- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah, I'm ready! I've been practicing the days of the week. Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch... I love saying them. Lucas: Ahh, that's so good. And today we're going to learn something that goes right along with those days: school subjects. Luna: Oh, like what subjects you have on which day? That makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with the basics. The word for math in German is Mathe. Luna: Mathe. That one's easy — it's almost the same. Lucas: Right. And German class is Deutsch. Luna: Deutsch. So I'm learning Deutsch in Deutsch class. That's kinda funny. Lucas: It is! And English is Englisch. Luna: Englisch. Sounds like 'English' but with a different ending. Lucas: Yep. Now art is Kunst. Luna: Kunst. That sounds like 'canst' almost. I like art, so I'll remember that. Lucas: And history is Geschichte. Luna: Geschichte. Oh, that's a long one. ge schich te. Let me try: Geschichte. Lucas: Perfect. Geschichte. Now let's put these into sentences. If you like a subject, you say Ich mag... and then the subject. So if I like math, I say Ich mag Mathe. Luna: Ich mag Mathe. That's 'I like math.' Lucas: Exactly. What if you don't like a subject? You say Ich mag... nicht. So if you don't like art, you say Ich mag Kunst nicht. Luna: Ich mag Kunst nicht. So 'nicht' at the end means 'not'. Lucas: You got it. So Luna, do you like math? Luna: Hmm. Ich mag Mathe... Yeah, I think I do. But history? Ich mag Geschichte nicht. Too many dates. Lucas: I get that. So quick honest thing — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. No ads, just listener support. Luna: Yeah, it's pretty cool that people help keep it going. I'm glad they do. Lucas: Totally. Okay, back to subjects. So let's practice a little more. Say you like English: Ich mag Englisch. Luna: Ich mag Englisch. Easy, since I'm speaking it right now. Lucas: And if you don't like German? Ich mag Deutsch nicht. Luna: Oh, I hope not! But Ich mag Deutsch nicht would be 'I don't like German.' I'm glad I do like it though. Lucas: Good. Now let's try a little dialogue. I'll ask you: Magst du Mathe? That means 'Do you like math?' Luna: Magst du Mathe? Okay, so I answer: Ja, ich mag Mathe. Lucas: Perfect. And if I ask Magst du Geschichte? You say? Luna: Nein, ich mag Geschichte nicht. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's say you're talking about your timetable. On Monday you have math and English. Montag habe ich Mathe und Englisch. Luna: Montag habe ich Mathe und Englisch. So 'habe ich' means 'I have'. Lucas: Right. And on Tuesday you have history and art. Dienstag habe ich Geschichte und Kunst. Luna: Dienstag habe ich Geschichte und Kunst. That's a mouthful but I'll keep practicing. Lucas: You'll get it. So let's do a full round. I'll say a subject, and you say if you like it or not using Ich mag or Ich mag... nicht. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: Mathe. Luna: Ich mag Mathe. Lucas: Englisch. Luna: Ich mag Englisch. Lucas: Kunst. Luna: Ich mag Kunst. Actually, I do like art. Lucas: Geschichte. Luna: Ich mag Geschichte nicht. Sorry, Geschichte. Lucas: That's okay. So today we learned Mathe, Deutsch, Englisch, Kunst, Geschichte, and the sentences Ich mag and Ich mag nicht. Practice these, and next time you can tell us about your favorite subjects. Luna: Yeah, this was fun. I'll practice saying my timetable in German. Lucas: We'll see you next episode. Keep practicing with Fexingo! Luna: Bye!
