- 0:16Welcome back to Rise and Thrive with Doctor J Nicole.
- 0:19And I'm your host, Doctor J Nicole.
- 0:22And today we are officially opening the conversation to what
- 0:26I'm calling the runway to the month of love.
- 0:31February gets all of the attention, The roses, the
- 0:35dinners, the captions, the pictures.
- 0:38But January, January is where clarity lives.
- 0:43So before we talk about the love letters, relationships and
- 0:46romance, next month we're going to slow it down and talk about
- 0:51discernment. Because love without discernment
- 0:55turns into confusion. And confusion is expensive in
- 1:00many ways. And more than anything, it's
- 1:03expensive emotionally. So today's episode is about red
- 1:07flags, green flags, and yes, even beige flags.
- 1:14Not to judge, not to shame, but to see clearly.
- 1:19And throughout this episode and for the rest of the month, I'll
- 1:22be inviting you to send in your letters.
- 1:26I want real dating questions, real situations, real.
- 1:31Am I tripping or is this a sign? Moments.
- 1:34I'll be reading and responding to them all throughout February.
- 1:40So let's get into it. What flags really are.
- 1:44So let's start here. A flag is not a personality
- 1:49trait. A flag is a pattern.
- 1:53And a red flag in particular, you know we hear a lot about
- 1:56that one, right? It isn't, Oh, they were late
- 1:59once. A red flag is they're
- 2:02consistently laid and dismissive when it's mentioned.
- 2:06So it's not just about the lateness lateness, it's about
- 2:10their response to being held accountable, but about the
- 2:15lateness. Now, a green flag, this isn't,
- 2:20they said, the right thing one time.
- 2:24The green flag is the consistency over time.
- 2:29Pretty simple, right? And then you have the beige
- 2:32flags. Beige flags, they're not toxic,
- 2:36they're not harmful, but they are data.
- 2:40They are important information. Those beige flags tell you, this
- 2:46might not be aligned with me. That beige flag is that thing
- 2:51that gives you a little bit of pause, that thing that makes
- 2:54your eyebrow go up, or that thing that just doesn't settle
- 2:58right? Does that make sense?
- 3:01So let me give you an example page flag.
- 3:04So like they're kind, but they're emotionally unavailable.
- 3:10It's so like you want to engage with them.
- 3:12There's not a clear no, but it's like you don't quite know where
- 3:17you stand, right? So like they're stable, but you
- 3:21feel like you're doing all of the emotional labor and there's
- 3:25nothing wrong with it. It just isn't right and it may
- 3:29not meet your needs and where you are right now.
- 3:33So here's the key. You don't need a villain to
- 3:38choose differently. And I think a lot of times we
- 3:42lose a lot of our time and we invest emotionally with people
- 3:49who are kind, but they may not truly be available for what we
- 3:54desire. And there's almost like this
- 3:57notion like they have to be the awful person for you to not give
- 4:01them a chance for that classic. Oh, well, you never know.
- 4:05You should give it a try, right? And then before you know it,
- 4:09you're locked in with this personally person emotionally,
- 4:13and you're not quite getting your needs met.
- 4:17Something's missing. And it's not all bad.
- 4:20You'll connect with them. You'll have a great time with
- 4:23them, but they'll be something missing.
- 4:27OK, so let's shift a little bit and we're going to talk about
- 4:31common red flags that sometimes we explain away.
- 4:36Have you ever heard anybody say, oh, they're just busy?
- 4:40Oh, they just, you know, she's just a little bit guarded.
- 4:45They've been hurt before that they've been hurt before.
- 4:48Oh baby, that got me in so much trouble, y'all, And it cost me
- 4:52many years of my life. And when you know better, you do
- 4:58better. And also understand these things
- 5:01could be very true. Just because somebody might be
- 5:03busy guarded or they've been hurt before, that doesn't
- 5:06disqualify them. However, the context matters and
- 5:14how they show up matters. Compassion matters.
- 5:17And patterns, they matter more. Like I said, patterns are data.
- 5:22People show you who they are. They also tell you who they are.
- 5:27Are you listening? Are you watching?
- 5:30And I'm not saying this to say you have to like be on guard and
- 5:34keep your head on swivel, but pay attention to how you feel in
- 5:39your body when you're with people, when you're experiencing
- 5:42things with people. And one of the most common
- 5:45modern red flags is that we we get caught up in that intense
- 5:52chemistry. But you have to understand that
- 5:54intense chemistry with no follow through is really just
- 5:58inconsistent communication that leaves you anxious is big talk,
- 6:04small effort, They don't follow through.
- 6:08Or it could be avoidance disguised as independence, which
- 6:13makes you feel like you're asking for too much when you
- 6:16really just seek and desire clarity.
- 6:19And here's a hard truth said gently.
- 6:23If someone requires constant interpretation, it usually isn't
- 6:30healthy. It's not because that means that
- 6:33there's a lack of clarity. Now I do also want to encourage
- 6:38you to ask if you're not asking for the clarity, that's a
- 6:41different versus asking for the clarity and continuing to get
- 6:46vague responses or they avoid or they pivot shift topic or
- 6:53sometimes they use gestures or even affection gifts to also
- 6:59throw you off. And this can, for some people,
- 7:04be a familiar pattern if you've experienced inconsistency
- 7:07earlier in your life, whether in prior romantic relationships,
- 7:12dating with your parents, within your friendships.
- 7:18And we'll talk more in Part 3 of this series about attachment in
- 7:23dating. And how about how that shows up
- 7:28and how, yeah. And impacts the way that we
- 7:32date. And sometimes we repeat patterns
- 7:35from prior seasons of our lives without recognizing that that's
- 7:38what we're doing. And so we can find ourselves
- 7:41reliving trauma. It's different players, but it's
- 7:45or different actors and actresses, but the same script.
- 7:49And it ends sort of in the same way.
- 7:52And you deserve someone where there's chemistry, where there's
- 7:56follow through, where there's consistency, where you feel
- 8:00calm, your nervous system is at ease, they talk big and the
- 8:05effort matches right. They or you want them to under
- 8:09promise and over deliver. If nothing else, you deserve to
- 8:16feel like what you're asking for isn't too much.
- 8:20That is just enough. And the person that's for you,
- 8:23they won't feel that way and just know that peace doesn't
- 8:28require decoding. OK, so now let's talk about our
- 8:33own flags. Yes, you, you got flags too.
- 8:36Even if you're not always the one carrying the obvious green
- 8:39flags, you have your own flags. Because maturity is realizing.
- 8:44I also bring patterns into relationships, right?
- 8:47So some self-awareness questions that'll help you.
- 8:50What do I excuse early that I resent later?
- 8:55So this is where you're going to go back and look through your
- 8:57own relationship data. You know what you live through
- 9:01and it's easy to make others the villain without just looking at
- 9:06the role that you play. They could have been a villain,
- 9:08but you could have also been a culprit in the situation and
- 9:13things that going the way that you like.
- 9:14So what do I excuse early that I resent later?
- 9:19Now this one is tough Y'all cause self abandonment in
- 9:24relationships is a real thing. So you have to ask where do I
- 9:28abandoned myself to keep connection?
- 9:33I know they're just here for somebody.
- 9:36So what does self abandonment look like?
- 9:39That's saying yes when you really mean no.
- 9:43That looks like 4 boundaries or a lack of boundaries.
- 9:46It looks like overextending in relationship.
- 9:50It looks like over performing to be loved, feeling like you have
- 9:55to earn love, that it has to be hard.
- 9:58It doesn't have to be hard. It does require commitment
- 10:02because love is a choice and love is an action.
- 10:06So don't confuse action with it having to be hard.
- 10:11OK. All right.
- 10:13The next self-awareness question, do I confuse intensity
- 10:18with intimacy? Now, that's the one, right?
- 10:21Because a lot of people feel like it just isn't hidden.
- 10:25You don't have that thing. And that's the chemistry that
- 10:28people are looking for. And chemistry alone is not
- 10:31sustainable. It's just not sustainable.
- 10:35I'm not saying don't look for chemistry.
- 10:37That's a very important thing, but you need intensity as well
- 10:43as intimacy. All right, this next one and I
- 10:47these are tough questions. I know.
- 10:49Do I stay longer than necessary hoping someone will change?
- 10:55Let that sink in. And I want to also be clear that
- 10:58this is not about self blame. This is just really taking stock
- 11:03of yourself, your own behaviors, doing your own personal
- 11:07inventory and relationships so that you get what you desire.
- 11:13Because sometimes there are some things that you are
- 11:16unconsciously in agreement with that leads to some of the
- 11:20outcomes that you experience in relationships.
- 11:23So this is about just being honest with yourself.
- 11:26And if you can't be honest with yourself, what does that look
- 11:30like in relationships, right? Like, are you going to be able
- 11:33to be honest with them and the relationship?
- 11:35It's so important that you can do this work first, right?
- 11:40Because remember, this is the runway.
- 11:42We're getting you ready for February.
- 11:45We're getting you ready for love.
- 11:48And finally, growth begins when we stop asking what did I do and
- 11:55why did they do this and start asking, why do I tolerate it?
- 12:03OK, so that's what I mean. When there's a part on the other
- 12:06side of it, they do a thing, and then you do a thing and your
- 12:10thing determines what happens next.
- 12:15You are in control of your own reaction.
- 12:18And if your reaction doesn't hold someone accountable when
- 12:23they crossed your boundaries, if you don't express it, there's
- 12:26not consequences. There's not acknowledgement of
- 12:30it. Well, you've essentially told
- 12:31them it's OK for you to treat me the way you treat me.
- 12:35You've told them that you are in agreement with this experience
- 12:39that you've had. And sometimes it's fear that
- 12:42keeps people from speaking. It fear all they're not going to
- 12:47like me, fear they'll stop talking to me.
- 12:50They'll get upset with me. So that in of its own says that
- 12:54you're trying to avoid your allowing toxic behavior to avoid
- 12:58further toxic behavior. So essentially you're signing up
- 13:04for a toxic relationship without even knowing it in the
- 13:07beginning. And if you've had so much of
- 13:11that intensity, that intense chemistry, oh man, you're
- 13:16essentially you like, you, like you like high on love hormones,
- 13:22right? Like you're wanting to preserve
- 13:26that oxytocin, all those endorphins, the dopamine hits
- 13:31that come with being in a new romantic situation.
- 13:37I forget what year they did the study, but there was a study
- 13:39that showed two brain scans, one of a person in love and the
- 13:45other of a person on drugs. The brains were lit up in the
- 13:50same places. There were slight differences,
- 13:56but you could see that there was definitely a correlation between
- 14:00the chemicals that are released in the body and what happens in
- 14:04the brain with a person in love and a person on drugs.
- 14:09And so if you found yourself tolerating behaviors that you,
- 14:13you know, you really don't want to, you're just looking for that
- 14:17next dopamine hit, that next oxytocin hit, that next VESA
- 14:22processing hit for the fellas, all of that.
- 14:26It's a thing, y'all. OK, so this is where you come
- 14:30in, right? So all throughout February, I'm
- 14:34going to be reading your dating and relationship letters on air
- 14:38and responding to them. You can write in, whether it's
- 14:41anonymous or named is completely your choice.
- 14:44I want you to send in letters about experiences you've had,
- 14:47about mixed signals, red flags you ignored, situation shifts,
- 14:53dating after heartbreak, trying to date differently, but feeling
- 14:58stuck. If you've ever said, I don't
- 15:01know if I'm overthinking or overlooking something, this is
- 15:06for you. I want you to write in.
- 15:08I want to hear about your experiences and I want to help
- 15:11you gain understanding to your patterns, your insight, and
- 15:15just, you know, see if we can move you forward to healthier
- 15:18relationships because February is for you.
- 15:22So see submission details and the show notes, but you can also
- 15:27send them to info at Evolve a Doctor, J nicole.com.
- 15:32You can send them to DMS on Instagram.
- 15:37So I want to hear from you and more than anything, I want to
- 15:40help you move closer to finding that love that you desire and
- 15:45deserve. So make sure you send those in
- 15:47as soon as possible. And as we close today, I just
- 15:49want to leave you with this. Discernment is such a very
- 15:53important part of dating. And discernment is not fear.
- 15:57Discernment is about self respect.
- 15:59It's about listening to your body, paying attention to what
- 16:04you're feeling, what you're experiencing.
- 16:05OK, clarity is not cold. Clarity is actually very kind.
- 16:11And most of all, the clarity is kind to you so that you can make
- 16:15an informed decision. And again, get the love that you
- 16:21deserve and you desire. So next episode, we're going to
- 16:25be talking about dating in the age of social media algorithms
- 16:30and where attention looks like it's winning over intention.
- 16:36But until then, I want you to remember you are allowed to
- 16:40choose peace, even if it costs you chemistry.
- 16:43You deserve peace and chemistry. Well, thank you for tuning in
- 16:48for another episode of Verizon Therapy.
