- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Tuesday December 9, 2025 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where Australia’s top security and defence leaders are stepping up talks with the United States... as tensions in the Indo-Pacific keep rising. Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles are in Washington... meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth for high-level alliance talks. On the table... how to respond to China’s growing assertiveness from the South China Sea to pressure on Taiwan... along with the wars in Ukraine and the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. For Australians... this is about how deeply our defence forces and industry tie into US strategy... from intelligence sharing to advanced weapons and AUKUS projects. The message from both sides... the alliance is only getting tighter... as the region becomes more volatile. — — [serious] In Western Australia... a major clash over youth justice and the treatment of Indigenous children in custody. The state government is pushing back against a coroner’s scathing findings over the death of 16-year-old Noongar teenager Cleveland Dodd in 2023. The coroner found Cleveland was kept in what was essentially solitary confinement in Unit 18... a youth wing inside an adult maximum-security prison... with poor access to healthcare, education and even running water. He urged the government to shut Unit 18 urgently. But WA’s Corrective Services Minister Paul Papalia is refusing... arguing there is “no facility in the state more fit for purpose” to hold the most dangerous and complex young offenders... while a new purpose-built centre is constructed. For Indigenous communities and advocates... the fight over Unit 18 has become a test of how Australia treats some of its most vulnerable children... and whether reform follows tragedy. — — [serious] In New South Wales... communities are counting the cost of a deadly bushfire emergency that is only now starting to ease. Several regions have been declared natural disaster zones... unlocking financial help for residents who have lost homes, fences, stock and livelihoods. Fire authorities say recent conditions have eased the worst of the threat... but the season is far from over... with hot, dry days still ahead and fuel loads high after wet years. For many families... the danger is followed by a long recovery... insurance battles, rebuilding delays... and the emotional toll of evacuations and loss. For the rest of the country... it’s another warning that severe fire seasons are now a recurring part of Australian life... and preparedness is critical. — — [serious] In New South Wales’ justice system... fresh alarm over how child abuse is being enabled online. Police have charged a man from Tamworth after an investigation by the Sex Crimes Squad... alleging he streamed live child abuse material. Detectives say the case highlights the speed and reach of online offending... and the constant need to track encrypted platforms, live feeds and offshore networks. For parents and carers... authorities are again urging close supervision of children’s online lives... and quick reporting of anything suspicious. For lawmakers and police... it adds pressure to keep strengthening tech regulation, digital tracing tools and cooperation with overseas agencies... as offenders adapt to every new platform. — — [curious] Now to our region... where Japan is dealing with the aftermath of a powerful late-night earthquake. A magnitude 7.6 quake strikes off the coast of Aomori in the country’s north-east... triggering tsunami warnings and urgent orders for coastal residents to move to higher ground. Smaller waves have been recorded so far... and there are no reports of serious damage to nuclear facilities... but rail services are disrupted and thousands briefly lose power. For Australians with family, friends or business ties to Japan... it’s another reminder of how exposed our region is to major seismic events. And for emergency planners here at home... each quake and tsunami alert in the Pacific is a real-time test of warning systems Australia also relies on. — — [serious] In Europe... the diplomatic push over Russia’s war in Ukraine enters a new phase. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in London... seeking fresh support as Kyiv faces a grinding conflict and pressure over how and when any ceasefire might be negotiated. French President Emmanuel Macron says new sanctions are finally beginning to hit Russia’s economy... while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voices scepticism about parts of Washington’s stance on ending the war. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer insists any ceasefire must be “just and lasting”... stressing Ukraine’s right to remain free. For Australia... which has supplied military aid and sanctions of its own... these debates in European capitals shape how long the conflict drags on... how high global energy and food prices stay... and how united democracies remain in confronting aggression. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
