- 0:01Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I am your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:05And with me today from MOP V, Tony and Elizabeth Cortez.
- 0:09Welcome to the show, guys.
- 0:11Hi.
- 0:12Thank you.
- 0:13Well Thank you.
- 0:14You guys are right in the thick of two, two things that I care a whole lot about, music and
- 0:20veterans.
- 0:22And I'm just thrilled talking off camera with you about your organization.
- 0:26But before we get into all of the things that you're doing now, we wanna get to know you guys
- 0:31a little bit.
- 0:31So share a little bit of your story and, how Mont V came to be, and then we'll kind of pick
- 0:35it up from there.
- 0:37Sure.
- 0:37Sounds good.
- 0:38Mhmm.
- 0:39Well, Elizabeth and I are both army veterans.
- 0:42I joined before September 11, and she joined because of September 11.
- 0:46We met in Germany.
- 0:48And, we fell in love and got married, started a family.
- 0:51We went to Iraq together.
- 0:53And I guess it's a little out of order chronologically, but that's what we did.
- 0:57And then, when we started a family, you know, she got out of the army, and I stayed in and
- 1:02ended up retiring in '21.
- 1:05And, we retired in Maryland where where we got to kinda meet a lot of, a good group of
- 1:11veterans in our local area as well as a good group of musicians.
- 1:16And we were looking for ways to kinda deal with some of the, excuse me, to kinda deal with some
- 1:22of the, you know, problems or issues emotionally that could be caused by service
- 1:26that both of us experience and is not unique to us by any means.
- 1:30So, as Elizabeth played guitar since before I knew her, and, I was learning and really just
- 1:39to help my son practice.
- 1:40So I was learning before I knew it.
- 1:42I I I knew chords and was playing songs too.
- 1:44So we decided, you know, we needed something and music.
- 1:47When I pick up my guitar, I feel good.
- 1:50Right.
- 1:50People around me don't like it, but I like it.
- 1:52You know?
- 1:53And so we were at a dinner or lunch one time and just kinda spitballing some ideas, and we
- 1:58came up with this idea for Mont B, which is the music outreach program for veterans.
- 2:04And then as we said before, MontBeek is a play on words.
- 2:07So we had to wear these mock suits in Iraq.
- 2:09So there's mock four.
- 2:11It's for, chemical warfare.
- 2:14So we thought about that there is still a war going on even at home with veterans' minds with
- 2:22traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress disorder.
- 2:27And a lot of them struggled communicating their emotions.
- 2:30Like, sometimes it's hard for them to go to a vet center to talk to others, so we wanted to
- 2:34create a new way to be able to help veterans communicate through music, whether it's writing
- 2:40or playing an instrument.
- 2:42It could be the guitar, the piano, And so utilizing, you know so we called it Mock B,
- 2:48which is a protective cuttering for us out here since we're no longer in Iraq for our minds.
- 2:53It's kinda like shielding that and to be able to communicate through music.
- 2:57So that's how we came up with Mock b.
- 3:01First of all, thank you both for your service.
- 3:03We so appreciate you.
- 3:05As you can tell behind me, Operation Combating Veteran Suicide, our nonprofit partner with the
- 3:09scene projects.
- 3:10Veterans are very important to us, And a lot of these veterans, 22 a day, that are committing
- 3:17suicide are dealing with exactly the kinds of things that music can heal.
- 3:23It can give us purpose.
- 3:24It can allow us to express our feelings and all of these things inside of us that really have
- 3:29no other outlet besides music.
- 3:31I'm a musician myself.
- 3:33I've been playing you know, I picked up concert band playing drums in fifth grade and quickly,
- 3:39you know, found a guitar in eighth grade and started writing my own music immediately.
- 3:43So I know I know what songwriting has meant to me in my life.
- 3:47And in those darkest hours of my life, whether it was when I was experiencing homelessness or
- 3:52drug addiction or any of these things, which is all of those things are probably a reason I
- 3:57identify with veterans in that community so much, because I've lived through a lot of the
- 4:01same things.
- 4:02I I have never been to war, but, you know, I've been to prison, and prison is probably a lot
- 4:07like boot camp.
- 4:08Right?
- 4:09So there there's a connection there, for me, and, I just so appreciate the the idea that you
- 4:18had, but then also the wherewithal to continue to build this community around music for
- 4:26veterans.
- 4:27It's absolutely incredible.
- 4:29So all the kudos to you for for continuing to do that.
- 4:34I I know you mentioned Maryland before and kind of being in that Northeast corner of The United
- 4:39States, but you've recently moved now.
- 4:42You said Gulf Shores, Alabama.
- 4:44I'm assuming lots of military around there.
- 4:46I know the South is full of bases.
- 4:48And so, obviously, you're finding a veteran community down there.
- 4:52Are you working with some venues to to put on live music and different shows like that as
- 4:57well?
- 4:58Right.
- 4:58So we've been out here for about two and a half months, but I've I already gone out, and
- 5:03communicated with, the American Legion, Post ninety nine, and Gulf Shores, and they're
- 5:07wanting to have a meeting to start maybe doing an open mic over there.
- 5:11Alberta VFW in Alberta, Alabama, Alabama is about twenty minutes away.
- 5:17They're willing and wanting to work with us too and learn more about music outreach program for
- 5:22veterans.
- 5:23I communicate with local artists like Kat Rhodes and The Truth and Brian Morris, and her
- 5:30daughter was in the military and served two tours, and she's a big supporter of music
- 5:34outreach program for veterans as well.
- 5:36So, we're gonna get involved with the Arts Council, the Gulf Shores Arts Council, and, see
- 5:43if they they have grants and stuff.
- 5:44And, just like we were doing in Maryland, we were underneath the five zero one c three
- 5:48underneath the Cecil County Arts Council, and we're looking to get involved more with the
- 5:53community out here.
- 5:54So we are working with other organizations to reach out and set up a chapter here separate
- 6:02from the one in Maryland.
- 6:03So The one thing we learned the most is that these organizations that are veteran based that
- 6:09really love veterans, like the VFWs and the American Legions, are best asset, not just
- 6:15recruiting members, but even to showcase.
- 6:18You know?
- 6:19Right.
- 6:19Yep.
- 6:20And that's we've
- 6:21One of my first shows was at a VFW.
- 6:24So the the even our local I grew up in Deadwood, South Dakota.
- 6:28Our local VFW had a, we actually did a battle of the bands, and it was a fundraiser for our
- 6:33baseball team.
- 6:34So I know that around the world that these organizations and these buildings are sitting
- 6:40there, I would say, mostly underutilized at this point because the culture has kind of
- 6:45shifted away from those organizations a little bit.
- 6:48Now there are so many, you know, veteran, you know, veteran five zero one c threes out there.
- 6:55You have these big ones, wounded warrior projects and things like that that have kind of
- 6:59become behemoths in the charity world, but I don't necessarily know how many, you know,
- 7:05actual veteran lives that they're able to touch.
- 7:08And I think that's something that's been missing because the VFW is focused on a local
- 7:13community where veterans are actually able to get together and and to not just share war
- 7:18stories.
- 7:19That's not what it was about.
- 7:20It was about having a community of people that have known what you've been through.
- 7:25Like I said, I haven't been to war, but my my grandfather, on my mom's side was a Vietnam War
- 7:31veteran.
- 7:31My grandfather on my father's side was a Korean War veteran, several of my cousins.
- 7:37And, you know, I've had a lot of family that are in that veteran space.
- 7:42And especially what we found working with OCVS now is that there isn't as much of that inside
- 7:48of the communities as there once was.
- 7:51While there are plenty of resources online and out there in the world, it hasn't really ever
- 7:57it's shied away from physical communities and not just the cities and towns, the actual
- 8:03people that make up the community.
- 8:06Yeah.
- 8:07Absolutely.
- 8:08I think that's there's a lot of them that make up the community, and it goes back, and we
- 8:12still have Vietnam vets that are still struggling that really enjoy playing the
- 8:16guitar.
- 8:17And and you know that during that time, they didn't have as much support.
- 8:21So even getting the Vietnam veterans that are left involved with this program, and they're
- 8:26involved in the community too.
- 8:27The word spreads fast, and it helps them, and it will help others.
- 8:30And, hopefully, we can continue to grow our chapter grow MOPV throughout the nation and
- 8:37work with other nonprofit organizations like Guitarist for Heroes or any organization that
- 8:43supports the veterans.
- 8:44So we're here to balance each other out.
- 8:46We're our comrades.
- 8:47We're brothers and sisters in arms.
- 8:49We need to always empower and support one another.
- 8:51We're competition with with other charities like ours.
- 8:54We wanna wanna be support for each other because we have a common goal.
- 8:59Right.
- 9:00Well and it seems like so kind of the the function of of MOP V is really to be the
- 9:05connector, the one who can bring the veterans together the with you know, if it's a music
- 9:11teacher or it's a a venue to to set up and to bring people in for an open mic and play.
- 9:17You guys are kind of the main connector for all of these people that are otherwise just kind of
- 9:21floating out there on their own.
- 9:23Is that a pretty fair assessment?
- 9:25Yes.
- 9:25It is.
- 9:26You
- 9:26are a network, the the best kind of social network.
- 9:31How can people get involved with you guys?
- 9:36They can go to our, Facebook page and follow us, and it's, capital m o p and then dash
- 9:44capital v on Facebook.
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:46And invite us on there.
- 9:47Website is also on there.
- 9:49So you can just click over to our website.
- 9:51And then, also, there's a link to the Cecil County Arts Council.
- 9:54So so, because Music's an Art, we're able to work under their umbrella.
- 9:58We didn't have to wait for all of
- 9:59our
- 9:59paperwork to get working.
- 10:02So so we were able to get going while the paperwork was in process, and they've been a
- 10:06great partner for us with fundraising and all and we use their insurance, all kinds of stuff.
- 10:11So Give us they're able to stay, apply for grants for us as well.
- 10:14Yep.
- 10:15And we're we're gonna try to do that out here in Orange Bees too because the more help that
- 10:20we receive, the more veterans that we can help.
- 10:22Right.
- 10:22Because it is a nonprofit.
- 10:24So raising funds, we have t shirts that we some merchandise that we, you know, give away and
- 10:30sell.
- 10:31And it we just want people to we want our name to get across the nation and know that there is
- 10:39a way to communicate your emotions through music and playing and writing songs.
- 10:44So
- 10:44Well, I am thrilled that I can be some part of that promotional effort.
- 10:49I have a lot of other things on my mind right now because of the work that we have done and
- 10:54the network that we have.
- 10:56We'll talk a little bit more off camera as well about how we can help you to to amplify this
- 11:02beautiful signal that you guys are broadcasting out there.
- 11:05It's just so wonderful.
- 11:06It's so needed.
- 11:08I mean, obviously, you know, you see the the projects have a a close tie to our veterans,
- 11:14and the goal has always been to take this from local South Dakota out and throughout the
- 11:20world.
- 11:20Our founder is actually missus South Dakota International, so she has a pretty large
- 11:24platform of her own.
- 11:26And we're just looking forward to continuing to meet organizations like yours that align with
- 11:31not just our values, but align in actually getting out and helping veterans on the ground.
- 11:37We are very boots on the ground people here as well.
- 11:41So we're gonna connect with you on the Facebook page.
- 11:44We'll be sharing that out there and everything as well and helping you grow that community.
- 11:48Is there anything else you'd like to say before I let you go today?
- 11:52No.
- 11:53Just just as engineers always say, we say, which means let us try.
- 11:59So let us try and help and be supportive of other veterans.
- 12:03So engineers, SAONs.
- 12:07I love it.
- 12:08Well, guys, thank you so much for being part of the scene.
- 12:11Thank
- 12:11you.
- 12:12Thank you.
