Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #149 - Dinesh D'Souza vs. Alex O'Connor: Do the Gospels Contradict Themselves?
Transcript
- 0:00Dinesh D'Souza and Alex O'Connor had a pretty heated exchange regarding the
- 0:04veracity of the Bible. Did it contradict itself?
- 0:08Are there places in there that it contradicts themselves?
- 0:11Can we trust the Bible? I'm going to look at this. I want to take a quick look
- 0:14at this because it was very interesting and you'd think I would fall on the
- 0:19side of Dinesh D'Souza, but I don't exactly. And we're going to see why. Here we go.
- 0:23Times another New Testament writer says that the family had traveled to Egypt.
- 0:27I don't think this is an attempt at metaphor or allegory as i would
- 0:29say of genesis whether you think that is or not i would say that in the
- 0:32case of the gospels we can agree that on at least some instances this
- 0:35is a clear attempt at mundane history this is not attempt at writing some
- 0:38kind of metaphor to explain a truth that's otherwise unknowable to the human
- 0:41mind it's a very straightforward attempt to record what actually happened and
- 0:45they contradict each other okay before we keep going there are four gospels
- 0:48the canonical gospels matthew mark luke and john matthew mark and john they
- 0:53just write it as they go. They just say, this is how it is.
- 0:56The only one that even gives us an explanation of why they're doing it is the
- 1:01gospel of Luke, the author of Luke.
- 1:04And he is a doctor from what we can gather. He was a physician.
- 1:08He traveled with Paul. But at the beginning of Luke's gospel, he writes this,
- 1:12chapter one, verse one, in as much as many have undertaken to compile a narrative
- 1:17of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the
- 1:21beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us.
- 1:26It seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time
- 1:30past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
- 1:36that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
- 1:39All right, he's the only one that tells us why he's even setting out to put
- 1:43pen to paper. But let's continue because you would think I would think I would
- 1:47be on the side of Dinesh and arguing for there are no contradictions in the Bible.
- 1:51But Dinesh doesn't say that exactly. He kind of acquiesced to this proclamation
- 1:57by Alex saying there are contradictions. But let's continue.
- 2:01They contradict each other because they're written by four different people. Sure.
- 2:05So let me ask you this. If God were writing it, I'm quite sure he would have written it once.
- 2:10He would need four. Sure. So some of them are wrong then. No.
- 2:13Okay, so when you say they're wrong, let's consider Luke's gospel for a minute.
- 2:18Luke is a medical doctor.
- 2:19Luke is not present at the events being described.
- 2:23Luke is virtually in the position of Thucydides riding the Peloponnesian War.
- 2:28Now, Thucydides did fight in the war, but in most of the events described by
- 2:31Thucydides in the Peloponnesian War, he wasn't there. Making them very unreliable, right?
- 2:35No, on the contrary. It is, in fact, the most reliable account of the Peloponnesian
- 2:39War that historians have.
- 2:40Let's not say that it is reliable, though. No, what I'm trying to say is that
- 2:44when you're talking about historicity, and you're talking about historicity
- 2:47now in the ancient world.
- 2:50You have to recognize that these people are not, these people are not approaching
- 2:53it as modern historians. Luke is going around.
- 2:57So Dinesh, he says that he is not a biblical scholar.
- 3:01He's not claiming to be a biblical scholar when he's doing this.
- 3:04He has more just philosophical arguments and why he argues for the existence of God.
- 3:10He uses that. He doesn't get into the nitty gritty of the Bible.
- 3:13There are things that Alex calls out because Alex is very versed in the Bible.
- 3:17And he says verse by verse, this over, this says here, this says this over there, they don't line up.
- 3:22And Dinesh doesn't even know at all what he's talking about in some instances.
- 3:27And when we get to the gospel writers, I like Dinesh's kind of approach in a
- 3:33sense that he's kind of coming at it with maybe a layman's term in this of just
- 3:38like someone reporting the news and a witness to an event.
- 3:42If everybody sees a car crash, they're not all going to say,
- 3:44if they're looking at from all different perspectives, they're not going to
- 3:47say the exact same thing.
- 3:49But then some people say, well, the Bible, they're all using the same source.
- 3:53So they are colluding. They're getting together.
- 3:56Everything says the exact same thing. But then at the same time,
- 4:00they're saying there's contradictions in it.
- 4:02You can't have your cake and eat it too.
- 4:06Because what Alex says about the contradictions in one part as opposed to the other.
- 4:12Dinesh, he acquiesces. He said that there are contradictions.
- 4:16I would say there are not. And as history unfolds, we always find out that something
- 4:21explains something further.
- 4:22There are things that seemingly contradict. I agree with that.
- 4:26When we talk about history, in the beginning of Luke's gospel,
- 4:29when he talks about governors in place and the census happening at Jesus's birth,
- 4:34that we don't have corroborating evidence of outside the Bible to defend it
- 4:40and kind of uphold it and support it yet.
- 4:44There's some things that we might not have exactly, but we always,
- 4:48it seems like people put the Bible on one, like one table and say like elevate it.
- 4:55And then they don't, they don't treat other historical works the same way that they treat the Bible.
- 5:00The Bible itself is a historical work. The guys didn't get, sit down and say,
- 5:04I'm writing the Bible, everyone. Here we go.
- 5:06Luke didn't just say, all right, you got me on camera. I'm going to start writing the Bible.
- 5:09No, he was writing just an account of the life he witnessed from the people
- 5:16he gathered kind of information from.
- 5:18So it would be different if they all just said the exact same thing, which they don't.
- 5:24Well, I want to continue. So let me ask this very straightforwardly then.
- 5:27Okay. Luke says that after the birth of Jesus, the family fled to Egypt.
- 5:32Matthew says that they went to the Jerusalem temple. Are they both correct or is one of them wrong?
- 5:37Who the heck cares? I mean, look. Okay. Well, first of all, Dinesh is just going with like, who cares?
- 5:42We don't need to get into the minutiae, like the very granular thinking details
- 5:48of everything of what it's saying.
- 5:50I would say that, yeah, we do. the Bible should not contradict.
- 5:54If he is who he is and the Bible is the word of God, it shouldn't contradict itself.
- 5:59But that's not going to destroy my faith if someone points out something that
- 6:04seems like it contradicts it.
- 6:06Because my faith isn't like that our interpretation right now and how we see
- 6:11the Bible and we have all the manuscripts, we don't have the very first things that they wrote.
- 6:16We don't have the autographers of what came from the gospel writer's hands.
- 6:20We have copies of a copy of a copy of a copy, but we, having so many copies,
- 6:26we can get to kind of what it said at the very beginning when it was first penned.
- 6:31But Alex saying that there is no contradiction.
- 6:33I mean, the Alex saying there is contradictions between like Matthew and Luke
- 6:37regarding the birth narrative.
- 6:40Why, why, because if Jesus was born, why, why did they either have to go to
- 6:45Egypt or they, they, they go to the temple?
- 6:48First of all, the narratives of Matthew and Luke are different times.
- 6:52Matthew is like, let me make sure I get this straight. Matthew is when Jesus is a little bit older.
- 6:58When you see Jesus as born, you don't see him being swaddled in a manger or
- 7:03putting in, just being right when he was born.
- 7:06You see the Magi coming, which is within two years after his birth.
- 7:10So they're different timeframes.
- 7:12Luke is rather when Jesus is actually born because the shepherds are the ones who show up.
- 7:18So then within two years time frame, they could have went to the temple and went to Jerusalem.
- 7:24And then in Matthew's gospel, what he renders is they fled to Egypt whenever the Magi came.
- 7:31And then they were told in a dream to flee to Egypt. And that's what happens.
- 7:35They're talking about two different times. It's not the exact day or date that
- 7:40this is all happening. So I had to point that out.
- 7:43This is very, very good exchange between these guys. I just want to wrap it
- 7:47up with one last thing with him. Oh, I do.
- 7:49Let me say why what you care about is...
- 7:57Is not only trivial, but indicates a kind of unwillingness to try to get what
- 8:04the text is trying to communicate. I'll tell you why I don't think it's trivial.
- 8:06Because I think that the reason why Luke may have invented the flight to Egypt, he tells us.
- 8:11Luke says, when he records the flight to Egypt, and then they return from Egypt,
- 8:15he says, this is so that we can fulfill the prophecy from Hosea chapter 11,
- 8:19out of Egypt, I shall call my son.
- 8:21Now in Hosea, God is talking here about the nation of Israel. Okay.
- 8:26I want to wrap it up with this because this is the verse that Dinesh is not aware of.
- 8:32He doesn't know about this prophecy that Matthew, and I think Alex had it wrong.
- 8:38It was Matthew who uses this verse because the biblical authors,
- 8:43they don't have an American mindset that is heavily influenced by Greek thought
- 8:49and linear thinking and just thousands of years of Western culture. This is 2,000 years ago.
- 8:56They don't have that same. It's not the same type of culture.
- 8:58They see the world is more secular.
- 9:00It repeats over and over. It's not like a one long line happening.
- 9:06It's something happens followed by a greater fulfillment.
- 9:10And the authors of the New Testament, they were Jewish. Luke wasn't Jewish,
- 9:14but he was more than like, I argue he's proselyte.
- 9:17He was a proselyte, formerly a Gentile, became Jewish, but he could have just
- 9:21been a Gentile, but he's not just a full-blooded Jew. But there are arguments
- 9:25between that Matthew has the gospel. Let me see if I get this straight.
- 9:29The Matthew, the gospel writers that they were just thinking in this.
- 9:33This one, a prophecy in the Old Testament says this, here's the fulfillment stamp.
- 9:39Boom. You know, there we go. You got it. No, it's rather they're interpreting,
- 9:43they're pulling out of kind of like hints of what is happening in the Old Testament.
- 9:47And it's fully more revealed in the New Testament.
- 9:49A lot of things catch people off guard. A lot of things catch people off guard.
- 9:54All right. All right. So if you've enjoyed this video, hit this link and I will
