- 0:00If you have ever felt that life is just too much, you can't handle that one
- 0:06little thing that went wrong, you're at your max and you can't take it anymore,
- 0:11then today's conversation is for you.
- 0:14Convivial Circle member Cara Leone has tells us exactly what she did to move from
- 0:21feeling overwhelmed at every little thing
- 0:24To not only handling her everyday life, but actually having increased
- 0:29capacity, so much so that her husband noticed and called her out on it.
- 0:34I can't wait to share this interview with you
- 0:37Speaker: welcome to the Christian homemaking podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 0:41I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker, homeschooling mom of five,
- 0:44grandma, and author of the book Home Is For Hospitality: Why
- 0:48Your Home And Homemaking Matter.
- 0:50Convivial means living together with joy, and that's the kind of home atmosphere
- 0:55that we want to create in our homes, and that's why I run Convivial Circle,
- 1:00a community helping women to excel at homemaking and do life cheerfully.
- 1:05And today, I'm joined by a member of Convivial Circle, Cara Leone.
- 1:10Cara has been married to her husband for 13 years.
- 1:13She's a homeschooling mom of four adventure-seeking
- 1:16children from 11 to 5 years old.
- 1:19She's a recovering perfectionist, saved by grace.
- 1:23Cara lives in the Sonoran Desert, where she enjoys hiking,
- 1:27warm winters, and hot coffee.
- 1:29So, thank you so much for joining me today, Cara.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32Thank you for having me.
- 1:34Speaker: I'm so excited to hear your story face to face when I've read a little bit
- 1:39about it, and I'm excited to chat today.
- 1:41Yeah, me too.
- 1:41So first, how did you find Convivial Circle, and what made you want to join?
- 1:47What was going on that made you think like, "Oh, yeah,
- 1:50I need something like this"?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53Um, well, I found the podcast, I think, through Scolé Sisters or,
- 1:59um, maybe the Literary Life podcast.
- 2:01You know, there was a little crossover.
- 2:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Um, yeah, so I found that about the spring of 2025 and just
- 2:08started listening to all of your podcasts that I could and implementing, you
- 2:14know, what I could kind of figure out.
- 2:16Um, and then we were on vacation one summer that, that summer in
- 2:20July, and I had the opportunity to go take a walk every day.
- 2:24I had some help with the kids, so I'd go take a walk, I'd listen
- 2:26to your podcasts, make a bunch of notes in my phone, and then when we
- 2:31got home from vacation, everything was going to change, and I wasâ¦
- 2:36you know, had all these ideas.
- 2:37It was- Was the plan ⦠it was gonna be great.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:40Yeah.
- 2:40Obviously, it did not all change at once.
- 2:42Um, and then really, really what happened, well, it was one sort
- 2:48of particularly difficult day.
- 2:51My husband talked to me at the end of the day, like, like, "What can we do?
- 2:54How can I help?
- 2:55You know, we gotta make s- make some changes here."
- 2:58And I told him, I'm like, "Well, I've been listening to this thing,
- 3:01and I could join, but I don't know if I should spend the money."
- 3:04And, um, I think it was the next morning he sent me a link.
- 3:08He's like, "Here you go," like, "Set up your profile and," "⦠you
- 3:12know, let's, let's do this."
- 3:14Um, yeah, so that's how I joined, but Iâ¦
- 3:18That first homemaking, I think it's Homemaking 101, and I was realizing
- 3:24everything I would tell myself, either in my head and often out loud,
- 3:28was, "I'm failing at everything.
- 3:31There's too much.
- 3:32It's all too much.
- 3:33Nothing is going right."
- 3:35Um, just everything is wrong.
- 3:37It's all too much.
- 3:38Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And I couldn't, I couldn't handle, like, the
- 3:42slightest, maybe the slightest hiccup or interruption in the day.
- 3:47I would be, you know, kind of annoyed if it was our week for,
- 3:51you know, to bring snack to soccer.
- 3:53It was like, "Oh, I gotta do this now.
- 3:55One more thing.
- 3:56How can Iâ¦"
- 3:57You know, and just little things like that that just, just put me over the
- 4:01edge into overwhelm, complaining.
- 4:04Um, yeah, I justâ¦
- 4:07That's just where I was, and I would have thought that I was organized.
- 4:11Um, you know, I look organized, but really what I had was one long running
- 4:18list where everything looked like it was the same level of importance.
- 4:24So planning our homeschool year would look the same as, "I need
- 4:28to clean the bathroom today."
- 4:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And it was just all one big- To do project.
- 4:34Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 4:35So any little thing added onto there just feels like anotherâ¦
- 4:38Could be as big as planning- Right ⦠the whole year.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 4:42Exactly.
- 4:44Yeah, the, the small thing, you know, the spills, the, the kid that cries, just-
- 4:50Speaker: The things
- 4:50Speaker 2: that- You know ⦠don't
- 4:51Speaker: make it on the list.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 4:53Exactly, and that just, yeah, I think I, I would always say
- 4:57that it's just, it's too much.
- 4:58It's all too much.
- 5:00Um, and I felt like I was failing at all of it.
- 5:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 2: So.
- 5:04Speaker: So what were some- Mm ⦠of the practices or ideas inside Convivial
- 5:07Circle that helped you the most?
- 5:10Speaker 2: There were so many.
- 5:12Um, the first one was telling myself true stories.
- 5:17So, like I said before, I was always telling myself I was a failure, there was
- 5:21too much to do, and, you know, I'veâ¦
- 5:24You hear all the time, the best lies have a little bit of truth in them.
- 5:28And so, I mean, there really is, you know, as moms and homeschoolers,
- 5:32there is too much to do.
- 5:34Um, but I would writeâ¦
- 5:37I wrote, well, I guess alignment cards kind of go with that, um, and
- 5:41I wrote that alignment card of, you know, "My grace is sufficient for you.
- 5:46My power is made perfect in weakness."
- 5:48So I was only telling myself half of that story.
- 5:52Speaker: Mm.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Um, whereas really getting that full, that full attitude change,
- 5:58that full, um, that full story in my head instead of the first, the first part.
- 6:03So that was a really big, um, attitude shift that I had.
- 6:08Um, that first brain dump I did was so eye-opening, and I, I was very
- 6:15resistant to brain dumps at first.
- 6:18You know, you don't wanna take the time, and, and they've just been so, so helpful,
- 6:22just to know what's really happening in my head, what's really going on.
- 6:26Um, and just made it very clear as to why I have, why I had a bad attitude,
- 6:31why, why I felt the way I felt, if that's what I was telling myself all the time.
- 6:37Um, yeah, I guess that, the alignment cards.
- 6:40I wrote down, one that I still use is, there's a George MacDonald
- 6:44poem, and the end of it goesâ¦
- 6:47I have it written down, I'm gonna read it.
- 6:49Um, it says, "O victorious one, give strength to rise.
- 6:54Go out and meet thee in the night."
- 6:57Speaker: Mm.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And that helps me all the time, your saying of smile and
- 7:01start, of maybe there's a lot of things that need to happen and I don't
- 7:08wanna do any of it, and I just get up and do the one thing and just- Yeah
- 7:13move forward and get that momentum.
- 7:16Um- Yeah, so those, those alignment cards, reading those and, and praying over them,
- 7:21even just for a minute, you know, in the middle of a homeschool day, just to
- 7:26change my focus and change my attitude.
- 7:29Um, yeah.
- 7:31Speaker: Yeah.
- 7:31I love to talk to women who were resistant to the brain dump ideas but then tried it
- 7:38and found it helpful, because that is the most common response I hear is, um, that
- 7:45resistance stage where I say like, "Try a brain dump," and they go s- "No way.
- 7:50That sounds terrible."
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker: So what was it, um, that's helpful aboutâ¦
- 7:57'Cause it does sound like, oh, you just want me to make my list bigger.
- 8:01Like, youâ¦
- 8:01I'm already overwhelmed, and if I brain dump, I'm just
- 8:04gonna end up more overwhelmed.
- 8:06That's how it feels before you've tried it.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 8:09Well, that first one I did, I think I criedâ¦
- 8:13I almost cried at the end of it, of, oh my goodness, like, this
- 8:17is what's going through my head.
- 8:19Um, but then you just see so much that doesn't matter-
- 8:22Speaker: Hmm
- 8:23⦠Speaker 2: or so much that-
- 8:25Or, or you think it's so much, and then you put it on paper
- 8:27and it's not that big of a deal.
- 8:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Um, but my head make it, made it, you know, either a big project
- 8:36or just something that seemedâ¦
- 8:39You know, I thought, "Oh, there's 100 things I have to do," and then I, I
- 8:42go down, I write it down, and it's like, here's five, five things, and
- 8:47they'll each take 10 minutes to do, and this isn't that big of a deal.
- 8:51Um, and then really, y- you know, I just see how I can make sense
- 8:56of What would be chaos inside of my head, you see it written down
- 9:01and you can do something about it.
- 9:03It gives you an action, um, a way forward- Mm-hmm ⦠I guess.
- 9:08Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 9:10Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:11Now, you told me that your husband noticed that things- Yeah ⦠were different.
- 9:17And so I love that you started off the story with like, your
- 9:19husband basically told you, "Join."
- 9:21You're like, "Do something."
- 9:22Right.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker: Join this thing, and then he noticed lateâ¦
- 9:26H- like, how much later was it where you had that conversation, and what was it
- 9:32that he was noticing that was different?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Well, one of the things he noticed right away, I would say within
- 9:37the first month, um, I had implemented a stop time at the end of my day.
- 9:44I forget which module you do it in, but I was very resistant to that.
- 9:49I was resistant to a lot.
- 9:51But I did it.
- 9:52Um, and I, instead of continuing my to-do list, I had the kitchen cleanâ¦
- 9:58You know, we did dinner, I had the kitchen cleaned up.
- 10:00That- that's the end, and I was able to go outside and go to the
- 10:04park with my husband and my kids.
- 10:06Speaker: Mm.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And he was like, "Oh, why?"
- 10:08Like, "Why are you here?"
- 10:09You know?
- 10:10Like, this isn't, this this isn't your time, you know?
- 10:13And, um, so I could just explain, you know, explain that.
- 10:16That was just one of the first, the first little wins I had of I could prioritize
- 10:23relationships over my to-do list, and say, "The real work is my family, my children."
- 10:30Um-
- 10:31Speaker: Mm-hmm
- 10:31⦠Speaker 2: and saying, "Here's when my day is done.
- 10:34I can spend this time with you," um, was-
- 10:37Speaker: Yeah, 'cause the
- 10:38Speaker 2: to-do list- ⦠that
- 10:38Speaker: first thing he- ⦠is never going to be all the way complete.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:42Right.
- 10:43And then, um, I guess it has been since I had done Convivial for about a
- 10:49year, and we were just talking and, um, we've always had, you know, the same
- 10:54goals and values and, you know, the life we wanna build with our family.
- 10:58Um, but he just said, he's like, "Yeah, this last year has been a lot different."
- 11:04He could see a change, and I think, I think he noticed that I had beenâ¦
- 11:09could change my priorities.
- 11:11Um, I found my, my identity instead of, instead of in how much can I cross off my
- 11:19list, is in, um, serving my family well.
- 11:25I have itâ¦
- 11:26Oh, I wrote it down here.
- 11:27Hang-
- 11:28In one of the modules I'veâ¦
- 11:30I can't, it was one of the organize your attitude ones, and I wrote, "Because
- 11:34I was made to glorify God and enjoy him forever, God has called me to
- 11:38serve my family and build his kingdom.
- 11:41And so every day I will ask God to help me trust him, work heartily
- 11:46for the Lord, and make my attitude one of cheerful obedience."
- 11:50Speaker: Mm.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And so I've seen, and I think my husband has seen, my
- 11:55attitude change, and then therefore my, um, my capacity has increased.
- 12:02I've been able to take on a lot more, not get so discouraged or overwhelmed
- 12:07by all the unexpected changes that just happen in family life.
- 12:14Um, I think he'd also say I'm a lot calmer.
- 12:18I'm more at peace, and I really found that with if I can rest in what
- 12:24Jesus has done and, and Jesus has, you know, he said, "It is finished."
- 12:30He's accomplished it.
- 12:31Keep striving and trying to finish, you know, reach a certain-
- 12:36end point.
- 12:38If he's done it, I can do my work knowing I'm, I'm glorifying God.
- 12:42Um, and that just brings a lot of peace even when the house is chaotic, and
- 12:47there's noise and, and all of that.
- 12:49Speaker: Yes.
- 12:50Yes.
- 12:51And that, it's like working from rest.
- 12:55It's like, it's not- Right ⦠just like, "Oh, that means that I can
- 12:58take it easy and not do anything."
- 13:00It actually increases your capacity because- Yeah ⦠you're
- 13:03not working to earn something or to- Mm-hmm ⦠prove something.
- 13:07Um- Mm-hmm ⦠it's a different, different perspective.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:11And because of that, we've been able toâ¦
- 13:13I have four kids in sports right now, which is a lot.
- 13:17You know, it's a lot of practices, and, and games, and schedules to figure out.
- 13:22Um, had to adjust my daily schedule.
- 13:25You know, we do dinner a little bit earlier.
- 13:28It's just a lot of, a lot of shuffling going on, and I don't think
- 13:32I could have handled that before.
- 13:35But now, um, well, with a working planner actually, Um, and just that
- 13:41increased capacity and attitude, I can, I can take that on, um,
- 13:46without turning into the mean mom.
- 13:48Speaker: So if you were talking to another woman who was feeling overwhelmed
- 13:53right now with everything that's going on at home and things not going
- 13:56as planned what would be the first thing you would recommend that she do?
- 14:02Speaker 2: The 10-minute timers are- Yeah ⦠that's my new favorite- ⦠thing.
- 14:07Speaker: Yes.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Um, I put that, I put that to a test a long time ago.
- 14:12Like, there's no way.
- 14:1310 minutes, that's, you know, that's wishful thinking.
- 14:17There's no way.
- 14:18And my, I think my first win with that was, um, we were, we were going somewhere,
- 14:24me and the kids had to go somewhere.
- 14:26We were all ready, you know, everything was packed, and we had 10 minutes
- 14:30until we had to leave the house.
- 14:32And so we have a lot of s- um, sliding doors in our house,
- 14:37and I knew they needed to beâ¦
- 14:38the tracks needed to get vacuumed out and wiped, and seems like a really big job.
- 14:43I was like, "Well, I'm gonna try it.
- 14:44Let's see."
- 14:45And I got that whole job done in 10 minutes, and we left the house on time.
- 14:50And it's like, okay, that wasn't actually that big of a deal.
- 14:53And then I did, um, the baby step bingo- Mm-hmm ⦠where I think those
- 14:58are even often less than 10 minutes.
- 15:01Um, and you just get that momentum of, you know, things maybe you see a list or it,
- 15:07it feels like a lot, and it's like, oh, I can clean one shelf in the closet or wipe
- 15:13out one drawer and just work on something 10 minutes at a time, get some momentum.
- 15:19You feel so much better, and the
- 15:23progress really does build.
- 15:25Um, yeah, it takes, you know, it takes a little bit of time to see,
- 15:29but now I'm like, oh, I can, I can do anything in 10 minutes, you know?
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:34So yeah, that would definitely be my, my first advice.
- 15:38Speaker: Yes.
- 15:39Yeah, it's just that shift from being able to quickly start and just say,
- 15:44"Oh, I could do that," instead of that default, like, "Oh, that's a big deal.
- 15:49I'll never have time for that."
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:51It just, like, it switch- switches that script in our heads.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:56Right.
- 15:57Speaker: Well, thank you so much, Kara, for joining me today.
- 16:00It was so fun to talk to you.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:02Yep.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:03Thank you for having me on.
