- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: The biggest thing that was the hardest for me is getting over myself limiting beliefs.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: in the beginning.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like that was step one for me when I started to sort of say now like this feels insane that I want to do this but like I want to do this and my curiosity is pulling me and when my curiosity really is peaked and I feel scared and terrified.

- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.

- 1:13[SPEAKER_02]: Hello.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, be it babe.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the podcast.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: This is so fun.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Cause you're about to hear a two women who never met, but totally love each other already.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: Just connect and share stories and our guest today as their roads of comedy shows and
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: Like one of the things a little bit as podcasts is I get to meet some really insanely amazing people and also like hopefully start wonderful relationships at any rate.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_02]: I really was excited to share her story with you because I do think it's what you need right now.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_02]: You need to hear a story about someone who's not a shoe manufacturer making the most amazing shoes.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: You need to hear about a woman who had a very, very successful career pivot to doing something she's never done before.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_02]: And you need to hear that, you know, you can do all these things while being a wife and a mother and be authentic to yourself and do the things that let you up.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm super excited for this episode.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to let you get right into it.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you Sarah Rhodes of being here.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: And here she is.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, be it babe.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna tell you right now that like today's guest and I aren't best friends yet, but I hope in the future we are because I already love her so much.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_02]: I've been falling for a while.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: I will say probably our first guest that I like got me by an ad.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: But our audience knows that I'm someone who's like, I'm gonna click on that ad.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: I love being cooking.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: I love when ads follow me around or mine me of the things that
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: I want to have.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: And so today's guest is the founder of combi shoes and its sererodes.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my gosh.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: Hello.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the via pod.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: Can you tell everyone who you are and what you rock?
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: I just in case they haven't, but they didn't find you through Instagram like me.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first up, I'm so happy to be here Leslie and thanks so much for having me.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: You just have such a great energy and I love other women that are doing great stuff.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: I am a photographer turned entrepreneur and as Leslie said, I own combi which is a shoe company.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a founder of it that basically I created the dream shoes that I myself couldn't find and I went and created them.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: I've never made shoes before.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: This is all just like if you told me ten years ago, this is what I'd be doing now.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: I would have surprised myself.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I did a complete life pivot.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: In I'm boardy this year and I basically went from a really successful career as a lifestyle fashion photographer shooting for Fortune one hundred brands to doing combat, which is now I make shoes.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_02]: I I of obsessed and like I really.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I feel like, you know, like, I got stalked by your gorgeous shoes.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I just was like, it was winter time.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, I don't need this yet.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: I was on tour.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, what does like it?
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: And then it was like, the seventh one.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, okay, I'll just die I'm now so they're at home when I get home.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: And I DM you about a question about, because okay, you guys, we're going to get into issues in a second.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: I thought I'm going to do our journey, but I just want to say the shoes, why I was obsessed with them is like, oh, I could just take the insult out and change it.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: So I have because I'm someone who needs to have a lot of shoes like my mother.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_02]: She probably, I was probably not a nice compliment, but she was like, you're like, like, the woman from the Philippines was a million shoes.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, yeah, I do.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: I love shoes.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: I have no, but like, T-shirts, guys, I only have shoes and sweatshirts, but I, so I was upset.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_02]: And you, yourself DM'd be back.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, another founder who returned DM's.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm already, so now I'm like, well, now I'm following.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm in a stock, you a little bit.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm all about the cut.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: I like love interacting with people.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: The building is like what I'm all about and I created these shoes as much for myself as I did for others and to help people and I was like.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: So I really like to, like, talk, like, I still Chris, Chris handles all my husband and co-founder Chris handles all of the customer service emails.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: I handle all of the DS all of the socials.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, we're like in it.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: No, I feel like we have an amazing customer service team too, but like, I do read all my games.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_02]: People like, oh, it's you.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, yeah, I like how will I know what to create if I don't talk to you before we go into why your shoes are so amazing, even more though.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: You are a successful lifestyle photographer like there was no need to change anything except that you wanted amazing choose for yourself.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_02]: How do you like I know lots of our listeners like how do you make a pivot like that because it's not like you're like oh I'm going to be a photographer and then I'm going to like
- 5:40[SPEAKER_02]: You know, make a camera.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_02]: Something that you familiar with.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_02]: You're like, no, I'm going to make a shoe.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: And as someone who also makes products, like, you don't know.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: Think of this.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: You don't know what you don't know when you get into it because otherwise you wouldn't, but like, how did you make that pivot?
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, you know, to start a little bit back my husband and I met when we were eighteen in college and we have been working on creative endeavors together like since we met and so, you know, in some kind of entrepreneurial fashion, you know, basically what started as
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: Creative services through the photography.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we've shot Taylor Swift for kids like all these brands and really I think alignment is a really important thing to me and I'm very I always feel like I'm very attuned to when I feel like I'm not on the right path and they're started to become a point.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: I have three kids that are eight, six and three.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they're started to become a point where I was just feeling not as creatively invigorated by the things I was working on in advertising.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: I will always be a storyteller because it's just who I am.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: I love the talk or faith.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: However, it started to just feel like this isn't as fulfilling to me and my purpose and my calling at this stage in my life as I needed to be.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: So there was that coupled with I was a dancer and I had good issues and being on set.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: I would be shooting people for twelve hours a day on my feet.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a tennis shoe girly.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: I do not wear heels.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: I have like sort of some foot issues.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I tried every shoe in the game.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: I tried dance goes.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: Broken stocks.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: The Vince Meals.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like if it was like stylish and, you know, net apporte like styles that I like, they had zero support.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: If it was like, you know, orthotic, yonic, all this kind of stuff, it was grandma looking.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: And so I had resorted to putting insults into my jewels.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: And my clogs and my slides on said, and my husband was like, this looks so bad, Sarah, because like my little like in a soul would be flopping around.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's awful, because I were like, open back shoes.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: We live in Cal, and that's like my lifestyle.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so basically, we set out, like, this was like three years ago now to sort of say, let's get a three-day printer.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: My husband taught himself AutoCAD and we started inventing essentially like,
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: How could we take a like allow people the opportunity to completely like first off create a supportive shoe.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: So we worked with Petitress to create a shoe that's number one that's the need that I needed, which was supportive and then.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: design it in styles that I myself wear, but then allow people to modulate it like based on the season or their preference.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: So for example, I hated how my odds, the shirling would go flat after season.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd have to throw away this beautiful.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that I was like, this feels so wasteful to me.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: What if I could just like switch out that element?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then keep the whole show like it feels more sustainable.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: It feels more like practical.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a practical lady.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: And so that is how we came to basically file for our patent after we've did several thousands of iterations on like, how could we make this work where you could modulate just the fed and allow people to be creative, allow people to be in the driver's seat of what they want.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: provide something that's more sustainable in a way.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's became like, well, okay, I guess we're inventing a new way to do shoes.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: And you, I mean, like, literally, like, that's why I don't have any of the shit, like, I had bought the Shirley in Birkenstock.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, oh, those are so cute.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's like four years ago.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: I needed some house slippers in the summer.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_02]: You know, our house is tile.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone's so view.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: If you like around tile with bare feet, you just get ugly feet.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, oh, I'll have these like, surely, no, within a summer, it's like rub now and it's ugly.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: And now I have this shoe that is perfectly fine.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_02]: It has not been worn enough.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then also to do, okay, get this.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: So I interviewed one of the founders of Gate Happens, G-A-I-T Gate Happens on this podcast.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_02]: It hasn't released yet, but you've got to check it out.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I said, oh, my husband wears like Birkenstock.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: This is all in shoe he wears.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes, I give it a B-minus.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: name and that I hate I don't I'm not here to this right we're not you're not missing I'll bring up their name but I am sure to save for not not for everybody like I work is like hard it's like I didn't like that it took such a break in period so it's like why don't I create a supportive shoe that has a memory foam that doesn't have the break in period of a broken stock like why try something different yeah yeah
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so I'm sure people would call on, so you're forty, you have three kids under ten.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: You might, you're like a superhero.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: And you and your family may this transition together.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like there are so many questions I have there, which is like to switch financially your whole thing over and then to be present for children, but also like not burn yourself out.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: Can you tell us the process you went through?
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay, so and I'm still going through it to be totally honest with you.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a pivot, the biggest thing that was the hardest for me is getting over myself limiting beliefs in the beginning.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like that was step one for me when I started to sort of say now like
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: This feels insane that I want to do this, but like I want to do this and my curiosity is pulling me and when my curiosity really is peaked and I feel scared and terrified.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: I usually know that that is the thing I need to go after that's sort of my recipe for like.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: I know that's on my path of alignment and I kept feeling that.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so I really had to do a lot of work to break down myself limiting beliefs number one, to even step into this space of like, I can do this, you know, and so much so I had, you know, this, this on my home screen of my iPhone, I had like,
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think that said what if you have what it takes you know it's still on there actually what if you have what it takes because I had so many moments of like this isn't saying no one's going to understand you Sarah like why would you do like people are going to be like what are you doing like
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: And all those self-doubt things that cost her syndrome, we all deal with when we pivot or weren't even thinking about pivoting.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I just started to reframe that for myself to be like, no, I am deeply curious about what are the edges of my ability.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what am I capable of and like to find that out?
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: I have to go to the edge of my fear and look over the edge of it.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: And entrepreneurship so much in this journey for me has so much been as much as it's been an external one.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's more of an internal one for myself.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I do this and do I have what it takes and I do.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think all people can do all things genuinely.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: And it started there and then of course my husband and I as co-founders had to really come together of like
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, can we utilize our previous skill set, which we've done our ten thousand hours plus on mastering.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: Is that way to partly that also to be a strength in this new world and there is like we just shot our comedy campaign for all of the new material like we utilize our skill sets that we have used in our previous we're the road studio.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: all the time like all of our network of models and you know all of that is used in this new business which is so cool and I think like trusting that and knowing like hey I didn't know how to make a product but I learned got on a plane and you can learn anything if you're curious enough and willing to be like moldable
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think anything is possible.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's kind of we launched August last year and we've had an idea.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: I had no idea.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_02]: I had no idea.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think Stane.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so it's not even a year old yet.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, we're going on our first year and like, I mean, we've been working on this behind the scenes for like three years.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: So it feels a lot older to us, but it's also, you know, we're a new company, a new business.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: And every day is learning.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_01]: And as an entrepreneur, as you know, every day is learning.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: And for me, the meaning of life is to learn to grow into expand.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so for me, this is checking all those boxes every single day when I went
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: I learn new things every day.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: I do every day.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, okay, like, well, and also what happens is like you, unless you take time to reflect, you don't realize like the things you learned a year ago, you're actually now an expert at and you're slaying, but there's just a new new thing.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: And with everything that goes on all the time, you're kind of like, okay, okay, so how do I, how do I take what I believe in and exist in this area?
- 15:04[SPEAKER_02]: Because this area has changed now, but I want to exist like this here.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_02]: And so you are, you know what, it's a lot.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_02]: If they say like, if you want to learn about yourself, become an entrepreneur, because you really learn about yourself.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's true.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's true.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like deeply curious about like, okay, what are the depths of my ability and like my capacity, you know, and yeah, you learn it.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: You're scared every day.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for me, what I'm like retraining my brain right now, the work I'm doing is to learn.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: that this is what it is.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: This is normal problem solving problems is that is what it is to be a founder.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: That is what it is to be an entrepreneur.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: You grow out of a system.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: You expand into something else.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, we're having to expand warehouses right now because we grew out of this.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's like,
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: At first, there was like, oh, oh, no, it's something wrong.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, that is, that is what it is.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's big hearing things out and, you know, like, that's what entrepreneurship is.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's create a problem solving a lot of it.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, we'll congrats on and I'll growing your first warehouse or maybe it's your second already, but I
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: I want to highlight what we know is, like, what we've seen as almost year old, but that you guys have been working behind the scenes for three years.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that that's the thing that no matter how many times I hear it, I have to share it because
- 16:30[SPEAKER_02]: because we are like oh my god look at the successful brand here look at what they're doing and it's like you didn't see the three to four years of sweat tears wonder fear lots of money invested like yes you you actually are seeing the there is no such thing as an overnight success like we know this and we and I live like you'd still live in LA but I live in like we know
- 16:51[SPEAKER_02]: no one is an overnight movie star that was like a decade of auditions and like little roles in the background and all these different things and they filmed this thing two years ago and they've just been waiting for us to all see it so you know I think it's like we have to be reminded of that because if you have an idea that you are going for in your feeling frustrated because it's been a year
- 17:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's been three to four years before the rest of us, like, before, and then also, like, do you just heard me say, like, took like seven times for me to go, yeah, I think, you know, like, the world is like taking its time to site, making decisions.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_02]: So what it wants to do with your product.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's not personal.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, that's how long things take.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say like I would encourage anybody who's like in that phase of like building behind the scenes, I feel like that's it's truly one of the hardest phases because no one can see what you're doing and you have to have this like self determined belief in yourself and what you're doing and that takes it's really hard to do that work, but like
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: Stick with it like stick it out because I feel like really good things are always on the other side of that like that curiosity and that sort of determination, but it's really hard to do that that type of that space that's the building phase where no one can see what you're doing and you're just like
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: I'm creating this thing.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: I hope people will like it.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: I hope people will like be Bennett.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like it will help their life.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then when you get to launch and you see like it does.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: And you hear from customers being like, my gosh, I love this.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love your shoes.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: They're like exactly what I want.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's like, oh, I didn't just create the shoes for me.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: I created them for...
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, other people too.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean, like just to give you a compliment to your face and like because you need it and another one.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure as a business, I'm always like, give me all the comments on my things.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: You're like, I am almost a size ten foot.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so like slides were never awesome because my heels would somehow hit the ground.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: No one wants
- 18:58[SPEAKER_02]: They're you know what I mean and then like and then I have a wide toe box but a narrow heel and it's just it always been an issue so I was a tennis shoe girly because like that's it.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's the only shoes I would stay on my feet and keep on and so but I and like oh these shoes I feel
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I feel luxurious in.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like they're, you know, these are not just like, like, when I put my broken stocks on, yes, I still, I have some pairs.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I'm like, okay, this is a laid-back.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I know the girlie.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 19:37[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't want to be a granola girl every day like I want to be a girl like that's I am a girl like girl people like I love like I just did a photo shoot That I haven't put some of the fixtures up yet, but like it's upset I'm obsessed we're rebranding the podcast and I got this green Emerald green like Wizard of Oz green fur coat
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's like your color girl.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's so good.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, and like, I'm like this.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_02]: And then I put it, we did a whole fashion shoot at the Plaza Hotel because they have all the light bulbs.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm just like upset.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it was amazing.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'll have to show you when we're done.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's fucking phenomenal.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: Anyways, but like I was like, I want a casual shoe that makes me feel girly.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_02]: So like,
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: Congratulations, you nailed it and I can't wait to see who comes out.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: Also, since you live in LA, do you know Ripley because the two of you should be best friends if you're not Ripley Raider?
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know her?
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, your shoes.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: Here's my vision.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think you and Ripley should do a collab together.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: Your shoes with her clothes, insane and you're both photographers.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: You guys, Ripley is her brand.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: Ripley radar.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the perfect pant also.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you gotta introduce us.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna introduce you guys because in my perfect world like you got like her lines with your shoes like fabulous and then because you're both photographers and you're both in LA like this should this is just a magical match.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just gonna make it happen I'm at her through the podcast they approached me and I was like as is the woman whose pants keep falling me around my Instagram.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I want to interview her and
- 21:08[SPEAKER_02]: And now I have a bunch of our clothes and I wear them with your shoes and I love it.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: So okay, I want to go like the things what are the things you do when you're like feeling it because
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think the thing that makes more, that makes an entrepreneur move faster, because we all are gonna fill obstacles.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: We are problem solving every day, but like the quicker you get to like overcoming the fear of failure.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: And noticing your ish, like the quicker you can move through it.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: Like how do you move through that fear or the obstacles?
- 21:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like what are the tools you use?
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have a mantra?
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have music?
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: Like what do you do?
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Man, I feel like there's a couple things.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: I, it's not like a formal mantra but something I say every single day is.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: Everything is working out for my better good like a greater good everything is working out for us like Chris and I this morning literally like he made me a copy and despite like there's a lot going on in the world right now tariffs impact our business like we could sit there and like sort of focus on that but we just said to each other like everything's working out for us like everything is working out for us and it really it's not sort of
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: BS, like I really genuinely believe that when you look at my life, when I look at, like, the now that I have some wisdom of life, I'm like, oh, like everything is genuinely working out for us.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I also believe that everything leads to everything as silly as I have this, this other female founder that I love and I'll always like, Sheena of Cosa.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: She's
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: a badass and she has been kind enough like I shot her very first campaign when she had one lipstick like years and years ago and she's helped me on my journey as a founder of product and she is the one who told me she's like everything leads to everything and just trusting that has been a really powerful mantra for me just in terms of like knowing that even if there's a setback
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: Guess what everything leads to everything like or this relationship it might feel like just a dead end call guess what like those things down the road lead to other things they really do and so like I feel like part of being an entrepreneur as being someone who has an appetite for adventure because like
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: the way that I sort of akin it to is like, you're in the woods with a machete like a hatchet going through the woods.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: There's no trail.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: There's no trail heads.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: There are no maps.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: And you're going to the woods with a machete trying to forge a path up this mountain.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: And you see these like beautiful people or rivers along the way that are like, oh, good water.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's like a little light over there.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: And that little light ends up being a person that's like, you know what, like a sheena or these like,
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: someone that's like, hey, you should meet Ripley, like, who knows what that leads to?
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever it is, and they're like, you know what?
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, you should go over that way and talk to this person.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: You start going on that path with your machete and then before you know it, you have a manufacturing partner that's fantastic and you are, you have a great, like,
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: product that you're like working on making better.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: And anyway, I just, I, I feel like that for me, keeping that mentality of being an adventurer has been like really paramount to trusting the process even when you have setbacks.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Even when you're in the woods with your machete, and you don't see the way forward.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: Just like, you know what?
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: I have to trust that it's all part of the plan.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_02]: It is so true.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_02]: It is so true.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like,
- 24:45[SPEAKER_02]: As you were saying, I was just thinking like all the different things that happened.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: So before we hit record, I live in Las Vegas, right?
- 24:53[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking about the reason we own a home is because the world shut down.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: not because like we like plan and put it out to oh if we have a life plan together we're gonna do this you guys Brad and I would have lived in that five in a script apartment forever we would have bought a vacation home instead of that apartment if we could have kept traveling because you don't realize how small it is when you're not there so like but we we're here in this beautiful like the house of my dreams because
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: Even when things happen outside your control, everything is working out for you.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_02]: If you believe it, if you're not believing that, you don't see the opportunities and you don't see the connections and the introductions as a light of like, oh, look over here, you're seeing it as like another thing that is like keeping you or just another busy thing.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_02]: You don't see you, you know, like I really do think that when you believe that things will work out,
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: You are actually, you'll actually see the opportunities as evidence of that.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like that's exactly what you're pointing to.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I feel like in our busy culture of like everything's about efficiency and like, oh, our task list, I never want to turn people into tasks like never.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: And so for me, it's like,
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: If we can keep this spirit of like, this is all about like life is about how we can grow from each other and how we can learn from each other.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just try to keep that spirit about every interaction knowing I can learn something from everybody.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I love what you're saying, like not turning things all these things into to do lists, turning them into opportunities in your mind.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think it's really powerful.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: So it helps me.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for sharing that.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_02]: I, okay.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_02]: your mom, your wife, your business owner, your you, you have so many things.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_02]: How do you prioritize you in all of this?
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: Because it can be so easy.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, we love our people.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_02]: We don't want them to be to do this.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_02]: They be almost like, like, I work with a lot of applies instructors and they look love their clients so much that they don't take care of the things that continue to make them light up anymore.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_02]: And it bends on the burnout route, right?
- 27:05[SPEAKER_02]: So like, how do you make sure that you're still you in all of this?
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a really good question.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like burnout is a very real, you know, thing as you know, we're always like right flying real close to the sun there on burnout.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm being honest, when you're building a business building a company, it's especially through like the holiday season, like Chris and I were like, okay, we got to like, we got to step back a little bit from this.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's all like just it, you know, and I feel like
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: For me, how do I stay mean?
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: I protect my autonomy pretty fiercely.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I just feel like it's just who I am.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: I love to read.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I like him in this amazing book club that I like make time for.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's something totally extracurricular, but these women inspire me.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: They're incredible.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: I love hearing other people's perspectives.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: I am all about nature and hiking.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: I go out and I'm being nature like three days a week.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like those are the things that for me keep me from burnout is like doing a few things every week that I love, you know, that are outside of like what makes me money, you know, what can I be doing to better my business?
- 28:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's being in touch with the things that make Sarah me feel alive and then knowing like that'll make me a better mom, a better founder, a better creative, all those things that I need to be, you know, so.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, thank you for sharing that.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think I love that you're in a book club that you make time for.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I think it's so like I, we have a lot of people like how do you make friends in the adult?
- 28:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, you have to just go do things and hope and like if you don't like it, go do something else.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's okay.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, it is hard.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's hard to, there's always a reason.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you, like I just wanted you to all replay that.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: Remember, she is a founder of a new company.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_02]: She works with her husband and she has three kids under ten and she has, she has, she has things she does for herself every week.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I love that so much.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_02]: I really, I really, really do.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, what are you most excited about right now?
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: I am so excited about my new line that is coming out in three weeks.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: On my gosh, I'm gonna give you like a little sneak peek at them.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: Stop right now.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: I need them already.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: Stop right now.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: I need them already.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: Again, part of like listening to customers and like is it's part of us handling customer services.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like I want to know like what do people want to see more?
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: What else?
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: I want hot pink.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_02]: I want that red.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I'm listening.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: No, people wanted real napa levers.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: My first was vegan.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Now I've got I'll still offer vegan option for those ladies who want that or men who want that, but I also have some amazing like supple.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's like it's like lamb skin levers that are just so chic and look so good.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: You guys, if you're not already watching the via pod on YouTube, you need to now and also by the time this is out, they're out.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: So go get them.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then I have some just cool styles that are all adjustable.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I have like back scraps and like some things that like people wanted for walking around your up things like that, like there's backstops adjustable sort of
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: Please, I'm just so excited about this line.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: I also improved the product immensely.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: I took a god on a plane to Asia.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_01]: When I started to hear a couple things, like, I had enough time with my own product to be like, I want to take the weed out of the shoes a little bit.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so I worked with my engineering team.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: People tell me, you can't do it.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: You can't do it.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Bob, Bob, I've got for these reasons.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: I sat there and I like didn't book a return flight until this was solved and basically we came up with a unique compound for our shoes that allows the interchangeability to all work and just just like super I'm just super excited about this line.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: I feel really proud of it.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's designed with really nice textiles and I have a really good supplier.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really excited about.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, all of it, the designs are pretty fire.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: But that's what I'm excited about.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: I am so, like, she held up a red.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, because I just, I love an accent.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: I love these.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I'm about to pre-release these because I've had so many people asking.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm gonna get that link before I go.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_02]: Brad is going, Brad is rolling his eyes.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_02]: Let's zoom into this.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure when he listen later, he's asleep right now.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_02]: But he'll listen to this on a replay movie for prep.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I know, I know exactly where he's just going.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, my wife.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: I've got to get in some pommies.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'll get him some coffee.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we, we, we'll do it.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then we'll do the couple photo for you.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_02]: We'll do every time.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll make it happen.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then when we come to LA, we're going to have to come see you because like, of course, we'll have to have dinner.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: Because it's not all the time.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: Amy couples who work together and are cool.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: And they work together well.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: There's, I have so many questions for you about that.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: So yes, a dinner is on our computer.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I mean, we've been working together.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_02]: So he fluttered with me by building me a website.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: You guys, we were dating and he was like, you're, you knew website.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I like, you know, as a plasma instructor and I thought I was under the first plasma instructor to have like a their own website.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: Like I got out of Pilates training and I had a website ready to go and like, that people have been teaching ten years to have a website.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_02]: So I thought I was a slain.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: And then I met him.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'd been teaching for like seven years.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, so you've to have a, like, this is old.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_02]: You need a new website and I'm like why it's working just fine.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_02]: So he built me a new one and then and then as I was building my companies which you know bad thing guys don't build the same three things at the same time because if they work out you have three and it's a lot so anyways he
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: started like working with me doing things behind the scenes.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_02]: And finally, I was just like, can you just like, can you just work with me all the time?
- 32:46[SPEAKER_02]: And so he's been full time since twenty nineteen, which has been really, really cool and really fun and also allowed me to like not be the CEO of my company because I'm not as, I don't know what you, I don't, I'm not a CEO.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a co-CEO, but Chris does ops test.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, all of the things that like are the behind the scenes, I'm community building.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, you're your dynamic.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, have a whole podcast about working as a team with your side note.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_02]: We'll have to have you back and we'll have to like do a co, well, the four of us can talk with all of us.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, because it's like you have to, well, it's also just recognizing your strengths.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like this is what I'm really good at.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really good at the community.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really good at the vision.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really good at like seeing the big picture and like how like it's going to relate down the thing.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_02]: And like a meeting on how this system is going to work is like, I want to know, but I don't want to be in the one hundred person for all where this thing is like, this is some people.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, they got for them.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's not my wheelhouse.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we, so we make applies flashcards and on our winter tour, we went.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_02]: We were like in near the place at the warehouse at Prince our flashcards and and and fills everything at the front of the house.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_02]: And so, Brad, like, we're going to go see how this is made.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, I don't
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: I don't really actually, I'm not lit up by this.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, like, I, he's... Find your strengths.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, look at everything.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, look at this and it goes in here first and they go, this first and I was just like, this is, oh, I don't know how someone envisioned this actually.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like, the guy who envisioned the systems that print flashcards and boxes down the whole thing.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, that person's amazing.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm for that guy.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: And it's because I don't have to be the person who does it.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_02]: Anyways, okay, I could talk to you forever, but we're gonna take a brief break and then find out people can find you, follow you, and get your amazing shoes.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Sarah, where do you hang out?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_02]: What socials are we sharing?
- 34:47[SPEAKER_02]: Where can they pre-order these amazing shoes or just order them because they'll be out by now?
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, Cumbi, C-O-M-M-B-I.co.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: And then you can get on our mailing list.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: That'll be how you find out new hot pre releases coming at you.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then our Instagram handle is at Cumbi underscore official.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, that's, that's us.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_02]: Wonderful.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_02]: You've given so many great tips, but I can't get enough of you.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_02]: So bold, executable, intrinsic, or targeted steps, our listeners can take to be it till they see it.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_02]: What do you have for us?
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think knowing, deepen your soul, that everything's working out for you and knowing that anyone can do anything, entrusting yourself and believing in yourself.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's the biggest thing that I would say.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_02]: I love those.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think you've said a few things that I'll be on post it to my office for a little bit and I'll just think of you.
