- 2:32Speaker 3: Gosh, I should probably drop ding story.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Two thousand bucks.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah, me and Emma would love to enter if we could,
- 2:38Speaker 3: but we can't.
- 2:38Speaker 2: So it's the twenty seventh show.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It is.
- 2:43Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we've learned a lot.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we have.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Just thinking about how we started.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Change Studios Change Yeah, ARLT change filming rooms in our
- 2:54Speaker 3: own office, created our own studio. It's been kind of crazy.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I think our one year anniversary is this why or August?
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 3:01Speaker 1: I think yep, craziness.
- 3:04Speaker 2: That's awesome. All right, how about this I'll start it off.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So I'm an HR director at an inpatient psychiatric and
- 3:17Speaker 2: substance abuse treatment center. Okay, okay, normal Monday, running new
- 3:23Speaker 2: hiring orientation, new contractor coming in. He shows up drunk, right,
- 3:32Speaker 2: not a little not a little off drunk at an
- 3:38Speaker 2: addiction treatment facility.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I get a lot of stories like the yeah, or
- 3:44Speaker 1: like people show up to a job they're like, yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I don't like talking on the phone at center.
- 3:49Speaker 2: This shows up to a treatment center as a contractor.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It does some work. He shows up drunk. Wow, like
- 3:56Speaker 2: maybe that you know these treatments center people, they would
- 3:58Speaker 2: never notice a person, right, So we pull him aside
- 4:03Speaker 2: and give him a reasonable suspicion alcohol test.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah, also, as he should.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He blows high, high enough that she's genuinely concerned. So
- 4:13Speaker 2: we wait, that required thirty.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Even get there?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Sorry you drink?
- 4:17Speaker 1: How did he get there? Drink a lot?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Oh god? He drive there, no questions, he to ove,
- 4:25Speaker 2: his mother dropped him off.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Where he's like, I got drunk in the parking lot. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 3: pregaming work if you will, it.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Will totally be true. So we wait, that required thirty minutes,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and we retest him. He blows higher because thirty minute
- 4:42Speaker 2: window he had been drinking at his orientation while behind supervised,
- 4:48Speaker 2: while we were standing My gosh.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Well, also, it takes longer to get into your system,
- 4:54Speaker 3: so he could have maybe he did drink in the
- 4:56Speaker 3: parking lot, and then it was just.
- 4:58Speaker 2: She's saying that he was drinking at his orientation. Okay, well, jeez,
- 5:01Speaker 2: I guess he was. He had it in the cup
- 5:03Speaker 2: and was just trying to make it.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Like like a tumbler. Yeah, like you know, that's what
- 5:07Speaker 3: the closet alcohols, just some coffee.
- 5:12Speaker 2: We had him gone before lunch. The job posting never
- 5:16Speaker 2: said must be sober, but I really thought that was implied.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You would think you was thinking people would have the
- 5:25Speaker 3: common sense to not also just show up to work drunk.
- 5:28Speaker 2: In general, I wonder how many people in the HR
- 5:33Speaker 2: space have have had somebody show up drunk to an interview.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I bet it is a crazy I mean we've told.
- 5:42Speaker 1: A lot of stories like that.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I guarantee it has been a time when they
- 5:47Speaker 2: sat down, you're like the whiff of that weed. Yeah?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Are you high right now? Yeah?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Him?
- 5:56Speaker 3: Were you high on your first Oh that's a weird
- 5:58Speaker 3: question first, and to ask no, no, just checking okay.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So like the thing to do before we dive back
- 6:06Speaker 2: into the chaos on the bad hire. This episode is
- 6:09Speaker 2: brought to you by b checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like

- 6:42Speaker 2: to bchecks dot io. That's BC h ex dot io.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Well, before we move on to my tongs farre as
- 6:51Speaker 3: we should watch our video that we have from sent
- 6:53Speaker 3: in by Tom Oh Tom.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what you got, Marcus. Let it roll.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Let's say we have a negive Nelly's and we are saying,
- 7:05Speaker 5: let's try to fix them, let's turn them around, because
- 7:07Speaker 5: obviously we'd like to see it we hired them. There's
- 7:09Speaker 5: a little bit of confirmation bias. We want to believe
- 7:12Speaker 5: that this person's right because we hired them. So I
- 7:14Speaker 5: want to introduce you to a guy named Han. Hahn
- 7:16Speaker 5: is in your sales department. Han always hits his metrics,
- 7:20Speaker 5: He adds more clients, high profit margin, top sales person.
- 7:25Speaker 5: So far, I'm kind of like, sign me up for
- 7:28Speaker 5: more Hans. I'm in. I'm liking the idea of Han.
- 7:30Speaker 5: But then you also find out that Han spreads gossip,
- 7:34Speaker 5: Hans steals clients from your other salespeoples. Han has a
- 7:37Speaker 5: negative attitude. Han won't work with anyone else. So we've
- 7:40Speaker 5: isolated him to a virtual office and he doesn't come
- 7:44Speaker 5: to any meetings. What are we gonna do with that Han,
- 7:46Speaker 5: Because that's one type of a negive Nelly the super
- 7:49Speaker 5: high performer, but when it comes to contribution, they're very negative.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Their competency is really high, but their contribution.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Is super low.
- 7:58Speaker 5: But then you have the reverse. You have the person
- 8:00Speaker 5: who loves the company, can recite every core value, will
- 8:05Speaker 5: high five you on the way in at every company
- 8:09Speaker 5: off site retreat, they're the first one there. But they're
- 8:12Speaker 5: always laid on their work. They submit work that needs
- 8:14Speaker 5: to be redone by someone else. They're spelling errors in
- 8:17Speaker 5: the news letter. So their contribution is really high, but
- 8:20Speaker 5: their competency is really low. So we meet the second
- 8:23Speaker 5: type of negative valley. And then the third type is
- 8:26Speaker 5: contribution's low. Competency is low. The duds and dead beats, Yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 5: just like.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Goodbye, that's super spot on I spent.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I love the way he told that.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah he's really good. Yeah, he's a great storyteller.
- 8:43Speaker 3: To have him come actually live on the show, that's
- 8:46Speaker 3: really good. He had a lot of energy's right though,
- 8:49Speaker 3: Yeah he is. There's definitely those two types of people
- 8:51Speaker 3: in Oh.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I always say that that first type he talked about,
- 8:54Speaker 2: the high performer, you know, but culturally crushing people. I've
- 9:01Speaker 2: always say that's like the real test of your commitment
- 9:05Speaker 2: to culture.
- 9:07Speaker 4: And that even though he's high yeah performing, actually you know,
- 9:17Speaker 4: he's actually depressing performance you know, in his proximity, and
- 9:22Speaker 4: you know that you heard him say, we tried.
- 9:24Speaker 2: To move him to a virtual office'st away from people.
- 9:27Speaker 3: It's like you're in time out, but please keep selling,
- 9:29Speaker 3: like please.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's exactly But that's the kind of Yeah, it's the
- 9:34Speaker 2: kind of bad higher that that really tests, you know.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It is a real gut check when you're like, hey,
- 9:40Speaker 2: I got to let you go. I know you're my
- 9:41Speaker 2: top performer, yeah, but you're really bad for everybody else. Yeah,
- 9:45Speaker 2: you know, so I don't know. That is a a
- 9:51Speaker 2: real test. That was That was good. I love love that.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Thank you Tom.
- 9:57Speaker 3: All right, so my story today is a a candidate
- 10:00Speaker 3: that came in for a mid level role. They sit down,
- 10:03Speaker 3: shake hands, seem totally fine. Then his mother walks in
- 10:07Speaker 3: a your hiring manager, caught off guard, lets her stay.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Mom takes a seat in the corner. The interview goes on.
- 10:13Speaker 3: She's quite the whole time professional. Even the interview wraps up,
- 10:16Speaker 3: everyone's actually pretty impressed. Then the mom speaks. She looks
- 10:21Speaker 3: at the hiring team and says, I need you to
- 10:22Speaker 3: really hear this. She says, please hire my son so
- 10:25Speaker 3: he can help me pay for my new teeth. Not
- 10:30Speaker 3: he's worked really hard. Not I'm just here from Morle Support.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It's straight to the dental work. And the hiring manager
- 10:38Speaker 3: said it was the clearest sign she'd ever received that
- 10:40Speaker 3: a candidate might not be ready to manage his own
- 10:43Speaker 3: professional life. So he didn't get the job, and the
- 10:47Speaker 3: teeth situation remains unresolved.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Okay, keep a straight face. The whole time you were
- 10:54Speaker 1: telling me.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I just remember putting the story.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I was like, you better give me some new teeth.
- 11:00Speaker 3: So I'm going to make sure you go to your interview,
- 11:01Speaker 3: and I'm going to make sure you do a good
- 11:03Speaker 3: job because I need Oh my gosh, my dad would
- 11:06Speaker 3: find this one really funny. He's a dentist. I'm sure
- 11:08Speaker 3: that would give him a good lass. But we have
- 11:12Speaker 3: another story to react to by Tom. This is his
- 11:15Speaker 3: second story. Oh cool, and so let's go ahead and
- 11:19Speaker 3: queue that up as well.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Tom is a rock story.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like, he's giving us a whole show today.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Tom.
- 11:26Speaker 5: There was a general vibe of negativity in the organization,
- 11:29Speaker 5: and so they brought me in and they said, hey,
- 11:31Speaker 5: can you just sit in for the day on several
- 11:33Speaker 5: meetings and just take notes and then we'll reconnect afterwards.
- 11:36Speaker 5: So I did, and I sat there and I took
- 11:37Speaker 5: all the notes I listed, I took some quotes down,
- 11:39Speaker 5: and I saw really quickly what the issue was like,
- 11:43Speaker 5: almost within the first two meetings. So at the end
- 11:45Speaker 5: of the day, I'm sitting with the executive team and
- 11:47Speaker 5: they're like, so, what'd you see, Tom?
- 11:48Speaker 3: Like?
- 11:49Speaker 5: Would you hear? And I started reading some on the quotes.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Am I the only one who thinks around here, this
- 11:53Speaker 5: is ridiculous? Do we hire the wrong people? Why can
- 11:56Speaker 5: we not get this done on time? And everyone in
- 11:58Speaker 5: the room starts looking at one person because those quotes
- 12:02Speaker 5: were all from the exact same person. Now here's the thing.
- 12:05Speaker 5: In the world of dance floor theory. We give them
- 12:08Speaker 5: levels of engagement. So now that we're on the dance floor,
- 12:11Speaker 5: we give them levels from neutral, one, two, three, four.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And five.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Executives many times think they're automatically a five, they're a
- 12:18Speaker 5: level five leader because I have the seed Suite title.
- 12:21Speaker 5: But the reality is some of your worst negative nellies
- 12:24Speaker 5: are gonna be your executives. And why that matters is
- 12:28Speaker 5: because if an in turn walks into a room or
- 12:31Speaker 5: a meeting and is a negative Nelly, it will have
- 12:33Speaker 5: a little bit of an impact. But if you, as
- 12:35Speaker 5: the CEO, walk in and you're saying these quotes, you
- 12:39Speaker 5: better believe it's going to influence everyone else in that room.
- 12:42Speaker 5: And so that's why I say seed Suite people, you
- 12:44Speaker 5: may be complaining about your culture, but I say you
- 12:47Speaker 5: need to check in with yourself first, because you may
- 12:50Speaker 5: be the negtive Nelly on your team.
- 12:52Speaker 3: OK, and do we really want to react to this.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I'm just kidding.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I'm jokey because you're an executive. Oh my god, I
- 13:00Speaker 3: mean I do, like, I know, I'm just joking. I
- 13:03Speaker 3: do agree though. I feel like you do see some
- 13:06Speaker 3: people who like in these companies that are the executives
- 13:09Speaker 3: and they're like negative and then they're like, why is
- 13:11Speaker 3: our culture so crappy? And then it's like, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 3: it starts from the top, so not here at be
- 13:16Speaker 3: checks obviously, but.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I don't know. I've worked for a guy for a
- 13:20Speaker 2: long time, worked for a couple of years for a
- 13:22Speaker 2: long time. That ed. The only difference is they never asked,
- 13:26Speaker 2: why is our culture so negative?
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:29Speaker 2: They didn't even know they Yeah, they culture was not
- 13:32Speaker 2: even something that came through their mind. Yeah. So, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and sometimes I think it's you know, people just don't
- 13:41Speaker 2: have the skills. Yeah, you know, the idea that there's
- 13:44Speaker 2: some type of dictator gets in their head, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 2: at the executive level. And then and then you know,
- 13:50Speaker 2: they don't even care. The culture is not even something
- 13:53Speaker 2: they think about. You know, it's just get the job done,
- 13:57Speaker 2: obey the rules, you know kind of thing. That's the
- 13:59Speaker 2: culture her So yeah, yeah, but he I loved what
- 14:04Speaker 2: he said in there, and that was you know, in
- 14:07Speaker 2: turn that's negative has little influence on others. Yeah, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and the higher the person is in the organization. So
- 14:17Speaker 2: spot on Tom is awesome.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Yes, we love Tom.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Thank you Tom.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I want to hire Tom.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Yeah for real.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Okay, I'm just kidding.
- 14:26Speaker 3: He's probably the CEO of something. I need to look
- 14:28Speaker 3: at his profile after this.
- 14:30Speaker 1: But thank you Tom.
- 14:31Speaker 2: It was really good. Yeah. Now, what's up me?
- 14:36Speaker 1: My turn? Okay, okay, I just have one story, but
- 14:41Speaker 1: here we go. Okay, So I ran a small company
- 14:44Speaker 1: and I needed a bookkeeper. I found someone who seems solid,
- 14:48Speaker 1: good with numbers, easy to work with. I trusted him
- 14:50Speaker 1: pretty quickly. Honestly, every week payroll ran, everyone got their check,
- 14:55Speaker 1: and things just kept moving along like normal for a year.
- 14:59Speaker 1: It wasn't until someone flagged a small discrepancy during an
- 15:01Speaker 1: audit that anything came up. Turns out my bookkeeper had
- 15:05Speaker 1: been cutting himself two checks every single week, one legitimate
- 15:08Speaker 1: paycheck and one that was very much not legitimate for
- 15:11Speaker 1: twelve months. Nobody caught it because he was the bookkeeper. Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: he's the one who I would never know. Uh. He
- 15:19Speaker 1: he reconciled the accounts, he knew exactly where to hide
- 15:22Speaker 1: it and just had no and I just had no
- 15:24Speaker 1: reason to look. I brought it in a forensic accountant
- 15:27Speaker 1: who confirmed it. He had been paying himself double for
- 15:29Speaker 1: an entire year, and when we confronted him confronted him
- 15:33Speaker 1: about it, he seemed surprised, not that he'd been caught,
- 15:37Speaker 1: but that it had taken this long. That the cat
- 15:40Speaker 1: doesn't do it.
- 15:41Speaker 2: He's like you idiots, like he finally caught on.
- 15:46Speaker 3: A background check with employment away with this is dying
- 15:50Speaker 3: to get caught.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And then it says a background check with employment varication
- 15:55Speaker 1: might have revealed that his previous employer had let him
- 15:58Speaker 1: go under very similar circums. Oh lord, and spoiler alert,
- 16:01Speaker 1: they did.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Right yup, run those employment very vacations, guys. Let this
- 16:08Speaker 3: be your lesson.
- 16:10Speaker 2: That's hilarious. Yeah, not hilarious, hilarious. Yeah, I don't wish
- 16:14Speaker 2: anybody deal to get to get stolen from. Yeah. That
- 16:18Speaker 2: happens so often, and I have heard so many stories,
- 16:23Speaker 2: yeah about people hiring bookkeepers and really not doing a
- 16:30Speaker 2: super thorough job. You know, like maybe they do some
- 16:33Speaker 2: some background checks, but a lot of these things where
- 16:37Speaker 2: people get caught, you know, they don't get they don't
- 16:40Speaker 2: get turned over to the police, there's not a lot
- 16:42Speaker 2: of charges. They end up getting booted and fired.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And I still feel like you should have somebody who
- 16:47Speaker 3: regularly audits your bookkeeper just to like be safe. Oh yeah, sure, yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 3: because like giving somebody that i'mount of trust is a
- 16:55Speaker 3: little crazy in my opinion.
- 16:56Speaker 2: But that's just me.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Because the funny part about that story was the guy
- 17:00Speaker 1: was surprised. He wasn't surprised that he got caught. He
- 17:03Speaker 1: was surprised that him. He's like, let's see how long
- 17:07Speaker 1: I can get away with this for.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Another bad hire.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's all the bad will continue.
- 17:16Speaker 2: That it yep, all right, well that's it for us
- 17:19Speaker 2: today then, Yeah, thanks for listening to the Bad Hire
- 17:21Speaker 2: and listen. Please subscribe, rate, review, like, share, whatever you
- 17:27Speaker 2: do to whatever you do on whatever app you're on,
- 17:30Speaker 2: uh to to support us, and UH share our our
- 17:34Speaker 2: our clips or our show with anybody. I think we
- 17:39Speaker 2: release every Wednesday now we do, and so that's kind
