- 0:13Brought to you by the hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist Are.
- 0:39You the kind of person that has intrusive thoughts, you know,
- 0:42the ones where the thought pops into your head and then you have
- 0:45this kind of emotive reaction to it or you feel like it needs a
- 0:48whole long discussion inside your head.
- 0:51Well, a lot of people have these intrusive thoughts and you don't
- 0:55need to beat them or tackle them or work with them every single
- 0:59time a thought comes up. I was working with a client that
- 1:03had lots of intrusive thoughts that were connected to
- 1:06criticism, judgement and shame and they felt that whenever
- 1:10those thoughts came up, it was just either a battle to try and
- 1:14counter it or they just had to deal with those thoughts.
- 1:17So actually, this hypnosis session uses 2 powerful
- 1:21metaphors that can be really helpful.
- 1:24Most people these days get lots of emails, but you don't have to
- 1:27read every e-mail that you receive.
- 1:29Some of it is spam or junk, and either it goes automatically
- 1:33into those folders or you can flag it and put it in those
- 1:37folders. Or if it's a newsletter that you
- 1:39subscribed to years ago, you can unsubscribe and you can think of
- 1:44your thoughts like that. That thoughts can be intrusive
- 1:47and good. If you have an epiphany, an
- 1:50idea, some incredible thought that you can do great, that's an
- 1:56intrusive thought, but it's a good one.
- 1:58That would be like a really unexpectedly positive e-mail.
- 2:01But equally, it might be an intrusive thought, which is the
- 2:05equivalent of a phishing scam, in which case you're not going
- 2:08to give that any attention at all.
- 2:10And likewise, using the garden metaphor, weeds will grow in a
- 2:14garden. It requires no effort to do
- 2:16that. But that doesn't mean that
- 2:17you're a bad gardener, and it doesn't mean that you have a bad
- 2:19garden. What doesn't make sense though,
- 2:22is to feed the weeds, because then you're going to have more
- 2:25of them and they're going to get bigger.
- 2:27So there's a few metaphors in this hypnosis session that can
- 2:29be really useful. And it's part of a hypnotic
- 2:33experience. So if you like the idea of
- 2:36releasing some of those intrusive thoughts and not
- 2:39having to do anything about them, then I think you're going
- 2:42to get some value from this particular session.
- 2:44So find a nice, comfortable, calm place, the kind of place
- 2:48where you're not going to be disturbed.
- 2:50Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 3:16you breathe in, breathe in that feeling of calm relaxation.
- 3:23And as you exhale, feel a wonderful sense of tension,
- 3:30stress, or worries leaving your body as you exhale, breathing in
- 3:38and breathing out. Noticing that the deeper you
- 3:44breathe, the more resourceful you feel.
- 3:50And the longer you exhale, the more of those unwanted feelings
- 3:58or sensations you can release. And even if that's just tension
- 4:03or stress, worries or even certain thoughts echoes, just
- 4:13allow them to leave your body in your outward breath that's in
- 4:26deeper and deeper and more comfortable, relaxed and notice,
- 4:34but with your eyes closed, how much more you can focus on the
- 4:39sound of my voice. As if the outside world is
- 4:44disappearing. As if you can gravitate and
- 4:51shift to a place where powerful changes happen.
- 5:00It's natural for people to experience trance like states
- 5:04all the time. Sometimes it's reading a book
- 5:11and not noticing that you're turning a page.
- 5:16Sometimes it's just drifting off into a Daydream or doing
- 5:21something you've done so many times you can do it on
- 5:24autopilot. And in doing so, doesn't it feel
- 5:30sometimes like time is distorted?
- 5:35You don't even realise what you're doing, and yet it gets
- 5:39done to awaken all of those parts of the brain that know how
- 5:44to go into that state. A wonderful state where there's
- 5:50nothing you need to do and yet things feel like they're
- 5:55changing. That's it.
- 6:03And as you breathe in and breathe out, I want you to use
- 6:08the power of your imagination to imagine a garden.
- 6:19And not just any garden, a magical garden.
- 6:27And just imagine there is a desk and a chair in that garden, a
- 6:34very comfortable chair. Just imagine resting and
- 6:40relaxing in that chair. Allow your body to sink into
- 6:45that chair and tension slowly melts away, each breath taking
- 6:54you deeper into calm, giving you that drifting, floating, sinking
- 7:00feeling, that state where your mind can learn new ways of
- 7:06being. And as you continue to relax,
- 7:11you may notice that thoughts will come and go, like leaves
- 7:17being blown in the wind. And that's perfectly natural
- 7:23because the goal isn't to stop thoughts, it's simply to change
- 7:29the way you relate to them. And I want you to imagine a
- 7:35computer on that desk in front of you there in the garden.
- 7:42And I want you to imagine, imagine what it would be like if
- 7:48this garden and this desk is almost like a quiet private
- 7:56control room in your mind. And from this safe place you can
- 8:03observe your thoughts from a distance without being caught up
- 8:07in them, almost as if they are messages appearing on a screen
- 8:15or plants growing the garden. You are simply the observer.
- 8:23Calm, neutral and at peace. And now, on the screen of that
- 8:32computer, I want you to consider it your mental inbox.
- 8:39Almost like an e-mail account, and without you needing to do
- 8:43anything, messages arrive automatically.
- 8:50And just imagine, some of these emails are important, genuine
- 8:55messages that need your attention, care and a thoughtful
- 8:59reply. But most are spam, scams and
- 9:06junk. Or newsletters that might have
- 9:09been useful ones but now are no longer of interest.
- 9:17And just as you wouldn't blame yourself for receiving spam,
- 9:22there's no need to blame yourself for intrusive thoughts.
- 9:26They simply arrive. It's not personal, it's just the
- 9:31way the system works. And here you have choices and
- 9:38discernment. You can read what matters and
- 9:43delete what doesn't. And you can unsubscribe from
- 9:49anything that no longer serves you, or put things into the junk
- 9:54folder or block folder with a single click.
- 10:01And each time you let a thought go or mentally put it into that
- 10:07delete folder, you're training your mind to know this isn't
- 10:13worth my energy. It's just a thought, not a fact,
- 10:21and if you've ever returned to an inbox after a long break, it
- 10:25can feel overwhelming to go through all of those emails.
- 10:30But once you do, and the filter knows what to put into a clutter
- 10:36folder, a spam folder, a junk folder, when you unsubscribe
- 10:41from all those things you don't want to see anymore, then your
- 10:46mental inbox of thoughts becomes lighter, clearer and calmer.
- 10:59I want you to imagine setting rules on your inbox, trusting
- 11:07your intuition, which is the computer, to only put it front
- 11:15of mind if it's really important and every time it isn't.
- 11:23You're teaching that internal system to put it straight into a
- 11:29junk box, a spam folder. The next time a similar thought
- 11:34comes up as you can, consider your intuition like a highly
- 11:42trained personal assistant to filter out the thoughts you
- 11:48don't need to know and only put forward the ones that are of
- 11:55utmost importance. So you can close the computer
- 12:00now knowing that your intuition is doing that hard work for you.
- 12:08So imagine stepping out of the chair and now enjoying the
- 12:14garden of thoughts. Consider this a beautiful,
- 12:20fertile garden, a place designed for flowers, fruit, trees, herbs
- 12:29and all the positive, useful, nourishing thoughts.
- 12:36But as with any garden, weeds will grow, and sometimes they
- 12:42arrive suddenly and sometimes they creep in slowly.
- 12:49Weeds and even unwanted insects represent intrusive thoughts.
- 12:58They're just like any garden. Sometimes they're more common in
- 13:03a particular season or time of year, if there's a period of
- 13:08life that you're going through which is stressful or intense.
- 13:14Meat might be like a season of more weeds and more insects, but
- 13:21you understand something profound.
- 13:24If you feed them with worry, with fear, with attention, with
- 13:30shame, then they grow stronger and they multiply.
- 13:35But when you simply notice them without feeding them attention
- 13:42or emotion, they wither, they fade and they disappear.
- 13:52Instead, when you choose to water and nurture the flowers,
- 13:57and when you give care to the fruit trees, the whole garden
- 14:03thrives. Colourful blossoms and delicious
- 14:07fruit, the scents of herbs and flowers filling the air.
- 14:16Your attention is sunlight and your emotion is water and you
- 14:20get to choose where to shine and where to pour your energy.
- 14:27No gardener would feed and water the weeds.
- 14:34So from today forward, whenever an intrusive thought appears,
- 14:40you can simply notice it and think I'm having the thought.
- 14:46That reminding yourself that it's only a thought, you don't
- 14:55jump straight to the meaning or the implication.
- 15:01You tell yourself I'm having the thought.
- 15:05And because it's just a thought, like it's just an e-mail or just
- 15:09a weed, you get to decide what to do with it.
- 15:14If it's important, you deal with it.
- 15:18If it's a nice thought, give it gratitude, appreciate it.
- 15:23But if it's like spam in the inbox or a weed in the garden,
- 15:28you don't have to reply to it and you don't have to feed it.
- 15:33You can let it be and turn your focus to something better
- 15:43because you're spending less time on those unuseful or
- 15:48intrusive thoughts. You really appreciate and notice
- 15:53a helpful, kind, encouraging thought.
- 16:01And you will want to give your time, your attention, your
- 16:03nurturing to those thoughts. Thoughts that make you feel
- 16:08inspired, motivated, grateful. Thoughts that help solve
- 16:14problems before they happen. And therefore those are the
- 16:18thoughts that grow stronger. And just like spam filters get
- 16:23smarter the more you use them. Your mind learns quickly which
- 16:29thoughts deserve your attention and which ones are best ignored,
- 16:34deleted, or unsubscribed from. And just as the strongest
- 16:41flowers outgrow the weeds, your positive thoughts will soon take
- 16:49up more and more space, so that intrusive thoughts like weeds or
- 16:55junk mail fade quickly and quietly into the background.
- 17:08So as you wander around that garden, see the flowers and
- 17:13notice hardly any weeds, and I wonder if you can wonder about
- 17:19the future. Wonder how it would feel to
- 17:22imagine that next time an intrusive thought arrives, you
- 17:28can smile, maybe even with a sense of humour, knowing it's
- 17:35just spam, just a weed, and you get to choose what to do with
- 17:39it. And that choice makes you feel
- 17:43free. Free to focus on what matters,
- 17:48free to nurture positivity and free to live your life without
- 17:55being held hostage by unwanted, unuseful thoughts.
- 18:06I want you to imagine seeing yourself one year from now,
- 18:11happy, and the kind of relationship you want.
- 18:18I want you to see that version of you that has hardly any of
- 18:22those intrusive thoughts that bother you because you've
- 18:27trained your brain to automatically de weed them or
- 18:32put them in the junk folder before they have an opportunity
- 18:37to bother you. And notice how much more happy
- 18:42you are, secure you are, and that the quality of life has
- 18:48gone up. That's it.
- 18:55So now imagine opening that laptop, that computer, and
- 19:00seeing a spam box, a junk folder filled with emails that you
- 19:07never need to read, but your actual inbox is filled with
- 19:13useful thoughts that create useful emotions.
- 19:21To leave this place, you leave a garden full of flowers and fruit
- 19:26and a computer with a nice clean inbox.
- 19:33But before you leave, just pick one fruit from one of the trees
- 19:39and consider this fruit pure, distilled resourcefulness.
- 19:46But when you imagine the taste, the flavour, the texture, just
- 19:52imagine it is filling your body up with a wonderful feeling of
- 19:56resourcefulness, giving you a sense that whatever resource you
- 20:01need. Creativity, motivation, pride,
- 20:08or even gratitude. It comes easily because you feel
- 20:10so resourceful. And then you leave the garden,
- 20:15this control room, and imagine floating all the way back to
- 20:20your physical body. So take a deep breath in through
- 20:23your nose and out through your nose.
- 20:28Wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 20:30Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 20:35from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 20:40Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 20:48Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910.
- 20:52Wide awake. Wide awake.
- 20:55Wide awake. Thank you so much for joining me
- 21:03on today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 21:06And if you've enjoyed this show or got some benefit from it, you
- 21:11may know of one other friend or family member that may also
- 21:16benefit from this hypnosis session.
- 21:19In which case I'd like to ask a favour of you.
- 21:21And that is if you could spend 10 seconds to share this episode
- 21:26with someone that you know that may also benefit, that would
- 21:29really help me to access new people that don't already know
- 21:34about this show. Thank you very much for
- 21:37listening and I will see you again on the next episode.
