Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And today we have the last of
- 0:19our kind of out-of-the-box episodes.
- 0:22And I really enjoyed yesterday's episode walking through Psalm
- 0:26151, so-called. And today we have one other 2000
- 0:33year old prayer that someone wrote while reflecting on the
- 0:38story of Manasseh from the Old Testament.
- 0:42Now I know that you know all about Manasseh and you have
- 0:47spent a lot of time studying his life and his reign and his
- 0:50accomplishments and his sins. I I say that somewhat tongue in
- 0:54cheek. Manasseh tends to be one of
- 0:57those characters in Scripture that gets tucked away within,
- 1:02you know, Second Kings and Second Chronicles.
- 1:05And a lot of Christians don't spend much time there in
- 1:09Scripture. And so they, you very well might
- 1:12not have heard about Manasseh other than if you've been doing
- 1:16a perhaps, you know, Bible in a year reading or something like
- 1:19that, that you may have come across the story of Manasseh
- 1:22from time to time. Now Manasseh was the king of the
- 1:28southern Kingdom of Judah. So there was the United Kingdom
- 1:33first under Saul, David, and Solomon.
- 1:35And then after Solomon, there was the breakup of the children
- 1:41of Israel into the northern Kingdom of Israel with their
- 1:45capital city called Samaria, and then the southern Kingdom of
- 1:48Judah that had its capital city as Jerusalem.
- 1:52And there were a few good kings in the southern Kingdom of
- 1:56Judah. There were no good kings that
- 1:58followed the Lord in the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 2:01And the vast majority of the kings in the southern Kingdom of
- 2:04Judah were wicked and evil for a variety of of reasons.
- 2:09Manasseh is one of the ones that scripture tells us was deeply
- 2:14unrighteous and that because of how evil he was in proliferating
- 2:20idolatry and sin causing these people who were supposed to be
- 2:25the people of God. You can think even of their
- 2:29kingdoms name. The Kingdom of Judah, which is
- 2:32to praise Yahweh is one way that you could navigate through that.
- 2:38Now I will praise Yahweh is what Judah's mother Leia said as she
- 2:44gave birth to him. That was kind of the name that
- 2:46she gave to her son. And so the Kingdom of Judah
- 2:49should have been for the praise of God, but it was not.
- 2:53And that was led in its idolatry by Manasseh.
- 2:58Manasseh had a long reign and he had a an incredibly evil reign.
- 3:05And as a result of his wickedness, God had Babylon come
- 3:10in. And they actually deposed
- 3:13Manasseh. They put some of his sons to
- 3:16death in front of him, and they took him and imprisoned him in
- 3:21Babylon. And so Scripture says that
- 3:25Manasseh, this wicked, idolatrous, evil, godless king,
- 3:31as he was there in prison in Babylon, he turned back to God
- 3:37and he prayed and God restored him not to the Kingdom, but he
- 3:43actually had him be in the king of Babylon's court.
- 3:47And it's just a really kind of short mention in, I forget if
- 3:53it's the second King's passage or the second Chronicles passage
- 3:56that highlights Manassas like being brought back out of
- 4:02prison, but it's just a short little blip of a story.
- 4:06But what a thought that someone that their whole life has been
- 4:09devoted to evil and wrongdoing in the sight of God and against
- 4:14God's people, that when they turn and when they repent and
- 4:18turn back to God, they can find God's like mercy and his grace.
- 4:23This would have been a very unpopular view back when the
- 4:29books of scripture were being penned, because when you had
- 4:32someone that was evil, when you had an idolater, well, we read
- 4:36together in Leviticus that one who participates in idolatry,
- 4:40that's a thing that is worthy of death according to the law, the
- 4:45Torah of God. So this is a person that
- 4:48genuinely deserved death, but God forgave and God showed
- 4:53kindness and grace to this person.
- 4:56And so as people thought about what is just and what is right
- 4:59and what is good and what is holy, the story of Manasseh
- 5:04tells us that God can work and intervene in broken, awful
- 5:09people to be able to bring out someone new.
- 5:14Someone that is, if you will, much closer to the image of God
- 5:19that he created us to be. So in the time between when the
- 5:25Old Testament was completed and when the New Testament started,
- 5:29the people of God were thinking all the time about what the Old
- 5:34Testament said. And one of the things that a
- 5:37particular writer at one point during that BC 400, sorry, 400
- 5:45BC to maybe 200 BC, one of the things that a writer during that
- 5:51time period thought was I wonder what Manasseh prayed, because in
- 5:56Second Kings and Second Chronicles, it doesn't give us
- 5:59the content of that prayer. And so about 24120, yeah, about
- 6:052200 to 2400 years ago, a believer in God wrote a prayer
- 6:12that he said this could have been what Manasseh prayed.
- 6:15This is his story. And so working off of what
- 6:19Manasseh would know, here's what I think he might have prayed to
- 6:22the Lord. I think this is a beautiful
- 6:25prayer and I was so encouraged through reading it even just a
- 6:30few moments ago. And so I want to encourage you
- 6:34to listen along as we read through this 22124 hundred year
- 6:40old prayer. I, I think it'll be incredible.
- 6:45Verse #1 Lord Almighty God of our ancestors, God of Abraham,
- 6:51Isaac, Jacob, and their righteous children.
- 6:55You made heaven and earth with all their beauty.
- 6:57You set limits for the sea by speaking your command.
- 7:01You closed the bottomless pit and sealed it by your powerful
- 7:05and glorious name. All things fear you and tremble
- 7:09in Your presence, because no one can endure the brightness of
- 7:13your glory. No one can resist the fury of
- 7:16Your threat against sinners, but Your promised mercies are beyond
- 7:22measure and imagination. Because You are the highest
- 7:26Lord, kind, patient, and merciful, and you feel sorry
- 7:31over human troubles. You, Lord, according to Your
- 7:35gentle grace, promised forgiveness to those who are
- 7:38sorry for their sins. In Your great mercy, You allowed
- 7:42sinners to turn from their sins and find salvation.
- 7:47Therefore, Lord God, of those who do what is right, You didn't
- 7:51offer Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who didn't sin against You a
- 7:55chance to change their heart and lives.
- 7:58But you'll offer me, the Sinner, the chance to change my heart
- 8:03and life because my sins outnumbered the grains of sand
- 8:07by the sea. My sins are many, Lord, they are
- 8:11many. I'm not worthy to look up, to
- 8:13gaze into heaven because of my many sins.
- 8:17Now, Lord, I suffer justly. I deserve the troubles I
- 8:21encounter already. I'm caught in a trap.
- 8:24I'm held down by iron chains so that I can't lift up my head
- 8:28because of my sins. There's no relief for me because
- 8:32I made you angry, doing wrong in front of your face, setting up
- 8:37false gods and committing offenses.
- 8:41Now I bow down before you from deep within my heart, begging
- 8:45for your kindness. I have sinned, Lord.
- 8:48I have sinned and I know the laws I've broken.
- 8:52I'm praying, begging you forgive me, Lord, forgive me.
- 8:58Don't destroy me along with my sins.
- 9:00Don't keep my bad deeds in your memory forever.
- 9:04Don't sentence me to the earth's depths, for you, Lord, are the
- 9:08God of those who turn from their sins.
- 9:11In me You'll show how kind you are.
- 9:14Although I'm not worthy, you'll save me according to your great
- 9:19mercy. I will praise You continuously
- 9:22all the days of my life because all of heaven's forces praise
- 9:27you, and the glory is yours forever and always.
- 9:32Amen. Man, I tell you guys, I just
- 9:36love this little prayer. Now, as I mentioned both
- 9:40yesterday and I think I might have mentioned it just a moment
- 9:43ago, this prayer is not, if you will, it's not inspired by the
- 9:49Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit did not move the
- 9:53pen of the author as he was writing this.
- 9:56I say that colloquially in the writing of Scripture, there is
- 10:02human agency. The Holy Spirit did not, you
- 10:06know, dictate in the words of Paul or John exactly what they
- 10:10needed to be saying. He, he moved, if you will, in
- 10:13their hearts so that what they wrote from their being and in
- 10:17their heart what they wrote was exactly what God wanted to have
- 10:22written with even the vocabulary and grammar that God wanted it
- 10:27to be written in. That was not the process for
- 10:32what we looked at yesterday. That song titled Psalm 151 or
- 10:36this prayer, the prayer of Manasseh.
- 10:39However, as we read A2220400 year old prayer from a believer
- 10:46in God, I I just can't help but worship the Lord for His
- 10:53goodness as we read through this portion.
- 10:57So I do want to highlight one thing that would highlight this
- 11:03particular portion of scripture as not being inspired that this
- 11:07is not, if you will, the Word of God.
- 11:11Though certainly we can hear God's voice and some of it as it
- 11:14echoes Scripture in line #8 or verse #8 if you will, He says.
- 11:20Therefore, Lord God of those who do what is right, You didn't
- 11:24offer Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who didn't sin against you a
- 11:28chance to change their heart and lives, but you offer me, the
- 11:31Sinner, the chance to change my heart and life.
- 11:34Want to highlight here Abraham, Isaac and Jacob absolutely sin
- 11:38and they sinned over and over again.
- 11:41I've been preaching through the book of Genesis in 2024-2025 and
- 11:47we will complete it this year in 2026.
- 11:50So I have gone over at length the sins of Abraham, Isaac and
- 11:55Jacob. So here is this person as they
- 11:57write, they're saying in comparison with the sins of
- 12:00Manasseh, that at no point do we read that God punishes Abraham,
- 12:05Isaac, and Jacob in the way that he punishes Manasseh, or that
- 12:09Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, they didn't commit idolatry like
- 12:13Manasseh was committing idolatry.
- 12:15They had lies of sin. They had lies or sorry, they had
- 12:20the sin of lies that each of them committed over and over and
- 12:25over again, taking advantage of other people in a in a variety
- 12:33of circumstances. So Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
- 12:36while yes, they were great examples of faith in God, they
- 12:41were not sinless and they did in fact sin against God.
- 12:45And so here I wanted to highlight that that's the one
- 12:47part of this prayer that I'm like, listen, I know what you're
- 12:51trying to communicate, but here God the Lord, who is the God of
- 12:57those who do what is right. There is none righteous.
- 13:01No, not one as we would read in Romans chapter 3 or as David
- 13:05says, there's none that understands.
- 13:07There was no one that seeks after God.
- 13:09They have all gone out of the way.
- 13:10They have all together become unprofitable.
- 13:13So God is the only good and perfect one.
- 13:16We are not the good and perfect. So I want to look first at this
- 13:20little section in lines one through 5 or verses one through
- 13:235, if you will. Very quick side note as well, if
- 13:27you are interested at any point in reading through some more of
- 13:31these, they're not scripture, but the intertestamental books,
- 13:35I want to encourage you, you can look up the Common English
- 13:38Bible, the CEB, the Common English Bible, and it has some
- 13:42great very readable translations of these ancient Greek and
- 13:49Hebrew texts and so, and actually some Syriac as well.
- 13:54So I want to encourage you if you want to read more of those
- 13:56things, just like you would read, you know, a book by John
- 13:59MacArthur or by Rick Warren or someone else.
- 14:03This is these are great insights into what believers were
- 14:07thinking couple thousand years ago.
- 14:09So want to look first at the section in one through 5.
- 14:13Lord Almighty God of our ancestors, He says, God, you are
- 14:17the God who has been with my family for generations back and
- 14:23God, you are incredible. You meet heaven and earth with
- 14:26all of their beauty. You do amazing, wonderful
- 14:29things, He says. You set limits for the sea by
- 14:32speaking your command, like you keep us safe from being
- 14:35overwhelmed, if you will, by the chaos waters, by the flood,
- 14:39because you set where the sea stops.
- 14:42He says you closed the bottomless pit.
- 14:44That's the depths that we would read even in Genesis 1, or what
- 14:49we read in Revelation that God throws Satan into is that the
- 14:53bottomless pit is opened and Satan is chucked into it, and so
- 14:58God is incredible and powerful. Verse 4.
- 15:02All things fear you and tremble in your presence because no one
- 15:06can endure the brightness of your glory.
- 15:08No one can resist the fury of your threat against sinners.
- 15:12Think about the flood or think about Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 15:15Think about the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC that all of
- 15:20these things show us that what God wants to get accomplished
- 15:24will be accomplished. And so we ought to live in fear
- 15:28and awe, reverence and respect of our God.
- 15:33But this fearful, amazing, wonderful God in verse number
- 15:37six, he says, but your promised mercies are beyond measure and
- 15:42imagination. I I so this encourages my soul
- 15:47in an incredible way that yes, my God is the just God, but he
- 15:52is the God who delights in showing mercy.
- 15:56Verse 7, he just goes on and on with the description, you are
- 15:59the highest Lord, kind, patient and merciful and you feel sorry
- 16:04over human troubles that God's not disinterested in the pain
- 16:09that you or I go through. Instead, he deals patiently with
- 16:13us. He doesn't treat us like our
- 16:15sins deserve. Instead he treats us as his own
- 16:18children. He's merciful.
- 16:20He gives grace to us. He doesn't punish us when he
- 16:23could. He doesn't punish us right when
- 16:27we would deserve it. Sometimes He gives us a space of
- 16:31grace to be able to repent. He is kind to as He continually
- 16:36does good things to us even when we have not earned it.
- 16:40And he he feels sorrow over the things that we interact with.
- 16:43What a good God that that is. Verse #7 You, Lord, according to
- 16:48your gentle grace, promised forgiveness to those who are
- 16:53sorry for their sins. In your great mercy, you allowed
- 16:56sinners to turn from their sins and find salvation.
- 17:00This is the picture of repentance that I I'm no longer
- 17:03going to pursue idolatry. I'm no longer going to pursue
- 17:06sexual immorality. I'm no longer going to pursue
- 17:10covetousness or greed as the driving motivation of my life.
- 17:15Instead, I'm turning from these sins and I'm going to say, God,
- 17:18I need your mercy. I need your forgiveness.
- 17:20I need you to change who I am because I am broken.
- 17:25And so he says, Lord, you have offered me the Sinner, the
- 17:29chance to change my heart and my life.
- 17:32He says because my sins outnumbered the grains of sand
- 17:36by the sea, as you read through the story of Manasseh, you would
- 17:40go, yeah, this person has no shot of ever, if you will,
- 17:44getting into heaven, as we would often phrase it.
- 17:46They have no shot of a relationship with God as a
- 17:51result of their brokenness. He says, my sins are many, Lord,
- 17:54they are many. I'm not worthy to look up to
- 17:57gaze into heaven because of my many sins.
- 18:01And I don't know if you've ever been there in your life or you
- 18:03feel like you have let God down at far too often, my friend,
- 18:08there is still grace and forgiveness and mercy reserved
- 18:11for you. He says now Lord, I, I suffer
- 18:14justly. I deserve the troubles I
- 18:15encounter already. I'm caught in a trap.
- 18:18I'm held down by iron chains so that I can't lift up my head
- 18:22because of my sins. There's no relief for me because
- 18:24I made you angry, doing wrong in front of your face, setting up
- 18:29false gods and committing offenses.
- 18:33Here, as the writers writing from the perspective of Manasseh
- 18:38imprisoned in Babylon, you could think about the literal chains
- 18:43that would be on him. And he'd go, Yep, I earned all
- 18:45of this because I snubbed my nose at God and I knew that God
- 18:51existed and I knew what God's commands were, and I ignored him
- 18:55and I did whatever I wanted to do instead.
- 18:57Can I encourage you don't believe that your sins will go
- 19:03unpunished. Don't believe that there will
- 19:05not be consequences for the wrongs that you and I have done.
- 19:10And that consequence doesn't have to be eternal condemnation.
- 19:15Instead, as we read in Hebrews, I forget if it's 12 or 13, I
- 19:18think it's chapter 12, that God disciplines, He chastens, He
- 19:23corrects those who are his children.
- 19:26And so even in our Christian life, though, we never have to
- 19:31fear. Hell, we can absolutely fear.
- 19:34All right. If I, you know, make my life
- 19:37stealing stuff, I can expect at some point I'm going to walk
- 19:41into a house or I'm going to break into a house, that someone
- 19:44is actually inside the house and they might harm me as a result
- 19:49of my thievery. You know, I'm engaged in this
- 19:53wrong relationship. And that person's spouse or
- 19:57someone else might find out about this or my spouse might
- 20:00find out about this and you know, my life will be destroyed.
- 20:04Or if I rob a bank, you know I'm going to prison.
- 20:09Our sin has natural consequences.
- 20:13So do not snub your nose at God and go, no, I'm just going to do
- 20:16whatever I want to do and you can deal with it.
- 20:20Let's recognize that whatever we do, we do in front of the face
- 20:25of God, and he is a holy and a just God, and so we ought to
- 20:29obey him, not flagrantly sin in front of Him.
- 20:33Verses 11 through 13. Now I bow down before you from
- 20:36deep within my heart, begging for your kindness.
- 20:41I've sinned, Lord, I've sinned and I know the laws I've broken.
- 20:46I'm praying, begging you forgive me, Lord, forgive me.
- 20:51I love this, these verses, if you will.
- 20:54If there's any kind of ancient version of the sinner's prayer,
- 20:58I feel like this is it of God. I know that I'm a Sinner.
- 21:02I believe that because of your kindness and your goodness, you
- 21:06will forgive me because of Christ Jesus.
- 21:09Would you forgive me of my sins? And if there's never been a time
- 21:14in your life where you have, you know, prayed.
- 21:16You don't have to pray these exact words or anything, but if
- 21:19there's never been a time when you have responded to the Lord
- 21:22in faith to say God, I recognize I'm a Sinner.
- 21:25I'm in need of a Savior. Just as God heard the prayer of
- 21:29Manasseh, God will hear your prayer today and he will save
- 21:33you that you will not have to worry about what will happen in
- 21:35your eternity, which is then what this prayer goes on with.
- 21:39He says don't destroy me along with my sins.
- 21:41Don't keep my bad deeds in your memory forever.
- 21:44Don't sentence me to the earth's depths, for you, Lord, are the
- 21:49God of those who return from their sins.
- 21:52And that I love verses 14 and 15.
- 21:54They're so good in me. You'll show how kind you are.
- 21:59Although I'm not worthy, you'll save me according to your great
- 22:03mercy. I'll praise you continuously all
- 22:06the days of my life, because all of heaven's forces praise you,
- 22:10and the glory is yours forever and always.
- 22:14Amen. I love the lining here in me.
- 22:18You'll show how kind you are, that when people look at Brian's
- 22:23life that they'll go, man, God is good.
- 22:26I can tell because Brian experiences joy or peace or love
- 22:31that he doesn't deserve in and of himself.
- 22:34But God has done something good to him.
- 22:36God has given him some amazing friends.
- 22:39God has given him a wonderful church family.
- 22:42And I know it's not because Brian's earned it.
- 22:44It's because God is kind to him. He says, although I'm not
- 22:49worthy, you'll save me according to your great mercy.
- 22:52This is the gospel message that because of the mercy of Christ
- 22:56Jesus, because of his kindness expressed to us on the cross and
- 23:01in the resurrection and in the gifting of the Holy Spirit, that
- 23:04God saves us because of His great mercy.
- 23:07So what's our response to this? We praise God, we don't love
- 23:10sin. We turn away from sin.
- 23:13We operate in awe and worship and reverence of God.
- 23:17We seek the Lord to heal what is broken in US and how we break
- 23:23others through sin. And we come back to the
- 23:28recognition God, we are the broken, you are the whole, we
- 23:32are the imperfect. You are the perfect and
- 23:35righteous. And so if I'm going to exist, if
- 23:38I'm going to have a relationship with you, if I'm going to, if
- 23:41you will make the most of my life, it has to come through
- 23:45God, His kindness, His mercy, His goodness, His compassion on
- 23:50me. I hope that this little prayer
- 23:54has been an encouragement to you today.
- 23:57Like I mentioned last episode, Monday we are heading into First
- 24:01Timothy, the letter from Paul to his young protege, and I believe
- 24:07that that'll be a wonderful time in the word together.
- 24:09Thank you for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
