- 0:22to the. Coop and let's start your day
- 0:24off in a fantastic way. Hey everybody, good morning.
- 0:30So let's talk about how we pick people that we listen to and
- 0:34take advice from. This is a very interesting
- 0:38subject to me, always has been based on the fact that obviously
- 0:41I coach. So a lot of people come and talk
- 0:44to me and want to know, OK, what should I do?
- 0:48And let me be the first one to say I do not say what you should
- 0:52do. I never tell my clients what
- 0:54they should do. I give them ideas and they can
- 0:57choose. That's why I refer to myself as
- 1:00a creative strategist as well as an executive mindset coach.
- 1:03I can tell them what will change their mindset and they can pick
- 1:06and choose working on that. And I tell them, well, here are
- 1:10some possibilities, here are some pathways and lay it out in
- 1:13front of everybody so that they can choose which one feels right
- 1:16for them because ultimately we are all responsible for
- 1:19ourselves. But here's the tricky part.
- 1:21When we start looking for people to talk to, often it's it's in
- 1:27our, in our inner circle, Like we just look at what's what is
- 1:30around us in proximity and we'll start asking other people and
- 1:35we'll say, Hey, do you know anybody that dot dot, dot, dot
- 1:37dot? And it while that's can be a
- 1:41good thing, the challenge we have is how are we delineating
- 1:46if in fact we should take that person's advice, not the one
- 1:50that's giving it to us, but the one they're sending us to.
- 1:52How do we know that person is of quality?
- 1:54How do we know what's there? And I've heard it said that, you
- 1:58know, oh, well, you can see the success that person has had.
- 2:02But having been working in the speaker industry for a very long
- 2:06time, I've seen speakers come and go, and I've seen them have
- 2:09great, you know, stature of wealth.
- 2:12And behind the scenes, they're a nightmare.
- 2:14I've seen people who you think look so together on stage and
- 2:17then they come off and they're totally not together.
- 2:21And that has always made me leery of how do you sort?
- 2:25How do you see? Because it depends on what
- 2:28you're measuring, how you want to pick somebody.
- 2:30So for instance, if you want someone to give you advice in
- 2:35business and they never talk about their failures, I struggle
- 2:39with that personally. Like I want to know where
- 2:42somebody failed. I want to see what happened with
- 2:45that failure. My father used to talk about
- 2:47that all the time. He had multiple businesses and
- 2:51he was very successful with car washes and he was, he opened a
- 2:56shoe store, rather random, right?
- 2:58This is when I was in high school and opened a shoe store
- 3:02and really had the intent of wanting my mother to take that
- 3:05business on. Well, my mother did not want to
- 3:08take that business on. Talk about misaligned goals.
- 3:11She had no intention of it. So we ran it for a few years and
- 3:15then we closed it because it just didn't make any sense.
- 3:18And he would talk about that. He would say those things to me
- 3:21and be like, I didn't anticipate what she thought of this.
- 3:25I didn't anticipate that she wouldn't be interested in
- 3:28leaving the job she had. But because she was so certainty
- 3:31driven, she didn't want to leave where she was working, which
- 3:34happened to be Texas Instruments.
- 3:36And he wanted to get her out of that environment, put her in
- 3:39something where she could be an entrepreneur like he, him and
- 3:42his whole family had always been.
- 3:43But it didn't work. But I loved that he talked about
- 3:46that. So when you go and you start
- 3:48thinking about, and he's, and he would willingly say what, you
- 3:51know, what went wrong? And the failures that I have had
- 3:55over time where I was like, oh, yes, I, I, I got a patent on
- 3:59that product and yes, it did not work.
- 4:01I could not get it sold. It was at a wonky time in the
- 4:04world. I could not figure out how to
- 4:06get it sold. It was just you.
- 4:08You couldn't get any traction anywhere.
- 4:11I have no problem going back and learning from the failures, so
- 4:15to speak, because they are so rich.
- 4:18I don't want somebody that's just going to talk about all of
- 4:21the stuff that is great in their world.
- 4:23I've heard it said that you can also check on somebody by their
- 4:27credit score. Now this really interesting to
- 4:29me because I think some how you handle yourself in all areas of
- 4:34your life matter and the credit score is a huge 1.
- 4:37And I'm proud to say that I worked my butt off to get my
- 4:40credit score to an 850. Like yes, I have an 850.
- 4:43It's attainable. I wanted to know how do I get
- 4:46there? And I worked and worked and
- 4:47worked and it took me like 5 years to get over that hump.
- 4:51I was at 800 couldn't get over the hump.
- 4:53But I but prior to that when I got divorced, my credit score
- 4:57was in the toilet. It was in the low 6 hundreds,
- 5:00and I had to work it all the way back up.
- 5:03But guess what? I did it and I'm proud of that.
- 5:07And I say, oh, you know, having a vision of a credit score,
- 5:10yeah, that's really good to know from somebody, hey, what's your
- 5:12credit score? You can ask somebody what their
- 5:15company is worth. You can do all these things, but
- 5:18ultimately it's how they behave and how they handle their
- 5:22language when they speak to you. What are they doing?
- 5:25How are they treating you? Are they asking you questions to
- 5:29then give you possibilities or are they just jamming things
- 5:33down your throat and saying what you have to do?
- 5:35Because in my world, in my circle, that does not work.
- 5:39And that often leads to you feeling like you have to take on
- 5:42the responsibility. If you pick something that they
- 5:44they told you to go do it and you do it because you believe in
- 5:47them, then you feel worse because you've made another bad
- 5:51choice if it doesn't work out. So be very strategic when you're
- 5:56picking and listening and when you've got a big issue that
- 6:00you're trying to sort out, the best thing you can do is put it
- 6:03on paper. Draw that line right down the
- 6:05middle. The pros, the cons, because your
- 6:07brain loves that stuff. Pluses and minuses.
- 6:10It works every single time. And always, always give yourself
- 6:15the time to process the character of the people you're
- 6:18listening to, as well as those other things that we talked
- 6:22about, like the credit score and all that stuff.
- 6:25Sure, but we don't really go around asking people their
- 6:27credit score, although maybe we should.
- 6:29Anyway, I hope this is helpful. My friends and I will see you
- 6:32all tomorrow. Have a blessed day, bye.
