- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm joined now by Danielle Black and we're going to
- 0:02Speaker 1: chat all about netball. Hello Danielle, how are you?
- 0:05Speaker 4: I'm good? Thank you. It's a lovely day today.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's lovely sitting up here and it's like a
- 0:10Speaker 1: glasshouse today in the greenhouse. So, Danielle, before we go
- 0:13Speaker 1: on to netball, tell us a bit about yourself. Did
- 0:16Speaker 1: you like sport at school? Did you you know, get
- 0:19Speaker 1: around in the bite hids and ever a flag?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Or did you? And did you play netball at school?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Interestingly enough, yeah, played netball since primary school and then
- 0:29Speaker 3: went on to do it in secondary school. After I
- 0:32Speaker 3: left secondary school, I decided to take it up at
- 0:34Speaker 3: the Ashford Netball League in Stanhope, played her there for
- 0:38Speaker 3: twelve years, and then I decided to because I live
- 0:42Speaker 3: in Folkston, decided to make folks in my main team
- 0:45Speaker 3: and then I mainly stay here and play games and
- 0:48Speaker 3: then I umpire in.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Dover or do you so?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Well? We're here today really to talk about the folks
- 0:54Speaker 1: in netball league, but there's lots of other things that
- 0:57Speaker 1: go along with it. So first of all, tell us
- 0:59Speaker 1: a little bit about the league itself.
- 1:01Speaker 3: So our games we play every week usually not in
- 1:05Speaker 3: half term, and we play them on Wednesday evenings, and
- 1:08Speaker 3: we tend to have two different divisions. We've got a
- 1:12Speaker 3: Division two and the Division one, and we have about
- 1:15Speaker 3: ten teams in our league at the moment. We play
- 1:18Speaker 3: on Wednesday evenings. Games start at quarter to seven and
- 1:22Speaker 3: then we have our second games at eight o'clock as.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Well, so you can get through the whole evening with
- 1:28Speaker 1: all these teams.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they're scheduled ahead of time. We have
- 1:32Speaker 3: someone that schedules them along with the umpires. When we
- 1:37Speaker 3: start playing netbort on a Wednesday evening, it tends to
- 1:40Speaker 3: sort of rotate.
- 1:41Speaker 4: We play the teams twice.
- 1:44Speaker 3: In our season and then we get the results at
- 1:47Speaker 3: the end of the season.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Right, okay, So, and what is your actual role in
- 1:51Speaker 1: the folks of netball League.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So I have recently joined the committee and I just
- 1:56Speaker 3: deal with the social media side of things. So I'm
- 1:59Speaker 3: the one that you'll kind of see on our Facebook
- 2:01Speaker 3: page posting results and dealing with any inquiries that way.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Oh see posting results, I must I must have a
- 2:08Speaker 1: little chat about results because I've been following the results
- 2:10Speaker 1: for a few years now. But there has been two
- 2:13Speaker 1: amazing results in recent times which I've never seen before.
- 2:17Speaker 1: There was two draws. One was twenty nine all and
- 2:20Speaker 1: one was thirty nine all. Now that is really unheard of.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Was you involved in any of those?
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah? Actually they were both, Mike.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So this year my team which I'm part of, Tigers,
- 2:32Speaker 3: has moved from Division two up to Division one and
- 2:36Speaker 3: our first game of the season we played a new
- 2:38Speaker 3: team called Merston and they were a tough team, but
- 2:42Speaker 3: we ended up with the thirty nine all, which as
- 2:45Speaker 3: a shooter, obviously you or anyone wants to win on
- 2:48Speaker 3: the whole team, but yeah, I wish I could just
- 2:50Speaker 3: got that one more goal. And then the following week
- 2:53Speaker 3: straight after that, we played Scorpions. Yeah it was Scorpions
- 2:59Speaker 3: that we played and then we ended up twenty nine
- 3:01Speaker 3: or and even we can believe it ourselves, So.
- 3:04Speaker 2: That is amazing.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the game itself. Let's say, you know
- 3:08Speaker 1: what sort of age group is playing now? Are they
- 3:11Speaker 1: mums or are they Are there many youngsters coming through?
- 3:14Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 3:15Speaker 3: So we have two main youth teams that play in
- 3:19Speaker 3: our league, which are the Scorpions, and we've got Stingrays
- 3:23Speaker 3: as well, which are one of the newer teams and
- 3:26Speaker 3: their secondary school age sort of from age thirteen to fifteen,
- 3:32Speaker 3: and they are coached by another Danielle. And we've also
- 3:36Speaker 3: got teams that Rachel coaches and Emily coaches. Emily coaches
- 3:41Speaker 3: a slightly younger age group I believe, sort of eleven
- 3:44Speaker 3: and twelve, and I hope too, because I believe there's
- 3:47Speaker 3: a waiting list for year fives and six is hopefully
- 3:50Speaker 3: sometime in the near future.
- 3:52Speaker 2: All right, so there is a lot this amazing iss
- 3:55Speaker 2: to me is going.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I think it's going under the radar, all this youth,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and it's so good to hear because I don't really
- 4:03Speaker 1: think netball is played much in schools now, is it not?
- 4:06Speaker 3: As far as I'm aware, I don't. I personally don't
- 4:08Speaker 3: think it's played as much as I remember. I think
- 4:11Speaker 3: it's occasionally brought in maybe for half a term, which
- 4:15Speaker 3: is definitely not enough time to get a good grasp
- 4:18Speaker 3: of the sport and you know, find a real love
- 4:20Speaker 3: for it. And as coaches, we speak between ourselves and
- 4:24Speaker 3: we kind of say it's a bit of a dying
- 4:25Speaker 3: sport without the coaches.
- 4:27Speaker 4: So yeah, it's important to keep it going.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Right until about coaches and if you like umpires, I mean,
- 4:34Speaker 1: is there a structure available where someone who's, if you like,
- 4:38Speaker 1: coming to the twilight end of their career, but once
- 4:41Speaker 1: to stay involved in the game, can they go on
- 4:43Speaker 1: to coaching quite easily or umpiring.
- 4:46Speaker 3: The coaching courses are quite hard to come by, but
- 4:49Speaker 3: you can go through the England Netball website and you
- 4:53Speaker 3: can get notifications for when they come up. So at
- 4:56Speaker 3: the moment, I'm taking my Level one coaching course and
- 5:00Speaker 3: it's about one hundred and sixty pounds, which you can
- 5:03Speaker 3: fund yourself. You can also do umpiring courses. They're very
- 5:07Speaker 3: reasonably priced on the same website. They're about sixty pounds
- 5:11Speaker 3: and then you pay an additional fee to have your
- 5:13Speaker 3: practical exam.
- 5:15Speaker 4: But it's a really good way.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I find now that I sometimes I'd never thought i'd
- 5:19Speaker 3: say it, that I enjoy umpiring more than I do
- 5:21Speaker 3: play in Yeah, you find it kind of renews your
- 5:25Speaker 3: love for netball in a different way.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah, right, So I mean to raise the money, I mean,
- 5:30Speaker 1: do you do the clubs or England Netball without any
- 5:34Speaker 1: allowances or I mean do you do a bit of
- 5:36Speaker 1: fundraising or have you got sponsors.
- 5:38Speaker 3: So in particular, we tend to raise the funds ourselves
- 5:43Speaker 3: through tournaments and other means. We might ask for grants
- 5:48Speaker 3: from local businesses, so like this this weekend, we obviously
- 5:54Speaker 3: doing our tournament and we'll do a raffle, so that'll
- 5:57Speaker 3: be an additional way to raise money. We asked the
- 6:00Speaker 3: teams or any businesses that might be able to donate
- 6:02Speaker 3: any raffle prizes.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Right, so you said the magic word, the tournament, So
- 6:06Speaker 1: tell us what's coming up. This is happening, all happening
- 6:08Speaker 1: this Saturday, I understand, So tell us all about that.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yep.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So we start around nine point thirty on Saturday, so
- 6:15Speaker 3: you can coming along and watch even if you're interested
- 6:17Speaker 3: in getting back into netball at any point. Finish around
- 6:20Speaker 3: about half three. But it's a super shot, and we've
- 6:24Speaker 3: got mixed teams as well, so that means that we've
- 6:28Speaker 3: got up to three men on the teams, which is
- 6:30Speaker 3: going to be good fun. And they can only play
- 6:33Speaker 3: sort of goal shooter, center or goalkeeper. And the super
- 6:37Speaker 3: shot is there's an additional line in the circle which
- 6:41Speaker 3: is further out, and anyone that's the shooter knows that
- 6:43Speaker 3: it's difficult. But if you get a shot from that line,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you can get two points instead of one.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Oh, I see, Just so that's changing the rules make
- 6:50Speaker 1: it a little bit tough, especially for the shooters. Yeah,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and you've been a shooter, know all about that. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's interesting. Actually you touched on did I hear that right?
- 6:58Speaker 1: You said there's many involved, it's a mixed tournament.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But whose idea was there? Is there a common thing
- 7:04Speaker 2: in sort of tournament nitball?
- 7:06Speaker 4: It doesn't happen very often.
- 7:07Speaker 3: I have been a part of tournaments before, more so
- 7:10Speaker 3: in Ashford where they have looked to include men, and
- 7:14Speaker 3: actually they've gone above and beyond and more dresses before.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I'm not sure they're going to be doing that this Saturday.
- 7:18Speaker 3: But my husband's playing this Saturday for our team and
- 7:23Speaker 3: we've we've put him through his paces and he's come
- 7:26Speaker 3: out saying how he's got a new found appreciation how.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Hard it is, especially as a center.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, they are playing, and I think it's
- 7:35Speaker 3: going to be good fun.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And the men just are are they mainly if you're
- 7:38Speaker 1: like the husbands or boyfriends that have been sort of
- 7:42Speaker 1: coursed into into trying it this week thing, Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Pretty much.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And I mean, I've we've done a few practices and
- 7:51Speaker 3: a few of the husbands have actually been very good,
- 7:54Speaker 3: and I think they're quite sporty. And my husband, I
- 7:57Speaker 3: felt like I had to drag him to come to it.
- 7:59Speaker 3: He was sort of moaning and grown him.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But by the end he said, I didn't actually want
- 8:02Speaker 4: to come off the court.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Oh really?
- 8:04Speaker 4: So yeah, and he comes along regularly to support me
- 8:06Speaker 4: on our game side.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Excellent, that's great idea.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So all right, I've got a little quote here that says,
- 8:12Speaker 1: back to Nipple. It's something that I wondered if your
- 8:18Speaker 1: Nipple league had thought about about sort of coaching for
- 8:21Speaker 1: people that might want to come back into the game.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, so back to netblee is something that we have
- 8:26Speaker 3: actually run before as a league on mainly Sundays.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I think it was previously.
- 8:33Speaker 3: It doesn't happen at the moment now, but by myself,
- 8:37Speaker 3: as I've mentioned, I'm doing coaching, so it's something that
- 8:40Speaker 3: I would like to look at doing in the future
- 8:43Speaker 3: for those people. And that's sort of people that want
- 8:46Speaker 3: to have not played netbell for a long time. I
- 8:48Speaker 3: just want to get out and you know, get a
- 8:50Speaker 3: bit of fitness. I myself do netble for my mental health.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So you know, you come along and meet new people. Obviously,
- 8:57Speaker 3: if you want to find out more about that or
- 8:58Speaker 3: express an interest, that would be really good.
- 9:00Speaker 4: So we would ask that you contact us for our
- 9:02Speaker 4: Facebook page.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Oh excellent.
- 9:04Speaker 1: So okay, I think we've covered most things, Daniel, Is
- 9:07Speaker 1: there anything else that you think we've forgotten? I don't
- 9:09Speaker 1: want you to go away and think, oh, I should
- 9:10Speaker 1: have said that, you know, I think we've covered most
- 9:12Speaker 1: of it.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think it's good to sort of
- 9:16Speaker 3: spread the word about as many leagues as possible. Obviously
- 9:18Speaker 3: I've mentioned Ashford quite a bit. That's in Stanope. We've
- 9:22Speaker 3: also got Dover, the Dover Netble League, which is currently
- 9:27Speaker 3: being held at So the summer season starts again mid
- 9:32Speaker 3: May and it's been held at the St.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Edmund's Catholic School in Dover.
- 9:37Speaker 3: The team players is already filled for this season, but
- 9:40Speaker 3: we do look for floaters regularly, and there is an
- 9:43Speaker 3: email address that you can contact which is Dover Netball
- 9:46Speaker 3: League at gmail dot com and that's the register as
- 9:49Speaker 3: a floater for the season.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Okay, so before we go any further, can you just
- 9:53Speaker 1: explain what a floater is.
- 9:55Speaker 4: So a floater is someone that comes along with no
- 9:58Speaker 4: commitment to any specific team.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You can come along and you play for teams that
- 10:03Speaker 3: might need the positions. They'll post on sort of a
- 10:06Speaker 3: WhatsApp group or Facebook to say what players they need
- 10:10Speaker 3: for that particular.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Week and you just come along, meet new people, play
- 10:13Speaker 4: with no pressure.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Really okay, excellent?
- 10:15Speaker 1: So right, well, I mean it is before we go,
- 10:18Speaker 1: then is there any hellos.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Or any thank yous you want to add?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Someone might be listening and thinking, oh I know that, lady.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Just thank you to all the committee, especially for this
- 10:28Speaker 3: weekend in the tournament. It's been you know, I don't
- 10:31Speaker 3: think sometimes it's appreciated how much work goes on behind
- 10:34Speaker 3: closed doors. So Natalie and Ashley for putting together all
- 10:39Speaker 3: the events, anyone that's going to be helping on the day,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and as well she's always here helping.
- 10:44Speaker 4: So yeah, everyone really excellent.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Okay, So Daniel, thanks, So let's just wrap it up now.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So let's just say again, how can people get in
- 10:54Speaker 1: touch with the Netball League or do that first?
- 10:57Speaker 2: How can people get in touch?
- 10:59Speaker 3: So you can contact us through the folks to Netball
- 11:01Speaker 3: League Facebook. So if you just type into the search
- 11:04Speaker 3: bar folks to Netball League. It will come up and
- 11:08Speaker 3: you can message us on there if you want to
- 11:10Speaker 3: join or just be a bit nosy about what's going on,
- 11:12Speaker 3: and you'll see my name on there, so you can
- 11:14Speaker 3: always message.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Me, right, And the last thing then remind us where
- 11:18Speaker 1: and when this Easter tournament is. I just want to
- 11:21Speaker 1: make the point that it is booked up. I don't understand,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but you'd welcome people to come along and watch them
- 11:26Speaker 1: perps make a few inquiries if they're interested.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, So it's been held at the Three Hills
- 11:32Speaker 3: in Folkston and again it starts at nine o'clock in
- 11:34Speaker 3: the morning and goes on throughout the day until about
- 11:37Speaker 3: three o'clock.
- 11:38Speaker 4: But yeah, come along.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Most of us are all friendly, so you can just
- 11:41Speaker 3: come and speak to any one of us if you're interested.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Right, excellent, Daniel.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I'll tell you what thanks for taking the time today
- 11:47Speaker 1: is I've learned a lot more about netball just by
- 11:50Speaker 1: talking to you.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And you know, I think I'll come along. I want
- 11:54Speaker 2: to see these men in excellent.
- 11:55Speaker 4: It will be a good laugh.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Daniel, thanks very much.
