- 0:01One of the qualities that Swami Vivekananda emphasized is
- 0:05fearlessness. We may wonder why courage and
- 0:09fearlessness are such important elements in our lives.
- 0:12If we live a relatively safe external life and don't engage
- 0:18in extremely risky behaviour. We may also wonder why they are
- 0:22important elements for the spiritual seeker.
- 0:26First, with respect to the external life, there's really no
- 0:31truly safe existence. If we constantly spend our time
- 0:36and energy worrying about whether we will be able to earn
- 0:39a living, whether the food we eat is healthy, whether we are
- 0:43taking care of our bodies correctly.
- 0:46If we can approach other people and socialize with them without
- 0:50being rejected or even made the butt of humor, we will quickly
- 0:54find that we live in a state of what the existentialists call
- 0:58nausea. This is a state where we are
- 1:02constantly afraid, anxious, and unprepared to deal with the
- 1:07situations that arise in our lives.
- 1:10This does not have to go to the level of life and death
- 1:13experiences such as soldiers face in warfare or dealing with
- 1:18a pandemic. In our town, we're even dealing
- 1:21with local bullies who haunt our schools and neighborhoods,
- 1:24threatening violence if we do not do what they demand of us.
- 1:29Yet it might rise to that level of existential fear,
- 1:32particularly if we have not taught ourselves how to face
- 1:36these uncertain or even dangerous situations.
- 1:40Fear tends to call upon us those things which we fear as we set
- 1:45up a vibratory pattern that attracts the object of our
- 1:49fears. With respect to the spiritual
- 1:53seeker, many people believe that meditation, deep contemplation,
- 1:59inward spiritual focus cannot be a cause of fear and therefore
- 2:05they cannot appreciate why courage is a desired and even a
- 2:09required element in the spiritual practice.
- 2:14They imagine spirituality to be filled with peace, joy and
- 2:18well-being. And of course, there are such
- 2:22times that come to spiritual seekers during the development
- 2:26of the sadhna. But spirituality also requires
- 2:30us to confront old habits, face down tendencies that have driven
- 2:35us in the past, and may bring about tension between the
- 2:39spiritual seeker and those people with whom he has built
- 2:43his past external life. But it can go even further.
- 2:48As new energies pour into the seeker, as chakras open, as new
- 2:53insights arise, there can arise serious imbalances that can lead
- 2:57to mental imbalance, emotional disturbance, vital disruptions
- 3:03and physical breakdowns which can lead to illness or death.
- 3:08It is one reason that the guidance of an experienced
- 3:12teacher is highly recommended so that the seeker can more or less
- 3:16safely traverse the inner landscape and find some kind of
- 3:21balance at each stage. One of the elements of achieving
- 3:25fearlessness or courage is the element of faith in the divine
- 3:30power and grace that is actually carrying out the
- 3:33transformations. The more we can accept that they
- 3:37are working for the long term result we aspire for and are
- 3:42there to provide us guidance, support and protection, the
- 3:46easier it is to develop the kind of fearless attitude needed,
- 3:52Sviro Bindu observes quote. Faith and courage are the true
- 3:58attitude to keep in life and work always and in this
- 4:03spiritual experience also in moments of trial.
- 4:08Faith in the divine protection and the call for that protection
- 4:13at all times. The faith that what the divine
- 4:15wills is the best. End Quote reference Sri Orobindu
