- 0:02Speaker 1: Okay, it is officially hum day.
- 0:06Speaker 2: It is a yacht rock Wednesday, and we are three
- 0:11Speaker 2: days to kick off of the 2026 college football season
- 0:15Speaker 2: for the Texas Longhorns.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 0:20Speaker 2: The Zone, and where you can always listen to us
- 0:22Speaker 2: for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig White.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us. We're with you each
- 0:27Speaker 2: and every weekday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- 0:29Speaker 2: And as we get over the hump here, hopefully we
- 0:32Speaker 2: can help you do that. And is this the point,
- 0:36Speaker 2: as I bring in the producer, Jay Kermit, is this
- 0:38Speaker 2: the point where we say, You know people who start
- 0:40Speaker 2: their work week on Wednesday.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Is that today?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 0:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 0:43Speaker 5: All right.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So I hope your work week gets off to a
- 0:45Speaker 2: good start. For those of you who are at the
- 0:47Speaker 2: end of your work week that have Thursday and Friday off,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and I know several people in that department, good on you.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Good for you. And I hope you enjoy the next
- 0:54Speaker 2: couple of days. And for the rest of us, right,
- 0:55Speaker 2: just trying to get over the hump. So hopefully we
- 0:58Speaker 2: can help you do that. As I mentioned, it's a
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yacht Rock Wednesday, so you'll hear some return cuts from
- 1:03Speaker 2: some Yacht Rock. We're going to hear some we've not
- 1:06Speaker 2: heard before on this program. One will absolutely shock you
- 1:10Speaker 2: that it's not been on this program.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Will it shock me that it's classified as Yacht Rock?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So that's why we haven't heard it yet.
- 1:19Speaker 2: It's 1000% Yacht Rock. But for some reason, it just
- 1:24Speaker 2: fell through the cracks.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Okay. So you'll hear it.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But anyway, among the things that we're going to do,
- 1:33Speaker 2: we're about to hear from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 1:36Speaker 2: We'll hear from him throughout the course of the program.
- 1:38Speaker 2: We'll hear from Longhorn players, again, more from Connor Robertson,
- 1:42Speaker 2: the Texas center. We'll hear from Justin Cryer, Juice, as
- 1:47Speaker 2: they call him, the Longhorn transfer linebacker from Florida State.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And we'll also hear from Raheem Biles, speaking of linebackers.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So we'll hear from him as well, a couple of
- 1:55Speaker 2: linebackers on that. We do have Inconceivable this hour as well.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Also coming up here in just a few minutes, we're
- 2:04Speaker 2: going to bring to you As I mentioned yesterday on
- 2:08Speaker 2: the program, I like to have the opposing team, the
- 2:12Speaker 2: Longhorns opponents, play-by-play voice.
- 2:16Speaker 1: On with us. And we'll have that.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It's a little bit of a complicated or convoluted answer,
- 2:24Speaker 2: but we'll introduce you to it, the concept that's coming up.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So we're going to do that coming up in a
- 2:31Speaker 2: few minutes. But I want to jump right in with
- 2:34Speaker 2: the Cowboys. this has become kind of a thing I've
- 2:38Speaker 2: noticed on social media since the roster cut down to 53.
- 2:44Speaker 2: The highest profile name on that list has been Joe Milton,
- 2:49Speaker 2: who many people thought was, had earned the backup quarterback spot.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Now he was released and Sam, how was the third
- 2:59Speaker 2: guy or the second guy now? And so folks have asked,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know, is he, Was it a money thing because there's, what, $ 2. 5
- 3:07Speaker 2: million guaranteed to Howell? Was it just the output? Because
- 3:12Speaker 2: Milton had the better numbers, for sure, throughout camp. And
- 3:17Speaker 2: I saw a debate yesterday between a blogger, a Cowboys blogger, and.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Brad Cham, the voice of the Cowboys.
- 3:26Speaker 2: He said, why does it have to be a situation,
- 3:30Speaker 2: as the guy put it, Brad said, what is it?
- 3:33Speaker 2: The coach preferred one quarterback over the other. And it
- 3:35Speaker 2: goes into more than just what they did in those
- 3:37Speaker 2: preseason games against backup defenses. It also had to do
- 3:42Speaker 2: with what they saw in practice, what they liked better.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So anyway, at.
- 3:48Speaker 2: The press conference yesterday, Brian Chondheimer was asked, is he
- 3:52Speaker 2: open to bringing Milton back now that he's cleared waivers?
- 3:55Speaker 2: Nobody picked him up. So would he be open to
- 3:57Speaker 2: bringing him back?
- 3:59Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Um, yeah, we told you guys, I told you guys yesterday,
- 4:02Speaker 6: you know, these things move fast and, um, it was
- 4:06Speaker 6: a very, very hard decision to make. Um, great conversation
- 4:11Speaker 6: with Joe explained to him, uh, our thought process behind it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Um, I think when we looked at the.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Whole body of work, you know, we just felt like, um,
- 4:22Speaker 6: Sam had done a little bit more and just in
- 4:23Speaker 6: terms of, you know, executing the offense, uh, in certain
- 4:27Speaker 6: areas and, uh, To have Joe Milton back would be incredible.
- 4:32Speaker 6: We'll see what happens with the claims and then see
- 4:35Speaker 6: what he wants to do. I think we've shown that
- 4:38Speaker 6: we know how to develop him. I think him being
- 4:41Speaker 6: in this system for another year would be amazing. But
- 4:46Speaker 6: I also know that he should have choices. And so
- 4:50Speaker 6: we'll see what happens. But in terms of wanting him back, absolutely.
- 4:54Speaker 7: As talented as he is, did you guys get calls
- 4:57Speaker 7: about possibly trying to trade him?
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not going to get into some of the specifics.
- 5:01Speaker 6: He's obviously a very talented person, Calvin, so you can imagine.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Those things don't always come through, but there was definitely
- 5:09Speaker 6: people interested in Joe, so we'll see.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And while we're still on the subject of Joe Milton,
- 5:14Speaker 2: what would be the upside of having him back with
- 5:19Speaker 2: this team in camp?
- 5:21Speaker 6: And I'm going to say the upside, I'm not going
- 5:24Speaker 6: to say you put him into a box of what
- 5:25Speaker 6: he could be, but the arm talent's real. I think
- 5:28Speaker 6: we've talked a lot in here, Clarence, about the touch
- 5:30Speaker 6: and how he's developed the touch. I do know that
- 5:33Speaker 6: he did a much better job with our system. I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 6: this is what guys that come from the– that spread
- 5:41Speaker 6: system have to deal with, you know, in terms of
- 5:43Speaker 6: the learning curve of coming in and, you know, having
- 5:48Speaker 6: to learn how to huddle and call a play in
- 5:50Speaker 6: the huddle and make different decisions. And it's not all
- 5:53Speaker 6: done from hand signals in the sidelines and things like that.
- 5:55Speaker 6: And some of them, it takes a little bit of time.
- 5:58Speaker 6: So again, I think Joe's going to be a terrific
- 6:02Speaker 6: player in this league. I'm not going to say in
- 6:04Speaker 6: what regard, but like I said, it was a very
- 6:06Speaker 6: tough decision. One we did not take lightly. And, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 6: if we can get him back, awesome. If not, I
- 6:14Speaker 6: wish him nothing but the best of luck. He's a
- 6:16Speaker 6: terrific young man. He worked really, really hard to get better. And,
- 6:19Speaker 6: you know, I think he has a very bright future.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So if Joe Milton is not with the team, if
- 6:26Speaker 2: they don't pick him up, obviously Sam Howell is the
- 6:30Speaker 2: backup now.
- 6:31Speaker 1: He's the number two.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And since those preseason numbers in the preseason games were,
- 6:38Speaker 2: favored Milton. What tipped the scales in Brian Schottenheimer's mind
- 6:43Speaker 2: for making Howell QB2?
- 6:45Speaker 1: No, we were debating it.
- 6:48Speaker 6: I mean, you guys were digging yesterday and I get that.
- 6:50Speaker 6: And we really were, you know, I left here and
- 6:52Speaker 6: we went and had to finalize some things pretty quickly.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But, you know, it was back and forth.
- 6:58Speaker 6: But, you know, you know, Sam is a guy that
- 7:01Speaker 6: just at the end of the day, he's got a
- 7:03Speaker 6: great feel for what we're trying to do. And some
- 7:05Speaker 6: of the, you know, The way he played against New
- 7:08Speaker 6: Orleans really was good, and he bounced back. But this
- 7:11Speaker 6: was a great battle between two great competitors. Like I said,
- 7:15Speaker 6: I'm giving compliments to both of them. They both wanted
- 7:18Speaker 6: the job. I know some teams are carrying four quarterbacks
- 7:22Speaker 6: right now. That's not going to.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Be the case.
- 7:26Speaker 6: But at the end of the day, we just felt like,
- 7:28Speaker 6: Making this decision now was in the best interest of
- 7:31Speaker 6: our football team, giving us clarity. And Sam has done
- 7:35Speaker 6: an awesome job of learning the system. Both Dak and
- 7:38Speaker 6: Joe were ahead of him when he got here because
- 7:39Speaker 6: they were here last year. But his... His understanding and
- 7:44Speaker 6: grasp of the playbook is really, really good, and he's
- 7:47Speaker 6: got great field vision. That's one of the best things
- 7:50Speaker 6: that jumps off the film is he understands where everybody
- 7:53Speaker 6: is and how it affects spacing and things like that,
- 7:56Speaker 6: and that's why he's able to play pretty quick through progressions.
- 7:59Speaker 2: So while we're still on the subject of backup quarterbacks,
- 8:04Speaker 2: he was asked, has his quarterback room philosophy changed now
- 8:08Speaker 2: since he kept Howell?
- 8:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I mean, I think you always want to have a guy, uh,
- 8:12Speaker 6: it's a young guy that you're developing. It takes time
- 8:14Speaker 6: to develop quarterbacks. I think, uh, you know, at the
- 8:17Speaker 6: end of the day, when you construct rosters and you
- 8:20Speaker 6: have the limitations that you have with the 53 man roster,
- 8:23Speaker 6: it's hard.
- 8:23Speaker 1: There are new rules kind of make.
- 8:24Speaker 6: It to where it's like, you know, what's the point?
- 8:27Speaker 6: You know, I get, you're going to protect guys and
- 8:29Speaker 6: there's maneuvers and trades and things like that. But, um,
- 8:32Speaker 6: the answer to your question is, you know, you'd always
- 8:34Speaker 6: like to have a young guy and Again, Sam's not old.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You know, if Joe comes back, he's not old. But,
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know, I think we've made it very.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Clear when you're pursuing championships and we want to win now,
- 8:45Speaker 6: we're trying to build the best team possible. And we
- 8:48Speaker 6: felt like carrying two quarterbacks was the best way for
- 8:50Speaker 6: us to strengthen our roster.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And one more about this quarterback thing.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Is it?
- 8:56Speaker 2: Does he always just want to carry two on the
- 8:59Speaker 2: active roster now remember they could resign Milton he could
- 9:02Speaker 2: be on the practice squad they could have another practice
- 9:04Speaker 2: squad quarterback they pick up you know they can do
- 9:06Speaker 2: what do pretty much what you want with the practice
- 9:08Speaker 2: squad but with regard to the active 53 man roster
- 9:13Speaker 2: does shotty always want to just carry two quarterbacks.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Yeah again I I can't remember the last time you
- 9:20Speaker 6: know I've been a part of carrying three I know
- 9:22Speaker 6: it does happen um but you know, it's a physical
- 9:27Speaker 6: game and, you know, when you're in this thing for
- 9:29Speaker 6: the long haul, like we are, it does come into consideration. And, um,
- 9:33Speaker 6: you know, it's just, it's, it's what you have to decide.
- 9:37Speaker 6: And so do you want an extra safety? Do you
- 9:40Speaker 6: want an extra pass rusher? Do you want an extra receiver?
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know?
- 9:43Speaker 6: And so, um, those are all hotly debated, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 6: conversations that we have with, you know, Jerry and Steven
- 9:50Speaker 6: and Will and myself. And, um, I feel great about
- 9:54Speaker 6: our roster, but certainly there were some tough decisions made.
- 9:58Speaker 2: We'll hear some more from Brian Schottenheimer. throughout the course
- 10:01Speaker 2: of the program this afternoon and as I mentioned we'll
- 10:03Speaker 2: hear from Longhorn players as well. We have some other
- 10:08Speaker 2: college football notes to get to we'll do that but
- 10:12Speaker 2: coming up like I said we'll, and I don't mean
- 10:16Speaker 2: for it to sound so secretive and cloak and dagger
- 10:19Speaker 2: and all this, but it's a pretty unique situation with
- 10:21Speaker 2: what Texas State is going to do with its play-by-play situation.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So I'll just leave it at that and we'll introduce
- 10:28Speaker 2: you to, you know, what the concept is coming up.
- 10:33Speaker 1: We'll do that.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And obviously within the framework and the context of that,
- 10:38Speaker 2: we'll get some perspective on what G.J. Kinney's team will
- 10:44Speaker 2: look like, the team that he will bring in to
- 10:47Speaker 2: DKR Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon for that 2.30 kickoff.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And again, our coverage will begin at 10.30 Saturday morning
- 10:56Speaker 2: with the 3rd and Longhorn podcast guys. They're pre-game. from
- 11:02Speaker 2: 1030 to 1130. Our Longhorn game day program comes your
- 11:05Speaker 2: way from the Winship area down there on Bevo Boulevard.
- 11:09Speaker 2: That'll be at 1130 with Mike Hardball-Harge, Mark Henry, and
- 11:14Speaker 2: our own Jake Herman as well. That'll be at 1130.
- 11:17Speaker 2: The network pregame at 130 and the kickoff is at
- 11:20Speaker 2: 230 as this thing finally, finally gets underway.
- 11:23Speaker 1: We're down to three days left.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I had a little bit of selective, not selective, accidental
- 11:30Speaker 2: amnesia about numbers. Our good friend on X, on Twitter, CB,
- 11:37Speaker 2: has been doing this countdown. He's been doing it for
- 11:38Speaker 2: several years where he puts down how many days left.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And there's usually a highlight of the, like say, 21
- 11:48Speaker 2: days to kick off. And he might have a highlight
- 11:50Speaker 2: of Ryan Niblett with a punt return or a touchdown
- 11:52Speaker 2: from last year with our call on it. And that's
- 11:54Speaker 2: always very nice of him to do it. So today
- 11:57Speaker 2: was three. And when I woke up this morning, I thought,
- 12:00Speaker 2: three days?
- 12:01Speaker 1: Three days. Who's he going to go with? Garrett Gilbert?
- 12:04Speaker 2: Excuse me, Quinn Ewers? Yeah, here with his hand raised.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Totally just, I just blanked for a moment. And sure enough,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I thought, well, if there's one Quinn Ewers highlight above all, it's,
- 12:16Speaker 2: you know, the fourth and 13 touchdown pass in the
- 12:20Speaker 2: Peach Bowl to Matthew Golden to keep the season alive
- 12:25Speaker 2: and enable the Longhorns to win the thing in double overtime.
- 12:27Speaker 2: So I momentarily blanked out. happens when I'm, you know,
- 12:33Speaker 2: clogged up with things, just trying to prepare for the
- 12:35Speaker 2: first game of the season.
- 12:37Speaker 1: But yes, it is Quinn Ewer's days until kickoff, three days.
- 12:41Speaker 2: All right, coming up, we'll talk about this opponent, Texas State,
- 12:44Speaker 2: when we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 12:46Speaker 2: Zone and where you always listen to us.
- 12:48Speaker 1: For free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 12:51Speaker 5: She says, what? I said, Texas. She says, what?
- 12:57Speaker 8: They got a big, long road.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I got a lot of things in Texas.
- 13:04Speaker 2: The late, great Chris Ray with his song, Texas. Which,
- 13:09Speaker 2: by the way, used to be the actual network identifier
- 13:14Speaker 2: for the stations down the line. They'd be playing this
- 13:17Speaker 2: and going, you're on line for Texas Longhorns football this afternoon.
- 13:21Speaker 8: And it would just.
- 13:22Speaker 2: on a continuous loot until they got to airtime on that.
- 13:25Speaker 2: It is a yacht rock Wednesday and it does belong
- 13:27Speaker 2: in that category.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Okay.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Toward the end of talking about Texas, of course, the
- 13:32Speaker 2: season opener is on Saturday, three days hence, as they'll
- 13:36Speaker 2: take on the Texas state Bobcats. The last time they
- 13:39Speaker 2: played was 1930 when it was Southwest Texas state teachers college.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Texas won that contest 36 to nothing. Now, As I mentioned,
- 13:50Speaker 2: I always endeavor and have been able to really establish
- 13:53Speaker 2: some relationships with play-by-play guys for teams that the Longhorns
- 13:59Speaker 2: have played through the years, and they become good friends.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And this is no different today. It is, however, a
- 14:06Speaker 2: rather unique set of circumstances. And rather me try to
- 14:09Speaker 2: explain it, I'll let the play-by-play voices of Texas State.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Spell it out for you.
- 14:16Speaker 2: First of all, Brant Freeman, who has worked for the
- 14:21Speaker 2: university and has for years and has done their, did
- 14:24Speaker 2: the radio play-by-play, then their ESPN Plus, and now back
- 14:28Speaker 2: on the radio side as well. It's great to see
- 14:31Speaker 2: you again, Brant, and I know you're excited about a
- 14:34Speaker 2: new football season.
- 14:35Speaker 9: I really am, Craig.
- 14:36Speaker 10: Yeah, this is, you know, an exciting time around Texas State,
- 14:39Speaker 10: certainly with the way the program has ascended over the
- 14:44Speaker 10: past several years, and now being members of the Pac-12 Conference,
- 14:47Speaker 10: and You know, very, very excited to be covering the
- 14:51Speaker 10: team here in.
- 14:52Speaker 9: The 26th season.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Okay. All right.
- 14:54Speaker 2: That tells part of the story. Now, I'm going to
- 14:57Speaker 2: let you guys tell the story. And I say guys
- 14:59Speaker 2: because you see if folks are watching there on YouTube,
- 15:03Speaker 2: they would see it. But for those of you listening,
- 15:06Speaker 2: the other member of this Texas State football broadcast pairing
- 15:10Speaker 2: is none other than our own Cameron Parker. And it's
- 15:16Speaker 2: a rather unique situation. So, Cam, would you care to
- 15:21Speaker 2: explain a little bit about this, how this thing is
- 15:23Speaker 2: going to work? And I'll get both of your thoughts
- 15:26Speaker 2: on this. Because this is not your everyday run-of-the-mill, this
- 15:31Speaker 2: guy does the play-by-play and this guy is the analyst
- 15:33Speaker 2: and this guy is the sideline reporter like most programs,
- 15:36Speaker 2: including Texas, have right now.
- 15:38Speaker 1: So it's a rather unique situation. 100%.
- 15:41Speaker 11: It's a situation that you might see, I think, in
- 15:44Speaker 11: Major League Baseball, in some college baseball teams where you
- 15:48Speaker 11: might have an announcer who will call play-by-play for usually
- 15:51Speaker 11: the first three innings or four, and then the analyst
- 15:55Speaker 11: will swap chairs, so to speak, and then they're on
- 15:57Speaker 11: for innings four, five, and six, and then back to
- 15:59Speaker 11: the play-by-play guy who did the first three innings to
- 16:02Speaker 11: close out the broadcasts.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Different broadcast teams have we'll handle it differently.
- 16:07Speaker 11: The idea came to me, or not came to me,
- 16:09Speaker 11: but the idea was proposed to me, I don't know, Brant,
- 16:11Speaker 11: probably about, maybe about two or three weeks ago. Like, hey,
- 16:15Speaker 11: what do you think about working with Brant, but you
- 16:18Speaker 11: both do play-by-play? And it's an idea that I, you know,
- 16:21Speaker 11: hadn't really heard for in football ever before. But, you know, Craig,
- 16:25Speaker 11: I picked your brain, and Brant, we talked about it,
- 16:28Speaker 11: and we came up with, I think, a plan that's
- 16:30Speaker 11: going to work very well throughout the season, where depending
- 16:33Speaker 11: on the game, We'll have one broadcaster do the first
- 16:36Speaker 11: and fourth quarter and the other one do the second
- 16:38Speaker 11: and third quarter. And I think it's a great way
- 16:41Speaker 11: for Texas State and for this new broadcast team to
- 16:44Speaker 11: kind of get acquainted with the Bobcat community. Obviously, Brant
- 16:48Speaker 11: has been in San Marcos for a long time. They
- 16:50Speaker 11: know him very well. But for me to come into
- 16:53Speaker 11: the situation as well, I think it's a great way. And,
- 16:55Speaker 11: of course, we start tonight. with the Coaches Show, our
- 16:58Speaker 11: first Coaches Show of the season at Chimney's down in
- 17:01Speaker 11: San Marcos. So any Bobcat fans or even Texas fans
- 17:05Speaker 11: who are nearby, come out. Six o'clock is the first show,
- 17:09Speaker 11: but I'm excited for it, Brent. I'm not sure how.
- 17:15Speaker 11: If you've even seen or heard of any crews like
- 17:17Speaker 11: this before, but I definitely think we might be the
- 17:20Speaker 11: first for college football.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and Brant, before you answer this, I want to
- 17:24Speaker 2: make sure folks understand this because Cameron's being kind of
- 17:26Speaker 2: modest about this.
- 17:28Speaker 1: The way that I.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Understood it was there was an opening for the play-by-play
- 17:33Speaker 2: broadcaster and an analyst, and they had all of these
- 17:36Speaker 2: candidates apply.
- 17:37Speaker 1: For both spots.
- 17:39Speaker 2: And in the end, whether it's the university and or
- 17:42Speaker 2: Learfield or a combination or however it worked out, the
- 17:45Speaker 2: decision was made that the two best broadcasters to come
- 17:50Speaker 2: out of all of these candidates were you two guys.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And so then they were like, let's just go with
- 17:56Speaker 2: our two best broadcasters and let them do it.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Is that kind of the way you understand it?
- 18:01Speaker 10: Yeah, I think that's probably a safe assumption, Craig. And,
- 18:07Speaker 10: you know, I joke that, you know, as you pointed out,
- 18:10Speaker 10: I was the radio broadcaster for the football team for
- 18:12Speaker 10: a number of years before going over to the TV side.
- 18:14Speaker 10: And Learfield must have been so impressed with my radio play-by-play,
- 18:18Speaker 10: they wanted me to do it half the time.
- 18:21Speaker 9: So, no, but I joke.
- 18:24Speaker 10: I do want to point out, you know, kind of
- 18:27Speaker 10: the circumstances behind all this. So when I moved over
- 18:30Speaker 10: to the television side, we then had a new radio
- 18:33Speaker 10: broadcast team, Clint Shields, play-by-play.
- 18:35Speaker 9: Jeff Gandy, analyst.
- 18:37Speaker 10: Jeff was a player in the Big 12 back then,
- 18:41Speaker 10: the Southwest Conference with Baylor. He was the Mike linebacker
- 18:44Speaker 10: that took over after Mike Singletary. So, well, Jeff is
- 18:50Speaker 10: now with Baylor. Your good friend, our good friend, John Morris,
- 18:53Speaker 10: reached out to him. They had an opening for radio
- 18:56Speaker 10: analyst and Jeff being a former player, it was a
- 18:59Speaker 10: good fit. So he went on to Waco and I
- 19:02Speaker 10: couldn't be happier for him. I was a part of
- 19:05Speaker 10: Jeff getting into the business, using him for some high
- 19:07Speaker 10: school games, and he just continued to get better and better.
- 19:10Speaker 10: So I'm very happy for Jeff. For Clint, there's a
- 19:13Speaker 10: lot of personal issues regarding family, leading to the reason
- 19:17Speaker 10: why he had to kind of step away. So definitely
- 19:20Speaker 10: a lot of thoughts right now with Clint for he
- 19:23Speaker 10: and his family, and that'll be the case throughout the season.
- 19:27Speaker 10: And for me on the TV side, it was really
- 19:31Speaker 10: enjoyable over the past seven, eight seasons doing television. Um,
- 19:35Speaker 10: but that was with, uh, Texas state's ESPN contract partnership
- 19:39Speaker 10: with the Sunbelt. And that partnership does not exist with
- 19:42Speaker 10: the PAC 12, the linear net national networks taking over
- 19:45Speaker 10: all the football. Um, and so I was no longer
- 19:47Speaker 10: going to be calling football on television. So it, made
- 19:50Speaker 10: me available once again to do radio. And, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 10: the fact that things, the way that they happen, couldn't
- 19:55Speaker 10: be happier than to be jumping back into the booth. And,
- 19:59Speaker 10: you know, I've had Cameron actually fill in for me
- 20:01Speaker 10: before at Texas State on the television side. I know
- 20:04Speaker 10: him through you, Craig. And so I'm looking forward to
- 20:08Speaker 10: working with Cameron. I think this is going to be,
- 20:09Speaker 10: it's a unique, you know, situation, but I think it's
- 20:11Speaker 10: going to be a lot of fun.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Well, and just to add on to what Brant was saying,
- 20:16Speaker 2: you know, Jeff Gandy goes to Baylor, of course, the
- 20:19Speaker 2: tragic passing of JJ Joe, John Morris color analyst, a
- 20:23Speaker 2: season ago.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So Gandy is over there with that.
- 20:26Speaker 2: And then, as you mentioned, Clint having to deal with
- 20:29Speaker 2: some family things. And so it opened up both spots
- 20:33Speaker 2: on this deal. And as to the rotation, because folks
- 20:35Speaker 2: would say, will it work like baseball? Cameron actually asked me,
- 20:39Speaker 2: He said, have you ever done a deal? And I said,
- 20:40Speaker 2: I actually have. One time, this would have been the
- 20:44Speaker 2: 1991 1A State Football Championship of Texas. High school games
- 20:50Speaker 2: at Pennington Field in Bedford. I got called in at
- 20:54Speaker 2: the last moment along with a guy that both of
- 20:56Speaker 2: you guys know, Chuck Kelly, to ask to provide a
- 20:59Speaker 2: broadcast back to Crockett, the radio station in Crockett, who
- 21:04Speaker 2: was doing Oakwood. Oakwood was playing Memphis. Well, they had
- 21:08Speaker 2: not broadcast Oakwood all season long. They'd done Crockett and
- 21:11Speaker 2: a couple other schools. Here's Oakwood in the state championship.
- 21:13Speaker 2: They had nobody available to go. It was right before Christmas.
- 21:17Speaker 2: And I had a guy from the Crockett radio station
- 21:19Speaker 2: contact me and said, would you or would somebody do it?
- 21:22Speaker 2: And I said, let me just check, whatever. And so
- 21:24Speaker 2: I checked. And so they said, you know, I didn't
- 21:28Speaker 2: have an analyst I could work with, but Chuck had
- 21:31Speaker 2: done it before. And we said, okay, well, we'll do it.
- 21:32Speaker 2: And we said, why don't we just split the play-by-play?
- 21:35Speaker 2: And then Chuck said, how are you doing? I said,
- 21:36Speaker 2: why don't I just do first and fourth and you
- 21:38Speaker 2: do second and third? It worked out great. We had
- 21:40Speaker 2: a sideline reporter. Everything went really, really well. That was
- 21:43Speaker 2: my only experience with that. So that's what I communicated
- 21:46Speaker 2: to Cameron about that. And I think a big part
- 21:49Speaker 2: of all this is less about who's actually calling the
- 21:53Speaker 2: play in the moment. Because a lot of folks used
- 21:55Speaker 2: to tell me that when Bill Schoening and I were
- 21:57Speaker 2: doing the games, he said, We didn't, who actually did
- 22:01Speaker 2: the play by plays? Well, Bill did the play by plays.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And when you guys had broadcast rapport. And so the
- 22:07Speaker 2: conversation worked well. And I think that's going to be
- 22:09Speaker 2: the same for both of you guys, because as you mentioned, Brent,
- 22:12Speaker 2: you've known Cameron a long time and, and, and.
- 22:15Speaker 1: You're both professionals. And I think this thing will work
- 22:17Speaker 1: out fine.
- 22:19Speaker 9: Yeah, I agree.
- 22:20Speaker 10: You know, um, I think that, uh, you know, the, the,
- 22:23Speaker 10: the two of us, um, uh, work well together. I mean,
- 22:27Speaker 10: we haven't been on the air yet, but, uh, you know, we,
- 22:29Speaker 10: Cameron and I've had a lot of conversations about this
- 22:32Speaker 10: and we're both going in, you know, um, uh, with, uh,
- 22:37Speaker 10: you know, um, open arms. Uh, I had a chance
- 22:40Speaker 10: to actually to invite Cameron to a, um, kickoff event
- 22:44Speaker 10: for Texas state and had a chance to introduce him
- 22:46Speaker 10: to the coaching staff, some of the, uh, administration, maybe
- 22:50Speaker 10: even some of the players, uh, Um, funny enough, uh,
- 22:53Speaker 10: one of our assistant coaches, uh, he and Cameron look
- 22:56Speaker 10: exactly alike.
- 22:57Speaker 9: So they kind of joked about having the same barber.
- 22:59Speaker 10: Um, so, uh, yeah, I can already tell that the
- 23:02Speaker 10: chemistry is going to be there. Um, you know, we've
- 23:05Speaker 10: been on the same page on a lot of things
- 23:07Speaker 10: and You're right. It's a unique set of circumstances. But
- 23:11Speaker 10: you know what? Like, why not break some barriers here?
- 23:13Speaker 10: And maybe this will become a thing.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Who knows? Yeah. Okay. All right.
- 23:17Speaker 2: So, Brant Freeman and Cameron Parker, the play-by-play voices and
- 23:21Speaker 2: analyst voices, because they're going to do both. And I've
- 23:24Speaker 2: had people say, well, how do you shift from one
- 23:26Speaker 2: to the other? Hey, you're looking at the same game. So, Cameron,
- 23:30Speaker 2: I know you're looking at the same game. And like
- 23:34Speaker 2: you said, one guy actually calls the play, but the
- 23:36Speaker 2: other guy is seeing what's going on.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And then he talks about it.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And, you know, the who, what, when, and where described
- 23:43Speaker 2: by the play-by-play guy. And then the analyst is the why.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And you tell how it happens. And you go back
- 23:48Speaker 2: and redo it all again. He just happened to change
- 23:51Speaker 2: out at the next quarter.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And honestly, you know, when I was thinking about the idea.
- 23:56Speaker 11: I thought about your broadcast booth, you and Roger Wallace,
- 23:59Speaker 11: where of course you are the play-by-play broadcaster and Roger
- 24:02Speaker 11: Wallace is the analyst, but he wasn't a former player.
- 24:05Speaker 1: At least I don't think so. Roger may have played
- 24:07Speaker 1: some peewee football.
- 24:08Speaker 8: No, he didn't. He didn't.
- 24:10Speaker 11: But he's done play-by-play, obviously. I think he's filled in
- 24:13Speaker 11: for you once on the football side, but of course
- 24:15Speaker 11: calls men's and women's basketball, baseball as well. So he's
- 24:18Speaker 11: not your Tony Romo type analyst, right? Where He's seen
- 24:23Speaker 11: the game, but he is providing an analyst role, even
- 24:27Speaker 11: though he is not a traditional analyst broadcaster. So, you know,
- 24:31Speaker 11: I thought about your guys' broadcast booth and thought, okay,
- 24:34Speaker 11: it's not all that different.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Different from what we're going.
- 24:37Speaker 2: To end up doing that's correct yeah that's correct that's
- 24:40Speaker 2: why I think the thing is going to work fine
- 24:42Speaker 2: uh so uh as we as we talk about this
- 24:44Speaker 2: matchup now we'll shift to the game here uh Brant
- 24:47Speaker 2: let me get you to give kind of an overview
- 24:49Speaker 2: of what you're seeing what you've seen in practice for
- 24:53Speaker 2: what G.J.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Kinney plans to have on the field on Saturday Well,
- 24:57Speaker 1: for those.
- 24:58Speaker 10: That have followed the program since G.J. Kennedy took over,
- 25:00Speaker 10: you know, it's been a lot about the offense.
- 25:03Speaker 8: G.J.
- 25:03Speaker 9: Has an offensive background, as we all know.
- 25:06Speaker 10: As you know, Craig, former Texas high school football quarterback, Gilmer, and,
- 25:13Speaker 10: you know, went on to play at the University of Tulsa,
- 25:15Speaker 10: did spend a little bit of time at the University
- 25:17Speaker 10: of Texas before going to Tulsa. And so he's carried
- 25:20Speaker 10: that along with him throughout his coaching career, just that
- 25:23Speaker 10: offensive type of mind and And then one great year
- 25:26Speaker 10: in Connor Word and then that's translated to Texas State.
- 25:30Speaker 10: So a lot of his pieces from a year ago
- 25:33Speaker 10: are back. The team, I think, in terms of points scored,
- 25:36Speaker 10: total offense, second most in program history. The only team
- 25:39Speaker 10: that put up more was his first team in 23.
- 25:43Speaker 10: And his quarterback a year ago, Brad Jackson, it was
- 25:47Speaker 10: the first time since Gigi became the head coach, he
- 25:49Speaker 10: was working with the quarterback who wasn't, who didn't have
- 25:53Speaker 10: prior experience. Everybody had previously was, you know, a ready-made product.
- 25:59Speaker 9: Brad Jackson had to kind of like come into his own.
- 26:02Speaker 10: He was a redshirt freshman with very little college playing experience,
- 26:05Speaker 10: got a cup of coffee as a true freshman, but
- 26:08Speaker 10: he exploded onto the scene. You've seen the numbers, top
- 26:11Speaker 10: 10 in the country a year ago in a number
- 26:13Speaker 10: of major categories, pass efficiency, completion percentage, I think yards
- 26:18Speaker 10: per completion, rushing touchdowns, fifth in the nation. So great
- 26:21Speaker 10: dual threat quarterback and very young, only a sophomore. His
- 26:25Speaker 10: two big pieces are back. I say big, they're, you know,
- 26:28Speaker 10: physically small. His receivers are not, you know, the 6'3
- 26:32Speaker 10: Randy Moss type or Terrell Owens or anything like that.
- 26:35Speaker 10: You know, more of the Wes Welker types, you know,
- 26:38Speaker 10: in both Sparks and Chris Dawn Jr. So a lot
- 26:42Speaker 10: of retention on offense, you know, at the major skill positions.
- 26:45Speaker 10: Offensive line going to be a question mark because they
- 26:47Speaker 10: lost a lot from a year ago. So we'll see
- 26:49Speaker 10: how that pans out running back as well lost a
- 26:52Speaker 10: tremendous leader in lincoln perry although he's now back on
- 26:55Speaker 10: the coaching staff um and defensively they have a new
- 26:58Speaker 10: defensive coordinator um they have some pieces back from a
- 27:01Speaker 10: year ago but also some new guys that are being
- 27:04Speaker 10: brought in so i think offensively they feel good defensively
- 27:07Speaker 10: they've got some questions to answer.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Cam how about your thoughts on the overview of what
- 27:12Speaker 2: you see as as uh brant talked about and and
- 27:15Speaker 2: uh you know the the question marks that there are,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you know, if this guy comes through, it'll be, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 2: it'll work out really well for them, those kinds of things.
- 27:23Speaker 11: Well, Kenny's been very vocal talking about, you know, three
- 27:27Speaker 11: consecutive winning season at Texas State, probably the three most
- 27:30Speaker 11: successful seasons for Texas State on the D1 level. But
- 27:34Speaker 11: he said earlier this season that, you know, when he
- 27:37Speaker 11: took the job by year four, if you look back
- 27:40Speaker 11: at those wins, you know, you'd be like, yeah, you know, we,
- 27:42Speaker 11: maybe we overachieved, but he talked about how, Now, looking
- 27:46Speaker 11: at the talent they had in the coaching staff, he
- 27:49Speaker 11: wants to do more.
- 27:50Speaker 1: He wants to win more.
- 27:51Speaker 11: And as they enter this Pac-12 inaugural season for Texas State,
- 27:56Speaker 11: they want to be able to take that next step
- 27:59Speaker 11: and contend for a conference championship. And it's going to
- 28:01Speaker 11: be a very tough conference. Of course, Boise State will
- 28:03Speaker 11: be a top 25 team and one of the favorites
- 28:06Speaker 11: to get that group of five bid to the college
- 28:09Speaker 11: football playoff.
- 28:10Speaker 8: But G.J.
- 28:11Speaker 11: Kinney and the staff, they're very confident. He had his
- 28:14Speaker 11: press conference yesterday. Talking about facing Texas and a lot
- 28:19Speaker 11: of local awesome reporters there asking about what it means
- 28:22Speaker 11: to play Texas and what do you think and what
- 28:24Speaker 11: would the moment be like for you?
- 28:25Speaker 1: And he said, hey, we're here to win this game.
- 28:29Speaker 11: We're not here to walk in the stadium and look
- 28:31Speaker 11: at the bright lights and kind of fawn at, oh,
- 28:34Speaker 11: the 105,000 people there.
- 28:35Speaker 1: They are there to win.
- 28:37Speaker 11: And Brent, correct me if I'm wrong here, but I
- 28:40Speaker 11: think this is a really good litmus test for Texas
- 28:43Speaker 11: State to see, okay, we're facing one of the top
- 28:45Speaker 11: teams in the country.
- 28:46Speaker 1: How do we stack up?
- 28:48Speaker 11: And using that this week's game, no matter the result,
- 28:52Speaker 11: where do we need to improve?
- 28:53Speaker 1: What are our strengths?
- 28:54Speaker 11: What are our weaknesses as they enter a critical Pac-12 season,
- 28:59Speaker 11: which the staff and the team, they want to be
- 29:01Speaker 11: winning and they want to be contending for a conference
- 29:03Speaker 11: championship at the end of the season.
- 29:06Speaker 9: Absolutely.
- 29:07Speaker 10: You know, if they're able to compete, you know, take
- 29:10Speaker 10: this game into the fourth quarter, you know, um, uh,
- 29:13Speaker 10: maybe even, you know, stun a lot of people to
- 29:15Speaker 10: win the game. Certainly that's going to have them feeling,
- 29:17Speaker 10: you know, very good going into Pac-12 play. As you
- 29:20Speaker 10: pointed out, Cameron, um, And this is going to be
- 29:23Speaker 10: a very good conference headline by Boise State. The conference
- 29:26Speaker 10: that they left, the Sun Belt, was really good too.
- 29:28Speaker 10: Let's not lose sight of that. James Madison was the
- 29:31Speaker 10: group of five rep in the playoff this past year. So, um, but, uh, yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 10: you know, how do they handle this, this big stage,
- 29:39Speaker 10: not only, you know, playing, you know, in front of
- 29:42Speaker 10: the largest crowd they ever will have played in front of,
- 29:44Speaker 10: you know, but also national TV against a team like
- 29:47Speaker 10: Texas ranked fourth, fifth in the country, depending on the
- 29:49Speaker 10: poll that you're looking at right now. Um, you know, there's, uh,
- 29:54Speaker 10: there's a lot that can take away from this game. Um,
- 29:57Speaker 10: And so they're really relishing the opportunity. As you said,
- 30:01Speaker 10: they're not going to take the field hoping to keep
- 30:03Speaker 10: it close. They're playing with that mentality that they want
- 30:06Speaker 10: to win. Certainly it's not the same caliber of opponent,
- 30:09Speaker 10: but you go back to G.J. 's very first game
- 30:11Speaker 10: at Texas State, Not many people believed in them, and
- 30:14Speaker 10: they went into Waco and beat Baylor pretty good.
- 30:16Speaker 9: So this is a big opportunity for them, no doubt.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I want to wrap up by getting both of you
- 30:21Speaker 2: guys' thoughts on this new world for Texas State, which,
- 30:26Speaker 2: like we said, has been G5-G5. Now it's actually G6
- 30:30Speaker 2: since we have the newly reconstituted PAC-12.
- 30:33Speaker 1: So now that becomes the 6G. And who knows?
- 30:36Speaker 2: Maybe they become, the PAC-12 becomes a power conference again.
- 30:40Speaker 2: And it goes back to power five on down the road.
- 30:42Speaker 2: The proof will be in the pudding long-term, I think.
- 30:46Speaker 2: But Cam, let me start with you about, you know,
- 30:49Speaker 2: how excited are you about the possibility, you know, and
- 30:53Speaker 2: going into places like Boise, like San Diego, like Corvallis, Oregon,
- 30:58Speaker 2: places like that new frontiers, certainly for the Bobcats, and
- 31:02Speaker 2: then we'll get.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Brant's thoughts on it as well.
- 31:04Speaker 11: Well, selfishly, personally, I'm excited because we have to go
- 31:07Speaker 11: to San Diego in October. Obviously, going to Boise, Idaho,
- 31:11Speaker 11: that's going to be a great environment. Corvallis to Oregon State.
- 31:15Speaker 11: There's going to be a lot of fun road trips
- 31:17Speaker 11: that we'll be able to embark on during Texas' state
- 31:21Speaker 11: time in the Pac-12. I think you've got to credit
- 31:24Speaker 11: the administration and the athletic department for positioning themselves in
- 31:28Speaker 11: the Pac-12 conference during this ever-changing landscape of college football.
- 31:32Speaker 11: Because who knows what it will look like in a
- 31:34Speaker 11: year or two? Will the SEC and Big Ten have
- 31:37Speaker 11: their own conference down the line? But credit Texas State
- 31:40Speaker 11: for putting themselves, I think, in a position to succeed.
- 31:43Speaker 11: And from being around the administration a week or so ago,
- 31:46Speaker 11: that kickoff bash, everyone talked to me about how much
- 31:50Speaker 11: the university has been able to adapt and improve and
- 31:55Speaker 11: how far they've come in just a short span, even
- 31:57Speaker 11: from 20 years ago, five years ago to where they
- 32:01Speaker 11: are now. It's a place where You can attend academically,
- 32:05Speaker 11: but also athletically play and you're competing for championships. I mean,
- 32:10Speaker 11: look at the women's soccer team who knocked off Texas
- 32:13Speaker 11: A & M a few weeks ago.
- 32:14Speaker 1: They're doing a great job. under Coach Holman.
- 32:17Speaker 11: So it's a university, Brant, that I don't think is
- 32:20Speaker 11: just here to be here, right? They are here to
- 32:23Speaker 11: achieve and win and contend for conference championships.
- 32:26Speaker 2: And Brant, since you toiled, worked so hard in the
- 32:30Speaker 2: Sun Belt, I mean, it's nothing against these schools, but
- 32:33Speaker 2: going to San Diego or even Boise, it's going to
- 32:36Speaker 2: be a little bit different than going to Lafayette or Mobile,
- 32:39Speaker 2: isn't it?
- 32:40Speaker 9: Yeah, no doubt, Craig.
- 32:42Speaker 10: And as you pointed out, I've been covering Texas State
- 32:44Speaker 10: for a few years now, and When I think back
- 32:46Speaker 10: to when I first started, you know, being in the
- 32:48Speaker 10: Southland Conference, you know, going to places like, you know, Thibodeau,
- 32:52Speaker 10: Louisiana and Hammond, Louisiana and, you know, Nacogdoches, Texas, you know,
- 32:58Speaker 10: and nothing against all those schools, the great college towns.
- 33:01Speaker 9: And, you know, they're always great places to visit.
- 33:04Speaker 10: But if you told me then that, hey, you know,
- 33:07Speaker 10: down the road, you're going to.
- 33:08Speaker 9: Be at the blue turf.
- 33:09Speaker 10: You're going to be going to Boise and you can
- 33:10Speaker 10: be going to Corvallis and San Diego and I wouldn't
- 33:14Speaker 10: have believed it. You know, it's a testament to the administration,
- 33:18Speaker 10: to the job that G.J. Kinney has done. Let's be honest,
- 33:21Speaker 10: if football hadn't improved over the last several years, the
- 33:24Speaker 10: Pac-12 invitation never comes, even with the success of the
- 33:27Speaker 10: other sports. Football had to get better, and it did,
- 33:33Speaker 10: you know, and as a result, you know, to take
- 33:35Speaker 10: advantage of the opportunity, and so, you know, to go
- 33:38Speaker 10: to places like this and to be a part of
- 33:40Speaker 10: something like this is remarkable, and I know we're talking
- 33:43Speaker 10: football here, but let's not forget basketball. And you're in
- 33:45Speaker 10: the likes of a conference with Gonzaga, San Diego State,
- 33:49Speaker 10: who played for the national championship only a few years ago.
- 33:51Speaker 10: So baseball, Morgan State, a traditional power that's won national titles.
- 33:58Speaker 10: But Texas State, when they were in the Sun Belt,
- 34:00Speaker 10: they were winning the Commissioner's Cup year in and year out.
- 34:03Speaker 10: I think they won three of the last four they
- 34:05Speaker 10: qualified for. And had they qualified last year, they would
- 34:07Speaker 10: have won it again. And they want to continue that
- 34:11Speaker 10: type of success in the Pac-12 across the board, not
- 34:14Speaker 10: just football, not just baseball, but every sport.
- 34:18Speaker 9: So this is a really exciting time for us.
- 34:20Speaker 2: They are the broadcasters, the play-by-play voices of the Texas
- 34:24Speaker 2: State Bobcats. Brant Freeman, Cameron Parker, they'll be calling the
- 34:29Speaker 2: action for Texas State for Learfield on Saturday afternoon against
- 34:33Speaker 2: the Longhorns. Fellas, I appreciate that. I look forward to
- 34:36Speaker 2: seeing you in the press box on Saturday, Brant.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yeah, me too, Craig.
- 34:40Speaker 10: I understand it's a bit of a different vantage point
- 34:42Speaker 10: this year, too, so looking forward to that.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Cameron has seen it, so he understands as well.
- 34:47Speaker 2: All right, we'll continue coming up here on 13.
- 34:50Speaker 8: Under the Zone.
- 34:52Speaker 11: He's a Texas legend, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, the
- 34:57Speaker 11: voice of the Texas Longhorns.
- 34:59Speaker 3: And your host of The Craig Way Show.
- 35:03Speaker 8: Here he is now, Craig Way.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Second hour of.
- 35:27Speaker 2: The program here on Sports Radio AM, 13 under the
- 35:29Speaker 2: zone on the Yacht Rock Wednesday. Glad to have you
- 35:31Speaker 2: with us. My name is Craig Wayne, alongside the producer,
- 35:34Speaker 2: Jay Carman. I didn't want you to think, if you
- 35:38Speaker 2: were listening to the first hour of the program, that
- 35:40Speaker 2: we had forgotten about Inconceivable. Normally, we bring it to
- 35:42Speaker 2: you in the first hour of the program. But because
- 35:46Speaker 2: of the time element that we were working with, meaning
- 35:51Speaker 2: Brant Freeman and Cameron Parker, who will be the two
- 35:55Speaker 2: play-by-play voices of Texas State. And if you joined us
- 35:59Speaker 2: late and you're wondering how that works, you can listen
- 36:00Speaker 2: on the podcast page. They're going to basically split the
- 36:02Speaker 2: play-by-play and analyst duties for Texas State on their broadcasts.
- 36:08Speaker 2: So we talked about that and we talked about the
- 36:10Speaker 2: type of team that G.J. Kinney will have on the
- 36:12Speaker 2: field against Texas on Saturday. You can catch that on
- 36:14Speaker 2: the podcast page after we're done at 1300thezone. com. But Because
- 36:21Speaker 2: we needed to have that conversation at that point and
- 36:25Speaker 2: the length of it, it was going to be easier
- 36:28Speaker 2: just to move inconceivable into the three o'clock hour, into
- 36:30Speaker 2: the same slot, the back half of the three o'clock hour.
- 36:33Speaker 2: So we will have that coming up a little bit
- 36:35Speaker 2: later on this half hour. But I want to jump
- 36:37Speaker 2: to Longhorns and hear from some more Longhorn players. How
- 36:40Speaker 2: about a couple of linebackers? Start with Justin Cryer, the
- 36:43Speaker 2: Florida State transfer. And Cryer was asked about the fact
- 36:48Speaker 2: that the guys, even though Even though Ty Anthony Smith
- 36:51Speaker 2: is no longer with the team, he was asked about
- 36:54Speaker 2: discussing the depth behind him and the rest of the
- 36:57Speaker 2: linebacking corps.
- 36:58Speaker 12: Yeah, I said it in one of my last interviews
- 37:00Speaker 12: that I had. They don't get to be the whole, like,
- 37:04Speaker 12: I'm just a freshman thing. We kind of need them
- 37:06Speaker 12: to kind of grow up a little bit. And that's
- 37:09Speaker 12: just the nature of the position right now. And if
- 37:11Speaker 12: I could guarantee them that me, him, and Brad can
- 37:13Speaker 12: go out there and play every single play on the
- 37:15Speaker 12: defense with no injuries... no problems, and I would, but
- 37:18Speaker 12: that's not the nature of the position, that's not how
- 37:20Speaker 12: football is, so we're going to need them, at what
- 37:23Speaker 12: point in the season, I don't know, it could be,
- 37:25Speaker 12: it could be, I was going to say tomorrow, it
- 37:27Speaker 12: could be this Saturday, it could be in Death Valley, like,
- 37:30Speaker 12: it's going to happen this year, and I feel like
- 37:32Speaker 12: Coach Nelson has done a good job of preparing those guys,
- 37:34Speaker 12: but we're going to need them this year at some point,
- 37:36Speaker 12: so they did a good job of accepting the challenge,
- 37:38Speaker 12: and kind of just being with us as we go
- 37:41Speaker 12: along this process, but We're definitely going to need all
- 37:43Speaker 12: three of them because it's a very physical, demanding position,
- 37:46Speaker 12: and it's a lot on a person. So we obviously
- 37:50Speaker 12: don't wish for injuries on anybody, but if it happens,
- 37:54Speaker 12: they're going to have to.
- 37:55Speaker 8: Show up for us.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Next, Cryer was asked about, and this is something that
- 37:59Speaker 2: we've heard quite a bit about, the intensity of the
- 38:03Speaker 2: work put in by the Longhorn defense, courtesy of of
- 38:07Speaker 2: the once and future defensive coordinator will must champ and
- 38:10Speaker 2: the intensity that that brings uh i mean.
- 38:14Speaker 12: You hear all the stories about him whenever you uh
- 38:16Speaker 12: when he first got here and obviously on your on
- 38:18Speaker 12: your recruiting visit he's everybody's in a polo he's all
- 38:19Speaker 12: nice and stuff uh that first meeting though he was
- 38:22Speaker 12: i was like oh this is this is how this
- 38:24Speaker 12: is this is the guy i've heard about and so
- 38:26Speaker 12: um he's he's an intense guy but also like he
- 38:28Speaker 12: gets he's demanding but he gets the most out of
- 38:29Speaker 12: you so uh He's someone who you love playing for.
- 38:32Speaker 8: He gives you a lot. He's your earful sometimes.
- 38:35Speaker 12: You probably don't want to hear it a lot of
- 38:37Speaker 12: the times, but at the same time, on Saturday when
- 38:39Speaker 12: it shows up, he knows he's got your back. That
- 38:42Speaker 12: communication that he has with me, especially when he's on
- 38:44Speaker 12: the mic, he speaks a lot of trust into me,
- 38:47Speaker 12: a lot of belief into me.
- 38:49Speaker 8: I'm super excited for what we've got going on.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Up next was the thought about the communication differences.
- 38:57Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is when.
- 38:58Speaker 2: You play an up-tempo offense, like the Longhorn defense is
- 39:02Speaker 2: going to encounter from Texas State on Saturday, you're looking
- 39:08Speaker 2: at high-speed, up-tempo offensive attack. And so, yes, it can
- 39:16Speaker 2: take a toll on you in terms of the stamina.
- 39:18Speaker 2: But the other thing that Cryer points out is You
- 39:20Speaker 2: gotta be on the same page when you're communicating with
- 39:24Speaker 2: one another so that you don't lose track of who's
- 39:26Speaker 2: supposed to be where.
- 39:28Speaker 12: A little bit, just for the fact that there's going
- 39:30Speaker 12: to be obviously less communication from that side because they're
- 39:32Speaker 12: going to be going faster. So it's more the onus
- 39:35Speaker 12: is on me to kind of get everybody lined up,
- 39:37Speaker 12: get everybody set. Also to get everybody nervous to calm
- 39:40Speaker 12: down a little bit. It's going to be the first
- 39:41Speaker 12: game of the season. Everyone's going to be kind of
- 39:43Speaker 12: hyped up with energy. So you don't want anybody to
- 39:45Speaker 12: be out there kind of like just running on straight adrenaline.
- 39:47Speaker 12: You want people to think a little bit, slow it down.
- 39:50Speaker 12: Can't let the game get bigger than what it is.
- 39:51Speaker 12: So when we go out there, we know what we're
- 39:54Speaker 12: going to get. We're going to get tempo. So get
- 39:55Speaker 12: the guys lined up, calm them down a little bit,
- 39:57Speaker 12: and let's go out there and play.
- 39:58Speaker 8: It's football at the end of the day.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Among the adjustments that the Longhorns have had is Colton Vosick.
- 40:05Speaker 2: And this was something that was brought up in Sark's
- 40:09Speaker 2: news conference on Monday where it was discussed– That Colton Vasek,
- 40:16Speaker 2: who had been used on the edge primarily, would still
- 40:19Speaker 2: be there, but he had been used a little bit
- 40:22Speaker 2: as well at the outside linebacker spot. So Justin Cry
- 40:26Speaker 2: was asked about Vasek kind of cross-training the both.
- 40:30Speaker 12: At least for us, the man had a few words.
- 40:32Speaker 12: He got the little country accent. I think it's funny,
- 40:34Speaker 12: but no one else seems to really think it's funny.
- 40:37Speaker 8: He works really hard.
- 40:37Speaker 12: It's not a huge transition, but at the same time,
- 40:41Speaker 12: he does a good job. We don't ask him to
- 40:43Speaker 12: do too much. When he does go in there, we
- 40:45Speaker 12: kind of have a pretty set of rules for him
- 40:48Speaker 12: so he doesn't have to go out there and think
- 40:49Speaker 12: too much. He's done a great job for everything we've
- 40:52Speaker 12: asked him to do. I love what Cryer said. He's
- 40:54Speaker 12: got a little bit of a country accent. We are
- 40:55Speaker 12: talking about a guy from Westlake.
- 40:58Speaker 1: That's what it was like. But he's got the country accent. Okay.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Now, in zeroing in on Texas State, what about the
- 41:06Speaker 2: difficulties that that Bobcat offense poses?
- 41:09Speaker 12: Yeah, this won't be the only time we'll see that
- 41:10Speaker 12: this year. So we have to be prepared for it now. But,
- 41:13Speaker 12: you know, they present a lot of challenges, especially wide splits, tempo.
- 41:17Speaker 12: Coach Kenny's done a good job the last couple of
- 41:18Speaker 12: years and just running as many plays as possible. So
- 41:22Speaker 12: we're going to have our hands full on defense. So getting,
- 41:25Speaker 12: first of all, get the front line set.
- 41:26Speaker 8: That's the biggest thing.
- 41:27Speaker 12: You don't want anybody without with their cleats to the
- 41:30Speaker 12: ground that's the first issue I want to make sure
- 41:32Speaker 12: that the front guys are taken care of Justice Terry
- 41:34Speaker 12: always likes to like turn around and look at me
- 41:36Speaker 12: whenever he doesn't have a call so I need him
- 41:37Speaker 12: to face forward and get set but get the front
- 41:41Speaker 12: guys ready make sure they're aligned and then just get
- 41:43Speaker 12: communication in you never want to start a play without
- 41:45Speaker 12: knowing exactly what you're doing so whether that's looking out
- 41:47Speaker 12: to my right and talking to Grayson or having communication
- 41:50Speaker 12: with him just making sure that everyone's on the same
- 41:51Speaker 12: page so when the ball snaps there's no question marks
- 41:54Speaker 12: on the field and we have to do that pretty
- 41:55Speaker 12: fast because obviously they go up tempo but The easiest
- 41:58Speaker 12: way to kill that is to, I feel like if
- 42:00Speaker 12: you stop the run early in the down and kind
- 42:02Speaker 12: of dictate when they have to pass the ball, you
- 42:04Speaker 12: have a better idea and better chance of knowing what
- 42:06Speaker 12: you can expect and kind of playing the offense from there.
- 42:10Speaker 2: So he's one of the Longhorn linebackers who have to
- 42:13Speaker 2: deal with that Texas State offense.
- 42:15Speaker 1: The other is Raheem Biles.
- 42:18Speaker 2: I know you've seen it, maybe you hadn't heard the news,
- 42:20Speaker 2: that it's actually pronounced Raheem, even though there's an S
- 42:24Speaker 2: in the name.
- 42:24Speaker 1: He explained that a couple of weeks ago.
- 42:26Speaker 2: But Raheem Biles, the Pitt transfer, and he was asked
- 42:29Speaker 2: to describe what is the collective personality of this Texas defense.
- 42:34Speaker 5: Fast and physical.
- 42:35Speaker 7: That's really the best way to describe it, to be honest. Like,
- 42:39Speaker 7: we all got to be physical. Like, you know, much
- 42:41Speaker 7: I'm saying, no thud, no play. So we got to
- 42:44Speaker 7: show physicality every day. And just with the fast part,
- 42:47Speaker 7: it's just like, I feel like he got the right
- 42:49Speaker 7: players and like the right scheme to fit around us,
- 42:53Speaker 7: to let us play fast.
- 42:55Speaker 5: And just, like, be able to just know the scheme
- 42:57Speaker 5: and make the game easier for us, for real, for real.
- 43:00Speaker 7: So I feel like, especially, like, during these last couple
- 43:03Speaker 7: weeks we had, like, in and off camp, going into, like,
- 43:05Speaker 7: the season prep, you could just see, like, everybody's just
- 43:08Speaker 7: playing faster. Like, everybody knows what's going on. So it's
- 43:11Speaker 7: really just been great playing under Muschamp.
- 43:14Speaker 5: With his enthusiasm, he's going to bring it every day.
- 43:17Speaker 5: We know that.
- 43:18Speaker 7: We know if we mess up, no matter who you is,
- 43:19Speaker 7: he's going to get on you. So it's just great
- 43:21Speaker 7: playing under him. And fast and physical, that's definitely, like,
- 43:24Speaker 7: probably my way to, That's probably.
- 43:26Speaker 5: Playing for Muschamp.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Biles was also asked which of his skills would show
- 43:33Speaker 2: up more and be more highlighted in this Will Muschamp-coordinated defense.
- 43:38Speaker 5: I don't really know. I feel like everything, for real,
- 43:41Speaker 5: for real. I ain't going to lie.
- 43:42Speaker 7: Because I want to say my off-the-ball linebacker skills more.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Because it's a.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Little bit different from where I played at and the
- 43:50Speaker 7: system I played in at Pittsburgh. But also, I'm covering
- 43:54Speaker 7: a lot, too, in this system, too, like a lot
- 43:56Speaker 7: of man-to-man.
- 43:57Speaker 5: And I'm rushing, too. So it's really, I don't really
- 44:01Speaker 5: think it's a specific thing.
- 44:02Speaker 7: I think it's more so showing off my skills, saying, like,
- 44:04Speaker 7: I can do everything on the field.
- 44:06Speaker 5: So I would probably say that.
- 44:08Speaker 2: There's always some bonding that has to go on with
- 44:12Speaker 2: a team. And a lot of the time, that happens
- 44:16Speaker 2: off of the field. And Biles was discussing there was
- 44:18Speaker 2: a bonding dinner, if you will, that the linebackers have
- 44:22Speaker 2: with the interior linemen.
- 44:24Speaker 7: Dinner was great. It was a great bonding experience. Ate
- 44:27Speaker 7: some great food. Shout out Bulls Steakhouse. They ain't really,
- 44:32Speaker 7: we all ate good, so I mean, it was a
- 44:35Speaker 7: little pricey, but it wasn't nothing like, you feel me?
- 44:37Speaker 7: It was just, the boys hanging more. It was more
- 44:39Speaker 7: for the vibes. We really weren't worried about the price
- 44:41Speaker 7: of it. It was more just for the good vibes,
- 44:44Speaker 7: get more connected, and just bond for real, for real.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I didn't hear the name of it. Did he say Bulls?
- 44:51Speaker 1: Something Steakhouse. I wish it.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Had been louder.
- 44:54Speaker 2: B-U-L-L apostrophe. Yes, it sounded like Bulls. But anyway, no matter.
- 45:01Speaker 2: So since that was kind of a bonding moment, how
- 45:05Speaker 2: important is it to have those kinds of bonds?
- 45:09Speaker 7: That's big, especially going into the season. Knowing we're going
- 45:11Speaker 7: to have a long season ahead of us. We got
- 45:13Speaker 7: to be able to just... know people's different personalities, how
- 45:17Speaker 7: somebody's feeling this day, how somebody.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Might be feeling that day.
- 45:20Speaker 7: I feel like everything matters, especially, like I said, we're
- 45:23Speaker 7: going to play a long season this year. So us
- 45:25Speaker 7: being able to be more connected, that's going to help
- 45:29Speaker 7: us in the long run for sure.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Okay, and that also means developing the younger players, not
- 45:34Speaker 2: just at his position, but the defense overall developing the
- 45:37Speaker 2: younger talent.
- 45:38Speaker 5: I feel like they already knew that.
- 45:41Speaker 7: When they came in, all three of them, They had
- 45:44Speaker 7: the expectation like they wanted to be on the field.
- 45:46Speaker 7: So I feel like it's really hasn't been too much
- 45:48Speaker 7: of a change. Like they still been preparing like they're
- 45:50Speaker 7: going to be day one starters like they have been
- 45:52Speaker 7: since they've been coming in. So it's really just been
- 45:54Speaker 7: telling them like more so like just clean up this
- 45:57Speaker 7: little stuff, clean up that little stuff. It ain't nothing
- 45:59Speaker 7: like I've been a significant change, though. Like it's just
- 46:02Speaker 7: been them being who they've been. That's them working hard,
- 46:05Speaker 7: been in the playbook, been in the study, been in
- 46:07Speaker 7: the film room, executing on the field.
- 46:10Speaker 5: And just playing fast.
- 46:11Speaker 7: I feel like they've been doing a great job since
- 46:13Speaker 7: they got in.
- 46:13Speaker 5: It's just leading on.
- 46:15Speaker 2: So there's some thoughts there from the two linebackers there,
- 46:19Speaker 2: Justin Cryer, Juice, as they like to call him, and
- 46:23Speaker 2: Raheem Biles. All right. Hey, I want to remind you,
- 46:26Speaker 2: we're going to give away a pair of tickets to
- 46:29Speaker 2: the game on this program tomorrow. So stay tuned for that.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Coming up, We'll shift back to the NFL. We've got
- 46:38Speaker 2: some other college football notes to get to, and we'll
- 46:40Speaker 2: hear more from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, when
- 46:43Speaker 2: we continue here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 46:45Speaker 2: Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 46:47Speaker 5: Such another round. She serves them whiskey and wine. They'll say,
- 46:53Speaker 5: they'll say, Brandon, you're a fine girl.
- 46:55Speaker 2: What a good wife.
- 46:56Speaker 5: You would be. Yeah, your eyes.
- 47:00Speaker 7: Could steal a sailor from.
- 47:04Speaker 2: The So here's a story for you on a Yacht
- 47:08Speaker 2: Rock Wednesday. This song, Brandy by Looking Glass, was actually,
- 47:15Speaker 2: I learned, was actually played, it's a little more up-tempo
- 47:19Speaker 2: than it was originally supposed to be. And one hit wonder,
- 47:24Speaker 2: Looking Glass, although I will tell you this, I don't
- 47:27Speaker 2: know if you ever saw this, Jay, during the pandemic,
- 47:31Speaker 2: We saw a lot of unusual things, obviously, in that
- 47:33Speaker 2: year of 2020. Were you a student of Texas yet?
- 47:36Speaker 1: Sure was.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Okay. And what was that like for you? in the
- 47:42Speaker 2: in in the pandemic i mean how difficult was it
- 47:45Speaker 2: for you to do and keep the music going because
- 47:47Speaker 2: i'm going to explain this song i.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Mean without going into too many details it was difficult
- 47:52Speaker 4: but it was better than it could have been i
- 47:54Speaker 4: already knew people by that point i was living off
- 47:57Speaker 4: campus i was able to still go out and broadcast
- 48:00Speaker 4: games i was able to sit in some classes with
- 48:02Speaker 4: masks on and things like that right so there were
- 48:05Speaker 4: hardships there were summer plans canceled there were broadcast that
- 48:09Speaker 4: had to be done remotely from my house in Maryland
- 48:11Speaker 4: rather than Flow Sports in Austin. But while challenging, it
- 48:17Speaker 4: certainly could have been worse. I would not have wanted
- 48:18Speaker 4: to be a freshman.
- 48:20Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 48:21Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this up is we saw
- 48:24Speaker 2: a lot of creative musical things happen during the pandemic.
- 48:26Speaker 2: One was this group 50 years later, because this is
- 48:28Speaker 2: 1971 the song came out.
- 48:29Speaker 5: So here it is.
- 48:30Speaker 1: 49 years later.
- 48:31Speaker 2: And They did an acapella version of this, kind of
- 48:42Speaker 2: like we saw a lot of people, people in boxes
- 48:44Speaker 2: because they couldn't be around one another. Social distancing and everything.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Looked like the Brady Bunch with the boxes. And they
- 48:51Speaker 2: did this song with the same lead vocalist. And they
- 48:56Speaker 2: did it acapella. It was really good. Here's the fascinating
- 49:01Speaker 2: thing about this. This is one of the poster child
- 49:06Speaker 2: yacht rock songs. even though it's early 70s. Brandy, it
- 49:10Speaker 2: just is. That's about as yacht rock as you can get.
- 49:14Speaker 2: That song has not been on this program. on a
- 49:20Speaker 2: Yacht Rock Wednesday in over a year. I know that
- 49:24Speaker 2: for a fact because I have the list of all
- 49:27Speaker 2: the Yacht Rock.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Tunes, and it wasn't on the list.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Now, we played it once when I guess it was
- 49:32Speaker 2: before I even made up the list.
- 49:33Speaker 4: I want to say, too, there is an off chance
- 49:35Speaker 4: that I played it filling in for you on the Wednesday.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Oh, there you go. There you go.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Because I couldn't remember doing it, but I thought if
- 49:42Speaker 2: I did... We did it before anyway. So, yeah, it
- 49:44Speaker 2: very well could have been you.
- 49:46Speaker 3: If I did, it was a while ago.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Or it might even have been Andrew Zimmel who preceded you,
- 49:51Speaker 2: you know, before. And Zimm is up in Milwaukee now
- 49:54Speaker 2: running things up there for the Iheart family.
- 49:56Speaker 1: So good for Andrew.
- 49:57Speaker 2: So anyway, yeah, that's about as yacht rock.
- 50:00Speaker 1: As you can get is Brandy.
- 50:03Speaker 2: And it had an air that I could remember on
- 50:07Speaker 2: a program we were, and I was just going through
- 50:09Speaker 2: my list. And it came on the radio, and I
- 50:12Speaker 2: was going through it on the list, and I was like, well,
- 50:14Speaker 2: surely we've done this, haven't we? And I rolled all
- 50:16Speaker 2: the way through the list of what I've been doing,
- 50:18Speaker 2: and it wasn't there. So I said, well, it's definitely
- 50:20Speaker 2: on tap for this Wednesday. The other thing that's on
- 50:23Speaker 2: tap is hearing more from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 50:27Speaker 2: We heard him last hour talking about his decision to
- 50:30Speaker 2: keep Sam Howell instead of Joe Milton, and there'll be
- 50:34Speaker 2: some more quarterback conversation. But he also had some questions
- 50:37Speaker 2: about his offensive line, like– they added one more to
- 50:42Speaker 2: the practice squad and shot. He was asked, what does
- 50:47Speaker 2: he envision for more being signed to the practice squad?
- 50:51Speaker 6: Yeah, again, a guy we really got a lot of
- 50:53Speaker 6: feel for the year Geit was coming out. He was
- 50:56Speaker 6: on the opposite side of Tyler and a guy that
- 50:59Speaker 6: we've seen play some good ball.
- 51:02Speaker 1: We love the athleticism. We like the size.
- 51:04Speaker 6: And the line looked pretty good out there today with
- 51:09Speaker 6: those guys all kind of lining up out there.
- 51:11Speaker 1: And they've got a lot to learn.
- 51:13Speaker 6: They're definitely having to play catch up.
- 51:16Speaker 1: That's part of it.
- 51:17Speaker 6: But I think you've seen us improve the athleticism of
- 51:21Speaker 6: the position for sure. And that's always a good thing
- 51:24Speaker 6: when you're talking about edge players that have to block
- 51:27Speaker 6: some of the best athletes, if not the best athletes
- 51:30Speaker 6: in the National Football League.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Continuing on the offensive line, Sean Iver was asked about
- 51:37Speaker 2: Tyler Guyton and what Guyton has been able to show
- 51:41Speaker 2: him and how he worked through some things. And was
- 51:45Speaker 2: there a moment when Guyton really just kind of figured
- 51:48Speaker 2: things out?
- 51:49Speaker 6: I mean, we sensed the OTAs, but like I talked
- 51:52Speaker 6: a little bit about yesterday, until you start playing real
- 51:54Speaker 6: football and put pads on and stuff, I would say
- 51:56Speaker 6: probably that second week of training camp is where we
- 52:00Speaker 6: were like, whoa, okay. It was just the way, the
- 52:04Speaker 6: confidence that he was taking in his sets and the
- 52:07Speaker 6: counters that he was countering. So when a defensive end
- 52:10Speaker 6: rushes upfield and tries to counter and go inside and
- 52:13Speaker 6: his ability to move his feet and.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Slam the door shut on that.
- 52:17Speaker 6: Um, you know, going up against different guys and watching them,
- 52:20Speaker 6: you know, go up against easy and then watch them
- 52:22Speaker 6: go up against RG and Malachi and guys like that.
- 52:24Speaker 6: It was, you saw a guy that was beginning to
- 52:26Speaker 6: understand the matchup element.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Okay.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Well, this guy's going to rush me this way.
- 52:30Speaker 6: This guy's, you know, cause they're very different. They rush
- 52:32Speaker 6: different ways. And so that's part of the matchup. It's
- 52:35Speaker 6: no different than a receiver learning how corner plays technique wise.
- 52:38Speaker 6: There's when you're a tackle, you have to understand who
- 52:40Speaker 6: you're going against and And what's their fastball?
- 52:44Speaker 1: What's their changeup? What's their curveball?
- 52:45Speaker 6: And I'd say probably second week or so of training camp,
- 52:49Speaker 6: we were kind of like, okay, this is what it's
- 52:52Speaker 6: supposed to look like.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Tyler Guyton also had to go through some injuries as well.
- 52:57Speaker 2: And Shotton Amber was asked what Guyton was able to
- 53:00Speaker 2: show the coaching staff playing through those injuries.
- 53:03Speaker 1: He knows. I mean, he's been.
- 53:06Speaker 6: As aware of it as anybody that his availability has
- 53:09Speaker 6: not been the best.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And He didn't blink with the elbow.
- 53:13Speaker 6: And I think that's all part of the maturation process
- 53:16Speaker 6: of a young player. And I think you're the one
- 53:18Speaker 6: that actually asked the question, you know, three years, whether
- 53:21Speaker 6: it was Parcells or whoever said, talk about maybe D-line. But, like,
- 53:23Speaker 6: I think that's really for most positions. You know, you
- 53:25Speaker 6: get into that third year and you're kind of like, okay,
- 53:27Speaker 6: you know, this is time for this guy to kind
- 53:30Speaker 6: of put it all together. And, you know, he's growing fast. And,
- 53:36Speaker 6: like I said, I say it every time you guys
- 53:37Speaker 6: ask me, but I won't say it again.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I'm just super proud of him.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Next, Schottenheimer was asked about backup guys in general and
- 53:48Speaker 2: his philosophy on that. And does he really kind of
- 53:51Speaker 2: lean in toward having those high floor backups?
- 53:55Speaker 6: It depends. Each one, each thing is different, Nick. You know,
- 53:58Speaker 6: I think, you know, you factor all those things in.
- 54:00Speaker 6: But like I said, you know, we're trying to build
- 54:02Speaker 6: the best football team to go and beat the New
- 54:04Speaker 6: York Giants. And then the football team the next week
- 54:07Speaker 6: might look a little bit different when you get ready
- 54:09Speaker 6: to play.
- 54:09Speaker 1: The Washington Commanders.
- 54:10Speaker 6: And then We go international, and the team might look
- 54:13Speaker 6: a little different then. But those are real conversations, so
- 54:18Speaker 6: I'm not avoiding the question. The answer is yes, but
- 54:22Speaker 6: it's case by case.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Going back to that offensive line, Schottenheimer has asked, what
- 54:28Speaker 2: is it that he likes now more about that offensive line?
- 54:33Speaker 2: How much better has it gotten, even after the final
- 54:36Speaker 2: roster cut down and what they've added to the practice squad?
- 54:39Speaker 1: I think we've gotten better at tackle.
- 54:42Speaker 6: I think I'm going to say with also the improvement
- 54:44Speaker 6: of Drew Shelton, I think we've got more athletic.
- 54:48Speaker 1: I've talked about that. I'm a big fan of Nate Thomas.
- 54:52Speaker 6: I really wish him nothing but the best in Houston,
- 54:54Speaker 6: and I still think that he's got a chance to
- 54:57Speaker 6: become a really good football player. I think the versatility
- 55:00Speaker 6: that we have inside with T.J. Bass and– You know,
- 55:06Speaker 6: Nick Leverett, you know, battling that out. And, you know,
- 55:09Speaker 6: we've got good flexibility with all the different things that
- 55:11Speaker 6: we're trying to do and move around. And basically, I
- 55:15Speaker 6: feel like we got the guys we wanted back on
- 55:17Speaker 6: practice squad. And those are guys that you guys know
- 55:20Speaker 6: you're going to be elevating those guys. You know, I
- 55:22Speaker 6: keep going back to the Jets game last year where
- 55:24Speaker 6: you got four brand new starters.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And so I like the depth. But I really the
- 55:30Speaker 1: first thing.
- 55:31Speaker 6: I would speak to Tommy is the athleticism at our
- 55:33Speaker 6: tackle spot.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Going back to that.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Backup quarterback thing, it makes me laugh because it always
- 55:41Speaker 2: makes me think about the line that was uttered by
- 55:47Speaker 2: Donovan Forbes. If that name sounds unfamiliar to you, Donovan
- 55:52Speaker 2: Forbes was the backup quarterback for Texas, was a backup
- 55:57Speaker 2: quarterback for Texas in the late 80s behind, I think,
- 56:00Speaker 2: first Brett Stafford and then Peter Gardere. And when either
- 56:05Speaker 2: of those guys struggled, there was this big human cry
- 56:08Speaker 2: for Forbes to get out there and play. And he
- 56:10Speaker 2: was asked about it one time and he said, let
- 56:12Speaker 2: me tell you something. The most popular guy on campus
- 56:15Speaker 2: is the backup quarterback. That's just how it is for Texas. Well,
- 56:19Speaker 2: that also kind of falls along the lines with a
- 56:22Speaker 2: lot of NFL teams. Now that's not the case, obviously
- 56:25Speaker 2: with the Cowboys, Dak Prescott is the guy, the unquestioned and, uh,
- 56:29Speaker 2: absolute unchallenged leader of the offensive quarterback however there are
- 56:35Speaker 2: lots of questions about the backup spot and why Sam
- 56:39Speaker 2: Howell was kept instead of Joe Milton and Schottenheimer was
- 56:44Speaker 2: asked how did Howell's NFL experience playing for Jake Herman's
- 56:50Speaker 2: Washington Commanders for example play into the decision for him
- 56:54Speaker 2: to stick with the club that.
- 56:56Speaker 6: Was discussed um wasn't the only decision i think again
- 56:59Speaker 6: i i told you guys like the discipline of this
- 57:02Speaker 6: process is don't get caught up in a big throw
- 57:06Speaker 6: here a big play there a turnover here a sack
- 57:09Speaker 6: there it's throughout the whole process and from the scope
- 57:13Speaker 6: of from the time we got back together in april
- 57:16Speaker 6: to yesterday at whatever time it was one o'clock um
- 57:21Speaker 6: this was very hotly debated and uh You know, Sam's
- 57:25Speaker 6: got over 20 starts in the league, and I think
- 57:28Speaker 6: that that played a part in it, but that was
- 57:30Speaker 6: not the only reason for the decision.
- 57:34Speaker 2: One more this hour from Brian Schottenheimer, and we'll hear
- 57:37Speaker 2: some more from Shottie coming up in the 4 o'clock
- 57:40Speaker 2: hour as well. And this is about the fact that
- 57:45Speaker 2: they've got this kind of three-day weekend coming up, the
- 57:48Speaker 2: Labor Day thing, because remember, the Cowboys season opener comes up,
- 57:53Speaker 2: not only a week from Sunday, it's a week from
- 57:55Speaker 2: Sunday night, Sunday night game against the New York football giants.
- 58:00Speaker 2: By the way, that's how they, I think they still
- 58:02Speaker 2: answer the phone that way. If you call, I know
- 58:04Speaker 2: they did for many, many years. You answer, you'd ring
- 58:07Speaker 2: it and they'd say football giants. That's because there used
- 58:10Speaker 2: to be a baseball team called the New York giants,
- 58:13Speaker 2: but they left in 1958. The giants, the New York
- 58:17Speaker 2: giants baseball club with Willie Mays and everybody else left
- 58:22Speaker 2: in New York, after the 1957 season, they went to
- 58:25Speaker 2: San Francisco, they relocated and they opened up in 1958
- 58:28Speaker 2: and they've been in San.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Francisco ever since.
- 58:31Speaker 2: However, for all those years, if you called the New
- 58:34Speaker 2: York Giants football team, certainly back in the fifties, they
- 58:38Speaker 2: would answer the phone, football Giants. And that lasted well,
- 58:40Speaker 2: at least into the nineties, because when I was working
- 58:45Speaker 2: up in Dallas and say, Jimmy Johnson at a news
- 58:49Speaker 2: conference or Barry Switzer at a news conference on Tuesday,
- 58:53Speaker 2: And then there would be a media lunch thing they
- 58:54Speaker 2: would do. And then Jerry Jones would hold court and
- 58:57Speaker 2: all this kind of stuff. And then they would get
- 58:58Speaker 2: the opposing team's head coach on a conference call, speakerphone
- 59:03Speaker 2: type thing. I remember that when Bill Parcells was coaching.
- 59:07Speaker 2: And I remember two things.
- 59:09Speaker 4: One.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Was when they would answer the phone, they would go
- 59:12Speaker 2: football giants. So they would say it was still football giants.
- 59:16Speaker 2: The other thing I remember was one time they were
- 59:18Speaker 2: calling to get Parcells on the phone. And the way
- 59:21Speaker 2: these things always worked was the opposing team's media relations
- 59:26Speaker 2: director or director communications, whatever, would answer the phone and say,
- 59:31Speaker 2: hold on, I'll have coach ready for you in just
- 59:33Speaker 2: a second. And then the coach would get on the phone.
- 59:37Speaker 2: This one particular time, they're getting ready to play the Giants.
- 59:40Speaker 2: The media relations director for the Giants picks up the
- 59:43Speaker 2: phone and goes, hold on, I got to get a Frankfurter.
- 59:45Speaker 2: We're saying that. Oh, a Frankfurter, okay. Yeah, that's very
- 59:50Speaker 2: much a New York kind of thing. So anyway, they
- 59:56Speaker 2: play the Giants a week from Sunday. But there's this
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: three-day weekend going in through Labor Day, through the holiday.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: And as such, Brian Schottenheimer was asked, what's his philosophy
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: on this upcoming three-day holiday weekend for his football team?
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: I mean, the league mandates this, and I think they're
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: about the wellness of the players, which I support. Um, no,
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: I think, you know, I'll address it with the guys,
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: you know, we have put ourselves in a position where
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: we should get away and relax a little bit, but
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: we need to still work. Like, you know, this is
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: not a time, you know, where you fly all over
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: the world and, you know, you go shopping in Paris
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: and things like that. Um, I think, you know, we'll,
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: you know, I'm sure our skill guys will get together
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: somewhere and throw, um, cause we are, we've built ourselves
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: up where we feel.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Great going into, uh, this part and I don't want
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: to lose that.
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: And I think this is a very mature professional locker
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: room and I don't think that they're, um, you know,
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: going to waste this weekend, but I do want them
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: to spend time with their family and, you know, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: sleep in a little bit and rest their bodies a
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: little bit and do things that, that make you happy.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I think that's important.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: So there's the, uh, thoughts, uh, from Ryan Schottenheimer, the
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Cowboys head coach. We'll hear some more from Shadi coming
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: up at next hour. Now, as I mentioned, Last hour,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: because we had the extended conversation talking about Texas State
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: with their, not one, but two, play-by-play guys, Brant Freeman
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: and our own Cameron Parker. And again, if you want
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: to hear how all that's going to break down, you
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: can listen to it on the podcast page on that.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: But they're going to basically split both the play-by-play and
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: analyst duties. When we did that, we had an extended
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: conversation with those guys. So we didn't have time to
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: bring you inconceivable last hour. but we do have time
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: this hour. So that's coming up next. Inconceivable. Albeit in
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: the three o'clock hour here, only got rock Wednesday on
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: sports radio, AM 13 under the zone.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: And where you always listen to us for free on
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the I heart radio app. Third and final.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Hour of the program here on sports radio, AM 13
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: under the zone, right away with you alongside the producer,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Jay Kerman, uh, I want to do a little bit
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: of housekeeping and tell folks, I mentioned this when we
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: were doing the inconceivable segment that the reason we did
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: it in the three o'clock hours, because the length of
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: what we're doing a two o'clock hour. And I said,
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: the reason we were doing some Florida related stories is
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: I said, we don't have a show in, in its
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: typical form on Friday. There is however, a show and
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: hope you can tune in and hope you can show up.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: It's a big, football kickoff program coming your way Friday
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: from Back Porch Social in Round Rock. And it'll start
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: off with Mike Hardball-Hards and the world's strongest man, Mark Henry.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: Eric Henry, Orange 247, will join. He'll be on with them.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Of course, Cameron Parker will be there. I'll be there
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: as well. And it'll go from 2 o'clock all the
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: way up to 7 o'clock. And hope to see you
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: out there on that. So just wanted to make sure
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: we mentioned that. Okay, a couple other housekeeping things. The
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: other day, was it Monday, Jake, when we were talking
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: about that great win for Sebastian Gorsny at the U.S.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Open.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: Yeah, and the dramatic fifth set tiebreaker, which goes to
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: 10 points.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was pretty impressive. The dream and the
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: run ended today for Gorsny because... that can happen when
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: you're running up against one of the best players in
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: the world. Uh, Danielle Medvedev, the seven seed who won today, uh,
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: in straight sets, uh, in the Louis Armstrong stadium up there,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Flushing Meadow. They won, uh, he won six, one, six, three, seven,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: five off of that. So Medvedev advances in the run-ins
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: for the Longhorn Sebastian Gorsny, but a great run for him, uh,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: in that as well. Um, A little bit of jurisprudence
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: for you. We all remember what happened to Tiger Woods
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: when he had that DUI. And that was back in
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: the end of March. And he's reached a plea deal today.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: It happened this morning. It was a plea deal. And
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: as a result of that, and this was in Florida,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: maybe I should have put it in the Florida stories, right?
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: But Tiger did reach a plea deal.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: And let me just say this.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: On the surface, if it was just you or I
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: getting this kind of plea deal, it wouldn't sound like
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: a great deal to you, Jake, or to me, if
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: we'd had the type of DUI incidents, plural, that Tiger
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: has had in some recent years. This plea deal, this
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: impaired driving case, was present for the change of plea hearing.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Judge Darren Steele.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Said that Tiger will have to serve two sentences Five-year
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: driver's license suspensions.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: They'll run concurrently. One is a reckless driving charge, one
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: on a careless driving citation. The judge said there are
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: no exceptions. If you were to drive for any reason
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: at all, you would go immediately back to jail.
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Tiger also was handed fines. He has 30 days to
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: appeal the ruling, but apparently they've agreed to it. He
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: arrived at the Martin County Courthouse this morning. seated in
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: the front passenger seat of a black SUV.
- 1:06:07Speaker 8: He didn't drive.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: He did not answer questions from the gather reporters as
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: he and girlfriend Vanessa Trump walked in and out of
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: the building at 7.30 our time this morning for that
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: change of plea hearing because he initially pleaded not guilty
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: to driving under the influence charges stemming from that rollover
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: crash back in March. At the time, he told authorities
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: he was looking down at his phone and did not
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: realize the truck in front of him had slowed down
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: before his crash. No one injured, but according to the
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: probable cause affidavit, Woods did have two hydroconone pills in
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: his pocket. The officers observed him to be lethargic, slow,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: sweating profusely, with eyes that were bloodshot glassy and Pupils
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: that were extremely dilated. That sounds like your broadcast crew
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: after we get done with the game on Saturday. Sweating profusely.
- 1:07:04Speaker 8: Anyway.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Not as badly as the fans.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: No, no. Absolutely.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: The judge, Judge Steele, granted Tiger's request to travel outside
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: the United States to receive treatment in a controlled environment.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: And in a statement back in March, Tiger said he
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: was stepping away to seek treatment and focus.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: On his health. In May.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: the judge granted prosecutors' request to subpoena Woods' prescription drug
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: records covering the period from the start of 2026 up
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: until this past March 27th, the day that his Land
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Rover rolled over on the Tulane Road near his home
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: in Jupiter Island in Florida. In July, the judge granted
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: a similar request that allowed prosecutors to obtain hospital records
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: connected to his medical treatment following the crash.
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: And.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: And by the way, in case you were wondering, Tiger's
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: won 15 majors. So he's three shy of Jack Nicklaus'
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: record of 18. He also has won 82 PGA Tour events.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: That's a record he shares with Sam Snead, a guy
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: who spent 683 weeks.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Record number is the world number one.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: And he's the only player to have held all four
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: major titles at the same time, known as the Tiger Slam.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: It wasn't all in the calendar year. I think it
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: started what? with an Open.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Championship and then a PGA and then a Masters in
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: the U.S.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Open, I think, when he got that.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: But in any event, the punishment is he goes five
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: years without a driver's license. Now, this is where I
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: point out that that would be a lot more difficult
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: for you or I.
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: If we had to go five years.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: Tiger can have a five-year suspension of driving a license.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: He can afford to have somebody drive it.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: Of course.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: if you'd done that in the first place, we wouldn't
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: be having this conversation, right? He wouldn't be compelled to
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: do that now. But, it could have been worse for
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: him because the way.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: It worked.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Is that it's two concurrent five-year license suspensions for the
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: reckless driving and the, what do they call it, careless driving.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Yeah, they didn't, they didn't, Make them stand alone.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: No, and they didn't go with the DUI portion of it.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: In other words, they reduced the charges, if you will,
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: to reckless driving and careless driving. But because of his
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: past record and his history and things like that, that's
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: why they, you know, why the judge said five-year suspended license.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: But He can live with that. Just have a driver, right?
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: It shouldn't be that difficult for him. I think he
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: should be able to do it.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: No kidding.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Put it this way.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: But what, did Scotty only just pass his earnings? We
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: talked about that with Cameron on Monday.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Right, right, exactly.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Speaking of earnings, and this was something I also wanted
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: to get into the inconceivable, but we didn't have time
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: for it. But this, again, goes to something that would
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: be much more difficult for you or I than for Tiger.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: And it certainly was for this man. Eating peanuts.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Oh, sorry, not that one.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: You're familiar with the old TV commercials about publishers clearing
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: house to giveaways where you can get rich and you get,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: you know, $ 5, 000 for life or.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: $ 10, 000 for life, that kind of thing.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: No, what is this? Oh, it was a deal for
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: years called Publishers Clearing House. You get this mail out
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: coming in the mail and you fill it out and
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: you send it in. Well, it opens you up to
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: getting all sorts of offers and junk mail and things
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: But they pay you $ 5, 000?
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. It's a drawing.
- 1:10:52Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: It's a drawing. Yeah, so that, okay.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: So it's just a.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: The old TV commercial said, Only Publishers Clearinghouse can make
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: you so rich so fast. John Wiley, a 61-year-old Oregon man,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: did win in the Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes. It's kind of
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: like a lottery. He won $ 5, 000 a week for life
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: back in 2012. It's quite a lot, $ 5, 000 a week. Ooh,
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: I hope he invested it. Well, here's what happened. According
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: to an NBC affiliate there in Oregon, he was receiving
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: an annual check for $ 260, 000. That's how it worked. It
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: helped him retire, and it helped him buy a house
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: on six acres in Bellingham, Washington. And then all of
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: a sudden, the check stopped coming last year because Publishers
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Clearinghouse declared bankruptcy without warning him or the others. So
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: while he told the television station the.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Turn of events.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Feels like a nightmare, especially as he hasn't worked in
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: over a decade. He lives with his four dogs and
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: two goats on his property in Bellingham.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: That's where the money's going.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: He said he's struggling to find a job now.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: It was the promise of income for life has turned
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: into a legal and financial fight. He's one of at
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: least 10 winners who are still owed prize money that
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: they likely will never receive.
- 1:12:18Speaker 8: Oh, man.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: Well, look, at least he's got a nice piece of property.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I know worst comes to worst, right? He'll be okay.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: There was a group called ARB Interactive on the New
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: York Stock Exchange.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: They were listed as ARCA, A-R-C-A.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: They paid $ 7. 1 million to acquire Publishers Clearinghouse, but they
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: announced that they would only honor prizes won after they
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: took over in July. So the past winners, still waiting
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: on payment, still have to seek payment from the bankruptcy estate.
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: So.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and this comes, rolls all the way back to
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: where I was going with this. Whenever I, and I
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: don't do this very often, but I do mention when
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: the jackpot gets gigantic. I'm talking about when they have
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: the lottery in Texas. We talk about when it gets
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: to that B, that $ 1 billion.
- 1:13:11Speaker 8: That kind of thing.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: And it comes up as, you know, what would, if
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: you won, would you take the lump sum payout or
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: would you take the payments? And you said, and it
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: made perfect sense because you're younger, and I used to
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: feel the same way back in the day, that it
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: probably would make sense just to take the payments over time.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: The payments out, I guess, every year for 20 years,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: I think it is, or 25 years. So you get
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: a certain amount. And by doing that, you get more money, actually,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: than if you take the lump sum. Because lump sum
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: winds up working out to about, I think I read,
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: about 46% of the amount.
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: But then if you have a place you want that
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: lump sum to grow and you're.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: Young, there's an argument for that too.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: There's some diversified different areas, right, for income. So here's
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: another argument for taking the lump sum, right?
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I've thought about this before.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: If I ever won the lottery, would the lottery still
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: be around 20 years from now? Even if I'm still
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: around 20 years from now, would the lottery still be
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: around 20 years from now? And maybe there might be
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: a reason to take the payment. In the case of
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Publisher's Clearinghouse, he didn't have a choice. The way the
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: sweepstakes work is he would get $ 5, 000 a year for
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: the rest of his life, which worked out to $ 260, 000
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: because 52 weeks times five.
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: And back when he won, that was probably a huge salary.
- 1:14:42Speaker 8: 2012.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: Okay, okay, not that long ago, but still.
- 1:14:45Speaker 10: 2012.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: So he'd been getting the payments for 14 years. Not anymore. Actually,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: 13 years because they stopped last year.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: So he only ended up with basically, yeah, I mean,
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: he only ended up with 12 years off of that,
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: not necessarily for life.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, I guess if we're doing the math.
- 1:15:02Speaker 10: 14 years?
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Well, like we said, I don't even think he got
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: 14 years out of it. I think it was going
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: to be 13 years off of it. So if you
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: did $ 260, 000 times 13.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: That's $ 3, 380, 000.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: That's a property in Washington with two goats.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Two goats and a bunch of dogs, right?
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: But he said the principle of the deal was, the
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: deal was he's supposed to get five grand for life.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: So we'll see how that goes from there. Okay, coming up,
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: more Longhorn sound. We'll hear from Longhorn players when we
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: Here on.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: The Yacht Rock Wednesday. Jimmy Messina, they were the new
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: and different way, which a lot of folks will look
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: at this Longhorn football team, how they attack things, especially defensively,
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: in a new and different way with Will Messchamp as
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: the defensive coordinator. Justin Cryer is one of those newer Longhorns,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: the Florida State transfer. And he was asked about, you know,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: what does he think he'll feel, his excitement level after
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: playing in Tallahassee. Now as a Texas Longhorn player, that
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: excitement level he expects to have when he runs out
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: on the field with his teammates at DKR on Saturday.
- 1:16:18Speaker 12: Being in the crowd, it's a little different. I used
- 1:16:20Speaker 12: to come to games as a kid, so being on
- 1:16:23Speaker 12: the field this time and being in that smoke and
- 1:16:25Speaker 12: knowing that you've got 100,000 people outside and you've got
- 1:16:28Speaker 12: the cannon to your right, you've got people to your left,
- 1:16:31Speaker 12: it's a different feeling. Last week we did the mock
- 1:16:33Speaker 12: game and nobody was in the stadium. It was just
- 1:16:35Speaker 12: us running out, but I felt it. I felt like
- 1:16:37Speaker 12: I was really there. And I was just so excited. Like,
- 1:16:39Speaker 12: I had a huge smile on my face, like, the
- 1:16:41Speaker 12: entire day, really, because I was like, man, like, I
- 1:16:43Speaker 12: just can't believe I'm here. And I just really felt, like,
- 1:16:45Speaker 12: just blessed with the opportunity to go out there and
- 1:16:47Speaker 12: just go out there. Like, that first tunnel run out
- 1:16:49Speaker 12: with no one there, like, I felt like we had
- 1:16:51Speaker 12: everyone there.
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: And it was a different feeling. So I'm super excited.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Cryer was also asked about his skill set and the
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: mere fact that might he believe his skill set might
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: be accelerated and advanced and showcased a little more in
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Will Muschamp's style of defense.
- 1:17:11Speaker 12: I feel like we get to play in space a
- 1:17:13Speaker 12: lot more. I feel like he does a lot of
- 1:17:16Speaker 12: Vegas kind of stuff.
- 1:17:17Speaker 8: Roam a little bit.
- 1:17:18Speaker 12: We're not really stuck in one spot. So we're talking
- 1:17:20Speaker 12: about we get to do certain stuff that if we
- 1:17:22Speaker 12: see certain formations or whenever we're supposed to get a
- 1:17:25Speaker 12: certain spot, like we kind of play around with it
- 1:17:27Speaker 12: and just have a little personality on the field. So
- 1:17:29Speaker 12: there's being a robot standing in one spot. So being
- 1:17:32Speaker 12: able to play in space more. One thing I like
- 1:17:34Speaker 12: is that we get to kind of. show more pressure
- 1:17:37Speaker 12: than I did in the past and get to be
- 1:17:38Speaker 12: able to rush the passer a little bit more. So
- 1:17:39Speaker 12: I'm excited about that. And again, like we do a
- 1:17:41Speaker 12: lot of different stuff covering wise, disguising. So I feel
- 1:17:44Speaker 12: like we're going to do a good job of kind
- 1:17:45Speaker 12: of bouncing off each other and just showing off different
- 1:17:48Speaker 12: things we can do.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: So in getting ready for this and the question has
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: persisted throughout the summer, the reporters have asked players who
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: were returning players, what was the biggest difference that they
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: saw in Pete Kwiatkowski's defense and Will Muschamp's defense? Now,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: That doesn't apply with Justin Cryer because he didn't play
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: for PK. But where he was coming from at Florida
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: State and now playing at Texas with Will Muschamp as
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: the defensive coordinator, there are some things. Should fans, for example,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: expect to see more blitzing?
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: Yeah, we're going to get after it. We're going to
- 1:18:25Speaker 8: get after it. We're going to do a lot of
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: different things on defense.
- 1:18:28Speaker 12: But again, Coach Muschamp is someone who likes to be
- 1:18:31Speaker 12: aggressive on defense and We're going to show that. We're
- 1:18:34Speaker 12: going to go out there and do a lot of
- 1:18:35Speaker 12: different stuff. He does a good job of letting his
- 1:18:38Speaker 12: athletes play, though. So he's not very too particular on
- 1:18:42Speaker 12: what we do. It's more so how we do it.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: And then Cryer was asked about one was one of
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: the popular questions of the week revolved around Hiro Kanu.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: And again, in case you didn't hear that yesterday, he
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: does prefer to have his last name pronounced Kanu, not canoe.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: He didn't speak up about it, by the way, until
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: in the preparations for this season. Everybody called him Hiro
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Kanu last year. Television, we did the Media relations, everybody
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: called him Hirokadu. In fact, Sark even says it sometimes.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: It kind of slips in a little bit because you
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: get used to saying the same. But he did pass
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: along his desire that everybody pronounce it Kanu. And I
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: asked him personally on Monday, I said, you make a
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: big play, whatever. How do you want me to say
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: your last name? And he said, Kanu. I said, good,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: duly noted. So he also had attracted attention because he's
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: a very effervescent guy. He's very warm and friendly to
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: be the massive size guy that he is. And we'll
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: talk with just about anybody. As Sark said, he'll sit
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: down and have lunch with just about any of the
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: athletic teams over at the tank on campus. Friendly amongst
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: his teammates, just a warm personality, even as being as
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: tough as he is along the defensive front. And so
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: Justin Cryer was asked about his impressions of, of Hirokazu's
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: personality and the leadership element that he displays.
- 1:20:11Speaker 8: He has a certain gravity towards him.
- 1:20:13Speaker 12: I remember when I first got here with Ashley in
- 1:20:14Speaker 12: the Tank, when I first got here, I was trying
- 1:20:18Speaker 12: to find my way around certain stuff. He just came
- 1:20:20Speaker 12: and grabbed me, put his arm around me. I didn't
- 1:20:22Speaker 12: really know him like that, so I was kind of like, hey, man,
- 1:20:23Speaker 12: get off me. But he was like, man, you come
- 1:20:27Speaker 12: sit with me, man. So I was thinking we were
- 1:20:29Speaker 12: going to sit with some guys on the team. And
- 1:20:30Speaker 12: we sat with people from track, some people from golf.
- 1:20:32Speaker 12: We sat with just a bunch of different people. And
- 1:20:34Speaker 12: his confidence to just go out there and talk to people.
- 1:20:36Speaker 8: And I was like, do you know him? He was like, no,
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: I don't know him, but we're going to sit with
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: him today. That's the type of guy he is.
- 1:20:40Speaker 12: He's someone like, man, he's someone who who really loves
- 1:20:43Speaker 12: where he's at, he loves where he's at, and he
- 1:20:46Speaker 12: loves just being around people, he's definitely like, a lot
- 1:20:48Speaker 12: of people say that they're a so-called people person, but
- 1:20:51Speaker 12: Hero is definitely one of those people who loves being
- 1:20:53Speaker 12: around other people, and just enjoying the presence of him
- 1:20:57Speaker 12: is something that I really got to enjoy over the
- 1:20:59Speaker 12: last couple months, so he has a different type of
- 1:21:02Speaker 12: gravity around him, some of you are just naturally drift
- 1:21:06Speaker 12: towards as the day goes on, and Even whenever you
- 1:21:09Speaker 12: go off the sideline, we mess up on something, he
- 1:21:10Speaker 12: comes to you, slaps you in the back of the
- 1:21:11Speaker 12: head like, man, you good, bro, with that little accent
- 1:21:13Speaker 12: he got. So, man, he's someone who I'm going to
- 1:21:16Speaker 12: enjoy playing with for the rest of the year, and
- 1:21:18Speaker 12: he's a great guy.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: And one of his linebacker teammates is Raheem Biles. Biles,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: like Cryer, is a newcomer. He's a guy who came in,
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: transferred in from Pitt, and when he first came in,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: he was asked quite a bit about the Ohio State
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: game coming up the week. Not necessarily for the same
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: reason that a lot of the players were asked about
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Ohio State and kind of overlooking Texas State and not
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: paying attention. It wasn't so much because of that. It's
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: because Raheem Biles is from Columbus, Ohio. And he wasn't
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: initially recruited, you might say aggressively, by Ohio State. He
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: wound up going to Pitt, really showed out well then,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: entered the portals, And Ohio State did actually show some
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: interest in him that he said, they had a chance
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: to give me the first time they didn't.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I wanted to go on and play somewhere else. And
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: so he winds up as a Texas Longhorn.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: That was when folks were visiting with him early on
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: in fall camp workouts, getting accustomed to him, getting used
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: to him.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: So he said.
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: That this defense, and in specific, the linebacking corps, also
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: went through its adjustment phase under pressure will Muschamp. And
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: that includes not only the production on the field, the
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: ferocity with which they are expected to attack opposing offenses,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: be it whether they're blitzing or dropping back in pass
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: coverage or just hard.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Hitting, whatever.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Not just that, but that Muschamp also wants his defense
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: to be led by the players, not necessarily by the
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: defensive coordinator.
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: He wants our defense to be player-led.
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: And I feel like I've just been, like, doing a
- 1:23:01Speaker 7: lot for.
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: Us on and off the field. Because, obviously, it's player-led.
- 1:23:05Speaker 8: On the field.
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: Like, we're the ones out there making the checks. Like,
- 1:23:07Speaker 7: he says it all the time. Like, I'm not going
- 1:23:08Speaker 7: to be the one playing on the field. Like, it's
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: going to be y'all playing. Y'all going to be having
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: to communicate in front of 105,000, wherever we at on
- 1:23:14Speaker 7: the road. Big environment, big atmosphere. So, it's really just been, like,
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: more of a player-led thing. And I feel like that's
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: had help, like, in the locker room. Because when we speak,
- 1:23:26Speaker 7: we'll still be talking about some stuff that just happened
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: in walkthrough as we're walking into the locker room, just
- 1:23:30Speaker 7: little stuff. I feel like that's going to go a
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: long way with us on the field and off the
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: field because off the field is helping us grow a
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: crazy connection so that when we get on the field,
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: you can just look at somebody and they're going to
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: know you got this, we got that.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: So I feel like it's going to help us a
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: lot in the long run for sure.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: You know, if there's one thing you learn about playing
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: for Will Muschamp, and I remember this the first time,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: when Will was the defensive coordinator, is that he's very,
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: very interested in the development of his players, loves his
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: players a lot. That does not, however, excuse them from
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: getting the wrath of the defensive coordinator if they don't
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: perform according to what's been discussed and practiced and practiced.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: And so Raheem Biles was asked if he recalled the
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: first time that Muschamp got on him.
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: It was probably a day in the spring. I had
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: messed up a couple of calls. And then he just went, like, crazy. Like,
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: I was like, dang.
- 1:24:36Speaker 8: Like, dang.
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: Like, I didn't really know too much. There's not too
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: much you can say to that. You just got to
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: look at him like a man. Like, just look him
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: in his.
- 1:24:44Speaker 7: Eyes and just know, like, you don't want this to
- 1:24:46Speaker 7: happen again. So I just made sure they happened again
- 1:24:49Speaker 7: for real, for real.
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: But that was.
- 1:24:51Speaker 7: Really my moment in the spring. It was probably, like, three,
- 1:24:54Speaker 7: four practices in. It was a day I missed.
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: I was tripping that day for sure. He got on
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: me for sure.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: Now, when Viles was sitting at the table, he came in.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: They do this on these media availabilities, and they take
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: the opportunity to put two players quite often at the
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: same uh place at the desk at the I started
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: to say the dais but it's not really a dais
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: they're just sitting at a table with a couple of
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: chairs and they kind of will start with one player
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: and roll a second player in there's a little bit
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: of overlap you might say and so it happened with
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Hiro Kanu and Connor Robertson and then it kind of
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: happened with Connor Robertson uh and uh Raheem Biles. And
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: then it happened with Raheem Biles and Justin Cryer. So, uh,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: the two linebackers were sitting there and answering the questions.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: And so, uh, it got into this whole, uh, stream
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: of consciousness, if you will, this, this conversation about alpha dogs. Now,
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: defensive teams quite often are viewed as being alphas, especially
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: the pass rushers, linebackers, even secondary guys can be looked
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: at as being alphas leaders. Um, And that's one thing
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: coaches are always preaching and wanting to get out of
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: their football team. They want it to be player-led like
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: we just talked about and heard Biles talking about with
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: description of Will Muschamp is that they're looking for the team.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: To be player-led.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Yes, the coaches have their input and their direction and
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: inspiration and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: But they want the players.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: If you have seen any of the documentaries about the
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: 2005 Longhorn team, like in the Trojan horse documentary about USC,
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: or in the recent one about Vince Young, the one
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: thing that comes away from that as much as anything else,
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: and it was also 2005, that documentary series about the Longhorns,
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: that Longhorn Network produced. If you take away nothing else
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: from those documentaries about What you do take away is
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: that that team was very much player-led. It even went
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: back to Vince Young in the summer of 2005, coming
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: off the Rose Bowl win over Michigan and getting ready
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: to go in the season. And USC had this winning
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: streak going. At the time, I think it was 22
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: in a row or 21 in a row, something like that.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: And Vince Young said to his team, if you guys
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: want to beat USC, meet me at Denius, the practice fields, tonight.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: After dinner. So it was like evening workouts and that's
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: player led.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: And it happened on the defensive side, guys like Michael
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: Huff and Brian Robison and guys like that on the
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: defensive side leading it. So that whole thing about player
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: led means you got to have the alpha dogs, those
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: alpha guys doing it. Well, Cryer is viewed in that prism.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: so too is Biles. And Raheem Biles was asked, are
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: there younger players who could wind up being those future
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: alpha leaders after Biles and Cryer's time is completed at Texas?
- 1:28:12Speaker 7: Definitely Tyler Atkinson, Kosey, Rocky, all three of them, they
- 1:28:17Speaker 7: all gonna talk when they need to.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: Richard, who else is some young guys? I think it's
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: some DBs.
- 1:28:28Speaker 7: I'm going to say Torre. He got that, like, it's
- 1:28:32Speaker 7: not too much of a dog, but he carries himself
- 1:28:34Speaker 7: in a certain way, like, that he knows he can
- 1:28:36Speaker 7: make any play on the field. So I would say
- 1:28:38Speaker 7: he's not really vocal yet. but he carries his way,
- 1:28:41Speaker 7: he carries himself a certain way, like, as you know, like,
- 1:28:44Speaker 7: he got it in him. We just got to just
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: keep getting out of him. And I feel like much
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: check been doing that with him since.
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: He's been here, literally.
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: But it's definitely some young guys, but them names I named,
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: They definitely stand out for sure.
- 1:28:56Speaker 8: Yeah, for sure, Richard Wesley. I feel like he's done
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: a great job since the spring.
- 1:28:59Speaker 12: He's came in with a certain level of intensity that
- 1:29:01Speaker 12: I feel like is uncommon with freshmen. He didn't take
- 1:29:03Speaker 12: a backseat to anybody. He kind of came in with
- 1:29:05Speaker 12: his mindset on doing a certain thing, and he's been
- 1:29:07Speaker 12: playing really well. So I'm super excited to see him
- 1:29:10Speaker 12: out there because he's proven time and time again that
- 1:29:12Speaker 12: he's hard to block. So he's someone I'm really excited for.
- 1:29:15Speaker 12: Same with JC, Jamarian Carlson. He's someone who's a goofy guy,
- 1:29:20Speaker 12: but when he gets on the field, he's someone who,
- 1:29:22Speaker 12: who can go out there and ball. So I'm excited
- 1:29:24Speaker 12: for both those young guys to go out there and
- 1:29:25Speaker 12: prove themselves.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: One more here from Raheem Biles. Of course, you're getting ready.
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: There's been, again, one of the other big themes at
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: the Monday Media availability was about the aggressive nature and
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: the explosive, up-tempo, high-octane, fast-paced, nature and direction of the
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: Texas State offense they're going to see it right out
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: of the gate first game of the season so Biles
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: was asked are there some advantages of seeing something early
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: in the season that they will undoubtedly see again.
- 1:30:02Speaker 7: It's very huge because like we're saying this tempo is
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: probably going to be the the biggest challenge but obviously
- 1:30:08Speaker 7: we're going to see it again with Ole Miss or
- 1:30:10Speaker 7: not Ole Miss but probably LSU now with Tennessee like
- 1:30:13Speaker 7: we know them teams is going to run tempo so
- 1:30:16Speaker 7: just seeing it now being able to adapt our bodies
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: adapt our brains just to know we got to get
- 1:30:21Speaker 7: lined up.
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: There's no time to celebrate after a play.
- 1:30:23Speaker 7: You got to get back to the ball, get the signal,
- 1:30:25Speaker 7: get the play call, and then go execute at a
- 1:30:27Speaker 7: high level.
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: It's going to be.
- 1:30:29Speaker 7: A good challenge for us, but we're happy. Like you said,
- 1:30:31Speaker 7: it's great to see it this week one so we
- 1:30:33Speaker 7: can be prepared for it down the line, definitely.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: So there's some Longhorn talk as well.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: Coming up tomorrow, we'll hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian. Remember, our season premiered of Longhorn Weekly with
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Coach Sark. It comes your way tomorrow afternoon at 5.30.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: And it normally will be heard at 7 o'clock. But
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: because we have a Round Rock Express game whose coverage
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: begins at 6.50, it will start at 5.30, Longhorn Weekly
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: with Coach Sark, our first program of the season. And
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: I can tell you, at least I've been told, our
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: special guest, We have a different guest each week. Our
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: special guest tomorrow, the man in charge, the athletic director,
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: Chris Del Conte, will join us tomorrow on that program.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: So you can hear it tomorrow afternoon at 5.30. Coming up,
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: we'll hear more from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach,
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: when we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: You've got a weight on your shoulders.
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: How you ever gonna find the words to say goodnight?
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: It was one of their hits.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: Maybe not the most popular when you consider, like, Lonesome
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Loser or Help Is On The Way or, you.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Know, Happy Anniversary.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: But Man On Your Mind was a hit from Little
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: River Band. One of those yacht rock bands that you
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: say could be on a Mount Rushmore if you're talking
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: about just bands alone. on that we continue on a
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: yacht rock Wednesday here on 1300 the zone and some
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: more from Ryan Schottenheimer the Cowboys head coach who was
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: asked about the addition of Amari DiMarcato the one-time TC
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: running back had been with Arizona and had been banged
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: up and what he brings not only into the backfield
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: but also the special teams to this.
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: Team really excited about Newey um you know This guy's got,
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: I think, 20 explosives over the last couple of years.
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: He's really, you know, and some of that's been with Clayton,
- 1:32:43Speaker 6: you know, off some of the G schemes and the
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: counter schemes.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: That they've been running. Got very good vision.
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: He's a build-up speed guy that's got explosive play, making ability.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: We love his pass protection.
- 1:32:53Speaker 6: He's a really good pass protector, both understanding the scheme,
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: but also in executing the protection principles. I think that's
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: really important. And then on special teams, you know, he's
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: He's been a guy that's played a number of different
- 1:33:06Speaker 6: roles for the different teams, and so he's a valued member.
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: That was one that we were hoping would work out
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: for us in the claim picture, and it did.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: He's a terrific young man, too. I think.
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: Not just Clayton, but anybody that's been around him, Ryan Smith.
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: We had a couple guys in Arizona. They all spoke
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: to the young man, and what a great fit he
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: would be in our locker room, which we obviously hold.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: In high regard as well.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: Next, Von Miller, of course, is with the Cowboys now,
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: and they've been slowly integrating him into it, and might
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: he be able to make an early impact on this club?
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you see the natural pass rush ability.
- 1:33:47Speaker 6: You know, Garrett, I think, you know, when you watch
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: him in the one-on-ones and few reps that he's gotten
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: because he's been in a ramp up, you do see that,
- 1:33:54Speaker 6: you know, his first step quickness, his understanding of how
- 1:33:57Speaker 6: to attack tackles, angles, and break down their hands. And,
- 1:34:01Speaker 6: you know, I think he's probably the longest tenured guy
- 1:34:03Speaker 6: with BT Jordan in terms of the— You know, the
- 1:34:07Speaker 6: pass rush moves and the tools in your toolbox and
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: all that stuff, but also the impact that he's had
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: with some of the younger players. I talked a couple
- 1:34:15Speaker 6: weeks ago about it's not just the pass rushers that
- 1:34:17Speaker 6: he works with.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: He talks to the tackles. He talks to different people.
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: And he's one of the most energetic guys on game day,
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: even during the preseason. You're in preseason three of year three. 16,
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: 17 for him. And first one to run out there
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: and congratulate a guy when they make a big play, offense, defense.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: And I think the guys feel that.
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: You know, as a follow-up, remember Von Miller was a
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: part of that Rams defense, won the Super Bowl. And
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: of course, they had Aaron Donald. Now Aaron Donald is
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: back with the Rams. And Sean Embers asked about that. And,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: you know, if you could... if you could bring somebody
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: out of retirement, who might that be?
- 1:35:01Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Well, I saw a picture of him. He looks pretty good.
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: So, uh, he's been training a little different than differently
- 1:35:06Speaker 6: than I have. Um, but, uh, you know, a great player.
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: It's good for the game, you know, and just, you know,
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: gives a good team, another great player, but, uh, we've
- 1:35:16Speaker 6: got a little time till we have to see him.
- 1:35:17Speaker 9: Who would be your back home call to bring out
- 1:35:19Speaker 9: of retirement? If you could like Sean McVay with him.
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: No.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Um, I'm going to just take a shot, and I'm
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: going to go Michael Irvin. You know what I mean?
- 1:35:29Speaker 8: Why?
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: He's right here somewhere. Mike, you around? The same room
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: as me. Huh? You can never have enough good receivers.
- 1:35:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: Take Michael Irvin if you could be back and be
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: in playing shape. Of course, we mentioned they're going to
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: open with the New York Giants a week from Sunday night.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: And Sean Emmer was asked about the pace of ramping
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: up toward that game without front-loading too much of it.
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: The biggest thing that, again, I want to emphasize is
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: this week is, there's things that you hold, Todd. There's
- 1:35:59Speaker 6: a scheme that you hold until your roster is a
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: little bit more put together.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: It's never finalized. This thing changes fast. You guys know that.
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: But there's some concepts and things that we've held that
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: we haven't shown. Because we know teams are going to be,
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: players are going to be moving all over. So that's
- 1:36:12Speaker 6: part of it. So when I talk about taking care
- 1:36:14Speaker 6: of yourself and the self-scout and primary, secondary, game plan
- 1:36:18Speaker 6: specific slots for all of your scheme, that's first. And
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: then you begin the process of... looking at the Giants.
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: So like I said, last night I looked at a
- 1:36:30Speaker 6: little bit of Tennessee film, Tennessee Titan film and Denard
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: Wilson's defense.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: But I'm not diving in.
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: We'll have a Monday practice where it's all carded and
- 1:36:41Speaker 6: we begin our process into the Giants, but then the
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: players get Tuesday off.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: It's all part of the league mandated break these guys get.
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: So the cadence that we hope for is that, you know,
- 1:36:52Speaker 6: we get a little bit ahead this week, but without
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: going overboard because we don't want to waste time next week.
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: And so we'll feel good going into Monday's practice. We'll
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: get some work Monday, try some things maybe that we like,
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: but don't, you know, have a ton of history in
- 1:37:07Speaker 6: and see if those make it the final cut. And
- 1:37:10Speaker 6: then once Tuesday hits, we're into a normal game plan
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: game in season mode.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: So there is Brian Schottenheimer as the Cowboys continue their
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: ramp up toward their season opener.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: A week from Sunday.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: program on 13 Under the Zone.
