- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:29coop. So the question for you today
- 0:31is, does your story equal your identity?
- 0:35So I want you to pause and think about this for a second.
- 0:37Does your story about your life, who you are, does that equal
- 0:41your identity? Is that who you are or is it
- 0:43just your story? And it's important distinction
- 0:47from the standpoint of coaching and where I spend all day, every
- 0:51day talking to people. Your story is intrinsically tied
- 0:56to you one way or another. But if your story equals your
- 0:59identity, basically you're screwed because it while it can
- 1:03shape you, it should not be your identity.
- 1:06When it is, you're in trouble. So you have to stop right now
- 1:10and ask yourself, OK, let me check in with this.
- 1:13Is this something that I'm doing to myself?
- 1:16Because we all have a tendency to do this and we let our story
- 1:20define us instead of us deciding what we're going to take from
- 1:24that story and utilize. It's a very fine line of
- 1:28distinction, but it's worth exploring.
- 1:30Because once you start making that happen, once you start
- 1:33looking at that and you start digging into it, you get extreme
- 1:37clarity about what parts of your story you're going to allow to
- 1:42be told in a way that can be useful.
- 1:45Obviously you could tell your whole story and have it be
- 1:47useful, but it doesn't define who you are as a person.
- 1:51You define who you are as a person.
- 1:53You decide how it shapes you. You decide what happens with it.
- 1:57Some people, and we've talked about this before, can have two
- 2:01two experiences very similar. Two people can have two very
- 2:04similar experiences. People go to war and they come
- 2:07back and one is a complete mess and the other one turns out to
- 2:11be this amazing, giving, loving person.
- 2:16What's the difference? One, the experience, their
- 2:19story, define them. The other one, they never let
- 2:22that happen. They just said Nope, this is who
- 2:24I'm going to choose to be. They could take lessons from it.
- 2:26They could have it shape them. They could use that sand, that
- 2:30grit. Like what happens when you put a
- 2:32stone into a machine that buffs it and smooths it.
- 2:36You can that that grit ends up shaping that stone into
- 2:39something smooth and wonderful or you know it it you can have
- 2:43it so turned on so high it destroys it.
- 2:46It's a question of what you are going to allow to have happen.
- 2:50And without the distinctions it's very hard to know.
- 2:53So when you go back and you start thinking about your story
- 2:56and you start thinking about, OK, I need to make sure that I'm
- 3:01aware of what parts of my story I'm utilizing in a positive way
- 3:05or to my greater good, or what part of my story has become my
- 3:09identity. So a way I love to have people
- 3:12do this is to sit down and actually ask them.
- 3:15Identify yourself. Really write down what is your
- 3:17identity? Who are you?
- 3:19Sit there and and struggle with it because it is a hard thing to
- 3:23sit and write down. But when you start the process
- 3:26and you actually start looking at it, you're going to be amazed
- 3:29at how much you come up with because you are a myriad of
- 3:35items, of thoughts, of emotions, of feelings.
- 3:39It it, it is so memories, it is so complex and so intrinsically
- 3:44tied together. Unless you start to look at it
- 3:47all, you can't get clear on it. You have to just say some of
- 3:51this just shows up and you're like, wow, I didn't even know
- 3:54that was something that I was doing.
- 3:55I didn't even recognize that as part of myself.
- 3:58And then when you start digging, you can say, OK, that happened
- 4:01to me, but I'm not going to let it define me.
- 4:04That's what we're looking for. That's the kind of thing we are
- 4:07looking for at this point. So pen to paper helps.
- 4:13Recording obviously always helps.
- 4:15You know, I'm a big fan of that. I talk about that all the time.
- 4:18You can go back and watch it. You can hear how you say things.
- 4:21Sitting and talking to yourself on camera or going back and
- 4:25listening to it on audio is super useful because you can
- 4:29hear how you talk about it. You can hear the emotion in your
- 4:32voice. It's a huge tool that I use when
- 4:35I'm working with clients. I I take that the the way that
- 4:40they you know that they say something and that that
- 4:43interpretation of it and I can really feel it in that moment.
- 4:47So you could do the same thing with yourself.
- 4:49You can hear well how do I describe this?
- 4:51So if I was to use myself as an example, I would say, you know,
- 4:54I had things in my life that happened to me.
- 4:57Losing my dad very young was a big thing for me.
- 5:01And if I talk about it now, I can talk about it.
- 5:05And if I am telling the story from the standpoint of it's a
- 5:10story and it's not defining me, I can give you the facts.
- 5:14And I don't necessarily fall to pieces.
- 5:17But when I let it define me, when I let it, when I step into
- 5:21a different part of it and I start to go back into it, all of
- 5:25a sudden I'm in tears. So for me, tears seems to be a
- 5:29good indication of am I in that story where it's defining me, or
- 5:34am I just saying the facts? And so, yes, it's a part of what
- 5:38happened to me. But what was a bigger part of
- 5:41what happened to me? That was how he raised me, how
- 5:44he brought me up, how he gave me the good stuff from him.
- 5:47And that's the part I want to focus on.
- 5:49That's the part I want to be part of my identity.
- 5:52So that's just one trick for me. Now, some people say, oh, the
- 5:55tears aren't that way for me. And that may be very true
- 5:58because we're all different. So you have to dig in.
- 6:00You have to look, You have to see.
- 6:02Let's see what you come up with. All right, my friends.
- 6:04Happy hunting. I'll see you tomorrow.
- 6:06Bye.
