3: things that I think are encouraging. And the reason why
- 15:37Speaker 3: maybe I'm not as down on it, Mike as you are.
- 15:39Speaker 3: And this kind of strange role reverse in highly and
- 15:42Speaker 3: is what you started off with with born In Parker.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I think they'll be two parts of the offense. But
- 15:49Speaker 3: I also think Thornton and Smith Schuster will be big
- 15:51Speaker 3: parts of the offense too, and we didn't really get
- 15:53Speaker 3: to see much of those. I'm concerned about that, fair,
- 15:56Speaker 3: very fair. I'm concerned about Smith Schuster in particular because
- 16:00Speaker 3: by all accounts, there's nothing new that's happened. He had
- 16:03Speaker 3: a knee injury that that bothered him down the stretch.
- 16:05Speaker 3: He had to be managed, reaggravated, I believe in the
- 16:09Speaker 3: AFC Championship Game, and then was sort of in and
- 16:13Speaker 3: out in the Super Bowl. And now what are we five,
- 16:16Speaker 3: six six months later and he can't get on the
- 16:20Speaker 3: field for a practice. Now that could be as simple
- 16:22Speaker 3: as it's the spring, it's mini camp. Why, you know,
- 16:25Speaker 3: why do we have to have him out there?
- 16:27Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 16:28Speaker 3: It's a guy who talked about six weeks ago about
- 16:30Speaker 3: how difficult this offense was to learn. I think he
- 16:33Speaker 3: would stand to improve by that. Yes, so I am.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I do have my concerns. I mean, I'm just not
- 16:38Speaker 3: as I'm not worried about the whole thing yet, because
- 16:41Speaker 3: I do see a couple. Maybe it's my background with
- 16:44Speaker 3: Billy Oh and how much I really like him, I
- 16:46Speaker 3: have faith in him, and I see it. I see
- 16:49Speaker 3: I've seen a difference. Like I said earlier, the spring
- 16:52Speaker 3: practices last year weren't a disaster, but I watched what
- 16:55Speaker 3: they were doing with the downhill stuff, the downfield stuff,
- 16:58Speaker 3: and I didn't think it was sustainable. What I saw this,
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know, during these camps when the offense was was
- 17:04Speaker 3: playing reasonably well. I do think is sustained.
- 17:06Speaker 2: I mean, Monday was better than Tuesday, there's no doubt. Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 2: you know, but listen, I thought Mac looked look good.
- 17:12Speaker 3: They were both rough though in both days of Mini Camp.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Now I didn't think that the other three days that
- 17:17Speaker 3: we watched I didn't think were rough. But it looked
- 17:20Speaker 3: like they did more defensively in Mini camp than they
- 17:22Speaker 3: did in the OTAs in terms of pressure and stuff
- 17:25Speaker 3: like that.
- 17:25Speaker 4: And that stuff to me, like, you know, I'm just
- 17:28Speaker 4: a little torn on it. I mean, maybe you can
- 17:30Speaker 4: speak to it, but you're throwing the kitchen sink at
- 17:33Speaker 4: people in Mini camp like yeah, like.
- 17:35Speaker 6: I didn't love it.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I mean, I get it.
- 17:37Speaker 4: But it's also like I think everybody's trying to learn
- 17:40Speaker 4: right now, and you know, you're already jumping into like
- 17:43Speaker 4: you're in week six and you're trying to, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 4: fake out Peyton Manning Like, I don't know, I just
- 17:48Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm not I guess I'm having trouble
- 17:50Speaker 4: verbalizing why that kind of bugs me a little bit.
- 17:53Speaker 4: It just it feels like it gives somewhat of a
- 17:55Speaker 4: false impression of the defense because they're like they're scheming
- 17:58Speaker 4: things up, and what do we always hear in like
- 17:59Speaker 4: train camp and stuff with like nobody's scheming. They're just
- 18:02Speaker 4: playing straightforward stuff. We're all just trying to learn. So, yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 4: the defense looks good right now, but I mean they're
- 18:08Speaker 4: in the lab right now in mini camps, so I
- 18:10Speaker 4: don't know. It's just that it rust me a little
- 18:11Speaker 4: bit the wrong way, and I just wonder if and
- 18:13Speaker 4: I believe me, I'm high on the defense. I think
- 18:15Speaker 4: they've got some great pieces.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And I got to tell you, your negativity is refreshing.
- 18:18Speaker 6: No, I actually thought it. So Bill was asked about it.
- 18:22Speaker 6: I think Phil Perry asked him about that very thing.
- 18:25Speaker 6: It seems like you guys are are dialing it up
- 18:28Speaker 6: pretty good defensively, and how does that how do you
- 18:32Speaker 6: do that behind the scenes, Like what's the communication like?
- 18:34Speaker 6: And he said, yeah, that we sit down and we
- 18:37Speaker 6: don't throw things at the offense and vice versa. That
- 18:40Speaker 6: we haven't talked about. So if they throw blitz at it,
- 18:44Speaker 6: we've already talked about how we're gonna block it.
- 18:45Speaker 2: He didn't deny it. He didn't deny that they are
- 18:48Speaker 2: throwing dialing.
- 18:49Speaker 6: No, he didn't deny it, but he said that they
- 18:52Speaker 6: they work hand in hand. Like Bill O'Brien sits down
- 18:55Speaker 6: with Steve Belichick and Gerrod Mayo and Bill and they say, Okay,
- 18:59Speaker 6: what are we going to work on today? And they're
- 19:01Speaker 6: not gonna throw a blitz at the offense that they
- 19:04Speaker 6: haven't discussed how are we going to block this?
- 19:06Speaker 2: Right?
- 19:07Speaker 6: And so it's a test, clearly, But I'm with you
- 19:10Speaker 6: a little bit, Deuce that it's kind of like goes
- 19:13Speaker 6: back to last preseason when Wink Martin Dill and the
- 19:16Speaker 6: Giants was like throwing all these exotic looks at the
- 19:19Speaker 6: Patriots in the first preseason game and Bill got snippy
- 19:21Speaker 6: about it, and it's like, I don't think it's quite
- 19:25Speaker 6: oh we're trying to win practice, Like, I don't think
- 19:27Speaker 6: it's quite that territory. But it's interesting that they were
- 19:30Speaker 6: really they were dialing it up and seeing how the
- 19:33Speaker 6: offense handled it, and it was a test well.
- 19:35Speaker 4: And I think too, like when you know, I think
- 19:37Speaker 4: when you talk about dialing it up on defense, it's
- 19:40Speaker 4: it's a it's a good way to kind of cover
- 19:42Speaker 4: up weaknesses and disguise things that maybe you want to
- 19:45Speaker 4: disguise and you know. So I just I just wonder
- 19:47Speaker 4: if maybe they're playing a little bit more straightforward, if guys,
- 19:50Speaker 4: you're gonna get a little better sense of how guys
- 19:52Speaker 4: are just straight up like it's not you know, hey,
- 19:54Speaker 4: oh we got them on this this one, we fooled everybody, Like,
- 19:57Speaker 4: I don't know, But I also wonder is it connected
- 19:59Speaker 4: to the offense? Are they, you know, really trying to
- 20:02Speaker 4: make it as hard as possible for Mac in the offense.
- 20:05Speaker 4: But I mean, just to say it, I just I
- 20:07Speaker 4: just not impressed with Mac. I just think he's the
- 20:09Speaker 4: same player he's been.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, what if he said, you know, go ahead,
- 20:15Speaker 2: you know.
- 20:16Speaker 3: But I agree with the way Evan said it.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they probably did do that intentionally, but
- 20:22Speaker 4: not because the offense hasn't gone over it yet. I
- 20:25Speaker 4: want to see how the offense was going to handle it,
- 20:26Speaker 4: and overall, the offense like part of this equation. We
- 20:30Speaker 4: talked a lot about this Monday and Tuesday. The offensive
- 20:33Speaker 4: line is, you know, you have two guys that you
- 20:36Speaker 4: feel probably rock solid about in David Andrews and Michael
- 20:40Speaker 4: and you. I don't really know exactly what col Strange
- 20:45Speaker 4: is yet, but I feel Okay about that. The two
- 20:47Speaker 4: tackles are enormous question marks, huge, right, and bigger now
- 20:51Speaker 4: than they were last week. Yeah, so you have Calvin
- 20:54Speaker 4: Anderson spent most, if not all, of the quote unquote
- 20:58Speaker 4: first team reps when we will watch at left tackle.
- 21:01Speaker 3: That's been a problem like that they've had. And it's
- 21:05Speaker 3: hard with no pads on. Excuse me, yeah, it's hard
- 21:08Speaker 3: with no pads on. But it looked like pressure was
- 21:11Speaker 3: an issue, not just blitzing pressure, but blitzing you know,
- 21:14Speaker 3: pressure off the edge.
- 21:15Speaker 6: You just get into a cat a situation where now
- 21:19Speaker 6: Bill O'Brien is probably gonna have to scheme around having
- 21:24Speaker 6: subpar tackles. So now that's gonna have to be part
- 21:26Speaker 6: of the game plan, is all right, We're gonna have
- 21:28Speaker 6: to get the ball out quickly. We're gonna have to
- 21:30Speaker 6: be a little bit more smoking mirrors, honestly to make
- 21:35Speaker 6: sure that we protect the tackles. If that's really where
- 21:37Speaker 6: this is headed. I don't want to be too negative,
- 21:40Speaker 6: but I'm just like, would do a little bit on
- 21:42Speaker 6: this where I just like, it's fine, everything was fine,
- 21:46Speaker 6: but nothing offensively wowed me, Like there was nothing that
- 21:51Speaker 6: That's how I.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Would feel I don't think it was bad, but nothing
- 21:53Speaker 3: wowed me, And it seems like a lot of other
- 21:55Speaker 3: people have been wild.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And you don't have any wow guys out there, right.
- 22:00Speaker 6: I just I think that with Mac, he's gonna be
- 22:04Speaker 6: put in a better position. He's going to be more
- 22:06Speaker 6: in rhythm. He's going to understand what is expected of
- 22:09Speaker 6: him and what are his tools, as he says, are
- 22:12Speaker 6: pre snap and things like that. And he's mentally he's
- 22:16Speaker 6: going to be locked in and he's going to be
- 22:17Speaker 6: screwed in. But physically, it's not like all of a
- 22:21Speaker 6: sudden he's got an arm cannon and he's mobile, right
- 22:23Speaker 6: Like he's still the same guy that he all that
- 22:25Speaker 6: he's been for the first two years in the league.
- 22:27Speaker 6: So how much of a difference is that truly going
- 22:30Speaker 6: to make? That he is locked in mentally, and I
- 22:33Speaker 6: think that that's that's a difference between them, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 6: winning seven games and winning ten is is this really
- 22:39Speaker 6: gonna make such a big difference that to the point
- 22:42Speaker 6: where when all the chips are down and it's third
- 22:46Speaker 6: and six with two minutes to go and they need
- 22:48Speaker 6: to they need to put a drive together. Are they
- 22:51Speaker 6: going to have the horses to put it together. And
- 22:53Speaker 6: I think that that's still the biggest question with the.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Team September tenth. Can't get here fast enough, right.
- 22:58Speaker 4: You know?
- 22:58Speaker 3: And and again I don't think any of the three
- 23:00Speaker 3: of us thinks it was a disaster. You know, it's
- 23:03Speaker 3: Panics last year.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean not Mini Camp.
- 23:06Speaker 3: No, No, absolutely, I don't think anybody is looking at
- 23:09Speaker 3: it like that. But I just there's been a lot
- 23:13Speaker 3: of I've seen a lot of you know, like uh
- 23:15Speaker 3: five who popped me? And Mac is on every single
- 23:18Speaker 3: one of them, and I missed the popping.
- 23:21Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Is I guess it also sounds like you guys feel
- 23:24Speaker 3: the same way.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I'd also say, like you said, last year Mini Camp,
- 23:28Speaker 6: they were throwing the ball down the field pretty well.
- 23:31Speaker 6: And I gotta be honest with you. With Mac, I
- 23:33Speaker 6: don't give a crap about seven on seven. I know
- 23:36Speaker 6: he can throw the ball in seven on seven.
- 23:38Speaker 3: It's amazing if they still chot that, right.
- 23:40Speaker 6: So I he has never he's from day one, he's
- 23:44Speaker 6: torn up seven on seven. So I I just with him,
- 23:47Speaker 6: it's about the pass rush, Like, how is it gonna
- 23:49Speaker 6: look in a muddied pocket? How is it gonna look
- 23:51Speaker 6: when he's got guys in his face or guys at
- 23:54Speaker 6: his feet like that. This is not that like seven
- 23:56Speaker 6: on set. So yeah, he can drop dimes to Kasiki
- 23:59Speaker 6: and DeVante all day in seven on seven, But what's
- 24:03Speaker 6: it going to look like? And that's why these like
- 24:04Speaker 6: completion rates and stuff like that from from mini camps,
- 24:07Speaker 6: Like there's there's no live pass rush there. They're not
- 24:10Speaker 6: pushing the pocket, they're not you know, there's nobody at
- 24:12Speaker 6: his feet. He's stepping into every throw. He's got time
- 24:15Speaker 6: and space, he knows he's not going to get touched.
- 24:17Speaker 6: So obviously if he can't drop dimes in that setting,
- 24:20Speaker 6: then he's then he's really in.
- 24:22Speaker 3: And one quick thing that Evan just said, that's really
- 24:24Speaker 3: important I think for him specifically stepping into every throw. Yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 3: I think that's a big part of Mac and I
- 24:30Speaker 3: always you know, I'm it's no secret that I'm really
- 24:34Speaker 3: skeptical on Mac right and that, But that's one of
- 24:36Speaker 3: the things is I think everything has to be right
- 24:38Speaker 3: because I don't think the physical skills are there to
- 24:41Speaker 3: fall back on all the time with him, and I
- 24:43Speaker 3: agree with with Evan. I think he can throw the
- 24:45Speaker 3: ball as effectively, is you need to in that league? Yeah,
- 24:49Speaker 3: no question, but when it's right, yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I mean one other tackle thing to point out was
- 24:54Speaker 4: it seemed kind of like Connor McDermott maybe was getting
- 24:56Speaker 4: the higher reps above Riley Reef. So it's just you know,
- 24:59Speaker 4: those kind of things where I'm like, really, so we
- 25:01Speaker 4: brought in Riley Reef and he can't even really hold
- 25:03Speaker 4: onto the top reps through mini camp like you know,
- 25:06Speaker 4: I mean, nobody was thrilled with those signings kind of
- 25:09Speaker 4: out of the gate. Uh, everything you said though, this
- 25:12Speaker 4: is it all ties directly to the protection. I mean,
- 25:13Speaker 4: these are you know, the edges are nothing's more important
- 25:16Speaker 4: von Miller. I mean, go down the list of all
- 25:17Speaker 4: the pass rushers Miami, Bradley Chubb. I mean, it's you know,
- 25:20Speaker 4: they're going to have their work cut out for them.
- 25:22Speaker 4: I mean right from the get go. And I just
- 25:24Speaker 4: I wonder what the deal is with Trent Brown, you know,
- 25:27Speaker 4: is it I know he missed a flight, that happens
- 25:30Speaker 4: just kind of watched. Were they expecting when he got
- 25:32Speaker 4: here that he was going to be in shape and
- 25:33Speaker 4: ready to participate?
- 25:34Speaker 3: That's something I wanted to talk about too. And I
- 25:37Speaker 3: also want to move to defense because I think we're
- 25:39Speaker 3: all much more.
- 25:40Speaker 4: I almost tried to start them. We're almost I didn't
- 25:42Speaker 4: do it on the defense.
- 25:43Speaker 3: But Trent Brown, do you think that that was you know,
- 25:47Speaker 3: like he hasn't been here all spring, you know, all right,
- 25:51Speaker 3: because he didn't do much, if anything. He took part
- 25:54Speaker 3: like a couple of drill barely stretched, I mean, walk
- 25:56Speaker 3: into some of our colleagues, you know, took it a
- 26:00Speaker 3: step further and saying that he couldn't finish some of
- 26:02Speaker 3: the drills and tapped out. These are the comments that
- 26:07Speaker 3: I heard, Yeah, and was sent down to the lower
- 26:10Speaker 3: rehab field. I kind of watching from afar our, you know,
- 26:12Speaker 3: our thirty thousand foot look. I look at it.
- 26:15Speaker 4: It's like, you know, you just got here, and you
- 26:17Speaker 4: know he's probably not in the best of shape. I mean,
- 26:19Speaker 4: we know that's been an issue. That's why he has
- 26:21Speaker 4: all those incentives in his contract. And that was you know,
- 26:24Speaker 4: standing operating procedure. You know you got to go and
- 26:26Speaker 4: get him ready. Well tie into Jude on two because
- 26:28Speaker 4: I mean that's not exactly the same. But wasn't here
- 26:31Speaker 4: kind of played second team reps, wasn't you know it wasn't.
- 26:34Speaker 4: I mean, still was more involved than Trent Brown was,
- 26:36Speaker 4: but yeah by a lot, but was reduced a little bit.
- 26:38Speaker 4: I just don't know. I really don't, and I don't know.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I just wonder though.
- 26:42Speaker 4: It's like, but it's like, if you're not in shape
- 26:43Speaker 4: and you can't even participate, then what are we doing?
- 26:46Speaker 4: Why are you here? You know, like what this is
- 26:47Speaker 4: mandatory mini camp? Like this is a chance. I'm sure
- 26:50Speaker 4: that guy still got weight clauses right, like he probably
- 26:52Speaker 4: had to weigh in, I'm guessing.
- 26:54Speaker 3: So I wonder if that's why he didn't do anything,
- 26:55Speaker 3: because maybe he didn't go get your on and I
- 26:59Speaker 3: will I will say some of the highlights, some of
- 27:02Speaker 3: the highlights that I saw last night of him, you know,
- 27:05Speaker 3: sort of up close and we were up in the ramps.
- 27:07Speaker 3: He did look a little big. Now he's a huge guy.
- 27:10Speaker 3: It's hard to tell him when.
- 27:11Speaker 4: He walked onto the field, Freddy a hulking fit.
- 27:13Speaker 9: Help.
- 27:13Speaker 4: I mean, he could be like plus or minus sixty pounds.
- 27:15Speaker 4: You probably rightn't tell share up to the Queen Mary.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's a problem right now and it's up
- 27:24Speaker 2: all upstairs. Do you do you want to play? Football.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Do you want to do what is necessary to play well?
- 27:30Speaker 2: And that starts with getting your mind and body and shape.
- 27:33Speaker 4: And it's it's just even you know everything we ran
- 27:36Speaker 4: down with. You know, Calvin Anderson, who I mean, I
- 27:38Speaker 4: think he's kind of like we're all praying to God
- 27:40Speaker 4: that he can play. But in your mind, you're like
- 27:43Speaker 4: trump Brown, please, like you can play both sides. You're
- 27:45Speaker 4: a giant guy. We know you have the skill, like,
- 27:47Speaker 4: help us because if there's anything this team could really use,
- 27:51Speaker 4: it's just lock down one side. I don't even care
- 27:52Speaker 4: which side it is, But can you just give us
- 27:54Speaker 4: seventeen games play good?
- 27:56Speaker 2: You can be as good as you want to be.
- 27:59Speaker 2: You know, that's the thing.
- 28:00Speaker 6: But this is what happens when you ignore it in
- 28:02Speaker 6: the draft, yep, Because now there's no young guy, Like
- 28:06Speaker 6: it's not like you have even an Isaiah Win that's
- 28:09Speaker 6: sitting there that's like, oh well, we have to go
- 28:11Speaker 6: to him sooner than we thought, right, so be it.
- 28:14Speaker 6: So you don't have that guy on this team right now.
- 28:16Speaker 6: So if Riley Reef doesn't have it anymore and Trent
- 28:21Speaker 6: Brown is not locked in, then then you're Calvin Anderson
- 28:25Speaker 6: and Connor McDermott, and that's what you're you're stuck with
- 28:28Speaker 6: right for the season. And you know, we've talked about it,
- 28:31Speaker 6: like franchise tackles don't come available in August, Like that's
- 28:34Speaker 6: you know, that's a spot that there's only so many
- 28:36Speaker 6: of them in the league.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Unless it's Robert Gallery, there's only.
- 28:39Speaker 6: So many of them in the league to begin with,
- 28:41Speaker 6: and a lot of teams have tackle deficiencies because there
- 28:45Speaker 6: aren't enough good starting tackles league wide. So they're not
- 28:49Speaker 6: they're not gonna make some guy a Pro Bowl level
- 28:51Speaker 6: tackle is not coming available on September first, Like this
- 28:54Speaker 6: is just kind of what you got.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to like like who knows, maybe,
- 28:57Speaker 4: I mean Connor McDermott is not like super old, Like
- 29:00Speaker 4: maybe maybe he's getting a chance and maybe he's improving,
- 29:02Speaker 4: but I just think, like the simple fact is that
- 29:05Speaker 4: you're going to have to start a guy you plucked
- 29:07Speaker 4: off a practice squad last year. Well, you couldn't improve
- 29:10Speaker 4: that player.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Remember remember the you know our you know uh saying here,
- 29:15Speaker 2: look at what they do, not what they say. And
- 29:17Speaker 2: so let's see if there's any movement at tackle, you know,
- 29:21Speaker 2: in terms of just you know, I know they're not
- 29:23Speaker 2: going to bring in a high end but if there's
- 29:24Speaker 2: any movement in du yeah, bringing anybody in, and that'll
- 29:28Speaker 2: tell us.
- 29:28Speaker 3: That's part of the reason why I'm concerned because I'm
- 29:30Speaker 3: watching what they have done. As Mike said, it's Reef, now,
- 29:34Speaker 3: it's McDermott, it's reportedly working out a guy like DJ
- 29:38Speaker 3: Flucker like. But we think they think it's an issue.
- 29:41Speaker 2: But but I think it was grow or even Belichick
- 29:44Speaker 2: might have just talked about you know, we're happy with
- 29:46Speaker 2: gros said they were happy with happy with the depth.
- 29:48Speaker 2: The depth at tackle. That's different to me than who
- 29:52Speaker 2: we have starting and so I'm still wait. I think
- 29:55Speaker 2: it's still a work in progress.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Well, it feels like they're happy with they got a
- 29:58Speaker 4: bunch of B minus C plus guys that they're happy
- 30:01Speaker 4: to rotate around. But do you have a brief plus
- 30:04Speaker 4: darter on you?
- 30:05Speaker 2: So I still think there's something to be to wait
- 30:08Speaker 2: and see on the tackle front.
- 30:09Speaker 4: I thought they would make that in terms of the
- 30:11Speaker 4: caliber of player.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Well first determining what do we got out of Trent Brown?
- 30:16Speaker 2: What can we have?
- 30:17Speaker 3: But I think what you see is what you get
- 30:19Speaker 3: in terms of the ability.
- 30:20Speaker 2: But that's you know, that's one. But I'm talking about
- 30:22Speaker 2: is he gonna be with us? Is he gonna give
- 30:24Speaker 2: it full effort? If you know, do we have to
- 30:26Speaker 2: worry about Trent Brown? Yes, you know, whether.
- 30:29Speaker 3: He's here or not, you're gonna have to I mean,
- 30:30Speaker 3: whether if he's as long as he's.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Here, you will have to worry about him. Yeah, But
- 30:34Speaker 4: because that's the player he's been, you had to worry
- 30:36Speaker 4: about him in eighteen we know great.
- 30:38Speaker 2: But I think the level of that worry we'll see
- 30:42Speaker 2: in their actions.
- 30:44Speaker 4: You know, well, they got two open roster spots. So
- 30:46Speaker 4: I mean, I I coming out of camp, I felt
- 30:48Speaker 4: like you got to go add some death. I mean,
- 30:50Speaker 4: I hate to say more depth, because that's all you
- 30:53Speaker 4: can really get at this point.
- 30:54Speaker 6: So I mean, if Flucker's in as good of shape
- 30:57Speaker 6: as the videos suggest he is, that why.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Not what do you have to lose?
- 31:02Speaker 2: And I like the idea of a guy who you
- 31:05Speaker 2: know was away for the game could have you know,
- 31:07Speaker 2: it's not like he hasn't been in the league, been
- 31:09Speaker 2: in the league since thirteen, motivated to want to get
- 31:11Speaker 2: he had every reason to just walk away, but he
- 31:13Speaker 2: wanted to get back he lost all that weight. There's
- 31:16Speaker 2: something to be said for that. Yep, there's something to
- 31:17Speaker 2: be said about Okay, this guy appreciates what he had,
- 31:22Speaker 2: wants to get it back, and maybe for at least
- 31:24Speaker 2: a year, he's motivated.
- 31:26Speaker 4: You know, at this point, anybody with T after their name,
- 31:30Speaker 4: like just I think you need it. I'd love to
- 31:32Speaker 4: just take a shot on somebody. I mean, he has
- 31:35Speaker 4: was the first round pick. He was the first round pick,
- 31:36Speaker 4: so he has a little bit of like, well, maybe
- 31:38Speaker 4: like you could have maybe fool yourself into thinking that
- 31:41Speaker 4: he's going to find the magic, but it's, uh, it's
- 31:44Speaker 4: it's an issue. And I think that you know, it's
- 31:46Speaker 4: Evan laid out. Once it gets real, then you're really
- 31:48Speaker 4: going to get a sense of of how Max's going
- 31:50Speaker 4: to play with this kind of protection.
- 31:51Speaker 3: To me, the most positive stuff that we saw in
- 31:55Speaker 3: mini camp was the stuff that we kind of went
- 31:57Speaker 3: in thinking there could be a lot of versatility with
- 32:01Speaker 3: the defense, and I think we've seen it, and you know,
- 32:03Speaker 3: I know that the players talked about it. Peppers talked
- 32:05Speaker 3: about it a little bit, Judon talked about it a lot.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Judon to the point where I was like relax, a
- 32:13Speaker 3: little bit wet, like six unicorns out there. But they
- 32:16Speaker 3: do have you know, some different some different options with
- 32:21Speaker 3: how they want to how they want to use some guys.
- 32:24Speaker 3: And you know, on the surface, I do see it
- 32:27Speaker 3: the way that they talk about it, because it's you know,
- 32:29Speaker 3: it's Adrian Phillips, it's Jabrill Peppers, it's Mapoo.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Now you know, get these.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Guys Kyle Dugar that can operate, you know, in the
- 32:38Speaker 3: back end, closer to the line of scrimmage. They can
- 32:40Speaker 3: be in coverage, they can be run support players. I
- 32:43Speaker 3: just wonder if maybe it's a little bit you know, repetitive,
- 32:47Speaker 3: you know, and I do wonder if they have to
- 32:49Speaker 3: make a move for a tackle like we were talking about,
- 32:51Speaker 3: is one of these guys, you know, is an Adrian
- 32:53Speaker 3: Phillips maybe expendable, you know, maybe can can he get
- 32:56Speaker 3: you a Jonah Williams who I saw somebody I think
- 33:00Speaker 3: Phil Perry speculated that's the kind of guy you're gonna
- 33:04Speaker 3: get at this time of year.
- 33:05Speaker 4: A guy who maybe lost his job several injuries.
- 33:08Speaker 3: In Cincinnati, right it's been hurt and you know, maybe
- 33:12Speaker 3: he's disgruntled and wants to go to New England to
- 33:15Speaker 3: get gruntled.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean not to go negative on the defense too, but.
- 33:19Speaker 6: Like, don't do it.
- 33:20Speaker 4: We've seen this, like you know, hybrid safety scheme for
- 33:24Speaker 4: three years now, right, Like, I mean, they've had a
- 33:26Speaker 4: few safeties that have this versatility. It hasn't mattered against Buffalo,
- 33:30Speaker 4: against I mean, against the good teams. They're not really
- 33:32Speaker 4: fooled by it, Like they don't really like, oh god,
- 33:34Speaker 4: they really got us on that one. Like, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 4: so it all sounds great in theory, but like they
- 33:37Speaker 4: just need to start producing against.
- 33:39Speaker 2: When they do get burned most of the you know,
- 33:41Speaker 2: like they just can't get off on third down or whatever,
- 33:44Speaker 2: isn't it because they just the play gets extended. They
- 33:48Speaker 2: just can't get to the quarterback. They can't just.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Time you know. Yeah, I mean.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Last year, if the front seven is better, like that's
- 33:56Speaker 2: gonna I think that'll help, right, well, it will.
- 33:59Speaker 4: But who's the who's the new person in the front seven?
- 34:02Speaker 4: So again, White's gonna make you like better than you
- 34:05Speaker 4: were last.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Year when you mesh everything together. Barbour will be healthy
- 34:09Speaker 2: because he wasn't healthy last year.
- 34:10Speaker 4: I like that. Yeah, I like that, But you know,
- 34:12Speaker 4: like Minnesota justin Jefferson went off, he didn't have the
- 34:15Speaker 4: corner or you know, Lamar, you just couldn't figure out.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I'm going to say quarter, this is great deuces, just
- 34:21Speaker 4: take take the.
- 34:24Speaker 3: I don't know, wait like during the season when that happens,
- 34:27Speaker 3: you know, I'll certainly be right next to you. I'm
- 34:31Speaker 3: encouraged by the defense. Fred Fred Fred keeps saying top five.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I don't think it will take very much to get
- 34:39Speaker 3: I think.
- 34:39Speaker 4: No, I'm not going to walk it back and anyway,
- 34:41Speaker 4: because I mean, just does anyone think that Josh Allen
- 34:43Speaker 4: is really like confounded by the Patriots Amiba defense for safeties?
- 34:48Speaker 3: Those guys, see, those guys aren't really confounded by.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Any right kind of They can helate it.
- 34:52Speaker 3: You can have a bad day, I mean, anybody can
- 34:54Speaker 3: have a bad day at any time.
- 34:55Speaker 4: But you know, he started selling us on we got
- 34:58Speaker 4: five safeties.
- 34:58Speaker 3: That I think they were ten last year, so I
- 35:03Speaker 3: can certainly see them finishing top five.
- 35:05Speaker 6: I think they should be top one. Honestly, I think
- 35:08Speaker 6: this should be the best defensive.
- 35:09Speaker 3: You think this is a better personnel than since San
- 35:11Speaker 3: Francisco has.
- 35:13Speaker 6: I think it's right up there because their secondary is better.
- 35:16Speaker 3: I don't think they have any linebackers like since San Francis.
- 35:19Speaker 2: But but you don't shut down my homes, you don't
- 35:21Speaker 2: shut down. You hope that you could make three or
- 35:23Speaker 2: four key stops. That's it, that's true, that's it, and
- 35:25Speaker 2: give you and then, like Evan says, your offense has
- 35:29Speaker 2: to step up. They have to maybe score thirty points
- 35:32Speaker 2: to win that game.
- 35:33Speaker 3: And I'm not even talking necessarily because I think there
- 35:36Speaker 3: were times last year against the really good teams that
- 35:38Speaker 3: they did get three or four.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Stops, right, but the offense don't get help them.
- 35:41Speaker 3: But they don't get it when they need it.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah, ye, well that's been a key stop.
- 35:45Speaker 3: That No, no, no, I didn you said they have
- 35:47Speaker 3: to come up with.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Three worst stops. I use the word key, can't use
- 35:51Speaker 2: the word key.
- 35:52Speaker 3: So they got three or four key stops, but they
- 35:54Speaker 3: couldn't get the fifth one when they needed to win
- 35:56Speaker 3: the game was on the line, most like the one
- 35:58Speaker 3: that you just talked about against Minnesota though, like against Buffalo. Yeah,
- 36:02Speaker 3: everybody talks about the kickoff returns, but in the fourth quarter,
- 36:05Speaker 3: when you're right in the game, you can't stop them.
- 36:08Speaker 3: They go right down the field to score two possessions
- 36:10Speaker 3: in a row the Raiders in a game, everybody wants
- 36:13Speaker 3: to talk about the lateral. Before the lateral happened, the
- 36:16Speaker 3: lateral would have been irrelevant. If you could just get
- 36:18Speaker 3: off the field on fourth and ten.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Well, they did that play in the end zone.
- 36:21Speaker 10: Win. No.
- 36:22Speaker 3: On fourth and ten. It was pitch and catch, as
- 36:23Speaker 3: easy as it can be right down the fields.
- 36:27Speaker 6: It's the same thing as the offense. For me, it's
- 36:30Speaker 6: it's the clutch plays. It's exact, because that's the difference
- 36:32Speaker 6: between being eight and nine and ten and seven.
- 36:34Speaker 3: And that's why I'm not concerned about what ranking they
- 36:36Speaker 3: have on defense. Can they stop somebody when they need
- 36:39Speaker 3: to stop somebody of any kind of consequence? I actually
- 36:42Speaker 3: that's not named Sam Ellinger.
- 36:44Speaker 6: But I'm I'm high on the defense, not because of
- 36:47Speaker 6: the seventeen safeties that they have, but because of the
- 36:50Speaker 6: fact that I think that the top three picks in
- 36:52Speaker 6: the draft I think are missing ingredients for the defense.
- 36:56Speaker 6: Because Gonzales, even if Gonzales is not all pro corner
- 37:01Speaker 6: right away, he puts everybody in the proper spot, and
- 37:05Speaker 6: he the pecking order, just like we talk with the receivers,
- 37:08Speaker 6: with Hopkins, and how that can make everybody go down.
- 37:11Speaker 6: And now you have Jonathan Jones back in the slot.
- 37:14Speaker 6: You have Jack Jones as your second boundary corner, and
- 37:17Speaker 6: Gonzalez is your number one guy, and it fits together.
- 37:21Speaker 4: It all is.
- 37:21Speaker 6: Last year, the problem that they had against a lot
- 37:24Speaker 6: of these teams is that Jonathan Jones was playing as
- 37:26Speaker 6: the number one corner. And Jonathan Jones is a great player,
- 37:29Speaker 6: but he's not a number one corner. So when they
- 37:32Speaker 6: went up against Justin Jefferson, when they went up against
- 37:34Speaker 6: Thefon Diggs, they didn't have the proper personnel in the secondary,
- 37:38Speaker 6: and it had a trickle down effect because you got
- 37:40Speaker 6: guys like Miles Bryant out there for a lot of
- 37:42Speaker 6: snaps and teams just pick on those types of guys.
- 37:45Speaker 6: I don't think that the secondary is going to be
- 37:47Speaker 6: as vulnerable to being picked on like that because Gonzalez
- 37:50Speaker 6: puts everybody in the proper spot. And if there is
- 37:53Speaker 6: a big if, but if they use Mapu correctly and
- 37:57Speaker 6: have him play at the second level of the defense,
- 37:59Speaker 6: now you have somebody in the middle of the field
- 38:01Speaker 6: at the second level who can cover some ground. And
- 38:04Speaker 6: that's such a big difference between what they've had and
- 38:06Speaker 6: what they because he's bigger and he's heavier. He plays
- 38:09Speaker 6: heavier than the safeties do. He plays like a linebacker,
- 38:13Speaker 6: but he's got a safety body type and safety speed.
- 38:16Speaker 6: If that is at the second level of the defense.
- 38:18Speaker 6: Now you talk about San Francisco and their linebackers, that's
- 38:22Speaker 6: what their linebackers bring to the table. That's what you
- 38:25Speaker 6: know green Law and Fred Warner bring to the table
- 38:27Speaker 6: for them that make them so good. So I think
- 38:30Speaker 6: that this defense has the makings of getting off the
- 38:34Speaker 6: field against better offenses this year because of the draft picks,
- 38:37Speaker 6: and you have some hope on that's that you have
- 38:40Speaker 6: some high end talent, you have some infusion of real
- 38:43Speaker 6: talent and that side of the ball, and you're not
- 38:45Speaker 6: just replacing guys like they are on offense.
- 38:47Speaker 3: And I think that sort of dovetails into what's you know,
- 38:50Speaker 3: we talked about everybody talking about Mac Jones popping and
- 38:55Speaker 3: we were like, eh, maybe, well another guy that a
- 38:58Speaker 3: lot of people had included was Jack Jones popping.
- 39:01Speaker 4: That one I would wholeheartedly agree with. Yep. I think
- 39:03Speaker 4: he had a couple of really good days Monday and Tuesday.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Again, we understand the competition evaluation all that, So that
- 39:10Speaker 3: disclaimer was out there, we understand. But I thought he
- 39:13Speaker 3: was active. I thought he was really tight in his coverage,
- 39:17Speaker 3: making plays on the ball. Had a really nice pick
- 39:20Speaker 3: at one point coming off of his man.
- 39:22Speaker 4: I think he had born on a.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Play and came over and undercut a deep sort of
- 39:27Speaker 3: fade down the side, almost like a real kind of
- 39:28Speaker 3: concept to a tight end.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I think he's part of that clean thing that's going
- 39:34Speaker 2: on with the team.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Well, and that's but that's that's important because to Evan's point,
- 39:38Speaker 3: Gonzalez puts everybody in their spots. Right, So if Gonzalez
- 39:42Speaker 3: is one in Jack Jones is two. Now you have,
- 39:45Speaker 3: in my opinion, Jonathan Jones where he belongs is in
- 39:47Speaker 3: the slot. And you can use these other guys the
- 39:51Speaker 3: way you want to. You can use Jalen Mills as
- 39:53Speaker 3: a deep free safety if you want to. Now, maybe
- 39:56Speaker 3: you have other options. Maybe you want to use all
- 39:57Speaker 3: these hybrid safeties in different ways. You don't want use
- 40:00Speaker 3: Jalen Mills that way, whatever, But you can do what
- 40:02Speaker 3: you want to do as opposed to.
- 40:05Speaker 4: What you have to do. Right, Yeah, that allows you
- 40:07Speaker 4: to do have more creative and I don't.
- 40:09Speaker 6: Need to like pick on him, but seriously, getting Miles
- 40:11Speaker 6: bryan off the field defensively makes the defense a lot better.
- 40:15Speaker 6: It just does. Like Jonathan Jone is just a much
- 40:18Speaker 6: better star or nickel, whatever you want to call it,
- 40:20Speaker 6: than Miles Bryant is and that really helps. And I
- 40:23Speaker 6: just with Jack Jones. Now he's got the freedom to
- 40:27Speaker 6: go and hunt for the football, and now he can
- 40:29Speaker 6: be that ballhawk that we know that he can be.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Because Christian Gonzalez is the one that's gonna go seventy
- 40:34Speaker 6: snaps against the fon Diggs and be in his face. Now,
- 40:37Speaker 6: is that gonna work out year one right off the bat,
- 40:40Speaker 6: that he's gonna take aj Brown and shut him down.
- 40:42Speaker 6: That's not what I'm saying, but it just the idea
- 40:44Speaker 6: of it is there for that potential to be there.
- 40:47Speaker 6: So I thought I came out of trade this offseason
- 40:50Speaker 6: in the spring thinking this defense really could be one
- 40:54Speaker 6: of the better defenses in the league truly, not just
- 40:57Speaker 6: like beating up on Sam Ellinger, but like padded stats.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, But I think too, Evan, you know,
- 41:03Speaker 4: like to your point saying I think we should Uh,
- 41:05Speaker 4: I'm good with Jude on like I just I'll see
- 41:07Speaker 4: Jude on week one, you know. Oh yeah, that illustrates
- 41:10Speaker 4: that it is a little bit tenuous in a couple
- 41:12Speaker 4: of positions I think where one or two key injuries
- 41:14Speaker 4: could could really hurt, especially at that outside linemacros spot,
- 41:18Speaker 4: which is you know, kind of when we saw Kem White.
- 41:20Speaker 4: So I'm really curious to see what he looks like
- 41:22Speaker 4: with pads on how much of a handful is he
- 41:24Speaker 4: really for those offensive linemen. I I'm intrigued by just
- 41:28Speaker 4: where he was playing, but I still don't really know
- 41:30Speaker 4: exactly what he is. I think that's the case though
- 41:32Speaker 4: with pretty much any linement at this point, you.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Know, Mike and Charlotte writes in fred KPI is key
- 41:38Speaker 2: performance indicators? I said, index. I've heard it index. It's
- 41:42Speaker 2: either one. It's the same thing.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Either way.
- 41:44Speaker 3: It's well above my tax bracket.
- 41:46Speaker 2: But anyway, I don't have it. I like it when
- 41:48Speaker 2: I'm corrected, all right, area that's five hundred. Is the
- 41:52Speaker 2: ACE ticket outline web radio at pagries dot com. Is
- 41:54Speaker 2: the email address anything else we want to just put
- 41:58Speaker 2: on the table before we open it up to the
- 41:59Speaker 2: listteners NFL stuff.
- 42:02Speaker 3: So I would say one last thing that you know,
- 42:04Speaker 3: you guys can really talk about in your own time.
- 42:06Speaker 3: But Joe Judge, no specialists, you know, the kickers, you know,
- 42:11Speaker 3: I think that it's going to be interesting to see
- 42:13Speaker 3: how both kickers and punter sort of play out over
- 42:16Speaker 3: the summer.
- 42:17Speaker 4: I think they'll all be close. I think those are.
- 42:18Speaker 4: I mean, I think the rookies will probably win. But
- 42:21Speaker 4: I don't think Nick Folk's going to go quietly, and
- 42:23Speaker 4: I don't think Corlos Waveman's going to go quietly either.
- 42:25Speaker 4: I mean, I I think he was a little bit
- 42:26Speaker 4: inconsistent from the few you know here and there that
- 42:28Speaker 4: I saw. But I think it'll be uh, you know,
- 42:31Speaker 4: I don't know. You get excited for punter and kicker battles,
- 42:33Speaker 4: but it's always an interesting end to be the practice
- 42:35Speaker 4: with the kickers, you know, when you kind of go
- 42:36Speaker 4: back at the stop watch out. No, I don't know.
- 42:39Speaker 6: I think Ryland clearly hits the ball a lot better
- 42:42Speaker 6: than Folk at this time when I talked talking about
- 42:44Speaker 6: power right and when you also put into that kickoffs
- 42:49Speaker 6: after last year, you know, I just I think you
- 42:52Speaker 6: have to consider that. We'll see if you can, you know,
- 42:55Speaker 6: his control on the ball some of the preseason games,
- 42:57Speaker 6: things like.
- 42:58Speaker 2: That, does the new rule on kickoffs give any more
- 43:01Speaker 2: of a leg up? No pun intended. I don't think so,
- 43:05Speaker 2: you know, because you're gonna be kicking maybe shorter more often.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 43:09Speaker 6: I don't know. I think after last year, I if
- 43:11Speaker 6: they kick it out of the back of the end
- 43:13Speaker 6: zone every single time, I'm good with that. I never
- 43:15Speaker 6: want to see niaim heinz.
- 43:17Speaker 4: If it's going to the twenty five regardless a way
- 43:19Speaker 4: you kick it, Why do you have to kick it shorter.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Just to make them have a decision, you know, and
- 43:24Speaker 2: possibly a mistake, you know.
- 43:27Speaker 4: I mean, you're really relying on some guy wanting to
- 43:30Speaker 4: play hero ball, you know. I mean, because I gotta
- 43:32Speaker 4: imagine in any kind of situation where you can't have
- 43:37Speaker 4: a mess up absolutely like near the end of the game,
- 43:39Speaker 4: that they're not even gonna try, Like there's not even
- 43:41Speaker 4: gonna cross. You are not returning this ball. So I
- 43:44Speaker 4: don't know. I'm not sure how it's gonna play out,
- 43:47Speaker 4: but I don't think. I don't think it's gonna help folk.
- 43:49Speaker 3: No, I don't see how it could. Last year when
- 43:52Speaker 3: he was kicking them short it's amazing return.
- 43:54Speaker 2: So like on a punt, right when you punt the ball,
- 43:58Speaker 2: guy raises his hand for fair catch, where the ball
- 44:03Speaker 2: is down is where you start on a kickoff. If
- 44:06Speaker 2: the guy doesn't catch, if he raises his hand but doesn't.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Catch it, oh it's live.
- 44:11Speaker 2: It's live. It's a live ball. Yeah, okay.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Kickoff's a live ball.
- 44:14Speaker 2: So they're not gonna so it's still a live ball
- 44:16Speaker 2: if he doesn't catch it. Yeah, okay, hoping for a
- 44:21Speaker 2: bounce or something.
- 44:21Speaker 6: Right, maybe I don't know about I don't know. Now
- 44:24Speaker 6: that you have basically have to give up fair catch
- 44:26Speaker 6: rule kick.
- 44:27Speaker 3: You have to catch a kickoff. You have to catch
- 44:30Speaker 3: a kick in the past, you have. They didn't say
- 44:32Speaker 3: anything that the rules changed. Okay, that would be a
- 44:35Speaker 3: rule change. A kickoffs a live ball.
- 44:37Speaker 2: But it's not fair catch rules like fair.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Catch could always fair catch a kick, but that hasn't changed.
- 44:41Speaker 3: They've only changing where you're putting the ball. Okay, but
- 44:44Speaker 3: you always have had to catch.
- 44:45Speaker 2: You can't let it like fair catch and then like
- 44:48Speaker 2: get away from it because it's like the wind is
- 44:50Speaker 2: bad or anything like that.
- 44:51Speaker 3: No, do you understand what I'm saying, Like you like
- 44:53Speaker 3: forever you've been able to fair catch a kick, and
- 44:56Speaker 3: you would you would take possession where you caught the kick.
- 45:00Speaker 3: The only difference is they're putting the ball at the
- 45:02Speaker 3: twenty five if that fair catch takes place inside the
- 45:04Speaker 3: twenty five. Okay, that's the only change to the rule.
- 45:07Speaker 4: I watched the video yesterday that the officials put out
- 45:09Speaker 4: and that actually wasn't even part of it. Okay, did
- 45:12Speaker 4: you get a certificate for it?
- 45:13Speaker 3: I did not get that certificate.
- 45:14Speaker 2: It's unfair, right, because you're right, because otherwise it would
- 45:18Speaker 2: negate the whole on sidekick, you could just raise your hand.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Right, yeah, you know it's squibbing around fair catch. Yeah,
- 45:24Speaker 3: don't touch me. That's why people don't chip them high
- 45:27Speaker 3: on on side kicks, right, because you do is put
- 45:30Speaker 3: your hand up. Now you can't touch the guy and
- 45:32Speaker 3: all you just do is catch it.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Now you just can't touch it, right, Okay.
- 45:36Speaker 4: So unless they've made another alteration to the rule that
- 45:38Speaker 4: they haven't.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Can't do that without on sidekick, right.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Didn't get a certificate though, But you don't know.
- 45:45Speaker 3: For reason video it's the twenty five yard fair catch
- 45:47Speaker 3: thing wasn't part of the video. It also seemed to you,
- 45:50Speaker 3: guys can watch the yes that.
- 45:52Speaker 6: I alway didn't get it.
- 45:56Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out how I got it now.
- 45:58Speaker 4: You just just stunned me.
- 46:01Speaker 3: I think I just saw it on Twitter. I don't
- 46:03Speaker 3: really think it was sent to me. But anyway, the
- 46:05Speaker 3: twenty five yard touchback on the kickoff strangely wasn't part
- 46:10Speaker 3: of the video, and it also seemed to cut off
- 46:13Speaker 3: at a strange point, like there was more to the video.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Maybe it's like a rough cut of the video and
- 46:17Speaker 3: they're going to add that in there.
- 46:18Speaker 4: I don't know, poor poor.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Talking about like helmet contact, helmet use, tackle, yeah, bag heading,
- 46:26Speaker 3: all right, Toroy Vincent, you know, playing up the player
- 46:29Speaker 3: safety nonsense. Yeah, we care about you. Now that I
- 46:33Speaker 3: no longer play, we care about you.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Let's hear what from the listeners. Todd's in North Carolina?
- 46:37Speaker 2: What's up?
- 46:38Speaker 4: Todd?
- 46:39Speaker 11: Kind of like the way the show is going. We've
- 46:41Speaker 11: had positive Paul, and we've had dismal dues and all
- 46:44Speaker 11: and then twitch Pip flopping back and forth. It's been
- 46:46Speaker 11: a great show so far. Okay, So in that vein,
- 46:49Speaker 11: I have this fallowing idea. I want one thing you
- 46:52Speaker 11: feel optimistic about one concern and one thing ery might
- 46:55Speaker 11: be pleasantly surprised, and I can go first. Okay, I'm optimistic,
- 47:00Speaker 11: very optimistic about our defensive backfield, our DB's I think
- 47:04Speaker 11: that's just to give it. My concern actually is our
- 47:06Speaker 11: running backs. I don't know about our depth, and I
- 47:09Speaker 11: know the two young guys didn't get too much play
- 47:11Speaker 11: last year, and there's a bit of injury, so that's
- 47:13Speaker 11: my concern. I think I'm going to be pleasantly surprised
- 47:16Speaker 11: by our linebacking corps. So that's my three, and i'd
- 47:19Speaker 11: love to hear your guys three.
- 47:20Speaker 2: All right, thanks Tod.
- 47:21Speaker 6: Do you running back concerns on your own?
- 47:23Speaker 4: I am not concerned about running backs at all time.
- 47:26Speaker 4: It doesn't Yeah, I'd say I'm excited about the secondary.
- 47:30Speaker 4: I think that's a good one that covers a lot
- 47:31Speaker 4: of ground, some new places. I'd like to be pleasantly
- 47:35Speaker 4: surprised by Juju Smith Schuster. I think that you know,
- 47:37Speaker 4: if he is, you know, just a needle mover, like
- 47:40Speaker 4: I just don't want a guy who's going to catch
- 47:42Speaker 4: their down passes and fall down like I want somebody
- 47:44Speaker 4: who can make some plays. So that would be be
- 47:47Speaker 4: my pleasant surprise, and what was the other one?
- 47:49Speaker 2: What's your concern?
- 47:51Speaker 4: Concern?
- 47:53Speaker 3: Every everything else, everything we heard the first forty show,
- 47:58Speaker 3: everything else.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I mean, I hope my pleasant surprise is Taekwon Thwart.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good I mean, I think those two
- 48:04Speaker 4: guys pleasant surprise, you know, maybe the pleasant surprises that
- 48:07Speaker 4: they signed.
- 48:08Speaker 2: I'm optimistic overall about the defense, just overall, and you know,
- 48:12Speaker 2: I'm concerned, like you said, about the tackles.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, there's just no easy answer with those
- 48:17Speaker 4: tackle positions other than you know, a couple guys just
- 48:20Speaker 4: kind of play above their weight for a season.
- 48:24Speaker 6: Can we do past tense pleasantly surprised like what I
- 48:27Speaker 6: was presently surprised and many can't. Mike is SICKI yeah, okay,
- 48:32Speaker 6: that was much better than I was even anticipating. Like
- 48:37Speaker 6: I think you talking about production wise, like his better
- 48:40Speaker 6: years in Miami.
- 48:41Speaker 4: If he sixty seventy somewhere in that, yeah.
- 48:44Speaker 6: Seven hundred yards, eight hundred yards, If this keeps up
- 48:47Speaker 6: a lot more fluid natural instinctive of a receiver than
- 48:54Speaker 6: the guy he's replacing, just really looks like he is
- 48:57Speaker 6: a football player that you know, I could hands runs
- 49:01Speaker 6: routes well, explosive.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I was really we're gonna use him correct, Yeah,
- 49:06Speaker 4: how do you use him in the red zone? That's
- 49:07Speaker 4: what you know, Like, how are you gonna play with
- 49:08Speaker 4: those two guys, him and Hunter Henry. It sounds like
- 49:11Speaker 4: they're gonna be out there together a lot.
- 49:13Speaker 6: Yeah, And I just feel like, you know, the two things,
- 49:15Speaker 6: the three things that you kind of knew that he
- 49:17Speaker 6: could do. He could run, like he knew he was
- 49:19Speaker 6: gonna be able to run the scene and run across
- 49:20Speaker 6: the field and win some foot races like that in
- 49:23Speaker 6: the catch radius in the red zone production, I think
- 49:25Speaker 6: he thought it was going to be decent, but he
- 49:27Speaker 6: showed a little bit more wiggle and a little bit
- 49:29Speaker 6: more route running ability than what I kind of expected.
- 49:32Speaker 4: And he's at a level athletically well above Hunter Henry.
- 49:35Speaker 4: I think, yeah this point, Yeah, he's a little chemistry
- 49:38Speaker 4: with Mac too. I think, like just Max sing, their
- 49:40Speaker 4: a couple you know, quick, quick, get it out kind
- 49:42Speaker 4: of throws. And it wasn't great, but you know, like
- 49:44Speaker 4: pressure was coming because they dropped the level or whatever.
- 49:46Speaker 3: It was not just because I was I was thinking
- 49:49Speaker 3: the same. That's the thing I'm most excited about. Is
- 49:52Speaker 3: him being implemented into the offense.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yeah, own the red zone, big.
- 49:58Speaker 3: What the thing I'm con learned about is like the
- 50:02Speaker 3: offense in general, I remain concerned about, but specifically Mac
- 50:08Speaker 3: and the offensive line.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Those those two elements.
- 50:10Speaker 3: And then the thing that I'm I guess pleasantly I'm
- 50:14Speaker 3: hoping to be pleasantly surprised. But I think you guys
- 50:16Speaker 3: have really good ones with the receivers. But I'm gonna
- 50:21Speaker 3: say I'm going to be pleasantly surprised that it's just
- 50:26Speaker 3: defensively you can just match out. It's not it's no
- 50:31Speaker 3: longer just scheme related. It's just we can match up
- 50:33Speaker 3: up front, we can do what we do and we
- 50:35Speaker 3: can and we can get pressure. Like last year, I
- 50:37Speaker 3: felt like they got pressure at times, but not necessarily
- 50:41Speaker 3: when they needed it. I'm gonna be pleasantly surprised when
- 50:43Speaker 3: they get pressure when they need it.
- 50:45Speaker 6: Well, that's how you hope the coverage marries up right,
- 50:48Speaker 6: where if you're now forcing the quarterback to hold the
- 50:51Speaker 6: ball for an extra second because you have better coverage,
- 50:54Speaker 6: it allows those guys up front the.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Team I hope to be pleasantly surprised by that element
- 50:58Speaker 4: of the defense.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Willems and pelam, what up William? William, William, you're there?
- 51:08Speaker 4: I guess not.
- 51:10Speaker 2: I guess not. Let's see.
- 51:14Speaker 4: I think Mike was so negative that William didn't have
- 51:16Speaker 4: anything to add.
- 51:17Speaker 2: A lot of emails coming in, a lot of emails, just.
- 51:20Speaker 4: To parse it out a little bit though, Like I
- 51:22Speaker 4: share how you put it, Polly, Like you know, the
- 51:24Speaker 4: offense and the tackles are concerned. I just see the tackle.
- 51:27Speaker 4: If that's a big problem, that's just gonna that's gonna
- 51:29Speaker 4: undercut the whole offense right from the get, you know.
- 51:32Speaker 4: Like I think generally, if they get solid play, I
- 51:33Speaker 4: think they'll be okay. That doesn't mean I feel great,
- 51:35Speaker 4: but I just think that they're if they're getting subpart
- 51:38Speaker 4: play from the tackles, that that they're gonna be, they're
- 51:40Speaker 4: gonna be in trouble.
- 51:41Speaker 6: Uh.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Floyd in Redford, Michigan, Fred You once referred to Mac
- 51:45Speaker 2: as a high maintenance. As high maintenance, Evan has said
- 51:49Speaker 2: the following about Mac. He isn't good under center. He
- 51:51Speaker 2: doesn't have the arm to make the throw. He doesn't
- 51:53Speaker 2: have the confidence to make the throw. When someone brought
- 51:56Speaker 2: up the possibility of competition. Evan didn't want that and
- 51:59Speaker 2: said you got to put your arms around him. Paul
- 52:01Speaker 2: said he can't throw on the run. Can someone please
- 52:04Speaker 2: explain why we should be excited about having mac as
- 52:07Speaker 2: our QB.
- 52:08Speaker 6: I don't think I said any of those things that
- 52:10Speaker 6: he just listened off, So I don't know.
- 52:11Speaker 3: I do think no one's telling you you have to
- 52:14Speaker 3: be excited about the quarterback. I think we're all sort
- 52:17Speaker 3: of wondering about the quarterback. You could feel held about
- 52:21Speaker 3: the quarterback.
- 52:22Speaker 2: I think we all say it comes down to how
- 52:25Speaker 2: well he plays, and none of us really know.
- 52:27Speaker 3: I mean, that's kind of my whole my one concern
- 52:31Speaker 3: we just with the exercise with this question.
- 52:33Speaker 2: He can't be offense, he can't be as good as
- 52:35Speaker 2: he was as a rookie. He's got to be significantly
- 52:38Speaker 2: better than that, you know.
- 52:41Speaker 4: And just as far as an Ota mini camp practice goes,
- 52:44Speaker 4: he's he's just kind of the same guy, you know.
- 52:45Speaker 4: And you know, I was joking we were NFL Network's
- 52:48Speaker 4: going to air this that blood so first game of
- 52:50Speaker 4: Bloods second season where he went toe to toe with
- 52:53Speaker 4: Dan Marino kind of a you know, coming up coming
- 52:55Speaker 4: up right, you know, and Paul can speak to his
- 52:59Speaker 4: performance probably a little bit more clearly than I can.
- 53:01Speaker 4: But you know, I just you know, unfortunately, I mean,
- 53:04Speaker 4: I don't. I have to say, I don't know what
- 53:05Speaker 4: I'm expecting to see in an ota from Mac Jones.
- 53:07Speaker 4: It's gonna make me say, like, oh my gosh, he's
- 53:09Speaker 4: really made strides, but he has like he just looks
- 53:13Speaker 4: like the same guy to me, the same you know.
- 53:14Speaker 4: It's it's a couple throws downfield. There's a couple of
- 53:17Speaker 4: clunky plays, and you know, so when the pads come on,
- 53:20Speaker 4: when it gets serious, you get into joint practices and
- 53:22Speaker 4: all that, I think we'll have a better sense it.
- 53:24Speaker 4: I just I want to see some progress from him,
- 53:26Speaker 4: Like I just I don't really, I don't think there
- 53:27Speaker 4: is progress. No, I think the progress is between the ears.
- 53:30Speaker 4: And that's like the only way where you're not going
- 53:32Speaker 4: to see it.
- 53:32Speaker 6: It's the only source that you're gonna get it from.
- 53:34Speaker 6: Like the thing that's missing from from Mac, I think
- 53:38Speaker 6: for all of us, Like he can throw the ball
- 53:40Speaker 6: with touch and accuracy down the field like that the
- 53:43Speaker 6: one that we posted on Twitter to get SICKI and
- 53:45Speaker 6: you know, he had another one to Parker on the
- 53:47Speaker 6: back pylon where he just put it up on a
- 53:49Speaker 6: shelf for Parker, Like he can make those touch throws
- 53:52Speaker 6: down the field, but it's like, you know, the the
- 53:55Speaker 6: fifteen yard incut in between two defenders where he just
- 53:58Speaker 6: steps into it and drives it on the line. It's
- 54:01Speaker 6: the sideline out Like can he throw that ball without
- 54:04Speaker 6: air under it?
- 54:04Speaker 12: Like?
- 54:04Speaker 4: Can you throw it on a line?
- 54:06Speaker 6: And I don't know if that's ever gonna come for him,
- 54:08Speaker 6: Like I don't know if he's ever gonna have that
- 54:10Speaker 6: kind of arm talent. So you're just kind of hoping
- 54:13Speaker 6: that he's gonna be one step ahead mentally, right, and
- 54:15Speaker 6: that that's just kind of where he's at. But the
- 54:17Speaker 6: one thing I want to throw out there about the
- 54:19Speaker 6: offensive line without Mike on Winnie out there these couple
- 54:23Speaker 6: of weeks, they have obviously filled in with a bunch
- 54:26Speaker 6: of different guys. I don't think Bill Murray is a
- 54:28Speaker 6: real thing, but like Antonio Mafi, Jake Andrews, maybe the
- 54:31Speaker 6: guys that they drafted, maybe maybe on one who's a tackle.
- 54:36Speaker 6: You know, I don't really love that doing that, Like
- 54:40Speaker 6: I think that he's better off at guard. But if
- 54:43Speaker 6: you kick him out back outside the tackle and you
- 54:45Speaker 6: use one of you know, Antonio Mafi like, you can
- 54:47Speaker 6: hide tackles our guards. Excuse me, you know that you can.
- 54:51Speaker 6: You can open David Andrews to his side, you can slide,
- 54:54Speaker 6: you can do all sorts of things to help out
- 54:56Speaker 6: a guard, maybe on one who kicks back out to tackle.
- 54:59Speaker 6: Now you're only worrying about one tackle spot. In between
- 55:02Speaker 6: Trent Brown and Riley Reef and Connor McDermott and Calvin Anderson,
- 55:06Speaker 6: you should be able to find one left tackle.
- 55:11Speaker 4: Connor McDermott's a better right tackle than Michael and when
- 55:13Speaker 4: you like, I struggle to see that just with the
- 55:15Speaker 4: power on when you has and I also was just wondering,
- 55:18Speaker 4: you know, what do you think that would do for
- 55:19Speaker 4: him going into a free agency year where he now
- 55:21Speaker 4: is going to go back to tackle.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Is That's another good point, Mike, because you know how
- 55:25Speaker 3: much I think that was an enormous part of the
- 55:28Speaker 3: equation last year, was the fact that the two tackles
- 55:32Speaker 3: had their noses bent out of joint when they switched sides.
- 55:35Speaker 3: You know, and for the exact reason that you're talking about,
- 55:37Speaker 3: when was a left tackle going into his free agency
- 55:40Speaker 3: here and they moved them to right. Trent Brown signed
- 55:44Speaker 3: as a right tackle and they made him a left tackle.
- 55:47Speaker 3: And I do I can I put a hand on
- 55:49Speaker 3: a bible and tell you that this was no. But
- 55:51Speaker 3: I think both of those guys were upset about it.
- 55:53Speaker 6: I just think it's I don't want to move Mike
- 55:57Speaker 6: out to tackle, just because I think when you have
- 55:59Speaker 6: a core back like Mac Jones, the depth of the
- 56:02Speaker 6: pocket is more important than the with because he's got
- 56:04Speaker 6: to be able to step up in the pocket. So
- 56:06Speaker 6: having those three guys sturdy in the interior is probably
- 56:10Speaker 6: better for his style of play. But if you're really
- 56:14Speaker 6: really deficient there at tackle, he's probably the best tackle
- 56:17Speaker 6: on your roster not named Trent Brown, and you kick
- 56:21Speaker 6: him out, you put Mafia in at guard, And how
- 56:25Speaker 6: much do you really drop off? If at all?
- 56:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Tim and at Duncan, our friends at Duncan says
- 56:31Speaker 2: Fred's correct. The best games are ones that the Patriots
- 56:34Speaker 2: win by a lot. They get a lead early and
- 56:37Speaker 2: continue to build on throughout the game. Love those days.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Hopefully they'll be back soon. I have a good feeling
- 56:43Speaker 2: about getting Hopkins signed. I heard a report on the
- 56:46Speaker 2: radio today that Robert Kraft is all for it. You
- 56:49Speaker 2: think that's true. If so, I have confidence they will
- 56:52Speaker 2: get the money right to sign him. Think I didn't
- 56:56Speaker 2: hear that, But I didn't hear it.
- 56:57Speaker 4: But I can understand why you. Why would mister I
- 57:01Speaker 4: heard bring excitement put in.
- 57:03Speaker 3: I've heard more speculation posed as facts on this whole
- 57:08Speaker 3: situation than I can remember on really any situation.
- 57:11Speaker 2: And last thing, my first disagreement with Evan, and it
- 57:14Speaker 2: has nothing to do with football. To say that Chris
- 57:17Speaker 2: Stapleton is a nietzsche artist with an overrated anthem is
- 57:21Speaker 2: easily the worst take. Chris Stapleton is a great artist
- 57:24Speaker 2: with a great.
- 57:25Speaker 6: No one knows Christleton is. First of all. First of all,
- 57:30Speaker 6: First of all, Chris Stapleton is fine, let's not let's
- 57:33Speaker 6: calm down. Second of all, people need to realize that,
- 57:36Speaker 6: like when I'm messing with Barth, it's I'm messing with
- 57:38Speaker 6: bart right, like.
- 57:39Speaker 4: That I wanted to catch twenty two things.
- 57:42Speaker 2: It's yes, okay, all right, We're going to take a
- 57:46Speaker 2: break from fret here. We'll be right back after this.

- 1:07:55Speaker 2: the email address. Alex and fall River writes in two questions, One, Evan,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: did you ever listen to PFW back when you were
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: working for clinics, And did you have familiarity with the
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: guys back then?
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean not religiously, because I'm you know, I
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: think we're all in the same boat.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: That we don't have a life.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: We don't read it done of content or listen to

- 1:08:15Speaker 2: But sure, and does the cast prefer the old name

- 1:08:21Speaker 2: always have a saft spot in my heart for PFW
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: in Progress. I kind of like that better too. Yeah.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: I still call a PFW in progress all the time.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: PU in progress. It's always been PU to me.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: So yeah too.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: You have your uniform on today?
- 1:08:35Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: I did. Thank you. You can call Matt Morel for one.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: Maybe maybe I'll ship it to you. Maybe you'll get it.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Name year, Josh and Turner's falls. Any chance you could
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: give Matt a mobile camera and have him walk around
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: the stadium and maybe get a d hop sighting. But
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: in all seriousness, if Hopkins doesn't sign with the Patriots
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: now or later, do you think the Patriots need an
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: upgrade of some kind at the skill position? Maybe Cook
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: not my choice, but a name thrown around at Paul
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: shows a Denver receiver free agent trade. Bueller would love
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: to hear your guys opinions and maybe a name that
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: might be a realistic option.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: You yeah, running, I would say they need somebody. I
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: just I don't know, I don't know where. I mean,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: those ones kind of come out of nowhere, you know,
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: I mean, that might be the kind of thing where
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: you gotta wait till the trade deadline and you have
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: to wait till someone's ready to eLOAD a Mohammed Sanu.
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: But that's it, you know, that's that's where the options
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: come from.
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: You know, it's definitely it feels like trade for.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Travis and West Virginia continues his feud with Paul Paul.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Did you hear Einstein Allen's press conference on Tuesday? This
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: is an actual quote from him. I'm just trying to
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: talk and listen at the same time. Sometimes when you
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: look dopey and speak dopey, it means you're actually dopey.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: But feel free to keep marveling at his intellect.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Jeez, wow, Can I just say you've never heard that
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: phrase before. You need to have the ability to talk
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: and listen at the same time. Sometimes you can't just
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: be all about you.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I've heard that phrase.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: I've heard you have two ears in one mouth, so
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: I've heard that as well, twice as much as you speak.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: I've heard that as well, Scott Pioli, and thank you
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: for sharing that with us. The other thing is, by
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: the way, I've never met Josh Allen, so I'm not
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: telling you about his intellect. I have no idea what
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: I have no idea what his IQ is. I have
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: no idea what kind of student he was or what
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: books much. Yeah, I'm saying he plays more often than
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: not like a quarterback who understands what he's doing. He reads,
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: he reads defenses very well. In my opinion, I think
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: when he gets in trouble he's trying to do too
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: much physically to extend to play. Not because I didn't
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: read the man, I just got fooled in that coverage.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: I don't see that a lot.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: I was just there's an example that he's dumb. I
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: don't I don't know how this even became a thing.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: He plays for a team in the division. I would
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: just I would say, pretty simple, what would you say,
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: how much did they throw? How much did Steve Belichick
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: throw at Josh Allen over the last couple of years
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: and turns kitchen the drink. So and that's why I
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: just like keep.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Once with the aid of a ninety mile wind, they
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: were able to keep him under check.
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: That's why I just keep coming back to with the secondary.
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: And what makes me feel excited optimistic is I think
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: they have better players in the secondary now. And I
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: don't think you can beat Josh Allen with smoke and mirrors.
- 1:11:27Speaker 6: I think you just have to be better than Buffalo,
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: and you line up against Buffalo, you just need to
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: have the horses to line up against them.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: And even when you have the right call and you
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: disrupt him, he extends to play and he still be too.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: Well, that stupid touchdown he had last year like one
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: foot out of bounds and then just like rifled it across.
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: I think that's like what with him in particular. I
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: think that's what has given them so much trouble. Is
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: they might spin it on him and he might hold
- 1:11:52Speaker 6: the ball for a second, but they can't get him
- 1:11:54Speaker 6: on the ground. So then all of a sudden it
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: becomes school yard. And he's okay with it becoming school yard.
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: So once it once the play breaks down, now he's
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: a whole another play.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: That's what they say.
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: All the time. It's like two plays against him. It's
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: the initial play and then it's like the secondary play,
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: and that's where he beats them.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: And I would say without question that both like a
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: guy like Mahomes and Josh Allen, what Evan just said
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: is the biggest reason for their success. You just have
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: a physical gift that most guys don't like. You can
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: be smart, you can be dumb. If you're that physically talented,
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: you're gonna find a way to make some plays. But
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: you can't do what they do and be dumb and
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: play dumb all the time. Now that throat that you're
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: talking about, the one in the Thursday Night game where
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: mac Wilson had him on the sideline, that just as
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: easily can be an example of what I'm talking about.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: When he gets in trouble, he's extending the play. Instead
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: of pulling the plug, he throws one across his body
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: and a.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: Guy picks it off.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: It happened to him a lot last year, but he
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: had some red zone turnover problems last year, so sometimes
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: he tries to do too much. I just think it's again,
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: you're just trying to you know, put down the other
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: guys in the division.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Well, I think, to me, the question isn't about his
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: football smarts. It's about his off field like life, the
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: type of girl friends and things like that.
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: I'm really on I'm really hoping that Haley comes.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: I think that's absolutely a concern. If you're Buffalo, I
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: don't dismiss it at all. You know, much like Tom
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Brady in the first I don't know fifteen years of
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: his career. Yeah, yeah, uh.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Nikody from West Virginia's is that like nikhil n Coody?
- 1:13:35Speaker 17: Honestly, I wouldn't know. Just my mother wanted to be different. Okay, nice, Hey,
- 1:13:42Speaker 17: guys doing today?
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: Good?
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: Great grand So this.
- 1:13:45Speaker 17: Question isn't about this year, but when Bill decides to
- 1:13:50Speaker 17: retire or get fired, if that ever happened. We have
- 1:13:55Speaker 17: projections on who would be the next head coach, but
- 1:13:58Speaker 17: I haven't heard any projects on them. Who would be
- 1:14:00Speaker 17: the next GM? You guys happen to have any thoughts
- 1:14:03Speaker 17: on who would be the next GM?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: I don't know. It depends on how much Craft likes
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: matc Grow mad Grow. You know, if Kraft likes him,
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: then it could be Matt Grow do you.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Think he would set it up more traditionally with a
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: with a GM and a coach.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Certainly if if the if the next head coach is
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: either Gerard Mayo or Bill O'Brien.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: Let's say, because Bill O'Brien's been both.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Up, I think I think at first Craft would have
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: a GM.
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I have no idea the answer to either one
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: of those questions.
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: It's a good one. Is that an owner decision whether
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: or not to have a coach and a GM or
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: is it I mean, yeah, that's that's his choice.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Of course it is, of course it is. I Now,
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: if you if you hire somebody with a high profile,
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: like a Parcels or a Bellet, well, at Belichick it
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: not at the time, but if you hire a high
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: profile coach, sometimes they demand that I need to run
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: the ship. You can have a GM all you want,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: but I have final say, and that's the terms that
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: you hire the person under.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: But Belichick got that when he got here. Yeah, I'm
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: trying to think.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: No, Yeah, I mean Andy Wazachuk was here, but he
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: was more of the capologist type guy.
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: When he got when he huh, when did Peoli come in?
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: He came in with par with Belichick, but Belichick had
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: final say from day one.
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: He got it.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: Bobby Greer stayed on through the draft, which is a
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: very common practice around the league when that happens. After
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: the draft, he was fired. Peoli was the quote.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: Unquote general manager from day one, but he didn't have
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: final say.
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: No final say in the ninety year, finals say in
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: the fifty three.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Or both anything.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: I would agree with Andy got it.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, now did they butt heads, Yeah, they
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: they disagreed, but Bill had final say.
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: I think that's just the biggest thing. Like I don't
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: necessarily care about the titles, but whoever is running the
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: personnel department, whether it's director of player Personnel like mac
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: ros title or GM, like, do you have the conviction
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: to stand up to the guy that has the final
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: saying and be like, no, we're this is this is
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: not the right decision, Like we're not drafting this guy,
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: We're drafting that guy. Like that that I think is
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: is I just you gotta have that.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: I just think if there's one thing I've learned over
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: the last few years, it's just how vital the draft
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: is and how those picks are just everything, and it's
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: unfortunate how it all works that, you know, certain teams
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: stink and then they get really good players. But it's
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: just it's everything for this franchise going forward.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Ryan and Tampa writes in quick question for you all,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: if the Patriots signed d Hop, what would mac Jones
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: need to do this season for you to consider giving
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: him the fifth year option? For example? In my eyes,
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: oh sorry, no, Cody, Yeah, I forgot he was there.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: For example, in my eyes, he'd need to have around
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: forty two hundred yards, twenty five touchdowns to ten interceptions.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Would two or more come from behind the games ceiling
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: fourth quota drives. If you can't produce that, I don't
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: think you can comfortably consider him your quarterback of the future.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: What are your thoughts?
- 1:17:04Speaker 6: Definitely giving him the fifth year option.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: If he plays the whole year, he's going to get
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: the fifty year option. And it like for me anyway, Yeah,
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: because that means he didn't do anything to lose the job.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Bill didn't think. I mean, I guess it could be
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: like a Cam Newton year where everybody thought he should
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: have lost the job, but he never did. I suppose
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: that's possible. I don't think that will happen. If he
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: doesn't play well, I think Bill will make a change.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: And if he plays all seventeen games and it's not
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: a disaster, I think he'll get The fifty year option
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: is just too affordable, right, I.
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: Mean that's a big It's a better question is the
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: contract extension because the fifth year option is I mean,
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: why not, like you have team control over a quarterback
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: at an affordable price like there's He would really have
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: to have the bottom fallout from underneath him to not
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: get the fifth year option.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: Mitch in Albany still hasn't received his T shirt.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: I think he's just busting them on.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: You know, you know what you need to do. You
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: got to turn your mic on first show.
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: It was just routed differently because.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: I was gonna say, you send it with signature required
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: so that you know and.
- 1:18:12Speaker 9: You know the priority mailed, flat rate prepackaged stuff.
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: All you got to do is put it in the mail.
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: Sure it doesn't need a stamp.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pre stamp.
- 1:18:20Speaker 9: I don't know about flat ray envelope one ray anyway.
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: The post office, like we got a bunch of his
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: T shirts in here, like they're not stamped.
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: The whole post offices hers in the UK.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: She let us all know.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: Uh Lee in Malvern, UK. Speaking of the UK, see
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Mike is wearing his.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: Fox post officers walking around with Patriots.
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: On filter shirts. I see Mike wearing his Patriots Unfiltered
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: T shirt that looks at fantastic design, so well done
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: whoever produced that. I'm hopeful for the upcoming season, but
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: as a fan, I'm always excited to see the players return.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: I'm concerned that again the majority of doubts seems to
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: be on the offensive side, but I can't root again
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: It's my team and I respect and rely on Patriots
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Unfiltered to give an honest assessment of what you've seen.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: How long do you think it will take to finally
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: determine if MAC has what it takes after what seemed
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: a wasted year last season? How long will it take?
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: How long will you be able to say mid year, okay.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: About a year and keep MAC a year and a half.
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: I still just go back to the same thing that
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: I keep going, like, what what's your your judgment of
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: what it takes? Like, I just it depends on what
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: you're what you want you have to see it? Yeah,
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: Like do you want them to be, you know, an
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: MVP candidate or do you just want to be Kirk
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: Cousins Like I I don't know, like that that's to
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: each their own at that point.
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: Yeah, you know when you see it. I just I
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: don't think any of it can really be determined like
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: in training camp or in joint practices, Like, I don't
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: think anything is really going to convince anybody that he's
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: like turned a corner, that he's excelled. Like it has
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: to happen in the games, and I mean it's everybody
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: wants like what's the stat line? And I just I
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: go back to how does the team look, does the
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: team get behind him, are they able to perform and
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: when when all the pressure is on, or they able
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: to pull some wins out? Like those are the things
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: that I've been missing. I haven't been like, man, if
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: we just had a five thousand yard passer, we'd be fine.
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: Like you need to be able to win games, and
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: you know, especially in this league, it's so hard and
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: there's so many good teams that when you have a
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: chance to close a team out, you have to do it.
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: And they haven't been able to do it on either
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: side of the ball.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: For a couple.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: I can almost guarantee that when this season plays out
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: and unfolds and we're talking to the offseason next year,
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: there's gonna be just as many people saying you gotta
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: give him the fifty air option as there will be
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: saying there's no way I would give him the fifty
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: air option. It's just I can't imagine. But all of
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: a sudden, he's gonna go out there and throw you know,
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: eleven touchdowns and sixteen interceptions, and it's gonna be blatantly obvious.
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: Or thirty three touchdowns and five interceptions. It's gonna be
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: blatantly obvious. It's gonna be somewhere in the middle where
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: there's going to be you know, wild opinions on both sides.
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: It's just the question of where the numbers come, like
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: a what point did the interceptions come to the quarter?
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: It's going to happen, but you know, or stretch like like.
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: I've been, you know, obviously very critical in questioning, and
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: I'm always going to point it out. Yeah, yeah, it
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: was great against the Colts, you know, and then someone
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: who has been very positive on him is going to say,
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: you know, how can you turn him down? I mean,
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: look at you know, sixty nine you know percent completions,
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: you know, forty two hundred yards, and they're going to
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: point to that, you know the ep.
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: EPA, there you go.
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: I mean, look at the I mean the only guy
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: in the league. I mean, he's the second best quarterback
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: in football.
- 1:21:41Speaker 6: If you extrapolate a week nine from week sixteen, Paul,
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: I mean, he's the third best quarterback in football exactly.
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: In scoring points in those weeks. But hey when his own.
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: It's expected points, fake points.
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: Right right, They're great. They're great in the expect against
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: much like they never lost a game that they didn't play, and.
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: Do they have upa unexpected points at it, Like we
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: didn't even realize we were gonna get those points. I'll
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: bet you Mahomes is high on that list.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Be in Brooklyn. I obviously love to have d Hot,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: but kind of like the way the offense is set
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: up now. Two outside guys and Parker and Thornton, two
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: inside guys and born Juju, two very solid tight ends
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: and a great running back. I don't know if I
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: want to get rid of Parker because we'd have a
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: lack of outside guys. But I don't want to get
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: rid of Bourn because he's very good with Mac and
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: has been a great patriot.
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: A lot of really goods and greats for guys that.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: Ever haven't really done nothing.
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: I'm not even I'm not even going to talk about
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: necessarily the caliber of players that we're talking about. Why
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: if you swapped Hopkins for Parker, does that disrupt the
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: inside outside that right?
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Every team has two outside guys and two you know
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: how good they are, but that's Hopkins. That's how good
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: they are.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: And that's why people think that maybe in I guess
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: we didn't really talk about this. Parker was kind of
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: sort of icy icy good good word yes when asked
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: about Hopkins, because I think that he's he's a veteran
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: and he understands that it potentially could could put him
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: in jeopardy at least his role.
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: You know, Evan, didn't you say you saw something? Maybe
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: they should use DeAndre Hopkins kind of like Julian Edelman, stop.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: It Cody in Indiana. I don't really understand that. I
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: don't really understand why everyone says if we signed the
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: hop who gets cut. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it, but
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: didn't basically, didn't we basically lose two receivers in the
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: offseason and only sign one. We lost Jacobe and only
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: signed Juju. Yes, do we still not have an open spot.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: I know we're hoping one of the late round picks
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: can stick, but still I don't understand why signing Hopkins
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: means we have to move on from Parks or Born.
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: It doesn't mean you.
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: Have It just means that I like we've said in
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: the past, it is Parker or Boorn gonna sit on
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: the sideline and never play and be happy about that.
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: Like those two guys deserve to play like their their
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: NFL caliber receivers that should be playing somewhere. So it's
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: more about like malcontents than.
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: Like like last year you had the guys that you
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: just talked about. And you know, first of all, you
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: started off first whatever mini games, four games. I think
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: Thornton was on. IR didn't play at all. Agalow was
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: a bigger part of the offense early on. Boorne was
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: non existent. Then you know, agaloa sort of fell out
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: of favor with the turnovers. He had a couple of
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: balls go off his hands that were picked. He had
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: a fumble, a big foble against Baltimore, so he kind
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: of fell out. Like to Evan's point, you're gonna end
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: up with somebody upset at least one person last year.
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: Out last year, I think Agalore and Bourne were upset
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: at various times, and like I said, a quarter of
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: that you didn't even have Thornton. So yeah, you don't
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: have to get rid of one of those guys.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: It's born that would be mine.
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: I think there's a chance of that, but you don't
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: have to, Like, no, you can keep You're going to
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: keep five receivers. I don't think a lot of teams
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: have five receivers that you actually we'll think we'll.
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: Play a big role on offense.
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: Usually like you get down a little bit and it's
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: a guy that might be able to be a return
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: guy or scheduled to Mario.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: Well, that's what I was just going to bring up,
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: which is probably a good point to just bring up
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: that Booty wasn't even out there for for mandatory mini
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: camp and and you really didn't see anything out of
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: out of pop as I as I've learned, he likes
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: to be called you know, there was it was the
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: it was the other guys that were forty four. I
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: can't remember his name, but it's like the team I
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: got a block, I got a block on the rally
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: web name, but it was you know, it was the
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Malie cunninghams. Is the ed Lea's Like those were the
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: guys in the opera.
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: Camp, I think. But it was like Trey Nixon last year,
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: only not downfield.
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: But you'll notice, I mean, I would say generally, I
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: don't know, maybe there's somebody out there doing a roster
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: projection with Malie Cunningham on it, but like I don't, like,
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: I'm not going to bang the table for any of
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: those any of those low rate ranking receivers. So you know,
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: by that token, I think, yeah, it could just you
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: could just add de Hop and keep everybody. But it's
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: just disappointing because I think you want to keep adding
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: youth to this group, and we know there'll be some turnover.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: I think Borne is a free agent this year regardless
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: if you cut Parker is too, so you know you've
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: got real long term needs at that position. So ideally
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: one of those kids would pop and then maybe you
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: could move on from somebody who's a lame duck.
- 1:26:14Speaker 6: Pop pop.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: There you go, Uh, Jean and Ottawa. I've been a
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: long time listener to enjoy the show. You guys do
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: a great job too quick requests. First, I'm hoping you'll
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: bring back the three points with Perillo video future you
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: used to have remember that. I think we didn't. You
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: used to do it like from the bowl we'd sit
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: you in.
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: Oh, we did it in countless places. But yes, we've
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: done many. From one in the bathroom, shrew it up
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: in one of the suits. We did it in the
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: inside the bowl, we did it the Hall of Fame.
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: We've done it a lot of I think.
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: That would be good. We put paulam in a stall
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: and he just talks. You don't see him, you just
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: hear him home like no one's and then at the
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: end of the piece you hear the flush. I think.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: I think it's a good button. I love it. Yeah,
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: I appreciate the love though.
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: Thank you also with all to do your job. Videos
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: produced by the Patriots. How about doing one featuring Pu
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: and your whole group.
- 1:27:13Speaker 6: It's not that exciting, that's no.
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: Well, you never know.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: We could do one and we could sit around and say,
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: why don't we do a feature on it? Well, they
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: won't let us do that.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, right, Oh, we could do one on like you know,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: the amazing arguments we have about the Celtics.
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: That would have been good content.
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: That would have been just to burn it off and then.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: We'd have to like censor it while the f bombs
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: were flying.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: Well, it was nice if there was something to argue about,
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: like I feel like part of this team. It's been
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: hard to like really get into disagreements because you know,
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: they haven't been all that good. It's a kind of
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: an you know, it's hard to be like.
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: Well, you think it's hard now, at least now there's
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: like positives and negatives. When Iny and I used to
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: do this when they were going fourteen to two, that's
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: when Bill O'Brien used to make fun of us. I
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: don't know how you got do it? You find something that.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: I miss those days where you know, I was the
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: one saying, hey, I think they're pretty good, and Paul
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: and Andy would argue with.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: Me like, like they'll be lucky to make it the
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: super Bowl with the lead a championship.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: We really had to try hard to come up with something.
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: But again it was always the disclaimer, assuming that they're
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: gonna win at least twelve games and whether or not
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: they're hosting the AFC Championship game. That's what these concerns
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: have to do with, Like whether or not the fourth
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: string tackle was good enough in case two guys got hurt,
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: Like that's what Those are the things.
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: The center right now, we're like, who's our first string?
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: Those are the guys.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: Those are the things we used to argue about.
- 1:28:41Speaker 9: Uh.
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: Philippe in Rio de Janeiro love the summer coverage of
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: the team. How does Juju's injury impact the evaluation of
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: this team's decision to acquire him instead of keeping Jacobe
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: Meyers A good question.
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't have the answer, but question chairpoint.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: I mean, the the only right side I could say
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: about Juju was at least he was here, like he
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: wasn't like I mean, he wasn't here when they went
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Kansas City went to the White House. But he was here.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: He's here for minicamp. He just wasn't on the field,
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: you know, So it's not like he's not here.
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: Right and he is in meetings, and I think Lawrence
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: Guy is the only guy that was.
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: We did also see some of the photos from the
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: practices that we were not invited to He was at
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: least in one picture, so he I think they he
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: was out there maybe, but yeah, I don't know much
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: about his situation, but it sounds like Taekwon was was
- 1:29:31Speaker 6: really just playing it safe. In the spring.
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: Phelipe says, I'm ready to go ahead and take an
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: early shot at the decision one I was not on
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: board from at the start. Jujus is marginally better than
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Jacoby at best and has an injury issue that prevented
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: him from joining the team for midiicamp on his first
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: season with the team, So Philip put Philip down for
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: not liking the decision.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: I mean, I think it'll be an interesting one to
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: kind of watch because, like I've said many many times,
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: Jacoby always produced, whether he was Tom Brady, Cam Newton.
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: You know, he wasn't the biggest needle mover on the offense,
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: but he knew what he was doing. He was reliable,
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: he always spoke always, you know, had had good not
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: I would say good things, but you know, it was
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: always willing to talk and gave honest answers. And you
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: know it's it's it's gonna be hard for Juju to
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: top what Jacob the guy Jacoby was off the field.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: I think he can top him on the field, but
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: I got to see and Jacoby was, you know, until
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: this year. He got hurt a bunch, but he didn't consistent.
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: And that's why I've always called it a wash. Is
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: not because I didn't think like Juju Smith Schuster, whatever
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: year I think it was eighteen, whatever year it was,
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: he had a year that Jacoby Myers is not capable of.
- 1:30:43Speaker 6: Ye eighteen.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: He's like when he came into the league with a
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: higher level of talent than Jacoby Myers had because he
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: was a receiver. The injuries to me have evened it
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: in my in my opinion. Now some people still think
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: it's fine. I'm not gonna split hers, but that's that's
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: that's the big concern for me is did he ever
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: get that explosiveness back?
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: Yeah? You know, can he run like?
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: Can he run like?
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: And that's what makes him better than Jacoby, you know,
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: like those things with the ball like that Jacob didn't
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: really have, Like he get in the right spot. But
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: he's you know, he's not going to turn a ten
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: or twelve yard completion into like a thirty forty yard
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: scoring play unless he's throwing the way.
- 1:31:21Speaker 6: I honestly think that that's what it came down to,
- 1:31:23Speaker 6: which we talked about in March, was just this Bill
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: O'Brien offense, and what Bill O'Brien is all about is
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: catch and run, Like he wants guys that can catch
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: and run the football, you know, hit him over the
- 1:31:34Speaker 6: middle of the field and pick up go from an
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: eight yard slamt be turning into a twenty yard game.
- 1:31:40Speaker 6: And that just wasn't Jacoby's game. I just think from
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: a skill set perspective, he Juju fits better with the
- 1:31:47Speaker 6: style of offense that they want to play. But he's
- 1:31:49Speaker 6: got to be out there obviously. So it's a good question.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: Uh. Doctor James, who's our resident cartoonist, says, I know
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: that you guys, especially evanly influenced by the newer statistical tools,
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: it's really important. But today you all talked about clutch
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: plays and that made me want to ask a question
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: that has been on my mind for a while. To
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: what extent do you rate the importance of these intangible
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: or immeasurable factors like clutch or gamer or locker room guy.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: How much of what's important in football is this quantifiable stuff.
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: Yea fourth quarter comebacks. I mean that's a you know,
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: QB stat hashtag.
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: But I give Evan credit because a lot of Evans
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: fellow stat nerds do not believe in clutch, do not
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: believe in it.
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: They think they don't believe in momentum either, you know,
- 1:32:40Speaker 6: as that.
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: At bats and the same as in the third ding
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: and you know, plays in the fourth quarter, the same
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: as those in the A lot of I'm not making
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: that up. A lot of analytically driven people do not
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: believe in that.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Don't tell me there's no such thing as momentum. I
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: saw the twenty eight three game. I mean, do not
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: ever tell me there's no such thing as momentum.
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: So you saw that?
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: What was that?
- 1:33:03Speaker 8: Like?
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: I mean, it's anyone that saw that and says, oh,
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: momentum is not a real thing, then that was it?
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: That was it right there?
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: It might be like harder to like David Ortiz's grand
- 1:33:17Speaker 6: slam against the Tigers in the ALCS, one of the
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: clutches of clutch moments in the history of sports, Like
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: you're telling me that that wasn't like a thing.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: And got him? Is he's done? He did it.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: A lot right, you know, they're.
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: Down four runs in the ALCS and he hits a
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: grand Slam to tie the game and like the eighth
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: and eighth.
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: But what happens is the guys that pushed back on this,
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: And I've heard a lot of conversations about this, and
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: it's something that really sticks in my head.
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: You know, they'll they'll point to the numbers that don't
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: back that up. You know, like Derek Jeter has always
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: been considered a clutch player, but if you look at
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: his his overall numbers, they're not really any better in
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: the postseason than they are. That's not the point. It's
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: not it's not how you it's not what we're.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: Talking about the situation.
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: It's like, like Evin talks about with David Oatiz, there
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: were very very rare times when you really need a
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: hit here that he didn't come through. Now, no one,
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: you know, comes through every time. But when you have
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: a guy like, in my opinion, if a guy's a
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: three hundred hitter in baseball and he hits three hundred
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: with basis loaded two outs in the ninth inning, that's
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: far more impressive. Like to say that that's the same
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: as the regular season is wrong. Because it's much harder
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: in the second scenario than it is the first. And
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: the same thing with the fourth quarter, like you well,
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: you know, his passer rating is really no better in
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: the fourth quarter while trailing than it is in the
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: first quarter.
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: But it's enormously different. The defense is a playing If
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: the defense is coming after.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: You, you have like if you would throw one incipley pass,
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: the games over like that, that whole Tom Brady comeback,
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: Like one time they have to punt in the fourth
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: quarter of the game's over or turn it over on
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: fourth on downs because obviously they wouldn't.
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: He had to score every single time. You don't think
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: that's harder to perform in than regular time.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: And on the game tying drive in that game against
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: the Falcons, Brady was under pressure. I mean they were
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: hitting him. He was standing in the brora taking the
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: hit and and to me, that's clutch, that's mental. He
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: didn't let it get to him. You know, some guys
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: have it and others don't, so you can.
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: Play the same. So there's nothing that you could point to. Well,
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: you know it really is. It really doesn't change, that's
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: the point. Like Joe Montana, he never changed when it
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: was the Super Bowl, he played the same as he did.
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: In every Young Candy. You know.
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: That's that to me, is an enormous intangible that can't
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: be quantified.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: I feel a little biased, but I kind of feel
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: like hockey and I maybe would say baseball too, are
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: sports that are very conducive to momentum because there's such
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: a float to those games. And it does. I do
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: think it exists in football too, but you know, it
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: gets a lot more broken up where you have like
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: our special teams and then we're gonna kick an extra
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: point and then we've got to kick off and you know,
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: so it's a little hard to maintain it. But I
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: I mean, you guys could probably speak a little bit better
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: to basketball, but I just, you know, know, playing refing hockey,
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: like there are just times where you're like, we're up
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: against it right now, like you know, and and it
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: can change in the blink of an eye. Like I
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: don't think that it's a thing where like we're really struggling,
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: like it only takes once one little play to shift momentum.
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: But I firmly believe in the people.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Call a lot of this stuff intangibles. I think it's
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: all tangible. I think it's all tangible. Well, I mean,
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: it's you know.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: Tangible about it.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: You can like you can tell a guy who's clutch,
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: like he shows you over and over, Like you don't
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: earn clutch until you've done it many times. But once
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: you've done that's tangible. Like this guy's clutch. Larry Bird
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: is a clutch player.
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: No, but what I'm saying is you don't know that
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: guy hazard until you see him do it right. That's
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: why it's in intangible. You can't quantify it heading into
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: till afterwards. Yeah, now you can say he was clutching
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: those games, right. And it's the same thing like if
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: you start off your career and you fail in a
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: lot of those spots, you get that knock that you
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: don't come through in the clutch. But if you if
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: you start off the you know, like Alex Rodriguez is
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: a guy who was always bashed in baseball because he
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: never did it when it counted well, and then all
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: of a sudden in two thousand and nine, he had
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: an unbelievable postseason when the Yankees. You know, younger folks
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: might not remember the Yankees last one in the world series.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: It's quite a while ago two thousand.
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: And nine they were also juice.
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: Well, I mean the whole league was juiced then, just
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: the Yankees. But so does that mean that he had
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: it all along?
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: No Price a great example, but Derek Jeter's over.
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: But then, like, how about the example of Tom Brady who,
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: like his first Super Bowl, he executes like gave him
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: a chame winning drive and you know, and then it
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: was like it was just on with him. I mean,
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: then he did it again and O three like he
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: had it.
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: So now if he doesn't come through with the game
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: on the line on a certain time, no one's gonna
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: call him a choker because he's done it.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: Because he's done it, you know.
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: What I'm saying, whereas the guy who chokes all Like,
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: no one would say that a Rod is a clutch player.
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: I certainly wouldn't.
- 1:37:54Speaker 6: I wouldn't say Derek Jeter was a clutch player.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: Well, that's just that's Josh Allen esque, right, Actress, I
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: wouldn't say that a Rod is a clutch player. He
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: was incredibly clutched once, yeah, But but I wouldn't say
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: that that diminished, you know, that that overshadows the rest
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: of his career. What he had many opportunities to perform
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: in big spots and didn't come through, like.
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: You know, like Edelman, a ridiculously Edelman and Welker. So
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: many of the players came on third down when you
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: knew it was going obviously we're going to have to pass,
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: and they still made.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: The play, but Welker.
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: But this is why Welker is not in our Hall
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: of Fame, right.
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: Because of that one yeah play, which I still say
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: he's a clutch player, right, I still say he's a
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: clutch play.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: Of course he was. But again, it's intangible.
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's tangible.
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: I believe it's tangible because you're basically go on what
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: you see, which is the very definition of to be fair.
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: Seven.
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: We can we can quantify some of it at this point. Yeah,
- 1:38:56Speaker 6: you can quantify some of it.
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is a guy's performance is unaffected
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: by the situation. No, I get that, That's what I'm talking, right,
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: But I can tell you.
- 1:39:04Speaker 6: I can tell you, like what Tom Brady's passer rating
- 1:39:07Speaker 6: is in a one score game in the fourth quarter
- 1:39:09Speaker 6: versus Aaron Rodgers is passer rating in a one score
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: game in the fourth quarter, and let me tell you,
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: Tom Brady's is a lot better. Right, I can tell
- 1:39:16Speaker 6: you these things. I don't know if that does it
- 1:39:18Speaker 6: for you, but.
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: Right, but can you tell me how many catches Wes
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: Welker has in the fourth quarter of one score games
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: as opposed.
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: To like you know, like, so, do you call him
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: a choker or not? Like, yeah, I can, but you
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: think he's a choker?
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: No, but I can tell you but he's dropped to one.
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: Like that's my point, Like you don't know what's going
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: on at the particular time. I think that's The numbers
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: only tell you so much, right, because there's no context
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: behind them.
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: Colin writes in I've been enjoying, I've been drawing the
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: spring OTAs and what they bring. But any whisper of
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: struggling offense makes me nervous and causes my little hope
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: bubble to begin to shrink. I think with Gaseki we
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: have upgraded from nothing to something at tight end at
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: tight end two. But with why receiver, I feel really
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: nervous about going into the season with what we have. Lastly,
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: I'm feeling nervous about all the d hop talk, really
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: hoping it happens. But the longer it goes and the
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: more the media hypes it up into uh, in my opinion,
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: the less likely we are to sign him. We've seen
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: Bill make splash signings, but also a lot of low
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: balling top wide receiver talent. I fear that is where
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: we're heading. Question, if we don't get d hop are
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: there any other moves you can see us making?
- 1:40:31Speaker 10: No?
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: I mean they've got two roster spots open right now.
- 1:40:33Speaker 4: I mean we mentioned the tackle position, where I think
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: you just probably need more depth. I mean, I don't
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: know what else to tell you. The ideally you'd need
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: a starter, but I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:40:43Speaker 6: I think the week is to Tony Hopkins. Thing is
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: so rare because it's June sixteenth and DeAndre Hopkins is available,
- 1:40:50Speaker 6: Like that's this just doesn't happen, you know. So he's
- 1:40:54Speaker 6: kind of it like there's there's not going to be
- 1:40:56Speaker 6: another DeAndre Hopkins level player. I mean, I guess you
- 1:40:58Speaker 6: could say Dalvin Cook, but it's a separate position in
- 1:41:01Speaker 6: a whole different argument.
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: So I just know, waite deadline, wait till the trade deadline,
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: and then I mean that might be and then and
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: at that point, you're like, are we a team that
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: is at a crossroads and feel like we're a player
- 1:41:13Speaker 4: away from really making a push, And you know, is
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: it even does it even matter at that point to
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: make the trade?
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: George and Maryland rights in two things O seven, I
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: knew we were going to lose the Super Bowl when
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: the Giants beat the Packers. The way they played week
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: seventeen had me shook The twenty eleven super Bowl hurt
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: more from twenty ten Super Bowl hurt more from me?
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: I think he meant eleven. Yeah, and two, Evan, you
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: kind of threw out thirty five twenty eight. I don't
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: think any team is putting up thirty five points of
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: this defense this year.
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: Oh, I wouldn't think that. I think that's crazy talk.
- 1:41:47Speaker 6: Yeah, No, I wouldn't agree. Philly, Dallas, Kansas City, Buffalo.
- 1:41:52Speaker 6: I'm not telling you that any of those teams can
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: put up there.
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: I'm not going to tell you they're all going. But
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: so you're telling me like Christian Gonzales and key On
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: White in replace of Devin mccordy is gonna prevent all
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: the the thirty point games they allowed last year.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: I think it's it's just a matter of like what
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: it does. It's like, like Evan said, Christian Gonzales puts
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: people in the right place.
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: I understand that. I think they they I think it
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: makes I think they have a chance to be better
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: on defense, but that much better. Well, you're not going
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: to allow the best teams in the league.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: Score nobody Like, No, that's that's not reasonable.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: Well that's what you just suggested. No one's putting up
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: thirty five.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: On I didn't say that, Georgian Marrison.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: That's what this guy just said.
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: Yeah, five times last year they gave up thirty plus.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: Like five times. Yeah, so let's make that two times.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: And now you're playing a schedule that's twice as difficult.
- 1:42:47Speaker 6: But can we also like win a game thirty eight
- 1:42:50Speaker 6: thirty five? Like, is that that's an option?
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: I mean I got over thirty and they're like, well
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: that's it. We can't beat them. Now get over twenty five.
- 1:42:57Speaker 6: That's that's the magic number in the Mac Jones era,
- 1:43:00Speaker 6: twenty five points that they're like owing like thirteen or
- 1:43:03Speaker 6: something like that when the opponent scores more than twenty
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: five points.
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: Since Mac they toe twenty five six times last year.
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: I mean, it's just that's the problem. Like, okay, you
- 1:43:11Speaker 6: can top twenty five against you know, like Roy, like
- 1:43:14Speaker 6: the Bill, like the Bills game. Excuse me, the Browns
- 1:43:17Speaker 6: game when you just are you beat him by three touchdowns?
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: How many times over?
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: Twenty five? Five?
- 1:43:24Speaker 6: Two of the mom's happy stop it?
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: Yeah? Uh well the Ravens they got twenty six, which
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: I thought, you know, for a minute, was was they
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: were kind of going back and forth a little bit
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: with them.
- 1:43:34Speaker 18: There was a little it was a little pushback and
- 1:43:37Speaker 18: went yep, twenty nine against Detroit, thirty against Cleveland, twenty
- 1:43:42Speaker 18: six on Indy, twenty six on the Vikings, twenty seven
- 1:43:45Speaker 18: on the on the Cardinals.
- 1:43:47Speaker 6: And there was back and forth in Minnesota too, until
- 1:43:49Speaker 6: there wasn't you know, I mean that game was fourth quarter?
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: Yeah, the Cardinals. One was defensive.
- 1:43:54Speaker 6: Points Hunter Henry should scored, by the way, but beside.
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: Yeah, well how many of those were defensive points because Duggart.
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: They had a touchdown against the Cardinals, And would they
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: score against the Raiders twenty four?
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: Right? Uh yeah, Kyle Ramon and Tampa loving the PU shirt, Deuce,
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: who would you rather game one? Would you have been
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: more okay with the Panthers winning or the Heat Florida Panthers.
- 1:44:27Speaker 6: More okay, Florida Panthers.
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: I'm gonna say the Heat because I don't because I
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: have Bruce Cassidy.
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: No, because I just I don't like mine.
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: I would have said I was I don't like. Yeah,
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: I didn't want. I wasn't rooting for either one of them.
- 1:44:40Speaker 3: But I would have been more okay with the Heat
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: winning because I was rooting for Bruce Cassidy.
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: Why were you rooting for Bruce Cassid.
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: Because I like them. I thought he did a good
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: job as the pace.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: So you think he got done dirty here?
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: Not necessarily. I think in that league especially, I think
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: there's a shelf life and I think that had probably come.
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: I don't like the way they did it. I don't
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: like the way they allowed the players to dictated so
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: so blatantly. But I think you did a really good
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: job as the Bruins coach did, and I was rooting
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: for him to win. Does that I mean I was.
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: I assume that goes against you a fan boy, Prido, Yes,
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: like you you had a root against him because he
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: used to.
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: I mean it was remarkable. I'm always here five year
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: six they were, I mean, and they were always a
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: real good regular season. I mean they had their flameouts
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: and we you know, and it was always the secondary
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: scoring thing or Tuca you know, didn't quite come through
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: in the clutch like we were talking about. But so yeah,
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: team I looked at that.
- 1:45:31Speaker 6: I thought he was here for the Blackhawks Cup too,
- 1:45:33Speaker 6: but that was still clod Jillian. Yeah, so it was
- 1:45:36Speaker 6: one one cupp run in nineteen that they lost in
- 1:45:39Speaker 6: obviously game seven, But I.
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: Thought he was better than Clode even though Cloude had
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: more success or postseason success.
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: Yeah, this is really would you rather? But he says,
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: which AFC East opponent would you love to see have
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: a tragic meltdown that last five years?
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: Buffalo right now easily see that to me is Miami.
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: That's I hate Miami. I've always hated Miami. That's always
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: been the team in the division. I disliked the.
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: Moment, But to me, we'll watch them exactly why right now?
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: I got to see Don Shula on the sideline making
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: all the rules, you know, just completely dominating the league.
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean it's because Bills are so dominant now,
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: a meltdown for them would be a much, you know
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: to me.
- 1:46:21Speaker 6: To me, it's about Bill's mafia. I just don't like
- 1:46:25Speaker 6: the go go back into your little caves and be quiet,
- 1:46:30Speaker 6: all right.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: The thing about them that really irritated me is they
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: will go me three and thirteen and they were the same.
- 1:46:35Speaker 4: They're the same as they.
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: Are insufferable and and I have you know, the Twitter
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: friends you know with some of them, and I love
- 1:46:41Speaker 6: them all, but like they're their fandom is insufferable, and it's.
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: Unlike the Patriots.
- 1:46:47Speaker 6: No, it's insufferable because they are not the Patriots, right,
- 1:46:50Speaker 6: but they they act correct. They act like they have
- 1:46:53Speaker 6: a seat at the table. They haven't won a thing
- 1:46:56Speaker 6: with this era or ever like, and yet they act
- 1:46:59Speaker 6: like they they can talk.
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: They'll carry themselves like they've won a long.
- 1:47:02Speaker 6: Like they can talk smack to Patriots fans, it's like,
- 1:47:05Speaker 6: what are you talking about? Like you have not one
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: a single thing. Your your history is choking, Like that's
- 1:47:12Speaker 6: your history. You are four Super Bowls in a row,
- 1:47:16Speaker 6: losing all four of them, Like you know how hard
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: that is to lose all four?
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: I'd like keep losing. The new stadium goes bankrupt. They
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: moved to Toronto, Okay, that's a little bit.
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: Mean.
- 1:47:27Speaker 6: I just really don't like Phil's mafia.
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: The first time I ever saw Pete Carroll on the
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: sideline not chopping on his gum.
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: Finally, would you rather Bill gives up drafting but stays
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: as the coach or bring in a whole new regime.
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: Whole new regime, Yeah, a whole new region. You're not
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: gonna do that. Just you gotta divorce yourself with that idea,
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: Like it's it's all or nothing with him.
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: But in this scenario, the same coach I would. I
- 1:47:52Speaker 6: would co have Bill coach, Yeah.
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: But I just want to change with just like the
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: defensive side though.
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: That's what he's really good at.
- 1:47:59Speaker 4: Well, that's that's what excess. Somehow no one found no
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: somehow no one found any problem with that refreshed. I mean,
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: just like totally different guys I've been talking about on
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: your shows.
- 1:48:11Speaker 6: They've been talking about that all week.
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: Oh I know, I'm talking about the right like us
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: talking about our colleagues. That one slipped by everybody.
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: I know, we don't like talk about this stuff a ton,
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: But to me, out of all of the of the
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: jabs that back has ever taken at Bill that to
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: me was the biggest one of all of them publicly, but.
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: Do you agree, like in terms of the writers, no
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: one really made much of it.
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm surprised, biggest one by I would just I'm
- 1:48:38Speaker 6: glad this.
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: Came up, because this was another thing I wanted to
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: Obviously you high five to well.
- 1:48:43Speaker 10: No.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: I wanted to bring it up because I think, you know,
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: we talk all about how the offense, defense look and
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: all the things. I think that this team might have
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: an issue. They're still they're still thinking about last year,
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: and I think that there's so much kind of kind
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: of going around. And I'm usually not one to like
- 1:48:55Speaker 4: really try to read between the lines of everything they say,
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: but it's been hard these last few press avails when
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: you to hear from Kendrick Bourne and and of course
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: I mean even Tom. You know, Tom Current said it
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: to him like, you know, you realize when you say
- 1:49:07Speaker 4: this stuff that we're gonna take it, and you know,
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: he didn't really seem to care. I don't want to
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: like overstate it, but I do think that there is
- 1:49:13Speaker 4: still elements of last year that are that are are
- 1:49:16Speaker 4: affecting this team right now. And I think that you know,
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: you want to talk about tackle and receiver, all those things.
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: Like if they don't get this stuff behind them and
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: get on the same page for twenty twenty three, I
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: think that might be the biggest issue of all of them.
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: And I felt like that the first day of the
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: first OTA when Mac talked and came right out and said,
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: it's been good, it's been normal. Like I think that
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: was a reference to what wasn't normal last year. Yep, Tell,
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: and I just you know, it's a whole year later,
- 1:49:41Speaker 3: it's time to And I don't think Bill's done a
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: great job of putting in the past either. I don't
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: mean to put this all on Mac. I think Bill
- 1:49:47Speaker 3: hasn't done well great well, I mean certainly not from
- 1:49:51Speaker 3: you know, an optic standpoint, seemingly hasn't done a great job.
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: Of putting that in the past.
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: I agree, And moving on with Mac himself, he says
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: it to us everybody, he has a clean slate, but
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: it doesn't look like it.
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: From saying that Bill's value to him is to dissect
- 1:50:07Speaker 6: the defense because he's really good at defense, and like
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: that that is a shot right across the ego.
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: And do you think that, I mean, we're talking about this.
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: I think he was kind of, you know, just talking
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: and thinking that way. I don't I think if you
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: asked himself, I didn't mean it that way, and I
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: think he'd be honest. I think it came out that way,
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: but I don't think he.
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: Meant and I and I'm willing to give some wiggle
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: room with him, but.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: The tonnage of everything, I mean, right now, his focus
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: is Bill O'Brien is my offense guy, and Bill Belichick
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: is my head coach. And if I'm gonna think of
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: him as you know, on field, it's defense. And I
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: think that's what he was thinking, and he's probably right
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: right now. I mean, his daily interaction on offense is
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: Bill O'Brien.
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: You know, I just I think coming off and I
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: think I've had come out of nowhere a couple of
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: times with you guys in the office and just like,
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: because watching that last week, what was that last year?
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: Like?
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: What were they doing? Like, because it's even more glaring
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: to me now, was of like, you know, look now
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: we're seeing Adrian Clown, Billy Yates, they're working with the
- 1:51:11Speaker 4: offensive lineman. It looks normal. Remember last year when Matt
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: Patricia would like coach. Then he'd run over to the
- 1:51:17Speaker 4: offensive like it's just all these things now in.
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: Retrospect, and what was Joe Judge doing?
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: What the hell was going on? And it was and
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: to the point of Paul that, well that was last year,
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: like well, the season ended yesterday, like you know, like
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: I think, you know, I don't know if what has
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: been said to the players, but it's just clean. It
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: doesn't feel like it's ever been put to bed really
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: and optically, like I haven't seen evidence that it's been
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: put to bed.
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: Uh Kyle and Pembroke. Personally, I'm not too worried about
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: Connor McDermott starting at right tackle. He was our best
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: right tackle last season and played well at the end
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: of the season. While I don't think he's a great tackle,
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: I do think he can hold his own. I'm predicting
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: that they have him start the first couple of weeks
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: while they the Metro Stitcher at tackle.
- 1:52:02Speaker 4: Well, I mean, it's fine. You had the whole off
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: season to upgrade this guy, so you're okay with.
- 1:52:09Speaker 6: I got it. Yours your version is better.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: Well, but based on the newation of his urban guy city,
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: so Metro stitches.
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: Well, he's uh means something different.
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: A litigious swine.
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: Metro means something different.
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna say litigious swine.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: Like litigious swine, litigious swine. But that's Sue.
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: So no one, no one accidentally swears more in this
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: show than Deuce.
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: Unbelieve it messed.
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: Up my pun.
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: But no have we decided is it so? Is it
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: city is?
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: It's a good point that urban I thought it was Sue.
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: So everybody's saying it's so.
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: Sue. Okay, soise hands if you're thinking so I.
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: But the email brings us he could he could factor
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: into and they continue to use him a lot at
- 1:53:15Speaker 3: tackle in these spring camps. He could factor into the
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: mix too. Let's not get lost with with Connor mcderbott
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: was serviceable based on what they asked him to do
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: last year coming off a team's practice squad. Again, I know,
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: Isaiah Win is no longer a Patriot, so he wasn't
- 1:53:32Speaker 3: better than Isaiah Win. Isaiah Win had a miserable year
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: last year, and he still wasn't better than Isaiah Win.
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: I mean they just had a problem tackle last year.
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: I mean call it what it is that I think
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: given what he was asked to do the circumstances. I
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: give him an a plus Connor McDermott for what he
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: was asked to do. It wasn't a disaster.
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: He's still Connor, and it's still just if you have
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: a like he's fine, like well in the off season,
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: that's when you upgrade those guys.
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: That's what the whole I just go back to that
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: pre draft press conference with Macro and he stood up
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: there and he's and he rattled off all the names
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: that they had on the tackle depth chart like they
- 1:54:08Speaker 6: were like, oh, worre set of tackle, like you know,
- 1:54:10Speaker 6: we're fine there, And it's just that is gonna if anything,
- 1:54:15Speaker 6: I really feel like that's gonna end up being this
- 1:54:17Speaker 6: offense's Achilles heel, is the protection. And to just go
- 1:54:21Speaker 6: back to how they felt in April, it just I'm
- 1:54:25Speaker 6: not saying I would have taken Broder Jones over Christian Ganzale,
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: like I'm we're all happy with Christian Gonzalez, but they
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: had there were other tackles available on Day two and
- 1:54:35Speaker 6: early Day three that they let pass by that now
- 1:54:38Speaker 6: it's just really looking like a mistake. If this is
- 1:54:40Speaker 6: how it's gonna.
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: Go, Okay, Howie says it was a design mess in
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: my opinion last year, and then he says Belichick needs
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: one more draft and free agent to truly contend for
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: the walk off Super Bowl? Wow?
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: Patrick, does that? Does that drafted include that like like
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: a bona fide top five quarterback?
- 1:55:08Speaker 3: I don't know, because they're not. I mean, like, unless
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: something dramatically changes, they're not contending for Super Bowl as
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: is with this quarterback.
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: Oh come on.
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: So we do have we do have a pronunciation guide
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: from bart I'm assuming this is from college, and it
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: says that watches that it's city like, like Boston is
- 1:55:30Speaker 6: a city and it's so sao like cow.
- 1:55:35Speaker 3: So we were told that that's not how that city soo,
- 1:55:40Speaker 3: that's how.
- 1:55:40Speaker 8: That's how we got the pig in an urban it's
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: a cow in an urban setting, sau cow. But a
- 1:55:48Speaker 8: sow is a pig is a pig, so is a pig.
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: I grew up, believe me.
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: Different.
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: The cheerleaders there, I guy, some of those are my
- 1:56:04Speaker 4: good friends.
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: I used to work at the Compass Lounge and the Cape.
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: Remember Dennis, we used to have what they call whole
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: hog night girls ring free. I'm sorry what they called
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: it whole hog night.
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: Oh I thought that meant something different.
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: Now, Oh no, that was your Chippendale's place. Oh thunder
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: down under all right, we've devolved, all right, hr all right.
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: Coming up next is Catch twenty two with Evan and
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: Alex Uh. They'll take you through everything they believe is
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: true and what is myth when it comes to what
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: they watched at the Combine I'm not the combine at
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: the mini camps. And then they'll talk about d hop
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: I'm sure a little bit, and perhaps some other nonsensical things.
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: Other than that, we will see you next Tuesday.
