- 0:27into our study. Amen.
- 0:30Open your bibles. Genesis chapter 49.
- 0:34We are almost at the end. Genesis chapter 49 in a Bible
- 0:39study that I've entitled Israel's final blessings and
- 0:43we're referring to Jacob as Israel here here as he gives his
- 0:47final blessings and it's time to say goodbye to Jacob.
- 0:51We're going to miss him. As we learned last time, we
- 0:54followed Jacob's life since he was in the womb.
- 0:57We've watched him grow up and seen the twists and turns of his
- 1:01life, the UPS, the downs, the successes, the failures and his
- 1:05life teaches us how spiritual growth is slow and steady.
- 1:10There are no shortcuts. There is that sense where you
- 1:13take a couple steps forward and five back and three forward and
- 1:1710 back. That's part of the process, and
- 1:19we see it very clearly in Jacob's life.
- 1:23And here he is living in the providential will of God, seeing
- 1:27his son with his grandkids, now blessing his kids with these
- 1:33final words inspired by God. Notice in verse one of chapter
- 1:3749, Jacob called his sons and said, gather together that I may
- 1:42tell you what shall befall you in the last days.
- 1:45Gather together and hear you sons of Jacob, and listen to
- 1:50Israel, your father, and what a scene.
- 1:54If we could use our holy imagination, what a scene this
- 1:58must have been to watch the gathering of these grown men
- 2:04coming around their dad's bed to hear his last words.
- 2:06I mean, they're probably in their 50s or 60s.
- 2:10Here, he's not laying back but leaning upon his staff,
- 2:14mustering all the strength that he can for these final words.
- 2:18It's a serious time. It's a somber time of
- 2:21instruction. And remember, the final words of
- 2:24a man or a woman are very important.
- 2:27We want to pay close attention to them.
- 2:29Sometimes those words involve encouragements and exhortations.
- 2:34Other times, they'd reveal insights and directions for the
- 2:38future. And, you know, Biblically, a lot
- 2:40of times the final words of a man are prophetic and looking
- 2:44into the future, as much of Jacob's words are here.
- 2:49But we don't have to wait till the end to say good things, you
- 2:51know. You don't have to wait till the
- 2:52very end till you barely have any strength or any breath.
- 2:56For the believer. We're to be going full with
- 2:59encouragement and exhortation to our spouses, to our kids, to our
- 3:03grandkids, just giving forth the encouragement to say it while
- 3:06it's on our minds and not have to wait all the way to the end.
- 3:10So we pay attention. You know, I think of the final
- 3:13words of someone like Jesus. You remember his final words in
- 3:17the book of Acts. He told the disciples as they
- 3:19were assembled together. He says, don't you leave
- 3:21Jerusalem but wait there for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Wait
- 3:26for the power, important last words.
- 3:30Why are they important for the disciples?
- 3:31Because they needed power. They needed this encouragement.
- 3:35And we're reminded we need his strength.
- 3:37You think of what Jesus is saying to us today as a church.
- 3:40Hey, live in the Spirit, not in the flesh.
- 3:44I I look at this here where he says gather together.
- 3:46Hear you sons of Jacob. That's the physical.
- 3:50Remember, many times Jacob is a reference to his flesh, his
- 3:53humanity. He says, You gather to me, I'm
- 3:56your dad. But I want you to listen to
- 3:59Israel. I want you to listen to the
- 4:01Spirit. I want you to walk in the
- 4:04Spirit. And Jacob has these prophetic
- 4:07insights on his sons moving forward.
- 4:10Notice in verse three we come first to Reuben, the son of
- 4:14Leah. You are my first born, my might
- 4:19and the beginning of my strength, The Excellency of
- 4:23dignity and the Excellency of power.
- 4:26Notice though, what he says in verse four.
- 4:28You're unstable as water. You shall not excel because you
- 4:33went up to your father's bed. You defiled it.
- 4:37He went up to my couch. You know, Jacob didn't forget
- 4:41about what Reuben did with Bilhah.
- 4:44And he was once his dad's pride and joy.
- 4:47I have a boy. Things started out so good.
- 4:50But he took a turn for the worse.
- 4:52And Jacob sees here his pride and his weakness and his lust
- 4:56and his guilt, and he just tells him you're unstable, just like
- 4:59water. You're totally unpredictable.
- 5:03We never know what you're going to do or say or how you're going
- 5:06to act. And Jacob must have thought of
- 5:09himself in the early years of his life, but different from his
- 5:12dad, Reuben would never change, his tribe would never excel.
- 5:16Why? Well, it's the same reason if we
- 5:19make the same choices, why we won't excel.
- 5:22And that is that instability to go over to James, Chapter One,
- 5:26this has been a theme. This is a word from the Lord for
- 5:28our church because this has been a theme coming up repetitively
- 5:31in our studies. And let's read it from the text
- 5:33here in James. Chapter one.
- 5:35We just read this this last weekend and again we're coming
- 5:40to it again. We're in the midst of trials, in
- 5:43the midst of difficulties. Verse two of James, one my
- 5:46brethren, counted all joy. When you fall into various
- 5:49trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience,
- 5:54but let patience have it's perfect work, that you may be
- 5:57perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
- 6:00If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all
- 6:03liberally and without reproach. It will be given to him.
- 6:07But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, For he who doubts
- 6:11is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
- 6:15Let not that man suppose he'll receive anything from the Lord.
- 6:17And here's the thing. He's a double minded man,
- 6:21unstable in all his ways. Well, Reuben is an unstable man,
- 6:27double minded. And notice Jacob brings to his
- 6:30remembrance the incident with Bilhah.
- 6:34Nothing was really done when it ha when it was ha when it
- 6:36happened. And yet Jacob never forgot it
- 6:39and it typified Reuben's life. The tribe of Reuben never did
- 6:44excel. There's not a single leader who
- 6:46came from him. He was a nothing tribe.
- 6:50They settled on the east banks of the Jordan River, where the
- 6:53land was rich for pasture. But they didn't claim any
- 6:56inheritance in the land. Instability.
- 7:00And perhaps the Lord is even speaking to you today just to
- 7:02ask for that stability. You don't need to work it up.
- 7:05You don't need to feel guilty about the past.
- 7:08But just to ask the Lord for stability, you could say today,
- 7:11I don't want to be like Reuben. I want to ask in faith.
- 7:15I don't want to double minus. I don't want to waver in my
- 7:17faith. I want God, you to strengthen
- 7:20me. Now notice in verse 5.
- 7:21Now Simeon again from Leah and Levi Aliyah are brothers.
- 7:28Instruments of cruelty are in their habitation.
- 7:32Let not my soul enter their counsel, let not my honor be
- 7:35united to their assembly. For in their anger they slew a
- 7:39man, and in their self will they hamstrung and ox.
- 7:44Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce and their wrath for it is
- 7:49cruel. I will divide them in Jacob and
- 7:52scatter them in Israel. These brothers were cruel,
- 7:58you'll remember in our study. Just one word you need to
- 8:01remember is Shechem. They were wrath and anger was
- 8:05their downfall. What?
- 8:06Not instability. But anger got the best of them.
- 8:09And how many listening to me today, perhaps even on the
- 8:12radio, just listening right now, Like anger is such a big part of
- 8:15your life and you're doing nothing about it.
- 8:18It's become accustomed. You've just been accustomed to
- 8:21lashing out an outburst of wrath or controlling people with your
- 8:24anger will take heed to the word of the Lord.
- 8:27The wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of
- 8:30God. Can I get an Amen for that?
- 8:32Just receive it. The wrath of man does not
- 8:35produce the righteousness of God.
- 8:37It does great damage. However, the tribe of Levi, you
- 8:42know there's still grace because the tribe of Levi produces Moses
- 8:45and Aaron and their descendants, and God chose by grace the
- 8:50Levites for the priesthood. It's through Levi's life that we
- 8:54see hope and grace of God. And it's true that they were
- 8:57scattered in Israel, but they were also made the priestly
- 9:01tribe. And to me that's the grace and
- 9:03love of Jesus. He's able to take the meanest,
- 9:05the toughest, the hardest person and transform them.
- 9:09No one anywhere is beyond the reach of God.
- 9:13And there's great grace even for those like Levi, who have a
- 9:16great streak of anger in their lives.
- 9:19And it wasn't because of the righteousness of the fathers.
- 9:22This tribe was chosen for the priesthood by God's sovereign
- 9:25grace. And what a beautiful name.
- 9:27Levi is, filled with hope for the future.
- 9:30Notice verse 8. Judah, another child of Leah.
- 9:34You are whom your brothers shall praise, which is what his name
- 9:37means. Your hand shall be on the neck
- 9:39of your enemies. Your father's children shall bow
- 9:42down before you. Judah is a lion's whelp from the
- 9:48prey. My son, you have gone up.
- 9:50He bows down. He lies down as a lion and as a
- 9:53lion who shall rouse him? The sceptre shall not depart
- 9:58from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh
- 10:02comes, until Messiah comes. And to him shall be the
- 10:05obedience of the people. Verse 11 Binding his donkey to
- 10:10the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine.
- 10:12He washed his garments and wine and his clothes in the blood of
- 10:16grapes. His eyes are darker than wine
- 10:19and his teeth wider than milk. Now just pause here for a second
- 10:23and just consider all the sons are hearing this stuff and
- 10:25they're probably shocked by now. And just like, whoa, what is Dad
- 10:29saying? What does he mean by all of
- 10:32this? But Judah, his name means
- 10:33praise. And Judah had problems in his
- 10:36past too. But he receives great blessings
- 10:39and a beautiful prophecy. All of your brothers will bow
- 10:43down to you. And it's a prophecy that Jesus,
- 10:45Messiah would come through Judah.
- 10:48It didn't happen for hundreds of years, but that lion has always
- 10:52been a symbol of sovereignty and strength.
- 10:55And you remember, turn over to Revelation chapter 5 with me
- 10:58Now, Revelation 5. You'll remember John in John's
- 11:01vision here in Revelation. Such a beautiful reminder of the
- 11:06sovereignty of God. It says in verse one of
- 11:09Revelation 5. And I saw in the right hand of
- 11:12him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the
- 11:15back sealed with 7 seals. And I saw a strong Angel
- 11:20proclaiming with a loud voice who is worthy to open the scroll
- 11:24and to lucid seals. And no one in heaven or on earth
- 11:28or under the earth was able to open the scroll to look at it.
- 11:30So I wept much because no one was found worthy to open and
- 11:36read the scroll, or to look at it.
- 11:38But one of the elders, verse five, said to me, do not weep.
- 11:42Notice, behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of
- 11:47David, Shiloh has come, has prevailed to open the scroll and
- 11:52loose its seals. Not only did Jacob see the lion
- 11:56in Judah, but he also saw the Lord.
- 11:58What a vision that must have been for him, That phrase until
- 12:02Shiloh comes. Jacob speaks of the scepter.
- 12:05The staff of rulership will not leave Judah until Shiloh comes.
- 12:10Shiloh comes from the same root word that we get the word peace
- 12:14from in a direct reference to the Prince of Peace.
- 12:17Jesus not only is Jesus Shiloh, but he's the one who will hold
- 12:21the sceptre and rule and reign forever.
- 12:23Remember Isaiah Chapter 9 and verse seven?
- 12:26We look at that sometimes in our study at Christmas time of the
- 12:31increase of his government and peace.
- 12:33There will be no end, and upon the throne of David over his
- 12:37Kingdom to order it and establish it with judgment and
- 12:40justice from that time forward even forever.
- 12:43Evermore Judah. What a gracious God to use him
- 12:47to bring in Messiah. Now verse 13.
- 12:50And by the way, it was an interesting thing, talking about
- 12:53his dark eyes like wine and his teeth whiter than milk.
- 12:56He must have been a good looking guy this way to describe him.
- 12:59But you know, you just be going. Dad, what's going on man?
- 13:02Can you see? Can you see?
- 13:03OK, I mean think about it. 50 years old, receiving this
- 13:06exhortation from your dad. So good.
- 13:09Verse 13. Zebulun, another son of Leah,
- 13:12shall dwell by the haven of the sea.
- 13:14He should become a haven for ships, and his border shall
- 13:17adjoin Sidon Zebian and his name means exalted house.
- 13:22And he would settle up the northern coast.
- 13:26Along the coast beach lovers around the Galilee and those
- 13:29that have gone to Israel with us you know what a beautiful area
- 13:33the Galilee is And along the coast there it's amazing,
- 13:38amazing area. Verse 14.
- 13:40Issachar. He's a strong donkey.
- 13:43How's that for a last word? You're a strong donkey.
- 13:48Lying down between 2 burdens, he saw that rest was good.
- 13:53If you like to write in your bibles, you can just write next
- 13:55to that. Lazy, he saw that rest was good
- 13:58and the land was pleasant. He bowed his shoulder to bear a
- 14:01burden and became a band of slaves.
- 14:04This a car. His name means there is reward
- 14:08and I'm sure he wasn't too excited being compared to a
- 14:12donkey. He was a strong man and his
- 14:16tribe would be workers. But while at one time they might
- 14:19have been lazy, they grew out of that became workers and
- 14:22producers for the nation. And the sons of Issachar would
- 14:27have pay attention to the signs of the times and be ready for
- 14:32what God has revealed to his people.
- 14:35Notice now Dan. Dan means he judged.
- 14:38Dan was Bilhah's son. He shall judge his people as far
- 14:44as the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent, by the
- 14:47way, a Viper by the path that bites the horses heels so that
- 14:52it's riders shall fall backward. I have waited for your
- 14:57salvation, O Lord. Dan is going to need the
- 15:02salvation of the Lord. Dan will be one of those tribes
- 15:07the lead a rebellion, and they are one of the first to produce
- 15:11idolatry to bring idolatry. Another visit we take on our
- 15:15trips to Israel is up into the area where they have this altar
- 15:19set up as if it would, as Dan brought rebellion and idolatry
- 15:23into Israel. And yet there was a prominent
- 15:26member of Dan. You'll remember Samson, and we
- 15:29read about him in the Book of Judges.
- 15:32Then he turns his attention to Gad in verse 19, the son of
- 15:37Zilpah. A troop shall tramp upon him,
- 15:40but he shall tramp triumph at last.
- 15:44Gad. His name means fortune.
- 15:46And then notice in verse 20 bred from Asher another son of Zilpah
- 15:50shall be rich. He shall yield royal dainties.
- 15:55Asher means blessed, and then Naftali notice, is a deer let
- 15:59loose again, a son of Bilha, a deer let loose.
- 16:03He gives goodly words. So Gad you see, he settles east
- 16:08of the Jordan, Asher settles in the Vertal valley area, and
- 16:13Naftali settles in the area north of the Sea of Galilee.
- 16:17Not much said among them. And then verse 22.
- 16:20The son of Rachel Joseph is a fruitful bow.
- 16:24A fruitful bow by a well. His branches run over the wall.
- 16:30The Archers have bitterly grieved him and shot at him and
- 16:36hated him. But notice his response to
- 16:39difficult situations. And that's no small thing.
- 16:42Is it that one phrase? His dad is describing the
- 16:46difficulty that his poor boy went through, and by now, no
- 16:49doubt having these years with Joseph, Joseph's being able to
- 16:53share his story first hand. This is what happened, dad.
- 16:57This is what happened here. This is what happened here.
- 17:00This is what happened here. Certainly a bittersweet time to
- 17:03hear that testimony, receiving it, allowing Joseph to share it.
- 17:08And here Jacob, because the owner of The Archers have
- 17:10bitterly grieved him, shot at him and hated him.
- 17:14He's had a hard life. We spent a lot of time studying
- 17:18this as a church. The hard life of Joseph.
- 17:20However, notice his bow remained in strength, and the arms of his
- 17:26hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of
- 17:29Jacob. From there is the shepherd, the
- 17:32stone of Israel, by the God of your Father who will help you,
- 17:37and by the Almighty, who will bless you with the blessings of
- 17:40heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
- 17:44blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
- 17:46The blessings of your Father have excelled the blessings of
- 17:50my ancestors up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
- 17:54They shall be on the head of Joseph and on the crown of the
- 17:59head of him who's separate from his brothers.
- 18:05Joseph is Rachel's first born, who Jacob established as his
- 18:09heir. And Jacob gives us the secret to
- 18:13Joseph's strength. This is the secret to your
- 18:15strength. Here you are listening to me
- 18:18read the Bible. You're seeing it in your own
- 18:20Bible open up on your lap or on your phone.
- 18:23You're seeing it with your own. You're reading the words with
- 18:25your own eyes. The Archers have bitterly
- 18:28grieved him, shot at him, and hated him.
- 18:32It's a hard life you might share in your testimony.
- 18:37You may even come up one day and share a testimony.
- 18:39And in the 5 minutes you're given, you tell us what a hard
- 18:42life you've had. That's the word you use.
- 18:44I've had a hard life. It's been a challenging life.
- 18:47But but in that hard life are 17 years that you're trying to
- 18:52share in 5 minutes, 17 years of, hey, I've, I had family issues
- 18:59and you say that I had family issues.
- 19:01But what you're describing is, hey, my brothers hated me so
- 19:04much. They wanted to kill me.
- 19:06They even planned to kill me. But God was gracious to me.
- 19:10You know, it's important that we are really careful when people
- 19:12are sharing their stories with us, that we understand that
- 19:15whatever they're sharing with us, there's something behind it.
- 19:19They may not be able to share it.
- 19:21They may not want to share it. But you read something like this
- 19:25and you're just kind of reading through your DeVos, right?
- 19:27And you're looking at it and you're like, man, yeah, Archer's
- 19:30bitterly grieved him. But some of you have a
- 19:32definition of what it is to be bitterly grieved to be tempted
- 19:37to live a bitter man the rest of your life, to have that
- 19:40temptation to even bite into, you know what?
- 19:43I deserve this, as we were learning today in our pastors
- 19:48meeting today, just talking about how the crossing the line
- 19:52from being a servant to feeling entitled is such a danger for
- 19:57pastors. It's a painter for all of us,
- 20:00but especially for pastors. Because there you are, pouring
- 20:04in and serving and look what I've done and look at all, look
- 20:06at all the hours, look at all the sacrifice.
- 20:08And then you begin. You turn a corner.
- 20:11Sometimes you don't even know you've turned it.
- 20:12And this is true for pastors. It's turned for two, For
- 20:15leaders, for Sunday school teachers, moms, dads, grandmas.
- 20:19It doesn't matter. Somewhere you cross the line.
- 20:21You're like, you know what? I deserve more than this.
- 20:26And you forget all that God has done.
- 20:30You forgot the starting point. The starting point isn't
- 20:33anywhere. Like you ran away from what you
- 20:37deserved. We we ran away.
- 20:41We were we in our revelation that moment we were born again.
- 20:44Whether it was a little child and we understood as a kiddo,
- 20:46and then we grew into it, or we got saved later in life like I
- 20:49did. I ran away from what I deserve.
- 20:53And what I deserve is eternity apart from God.
- 20:56That's the life that I live. And when I was born again, God
- 21:00rescued me from that. That's what I deserve.
- 21:04And to suddenly turn a corner, to approach my God as this is
- 21:08what I deserve. And you almost can hear heaven
- 21:10and go, Ed, what do you deserve exactly?
- 21:13Well, you know, Lord, I deserve this and I've done this and I've
- 21:16done this and don't people know? And it's like, God just let you
- 21:19keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
- 21:22And say no, you have lost sight of my son.
- 21:27You've lost sight of the sacrifice of my son on your
- 21:29behalf. You've been bitterly griefed.
- 21:35And one way to runway to deal with that bitter grief is to
- 21:38become bitter. And bitterness is so dangerous
- 21:42it defiles it destroys the person and defiles the people
- 21:46that are close to you. The Bible says so.
- 21:49Don't let bitterness take root. It's a defiling sin.
- 21:55It's also a decaying sin. And the person that you're
- 21:59bitter with, you know, you look at Joseph.
- 22:01Joseph had every reason and every mechanism to take
- 22:07vengeance upon his brothers. He had it.
- 22:12He could have seen the providential sovereign grace of
- 22:14God as God's approval. OK, Joseph, I put you in this
- 22:18place. Go for it.
- 22:20But then he would have forgotten.
- 22:22The Bible teaches vengeance as mine saith the Lord and
- 22:25vengeance was meted out on the cross Jesus Christ.
- 22:29You know the problem with vengeance and revenge is our
- 22:32definition of vengeance and revenge is never vengeance and
- 22:36revenge. It's always a little bit more.
- 22:41It's always a little bit more. We don't have a righteous
- 22:45judgment. Only God has righteous judgment
- 22:48and it's on the cross. Joseph, bitterly grieve.
- 22:51I beg you, Church, repent of your bitterness.
- 22:55It will destroy you and defile the people that are closest to
- 22:59you and love you. Bitterness, resentment, Some of
- 23:04you. You're beyond bitterness now.
- 23:05You're resenting the person, and he's got to let the Lord
- 23:10minister to your heart and comfort you and start the
- 23:12healing process. Because if you don't, you're
- 23:16going to be destroyed. We're all going to be sad.
- 23:19You have to let. You have to let the secret of
- 23:22his strength. You've got to allow the Lord to
- 23:24do his work. He says in verse 24 that
- 23:27Joseph's bow or bow remained in strength.
- 23:32The arms of his hands were made strong.
- 23:34How Verse 24 By the hands of the mighty God.
- 23:39We weren't with Joseph every moment of every day, but God
- 23:42was. We weren't Joseph.
- 23:45Joseph with every thought and every temptation and every issue
- 23:49he had to deal with. But God was We weren't with him
- 23:51when he was ready to quit, but God was.
- 23:53We weren't with him when he was rehearsing, but God was.
- 23:56We weren't with him when he was ready.
- 23:58Just like, I don't know what I don't know in every human
- 24:01capacity. We're not even told those
- 24:03moments. But God was.
- 24:05He was there, strengthening him. Mark those words, the hands of
- 24:10the mighty God. From there is the shepherd, the
- 24:14stone of Israel, by the God of your Father, who will help you
- 24:22looking at those promises that you can hold on to.
- 24:24This is a promise to you as well.
- 24:26The God of your Father's will help you, will strengthen you by
- 24:33the Almighty, who will bless you with blessings from heaven
- 24:38above. Even in part of our prayer
- 24:39tonight about every good and perfect gift comes from our
- 24:43Father above. He's ready.
- 24:47He was a fruitful bow by the well.
- 24:52He was dependent walking in faith Turn over to Psalm One.
- 24:59We have this insight living out by David as he I believe would
- 25:03be a great description of Joseph and his times of great trial.
- 25:07Psalm One. I love this such a promising,
- 25:13beautiful instruction of the direction to live our lives.
- 25:16Look at the blessed man or the blessed woman.
- 25:18Psalm. One verse one says.
- 25:21Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
- 25:25nor stands in the paths of sinners, nor sits in the seat of
- 25:29the scornful. But no, his delight is in the
- 25:31law of the Lord, and in his law he meditates day and night.
- 25:36He'll be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings
- 25:41forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not
- 25:45wither, and whatever he does shall prosper.
- 25:49And here's the alternative. The ungodly are not that way.
- 25:52They're like chap With the wind drives away verse 5.
- 25:55And therefore the ungodly will not stand in the judgment, nor
- 25:58sinners in the congregation of the righteous, because the Lord
- 26:01knows the way of the righteous. But the way of the ungodly shall
- 26:08perish. His branches are fruitful.
- 26:12God wants you to be fruitful church, that's His desire for
- 26:16you. As we've been reading with
- 26:18Jesus, another theme that keeps coming up, that it's God's will
- 26:21for you to bear much fruit, much fruit that your life is an
- 26:25overflow into other people. He wants you so strong and so
- 26:29nourished and so full of fruit that your life blesses others.
- 26:33That's a huge part of the abiding life.
- 26:35And Jesus is the joy of bearing fruit that others can enjoy from
- 26:40your life. It's so it's so amazing.
- 26:43That's God's will for your life. That's his desire.
- 26:47He's the vine. We're the branches, he says in
- 26:50John 15/8. Remember by this my father is
- 26:53glorified that you bear much fruit, not bitter fruit, not
- 26:57rotten fruit, not wrath filled fruit, not vengeance, not living
- 27:04your whole life. I'm not going to be happy until
- 27:06I get mine. It's submitting yourself,
- 27:09abiding in Christ that you might bear much fruit.
- 27:12Joseph goes down to Egypt. He follows the painful path of
- 27:17the Lord and he ends up in a place of blessing.
- 27:22He was able to save the world from famine and be a blessing to
- 27:27the world. Notice again in verse 24.
- 27:32Even though Joseph prospered abundantly, though he had the
- 27:35great wealth of Egypt, he did so with great trials.
- 27:42It says in verse 23 that The Archers bitterly grieved him.
- 27:47His bow remains, his bow remained in strength.
- 27:50The arms of his hand were made strong by the hands of the
- 27:52mighty God. But it didn't come without.
- 27:56I mean, it's even a hard to to say trials, what this brother
- 27:59went through, what he endured. Life was not always easy for
- 28:06Joseph. Life won't always be easy for
- 28:08you. For me, it's an understatement.
- 28:12But it needs to be said out loud.
- 28:15It's not going to be easy. Joseph experiences a lot of
- 28:19grief. Some of you will experience a
- 28:21lot of grief. The longer you live, the more
- 28:23grief you face. He had experienced the grief of
- 28:28his family turning against him and having no family, he
- 28:32experienced the grief of being sold as a slave.
- 28:36He experienced the grief of being falsely accused of rape.
- 28:40He experienced the grief of being thrown, spending a year
- 28:43wasting away years in prison because of false charges.
- 28:48He experienced the grief of not only being sold, but
- 28:52experiencing the deep hatred of his brothers concerning him.
- 28:59When you when you think of this, it says right here they hated
- 29:01him and that's a real pain to have hatred expressed to you
- 29:06from those you would expect to have love.
- 29:09It says that the Bible speaks of of his brothers hating him.
- 29:13Remember when he told them the dreams?
- 29:17They were jealous of him. They hated him all the more and
- 29:20hatred's so great that they conspire to kill him.
- 29:23And you think of some of the things God's bringing up through
- 29:25Jacob's final words. You think of some of the
- 29:28temptations that come your way. And then instability,
- 29:31faithlessness, anger, hatred. It is it is the story of of
- 29:37difficult, wasted lives and the grace of God.
- 29:40But it's also a warning to us as the arrows come our way, as life
- 29:45shoots us, you know, shoots at us.
- 29:47Things that hit, you know, we're always, we're always happy, man.
- 29:52Things go by, you know, we can duck here and duck there, but
- 29:55sometimes you can't duck so fast and you get hit and it hurts.
- 30:03And what might have worked in the earlier days, you're not
- 30:07fast enough and you get nailed, man.
- 30:13I never thought it would be an illustration, but I remember
- 30:15back to the day when we were hitting the pinata over here.
- 30:20And I walked away and I saw the stick coming in my face.
- 30:25And I moved, but not fast enough.
- 30:29I got hit square in my mouth, crushed my lip, broke my teeth.
- 30:35Right here in the sanctuary you go.
- 30:36What? What did they do?
- 30:37And they love. I love you, Pastor.
- 30:38I'd never do that. It wasn't on purpose.
- 30:41It was an accident. But I have a visual.
- 30:43God just gave me a visual right now in my own life.
- 30:45How fast I tried to move and I wasn't fast enough.
- 30:50That's how life is. You're moving.
- 30:53You're bobbing. You're weaving, you've this, you
- 30:55got away with that, you moved that.
- 30:57There's coming a day when you're going to move fast, as fast as
- 30:59you can, and it won't be fast enough and the arrow will get
- 31:03you. You have to deal with the
- 31:06consequence of that pain, Even an accident.
- 31:08Or maybe someone doing something on purpose to try to destroy
- 31:12you, try to hurt you, try to take you down, try to undermine
- 31:16you, lie about you, sell you out.
- 31:19You know you don't. We aren't necessarily going to
- 31:21face what Joseph did. We won't be sold by our
- 31:24brothers. But man, there's brothers and
- 31:26sisters that will sell you out. And that's painful and it's
- 31:31difficult and it's challenging. So many times, as I mentioned,
- 31:36when we're shot at, we want revenge and we want to get even.
- 31:40Who did that? Who did that?
- 31:43And we just start shooting randomly back at the direction
- 31:46it came. We do that.
- 31:48Not with, you know, arrows. You know what we do?
- 31:50We do it with words so quick, just random, just boom, boom,
- 31:55boom. I'm hurting, you know, hurting
- 31:56people, hurt people. So boom, I'm just going to throw
- 31:59it all out and I'm not going to trust in the Lord.
- 32:01And it always does more damage. We are filled with the Holy
- 32:05Spirit, and while our human nature wants revenge, it takes
- 32:10great strength not to get even. It takes great strength not to
- 32:16get even when it's in your capacity to do so.
- 32:21It requires the mighty hand of God that you choose to trust the
- 32:27Lord with the outcome. Paul would say that to the
- 32:32Corinthian church and he nailed the Holy Spirit and nailed what
- 32:35our problem is. I mean, obviously throughout the
- 32:38Bible we know our problem is us and our flesh and all that, but
- 32:41But he put some words to it. He talked about all the lawsuits
- 32:45going on in church and all the things that were going on, and
- 32:48he asked this question. He says, why won't you rather
- 32:53just be wronged and that's it? Why won't you just rather be
- 33:02wronged? Because there's a part of us in
- 33:07our flesh that we can't stand being wronged in the Spirit.
- 33:11We can trust the Lord, and He'll help minimize those feelings,
- 33:15those outbursts, those things that would so quickly take
- 33:19control over us as Joseph does. He submits himself and we don't
- 33:26know how he did this exactly because we weren't with him, but
- 33:30God was with him. We don't know if he paced his
- 33:35cell one night, just couldn't sleep.
- 33:39Sleepless night. We don't know if he cried
- 33:41himself to sleep. Like David talked about his
- 33:44tears drenching the rock that he was laying on.
- 33:46We don't know. Well, we don't know if he drove,
- 33:51you know, obviously he didn't drive necessarily a car, but
- 33:54drove over to somebody's house or something.
- 33:56Just stood out there wondering and thinking.
- 33:59We don't know. But we do know that some
- 34:05listening among me have done those very same things.
- 34:09Typed out that letter and ready to send, sent that post on
- 34:13Facebook, going to tell everybody.
- 34:15My I'm going to make sure subtly come to a prayer meeting and
- 34:19start bad mouthing your spouse or the husband that divorced you
- 34:23or the wife that divorced you. And just like starting to want
- 34:26that. No, no, no.
- 34:29This is the key. You are strengthened by the
- 34:32hands of the mighty God of Jacob.
- 34:36That's what we learned from Joseph.
- 34:38You can know the power of God. He is a restraining power in our
- 34:42lives and he is able to help us when we need self-control, when
- 34:46we're hurt or injured. And like, I like to share, and
- 34:51I've lived it out many times in my own life.
- 34:54Just because someone has sinned against me does not give me
- 34:58permission to sin against them, ever.
- 35:04Just because someone grievously lives in sin toward me does not
- 35:10give me a pass just one time. No, doesn't give me a pass to
- 35:18retaliate and sin myself in Leviticus chapter 19 and verse
- 35:2518. Why do you read through the
- 35:26Bible? Because you get to verses like
- 35:28this. Leviticus 1918.
- 35:30Let me read it to you. You shall not take vengeance nor
- 35:35bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you
- 35:38shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 35:42I am the Lord. Romans chapter 12, verse 19.
- 35:45Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give
- 35:48place to wrath, for it is written.
- 35:50Vengeance is mine. I will repay, says the Lord.
- 35:53Therefore, if your enemy's hungry, feed him.
- 35:56If he's thirsty, give him a drink.
- 35:58For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.
- 36:01For some of you right now you go, I don't know, eating,
- 36:03eating, but coals of fire. I can do that.
- 36:06No, no, no. You love you.
- 36:07He's just saying man do what the Lord.
- 36:10Just give him over to the Lord and listen to the last part.
- 36:13In verse 21. Do not be overcome by evil, but
- 36:17overcome evil by good. That's the mark of the agape
- 36:21love of God. Well, verse 27, Benjamin I in
- 36:31also child of Rachel is a ravenous wolf.
- 36:34In the morning he shall devour his prey and at night he shall
- 36:37divide the story. The spoil Benjamin he means son
- 36:40in my right hand. Tribe was very powerful.
- 36:43Went to great lengths to protect Israel.
- 36:45They produce strong mighty fighters.
- 36:47Some famous Benjamites. You Bible students might be
- 36:50reminded of King Saul and another guy named after king
- 36:54Saul. Saul who became Paul.
- 36:57Mighty Benjamite. You can see from Paul's
- 37:00personality the kind of what Benjamin produced.
- 37:05These zealous, strong. I will protect single handedly
- 37:09the cause of God if I need to. And then you look at a guy like
- 37:13Saul of Tarsus, who then becomes that same personality, but under
- 37:17the power of the Holy Spirit. Unstoppable.
- 37:20That's so good. Verse 28.
- 37:23All these are the 12 tribes of Israel, and this is what their
- 37:25father spoke to them. He blessed them.
- 37:28He blessed each one according to his own blessing and he charged
- 37:31them. Verse 29 I am to be gathered to
- 37:33my people, bury me with my father's in The Cave that's in
- 37:37the field of Ephron the Hittite, in The Cave in the field of
- 37:42Makalah, which is before memory in the land of Canaan, which
- 37:46Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a
- 37:49possession for a burial place. There they buried Abraham,
- 37:52Sarah's wife, They buried Isaac and Rebecca and his wife, and
- 37:55there I buried Leah. The field and The Cave that is
- 37:59there were purchased from the sons of Hath, Verse 33.
- 38:02And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his
- 38:05feet up into bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his
- 38:08people. What a life this man lived 147
- 38:14years old. He looked back at one point in
- 38:17his life and he remember he described himself.
- 38:19Few and evil have been my days, but that's the perspective of
- 38:23the flesh, when you live in the flesh and that's what's going to
- 38:26happen. That's how life is going to
- 38:28feel. Fuel and evil?
- 38:29Not much. That's how he started out
- 38:32grabbing his brother's heel. He was on the run, running to
- 38:35this scheme. Running to that scheme.
- 38:38Clever thought he didn't need God. self-sufficient, self
- 38:42assertive, self willed. But it's over now.
- 38:44Jacob dies. There's this is it.
- 38:46It's over. And I just think in our own
- 38:49lives, because God did grab him every once in a while, there
- 38:52were times when you see that God really got him and and brought
- 38:56him to the place of surrender and wrestle with them and
- 38:58brought him to a place. But really most of his life was
- 39:00in the flesh. But that doesn't have to be you.
- 39:04Jacob's gone. He's in the presence of the
- 39:06Lord. You know, Pastor Chuck would
- 39:10Chuck Smith would always teach us.
- 39:12I don't think it's directly from him, but he would repeat it and
- 39:15we get to repeat it. Only one life will soon be
- 39:18passed and only what's done for Christ will last.
- 39:21That's all that matters. So don't wait for your deathbed
- 39:25to make big decisions. Get right tonight.
- 39:28Don't make wait for your deathbed to encourage your kids
- 39:31or your grandkids. Do it tonight.
- 39:33Don't wait for your deathbed to go.
- 39:34You know I'll just deal with it then.
- 39:36Or, you know, I know people listening.
- 39:37I'll wait. I don't need to make a decision
- 39:39for Christ right now. I'll do it on my deathbed.
- 39:41I've heard of those stories. No, no, no.
- 39:43Today is a day of salvation. Tonight is the night.
- 39:47This is the moment God is calling you to himself.
- 39:52Whether it's a deeper surrender or you're just like looking at
- 39:54Jacob and go, man, I don't want to be like Jacob.
- 39:56I'm going to be like Joseph. I want to surrender my life to
- 40:00his providential will. I'm so much in pain.
- 40:03I know the more pain, the more strength you need.
- 40:07But it's so wrong, Ed. I know the more wrong it is, the
- 40:10more strength you need. But man, you don't know what
- 40:12they did. I know the more that they did.
- 40:14The more that you think about it, the bigger it gets, the more
- 40:16strength you need. Get your eyes and my eyes back
- 40:20on the Lord. So we can begin to think about
- 40:23the legacy we're going to leave. It's never, ever too late to
- 40:27surrender yourself, will, and immerse yourself into spiritual
- 40:32things because like Jacob, one day and we don't know what day
- 40:37it might be, You too will breathe your last.
- 40:44You too will come to terms with a life that's past.
- 40:50And you know the Lord has fullness of life for you today,
- 40:54even in the pain, even in the difficulty.
- 40:58You think sometimes, and I'll close with this, that Joseph
- 41:01like now he gets to Egypt and he's reunited with his brothers
- 41:03like everything was well and it's all healed.
- 41:06Don't you think that for a moment, the memories and the
- 41:10trauma and the difficulty always much better than it used to be?
- 41:17Don't you think for a moment, then, that we just turn a page
- 41:20and Joseph forgets his past? It's going to be a battle in his
- 41:24life. It's going to the enemy's going
- 41:26to use it against him. He has real pain, He has real
- 41:30scars, He has real issues that the Holy Spirit is going to
- 41:34continue to help him along. And we're all, as we learned
- 41:38with Jacob, right? We're all walking wounded,
- 41:41limping along, making it in the strength of the Lord.
- 41:45Amen. So, Lord, we just thank you for
- 41:47the testimony tonight with our brother.
- 41:49Bless him and encourage him. We thank you, our testimony with
- 41:52our brother Joseph and Jacob and these sons.
- 41:55Lord, there's some sons we want to be like, and there's some
- 41:58sons. We don't want any.
- 41:59We don't want to go their path. We don't want to be lazy or
- 42:03stubborn, want to be strong. We want to be surrendered.
- 42:08We want you to uplift us with your mighty hand.
- 42:11Lord, I pray for the bitterness that's around us.
- 42:18That started with an offence. It continued with unforgiveness,
- 42:25salted with a little anger, peppered up with a few people
- 42:30that agree and stirred up the pot.
- 42:34It then became bigger than it was.
- 42:36And then there's some resentment some frustration then these
- 42:41feelings of getting even before you know it bitter.
- 42:48And it's such a horrible place to be Lord.
- 42:52Such a waste of time. And so begin to I just think of
- 42:59that that passage where the prophet they were making Stew
- 43:05and they. And then it said there's poison
- 43:07in the pot and and you took he took meal and he threw it in and
- 43:11it was healed and and I just thank God of the healing you
- 43:14want to do in the pot tonight. The poison that's among us.
- 43:18The poison of anger. The poison of bitterness.
- 43:20The poison of revenge. The poison of vengeance the
- 43:24poison of pride and self-sufficiency.
- 43:27The poison of well, I can get through and I'm fast and I've
- 43:30dodged before and and it's that last arrow man pierces the
- 43:35heart. So I just pray a blessing over
- 43:38our church. Lord.
- 43:38Those that are here. Of course, those that aren't
- 43:41here, God, that you would just begin to release your peace
- 43:45among us. Lord I.
- 43:47We just by the power of your Holy Spirit, we bind, Lord, the
- 43:50bitterness and the temptation, and we we ask you, God, to take
- 43:54it away, and then we release peace among us.
- 43:57Lord, a peace that passes all understanding that by your
- 44:00spirit God, you just begin to work on the inner woman, the
- 44:04inner man. That they won't even be able to
- 44:07talk themselves out of it before they leave.
- 44:09They won't even be able to rehearse things in their mind
- 44:12that'll bring them back to the pit.
- 44:13That they won't even be dwelling on the things that have been
- 44:16bond holding them in bondage. But they'll just have that
- 44:19release Lord, and that freedom to walk in the newness of life.
- 44:24That you begin the healing process, Lord.
- 44:26You begin the scabbing process. You begin, Lord, to put back
- 44:29that the broken bones that bring so much pain and begin to heal
- 44:37your church. Lord, heal your people, that we
- 44:39might walk in agape love, walking in forgiveness, walking
- 44:46in freedom, looking forward to what you have.
- 44:51And so God we leave tonight, uplifted and encouraged by these
- 44:56last words of Jacob, Kind of obscure for some of them, but
- 44:58they speak to the heart, Lord, and we receive them as your word
- 45:02that will not return empty in Jesus name.
- 45:05Amen. We.
