Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey guys, guys, here it is Monday week of the NFL draft coming up reactions to what John Lynch said today in his press conference with the media, trying William Science, a potential 49ers trade,
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: how the dynamic between college football and the NFL is changing.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's something we talk about at the end.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't expect to talk about it today, but John Lynch said something interesting about it.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: So that's coming up as well.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: This podcast is brought to you draft week by my friends and yours at Puesto.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Me, he kind of moderno.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, they got the locations in Levi's stadium.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: You can't get in there right now.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: They have a location in Santa Clara where I'm going for lunch this week.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: They have a location in Concord plus Southern California, Orange County.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: This is as good as it gets, the Adler brothers have put together a beast when it comes to Puesto, the vibe always perfect, the food always delicious, the margaritas always hit the spot.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: No matter what you're up to, date night, business lunch, boys night, take the family,
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's just perfect.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how they nailed it, but they did.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: My personal favorite, the short rib case of Buria Taco, with that ooey gooey.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Crispy melted cheese, a little kick of helisco.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: They've got the shrimp, they've got the lobster, the filet, menion, on and on and on and on and on and on.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: Not to mention the postal perfect.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Margarita, among others, it is the spot.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: Signature, Mexico, city, style, crispy, melted cheese.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: They've been honored for a award after award.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: The tortillas made in-house daily.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: The best you can find.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you to the Adler Brothers, huge nine of fans.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you to you, when you go, you will thank me, but don't thank me.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't do anything.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: Thank them.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: A couple of things that did not get into the YouTube, which is the audio that's coming up, Jimmy Garoppolo, apparently.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: according to rap sheet, considering retirement.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: Also, is the Rams top backup option.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe a little bit of contract, deploy here from Jimmy G in his agent.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's made a lot of money.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's made a 156 million dollars in his career.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: Most of it in California, he's 34 years old and is quote, mulling a final decision.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: which, you know, I mean, being a backup is great at any moment in time, though, is your Matthew Stafford's backup, you need to be called on.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: So it is taxing, like mentally, potentially physically.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I get it, where Jimmy's coming from, like, give me an amount of money that gets me fired up to get out of bed today.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: Guys, say, I'll play for free.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, well, you've made 156.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you've made 156, like,
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's what the diet has got through with Trent Williams every year.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: I really want to do this guys, but you got to give me an amount of money that's going to make me excited to be here.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: And the more you make, the more money it takes.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: So...
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: something to watch for with Jimmy I think the other thing I'm wondering how does this week affect it right the rams think well if they can find a guy in the six round they like then maybe they don't need a page of me but if the draft comes and goes this weekend and they don't get another quarterback then maybe Jimmy is a much more real option for them a need for them now I think when you're
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's tough spot because they, the Niners are a great example.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: You can't just have some guy in case Africa's hurt.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: You might need to win a couple of games.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: You think you're a Super Bowl contender.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: But you're also, you know, paying a lot of money for your starting quarterback.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: So tough spot for them to be in.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing, it's Fred Warner.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: Good to see Fred Warner talk for the 49ers today.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: He says he's ready to roll, full-go, no restrictions.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody expected restrictions.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, given that as the year was going on, there was talk about if the niders make it that the Super Bowl, maybe he could play in it.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: They went to the conference championship game.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: There was some of that discussion, but that felt like a long shot, unlikely.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: As it turned out, we didn't get that opportunity.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: Things happen, right, guys are away, you never know.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just good to see that now that he returns on Monday with a lot of his teammates that nothing else happened other than continued rehabilitation.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch also said that he doesn't expect to bring to my youth deal this week.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I've been saying Hang Around, wait for a seventh round pick, that sort of thing.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: It might be more likely to get a 2027, 7th round pick.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: You might say, well, that's part of what John Lynch has to say this week, and that's true.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: But let's be real, real.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's not much leverage here for the 40 matters.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: And even if it's like, well, Washington really wants him, nothing want to get him in the building.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: But if there's nobody else that wants him, and he wants to be there, you know, given the playbook.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's probably already got it.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: What's the rush?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: We're not given anything up for this guy and if you're him you don't want them to trade you you want to be a free agent and figure it out yourself So that's that
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: One thing that you're not going to see because you can't, but people on YouTube saw a suggestion that maybe we changed the name of this podcast from Hey Guy, which I've never called it.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: We have an awesome cover, listener, reiza, made an awesome cover, reiza, I've only texted it, I don't think I've.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: But he made awesome cover art.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll call it hey guy really, and it doesn't really tell you anything.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: So it's been ongoing for several years.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: The old GFF joke that's kind of a joke, but isn't a joke, but is a joke guy football focus?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: That may be it.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: That may be it.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now don't take May as an opportunity to go by the website, I've already got it.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that's the direction I'm landing, but I'm over to your feedback.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: You start to wonder, is it too late to do the Alex Highsmith for Brandon I.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: You trade from 2024?
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: probably is too late.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch spoke today, Trump William site and extension.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: The draft is almost here.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: A little more insight today from John Lynch of what this draft might be looking like, mock draft analysis and more.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch just spoke the Monday press conference, Kyle Shannon had absent.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: I guess not enough drama, no trail ants, Mac Jones decision to head off.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: So, so no, Kyle Shannon Hannah parents.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch did say a few interesting things.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's a two-year contract on paper.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think everybody saw that one.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, two years.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: But the next year is really when you're gonna be paying for a guy who's retired and he said basically we talked.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this is a two-year situation that he's gonna play two more years, Trent Williams.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Now we'll see, football things change very fast and football, but if that's the case, then there really is no as much as, and Tim Kawakami asked him about it as much as you say, like, okay, what is the plan here?
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: What are you gonna do next?
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: You're not moving with any lacquerity, even though you say you are, unless something kind of falls in your lap.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I think one thing that was interesting from this week, kind of draft prep, Daniel Jeremiah said on Pat McAfee show, the positions that are getting heat are the tackle position, of course.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: And the receiver position, those are the ones you're hearing there could be a run that starts early, and those guys are going to fly off the board.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: And Albert Brear, one of the things he wrote was like, the niders could be looking to move back.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, as we know from the Ricky Pierce, I'll draft a couple of years ago, wanting to move back and finding somebody to move up are two different things.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like the second part is the hard part.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: So you might just end up sitting there and drafting.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: If you get to stay there and draft, you have probably go receiver or you go edge, the niders are not going to reach an offensive line.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: If they're drafting an offensive line at 27,
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: because I think it'd be a good player.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: Jerry McDonald asked John Lynch, do you where are you?
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: How many first round grades you got?
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: Well, last year you had like 20, and John Lynch said, well, I'm not gonna say the number, but it's less than that.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: So it goes to reason the odds of them getting a guy that they have a first run great on it 27 and listen to non-premium position are pretty low.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it could happen at receiver because there's a lot of them, but you know, could happen at safety.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: I just the athletics mock draft just had two safety's going before the 49ers.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: The two guys you'd want.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: going before the 49ers pick.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, to me, I understand where their heads at is like, why are we going to stretch for alignment here when two years ago we took Dominic Kuni.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's our starting garden for two years.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: Last year, seventh round, Connor Colby, he played a lot.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: And if Trent Williams is two years away, you know, like for example, just as an example,
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at guys who are kind of tackles, guards first, and maybe could develop into a tackle, but maybe not, one name that comes up is the big guy from Boston College, Jude Bowery.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: On the screen from Dane Brugler's Beast and the Athletic, you see he's a twitchy big man who needs to refine his technique and might be best at guard, all right?
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he is a big man.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Dane says, Barry's still raw in key areas of playing tackle against skilled pastructures.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's a twitchy big man with length and coarse strength worth developing.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: A move inside the guard might be best interest long term.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: So you might see that and think like, okay, then you draft him, you play him at guard and then you turn him into a tackle in two years.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: The problem with that is two or three years is such a long time.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: that plan has more ways way more ways to go wrong than ways to go right.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: Putty's a great example.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: You nailed the pick.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: He was a starter at guard, basically a day one starter at guard, and here we are going into his third year in the league.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: And he's kind of coming into a prove it year at the end of 2026.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to say,
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: pay Dominic Pune, extend Dominic Pune, or are we going to say, yeah, it's probably the second he becomes more expensive as the time to find somebody else.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's, you know, he's kind of got, now he played hurt a lot last time, he was banged up, made it challenging, but it's, you know, it's a, it's a prove it situation for him.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Matt Barrows just did the athletic mock draft where they have like different guys from different, you know, cover different beats draft for
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Barrow's drafted a key mezzodor from my Amity Eddresher.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: A powerfully built Eddresher, who had 12 and half sacks, 17 and half TFLs, I keep in mind these teams.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the old days where you play 12 games in college.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: made his biggest impact in their playoff games.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Barrel's rights, Omar Cooper Jr. they received from Indiana was so tempting at this spot.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: The rationale, however, is that there are more in tight, there will be more enticing receivers later.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: It mentions Jeremy Bernard, there's a fast guy Washington, honestly, had a way bigger impact than Alabama than I expected.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: Elijah Serrat, Indiana, more of the Denzel Boston
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: type, he's not a contested catch guy, he's not a big separator, tough guy, but there's any more of those guys in the second round, the edge rusher is so just get the edge rusher now.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: Now I kind of tongue in cheek to start the thing, talking about a high smith and the article that's on the screen is this like you remember the 2024, the first goal round or maybe that
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, will there be a player for player, Nick Herbig or Alex Heissmith, Charles Robinson of Yahoo wrote this, an executive told him that the, is one high-level personal object told me, the Steelers will trade either Alex Heissmith or Nick Herbig.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, now Herbig is the younger one.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: So what goes to reason that Heissmith would be the more likely to be trade
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: has two years for total scheduled base salary of $30 million remaining.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: Which, that's pretty good.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: 14 and a half, 15 and a half.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Joey both have made 12 last year.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that's good.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: With a strong year, he's not going to make 12 this year.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: With a strong year in 26, it's expected that he'll try and get back to the negotiating table for an extension that resets a salary.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: It gets another two years of guaranteed money.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: Of course,
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: This is not the preferred option.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I'd rather go younger here if you're the nighters, but I'm just saying, if you need to, if you don't like anything at 27, and you say, well, this feels like a little too rich of a trade, but it is an impact player, nine and a half stacks last year.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: fourth and run defense in PFF 17th, it was his pass grade.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's a guy you've investigated before.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: It was interesting that John Lynch said that Reimoris, the new defensive coordinator, but
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: OG friend of Kyle Shanahan has there's this like running joke going on when they talk when the coaches talk about players that you know I look at the draft he says if we get that guy I'm throwing a pool party now the way he said it wasn't one it wasn't like one particular player but just like when he likes the guy he's saying if we get that guy with a pool party.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: although after the drag jacks and back flip into a pool video, I don't we don't need pool parties for anybody.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's interesting just it's an example of a defensive coordinator with some way, right?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like part what's the value, one of the values of John Lynch for the 49ers?
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that he has final say over Kyle Shanahan because he doesn't.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: But it's that a guy who has final say, Kyle, has a jam that he respects, will listen to, right?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: Values, so even though technically it's Kyle's decision, final stamp, it matters that he respects the guy.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think the same can be said here a defensive coordinator, he was not going to take Steve Wilkes.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: final grade on somebody, Nick Sorenson, did not have nearly the equity, Rahim does.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: For Heemsets, Kyle Neula, that receiver, but let me make the case.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: Here's why this guy on defense at 27.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: This is why that guy is really going to help us.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to do some of this.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to do some of that.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: Trust me, man, trust me.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Give me this one.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, by the way, Robert Sala had that, too.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: So that's really valuable.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so if there's a guy or two that he really likes here and he's saying, I know how to use him.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know that is such a big deal the scouts can have their grade and it matters because those guys put in the work those guys Chris cost the country those guys talked to the strength coach and the the mom and the ex-girlfriend They talked to everybody They do so much like work.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: They do in person all season long evaluation going back a couple of years especially for so many four-year guys now The der opinion really matters
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so the guy who but but they can't force a coach to play a guy or you draft a guy 27 and the GM puts it on the coach and now the coach has to find a way like there are so many ways where a situation can be bad for developing and getting the most out of a player if there are breaks in the main.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: If people aren't, you know, in locks up about why we're getting this guy and how to use them.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't have to, everyone doesn't have to agree on everything, but once you get a player, like everyone's got to be all in on finding a way to use the guy.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: So having a coach defensive coordinator, who can, here's what the scouts are telling me, here's what my eyes are telling me, I may disagree with the head coach and maybe once it offence a player here, but let me make the case how I'm going to use them really valuable.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big deal.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know who he likes.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's interesting to know that he really does like it.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple guys that
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: Raheem Morris really likes.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think the NFL's gonna try and raise the rookie wage scale based on what John Lynch said today.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: That they view the college game now, not so much as a development, but competition, right?
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: A guy will stay for a fourth year in college because this NIO money is so big and the NIO money is so big.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking rosters that are gonna be like $60 million plus this year, a few at the top end.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Really expensive rosters, players making a lot of money, players making better than second round money, players making better than end of the first round money.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it used to be that a guy would say, okay, I'm going to come out after my third year.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be the end of the first round or beginning the second round and that's good.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be more money than I'm making a college if I'm making any money in college.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's not the case.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: The only argument the NFL has is, well, the sooner you come to the league, the sooner you get to your second contract.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: This is a big thing in college basketball NBA too.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: But the money can be so significant.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: that it's worth going back to school, even if that means delaying that contract another year.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like a few years ago, it was a big deal.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Vita Vega, the defensive lineman for the box, he was a top of the second round projected, decided to come back to school, trying to be a first rounder he was, you want whatever, 12th or 8th or 15th, whatever it was.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: Well, now, like a ton of guys do it.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it is not weird to see old players anymore, a guy that's four years.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like all these guys, four years.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you got some of the post-COVID, like fifth year guys.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then you get some fifth and sixth year guys, maybe from Junior College, you aren't in a rush to get through the NFL.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: But NFL players are, NFL teams are losing a year of youth.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, with guys going back to school.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I, he didn't say this, but because he's on the competition committee, he said this is something we're not to look at as the league and a dress it.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: They've got to find a way to incentivize that they're trying to do to incentivize players to come out of college early and maybe, you know, maybe you're not, I'm just thinking I'll out here.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you're not going to get the guy from Ohio State.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: But maybe you could get the guy who was at Marshall.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: and was gonna go to Ohio State.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: And now instead, like Dylan Thineman from Oregon, and he was at Purdue, well, he just egos the Oregon last year to get paid.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: And there were a couple, there was a story about it actually over the weekend, will Howard the Ohio State quarterback, former Ohio State quarterback talked about and I didn't read it, but there was an article and I saw the clip, buddy basis that I took and paid, paid cut to come in the NFL, which, you know, he's not a top five pit, but,
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: They're making so much money now.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: It used to be like in the in between early and I all, which wasn't that long ago, yeah, you're taking a pick up if you're a top five pick or a top 10 pick or a top 15 pick.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: But now these guys are getting picked, just a pick up if you're second rounder.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: They're just so much money and it's not just at the top end.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: So they're interesting.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: GFF, should we do that?
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: Should we change the name of the show to Guy Football Focus?
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thinking of doing it because I never call it a guy.
