- 0:04Speaker 1: Our buddy, Red's big leaguer Will Benson joining us now
- 0:07Speaker 1: getting ready for hoop season to kick back and watch
- 0:10Speaker 1: while he's training hard all off season. Two, Will, good
- 0:12Speaker 1: to see you. How you doing. I can't quite see
- 0:14Speaker 1: the number? Is that a three?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yes? AI nice?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I like that a lot?
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yes?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Bringing me back.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I'm good, I'm blessed man. How are y'all doing?
- 0:26Speaker 1: We're good, We're good. I mean I want to start
- 0:27Speaker 1: with because we haven't talked to you since. How was
- 0:30Speaker 1: the end of the season, the postseason? I know it
- 0:32Speaker 1: was quick in terms of getting bounced by a team
- 0:35Speaker 1: that's headed to the World Series most likely soon, But
- 0:38Speaker 1: what was that like for you guys to crack the
- 0:41Speaker 1: postseason and all that craziness in the last week.
- 0:46Speaker 4: It was an incredible experience, especially for our group, right,
- 0:49Speaker 4: Like we've been kind of itching to get in there
- 0:53Speaker 4: the past two years and in twenty three we really
- 0:55Speaker 4: had a chance, but to really come through in twenty
- 0:57Speaker 4: five and just experience that, I think we'll pay the dividends,
- 1:02Speaker 4: you know, in the future. Obviously, playing against the Dodgers
- 1:05Speaker 4: who are current playing credible, we saw the best of
- 1:10Speaker 4: the best, so we know what it's going to require
- 1:13Speaker 4: to advance.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I want to ask a little bit about you.
- 1:17Speaker 5: You started off in triple A, got brought back up,
- 1:20Speaker 5: you were a player of the Week in May, went
- 1:23Speaker 5: back down in August, and then brought back up for
- 1:25Speaker 5: a September run. Just talk a little bit about the
- 1:27Speaker 5: people can understand how hard that really is, the toughness
- 1:31Speaker 5: and the mental fortitude you really have to have, and
- 1:34Speaker 5: you know how you have to build your mind in
- 1:37Speaker 5: the right right way thinking, knowing like, hey man, I'm
- 1:39Speaker 5: a big leaguer of what is going on here. To
- 1:41Speaker 5: just talk a little bit about that and how you
- 1:42Speaker 5: fought through it.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I'm very thankful that I'm grounded in my faith.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I wouldn't be where I am if that weren't the case.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Like you said, it takes a It already takes a
- 1:56Speaker 4: missile fortitude of play in the big leagues, but then too,
- 1:59Speaker 4: you know, ask the player to get bounced up and down,
- 2:02Speaker 4: and honestly, at times you you didn't even know what
- 2:05Speaker 4: the reason was for.
- 2:08Speaker 2: That's tough and and the.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Hardest part of it all was seeing it how it
- 2:12Speaker 4: affect affected my wife. She's so strong, and you know,
- 2:18Speaker 4: she was doing a lot you know, just to just
- 2:20Speaker 4: to come see me, uh see me play, and so
- 2:24Speaker 4: to experience that. It was honestly a blessing in disguise
- 2:28Speaker 4: because I saw the business side of things. And also
- 2:33Speaker 4: it is dry. It drives me, you know, to to
- 2:36Speaker 4: be the best player that I can possibly be. I'm
- 2:39Speaker 4: very thankful for the opportunity, you know that I'm always
- 2:42Speaker 4: giving and and what whatever form of fashion that is.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And so it also helps me keep my perspective, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 4: as as I go along in this journey.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Looking back on how would you have handled it differently?
- 2:55Speaker 6: All the ups and downs? Because I went through the
- 2:58Speaker 6: same thing, ups and downs, success, no success. My faith
- 3:02Speaker 6: was what grounded me, so that was like a huge
- 3:05Speaker 6: way to go through it. But how would you have
- 3:06Speaker 6: handled it all differently?
- 3:10Speaker 2: You know, I actually reflected on this a couple of
- 3:12Speaker 2: days ago, and I'm grateful to say, man, I don't
- 3:16Speaker 2: I don't really think I would have handled it any
- 3:19Speaker 2: any differently. I would say potentially maybe.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And uh, you know some of my interactions when I
- 3:26Speaker 4: was getting sent down, I wish I was just more quiet.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I wish I didn't say anything at all. I think
- 3:30Speaker 2: there is power and silence, So.
- 3:34Speaker 4: That'd be like the only time that that's probably only
- 3:37Speaker 4: thing I would do because.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I was so routined.
- 3:41Speaker 4: And I was just so you know, locked into like
- 3:44Speaker 4: the preparation and the process of things.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And I feel like as I was.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Going up and down, I maintained that, you know, regardless
- 3:51Speaker 4: if I was in a big leaguer of triple A,
- 3:52Speaker 4: and that's the most important thing, right to be able
- 3:54Speaker 4: to say, hey, I prepare for you know, prepared for
- 3:57Speaker 4: for the day.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And I was very consistent with that.
- 4:00Speaker 6: You said there's power in silence. There's power and results too.
- 4:03Speaker 6: So when you win Player of the Week, you know
- 4:05Speaker 6: you know what you gotta That speaks loud enough for yourself.
- 4:09Speaker 6: But I want you to I want you to take
- 4:11Speaker 6: to I want you to take me to the series
- 4:13Speaker 6: against the Dodgers. Like when people looked at it, when
- 4:16Speaker 6: we looked at it ahead of time, it was like, whoa,
- 4:18Speaker 6: this is lopsided. But the Reds got Hunter Green going ooh.
- 4:22Speaker 6: You know, looking back at it, man, that was kind
- 4:24Speaker 6: of lopsided. But the eighth inning, you guys were making
- 4:28Speaker 6: a run. What was that feeling like in the moment
- 4:32Speaker 6: before you guys got into the series I've never met
- 4:36Speaker 6: a big leaguer who's like, this team's better than us.
- 4:39Speaker 6: We got no chance. So I'm not expecting that from you,
- 4:42Speaker 6: but I'm expecting like, what did you guys look How
- 4:45Speaker 6: did you guys look at it beforehand? And then also
- 4:48Speaker 6: take me to like when you guys were making that
- 4:50Speaker 6: run and you were showing the rest of the world, Hey,
- 4:53Speaker 6: the Dodgers have a little bit of a shaky underbelly
- 4:56Speaker 6: of their of their bullpen.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I think one like you're saying, we kind of
- 5:04Speaker 4: exposed some things I feel like with that bullpen in
- 5:06Speaker 4: that series. But you know, I think when we went
- 5:10Speaker 4: into it, it was like we're playing with house money, right,
- 5:14Speaker 4: Nobody had even expected us to be here, and we
- 5:18Speaker 4: had an incredible run at the end of the year
- 5:21Speaker 4: to put us in that position that we were in.
- 5:23Speaker 4: And so I know that when we were going into it,
- 5:27Speaker 4: we full whole hardly knew that when we played our
- 5:30Speaker 4: type of baseball, it didn't really matter who we were playing.
- 5:34Speaker 2: We had a fair shot to win. And like you said,
- 5:36Speaker 2: we had h G on the mal.
- 5:38Speaker 4: You know, our guy who is who've been you know, posting,
- 5:41Speaker 4: putting up all season, and so we went into that
- 5:44Speaker 4: whole series very much confident, you know, and our ability
- 5:48Speaker 4: to to shake the world, you know, and actually take
- 5:51Speaker 4: that series.
- 5:53Speaker 2: As you saw what had happened.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Uh that that wasn't necessarily the case unfortunately, but we
- 6:01Speaker 4: we got we got, we got it going, you know
- 6:05Speaker 4: in both of those games. I feel like later in
- 6:07Speaker 4: the in the game. Also outstanding performance by Yamamoto on
- 6:13Speaker 4: that second game. But even when he came out, we
- 6:16Speaker 4: started to really get some things, you know, cracking in
- 6:18Speaker 4: the later innings and you know, we started to smell
- 6:22Speaker 4: blood in the water, but they just found their way
- 6:25Speaker 4: to trickle out of it, and uh, and take the series.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Drum us Roki Sazaki man, talk a little about him.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Did you prepare for him? This guy?
- 6:35Speaker 5: I mean absolutely listen absolutely filthy picture talk talk a
- 6:41Speaker 5: little bit about that situation.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Really had only seen him maybe once or twice you know,
- 6:50Speaker 4: on MLB network or whatever, throwing, So I wasn't too
- 6:54Speaker 4: familiar with his arsenal and until that, until that game,
- 6:59Speaker 4: you know.
- 6:59Speaker 2: We faced him and Jesus that was impressive.
- 7:05Speaker 4: And then, uh, I've actually been pretty tuned into the
- 7:09Speaker 4: the postseason this year as opposed to other ones, And
- 7:13Speaker 4: I've been particularly watching the Dodgers and uh to see
- 7:16Speaker 4: him come into these games. I think he had a
- 7:18Speaker 4: little bit of a scuffle. I want to say it
- 7:20Speaker 4: was his last one or second to last out there,
- 7:23Speaker 4: but he's he's good and and dominant with his secondary
- 7:29Speaker 4: and then his fastball is one hundred, so you got
- 7:34Speaker 4: you know, if you got to go up there on
- 7:35Speaker 4: an approach, if you're anywhere hands a taint on what
- 7:38Speaker 4: you want, you're out.
- 7:40Speaker 2: If he's honestly, even if you are aggressive and he executes,
- 7:43Speaker 2: you're probably out. So you know you're you're.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Gonna have a tough at bat that I'll just leave it,
- 7:48Speaker 4: leave it at that. I mean, he's he's incredible. I
- 7:51Speaker 4: mean shooting you could really you know, Dave Robertson, he
- 7:55Speaker 4: just has so many cars to play with, right, I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 4: this guy was a starter and he's closing games with ease.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So if I was, you know, if I'm Dave, Dave,
- 8:04Speaker 4: I'm like, man, I really have so many tools and
- 8:07Speaker 4: so many options to use, and it's really neat when
- 8:10Speaker 4: you have, you know, in your bullpen.

- 9:15Speaker 6: You said neat, kind of like, oh, that's neat. They
- 9:18Speaker 6: get all these guys. Do you feel like it's kind
- 9:20Speaker 6: of like. I don't want to say unfair because that's
- 9:24Speaker 6: misleading or that's leading you. But do you feel like
- 9:28Speaker 6: it's like, man, why do these guys just keep getting
- 9:32Speaker 6: all this stuff out here? Because you guys got a
- 9:34Speaker 6: great pitchy stad You guys, your team pitches really well.
- 9:38Speaker 6: I thought your offense should have been better than they
- 9:40Speaker 6: were this year. It didn't come around like I thought.
- 9:42Speaker 6: But like, do you look over at the Dodgers in
- 9:45Speaker 6: a series like that before the game, before the series
- 9:48Speaker 6: or even after and go, that's kind that kind of sucks.
- 9:52Speaker 6: I just kept bringing dudes out of the bullpen.
- 9:55Speaker 4: You know, this is why I love baseball as opposed
- 9:59Speaker 4: to any sport there is. You can have the best
- 10:04Speaker 4: players and still lose. It's just it's just they were
- 10:10Speaker 4: playing at all ceiling, like they were playing at the
- 10:12Speaker 4: peak of their ability. And obviously when they do that,
- 10:17Speaker 4: they are the best. But again, like I said, when
- 10:21Speaker 4: when we play at our best, we can really beat anybody.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And that's why I love baseball. Do't matter how big
- 10:27Speaker 4: you are, how small you are, how strong you are,
- 10:29Speaker 4: how little you are, how fast you throw, you have
- 10:32Speaker 4: an opportunity to win. Obviously when you have an incredible
- 10:36Speaker 4: skill set and incredible talent, those chances are.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Slightly higher.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but any any day of the week, you could
- 10:46Speaker 4: lose like or you could win.
- 10:48Speaker 2: So I don't ever look over at the.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Other dugout in any type of intimidation or why do
- 10:54Speaker 4: they get all of these players? I think those players
- 10:56Speaker 4: earn that right, earn that money, get that bread before you,
- 11:02Speaker 4: and uh yeah, they're gonna be good for a long
- 11:05Speaker 4: time for sure.
- 11:07Speaker 6: What do you got for us? We just had Kevin
- 11:09Speaker 6: Pollar on here. He's like, dude, nothing's crazy about this
- 11:13Speaker 6: series anymore. Blue Jays are gonna finish in six the Dodgers.
- 11:17Speaker 6: You know, what do you have? What do you see
- 11:19Speaker 6: from this postseason that you're like, I love that? And
- 11:22Speaker 6: what do you see going forward?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Honestly, I love what the game is just because of
- 11:28Speaker 2: how like, you know, competit.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Like I said, this is my first time really watching
- 11:32Speaker 4: it just because I was in it, and I love
- 11:35Speaker 4: how competitive it is. I love honestly the it's a
- 11:39Speaker 4: little bit more offensive if you guys can see.
- 11:41Speaker 2: And it's incredible because I feel like the pitching is
- 11:43Speaker 2: so good.
- 11:44Speaker 4: But yet we see these like the game last night
- 11:47Speaker 4: where Toronto put up, you know, an incredible amount of Honestly,
- 11:51Speaker 4: the last three games, I think that they've outscored their
- 11:54Speaker 4: team the Seattle like twenty one to six or something
- 11:57Speaker 4: crazy like that.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I just love and I love the ends and outs of.
- 12:03Speaker 4: The games and and and the approaches, and so it's
- 12:05Speaker 4: cool to see, especially from Toronto these past two games.
- 12:09Speaker 4: It's just to see how they've been able to execute
- 12:11Speaker 4: their approach against really good pitching. It's something that you know,
- 12:16Speaker 4: I'm learning, and you can see the consistency from it
- 12:18Speaker 4: at bats of how it really is. I think Springer
- 12:20Speaker 4: said it in his interview last night. It's it's the
- 12:22Speaker 4: next man up mentality. But within that you can see
- 12:25Speaker 4: how they really are working at bats, you know, to
- 12:28Speaker 4: to collectively get you know, a certain plus of runs
- 12:31Speaker 4: in one inning. And the other series is with Dodgers
- 12:35Speaker 4: and Brewers. Honestly, I I want I want to see
- 12:40Speaker 4: the Brewers do it to be, to be honest, and
- 12:42Speaker 4: and they're getting kind of smacked around a little bit rightfully. So,
- 12:46Speaker 4: I mean, the Dodgers are playing credible and and and
- 12:50Speaker 4: and they and they you know how it is in
- 12:51Speaker 4: the playoffs if you're hot and you're hitting all silver.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Everything is going right for you. That's what looks like
- 12:55Speaker 4: for the Dodgers too, everything is going right for them.
- 12:58Speaker 4: And I think in the end, and in the end,
- 13:01Speaker 4: I do believe it'll it'll be. I do believe it'll
- 13:04Speaker 4: be Blue Jays and and the Dodgers in the end.
- 13:09Speaker 4: There's no way to Bruce come back, right, that'll be
- 13:12Speaker 4: that'd be history, right, if I'm not mistaken.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's happened once. Oh four red sizes. You were
- 13:18Speaker 1: probably a little tyke, but yeah, forty one opportunities. It's
- 13:22Speaker 1: happened one time with a comeback, and that was the
- 13:24Speaker 1: two thousand and four Red Sox. You were probably quite young.
- 13:29Speaker 2: At that time. Yeah, I don't even know what years that.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Two thousand and four. What way year were you oring?
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I was nineteen ninety eight, so yeah, I was
- 13:38Speaker 2: a pub.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you were a year a little six year old.
- 13:41Speaker 1: But otherwise that's never happened.
- 13:43Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, yeah, it's canned for them ggs. So
- 13:48Speaker 4: it's gonna be the Dodgers for sure. And then, like
- 13:51Speaker 4: I said, it's gonna be tough on between. I mean,
- 13:53Speaker 4: cause Seattle's really good, right, Their pitching is excellent. But
- 13:57Speaker 4: like I said, even with the with the great pitching man,
- 13:59Speaker 4: I've just seen the Blue Jays really just put together.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Good at bad after good at bad after good at that.
- 14:06Speaker 4: So and and I think, I see what was stroting
- 14:08Speaker 4: last night, and that's that's their guy, right, that's their
- 14:10Speaker 4: that's their number one, and they put it on him.
- 14:12Speaker 4: So I do think Seattle will answer back. I think
- 14:17Speaker 4: they put a night right.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Max one tonight, Yeah, it's too too Game five,
- 14:22Speaker 1: they keep going. Bryce Miller is is pretty good. They
- 14:25Speaker 1: got four good starters, technically five if if Brian Wu
- 14:29Speaker 1: is healthy and might appear for them.
- 14:31Speaker 4: So exactly, exactly, exactly exactly, I do think Seattle will
- 14:36Speaker 4: take tonight. I mean, that'd be incredible if the Blue
- 14:39Speaker 4: Jays Quinn three straight in Seattle. But again, they have
- 14:42Speaker 4: to go back to Toronto in this tough environment. Fun environment
- 14:48Speaker 4: for sure, but it's a tough one. So they have
- 14:50Speaker 4: their their hands full.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Well, when you so, you said, you're watching a lot
- 14:54Speaker 1: of postseason games. When you watch like approach, why certain players,
- 14:59Speaker 1: what do you see and do you say, okay, what
- 15:01Speaker 1: do the Reds need to do to get to that point?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Right?
- 15:05Speaker 1: Because now the team got to the postseason, what do
- 15:07Speaker 1: they need to do to be you know, a Final
- 15:08Speaker 1: four type team.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I believe it. It has to be. I think
- 15:16Speaker 4: when pitching is so good in the postseason, right, you
- 15:19Speaker 4: have to teeth and claw for runs because defense is
- 15:23Speaker 4: gonna win championships. And I do think we played I
- 15:25Speaker 4: think we had a few eras, but I think we
- 15:28Speaker 4: had Yeah, I think.
- 15:29Speaker 2: We had an era that might have cost us.
- 15:30Speaker 4: But think about Taoska's era that he had the first game, right,
- 15:35Speaker 4: we have got to capitalize on that situation and put
- 15:40Speaker 4: up you know, three from that mistake, because you can
- 15:45Speaker 4: never get comfortable with just one run or two runs.
- 15:49Speaker 4: And I believe I'm I don't think we ever took
- 15:52Speaker 4: the lead in any of those games, but.
- 15:54Speaker 2: As you can see, it was a shootout.
- 15:56Speaker 6: Man.
- 15:56Speaker 2: It was who could put up, you know, the most
- 15:59Speaker 2: runs against pitching.
- 16:00Speaker 4: And like I had mentioned already about the Blue Jays,
- 16:03Speaker 4: I mean, even if the Dodgers are doing it as well,
- 16:05Speaker 4: like you can see, they tack on runs you know,
- 16:09Speaker 4: you know, and bunches low key, right, I mean they
- 16:11Speaker 4: had a tight one, I think it was Game two,
- 16:14Speaker 4: but they put up five runs. You gotta answer back,
- 16:18Speaker 4: and so how do you answer back? You collectively put
- 16:21Speaker 4: together grade at bat after grade at bat against a
- 16:24Speaker 4: plus pision.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I'm gonna give you a little praise, but I'm also
- 16:28Speaker 5: gonna give myself a little praise here. I was a
- 16:30Speaker 5: thousand point scorer in high school basketball. I'm sure you
- 16:33Speaker 5: were too. I might I want to ask you a
- 16:35Speaker 5: question because I know you're supposed to go to Duke
- 16:37Speaker 5: to play baseball and basketball, like you still got a
- 16:39Speaker 5: little b ball skills? Any of you play in the
- 16:41Speaker 5: offseason anything? Can we meet up and try and get
- 16:44Speaker 5: a little five on five going?
- 16:45Speaker 2: Kids?
- 16:45Speaker 3: Let's go?
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, no one. I would love to.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I need it because I feel like the agility that
- 16:52Speaker 4: you get from just playing is the best you know
- 16:55Speaker 4: for your body. Yeah, it's I still it's funny. My
- 16:58Speaker 4: son is starting to get the basketball. So we got
- 17:01Speaker 4: a little little hoop in the backyard. I shoot all
- 17:02Speaker 4: the time.
- 17:03Speaker 3: You can.
- 17:04Speaker 4: You can raise it up and lower it down whenever
- 17:07Speaker 4: you want. So, look, man, have you ever out here
- 17:09Speaker 4: in Arizona or i'me ever where you are?
- 17:12Speaker 2: Just hit my phone. I'm I'm itching to play.
- 17:15Speaker 5: They used to call me the Mountain Round of rebound.
- 17:17Speaker 5: I'm just saying, I'm just sir, ch'all's that's all.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I'm just letting you know well and in my in
- 17:23Speaker 2: my competitive spirit, that strikes no fear.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Of me, so nor should it should. I'm here.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Nobody ever called him, no nicknames other than the Todd
- 17:38Speaker 6: father or.
- 17:40Speaker 4: My father or yo, crazy story, crazy stort, not really crazy.
- 17:46Speaker 4: But when you won the home run derby, I was there.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I was in that junior home run dirty watching. Yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 4: that's incredible. That's my first time hearing the top fall
- 17:57Speaker 4: the chance on all that. It was crazy, man, I
- 18:00Speaker 4: was there.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, So we're linked in a unique way.
- 18:04Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 18:05Speaker 1: That's during the breaks. That's always fun too, when they
- 18:07Speaker 1: do the high school kids battling in the in the
- 18:10Speaker 1: breaks during the dirty Yeah cool.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's cool. Now he's playing well.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Last one. Now there might not be Papa shot there.
- 18:19Speaker 6: So if you want to play basketball, I can play
- 18:21Speaker 6: basketball against you. I'll beat you and Papa shot, but
- 18:24Speaker 6: playmakers classic, Like can you talk a little bit about that,
- 18:28Speaker 6: what that means and to you and like just some
- 18:32Speaker 6: of the stuff that goes on. I think the one
- 18:34Speaker 6: year were there, there was Papa shot, but maybe I'm
- 18:36Speaker 6: maybe I'm mistaken.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Yes, So the Players Trust next year is actually the
- 18:41Speaker 4: their thirtieth anniversary of you know, the establishment, and it's
- 18:46Speaker 4: been such a blessing because because not only myself, but
- 18:49Speaker 4: other players in the league benefit from the Players Trust.
- 18:54Speaker 4: It is where they help us with our in isituatives
- 18:56Speaker 4: in our hometowns and our nonprofits and things that we do.
- 19:01Speaker 2: And they also have events of their own.
- 19:03Speaker 4: You know that we attend and we have an impact
- 19:06Speaker 4: in the communities in the cities that they visit. So yeah,
- 19:09Speaker 4: like you see on the screen there, the Playmakers Classic
- 19:12Speaker 4: is on the eighteenth, and it's really just an opportunity
- 19:16Speaker 4: for you to meet people within the Trust, meet up
- 19:18Speaker 4: the players who have nonprofits and actually, cool story, there
- 19:23Speaker 4: was somebody from Georgia that I didn't even realize that
- 19:27Speaker 4: they were so closely knitted to people I knew in
- 19:31Speaker 4: Georgia and we did an event together and it was incredible.
- 19:34Speaker 4: So it's a great networking opportunity if you ever want
- 19:37Speaker 4: to explore, you know, those nonprofit adventures. And it's cool
- 19:42Speaker 4: too because it's not just for us players. There's an
- 19:44Speaker 4: opportunity for fans philanthropists and even business leaders who want
- 19:47Speaker 4: to get involved, you know, with the players trust.
- 19:50Speaker 2: So it's a great event as well. If you guys
- 19:52Speaker 2: want to.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Attend, that's a great call because we often talk about
- 19:56Speaker 1: the entertainment component. Hey, you get to hang with players.
- 19:58Speaker 1: They're there, they're enjoying the night, right, It's very casual
- 20:01Speaker 1: for everybody to have conversations. But the networking part too, right,
- 20:04Speaker 1: if you have you know, if you're charitable, you have initiatives,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you want to talk to the guys about what they're doing.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Like that is the form to do it. So good call. Well,
- 20:13Speaker 1: great to see you, man. Really appreciate the insight and
- 20:17Speaker 1: enjoy the off season. It goes quick as you know it.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Of course, y'all have a good rest of your day,
- 20:22Speaker 4: great weekend. I'm glad say a special times you guys today.
- 20:25Speaker 1: It was fun. Yeah, yeah, this was fun. You're the man.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Thanks Will We'll talk to you soon, all right, peace.

- 21:39Speaker 1: us right now on Foul Territory, pitch for the Rays
- 21:42Speaker 1: Brewers and putting out some really cool content on Twitter
- 21:45Speaker 1: at seth Underscore three seven seven three. Seth, First off,
- 21:49Speaker 1: how you doing and are you enjoying being a content
- 21:53Speaker 1: creator these days?
- 21:56Speaker 3: I'm great, guys, Thanks for having me. I don't know
- 21:59Speaker 3: about content.
- 22:00Speaker 7: I feel like I'm just an old, washed up ball
- 22:02Speaker 7: player who puts stuff on social media. So kids, I
- 22:05Speaker 7: don't think I'm so old I don't know what I'm
- 22:07Speaker 7: getting out there, but I'm having a good.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Time with It's good. So I want to give everyone
- 22:12Speaker 1: an example right off the jump. So you did a
- 22:14Speaker 1: series about your favorite ballparks, So can you give us
- 22:18Speaker 1: some context on what you put together on Twitter and
- 22:21Speaker 1: maybe mix in a few of your favorites and what
- 22:23Speaker 1: stood out?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Sure?
- 22:25Speaker 7: So basically, you know, I have people ask me all
- 22:29Speaker 7: the time, where did I enjoy playing and things like that,
- 22:31Speaker 7: and you know, you see the ballparks, but you don't
- 22:33Speaker 7: really see some of the inner workings of at the
- 22:36Speaker 7: clubhouse and the city. And you know, when you're in
- 22:39Speaker 7: the minor leagues, I know, now it's different. I think
- 22:41Speaker 7: they take care of the kids a little better than
- 22:44Speaker 7: they took care of us. We were kind of on
- 22:45Speaker 7: our own to find living situations. So I was kind
- 22:48Speaker 7: of putting all that together in the score and talking
- 22:51Speaker 7: about which were my favorite and some of the experience
- 22:55Speaker 7: I had in some of those cities, you know, And
- 22:57Speaker 7: it wasn't one to one, like I guess Charleston was
- 22:59Speaker 7: like number three and uh, Tampa was like number five. Well,
- 23:02Speaker 7: obviously I wanted to be in Tampa more than I
- 23:04Speaker 7: wanted to be in Charleston because that.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Was the big leagues.
- 23:06Speaker 7: But during the time that was that was uh in
- 23:11Speaker 7: at the level, that was a better place to be,
- 23:13Speaker 7: if that makes sense.
- 23:15Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. So do the kids think you're cool
- 23:17Speaker 6: now or are they? Like, jeez, nobody does the top
- 23:20Speaker 6: five list.
- 23:21Speaker 7: Bro, No, I'm just fat coach sets and I don't
- 23:24Speaker 7: have hair anymore. So it's getting worse by the day.
- 23:27Speaker 7: So yeah, so.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Your only redeemable trade is that you were a big leaguer.
- 23:32Speaker 3: They don't even care about that, man, they don't they
- 23:35Speaker 3: you know, kids, they don't.
- 23:36Speaker 7: They don't give a crap. I have no idea. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 7: I just tell them. I'm like, look, you don't look
- 23:40Speaker 7: up my stats. Just I threw one hundred and three
- 23:42Speaker 7: miles an hour, Derek Jeter's oz for five off of me,
- 23:46Speaker 7: and I hit two for two as a lefty off
- 23:48Speaker 7: Randy Johnson.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Don't look up anything else.
- 23:51Speaker 5: There.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You know that.
- 23:53Speaker 6: That's definitely what you need to That's what you need
- 23:55Speaker 6: to tell them because they want they want the eleven
- 23:57Speaker 6: second highlights. But as you do this stuff, no, go ahead,
- 24:01Speaker 6: go ahead.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I was gonna say.
- 24:03Speaker 7: They go When I say that, they say, who's Randy Johnson,
- 24:06Speaker 7: So I just I lose it.
- 24:08Speaker 6: So that's fair, that's fair. As you're as you're doing this,
- 24:13Speaker 6: as you're you're helping, because I've seen I've seen you
- 24:15Speaker 6: on Twitter, how you're you know, you're coaching, you're kind
- 24:19Speaker 6: of you buck against some of the things that are
- 24:21Speaker 6: just like general norms in the game that you're like,
- 24:23Speaker 6: wait wait, wait wait wait, And you come from a
- 24:26Speaker 6: different era, what's the one thing that you would say
- 24:29Speaker 6: you can help youth baseball players to be the best
- 24:33Speaker 6: that they can be to get to the big leagues,
- 24:36Speaker 6: Because I assume all of them want to get to
- 24:37Speaker 6: the big leagues, even though most of their parents just
- 24:39Speaker 6: want them to get like some like po Dunk scholarship
- 24:43Speaker 6: that probably is going to get decommitted in a year anyway.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Well, you know, getting getting to the big leagues, I
- 24:50Speaker 3: mean that's one in a million. You guys know that.
- 24:54Speaker 7: But what I try to tell kids is, you know,
- 24:56Speaker 7: baseball is a team sport, play black group individuals. And
- 25:00Speaker 7: you guys have heard that before. But I want less
- 25:04Speaker 7: me and more we if you can celebrate your teammates
- 25:09Speaker 7: and instead of just being all about yourself, you're gonna
- 25:11Speaker 7: have more help along the way. Less people will feel
- 25:15Speaker 7: separated from you and enjoying your own success, and you
- 25:18Speaker 7: just kind of enjoy the game a little bit better.
- 25:21Speaker 7: I know that that's not necessarily a secret to making
- 25:24Speaker 7: it to the big leagues, but what it is is
- 25:26Speaker 7: it makes the game better as a whole. I don't
- 25:28Speaker 7: know when it became really fashionable just to make the
- 25:31Speaker 7: other team look really bad or just to kind of
- 25:33Speaker 7: be a jerk on the field. Just go out there
- 25:35Speaker 7: and have fun and do it the right way, because
- 25:38Speaker 7: it's such a grind to be great.
- 25:41Speaker 3: You know, it's an everyday thing.
- 25:43Speaker 7: And if it's it's constant drama and constant aggression as
- 25:47Speaker 7: far as towards the other teammates, that's tough. I mean,
- 25:50Speaker 7: you guys know, when we would play in the big leagues,
- 25:52Speaker 7: after the game, we'd all go out together. It didn't
- 25:54Speaker 7: matter if we were yelling at each other each other.
- 25:56Speaker 7: We were all at the same places after the game.
- 25:58Speaker 7: So it is a brotherhood and I think more of
- 26:01Speaker 7: that needs to be for the forefront.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it's harder to do now with the social media
- 26:07Speaker 5: out there. As we all know and enjoy, it's a
- 26:10Speaker 5: gift and a curse. You know, you go out and
- 26:11Speaker 5: next thing you know, people are you know, they're you know,
- 26:14Speaker 5: blah blah blah whatever. You can't get away with a
- 26:16Speaker 5: lot of the things with hanging with your buddies and
- 26:18Speaker 5: just trying to enjoy a night out. But my question
- 26:21Speaker 5: to you is, what do you think about the game now?
- 26:24Speaker 5: What like along those lines you were talking about a
- 26:26Speaker 5: little bit. You like all the changes to the game.
- 26:28Speaker 5: You see all these new rules being put out the
- 26:30Speaker 5: ABS system. Talk to me a little about what you
- 26:33Speaker 5: like and what you don't like about the you know,
- 26:35Speaker 5: the new game of baseball going on.
- 26:38Speaker 7: I think we have to be careful and speeding it
- 26:42Speaker 7: up and kind of dumbing it down a little bit.
- 26:45Speaker 7: The game is the game special and it can be
- 26:48Speaker 7: as intricate as you want. Right now, you know, we're
- 26:51Speaker 7: asking hitters to hit the ball a long way and
- 26:52Speaker 7: swing hard, and we're asking pitchers to throw hard and
- 26:55Speaker 7: spin the ball. We're not asking them really to throw strikes,
- 26:57Speaker 7: and we're not asking batters to get on base. It's
- 26:59Speaker 7: really kind of the two easiest things you want professionals
- 27:01Speaker 7: to do. You know, guys can throw hard. We're profession
- 27:06Speaker 7: we're talented so you're not really asking them to.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Do something.
- 27:12Speaker 7: I always say the game is more talented than it's
- 27:16Speaker 7: ever been right now, but it's not as skilled. I
- 27:19Speaker 7: know when I was pitching and and I was coming
- 27:22Speaker 7: up as a twenty two year old in Tampa when
- 27:25Speaker 7: we were terrible playing the Yankees, who Alex Roder making
- 27:29Speaker 7: more money than our whole our whole team, we got
- 27:33Speaker 7: to break at nine in the order with Miguel Cairo
- 27:36Speaker 7: hitting three zero six.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Everybody else was just a monster.
- 27:38Speaker 7: They were hitting home runs, high batting averages, Guys were
- 27:41Speaker 7: taking second bases and things like that, and so the
- 27:43Speaker 7: game was The game was definitely different, and I do
- 27:46Speaker 7: think some changes.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Because you do have to continue to evolve.
- 27:49Speaker 7: But I don't, you know, it's kind of one of
- 27:51Speaker 7: the things like you tell teenagers, don't don't just fall
- 27:54Speaker 7: into the traps of what everybody's doing, because then you
- 27:56Speaker 7: use your identity. I don't think major League Baseball should
- 27:58Speaker 7: lose its identity by trying to to just make itself
- 28:01Speaker 7: more sexy at this moment. I think there's a lot
- 28:05Speaker 7: more ways that we could do a better job. Is
- 28:07Speaker 7: maybe market our players a little bit better on the
- 28:11Speaker 7: on the social medias and things like that.
- 28:12Speaker 3: I think the NFL does a.
- 28:13Speaker 7: Really good job of marketing their players, and I think
- 28:15Speaker 7: more along the line of that, you know, we do
- 28:18Speaker 7: have to give in a little bit. I know a
- 28:19Speaker 7: lot of older guys don't like the endgame interview and
- 28:21Speaker 7: things like that, but we're gonna.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Have to give in a little bit on that.
- 28:24Speaker 7: But I really just don't don't like the loss of
- 28:26Speaker 7: identity and the loss of the skill of the game.
- 28:30Speaker 6: All right, I want to hit back on what you're
- 28:32Speaker 6: talking about the stadiums. I've visited quite a few more
- 28:35Speaker 6: stadiums in you so I loved. I loved how you
- 28:38Speaker 6: just kept, like, you know, you kept showing everybody a
- 28:41Speaker 6: different stadium. Get a little more detail into it for
- 28:44Speaker 6: anybody of our audience that didn't read it or didn't
- 28:47Speaker 6: follow your tweets when you were talking about all the
- 28:49Speaker 6: different stadiums.
- 28:51Speaker 3: So we kind of we I think me, me and
- 28:54Speaker 3: my team.
- 28:55Speaker 7: Of my buddies, we broke it down into how how
- 29:01Speaker 7: the playing service was, how the front office was, and
- 29:05Speaker 7: then how the coaching staff was.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Then your living situation.
- 29:08Speaker 7: So for for example, you know you're in Triple A Durham,
- 29:13Speaker 7: the living situation is usually for me, I was up
- 29:17Speaker 7: and down a lot. So for me, it was some
- 29:20Speaker 7: holiday in or days in or whatever, seven extended stay,
- 29:24Speaker 7: so it wasn't that bad. But then the front office
- 29:26Speaker 7: was amazing because they understood your situation. They try the
- 29:30Speaker 7: best to help them out with you know, if they
- 29:32Speaker 7: needed to get your hotel or whatever they wanted to do,
- 29:34Speaker 7: or if they you need some extra appearances for some
- 29:36Speaker 7: extra money, they were great. And then you know, you
- 29:40Speaker 7: kind of ranked how how that was because a lot
- 29:42Speaker 7: of people don't understand. It's you know, we're people too,
- 29:46Speaker 7: and we have lives and we have feelings, and you know,
- 29:49Speaker 7: if there's no good place to eat and you're out
- 29:51Speaker 7: of comfort in some city, you don't know where you are,
- 29:53Speaker 7: it's really hard to you know, shut it down and
- 29:55Speaker 7: be ready to play the next day or just kind
- 29:57Speaker 7: of get in your comfort zone. So some of these cities,
- 29:59Speaker 7: you for instance, Charleston's one of my favorite cities in
- 30:02Speaker 7: the country, and I just loved everything about it, and
- 30:05Speaker 7: I still go there and visit.
- 30:06Speaker 3: But for a.
- 30:10Speaker 7: Twenty year old who's making nine hundred dollars a month
- 30:13Speaker 7: trying to get an apartment where I get an apartment
- 30:16Speaker 7: for eight hundred dollars a month in a town or
- 30:19Speaker 7: in a part of town where you know. Every now
- 30:21Speaker 7: and then I just get a knock on the door
- 30:22Speaker 7: from a nice working lady to see if I was
- 30:24Speaker 7: wanted anything, and I was like, get out of here,
- 30:26Speaker 7: my girlfriend's coming over.
- 30:28Speaker 3: So you know, you.
- 30:30Speaker 7: Helping these situations where you live in the lower minor
- 30:34Speaker 7: leagues that you're really just kind of struggling to get by,
- 30:37Speaker 7: and these cities, in these different places that have different
- 30:40Speaker 7: people can either help you or make it harder.
- 30:44Speaker 6: All right, Now we got to go to your team
- 30:46Speaker 6: that Actually I would have said your picture on Baseball
- 30:49Speaker 6: Reference would have been a raise hat, but your Baseball
- 30:52Speaker 6: Reference picture is Milwaukee, so I was kind of I
- 30:56Speaker 6: was surprised at that, but I remember playing against you
- 30:58Speaker 6: in Durham and and not again, I wasn't when you
- 31:02Speaker 6: played against played for the Rais and the big Leies,
- 31:03Speaker 6: but more in Triple A. So my question to you
- 31:06Speaker 6: is one the Brewers, where are they? Where are they at?
- 31:10Speaker 6: How do you feel about this postseason? But also the
- 31:14Speaker 6: fact that your nickname I think was the janitor because
- 31:17Speaker 6: you'd pitch in any situation. Now I think everybody's a janitor.
- 31:23Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I was out there cleaning up masters. I
- 31:27Speaker 7: threw kind of whenever wherever, and uh that that's kind
- 31:32Speaker 7: of what they kind of call me. I like big
- 31:34Speaker 7: Red better, but you know, at least the janitor was
- 31:37Speaker 7: getting paid a little bit. So yeah, Milwaukee for me
- 31:40Speaker 7: is my favorite place. I loved it there. I got
- 31:46Speaker 7: to start a little bit. But then kind of in
- 31:48Speaker 7: that eight season when we broke, you know, kind of
- 31:51Speaker 7: the streak of not making the playoffs, that had a
- 31:53Speaker 7: real magical run and I had a big role, and
- 31:56Speaker 7: I really related well with the blue collar city be
- 32:00Speaker 7: in from West Virginia myself and really just kind of
- 32:02Speaker 7: the same kind of people and just having big moments.
- 32:06Speaker 4: You know.
- 32:06Speaker 3: I have a game one sixty one, I came in
- 32:08Speaker 3: for Jeff Soupon. I threw four innings. I think I
- 32:11Speaker 3: threw like, I don't know.
- 32:12Speaker 7: Sixty four pitches and fifty nine of them were fastballs,
- 32:16Speaker 7: and I blew everybody away and just kind of locked
- 32:19Speaker 7: us up to where we ended up tying the Mets
- 32:22Speaker 7: for the playoffs. And then the next day is where
- 32:24Speaker 7: you you know, I'm Eric, I've seen I'm sure you've
- 32:26Speaker 7: seen the home run where Braun hits the home run
- 32:28Speaker 7: and I don't you might even notice. I'm the guy
- 32:30Speaker 7: in the bullpen who is jumping up and down catching
- 32:32Speaker 7: the ball with Mota. But that was just really kind
- 32:36Speaker 7: of one of those those special seasons that you know,
- 32:40Speaker 7: I love being the Milwaukee Brewer. I still go back
- 32:44Speaker 7: to the park every now and then. And you know,
- 32:46Speaker 7: my my my wife, who wasn't around during those times,
- 32:49Speaker 7: she goes, will anybody recognize you? And I said, probably not.
- 32:53Speaker 7: And as we're walking through the parking lot, somebody yells out, yo,
- 32:56Speaker 7: big Red, and I was like, I couldn't have paid
- 32:58Speaker 7: somebody to do that better on her.
- 33:01Speaker 3: It was good.
- 33:02Speaker 7: I still fuying a beer down on Water Street. So
- 33:05Speaker 7: it's it's people people, People really care. And you know, Eric,
- 33:09Speaker 7: you played there during a big, big year that it was.
- 33:11Speaker 3: It was nice.
- 33:11Speaker 7: But as far as this year, it's it's it's really
- 33:14Speaker 7: kind of disappointing down to the Dodgers.
- 33:17Speaker 3: But you know, the Dodgers are really good. There's not
- 33:19Speaker 3: really much you can say.
- 33:20Speaker 7: I mean in milwaukee's really good too, but I mean
- 33:23Speaker 7: you face you face them starting pitching, like like the
- 33:25Speaker 7: Dodgers are throwing at them right now.
- 33:26Speaker 3: It's really tough.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you there, they're out match right now.
- 33:31Speaker 1: In the series, we'll see if things turn around. But
- 33:33Speaker 1: either way, that is cool. That's smooth too, uh for
- 33:37Speaker 1: wifeh where you're like, yeah, I don't know if anyone
- 33:38Speaker 1: will recognize me big Red with um.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Anyway. Anyway you want to go get dinner. That's good. Good.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I like that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Well it worked, it worked out.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, that's good.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Uh, well's that? It was awesome having you on man,
- 33:55Speaker 1: great talking shop doing your thing. Love what you're putting
