- 0:00Where do we find true contentment in this life?
- 0:04How do we find joy and satisfaction in
- 0:09this life? Where do we find true happiness
- 0:13in this life? This is the quest
- 0:17that Solomon goes on in the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 0:21He opens the book with this thought: Everything is meaningless,
- 0:25says the teacher, utterly meaningless.
- 0:31I looked at everything, he goes on to say, and I had worked so hard
- 0:35to accomplish. It was all so meaningless.
- 0:39It was like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile
- 0:43anywhere. He continues on in verse 20, so I turned
- 0:48in despair from hard work. It was
- 0:51not the answer to my search for satisfaction. In this
- 0:55life. Solomon was the wisest man
- 0:59in the world, and he's on a quest to find
- 1:03the true secret of happiness and contentment
- 1:07and joy in this life. Join us as we go on a
- 1:11deep dive in the Book of Ecclesiastes.
- 1:14Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is September 2nd.
- 1:19Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible
- 1:24in one year. This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the
- 1:26Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:30Deuteronomy 19:1-10.
- 1:34When the Lord your God destroys the nations whose land he is giving
- 1:38you, you will take over their land and settle
- 1:41in their towns and homes. Then you must set apart 3 cities of
- 1:46refuge in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
- 1:49Survey the territory and divide the land the Lord your God is giving
- 1:52you into 3 districts, with one of these cities in each
- 1:56district. Then anyone who has killed someone can
- 1:59flee to one of the cities of refuge for safety.
- 2:03If someone kills another person unintentionally,
- 2:07without previous hostility, the slayer may flee to
- 2:11any of these cities to live in safety. For example,
- 2:15suppose someone goes into the forest with a neighbor to cut wood,
- 2:19and suppose one of them swings an axe to chop down a tree and the
- 2:22axe head flies off the handle, killing the
- 2:26other person. In such cases, the slayer may flee
- 2:30to one of the cities of refuge to live in safety.
- 2:33If the distance to the nearest city of refuge is too far,
- 2:38an enraged avenger might be able to chase down and kill the person
- 2:42who caused the death. Then the slayer would die unfairly,
- 2:46since he had never shown hostility toward the one who died.
- 2:50That is why I am commanding you to set aside 3 cities
- 2:54of refuge. And if the Lord your God enlarges your territory,
- 2:59as He swore to your ancestors, and gives you all the land
- 3:03He promised them, you must designate 3 additional cities of refuge.
- 3:08He will give you this land if you are careful to obey all the commands
- 3:12I have given you. If you always love the Lord your God
- 3:16and walk in His ways. That way you will prevent
- 3:20the death of innocent people in the land the Lord your God is giving you
- 3:24as your special possession. You will not be held responsible
- 3:29for the death of innocent people.
- 3:37Ecclesiastes 1:9-11.
- 3:441:3-22. These are the words of the Teacher, King David's son, who ruled in
- 3:47Jerusalem. Everything is meaningless, says the Teacher,
- 3:52utterly meaningless. What do people get for all
- 3:55their hard work? Generations come and go, but nothing really
- 4:00changes. The sun rises and sets and hurries around
- 4:04to rise again. The wind blows south and north,
- 4:07here and there, twisting back and forth, getting nowhere.
- 4:12The rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the
- 4:16water returns again to the rivers and flows again to the sea.
- 4:20Everything is so weary and tiresome. No matter how
- 4:23much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter
- 4:28how much we hear, we are not content.
- 4:31History merely repeats itself. It has
- 4:35all been done before.
- 4:39Nothing under the sun is truly new. What can you point to
- 4:43that is new? How do you know it didn't already exist
- 4:46long ago? We don't remember what happened in those former times,
- 4:51and in future generations, no one will remember what
- 4:56we are doing now.
- 4:59I, the teacher, was king of Israel, and I lived in Jerusalem.
- 5:04I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore
- 5:07by wisdom everything being done in the world. I soon
- 5:11discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence
- 5:15to the human race. Everything under the sun is meaningless,
- 5:19like chasing the wind. What is wrong cannot be
- 5:22righted. What is missing cannot be recovered. I said
- 5:26to myself, Look! I am wiser than any of the kings
- 5:30who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have
- 5:33greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.
- 5:37So I worked hard to distinguish wisdom from foolishness.
- 5:41But now I realize that even this was like chasing the wind.
- 5:45For the greater my wisdom, the greater my grief.
- 5:48To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.
- 5:52I said to myself, come now, let's give pleasure a try.
- 5:56Let's look for the good things in life. But I found that this, too,
- 6:00was meaningless. It is silly to be laughing all the
- 6:04time, I said. What good does it do to seek only
- 6:07pleasure? After much thought, I decided to cheer myself
- 6:11with wine. While still seeking wisdom,
- 6:15I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I hoped to
- 6:18experience the only happiness most people find during their
- 6:22brief life in this world.
- 6:26I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself
- 6:30and by planting beautiful vineyards. I made gardens and
- 6:34parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.
- 6:38I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many
- 6:41flourishing groves. I bought slaves, both men and
- 6:45women, and others were born into my household.
- 6:49I also owned great herds and flocks,
- 6:53more than any of the kings who lived in Jerusalem before me.
- 6:57I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure
- 7:01of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers,
- 7:05both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines.
- 7:09I had everything a man could desire.
- 7:12So I became greater than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem
- 7:17before me. And with it all, I remained clear-eyed
- 7:21so that I could evaluate all these things.
- 7:24Anything I wanted, I took. I did not
- 7:27restrain myself from any joy. I even found great
- 7:31pleasure in hard work, an additional reward
- 7:35for all my labors. But as I looked at everything I had worked
- 7:39so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless.
- 7:43It was like chasing the wind. There was nothing
- 7:46really worthwhile anywhere.
- 7:51So I decided to compare wisdom and folly, and anyone else
- 7:55would come to the same conclusions I did. Wisdom is
- 7:59of more value than foolishness.
- 8:02Just as light is better than darkness.
- 8:06For the wise person sees, while the fool is
- 8:10blind. Yet I saw that wise and foolish
- 8:14people share the same fate. Both of them die.
- 8:18Just as the fool will die, so will I. So of what value is
- 8:23all my wisdom? Then I said to myself, this is all
- 8:26so meaningless. For the wise person and the
- 8:30fool both die, and in the days to come,
- 8:33both will be forgotten. So now I hate life,
- 8:37because everything done here under the sun is so irrational.
- 8:42Everything is meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 8:47I am disgusted that I must leave the fruits of my hard work
- 8:51to others. And who can tell whether my successors will be
- 8:54wise? Or foolish, and yet they
- 8:58will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work.
- 9:02How meaningless! So I turned in despair from hard
- 9:06work. It was not the answer to my search for satisfaction in
- 9:11this life. For though I do my work with wisdom,
- 9:15knowledge, and skill, I must leave everything
- 9:19I gain to people who haven't worked to earn it.
- 9:23This is not only foolish but highly unfair.
- 9:26So what do people get for all their hard work? Their days of
- 9:30labor are filled with pain and grief. Even at
- 9:34night they cannot rest. It is all utterly meaningless.
- 9:40So I decided there is nothing better than
- 9:46to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work.
- 9:50Then I realized that this pleasure is from the
- 9:53hand of God, for who can eat or enjoy anything apart from
- 9:57Him? God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy
- 10:01to those who please Him. But if a sinner becomes
- 10:04wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those
- 10:08who please Him. Even this, however, is meaningless, like chasing
- 10:12the wind. There is a time for
- 10:16everything, A season for every activity under heaven: a
- 10:20time to be born and a time to die,
- 10:24a time to plant and a time to harvest, a time
- 10:28to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down
- 10:33and a time to rebuild, a time to cry and
- 10:37a time to laugh, a time to grieve and a time
- 10:41to dance, a time to scatter stones and a
- 10:45time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a
- 10:49time to turn away. A time to search and
- 10:53a time to lose. A time to keep and a time
- 10:57to throw away. A time to tear and
- 11:01a time to mend. A time to be quiet and
- 11:05a time to speak up. A time to love and
- 11:09a time to hate. A time for war and a time
- 11:13for peace. What do people really get for all
- 11:17their hard work? I have thought about this in connection with the various kinds
- 11:22of work God has given people to do. God has made
- 11:25everything beautiful for its own time.
- 11:28He has planted eternity in the human
- 11:32heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope
- 11:36of God's work from beginning to end.
- 11:39So I concluded that there is nothing better for people
- 11:43than to be happy and to enjoy themselves as long
- 11:46as they can. And people should eat and drink
- 11:50and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.
- 11:55And I know that whatever God does is final.
- 11:59Nothing can be added to it or taken from it.
- 12:03God's purpose in this is that people should fear Him.
- 12:07Whatever exists today and whatever will exist in the future has
- 12:11already existed in the past,
- 12:15for God calls each event back in its turn.
- 12:21I also noticed that throughout the world there is evil in
- 12:25the courtroom. Yes, even the courts of law
- 12:28are corrupt. I said to myself, in due season,
- 12:32God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.
- 12:37Then I realized that God allows people to continue in
- 12:41their sinful ways so He can test them.
- 12:44That way, they can see for themselves that they are no better
- 12:48than animals, for humans and animals both breathe
- 12:52the same air. And both
- 12:55die. So people have no real advantage over the animals.
- 12:59How meaningless! Both go to the same
- 13:03place, the dust from which they came and to which they must
- 13:07return. For who can prove that the human spirit goes upward
- 13:11and the spirit of animals goes downward into the earth? So I saw that
- 13:15there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work.
- 13:21That is why they are here. No one will bring them
- 13:25back from the dead to enjoy life in the future.
- 13:332 Corinthians 6:1-13.
- 13:37As God's partners, we— Paul and his coworkers— beg you,
- 13:42Corinthians, not to reject this marvelous message of God's
- 13:46great kindness. For God says, at just the
- 13:50right time I heard you, On the day of salvation I helped you.
- 13:54Indeed, God is ready to help you right now. Today is
- 13:59the day of salvation. We try to live in such a way
- 14:03that no one will be hindered from finding the Lord by the way we act,
- 14:07and so no one can find fault with our ministry.
- 14:11In everything we do, we try to show that we are true ministers of
- 14:15God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships
- 14:19and calamities of every kind. We have been beaten,
- 14:22been put in jail, faced angry mobs,
- 14:26worked to exhaustion, endured sleepless nights,
- 14:30and gone without food. We have proved ourselves by
- 14:33our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness,
- 14:37our sincere love, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 14:41We have faithfully preached the truth. God's power
- 14:45has been working in us. We have righteousness as our weapon,
- 14:49both to attack and to defend ourselves. We serve
- 14:53God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they
- 14:57slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they
- 15:01call us imposters. We are well known, but we are treated
- 15:05as unknown. We live close to death, but here we
- 15:09are still alive. We have been beaten within an inch
- 15:12of our lives. Our hearts ache, but we always have
- 15:16joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches
- 15:21to others. We own nothing, and yet we have
- 15:26everything. Oh dear Corinthian
- 15:29friends, we have spoken honestly with you.
- 15:33Our hearts are open to you. If there is
- 15:37a problem between us, it is not because of a lack of love
- 15:41on our part. But because you have withheld your love from us.
- 15:45I am talking now as I would to my own children.
- 15:49Open your hearts to us.
- 15:56Psalm 46:1-11.
- 16:00God is our refuge and strength,
- 16:03always ready to help in times of trouble. So we
- 16:07will not fear, Even if earthquakes come
- 16:11and the mountains crumble into the sea, let the oceans
- 16:14roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters
- 16:18surge. A river brings joy to the city of
- 16:22our God, the sacred home of the Most High.
- 16:26God himself lives in that city. It cannot be destroyed.
- 16:30God will protect it at the break of day. The nations
- 16:34are in an roar, and kingdoms crumble.
- 16:38God thunders, and the earth melts. The Lord Almighty
- 16:42is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.
- 16:47Come, see the glorious works of the Lord.
- 16:51See how He brings destruction upon the world and causes
- 16:55wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks
- 16:59the bow and snaps the spear in two. He burns the shields
- 17:02with fire. Be silent and know that I am
- 17:06God. I will be honored by every nation.
- 17:10I will be honored throughout the world. The Lord Almighty is
- 17:13here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress.
- 17:19Proverbs 22:15.
- 17:23A youngster's heart is filled with foolishness,
- 17:26but discipline will drive it away.
- 17:31I want to speak to you today from our reading from Ecclesiastes 1 through
- 17:363. And here Solomon, who was considered
- 17:40the wisest person on earth— remember,
- 17:44Solomon was given wisdom from the Lord
- 17:48as a gift from Him, because when God said,
- 17:51what is it you ask? What is it you seek? He said, help me to
- 17:54have wisdom to rule this people.
- 17:58He was the king of Israel, and so the Father gave
- 18:02him tremendous, tremendous wisdom. So here in Ecclesiastes,
- 18:07with all of the wisdom that he has, he is asking some deep
- 18:11questions in life, and these questions
- 18:15are questions for us to ponder as well.
- 18:20He opens the book with this thought. Everything is meaningless,
- 18:24says the teacher, utterly meaningless.
- 18:29And then he asks, what do people get for all their hard
- 18:32work? And then he
- 18:36goes on to say, no matter how much we see, we're never satisfied. No matter
- 18:40how much we hear, we're not content. And then he
- 18:43says an important truth in verse 9. History merely repeats
- 18:48itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun
- 18:52is truly new. He picks
- 18:56up with this very same theme. What is the meaning and the purpose
- 19:00of life? That is his burning question.
- 19:03Why am I here? And how can I have
- 19:07contentment or joy or happiness? Where,
- 19:11where do I find that? And he goes on to say,
- 19:15I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish.
- 19:18And it was all so meaningless. It was
- 19:22like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile
- 19:27anywhere. I turned, he goes on to say
- 19:31in verse 20, in despair from hard work. It was not
- 19:35the answer to my search for satisfaction in this life.
- 19:40And so then in chapter 2 or chapter
- 19:453, He says in verse 9, what do
- 19:48people really get for all their hard work?
- 19:51I have thought about this in connection with the various kinds of work God has
- 19:55given people to do. God has
- 19:58made everything beautiful in its own
- 20:02time. And so he's on
- 20:06a quest. He's on a mission. He wants to find satisfaction.
- 20:12In this life, contentment in this life, joy and
- 20:17peace in this life. And he's seeing that people
- 20:22are a lot like a hamster on a wheel and they're just running and running
- 20:25and running. People are just like the Energizer Bunny rabbit.
- 20:30They just keep going and going and going.
- 20:34He comes to one conclusion in verse 22. So I
- 20:39saw there is nothing better for people than to be
- 20:43happy in their work. That is why they are here. No one
- 20:47will bring them back from death to enjoy life in the
- 20:51future. Where do we find true contentment?
- 20:56Where do we find true happiness and joy in this life?
- 21:03Solomon is on a quest to find the answers to these questions.
- 21:07We'll pick this up tomorrow.
