- 0:00Hey everyone, this is friendly. Welcome back to In the Stillness
- 0:04podcast. Thanks for joining me on today's
- 0:07podcast episode. We are going to be continuing in
- 0:11second John, and it's funny because we're actually only
- 0:15going to be reading one verse. And I thought I was going to be
- 0:18reading a lot more this morning in my quiet time, but I really
- 0:23started to sit on verse 7 and realized how much weight it
- 0:29carried and how much there was to learn.
- 0:31So I'm just going to stick to that one verse on today's
- 0:34episode. It felt so relevant for the
- 0:38culture that we live in. And we're going to be talking
- 0:41through false teachings, subtle deception, discernment, how to
- 0:46exercise that, and even how sometimes the things influencing
- 0:50us don't look dangerous at first, but over time they slowly
- 0:56shape us. And so that is why it is such a
- 0:59slippery slope and something that we have to be aware of.
- 1:02So let's go ahead and start by reading the verse and then we'll
- 1:06unpack it all together. Verse 7 says numerous deceivers
- 1:12have surfaced from among us and gone out into the world.
- 1:17People who will not acknowledge Jesus Christ coming as a man.
- 1:21These deceivers are antichrists. OK, very direct.
- 1:28The thing that stood out to me immediately, though, is that
- 1:31John says these deceivers came from among us, Meaning deception
- 1:38does not always look evil. At first it can sound spiritual.
- 1:43At times it might even sound loving.
- 1:47It might sound empowering or relatable.
- 1:50But these false teachers were rejecting the fullness of who
- 1:54Jesus was. They accepted parts of Jesus,
- 1:59but not all of Jesus. And honestly, I think people can
- 2:03still do the same thing today because people love the parts of
- 2:08Jesus that feel comforting to them.
- 2:12The message of love, peace, acceptance.
- 2:16But then when Jesus talks about repentance, obedience, denying
- 2:21ourselves, surrender, suddenly people want to redefine him into
- 2:28a version that feels easier to follow.
- 2:31But the bottom line is that we do not get to create our own
- 2:36version of Jesus. We are to either accept Him
- 2:40fully as Lord, or we are rejecting Him.
- 2:45And one thing I wrote down in my notes is that the danger of
- 2:49deception is how subtle and sneaky it can be.
- 2:53You're not going to hear somebody say, hey, come follow
- 2:57sin with me. It is compromise over time,
- 3:01being desensitized, repeated exposure to what is wrong.
- 3:06And this convicted me personally as I was thinking on it.
- 3:10There were TV shows and influencers I used to watch on
- 3:14the day-to-day because I thought that they were entertaining or
- 3:17funny. I used to watch Keeping Up with
- 3:19the Kardashians or Alex Earl vlogs, and for a while I thought
- 3:25it was extreme to think that those things could actually
- 3:29affect me spiritually. I was like, this is just my
- 3:32leisure time, it's my brain wrought hour.
- 3:35But when I started to take it more seriously and evaluate the
- 3:39fruit in my own life, I began to realize those things were not
- 3:43helping me become more like Jesus.
- 3:47Instead, they were fueling comparison, whether that be with
- 3:51lifestyle, appearance, it was resulting in discontentment, bad
- 3:57language was becoming more normalized, worldly thinking
- 4:00becoming more familiar. And I don't think it's because
- 4:05these people were necessarily waking up every day trying to
- 4:09deceive other people. But if someone is not walking in
- 4:14truth, their influence will naturally pull you away from the
- 4:18truth. And honestly, if we continue
- 4:22entertaining ourselves with things that oppose God's way
- 4:26while convincing ourselves that it's harmless, we are only
- 4:30deceiving ourselves. This standard is not.
- 4:34Is this technically allowed? The question is, is this helping
- 4:40me become more like Christ? And when I realized that the
- 4:45entire point of my life is to live holy and honorable before
- 4:49God, I started realizing there really is not room for
- 4:54compromise or settling even in the things that I consume
- 4:59casually for entertainment. What you consistently consume
- 5:04will eventually influence you and disciple you.
- 5:10Now, the more that we genuinely walk with Jesus, obey him, and
- 5:14stay rooted in truth, the easier it becomes to recognize what is
- 5:19fake. Discernment is not just knowing
- 5:23information, it is being close enough to Jesus, the one who is
- 5:28truth, that then false things start becoming easier to
- 5:33recognize. So when Romans 12 verse 2
- 5:37commands us to not conform to the patterns of this world, but
- 5:41to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that is
- 5:45reminding us that the world is constantly trying to shape how
- 5:49we think. And if we are not intentional,
- 5:53we can slowly start looking more like culture than like Christ.
- 6:00This passage was also challenging me to evaluate the
- 6:04character and conduct of the people influencing me.
- 6:08Not just are they funny, popular, relatable, attractive,
- 6:14but what is the fruit of their life?
- 6:18Are they leading people toward Christ, Closer to holiness,
- 6:23toward the truth? And this applies not just to
- 6:28social media influences or TV shows and movies.
- 6:32This also applies to friendships, relationships,
- 6:37everybody. I remember talking with a friend
- 6:41recently just about relationships and she has such a
- 6:45beautiful marriage so I was asking her for just godly advice
- 6:50as I am in a relationship and she told me when people give you
- 6:54advice, look at the fruit of their life first because
- 6:59everyone has something to say. Everyone has their own opinions,
- 7:03but not everybody is producing godly fruit.
- 7:07So if somebody is telling you something but you don't want
- 7:11your relationship or your friendships to look like what
- 7:15they have, be discerning about what you listen to from them.
- 7:20Jesus told us that we are to recognize people by their fruit.
- 7:25That does not mean perfection, but direction of their lives
- 7:29matter. So are they teachable?
- 7:32Can they receive correction? Do they submit themselves to
- 7:36God's Word? Or are they reshaping their
- 7:39truth around their feelings? How someone lives reveals what
- 7:44they truly believe. And of course, as I say this, we
- 7:50are not to just examine everybody else and not look in
- 7:53the mirror at ourselves. We influence people too, whether
- 7:58you realize it or not. God actually brought me to First
- 8:02Peter 5 yesterday when I was reading at lunchtime.
- 8:06And I think sometimes people, including myself, read passages
- 8:11about shepherding and can just assume, OK, that's just for
- 8:16elders of the church or pastors. But the reality is every single
- 8:22believer has opportunities to lead and influence people,
- 8:27whether that is in your workplace, in your own family,
- 8:31online, through social media, in conversations, every single day
- 8:38you are stewarding influence, whether you realize it or not.
- 8:42And we are called to shepherd people well to reflect Christ
- 8:47well, right where you're planted faithfully.
- 8:51And that takes humility. Second Timothy 3 verse 16 says
- 8:57Scripture is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting,
- 9:02and training us up in righteousness.
- 9:04So a mature believer is willing to be corrected, to be
- 9:09challenged, to be refined. If we are only accepting truth
- 9:14when it feels comfortable, we will never fully grow.
- 9:19At the end of the day, I think this verse was really calling me
- 9:23to examine what is shaping me and for all of us to ask
- 9:29ourselves what voices are influencing me?
- 9:33What am I normalizing? What fruit is my life producing?
- 9:39Am I becoming more like Jesus or more like culture?
- 9:45Because subtle compromise, it still leads us somewhere.
- 9:49If Jesus is truly Lord of your life, then nothing gets exempt
- 9:55from surrender, not even what entertains us.
- 10:00So let's go ahead and close out in prayer with all of that.
- 10:06Dear Jesus, I just thank you for this opportunity to have access
- 10:13to the Word of God that sharpens us, that teaches us, that calls
- 10:19us out. Thank you for this podcast and
- 10:24the opportunity to talk through these things and share with
- 10:28others. And I just ask that whoever is
- 10:31listening that they would hear from you.
- 10:34Lord, would you give them the ears to hear and the eyes to see
- 10:38your truth for what it is? I pray that we would grow
- 10:43together and become more spiritually mature.
- 10:47Would you give us discernment in what we consume, who we're
- 10:51following, what we allow to mold and shape our hearts?
- 10:57I pray that we would not conform to the world around us, but that
- 11:01we would be transformed to become more like you.
- 11:04Jesus. Would you expose any area in our
- 11:07lives that have compromise that we have become desensitized in?
- 11:14Teach us to love what honors You.
- 11:18I pray that our lives would produce good fruit, the fruit of
- 11:22the Spirit, Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 11:30faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
- 11:34Lord, I pray that that fruit would point people back to
- 11:37Jesus, help us to stay humble, to receive correction,
- 11:43instruction and to be refined through Your word.
- 11:48Lord, we pray these things in Jesus name, Amen.
- 11:53OK y'all, that is Tuesday's episode.
- 11:56I hope that this blesses you guys and that y'all have a
- 11:59wonderful rest of your day. I will see y'all on the next
- 12:03podcast episode.
