- 2:29have as my special co host for this Friday edition. It's a guy that
- 2:30you've listened to on Charleston Radio for a long long time. Not doing radio,
- 2:36he's crossed over to the dark side doing television right now. He actually
- 2:40sat behind the very mic that I'm sitting behind for years. His name is
- 2:44synonymous with broadcasting in the world of Charleston. Here Charleston Broadcasting. It is
- 2:49Rick Johnson. Good morning, sir, Good morning. How are you?
- 2:53I'm fine, Dave? How are you? Do you have any problems finding
- 2:55the studio this morning? I mean, if you've been here before, I
- 2:58had help, but I did make it in. Yes, I was able
- 3:00to find it. Well that's good. Now, try not to be nervous
- 3:02because I don't know have you been on the radio before. It's been a
- 3:07long time. But yeah, off and on, off and on. More
- 3:09of the Rick coming up. I want to talk high school football. They
- 3:13or WCHS network Game of the Week tonight, Chris LARTs you, Jeff Jared
- 3:17Lewis, I should say, Matt Guitar Murphy, Well you got for it
- 3:21tonight man. We will be in Hurricane tonight. As Hurricane, we'll try
- 3:23to bounce back from that lass a week and go to g W They've got
- 3:25Spring Valley coming in. The timber Walls are in desperate need of a win
- 3:30there oh in three, But they started the year out with a pretty rough
- 3:32schedule. They had Huntington, Cavil, Midland and then went all the way
- 3:36across the state to Jefferson last week for their first three games, and doesn't
- 3:40get any easier for them as they roll into Hurricane tonight. Spring Valley has
- 3:45never been oh and three and now they are. And of course I've never
- 3:47been oh and four. So we'll see if how this plays out. Tonight
- 3:52in Hurricane will be on the air at seven o'clock, kick off at seven
- 3:54thirty, and of course Hurricane put up you know, those gaudy numbers a
- 3:58couple of weeks ago, but then they gott I'm about a little last week.
- 4:00But it came back down to earth, that's for sure. And but
- 4:03they turned the ball over four times, and you just can't win when you
- 4:06do that. But even after that, they still had a chance to win
- 4:09that game. Just it was one of those nights where they went wrong and
- 4:14I guess they're hoping to uh to not have another one of those. Well,
- 4:16it's gonna be a perfect night for high school football weather wise too.
- 4:19This is what it's all about. Man, this is awesome. Yeah,
- 4:21finally finally feeling a little chill in the air. I'm liking that. Carriers
- 4:25like, yeah, we're gonna break out the sweater. I was like,
- 4:28we got another month in a half of the way of talking about that.
- 4:30Yeah, the high is still gonna be And I was looking at the forecast
- 4:31like a near eighty next week. We're not We're not quite there yet.
- 4:34Yeah I'm not. I'm not breaking out a sweater until at least December.
- 4:39Yes, you know that's got to be snow on the ground exactly. Uh.
- 4:43And of course let's talk about tomorrow on West Virginia Doors. But again,
- 4:46well, tomorrow we will celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the West Virginia
- 4:49Wildlife Center at French Creek. A lot of people don't realize that's been around
- 4:53one hundred years. It originally was the West Virginia Game Farm, opened up
- 4:58in nineteen twenty three as a place that the D and R would raise deer
- 5:02and turkey and bear another wildlife to be released back into the wild. But
- 5:06what they realized was that farm raised wildlife doesn't adapt well when it's released into
- 5:15the wild. So the concept, while nice in theory, didn't work.
- 5:18So they saw, well it's a waste of time and money. But what
- 5:21they did notice was people love to come up there and look at the animals,
- 5:26and so it transitioned from being a facility to reintroduce animals to becoming an
- 5:30educational facility and a zoological facility. And now you can go there and see
- 5:36just about every animal that was indigenous to West Virginia, some of which are
- 5:40no longer with us, some that have been reintroduced, and that's it.
- 5:44A French Creek, which is kind of out of the way for a facility
- 5:46like this, but keep in mind, at the time it was nineteen twenty
- 5:49three. They put it where they had in land and it was in French
- 5:51Creek. So but yeah, they're celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of that tomorrow,
- 5:56so we'll talk to the folks up there about that, and then we're
- 5:59going to talk about the West Virginia Trampers Association got their big Fall Rendezvous going
- 6:03on at Glenville tomorrow, so we'll have we'll be talking trapping as well with
- 6:08those folks. I want to throw this in here, Chris, speaking of
- 6:10the outdoors. One of my favorite ladies in the entire world, Grace Randolph
- 6:14of the Randolph Engineering Family, sent me a note that an organization she and
- 6:16her family are a big part of, the Putnam County Gun Club, are
- 6:20having a youth Day tomorrow at Eleanor at the Eleanor Gun Club. There twenty
- 6:25eighth year for this event and they provide everything. You don't have to bring
- 6:29guns or AMMO or anything. They got it all tomorrow at Ellimore Eleanor.
- 6:32Rather, all the youth must have a parent or some of the adult with
- 6:35them to participate in. Our registration is five dollars and if you need more
- 6:40information contact David Thompson three oh four seven seven six, nineteen fifty or three
- 6:44oh four five three nine fifty nine sixty five. Twenty eighth Annual Putnham County
- 6:48Gun Club Youth Day tomorrow in Ellena. Yeah, I've been to that before.
- 6:53They do a great job out there. They've always been very supportive of
- 6:56kids in the Putnam County community there. I think it took my kids to
- 6:59that one year we did the show live from there, Okay, And I
- 7:01remember I remember Hank was just a toddler. I made a little older than
- 7:05a toddler, but he caught a massive catfish out of their pond out there
- 7:09as part of the as part of the event. So yeah, Yeah,
- 7:12a good, good group and a good opportunity and the weather's gonna be great,
- 7:15so be a great place to take your kids tomorrow. All right,
- 7:17Chris, we'll be listening with the game time is tonight at or our broadcast
- 7:21time be on the air at seven and kick off at seven thirty and then
- 7:25after the game, Fred and Day you've have game night, all right,
- 7:27Chris, appreciate it, man, thanks a line. All right, Let's
- 7:30bring in Hannah Gardner from the Canal Trusty Main Association with this week to Adopt
- 7:33Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah, good morning, welcome to the
- 7:36show. How are you great? Hurry doing? Find My co host today
- 7:41is Rick Johnson and Hannah. Long before you were born, Rick Johnson was
- 7:46a radio starr in Charleston. Just so you know. Oh my god,
- 7:49he ain't lying long long before I was born now, and I'm just kidding
- 7:55about that, all right. I gotta ask you before we get to our
- 7:57pet this week. Hand. How was KEX for k nines last week?
- 8:01It was great? It was really successful. We had a lot more people
- 8:03than we had last year, so it turned out great. Great. I
- 8:07know. My man Steve Animal no pun intended from our news station, the
- 8:11Classic Rock Station nineteen seven a Mountain was there and he took some pictsels like
- 8:15everybody had a great time and raise some funds for the animal shelter. So
- 8:18hats off to everybody that took part. Let's talk about Moose. Moose is
- 8:22this week to Adopt Me please? Pet of the Week. Picture posted Dave
- 8:26Alden Radio and Facebook and at Dave A seventy on X tell us about Moose.
- 8:31Yeah, it's a moose. He is a nail. He is about
- 8:35three years old. He's a micro chippin. He's back vaccinated. He's also
- 8:41neutered, so he's all ready to go home. He's got all of his
- 8:45shots and everything, so he just needs a good home now. He is
- 8:48not that good with cats. He doesn't really like them, so he would
- 8:54probably do best in a home that does not have any cats. He is
- 9:00fine with very select fete dogs. He likes to be the star of the
- 9:05show, so he likes some dogs. So if you want to bring your
- 9:11own dog up to the shelter, we could do a meet and greet with
- 9:13Moose and your own dogs and make sure that they get along before you introduce
- 9:16him into your home as well. He also he's a really good jumper.
- 9:24He's a really smart boy as well, so he does know how to consensus.
- 9:28But with somebody out there with him, and with somebody out there playing
- 9:33with him or something, he'd be perfectly fine. I don't think that he
- 9:35tries to run away. I think he just likes to have fun, and
- 9:39he's really energetic and he likes to jump and play because he is very playful
- 9:43himself, and we consider him a little class crown because he just likes to
- 9:46be clumsy and run around and loves people. I mean, if you can
- 9:50see the smile on his face whenever you're petting him, he's sophy. It's
- 9:56much like the picture that I sent days. But he is ready for a
- 10:01good home. He just needs someone who's patient with him and someone who can
- 10:03give him that chance to be running free and just have him fun. He's
- 10:09a really, really good dog, and he does seem to be housebroken as
- 10:11well. And what is the what's the adoption fee for Moose Hannah? Well,
- 10:18until the twentieth he will be just ten dollars. We are having our
- 10:22ten years of life saving events for ten days of ten dollars adoption fees for
- 10:28all of our adult dogs and our cats and kittens. All right, now,
- 10:33you folks are in need of some other supplies. I was reading that
- 10:35to online. You're needed some cat litter, some blankets and whatnot. Talk
- 10:39about that. Yes, we always need blankets, we always need I know
- 10:48that we need some pill pocket to help give the dogs and even some of
- 10:52the cats. They make cat hill pockets as well. We need some of
- 10:56those. I know that we could also use some like uh, not big
- 11:03huge like comforters, but just some sheets. If you have any extra ones
- 11:07laying around that you're just not using, we would gladly take those. So
- 11:11just as long as you know they're not big pillows or something like that,
- 11:16will take them. I got a nice note from somebody sent to me,
- 11:20Hannah, and this is something that I really hadn't thought of, but we
- 11:22probably need to remind people. We're in a little bit of a cooler snap
- 11:26right now, but it's going to warm back up. But as we get
- 11:28closer and we get in further into falling into winter, cats like to climb
- 11:33up into and I guess maybe dogs do too, I don't know, but
- 11:37cats especially like to like to climb up under cars and the engines to stay
- 11:41warm. And somebody sent me a picture of it was kind of kind of
- 11:45sad really, of a of a kitten. A kitten did did survive,
- 11:48but that had climbed up into a car and just be careful as and I
- 11:52know it's we're not there yet, but as we get into the cooler weather
- 11:54much were it stays cold, just keep in mind that those kittens like to
- 11:58run around on and that's something that they like to do. Yeah, So
- 12:05if you I always tell everybody, if you get in your car, maybe
- 12:09just look under the car and make sure there's not casulai and under the car,
- 12:13just in case. But you can also honk your horn. I know
- 12:16that that might be funny. You might live in a neighborhood until or you
- 12:18really can't do that. But if you honk your horn, and you can
- 12:22honk your horn, then the cat will typically you know, get scared,
- 12:26wake up from their sleep if they're in the like engine area, and they'll
- 12:30just run away. So that definitely helps. But if you could just kind
- 12:35of walk around your car maybe like cap on the hood or something, and
- 12:39they say, typically will come out. Okay, all right, Hannah,
- 12:43it's always a pleasure to talk to you. We will we'll talk again next
- 12:46Friday. Thanks a lot. Thank you by Hannah Hannah Gardener again from Canal
- 12:50Charlesty Main association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Moose
- 12:54is the dog's name. A picture posted Dave Allen Radio on Facebook and at
- 12:58Dave A seventy on The artist formerly known as twitter three years old, neutered
- 13:03vax microchip, prefers to be the only dog. Doesn't really like cats,
- 13:07and if you're thinking about adding them Rick to your family. Probably not so
- 13:11much with other dogs. But you can always arrange as Hannah set a meet
- 13:13and great to bring your dog up there to see how it works. I
- 13:16like that that way you'll know early on if you're gonna have a great,
- 13:20big family or maybe it's not gonna work out. And he likes to climb,
- 13:24and again he's not trying to escape what Hannah says. He just likes
- 13:26to have fun. So you might want to have a tall fence or something
- 13:31like that. And remember his adoption fee is only ten dollars to the twentieth
- 13:35of this month, so and he's got a million dollars. Smile. He
- 13:39really does. Yeah he does. Again. Go look at a picture Dave

- 17:45my adopted homeland of Putnham County. Rob representing Rivers to Ridges in the Heritage
- 17:49Show. Good morning, Rob, How are you doing good in you Dave?
- 17:53I'm doing fine. Rick Johnson's my co host today, Rob, My
- 17:56boy, what do you got going on over there? With the rister ridget
- 18:00Herenage trail Well. This week is our final of our four race series of
- 18:04the year, and tomorrow actually starts at ten am at the West Virginia Farm
- 18:11Museum over on Point Pleasant. And if you're not familiar with the Mothman Festival
- 18:15that's going on this weekend brings around twenty five or thirty some thousand people to
- 18:21Point Pleasant. Took gonna be a packed weekend of great fun down there.
- 18:23But we've got what's called the Mothman Search Team Bike Ride. So this is
- 18:29going to be through nine miles on grass and gravel through the McClinton Wildlife Management
- 18:34Area and the Westernia Farm Museum. It's a great chance to kind of get
- 18:40a tour around the mcclinton's Wildlife Area. You get to see the ponds,
- 18:44you get to see the T and T bunkers and right through some of the
- 18:48bunkers. Hopefully maybe find the Mothman out there somewhere too. But it starts
- 18:52at ten am race we do at Strata Raise at ten fifteen for the little
- 18:56ones. It's just gonna be a fun day. It's gonna be great.
- 19:00Rob explain the whole concept behind this Rivers to Ridges Heritage Trail, and I
- 19:03want to change the name because I have a heck of a time scene Rivers
- 19:07to Ridge's Heritage Trail. Explain the whole concept behind him, well, Rivers
- 19:11to Ridges our Heritage Trail. Our Heritage Trail runs from Nitro to Point Pleasant
- 19:15on the north side of the Canal River. There mostly about our focus on
- 19:21recreation history and the just all the focus on those areas that don't get highlighted
- 19:27very much in other other aspects there. So we like the host events all
- 19:33on the trail to kind of promote different areas that might not get highlights throughout
- 19:37the rest of the year there too. So it's a it's a nice way
- 19:41to be able to spread the word but also spread the word of the recreation
- 19:45and just the history along the trail as well. And you're saying, Nitro
- 19:51to point pleasant, Yes, sir, that's a long way, isn't it.
- 19:55It is, Yes, it is. I don't even want to drive
- 19:56that in a car. It's a beautiful jove if you ever get a chance
- 20:00to. But there's so many historical locations, and you got Raymond City and
- 20:04got Black Betsy and all the all the great towns along the way there too,
- 20:08And there's so much history on the side of the river that a lot
- 20:11of people are It goes under underrecognized a lot too. So our promote,
- 20:17our our goal is to try to promote and get the word out about the
- 20:19history and heritage in that area. Rob working people learn more about it.
- 20:25Well if you go to Rivers to Ridges dot com as our website got all
- 20:29our information on there. If you do go to the registration tab, the
- 20:33registration link is right on that page. For anybody eighteen years and up as
- 20:38twenty dollars, twelve years to seventeen years is ten dollars, and anybody eleven
- 20:42years and below is five dollars. All right, So we locked in our
- 20:47early pricings for the whole time. So it's a good deal and a great
- 20:51great way to be able to support a good nonprofit and also get a good
- 20:55tour of the area that you don't get to see all the time. Well,
- 20:56and kind of the theme of the next couple of days, Robs is
- 21:00going to be the fantastic weather here in West Virginia. You couldn't ask for
- 21:03any better weather. And then you can go and enjoy the Mothman Festival,
- 21:07right exactly. They've got jam packed stuff all day long. And I mean

- 22:03take on Southern Maryland. Eaton Douglas from the Dirty Birds joins us now for
- 22:07the Bigley Pigley Wiggly Hot Lion. Eaton, Good Morning, How are you?
- 22:10Good morning? I'm well, how are you? I'm fine? And
- 22:12my co host today is Rick Johnson. So what don't we have lined up
- 22:17for the finale this weekend? Miss Douglas. It is the last weekend of
- 22:22baseball in Charleston for the twenty twenty three season. It's crazy that you know,
- 22:26we're already here, but we've got a big night tonight. We've got
- 22:29a Julio Rodriguez bobblehead, which is pretty awesome. And for people who don't
- 22:33know Julio, he played here for the West India Power in twenty nineteen and
- 22:38now he's made his way to the Mariners and he's been Rookie of the Year
- 22:41and All Star, participated in the Home Run Derby. So pretty cool to
- 22:45have him a part of baseball and back in twenty nineteen. And so we're
- 22:49going to celebrate him tonight with a Sunday's gonna be a fan appreciation It's already
- 22:55here and then Sunday's gonna be a fan appreciation day. So we invite fans
- 23:07to all fans to come out. We're gonna have some some sessions, stand
- 23:10deals, and be given away some things on Sunday. What time do the
- 23:14gates open tonight? Five thirty. Gates open at five thirty, first pitch
- 23:18at six thirty five, and we're gonna give away the Julio babblehead. But
- 23:22we're also going to name our pitcher of the Year and our MVP for the
- 23:26year before the games signed as well. Now, Eden, I understand that
- 23:30the Birds have a new general manager. Is that right? We do.
- 23:33Ben Blom was our business operations manager. He joined the team in January,
- 23:38and he was named the general manager early last week, and we're really excited
- 23:44to see what all he can do here. He's been absolutely amazing the time
- 23:48that he's been here so far, so we're excited to have him on board.
- 23:52Indeed, And I know the numbers are still being crunched and we'll be
- 23:55overall over the next couple of months. But oh, but just talk overall
- 23:59generally about a ten that's this season. Pretty good season for the Dirty Birds.
- 24:03Yeah, good season. I actually got an email last night to say
- 24:06that our attendance rose again this season, so that's pretty awesome. And we're
- 24:10super thankful for everyone who's came out to support us and our team and everything
- 24:14that we're doing to build. And although Dirty Birds Baseball is almost over,
- 24:18we've got a bunch of stuff coming up this fall that I think people are
- 24:21going to be excited about. Yeah, I want to talk about that briefly,
- 24:23just give us so kind of the over if you and I'll have you
- 24:25on several times between now and then. But what are some of the things
- 24:27that are going to be going on over Gomart Ballpark. Yeah, so October
- 24:32fourteenth and fifteenth, We've got the Selingo Law down in Dirty Music Festival.
- 24:37We've got local guys Josh Pantry that's going to be performing, Kate Boytech,
- 24:41and then we've got Nashville artists like Jamison Rogers, David Nail, John Linkston
- 24:45that are also going to be performing. And it's we're titling it like the
- 24:48biggest party in Charleston this fall because it really is going to be fun and
- 24:52you can go for as cheapest twenty bucks. I mean, you can't really
- 24:56go to a music festival anywhere for twenty dollars, so we're really excited to
- 25:00have that. And then we just announced we're having a light festival at the
- 25:03ballpark and starting November seventeenth through January first. So it's the Selinga Law Dirty
- 25:10Birds Lights the Night And when I say every inch of the ballpark is going
- 25:12to be covered in Christmas lights, every inch is going to be covered.
- 25:15So it's gonna be really cool. Is there a place where one could go
- 25:21eating online and get a sample of what that's going to be? Like,
- 25:25I think I've seen something online about it. Yeah, you can go to
- 25:29our website, dirty birds baseball dot com to look at the ticket options and
- 25:34to see like kind of like a small, short, little video. We've
- 25:37partnered with Lawrence y'all's. They're the baseball team in Florence, Kentucky, and
- 25:42they've done this before, so we're bringing what they do here. So if
- 25:48you go to our website or you can look up Florence Y'all's deck the y'alls,
- 25:52and you can see a video and pictures of everything that it has to
- 25:56offer. All right, and again there's a lot going to be going on
- 26:00during the off season, but let's let's let's dial it back and go talk
- 26:03about this weekend with the baseball game time tonight, Tomorrow and Sunday. Eating
- 26:07game time tonight is six thirty five, gates open at five thirty, same
- 26:11thing. Tomorrow night, gates open at five thirty, first pitch at six
- 26:15thirty five, and then Sunday gates open at three with a four or five
- 26:18first pitch and of course you got the bobblehead thing going on, but you're
- 26:22also doing Mega Blast fireworks, right. Yeah. The last Mega Blast Fireworks
- 26:26show is tomorrow night, and we know it's a w pit game, but
- 26:30we will have it on throughout the concourse in certain areas so you can still
- 26:33get catch some of the game while you're at our game, if you want
- 26:36to do the very last fireworks show. All right, eating and again,
- 26:40a lot of things going on during the off season. I really like what
- 26:41this ownership is doing with this is that once the final pitch flies on Sunday,
- 26:45it's not like we're going to say, okay, well, we'll see
- 26:48you again in May or June. It's you've got things going on with it,
- 26:51with the music festival and with the with the Christmas Lights, which actually
- 26:55begins well before Thanksgiving. We'll have you on plenty of times between now and
- 26:57then to a talk of out of even I appreciate you as always, we'll
- 27:00talk soon. Thanks a lot, Yes, thank you, Dan Douglas from
- 27:04the Dirty Birds. Lots going on there, mister Johnson. I love the
- 27:08after season stuff. Yeah, especially I mean there's I mean, it's some
- 27:11beautiful ballpark. Why not you and of course we're going to be doing I
- 27:15don't know the exact date yet, but the we'll be doing Tricker Beat over
- 27:18there with our sister station, The Beat. So as talking about that as
- 27:22well. Rick Johnson is my co host Day Texas. Dave is your co
- 27:25host a guy that had an afternoon show with Mike Agnello. Yes, that
- 27:29that would be him. Absolutely, We're going to talk about that covered up
- 27:32a little bit later on. Also, I have been informed, and I
- 27:34don't know one percent of it's going to happen, that we may actually have

- 34:08we do that, I mentioned that we had I'm gonna have a run in
- 34:12from the man the myth ledge and talking about Rob Reel from our sister station.
- 34:15I think I run is my mouth. So it's a walk in.
- 34:19It's a breathing heavy come in. Yes, Rob Real is here, ninety
- 34:22six one k WUS morning show host. Uh and uh, you know I
- 34:25was trying to describe to the people you got these flowing locks, yes,
- 34:30Rick, and I wish we had flowing min minor on my back. But
- 34:36let's talk about what you're what you're doing with this hair man? What's up
- 34:38with this? So I promise this is the cliff notes version. Well,
- 34:43I'm gonna shave have my head shaved. I'm gonna have a professional do it
- 34:45on Sunday at rib Fest as a payoff to me shooting my big mouth off
- 34:51during our WVRC Media Cares for Kids radiothon presented by Stike Wealth Enhancement Group.
- 34:54This time last week, I pledged that if we got to us certain number
- 35:00of miracle makers to help VU Medicine Children's that I would shave my head,
- 35:05that this would all be gone. And I did it during a power hour,
- 35:08which is you know when money gets matched by sponsors. So all right,
- 35:12we'll do the beard too, So it's all gonna go on Sunday this
- 35:16began. It's kind of hard to set this up. I had long,
- 35:22curly red hair as a kid until I started playing organized sports, and coaches
- 35:29don't let you have long hair. So I went to the really short and
- 35:31then it was into the Marine Corps and I played in the minor leagues,
- 35:35and so it was for decades I would have short regulation hair and then but
- 35:40my mom always loved the curls. And so when it became evident a couple
- 35:45of years ago that Mom was taking her final lap, that she was in
- 35:49her year of last, I called it. I just started letting the hair
- 35:52grow. I didn't have anybody to whom I needed to be responsible for that,
- 35:54so I just started letting it grow out and letting it grow out.
- 35:58And this Sunday, coincidentally will be the anniversary of her death. So and
- 36:02Mom, we grew up. We grew up poor. Like neckbone soup poor.
- 36:07I am one of ten kids, my mom is one of nine,
- 36:08my dad is one of ten, and so we we we help with elbow
- 36:14grease. In my family, we didn't have the money to do it,
- 36:16so it was what can you do? How can you help people that way?
- 36:21And and mom was always making chicken salad out of lemonades or however that's
- 36:23supposed to go. And so I think this would be an appropriate hat tip
- 36:29to the way she got things done. So, so you reached the goal
- 36:32with the radio. And so you are going to shave every I mean the
- 36:38head, the beard, everything, It's all gonna I will sit down.
- 36:42I mean, you have no no hair above the name I've I have requested
- 36:45the zero guard. If you know anything about hair cutting, so it will
- 36:51be you. You will see kind of the shadow of my hairline and my
- 36:54browback pretty quick. I will do the zero, and it's all going to
- 36:57go, and the beard will grow back pretty I will do the zero and
- 37:00it's all going to go, and the beard will grow back pretty quickly,
- 37:04which is good because I got a couple of ugly scars from when I got
- 37:06my purple heart. But when was the last time you had hair that short
- 37:09or close to it. The last the last time I had what I call
- 37:14the regulation haircut. And when I say that, I mean basic training Paris
- 37:16Island. The last time I would have had that would have been probably about
- 37:22three years ago I did that. This is two years worth of hair.
- 37:25My last haircut haircut was about this time in twenty twenty one. Okay,
- 37:30and what time is all this happening. We're aiming for four thirty I'm waiting
- 37:35for on Sunday. On Sunday, the time that the wing eating contest is
- 37:38going to be on. Yes, so I'll do the introduction. I'll do
- 37:43it over the over the wings. So I think that's part of me pick
- 37:46this time because I don't want to wear a hairnut when the contest. But
- 37:52yeah, well we'll we'll do the introductions at four o'clock on Sunday on the
- 37:54big stage at had at Riverfront Park. Then we'll do it at our tent.
- 37:59Shave my head and all that, and I will be clean as a
- 38:00whistle, very aerodynamic by the time we hit six o'clock for the win.
- 38:04Ating cannot wait to see the pictures and I can't wait to see it this
- 38:07weekend. So I'm the only person who's gonna lose weight rib vest and there
- 38:12you go. Rob Real, appreciate it. Man up real early is the
- 38:15show right every workday morning? All right, man, we appreciate Rob Real
- 38:19again. We've got the flowing locks now, Richard, but not after,
- 38:22not after, not after Sunday. Now, he's a man of his word.

- 38:52here for the rest of the show. Ricky, ever do anything crazy like
- 38:54that, I'm like shaving your head or anything like that, and radio.
- 38:57The craziest thing I did like that was sixty eight continuous hours in a mini
- 39:01submarine in a swimming pool. Set up in the show room of then Burt
- 39:07wolf Ford in the Patrick Plaza. I remember that story. Now, what
- 39:12was the whole the whole story behind that. I mean, just well,
- 39:15it was trying to break a record, and I don't know who had the
- 39:19record before me, but yeah, two and I worked for sixty eight WC
- 39:22a W at the time, and so hey, let's put him in this
- 39:25U mock submarine for sixty eight hours, which would they submerge the submarine in
- 39:31the swimming pool that was set up and at the dealership and I broadcast live
- 39:37from inside the submarine for sixty eight hours. Wow, Now that was a
- 39:40long, long, long time ago. That kind of stuff. Hung up.
- 39:45Let's talk about your your your career in the broadcasting field here in the
- 39:49Trolston area. But before I do that, I want to give us the
- 39:52bio on Rick Johnson outside the world of radio. Where did you come from?
- 39:55Where you from? You know, the whole thing. Born in Akron,
- 39:59Ohio. My family, my parents moved to Charleston after I was born.
- 40:02I lived to have grown up in Charleston. It's really Saint Albans.
- 40:07My family moved to Saint Albans in the fifty mid fifties. I went to
- 40:10uh schools there, Parkway Elementary How deep do you want to go? St?
- 40:15The Late Saint Albans Junior High School and Saint Albans High School, and
- 40:19then went a couple of years to West Virginia State and started working in radio
- 40:22at that time. I started my radio career when I was seventeen, and
- 40:28as did I must be the ultimate the optimal time, I guess, because
- 40:31I was seventeen when I started. Yeah, and I knew when I was
- 40:35a kid the same this was what I wanted to do. And because I
- 40:40listened to radio here in Charleston, and who are some of those names?
- 40:44But you listened to well, uh, Mike Hammer, Uh of course Jay
- 40:51jarrold Uh, Papa Jay at Night. He was about to be inducted into
- 40:54the Westernia Broadcasting Hall of Fame in October along with our own Stephen jenn and
- 41:00the general manager here Joe Parsons. Absolutely that some of the ones and Mike
- 41:04Parsons And yeah, So anyway, that's I got started in high school and
- 41:10part time at ninety nine point nine FM, which is w VAF, which
- 41:15is V one hundred. It wasn't V one hundred back then. But that's
- 41:16how I got when I got started, and I just continued on. I
- 41:21mean the door opened and I did stick my foot in. I ran in
- 41:25because I said, I know, that's what I want to do. And
- 41:29uh so that's what I did. And I thoroughly enjoyed my radio career,
- 41:35loving my TV career now. So broadcasting for me has spanned two different uh
- 41:39media for news here in the assignment manager at wwk TV thirteen News here in
- 41:45the assignment manager at wwk TV thirteen News here in Charleston Huntington. And uh
- 41:51yeah, it's it's a busy day every day. But that's what we like
- 41:53well, and that's that's part of the excitement of broadcasting in general. Of
- 41:59of of again, i've been doing it for thirty five years. Like you,
- 42:00I started when I was seventeen. Is that even though and even with
- 42:04a talk show, I come in and I's with topics and this is what
- 42:07I'm going to talk about it, but things change and it's one of you
- 42:09and I were talking, you're going to break. One of the great things
- 42:12about talk radio and very parallels very much with with television is it's one of
- 42:17the last live things that are out there. I mean, this show that
- 42:21I do right now is one hundred percent live, whereas you know, some
- 42:25other things in the world of radio and television just the way it is are
- 42:29not live. This is one hundred percent live. That's why I enjoy it.
- 42:31Now. Talk about this show, five eighty Live. Danny Jones hosted
- 42:36the show before I did. But long before there was a Dave or there
- 42:39was a Danny, there was a five eighty Live back in that time.
- 42:44It was called fifty eight Live. Yes, uh, and it was every
- 42:46afternoon from three until six here on on the station. And uh yeah,
- 42:52I mean it was when I got involved with it, it was me and
- 42:55Stephen Reid No I'm gonna I'm sorry then and then Michael Agnello was the co
- 43:01host, and so two different folks I got to work with, and kind
- 43:06of we worked the afternoons. It was a three to six show every afternoon,
- 43:10three hours of live conversation and topics, and of those topics were local
- 43:21and which was good. I mean, we're what a mile from the state
- 43:23capital, so it worked out well and we had we had a lot of
- 43:30interesting guests. We had uh you know, we had times if we do
- 43:35things have people come in who were really on totally opposite sides of whatever the
- 43:40topic was in subject matters. So thanks again. Heated a little bit.
- 43:43No chairs were you know, zip through the air. So I mean,
- 43:47but that's what it was, and it was it wasn't It was a great
- 43:51It was a great career. Well, and you have a text here that
- 43:53says, I remember Rick and Mike's broadcast from Ground zero on September the eleventh.
- 43:59The plaque in the way treading to radio lobby is beautiful, by the
- 44:00way, great to hear you again, Rick, admit it, you miss
- 44:04this, have a great weekend to the text. Well, thank you.
- 44:07Yeah, I mean, yeah, I will. I miss this and always
- 44:14will because it was where I started. This is where I got in radio
- 44:17in general. And yeah, I mean if there's parts of it that I
- 44:20will always cherish in love always always the listeners, Yeah, uh, you
- 44:24know make it they really do. They do. And you know, I
- 44:30go totally where it's changed a little bit in radio now. It's all it's
- 44:35more about the computer, more about the text than what it is. The
- 44:37phone calls. I mean, I may take two or three phone calls a
- 44:39week, but I get probably thirty texts a day. There's no way I
- 44:42could possibly read all the text that I get, and that's kind of how
- 44:45it's changed. But I'll have people that will text the show Rick and they'll
- 44:49say, you know, I can't believe you said that, or I can't
- 44:51believe you believe. But then you know, around Christmas time, I get
- 44:54a texted Dave, appreciate the job you do. Have a great weekend or
- 44:58something. I have a great Christmas or whatever. You know, that's the
- 45:00listeners are what makes us. That's what makes us, and in the world
- 45:02of television, what makes it as the people on the other side of the
- 45:06screen totally, and it never came closer to being home for me was when
- 45:13we did the Dacho coverage in twenty twelve. When you realize how many people
- 45:19are listening and how you on the air are affecting their lives, that was
- 45:24just a total wake up call for me that, yeah, it is important
- 45:29what we do, whether it's radio television, it is important, and we
- 45:31have the ability to help people on the other side of the microphone or the
- 45:36TV camera. Yeah, exactly, it's nine to fifty three. We're gonna
- 45:38take a break. Rick Johnson's my co host. We're gonna do ten questions
- 45:42right after this from the Palmar Store. Studio. Five Live is brought to

- 48:21was the one radio or television station that you would have loved to have worked
- 48:24at? Kazy breakfast foods, eggs, bacon, pancakes, et cetera after
- 48:31breakfast time? Yes or no? Yes? Had radio or television not been
- 48:37in the cards for you? What may you have done for a career commercial
- 48:42artist? Were you popular in high school? These are boring, boring answers.
- 48:45I'm sorry, no, okay, Why is Amanda Baron so damn perky
- 48:51because she's Amanda Baron? Uh? Last time you had a baseball cap on?
- 48:55And what was on the baseball cap? It was? It was a
- 49:00It was a camo hat and it had some sort of camo outfit logo on
- 49:05the front. Everyone talks about Rick their favorite color. What is Rick Johnson's
- 49:09least favorite color? Yellow? Score? On the WV pit game tomorrow night,
- 49:17West Virginia seventeen, Pit fourteen, Rick, Congratulations, you have completed
- 49:22ten questions. Ding ding ding ding, ding ding ding ding ding. Done
- 49:23it? You've done it. We mentioned Rick, some of the greats and
- 49:29broadcasting that you worked with over the years. Did we leave anyone out the
- 49:32tell me about Don Cook? Oh Cookie? Yeah, I knew Dominan never
- 49:37worked with him. I did, and I loved working with Don Cook.
- 49:40Don was a was just a great guy, and he I think he tried
- 49:45to come off as sort of a curmudgeon at times, a little bit gruff,
- 49:50like what do you want in here? Uh? But I knew underneath
- 49:53all of that was was a great, big, soft, plush teddy bear,
- 49:58and he was. He was just a terriffic co worker for me and
- 50:01a good friend I love. Do you remember when talk Line the Hoppy host?
- 50:05Now, when it first started? Because I do. I was in
- 50:07radio and we care. I mean, I don't remember the exact year,
- 50:10but if I am correct, and somebody can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 50:14But it was a once a week show. Talk Line was with Hoppy and
- 50:17and K Murray, Don Cook was on from time to time. We carried
- 50:21it. I was working uh in logan at the time, and we we
- 50:23carried it at one point. But I think that's the way it started.
- 50:29I don't remember that. Okay, I know that that Don Cook did.
- 50:32Uh he subbed for Hoppy when on vacation. Yeah, but yeah, you
- 50:38might be right. I don't know. I'll have to look into that.
- 50:40Maybe that's who I need to have on as a guest, Hoppy Kerchival.
- 50:45I need to have Hoppy to come down to Charleston. I'll have him on.
- 50:47But you know how it is when you're prepping for a show and everything,
- 50:50all right, So how many years I don't want to have to put
- 50:52you on the spot. But now you're doing the television thing. Now you're
- 50:54happy as you could be over WWK, great people over there. I mean,
- 50:59I love I dealing with We have a great relationship with him. How
- 51:01many years you're going to continue in this broadcasting game, I don't know.
- 51:05I really don't know. As long as I feel good, I have no
- 51:08health issues, I can still walk and chew gum at the same time,
- 51:14I feel like I could I could just keep going for a while. Got
- 51:19a texture from somebody that said, we can't forget Jack Kane and Jack Kane.
- 51:22Jack Kane used to host the fifty eight Live show in the afternoon.
- 51:24Yes he did, Yes he did, he and and did a great job.
- 51:29And everybody loves Jack Kane. YEA. Everybody who's never met him still

- 51:37on Facebook, watched him on television, listened to the show. I consider
- 51:40him a friend and I've never even met him. I mean, that tells
- 51:43you something about Jack Kane. Jack Kane is the reels, he really is,
- 51:46and he's just a terrific guy. And he's doing well in his retirement.
- 51:51And he certainly has hearted. Rick final text says Rick Johnson is a
